The far-right turn in Brazilian politics led to the re-emergence of a ghost that has been hindering our political agency since the dawn of the republic but that had been hidden for a few decades: the Army and its violent political agency. This essay will frame the archive as an important instance within the artistic practice I have developed as a response to the apparition of this military monster during the Bolsonaro years. In a body of work called "Concrete Witnesses Inquiry," I have combined images and texts (collected mainly from the press) with an urban landscape photographic work that presents overpasses built in my hometown, Porto Alegre, during the 1964 military dictatorship. Following authors such as Georges Didi-Huberman and Allan Sekula, I suggest that the archive can be seen as a central axis in this process, allowing me to connect otherwise unimportant elements from the urban landscape with violent historical processes, often considered distant and abstract. This paper presents a successful application of the mise‐à‐la‐masse (MALM) or applied potential method in association with induced polarization (IP). MALM is known, since 1920, to be able to delimit electrically conductive massive mineralization. The method is used at the point where a drill hole intercepts a massive, mineralized body, to estimate its extent and shape. It is thus used as a complementary mineral exploration tool. IP is normally used in conjunction with resistivity. However, the acquisition of IP data together with the MALM method is rarely found in the literature. This survey shows that it is possible to successfully detect and delimit areas of disseminated sulphides using MALM with IP. In this paper, the MALM method is presented and discussed in detail. A short description of the IP method is also provided. Data are from the Camaquã Project (Caçapava do Sul, RS, Brazil) and the Santa Maria (lead, zinc and associated silver) deposit, 5 km south of Caçapava do Sul. In a well that intercepted a massive mineralization (borehole 8011) with electrical continuity, ∆V measurements delineated the extent, shape and orientation (NS) of a conductive sulphide body. Mineralization intercepted by other two wells (8011 and 8103) did not present enough electrical continuity to exhibit potential contours that could be associated to massive sulphides; it was, however, successfully detected by IP. This paper aims to conduct a critical review of the academic works on railway history in Brazil. We read and analysed 492 theses and dissertations by graduate students in Brazil (published from 1974 to 2020). A qualitative and quantitative approach was used over time to characterise the increasing production of academic theses and dissertations on railway history in Brazil and which authors, bibliographies, archives, and historical sources have become essential for railway researchers. The results of this review indicate that several academic areas are interested in the theme and some authors have become references to the most varied railway studies. In recent decades, authors who research more specific subjects have gained greater visibility in graduation essays. The bibliography of their studies should be interpreted according to how sources change with time. Authors of the reviewed papers had to use alternatives to research railways due to archival issues and instability of access to documents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The question of how to generate development while preserving the environment is central to the history of the Brazilian Amazon. Many decades of top-down state interventions conceived and executed under a developmentalist framework have resulted in a socioenvironmental crisis. In response, the Sustainable Oil Palm Production Program (SPOPP) was launched in 2010. It promised to break with developmentalist visions and articulate environmental and sustainability concerns. This paper uses assemblage thinking to examine how these contrasting, often impossible-to-balance, views manifest within SPOPP implementation. We describe how non-human actors (trees, diseases, previous policies and agroecological zoning technologies) interact with human actors. However, powerful actors, in the state and beyond, continue to garner support for their developmentalist interests and thwart or depoliticize environmental and social concerns, thus limiting change. Reinforcing the term proposed by Queixalós & Renault-Lescure (2000, pp. 9-11) in the title, this paper aims to establish relations between the colonial history of Brazil and the policies for language teaching in our country since the beginning of the colonization, in order to analyze traces of linguistic coloniality that are still present nowadays. Through an analysis of the history of language teaching in Brazil (BESSA FREIRE, 2018; GRILLI, 2018; LUCCHESI, 2017; SAVIANI, 2007; SILVA & FAVORITO, 2018), with a theoretical basis in decolonial thinking (FANON, 2008; SOUSA). SANTOS, 2019; VERONELLI, 2015), this paper delimits three effects of the coloniality of language. It is argued that these three effects were launched by the abyssal exclusion of non-white peoples during the colonial period, but they persist firmly in contemporary Brazil. Finally, language education is defended as an emancipating alternative to the civilizing monolingualism, as a way to welcome the multiplicity of knowledges and speeches of the Brazilian people. The current paper analyses the Brazilian foreign policy towards the war in Ukraine, from the tensions preceding the invasion until the first half of the war's second year. Since the conflict began, Brazil was governed by two sharply contrasting administrations, neither of which clearly aligned with one side of the conflict. It is argued, however, that while Bolsonaro assumed an inert attitude, Lula undertook a proactive non-alignment. As proposed by this forum, this article presents three counterfactuals, exploring how the Brazilian position could have been different, and outlines future perspectives based on three uncertainties: (1) will Brazil be recognized as a viable mediator? In this text I present documents written by Mariza Corrêa in the 1990s and 2000s, considering the issues they address and the innovations they offered to the fields of knowledge in which they were produced. The reconstruction of the economic history of Brazil since independence from Portugal (1822) may lead to a new understanding of its economic growth. The deep-rooted idea that Brazil could have done better means there is a need to delve into each phase of its development. In this paper, we provide a very long-run perspective (1822-2019) of Brazil's economic growth and process of real convergence. On the one hand, this review indicates that structural changes observed in the middle of the 20th century were crucial in promoting the country's growth and real convergence with technologically advanced countries. On the other hand, poor institutional conditions and deficient human capital formation have emerged since colonial times as critical factors underlying Brazil's inability to establish robust and sustainable economic growth. Curt Nimuendajú Unckel is well known as a Brazilian ethnologist and linguist who acquired his scientific skills in a self-taught manner over the course of his life. In doing so, Nimuendajú found his way into academia with work that offers important impulses for comparative religion and the sociology of religion. However, Nimuendajú has hardly been received in religious studies to date. Therefore, this paper will focus on and present Nimuendajú's achievements in religious studies. For this purpose, the early period of Nimuendajú's upbringing will be examined (1914-1926), in which the interest in religious studies becomes particularly visible. In parallel, an exchange of letters that Nimuendajú had with the German ethnologist Theodor Koch-Grünberg (1872-1924) is consulted and provides background knowledge on Nimuendajú's genuine research interest. This study is based on an investigation into the Brazilian anti-doping policy, with a specific focus on the establishment and operational mechanisms of the Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD), under the auspices of the Ministry of Sport (ME). The objective was to describe how Brazilian national policy (general political decisions, interests of parties or particular politicians/agents) affects the fight against doping and, vice versa, how the harmonization process controlled by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) affects national sports policy. A multi-sited ethnographic study was undertaken, involving field diary practices, interviews and document analysis. Adopting the perspective of pragmatic sociology, this study delves into the descriptions of three key periods in the recent history of anti-doping in Brazil: the creation of ABCD and the dissolution of ANAD (National Anti-Doping Agency), the realization of the first 100 anti-doping tests by the ABCD (critical period for its members who managed to keep away ex-officers from ANAD) and the impeachment of the Brazilian president in 2016 (ex-officers from ANAD took over the direction of the ABCD). Our analysis allowed us to conclude that 'diverting others from decision-making spheres' comprised a political strategy to occupy spaces of power or to stabilize itself in them, which, in this case, allowed the control of anti-doping actions in the country. This text is the result of research that has as its object of study the potential of local and regional History in the teaching and learning of History and an analysis of the commemorative centennial issue of Ituiutaba of the Jornal do Pontal (VI Year, Issue 951 process). From these studies, the paper presents a proposal of a sequence of lessons working in the context of questioning the official story of the city of Ituiutaba, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was concluded that work in the classroom with regional and local History to articulate content and methodology, considering the contributions of the theory of History and drawing on multiple views, it is possible to provide students with learning experiences that develop critical insight, creative and transformative. This article explores the dendrochronological potential of Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart) Barroso (Imbuia) for reconstructing past climate conditions in the General Carneiro region, Southern Brazil, utilizing well-established dendroclimatic techniques. A total of 41 samples of Imbuia were subjected to dendroclimatic analysis to reconstruct precipitation and temperature patterns over the period from 1446 to 2011. Notably, we achieved the longest reconstructions of spring precipitation and temperature for the Brazilian southern region, spanning an impressive 566-year timeframe, by employing a mean chronology approach. To achieve our objectives, we conducted a Pearson's correlation analysis between the mean chronology and the climatic time series, with a monthly temporal resolution employed for model calibration. Impressively, our findings reveal significant correlations with coefficients as high as |rx,P| = 0.32 for precipitation and |rx,T| = 0.45 for temperature during the spring season. Importantly, our climate reconstructions may elucidate a direct influence of the El Niño—South Oscillation phenomenon on precipitation and temperature patterns, which, in turn, are intricately linked to the natural growth patterns of the Imbuia trees. These results shed valuable light on the historical climate variability in the Southern Brazil region and provide insights into the climatic drivers affecting the growth dynamics of Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart) Barroso. This article expands the ideas discussed during the IV International Conference about teaching Brazilian Portuguese in the Italian University (December, 2021) and the International Conference that celebrated the Day of the Portuguese Language (May, 2022). Three main issues will be addressed: the origin of the large gap between speech and writing in Brazilian Portuguese and the consequences of the adoption of an exonormative model of written language, ignoring the written language already in development in Brazil along the 19th Century; some important features of spoken Brazilian grammar resulting from the contact with other languages during colonization, particularly the African slaves and their descendants, and other features related to successive processes of changes; and some aspects that characterize contemporary Brazilian writing as a result of the recovery of lost features by the action of a conservative perspective and the implementation of Brazilian speech features. The discrepancy between use and prescription gives rise to structures that belong neither to European nor to Brazilian grammars. Besides questions related to the social history of Brazilian Portuguese, this article relates the emergence of some structures to the reduction of the category Agreement, including not only number and person verbal endings but the non-deictic clitics: the indefinite se, and the anaphoric accusative and dative clitics, not available in acquisition data, contrary to deictic me, te, clitics, treated as overt pronouns (Noun Phrases), following Galves (2019) and extending Nunes's 2019 analysis for the accusative 3rd person clitic as agreement of object. The simplified category Agr gives rise to overt subjects, null complements, constructions that suggest topic prominence, such as left-dislocated subjects, genitive and locative raising in impersonal sentences, among others. This article analyzes the aid provided by U.S. and multilateral institutions to Brazilian states during the government of João Goulart in Brazil (1961–1964). Although scholars have long emphasized that John F. Kennedy's Alliance for Progress employed state-by-state shaped by Cold War goals that helped to destabilize Brazil's political system and to facilitate the advent of a military regime that lasted 21 years, little has been known until now about the amount, characteristics, and impact of these loans. This article presents the first comprehensive list of U.S. dollar loans and cruzeiro grants to Brazilian states during this crucial period of Brazil's history and demonstrates that U.S. aid was strongly guided by political objectives, particularly boosting anti-Communist and pro-U.S. governors for the forthcoming Brazilian presidential elections. Starting in 2014, Brazilian politics was shaken up by the lava jato (LJ) operation, a law‐centered anticorruption initiative. LJ unveiled a large corruption scheme in Brazil's national oil company Petrobras, which involved Petrobras directors, political party officials, and large construction companies. LJ was both disruptive and contentious. To some, it started a new chapter in Brazilian history, marked by greater respect for the "rule of law" and a collective "state of mind" concerned with "ending impunity" and building integrity in politics and businesses. To others, it contributed to undermining democracy and the rule of law, paving the way for an autocratic leader—the current Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. This article sheds further light on those discussions by looking at LJ as a site of "legal consciousness" production. Empirically, the article focuses on conversations generated by lead LJ prosecutors on a major social media platform (Facebook) from 2017 to 2019. Considering this body of data, the article addresses the question: "When prosecutors and 'the people' talked about LJ, what did they talk about?" My findings support the more skeptical views of the operation. The exchanges between LJ prosecutors and their Facebook followers supported the co‐production of a cultural schema averse to the "rule of law." Mining is an activity that has had a considerable impact on the history of Brazil, whether from an economic, political, social, geographic, or demographic, artistic, and religious point of view. Its history is stamped by several phases starting in 1693 with gold discoveries in Minas Gerais, and diamond findings in 1729. This lasted almost 150 years for gold, and 140 years for diamond. With exhaustion of alluvial deposits in rivers and streams, the Portuguese expertise was over, being replaced by English and French companies who started gold extraction in veins and lodes. English presence started soon after 1824, when a decree gave them permission to work in Brazil. These operations have been constant until nowadays. During the ninteenth century, other minerals were produced, such as coal, lignite, peat, oil, and iron. In 1934, the first Mining Code was enacted during Vargas Era. The big jump in iron ore production happened only in 1942, when Companhia Vale do Rio Doce-CVRD was established as an outcome of Washington Agreements, signed by the USA, England, and Brazil. In current times, Brazil has reached the status of an intermediate economy close to G7, being an outstanding player in international minerals trade, together with other developing nations (South Africa, Chile, Peru, India, and Indonesia). The use of natural lignocellulosic fibers has become popular all over the world, as they are abundant, low-cost materials that favor a series of technological properties when used in cementitious composites. Due to its climate and geographic characteristics, Brazil has an abundant variety of natural fibers that have great potential for use in civil construction. The objective of this work is to present the main concepts about lignocellulosic fibers in cementitious composites, highlighting the innovation and advances in this topic in relation to countries such as Brazil, which has a worldwide prominence in the production of natural fibers. For this, some common characteristics of lignocellulosic fibers will be observed, such as their source, their proportion of natural polymers (biological structure of the fiber), their density and other mechanical characteristics. This information is compared with the mechanical characteristics of synthetic fibers to analyze the performance of composites reinforced with both types of fibers. Despite being inferior in tensile and flexural strength, composites made from vegetable fibers have an advantage in relation to their low density. The interface between the fiber and the composite matrix is what will define the final characteristics of the composite material. Due to this, different fibers (reinforcement materials) were analyzed in the literature in order to observe their characteristics in cementitious composites. Finally, the different surface treatments through which the fibers undergo will determine the fiber–matrix interface and the final characteristics of the cementitious composite. This article analyses the frequently neglected synergies, past and present, between community-oriented policing (COP) and community-centred military interventions in Latin America. From the vantage point of Brazilian pacification efforts, from the Global Cold War to the Global War on Terror, it is argued that COP is a transnational security governance rationale that emerged during the Global Cold War out of the discovery of the 'community' as a key target for military interventions seeking to counter the presence of non-state armed actors challenging state authority. This underlying logic survived the end of the Cold War, including in Latin America. In the post-9/11 context COP efforts returned to their militarized Cold War origins, when local security bureaucracies (re)discovered the usefulness of engaging with local communities in order to confront challenges to state power from non-stated armed actors, such as gangs and drug traffickers. This argument will be elaborated through an analysis of on one of the most recent Latin American COP 'success stories': the pacification programme operating in Rio de Janeiro since 2008. This research scrutinizes the content, spread, and implications of disinformation in Brazil's 2018 pre-election period. It focuses specifically on the most widely shared fake news about Lula da Silva and links these with the preexisting polarization and political radicalization, ascertaining the role of context. The research relied on a case study and mixed-methods approach that combined an online data collection of content, spread, propagators, and interactions' analyses, with in-depth analysis of the meaning of such fake news. The results show that the most successful fake news about Lula capitalized on prior hostility toward him, several originated or were spread by conservative right-wing politicians and mainstream journalists, and that the pro-Lula fake news circulated in smaller networks and had overall less global reach.
