Microbially contaminated food can cause serious health hazards and economic losses, therefore sensitive, rapid, and highly specific visual detection is called for. Traditional detection of microorganisms is complex and time-consuming, which cannot meet current testing demands. The emergence of paper-based biosensors provided an effective method for efficient and visual detection of microorganisms, due to its high speed, all-in-one device, low cost, and convenience. This review focused on 5 biomarkers, namely nucleic acids, proteins, lipopolysaccharides, metabolites, and the whole microorganism of microorganisms. Besides, the recognition methods were summed up in 5 forms, including immunological recognition, aptamer recognition, nucleic acid amplification-mediated recognition, DNAzyme recognition and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats mediated recognition. In addition, we summarized the applications of paper-based biosensors in the detection of microorganisms thoroughly. Through the exploration of different biomarkers, identification methods, and applications, we hope to provide a reference for the development of paper-based biosensors and their application in safeguarding the food chain.

The main mechanism that causes resistance to carbapenem, one of the most potent antibiotic available, in Enterobacterales bacterial isolates, is due to Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) production by the bacterium. KPC is spread worldwide, requiring laboratories to be capable of identifying this enzyme, however some methods can be expensive for small laboratories, especially in developing countries. Therefore, the development of methods with low cost of reagents for the detection of KPC enzyme is necessary. The objective of this study was to evaluate the detection of KPC enzyme by MALDI-TOF MS from inactivated bacteria impregnated in filter paper. A total of 129 Enterobacterales isolates were impregnated in filter paper, and after 7 days at room temperature, they were subjected to a protein extraction protocol and spectra acquisition, in triplicates, by MALDI-TOF MS. The spectra were evaluated and KPC was identified according to the presence of a peak of 28,712.62 ± 27.80 m / z. Considering the presence of the KPC peak in at least one spectrum of the triplicates, this method presented 60.8% sensitivity and 96.4% specificity. However, considering the presence of KPC peak in at least two spectra of the triplicate, a specificity of 100% was achieved. The detection of KPC enzyme from inactivated bacteria impregnated in filter paper can be used as a method to confirm the presence of KPC, which could be very significant for small laboratories with limited resources. • Detection of KPC by MALDI-TOF MS can be performed from bacteria in filter-paper. • Detection of KPC from filter-paper by MALDI-TOF MS can be a confirmatory method. • The impregnation of inactivated bacteria in filter-paper is simple and inexpensive. Abstract Recently, the interest in extracellular vesicles released by bacteria has rapidly increased. Bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) have been involved in bacteria‐bacteria and bacteria‐host interactions, which strengthen health or bring about various pathologies. However, BEV separation, characterization, and functional studies require the establishment of guidelines and further optimization in order to stimulate the development of science in BEV research and a following successful transformation into clinical applications. This position paper is authored by the Microbial Vesicles Task Force of the Chinese Society for Extracellular Vesicles (CSEV) composed of experienced medical laboratory specialists, microbiologists, virologists, biologists and material biologists who are actively engaged in BEV research. Herein, we present a concise description of BEV research and discover challenges and critical gaps in current BEV‐based analyses for clinical applications. Finally, we also offer suggestions and considerations to improve experimental reproducibility and interoperability in BEV research to promote progress in the field.

In particular, clinical data on cancer biomarkers show great promise in forming reliable predictions for early cancer diagnostics, although the current analytical systems are difficult to implement in regions of limited recourses. Paper-based biosensors, in particular, have recently received great interest because they meet the criteria for point-of-care (PoC) devices; the main drawbacks with these devices are the low sensitivity and efficiency in performing quantitative measurements. In this work, we design a low-cost paper-based nanosensor through plasmonic calligraphy by directly drawing individual plasmonic lines on filter paper using a ballpoint pen filled with gold nanorods (AuNR) as the colloidal ink. The plasmonic arrays were further successively coated with negatively and positively charged polyelectrolyte layers employed as dielectric spacers to promote the enhancement of the emission of carboxyl-functionalized quantum dots (QD)—previously conjugated with specific antibodies—for indirect detection of the carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 5 (CEACAM5). The efficiency, sensitivity, as well as the specificity of our portable nanosensor were validated by recording the luminescence of the QD@Ab complex when different concentrations of CEACAM5 were added dropwise onto the calligraphed plasmonic arrays.

Over the past years, eosinophils have become a focus of scientific interest, especially in the context of their recently uncovered functions (e.g. antiviral, anti‐inflammatory, regulatory). These versatile cells display both beneficial and detrimental activities under various physiological and pathological conditions. Eosinophils are involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases which can be classified into primary (clonal) and secondary (reactive) disorders and idiopathic (hyper)eosinophilic syndromes. Depending on the biological specimen, the eosinophil count in different body compartments may serve as a biomarker reflecting the underlying pathophysiology and/or activity of distinct diseases and as a therapy‐driving (predictive) and monitoring tool. Personalized selection of an appropriate therapeutic strategy directly or indirectly targeting the increased number and/or activity of eosinophils should be based on the understanding of eosinophil homeostasis including their interactions with other immune and non‐immune cells within different body compartments. Hence, restoring as well as maintaining homeostasis within an individual's eosinophil pool is a goal of both specific and non‐specific eosinophil‐targeting therapies. Despite the overall favourable safety profile of the currently available anti‐eosinophil biologics, the effect of eosinophil depletion should be monitored from the perspective of possible unwanted consequences. Response evaluation criteria in solid tumours (RECIST) v1.1 are currently the reference standard for evaluating efficacy of therapies in patients with solid tumours who are included in clinical trials, and they are widely used and accepted by regulatory agencies. This expert statement discusses the principles underlying RECIST, as well as their reproducibility and limitations. While the RECIST framework may not be perfect, the scientific bases for the anticancer drugs that have been approved using a RECIST-based surrogate endpoint remain valid. Importantly, changes in measurement have to meet thresholds defined by RECIST for response classification within thus partly circumventing the problems of measurement variability. The RECIST framework also applies to clinical patients in individual settings even though the relationship between tumour size changes and outcome from cohort studies is not necessarily translatable to individual cases. As reproducibility of RECIST measurements is impacted by reader experience, choice of target lesions and detection/interpretation of new lesions, it can result in patients changing response categories when measurements are near threshold values or if new lesions are missed or incorrectly interpreted. There are several situations where RECIST will fail to evaluate treatment-induced changes correctly; knowledge and understanding of these is crucial for correct interpretation. Also, some patterns of response/progression cannot be correctly documented by RECIST, particularly in relation to organ-site (e.g. bone without associated soft-tissue lesion) and treatment type (e.g. focal therapies). These require specialist reader experience and communication with oncologists to determine the actual impact of the therapy and best evaluation strategy. In such situations, alternative imaging markers for tumour response may be used but the sources of variability of individual imaging techniques need to be known and accounted for. Communication between imaging experts and oncologists regarding the level of confidence in a biomarker is essential for the correct interpretation of a biomarker and its application to clinical decision-making. Though measurement automation is desirable and potentially reduces the variability of results, associated technical difficulties must be overcome, and human adjudications may be required.

Allergic diseases and asthma are heterogenous chronic inflammatory conditions with several distinct complex endotypes. Both environmental and genetic factors can influence the development and progression of allergy. Complex pathogenetic pathways observed in allergic disorders present a challenge in patient management and successful targeted treatment strategies. The increasing availability of high‐throughput omics technologies, such as genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics allows studying biochemical systems and pathophysiological processes underlying allergic responses. Additionally, omics techniques present clinical applicability by functional identification and validation of biomarkers. Therefore, finding molecules or patterns characteristic for distinct immune‐inflammatory endotypes, can subsequently influence its development, progression, and treatment. There is a great potential to further increase the effectiveness of single omics approaches by integrating them with other omics, and nonomics data. Systems biology aims to simultaneously and longitudinally understand multiple layers of a complex and multifactorial disease, such as allergy, or asthma by integrating several, separated data sets and generating a complete molecular profile of the condition. With the use of sophisticated biostatistics and machine learning techniques, these approaches provide in‐depth insight into individual biological systems and will allow efficient and customized healthcare approaches, called precision medicine. In this EAACI Position Paper, the Task Force "Omics technologies in allergic research" broadly reviewed current advances and applicability of omics techniques in allergic diseases and asthma research, with a focus on methodology and data analysis, aiming to provide researchers (basic and clinical) with a desk reference in the field. The potential of omics strategies in understanding disease pathophysiology and key tools to reach unmet needs in allergy precision medicine, such as successful patients' stratification, accurate disease prognosis, and prediction of treatment efficacy and successful prevention measures are highlighted. The current investigation focuses on the creation of a paper microchip engineered to identify DNA and saliva. Traditional bioassays typically rely on controlled lab settings and delicate reagents to generate outcomes. In a bid to streamline these cumbersome and time-intensive procedures, a paper-based bioassay employing nanocomposite colorimetric analysis has been innovated. To enhance the efficiency, PMMA-Au nanocomposite clusters were strategically positioned on the substrate for DNA sensing assays, capitalizing on DNA-AuNP cross-linking. This arrangement facilitated the establishment of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic channels, essential for substrate analysis. Paper-based analytical devices (PADs), thanks to the versatility, cheapness, availability, biodegradability, and porosity of paper, have emerged as flexible sensing platforms for determining various analytes. However, lack of selectivity can be a problem in complex analysis conditions and samples. To improve the selectivity and specificity of PADs, they can be integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The high selectivity of the sensor is the essential feature for biomarker analysis because the reliable and accurate determination of biomarkers provides valuable information about various diseases, especially cancer. Therefore, MIP-PAD systems offer a good option for biomarker analysis. This way, it is possible to achieve point-of-care tests, early diagnosis, and affordability. This review points out the significant processes of MIP-PAD fabrication and characterization (paper selection and fabrication, synthesis of MIP). The most recent applications of MIP-PADs for biological samples are explained and discussed in detail. Lastly, the commercialization of MIP-PADs is evaluated. The development of paper-based sensors with the distance readout is particularly attractive for the point-of-care testing (POCT) of biomarkers. Herein, we report a paper-based sensor that can convert the viscosity change caused by the hydrogel degradation into the variance of water flow distance on the paper. The detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is demonstrated as examples. Copper alginate (Cu-Alg) hydrogel can be formed when mixing the aqueous solutions of Cu2+ and alginate. The introduction of pyrophosphate ion (PPi) induces the gel-sol transition due to the high affinity between Cu2+ and PPi. However, in the presence of ALP, the gel-sol transition is prevented due to the hydrolysis of PPi by ALP. In these processes, the viscosity changes of the hydrogels are translated into the differences of the flow distances on the pH test papers. In addition, the tilt of the papers can increase the accuracy of detection. The detection of AFP is also fulfilled via the construction of the paper-based immunosensor using the ALP-linked AFP detection antibody. The developed paper-based sensors show excellent performance for the quantitative detection of biomarkers in real samples with remarkable selectivity. The detection of specific biomarkers is used in various phases of the diagnosis of plant and human diseases, from prognosis to monitoring. Herein, we report a Prussian blue nanocube-modified immunodevice interfaced with a paper disc for the detection of plant biomarkers via streptavidin-biotin recognition. The detection ability of the immunodevice was assessed using Potato virus X as a model biomarker and analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The immunodevice displayed excellent performance for Potato virus X detection with a detection limit of 0.92 nM (3S/N). The selectivity of the fabricated Potato virus X immunodevice was investigated using closely associated antigens, such as potato aucuba mosaic virus, Potato virus Y, and Potato virus A. The Potato virus X immunodevice exhibited ∼ 90 % recovery in spiked complex plant samples with a relative error of ∼ 9 %. Furthermore, the immunodevice was used to screen for Potato virus X in 10 samples from potato tubers and leaves. The paper-disc-interfaced immunodevice was also evaluated by detecting other biomarkers, such as potato aucuba mosaic virus in plant diseases and C-reactive protein in human ones. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious renal emergency that is often underdiagnosed and associated with high mortality rates. Early diagnosis of AKI is crucial to improve patient prognosis and reduce healthcare costs. In this study, a paper-based colloidal gold multiplex vertical flow assay was developed for rapid detection of three AKI biomarkers, namely, NGAL, CysC, and RBP4, in a single test kit. In this system, specific capture antibodies were pre-immobilized on the sensing membrane at four spatially isolated immunoreactive sites. Gold nanoparticles were conjugated with detection antibodies as the colorimetrical labels. The resultant images could be read out qualitatively by the naked eyes or quantitatively by a smartphone-based readout device. Three AKI biomarkers could be simultaneously detected in 10–15 min. The detection sensitivity and specificity for clinical serum samples collected from 25 patients with AKI and 25 healthy individuals were determined as 92% and 88%. This vertical flow assay platform is easy to use, rapid, and low cost. It is a promising diagnostic tool for multiplex detection of disease biomarkers at point of care. The pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is multifactorial and not entirely clear. The objective of the review was to examine the current state of knowledge concerning the role of exosomes in CRS. For this systematic review, we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, CENTRAL, and Web of Science databases for studies published until 7 August 2022. Only original research articles describing studies published in English were included. Reviews, book chapters, case studies, conference papers, and opinions were excluded. The quality of the evidence was assessed with the modified Office and Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) Risk of Bias Rating Tool for Human and Animal Studies. Of 250 records identified, 17 were eligible, all of which had a low to moderate risk of overall bias. Presented findings indicate that exosomal biomarkers, including proteins and microRNA, act as promising biomarkers in the diagnostics and prognosis of CRS patients and, in addition, may contribute to finding novel therapeutic targets. Exosomes reflecting tissue proteomes are excellent, highly available material for studying proteomic alterations noninvasively. The first steps have already been taken, but more advanced research on nasal exosomes is needed, which might open a wider door for individualized medicine in CRS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer has become one of the crucial factors that endanger human beings. In order to effectively improve the treatment effect of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients, early screening of tumor markers is particularly critical. Compared with conventional detection methods, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) integrated with electrochemical detection methods have apparent advantages, such as being small, portable, and biodegradable, as well as fast analysis, high sensitivity, and low cost. As a result, electrochemical μPADs have become alternatives to conventional analytical instruments, and the related research has significantly increased. In this review, the fabrication process of μPADs was discussed first, mainly emphasizing the fabrication methods of paper-based hydrophobic barriers, including chemical and physical methods. Then, recent reports on μPADs using electrochemical detection methods for the detection of common tumor markers were discussed. A fast and precise analysis of complex biological samples is one of the most important challenges in clinical- and life-sciences. In this field, the paper spray ionization (PSI) becomes a more and more successful ambient ionization technique for mass spectrometry. The PSI is based on the electrospray mechanism and is limited to polar target analytes. In this work, a transition from the paper spray ionization to a corona discharge under standard PSI conditions is observed and evaluated by using a complex liver sample. This evaluation leads to an advancement of the PSI by adding a flexible microtube plasma (FμTP) that is more efficient in respect to non- and low polar molecules. The combination of the PSI and the FμTP in a sequential way allows the determination of polar lipids as well as non-polar compounds like cholesterol and possible lung cancer biomarkers. As add-on for PSI, this approach enhances the number of detectable species in one single measurement and seems to be a powerful tool for the rapid analysis of complex biological samples in clinical- and life-sciences. Background and aim: Patients suffering from cancer are reported to have an increased risk of ischemic stroke (IS). We aimed to identify cancer-associated biomarkers found to differentiate between IS associated with cancer from those not associated with cancer. Summary of review: We performed a systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE databases according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The study is reported in PROSPERO (#CRD42022355129). In total, 5563 papers were screened, of which 49 papers were included. Seven biomarkers were identified which had the potential to differentiate between patients who had cancer or stroke or both conditions. D-dimer was the most frequently monitored biomarker, and high levels were significantly associated with cancer-related strokes in (42/44) studies. Fibrinogen was significantly associated with cancer-related strokes in 11/27 studies. A higher level of C-reactive protein, investigated in 19 studies, was associated with cancer-related strokes, but conclusive multivariate analysis was not performed. Finally, the four cancer-associated antigens CA125, CA153, CA199, and carcinoembryonic antigen were only reported on in three to six studies, respectively. These studies all originated from the Guangxi province in China. CA125 was associated with an increased risk of IS in four of six studies. Conclusion: Increased D-dimer seems associated with cancer-related IS. CRP may also be a candidate as a cancer-associated stroke biomarker, but this requires further verification. 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) is an exceptional biomarker of notorious anthrax spores. Therefore, the rapid, sensitive, and selective quantitative detection of DPA is extremely significant and urgent. This paper reports a Zn(II) metal–organic framework with the formula of {[Zn6(NDA)6(DPBT)3] 2H2O·3DMF}n (MOF-1), which consists of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA), 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DPBT), and Zn(II) ions. Structural analysis indicated that MOF-1 is a three-dimensional (3D) network which crystallized in the monoclinic system with the C2/c space group, revealing high pH, solvent, and thermal stability. Luminescence sensing studies demonstrated that MOF-1 had the potential to be a highly selective, sensitive, and recyclable fluorescence sensor for the identification of DPA. Furthermore, fluorescent test paper was made to detect DPA promptly with color changes. The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is projected to reach 13 million in the U.S. by 2050. Although major efforts have been made to avoid this outcome, so far there are no treatments that can stop or reverse the progressive cognitive decline that defines Alzheimer's disease. The utilization of preventative treatment before significant cognitive decline has occurred may ultimately be the solution, necessitating a reliable biomarker of preclinical/prodromal disease stages to determine which older adults are most at risk. Quantitative cerebral blood flow is a promising potential early biomarker for Alzheimer's disease, but the spatiotemporal patterns of altered cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer's disease are not fully understood. The current systematic review compiles the findings of 81 original studies that compared resting gray matter cerebral blood flow in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease and that of cognitively normal older adults and/or assessed the relationship between cerebral blood flow and objective cognitive function. Individuals with Alzheimer's disease had relatively decreased cerebral blood flow in all brain regions investigated, especially the temporoparietal and posterior cingulate, while individuals with mild cognitive impairment had consistent results of decreased cerebral blood flow in the posterior cingulate but more mixed results in other regions, especially the frontal lobe. Most papers reported a positive correlation between regional cerebral blood flow and cognitive function. This review highlights the need for more studies assessing cerebral blood flow changes both spatially and temporally over the course of Alzheimer's disease, as well as the importance of including potential confounding factors in these analyses. In this commentary, we address a paper published by Johnson et al. by assessing the robustness of their method to discover diagnostic biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition, we examine how these newly discovered and previously discovered biomarkers, can play a role in assisting patients with AD and those at risk for developing AD, with an emphasis on the translational hurdles that accompany such discoveries. Introduction: Many patients fail to respond to multiple antidepressant interventions, being defined as "treatment-resistant depression" (TRD) patients. TRD is usually associated with increased severity and chronicity of symptoms, increased risk of comorbidity, and higher suicide rates, which make the clinical management challenging. Efforts to distinguish between TRD patients and those who will respond to treatment have been unfruitful so far. Several studies have tried to identify the biological, psychopathological, and psychosocial correlates of depression, with particular attention to the inflammatory system. In this paper we aim to review available studies assessing the full range of biomarkers in TRD patients in order to reshape TRD definition and improve its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Methods: We searched the most relevant medical databases and included studies reporting original data on possible biomarkers of TRD. The keywords "treatment resistant depression" or "TRD" matched with "biomarker," "inflammation," "hormone," "cytokine" or "biological marker" were entered in PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and SCOPUS databases. Articles were included if they included a comparison with healthy controls (HC). Results: Of the 1878 papers identified, 35 were included in the present study. Higher plasma levels of IL-6 and TNF-" were detected in TRD patients compared to HC. While only a few studies on cortisol have been found, four papers showed elevated levels of C-reactive protein among these patients and four articles focused on immunological cells. Altered kynurenine metabolism in TRD patients was reported in two studies, while contrasting results were found with regard to BDNF. Conclusion: Only a few biological alterations correlate with TRD. TNF-α seems to be the most relevant biomarker to discriminate TRD patients from both HC and treatment-responsive MDD patients. In this paper, we demonstrated the biological effects of acute low-dose neutrons on the whole body of rats and investigated the impact of that level of neutron dose to induce an in vivo radio-adaptive response. To understand the radio-adaptive response, the examined animals were exposed to acute neutron radiation doses of 5 and 10 mSv, followed by a 50 mSv challenge dose after 14 days. After irradiation, all groups receiving single and double doses were kept in cages for one day before sampling. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method was used to estimate the radiation-induced radicals in the blood, and some hematological parameters and lipid peroxidation (MDA) were determined. A comet assay was performed beside some of the antioxidant enzymes [catalase enzyme (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH)]. Seven groups of adult male rats were classified according to their dose of neutron exposure. Measurements of all studied markers are taken one week after harvesting, except for hematological markers, within 2 h. The results indicated lower production of antioxidant enzymes (CAT by 1.18–5.83%, SOD by 1.47–17.8%, and GSH by 11.3–82.1%). Additionally, there was an increase in red cell distribution width (RDW) (from 4.61 to 25.19%) and in comet assay parameters such as Tail Length, (from 6.16 to 10.81 µm), Tail Moment, (from 1.17 to 2.46 µm), and percentage of DNA in tail length (DNA%) (from 9.58 to 17.32%) in all groups exposed to acute doses of radiation ranging from 5 to 50 mSv, respectively. This emphasizes the ascending harmful effect with the increased acute thermal neutron doses. The values of the introduced factor of radio adaptive response for all markers under study reveal that the lower priming dose promotes a higher adaptation response and vice versa. Ultimately, the results indicate significant variations in DNA%, SOD enzyme levels, EPR intensity, total Hb concentration, and RDWs, suggesting their potential use as biomarkers for acute thermal neutron dosimetry. Further research is necessary to validate these measurements as biodosimetry for radiation exposure, including investigations involving the response impact of RAR with varied challenge doses and post-irradiation behavior. Obesity-related ciliopathies, as a group of ciliopathies including Alström Syndrome and Bardet–Biedl Syndrome, exhibit distinct genetic and phenotypic variability. The understanding of these diseases is highly significant for understanding the functions of primary cilia in the human body, particularly regarding the relationship between obesity and primary cilia. The diagnosis of these diseases primarily relies on clinical presentation and genetic testing. However, there is a significant lack of research on biomarkers to elucidate the variability in clinical manifestations, disease progression, prognosis, and treatment responses. Through an extensive literature review, the paper focuses on obesity-related ciliopathies, reviewing the advancements in the field and highlighting the potential roles of biomarkers in the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and prognosis of these diseases. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of themost common gastrointestinalmalignancies in the world. With the rapid pace of life and changes in diet structure, the incidence and mortality of CRC increase year by year posing a serious threat to human health. As the most complex and largest microecosystem in the human body, intestinal microecology is closely related to CRC. It is an important factor that affects and participates in the occurrence and development of CRC. Advances in nextgeneration sequencing technology and metagenomics have provided new insights into the ecology of gut microbes. It also helps to link intestinal flora with CRC, and the relationship between intestinal flora and CRC can be continuously understood from different levels. This paper summarizes the relationship between intestinal flora and CRC and its potential role in the diagnosis of CRC providing evidence for early screening and treatment of CRC. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. However, current detection methods, such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and mammography, have their limitations. Recently, with the advancements in precision medicine and technologies like artificial intelligence, liquid biopsy, specifically utilizing Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), has emerged as a promising approach to detect breast cancer. Liquid biopsy, as a minimally invasive technique, can provide a temporal reflection of breast cancer occurrence and progression, along with a spatial representation of overall tumor information. SERS has been extensively employed for biomarker detection, owing to its numerous advantages such as high sensitivity, minimal sample requirements, strong multi-detection ability, and controllable background interference. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the latest research on the application of SERS in the detection of breast cancer biomarkers, including exosomes, circulating tumor cells (CTCs), miRNA, proteins and others.
