An enhanced Warm Arctic—Cold Eurasia (WACE) pattern has been a notable feature in recent winters of the Northern Hemisphere. However, divergent results between model and observational studies of the WACE still remain. This study evaluates the performance of 39 climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) in simulating the WACE pattern in winter of 1980–2014 and explores the key factors causing the differences in the simulation capability among the models. The results show that the multimodel ensemble (MME) can better simulate the spatial distribution of the WACE pattern than most single models. Models that can/cannot simulate both the climatology and the standard deviation of the Eurasian winter surface air temperature well, especially the latter, usually can/cannot simulate the WACE pattern well. This mainly results from the different abilities of the models to simulate the range and intensity of the warm anomaly in the Barents Sea—Kara seas (BKS) region. Further analysis shows that a good performance of the models in the BKS area is usually related to their ability to simulate location and persistence of Ural blocking (UB), which can transport heat to the BKS region, causing the warm Arctic, and strengthen the westerly trough downstream, cooling central Eurasia. Snow cover (SC) is an important contributor to atmospheric predictability on subseasonal to seasonal time scales. This paper evaluates the submonthly scale cause-and-effect relationship between SC and surface air temperature (SAT) in Eurasia, which has been typically overlooked in previous statistical analyses of subseasonal to seasonal atmospheric predictability. We focus on the November east–west dipolar SC pattern, a dominant large-scale SC phenomenon. We use an information flow analysis, based on information theory, to infer causal relations not revealed by conventional correlation analysis. This analysis indicates a one-way causality from SAT to SC around the west pole (Europe) in boreal autumn (November), implying that SC has little influence on the time evolution of SAT. In contrast, causality from SC to SAT is significant around the east pole (the Mongolian Plateau). An atmospheric model experiment suggests that the SAT response to SC can persist for a month via snow–albedo feedback, although the response of the upper atmosphere in the model is small. Furthermore, the subseasonal hindcasts show that the contribution of SC may affect the predictability of SAT for up to four weeks around the east pole. We suggest that the geographical and climatological atmospheric conditions are favorable for generating a positive albedo feedback as a “hotspot” of SC–SAT coupling around the east pole in autumn. The agreement of our causality analysis with other analytical and modeling approaches underscores the cause-and-effect relationship between SC and SAT and its contribution to the subseasonal predictability over autumnal Eurasia. The relationship between winter cooling in Eurasia and Arctic amplification during the period 1998–2012 under global warming has received increasing attention in recent years. This relationship is controversial and is often studied using model simulations. However, the process of evaluating these models is challenging as a result of the different internal variability among models and between the models and observations. We applied a dynamical adjustment method based on constructed circulation analogs to the model simulations and observations to remove the effects of the internal variability of the atmosphere and then evaluated the performance of the models in simulating the winter surface air temperature (SAT) trends over Eurasia from 1998 to 2012 based on 11 models of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. Our results show that the overall performance of all the model ensemble simulations was poor, but was much improved after applying dynamical adjustment, with the median values of the 11 AMIP ensemble simulations fairly close to the observed winter SAT trends averaged over Eurasia. When considering both the model-simulated SAT trends averaged over Eurasia and the skill scores of the trend pattern, the HadGEM3-GC31-LL simulation gave the best performance among the models with multiple runs. This method allows a more objective evaluation of the performance of models and provides an alternative way to evaluate the ability of models to simulate the "warm Arctic and cold Eurasia" trend pattern. Key processes associated with the leading intraseasonal variability mode of wintertime surface air temperature (SAT) over Eurasia and the Arctic region are investigated in this study. Characterized by a dipole distribution in SAT anomalies centered over north Eurasia and the Arctic, respectively, and coherent temperature anomalies vertically extending from the surface to 300 hPa, this leading intraseasonal SAT mode and associated circulation have pronounced influences on global surface temperature anomalies including the East Asian winter monsoon region. By taking advantage of realistic simulations of the intraseasonal SAT mode in a global climate model, it is illustrated that temperature anomalies in the troposphere associated with the leading SAT mode are mainly due to dynamic processes, especially via the horizontal advection of winter mean temperature by intraseasonal circulation. While the cloud–radiative feedback is not critical in sustaining the temperature variability in the troposphere, it is found to play a crucial role in coupling temperature anomalies at the surface and in the free atmosphere through anomalous surface downward longwave radiation. The variability in clouds associated with the intraseasonal SAT mode is closely linked to moisture anomalies generated by similar advective processes as for temperature anomalies. Model experiments suggest that this leading intraseasonal SAT mode can be sustained by internal atmospheric processes in the troposphere over the mid- to high latitudes by excluding forcings from Arctic sea ice variability, tropical convective variability, and the stratospheric processes. The decadal surface air temperature (SAT) variation over East Asia (EA) is characterized by an opposite pattern, warming over the northern EA along with cooling over the southern EA, and vice versa, fluctuating on decadal time scale. We found that Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has been largely responsible for the opposite decadal SAT variation. Positive (negative) phase of the PDO is related to the northern warming (cooling) and southern cooling (warming) over EA, and the decadal variation of the opposite SAT pattern is highly correlated with the PDO decadal variability, implying a decadal modulation of SAT by PDO. We investigated the influence of PDO on the opposite decadal SAT pattern by employing a dynamical adjustment method based on constructed circulation analogues. The results showed that the PDO associated variability in the large-scale atmospheric circulation over Eurasia, characterized by a dipole structure with cyclonic circulation occupying the northern Eurasia but anticyclonic circulation over the southern Eurasia when in positive PDO phase, is responsible for the opposite decadal SAT pattern. Further analysis on the origin of the anomalous atmospheric circulation was performed by combining observations and climate model simulations. Based on observations and the multi-model simulations of Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), we found a contribution of intrinsic atmospheric dynamics, which was further suggested by the results using the Community Atmosphere Model simulations. • Decadal temperature variation over East Asia is characterized by dipole pattern. • Pacific Decadal Oscillation is responsible for the decadal temperature variation. • Pacific Decadal Oscillation modulates temperature via atmospheric circulation anomaly.
