However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. This paper presents the design and development of a mobile application, built using Flutter, that leverages object detection to enhance the lives of visually impaired individuals. The application addresses a crucial challenge faced by this community: the lack of real-time information about their surroundings. A solution is proposed that utilizes pre-trained machine learning models, potentially through TensorFlow Lite for on-device processing, to identify objects within the user's field of view as captured by the smartphone camera. The application goes beyond simple object recognition; detected objects are translated into natural language descriptions through text-to-speech functionality, providing crucial auditory cues about the environment. Biosensors integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) hold immense potential for transforming healthcare through rapid, automated diagnostics and precision therapeutics. This paper reviews the convergence of biosensing and AI towards developing smart biomedical systems. The fundamentals, historical evolution, and classification of biosensors are presented, highlighting key applications across infections, chronic illnesses, and environmental monitoring. Activation functions play a crucial role in enabling neural networks to carry out tasks with increased flexibility by introducing non-linearity. The selection of appropriate activation functions becomes even more crucial, especially in the context of deeper networks where the objective is to learn more intricate patterns. Among various deep learning tools, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) stand out for their exceptional ability to learn complex visual patterns. In practice, ReLu is commonly employed in convolutional layers of CNNs, yet other activation functions like Swish can demonstrate superior training performance while maintaining good testing accuracy on different datasets. This paper presents an optimally refined strategy for deep learning-based image classification tasks by incorporating CNNs with advanced activation functions and an adjustable setting of layers. A thorough analysis has been conducted to support the effectiveness of various activation functions when coupled with the favorable softmax loss, rendering them suitable for ensuring a stable training process. Purpose: The gradual increase in geriatric issues and global imbalance of the ratio between patients and healthcare professionals have created a demand for intelligent systems with the least error-prone diagnosis results to be used by less medically trained persons and save clinical time. This paper aims at investigating the development of image-based colourimetric analysis. The purpose of recognising such tests is to support wider users to begin a colourimetric test to be used at homecare settings, telepathology and so on. Design/methodology/approach: The concept of an automatic colourimetric assay detection is delivered by utilising two cases. Training deep learning (DL) models on thousands of images of these tests using transfer learning, this paper (1) classifies the type of the assay and (2) classifies the colourimetric results. Findings: This paper demonstrated that the assay type can be recognised using DL techniques with 100% accuracy within a fraction of a second. Some of the advantages of the pre-trained model over the calibration-based approach are robustness, readiness and suitability to deploy for similar applications within a shorter period of time. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt to provide colourimetric assay type classification (CATC) using DL. Humans are capable to learn thousands of visual classifications in their life. Object recognition may be a trivial task for humans, due to photometric and geometric variabilities along with the high degree of intra-class variabilities, it can be a challenging task for machines. Purpose: Historical newspaper collections provide a wealth of information about the past. Although the digitization of these collections significantly improves their accessibility, a large portion of digitized historical newspaper collections, such as those of KBR, the Royal Library of Belgium, are not yet searchable at article-level. However, recent developments in AI-based research methods, such as document layout analysis, have the potential for further enriching the metadata to improve the searchability of these historical newspaper collections. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned issue. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, the authors explore how existing computer vision and machine learning approaches can be used to improve access to digitized historical newspapers. To do this, the authors propose a workflow, using computer vision and machine learning approaches to (1) provide article-level access to digitized historical newspaper collections using document layout analysis, (2) extract specific types of articles (e.g. feuilletons – literary supplements from Le Peuple from 1938), (3) conduct image similarity analysis using (un)supervised classification methods and (4) perform named entity recognition (NER) to link the extracted information to open data. Findings: The results show that the proposed workflow improves the accessibility and searchability of digitized historical newspapers, and also contributes to the building of corpora for digital humanities research. The AI-based methods enable automatic extraction of feuilletons, clustering of similar images and dynamic linking of related articles. Originality/value: The proposed workflow enables automatic extraction of articles, including detection of a specific type of article, such as a feuilleton or literary supplement. In this paper, 1,538 papers retrieved with the keywords "sports artificial intelligence (AI)" on the Web of Science database since 2007 were taken as the data source, and the Cite Space V software was used to visualize and analyze them. A visual knowledge graph was used to streamline the countries, institutions and authors conducting sports AI research, discipline distribution, research hotspots and development trends in the past 15 years. Subsequently, its development direction and research progress were discussed. Sports AI was widely distributed, with the US, China and the UK leading the way. The most prolific authors and teams in research on sports AI were concentrated in American universities. Their main research direction is to develop and improve smart wearable devices based on machine learning and deep learning technologies for different groups of people. Research on sports AI involved multiple disciplines, which mainly applied and referred to research methodologies and theories on engineering, computer science and sports science. It could be seen from the frequency and centrality of keywords that in the current field of sports AI, machine learning is the main direction, artificial neural networks is the main algorithm, and practical and empirical research based on data mining is the focus. The research hotspots were divided into three major clusters: physical health promotion, sports injury prevention and control, and athletic performance enhancement. How to introduce intelligent technology into sports for a perfect integration still has an arduous and long way to go. Vehicle re-identification employs computer vision to determine the presence of specific vehicles in images or video sequences, often using vehicle appearance for identification due to the challenge of capturing complete license plate information. Addressing the performance issues caused by fog, such as image blur and loss of key positional information, this paper introduces a multi-task learning framework incorporating a multi-scale fusion defogging method (MsF). This method effectively mitigates image blur to produce clearer images, which are then processed by the re-identification branch. Additionally, a phase attention mechanism is introduced to adaptively preserve crucial details. Utilizing advanced artificial intelligence techniques and deep learning algorithms, the framework is evaluated on both synthetic and real datasets, showing significant improvements in mean average precision (mAP)—an increase of 2.5% to 87.8% on the synthetic dataset and 1.4% to 84.1% on the real dataset. These enhancements demonstrate the method's superior performance over the semi-supervised joint defogging learning (SJDL) model, particularly under challenging foggy conditions, thus enhancing vehicle re-identification accuracy and deepening the understanding of applying multi-task learning frameworks in adverse visual environments. Objective: This paper explores machine learning methods for exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) diagnostics. Traditional diagnostic approaches like CLE scoring face subjectivity, limiting precise objective assessments. Machine learning is introduced as a theoretical solution to potentially overcome these limitations and improve diagnostic precision. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to explore the integration of machine learning techniques in the diagnostics of EILO. Result: Three machine learning methods for the segmentation of laryngeal images were discovered: fully convolutional network, Mask R-CNN, and 3D VOSNet. Our findings reveal that the integration of machine learning with EILO diagnostics remains a largely untapped research domain, providing significant room for further exploration. Conclusions: The integration of ML techniques for EILO diagnostics has the potential to be a helpful tool for clinicians. The application of computer vision ML methods, such as image segmentation, to delineate laryngeal structures paves the way for a more objective assessment. Amazon Go utilises advanced technologies such as computer vision, deep learning algorithms, and sensor fusion to create a unique shopping experience. Customers are able to enter the store and shop without having to wait in lines or interact with other customers, creating a streamlined and efficient shopping experience. Additionally, Amazon Go utilises artificial intelligence to track customer movement and automatically charges customers for items they take out of the store, which eliminates the need for traditional checkouts. Photovoltaic (PV) fault detection is crucial because undetected PV faults can lead to significant energy losses, with some cases experiencing losses of up to 10%. The efficiency of PV systems depends upon the reliable detection and diagnosis of faults. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has been a growing trend in addressing these issues. The goal of this systematic review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in AI-based methodologies for PV fault detection, consolidating the key findings from 31 research papers. An initial pool of 142 papers were identified, from which 31 were selected for in-depth review following the PRISMA guidelines. The title, objective, methods, and findings of each paper were analyzed, with a focus on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches. ML and DL are particularly suitable for PV fault detection because of their capacity to process and analyze large amounts of data to identify complex patterns and anomalies. This study identified several AI techniques used for fault detection in PV systems, ranging from classical ML methods like k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest to more advanced deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Quantum circuits and infrared imagery were also explored as potential solutions. The analysis found that DL models, in general, outperformed traditional ML models in accuracy and efficiency. This study shows that AI methodologies have evolved and been increasingly applied in PV fault detection. The integration of AI in PV fault detection offers high accuracy and effectiveness. The flourishing realm of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) as well as autonomous vehicles (AVs) presents exceptional opportunities to enhance safe driving. An essential aspect of this transformation involves monitoring driver behavior through observable physiological indicators, including the driver's facial expressions, hand placement on the wheels, and the driver's body postures. An artificial intelligence (AI) system under consideration alerts drivers about potentially unsafe behaviors using real-time voice notifications. This paper offers an all-embracing survey of neural network-based methodologies for studying these driver bio-metrics, presenting an exhaustive examination of their advantages and drawbacks. The evaluation includes two relevant datasets, separately categorizing ten different in-cabinet behaviors, providing a systematic classification for driver behaviors detection. This paper presents an innovative AI-based method for autonomous inspection, designed to enhance energy production efficiency by optimizing cleaning strategies for soiled photovoltaic panels, using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze panel conditions and environmental factors in real-time, allowing for targeted cleaning interventions. Based on the advanced YOLOv8 deep learning algorithm and computer vision approach, the proposed method offers distinct advantages in real-time detection and classification of various types of soiling and dust accumulation compared on solar panels to traditional methods, and underwent satisfactory testing across diverse scenarios. The NVIDIA Jetson Nano, the Raspberry Pi4 embedded devices, and the Raspberry Pi4 combined with NCS2 accelerator are used for implementing our approach. A comparison aims to provide a detailed exploration of the most suitable embedded platform for deploying our advanced system was discussed. This comparison considers processing speed and accuracy, energy consumption, and overall performance in executing the computationally intensive tasks. The results demonstrate that our model achieves high accuracy in detecting soiling and enhancing the model's detection speed. With an average precision of 99.5%, this approach ensures accurate fault identification, underscoring the effectiveness of computer vision using deep learning algorithms for detection tasks across a wide range of scenarios. Increasing computational power and improving deep learning methods have made computer vision technologies pervasively common in urban environments. Their applications in policing, traffic management, and documenting public spaces are increasingly common (Ridgeway 2018, Coifman et al. 1998, Sun et al. 2020). Despite the often-discussed biases in the algorithms' training and unequally borne benefits (Khosla et al. 2012), almost all applications similarly reduce urban experiences to simplistic, reductive, and mechanistic measures. There is a lack of context, depth, and specificity in these practices that enables semantic knowledge or analysis within urban contexts, especially within the context of using and occupying urban space. This paper will critique existing uses of artificial intelligence and computer vision in urban practices to propose a new framework for understanding people, action, and public space. This paper revisits Geertz's (1973) use of thick descriptions in generating interpretive theories of culture and activity and uses this lens to establish a framework to approach evaluating the varied uses of computer vision technologies that weigh meaning. By discussing cases of implemented examples of urban computer vision—from LinkNYC and Numina's urban measurements to the Detroit Police's use of DataWorks Plus's facial recognition technology—it proposes a framework for evaluating the thickness of the algorithm's conclusions against the computational method's complexity required to produce that outcome. Further, we discuss how the framework's positioning may differ (and conflict) between different users of the technology, from engineer to urban planner and policymaker, to citizen. This paper also discusses how the current use and training of deep learning algorithms and how this process limits semantic learning and proposes three potential methodologies toward gaining a more contextually specific, urban-semantic, description of urban space relevant to urbanists. This paper contributes to the critical conversations regarding the proliferation of artificial intelligence by challenging the current applications of these technologies in the urban environment by highlighting their failures within this context while also proposing an evolution of these algorithms that may ultimately make them sensitive and useful within this spatial and cultural milieu. Although artificial intelligence enables the detection of abnormalities in medical images and is widely used as a computer vision technology, many researchers have focused on the detection of only one disease related to diabetes, which is diabetic retinopathy. In fact, patients face a significant risk of two other illnesses: cataract and glaucoma. In this article, we examined the diagnosis of these three eye diseases caused by diabetes and compared four approaches to classify these conditions. The proposed approaches are based on the transfer learning technique. We started by filtering, preparing, and augmenting the dataset, then applied transfer learning for feature extraction using two different architectures: VGG16 and RESNET50. We also investigated the impact of using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization on the accuracy and precision of the models. This filter was used in a pre-training step for diabetic retinopathy diagnosis and in this paper proved its efficiency for glaucoma and cataract too. The final layers were replaced by Random Forest for classification. Models performed acceptable accuracies of 89.17% and 85.64% without operating contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization and achieved better results when applying contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization, with an accuracy of 97.48% and 96.66% for VGG16 and RESNET 50, respectively. Introduction: The emergence of automated machine learning or AutoML has raised an interesting trend of no-code and low-code machine learning where most tasks in the machine learning pipeline can possibly be automated without support from human data scientists. While it sounds reasonable that we should leave repetitive trial-and-error tasks of designing complex network architectures and tuning a lot of hyperparameters to AutoML, leading research using AutoML is still scarce. Thereby, the overall purpose of this case study is to investigate the gap between current AutoML frameworks and practical machine learning development. Case description: First, this paper confirms the increasing trend of AutoML via an indirect indicator of the numbers of search results in Google trend, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library during 2012–2021. Then, the three most popular AutoML frameworks (i.e., Auto-Sklearn, AutoKeras, and Google Cloud AutoML) are inspected as AutoML's representatives; the inspection includes six comparative aspects. Based on the features available in the three AutoML frameworks investigated, our case study continues to observe recent machine learning research regarding the background of image-based machine learning. This is because the field of computer vision spans several levels of machine learning from basic to advanced and it has been one of the most popular fields in studying machine learning and artificial intelligence lately. Our study is specific to the context of image-based road health inspection systems as it has a long history in computer vision, allowing us to observe solution transitions from past to present. Discussion and evaluation: After confirming the rising numbers of AutoML search results in the three search engines, our study regarding the three AutoML representatives further reveals that there are many features that can be used to automate the development pipeline of image-based road health inspection systems. Nevertheless, we find that recent works in image-based road health inspection have not used any form of AutoML in their works. Digging into these recent works, there are two main problems that best conclude why most researchers do not use AutoML in their image-based road health inspection systems yet. Firstly, it is because AutoML's trial-and-error decision involves much extra computation compared to human-guided decisions. Secondly, using AutoML adds another layer of non-interpretability to a model. As these two problems are the major pain points in modern neural networks and deep learning, they may require years to resolve, delaying the mass adoption of AutoML in image-based road health inspection systems. Conclusions: In conclusion, although AutoML's utilization is not mainstream at this moment, we believe that the trend of AutoML will continue to grow. This is because there exists a demand for AutoML currently, and in the future, more demand for no-code or low-code machine learning development alternatives will grow together with the expansion of machine learning solutions. Nevertheless, this case study focuses on selected papers whose authors are researchers who can publish their works in academic conferences and journals. In the future, the study should continue to include observing novice users, non-programmer users, and machine learning practitioners in order to discover more insights from non-research perspectives. The cognitive screening test is a brief cognitive examination that could be easily performed in a clinical setting. However, one of the main drawbacks of this test was that only a paper-based version was available, which restricts the test to be manually administered and graded by medical personnel at the health centers. The main solution to these problems was to develop a potential remote assessment for screening individuals with cognitive impairment. Currently, multiple studies have been adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technology into these tests, evolving the conventional paper-based neurocognitive test into a digitized AI-assisted neurocognitive test. These studies provided credible evidence of the potential of AI-augmented cognitive screening tests to be better and provided the framework for future studies to further improve the implementation of AI technology in the cognitive screening test. At present, in the age of computers and automation of services, deep learning (DL) technology, mainly the subset of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), is expressively used in innumerable domains of computer vision such as data analysis, image recognition, classification, natural language processing, and many more. It has become the foremost choice of researchers as of its effectiveness in producing decent results. This paper presents detailed and analytical literature starting from the very elementary level to the recent trends of this trending technology while focusing on the most used DL model, that is, convolutional neural network and its pretrained models for image classification and object detection. It also reviews diverse existing current literature based on this. Further, a brief introduction of AI, ML, and DL has also been presented, making the foundation for the readers. As pretrained models continuously give an upper edge to DL over ML and other technologies, 23 most popular pretrained models with their architectural diagrams have also been presented. This paper aims to summarize and analyze all the concepts used to formulate DL and its models. Also, we have emphasized more on the GoogleNet models and the entire Inception modules in detail. Finally, the fascinating applications and discussion on integral components of DL have been presented. There has been growing interest in the application of smart technologies for hazard management. However, very limited studies have reviewed the trends of such technologies in the context of flash floods. This study reviews innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and robotics used for flash flood early warnings and susceptibility predictions. Articles published between 2010 and 2023 were manually collected from scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Based on the review, AI/ML has been applied to flash flood susceptibility and early warning prediction in 64% of the published papers, followed by the IoT (19%), cloud computing (6%), and robotics (2%). Among the most common AI/ML methods used in susceptibility and early warning predictions are random forests and support vector machines. However, further optimization and emerging technologies, such as computer vision, are required to improve these technologies. AI/ML algorithms have demonstrated very accurate prediction performance, with receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and areas under the curve (AUC) greater than 0.90. However, there is a need to improve on these current models with large test datasets. Through AI/ML, IoT, and cloud computing technologies, early warnings can be disseminated to targeted communities in real time via electronic media, such as SMS and social media platforms. In spite of this, these systems have issues with internet connectivity, as well as data loss. Additionally, Al/ML used a number of topographical variables (such as slope), geological variables (such as lithology), and hydrological variables (such as stream density) to predict susceptibility, but the selection of these variables lacks a clear theoretical basis and has inconsistencies. To generate more reliable flood risk assessment maps, future studies should also consider sociodemographic, health, and housing data. Considering future climate change impacts, susceptibility or early warning studies may be projected under different climate change scenarios to help design long-term adaptation strategies. Recently, ConvNeXt and blueprint separable convolution (BSConv) constructed from standard ConvNet modules have demonstrated competitive performance in advanced computer vision tasks. This paper proposes an efficient model (BCRN) based on BSConv and the ConvNeXt residual structure for single image super-resolution, which achieves superior performance with very low parametric numbers. Specifically, the residual block (BCB) of the BCRN utilizes the ConvNeXt residual structure and BSConv to significantly reduce the number of parameters. Within the residual block, enhanced spatial attention and contrast-aware channel attention modules are simultaneously introduced to prioritize valuable features within the network. Multiple residual blocks are then stacked to form the backbone network, with Dense connections utilized between them to enhance feature utilization. Our model boasts extremely low parameters compared to other state-of-the-art lightweight models, while experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate its excellent performance. There is a growing trend of using artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning algorithms, in medical diagnostics, revolutionizing healthcare by improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient outcomes. However, the use of artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics comes with the critical need to explain the reasoning behind artificial intelligence‐based predictions and ensure transparency in decision‐making. Explainable artificial intelligence has emerged as a crucial research area to address the need for transparency and interpretability in medical diagnostics. Explainable artificial intelligence techniques aim to provide insights into the decision‐making process of artificial intelligence systems, enabling clinicians to understand the factors the algorithms consider in reaching their predictions. This paper presents a detailed review of saliency‐based (visual) methods, such as class activation methods, which have gained popularity in medical imaging as they provide visual explanations by highlighting the regions of an image most influential in the artificial intelligence's decision. We also present the literature on non‐visual methods, but the focus will be on visual methods. We also use the existing literature to experiment with infrared breast images for detecting breast cancer. Towards the end of this paper, we also propose an "attention guided Grad‐CAM" that enhances the visualizations for explainable artificial intelligence. The existing literature shows that explainable artificial intelligence techniques are not explored in the context of infrared medical images and opens up a wide range of opportunities for further research to make clinical thermography into assistive technology for the medical community. Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on our planet, and essential to the livelihood of hundreds of millions of people who depend on them for food security, income from tourism and coastal protection. Unfortunately, most coral reefs are existentially threatened by global climate change and local anthropogenic pressures. To better understand the dynamics underlying deterioration of reefs, monitoring at high spatial and temporal resolution is key. However, conventional monitoring methods for quantifying coral cover and species abundance are limited in scale due to the extensive manual labor required. Although computer vision tools have been employed to aid in this process, in particular structure‐from‐motion (SfM) photogrammetry for 3D mapping and deep neural networks for image segmentation, analysis of the data products creates a bottleneck, effectively limiting their scalability.This paper presents a new paradigm for mapping underwater environments from ego‐motion video, unifying 3D mapping systems that use machine learning to adapt to challenging conditions under water, combined with a modern approach for semantic segmentation of images.The method is exemplified on coral reefs in the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, demonstrating high‐precision 3D semantic mapping at unprecedented scale with significantly reduced required labor costs: given a trained model, a 100 m video transect acquired within 5 min of diving with a cheap consumer‐grade camera can be fully automatically transformed into a semantic point cloud within 5 min. We demonstrate the spatial accuracy of our method and the semantic segmentation performance (of at least 80% total accuracy), and publish a large dataset of ego‐motion videos from the northern Gulf of Aqaba, along with a dataset of video frames annotated for dense semantic segmentation of benthic classes.Our approach significantly scales up coral reef monitoring by taking a leap towards fully automatic analysis of video transects. The method advances coral reef transects by reducing the labor, equipment, logistics, and computing cost. This can help to inform conservation policies more efficiently. Featured Application: A review of Artificial Intelligence-driven approaches to 3D printing of large-scale architectural structures can provide practitioners and academic researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of the field, reinforce innovative design, inform material and fabrication method choices, support sustainability goals, and provide practical insights through the review of different cases. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 3D printing (3DP) play considerable roles in what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, by developing data- and machine-intelligence-based integrated production technologies. In architecture, this shift was induced by increasingly complex design requirements, posing important challenges for real-world design implementation, large-scale structure fabrication, and production quality standardization. The study systematically reviews the application of AI techniques in all stages of creating 3D-printed architectural structures and provides a comprehensive image of the development in the field. The research goals are to (1) offer a comprehensive critical analysis of the body of literature; (2) identify and categorize approaches to integrating AI in the production of 3D-printed structures; (3) identify and discuss challenges and opportunities of AI integration in architectural production of 3D-printed structures; and (4) identify research gaps and provide recommendations for future research. The findings indicate that AI is an emerging addition to the 3DP process, mainly transforming it through the real-time adjustment of the design or printing parameters, enhanced printing quality control, or prediction and optimization of key design features. However, the potential of the application of AI in large-scale architectural 3D printing still needs to be explored. The field of artificial intelligence is seeing the increased application of satellite imagery to analyse poverty in its various manifestations. This nascent but rapidly growing intersection of scholarship holds the potential to help us better understand poverty by leveraging big data and recent advances in machine vision. In this study, we statistically analyse the literature in the expanding field of welfare and poverty predictions from the combination of machine learning and satellite imagery. Here, we apply an integrative review method to extract key data on factors related to the predictive power of welfare. We found that the most important factors correlated to the predictive power of welfare are the number of pre‐processing steps employed, the number of datasets used, the type of welfare indicator targeted and the choice of AI model. Studies that used stock measure indicators (assets) as targets achieved better performance—17 percentage points higher—in predicting welfare than those that targeted flow measures (income and consumption) ones. Additionally, we found that the combination of machine learning and deep learning significantly increases predictive power—by as much as 15 percentage points—compared to using either alone. Surprisingly, we found that the spatial resolution of the satellite imagery used is important but not critical to the performance as the relationship is positive but not statistically significant. Frozen sections are a useful pathologic tool, but variable image quality may impede the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in their interpretation. We aimed to identify the current research on machine learning models trained or tested on frozen section images. We searched PubMed and Web of Science for articles presenting new machine learning models published in any year. Eighteen papers met all inclusion criteria. All papers presented at least one novel model trained or tested on frozen section images. Overall, convolutional neural networks tended to have the best performance. When physicians were able to view the output of the model, they tended to perform better than either the model or physicians alone at the tested task. Models trained on frozen sections performed well when tested on other slide preparations, but models trained on only formalin‐fixed tissue performed significantly worse across other modalities. This suggests not only that machine learning can be applied to frozen section image processing, but also use of frozen section images may increase model generalizability. Plant diseases pose a major threat to agricultural production and the food supply chain, as they expose plants to potentially disruptive pathogens that can affect the lives of those who are associated with it. Deep learning has been applied in a range of fields such as object detection, autonomous vehicles, fraud detection etc. Several researchers have tried to implement deep learning techniques in precision agriculture. However, there are pros and cons to the approaches they have opted for disease detection and identification. In this survey, we have made an attempt to capture the significant advancements in machine-learning based disease detection. We have discussed prevalent datasets and techniques that have been employed as well as highlighted emerging approaches being used for plant disease detection. By exploring these advancements, we aim to present a comprehensive overview of the prominent approaches in precision agriculture, along with their associated challenges and potential improvements. This paper delves into the challenges associated with the implementation and briefly discusses the future trends. Overall, this paper presents a bird's eye view of plant disease datasets, deep learning techniques, their accuracies and the challenges associated with them. Our insights will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming pervasive in most engineering domains, and railway transport is no exception. However, due to the plethora of different new terms and meanings associated with them, there is a risk that railway practitioners, as several other categories, will get lost in those ambiguities and fuzzy boundaries, and hence fail to catch the real opportunities and potential of machine learning, artificial vision, and big data analytics, just to name a few of the most promising approaches connected to AI. The scope of this paper is to introduce the basic concepts and possible applications of AI to railway academics and practitioners. To that aim, this paper presents a structured taxonomy to guide researchers and practitioners to understand AI techniques, research fields, disciplines, and applications, both in general terms and in close connection with railway applications such as autonomous driving, maintenance, and traffic management. The important aspects of ethics and explainability of AI in railways are also introduced. The connection between AI concepts and railway subdomains has been supported by relevant research addressing existing and planned applications in order to provide some pointers to promising directions. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are growing in popularity thanks to their ability to produce models that exhibit unprecedented performance in domains that include computer vision, natural language processing and code generation. However, such models tend to be very large and complex and impossible to understand using traditional analysis or human scrutiny. Conversely, Symbolic Regression methods attempt to produce models that are relatively small and (potentially) human-readable. In this domain, Genetic Programming (GP) has proven to be a powerful search strategy that achieves state-of-the-art performance. This paper presents a new GP-based feature transformation method called M5GP, which is hybridized with multiple linear regression to produce linear models, implemented to exploit parallel processing on graphical processing units for efficient computation. M5GP is the most recent variant from a family of feature transformation methods (M2GP, M3GP and M4GP) that have proven to be powerful tools for both classification and regression tasks applied to tabular data. The proposed method was evaluated on SRBench v2.0, the current standard benchmarking suite for Symbolic Regression. Results show that M5GP achieves performance that is competitive with the state-of-the-art, achieving a top-three rank on the most difficult subset of black-box problems. Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is a process that removes material from conductive workpieces by using sequential electrical discharges. The morphology of the craters formed by these discharges is influenced by various process parameters and affects the quality and efficiency of the machining. To understand and optimize the WEDM process, it is essential to identify and characterize single craters from microscopy images. However, manual labeling of craters is tedious and prone to errors. This paper presents a novel approach to detect and segment single craters using state-of-the-art computer vision techniques. The YOLOv8 model, a convolutional neural network-based object detection technique, is fine-tuned on a custom dataset of WEDM craters to locate and enclose them with tight bounding boxes. The segment anything model, a vision transformer-based instance segmentation technique, is applied to the cropped images of individual craters to delineate their shape and size. Geometric analysis of the segmented craters reveals significant variations in their contour and area depending on the energy setting, while the wire diameter has minimal influence.
