Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is a major public health concern with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to evaluate the serotype distribution, antimicrobial resistance changes, clonal composition, and virulence factors of S. pneumoniae isolates causing pneumococcal disease in northeast China from 2000 to 2021. A total of 1,454 S. pneumoniae isolates were included, with 568 invasive strains and 886 non-invasive strains. The patients from whom the S. pneumoniae were isolated ranged in age from 26 days to 95 years, with those ≤ 5 years old comprising the largest group (67.19%). 19 F, 19 A, 23 F, 14, and 6B were the most common serotypes, of which 19 A and 19 F were the main serotypes of invasive and non-invasive S. pneumoniae, respectively. CC271 was the most common multilocus sequence type. Serotype 14 had the lowest expression of cbpA, rrgA, and psrP genes, but expression levels of 19 A and 19 F genes were similar. All isolates were sensitive to ertapenem, moxifloxacin, linezolid, and vancomycin but highly resistant to macrolides, tetracyclines, and cotrimoxazole. Simultaneous resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole was common pattern among multidrug-resistant isolates. Non-invasive S. pneumoniae had higher resistance to β-lactam antibiotics than invasive strains. 19 A and 19 F were the main strains of penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae. The resistance rate of β-lactam antibiotics decreased from 2017 to 2021 compared to previous periods. Antibiotic overprescription in China has long been considered a problem on the supply side, linked to the financial incentives of physicians. Based on the conversation analysis of 187 video-recorded naturally occurring medical consultations in Chinese paediatric primary care settings, this study finds that the driving force behind the problem of antibiotic overprescription in China has changed. Physicians use a low-authority communication style to recommend treatment, displaying a low level of medical authority and a willingness to accommodate caregivers' preferences in antibiotic prescribing decisions. The problem is now attributed to physician-caregiver interaction, doctor-patient relationship and the antibiotic-saturated prescribing culture. Practice implications involve deepening the understanding of the evolving nature of the antibiotic overprescription problem in China, building trust between physicians and patients/caregivers in order to facilitate the physicians' role as the gatekeeper of antibiotics and providing training programmes to help physicians develop effective communication skills., (© 2023 Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness.)

Antibiotics are one of the greatest inventions in human history and are used worldwide on an enormous scale. Besides its extensive usage in medical and veterinary arenas to treat and prevent the infection, its application is very prominent in other fields, including agriculture, aquaculture, and horticulture. In recent decades, the increased consumption of antibiotics in China saw a vast increase in its production and disposal in various environments. However, in this post-antibiotic era, the abuse and misuse of these valuable compounds could lead to the unreversible consequence of drug resistance. In China, antibiotics are given a broad discussion in various fields to reveal their impact on both human/animals health and the environment. To our knowledge, we are the first paper to look back at the development trend of antibiotic-related studies in China with qualitative and quantitative bibliometric analysis from the past decades. Our study identified and analyzed 5559 papers from its inception (1991) to December 6, 2021, from the Web of Science Core Collection database. However, with few authors and institutions focusing on long-term studies, we found the quality of contributions was uneven. Studies mainly focused on areas such as food science, clinical research, and environmental studies, including molecular biology, genetics and environmental, ecotoxicology, and nutrition, which indicate possible primary future trends. Our study reports on including potentially new keywords, studies' milestones, and their contribution to antibiotic research. Despite limited biomonitoring studies suggesting extensive antibiotic exposure in general population, the body burden of antibiotics in young children and their potential health risks remain unclear. To assess the antibiotic exposure levels in young children, 508 preschoolers aged 3-6 years were recruited from eastern China in 2022, and a total of 50 representative antibiotics from 8 categories, including 17 human antibiotics (HAs), 4 antibiotics preferred as HAs (PHAs), 16 veterinary antibiotics (VAs), and 13 antibiotics preferred as VAs (PVAs), were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were calculated to evaluate the health risks, and multivariate logistic regression was applied to examine diet with antibiotic exposure. Our results showed that there were 41 antibiotics detected in children's urine, and the overall detection frequency was as high as 100%. Sulfonamides, macrolides, β-lactams, quinolones, and azoles were the predominant categories of antibiotic detected. Among the studied children, 6.5% had a sum of estimated daily intake (EDI) of all VAs and PVAs larger than 1 μg/kg/day. Notably, 10.0% of the children had a microbiological HI value exceeding 1, primarily contributed by ciprofloxacin. Children with higher consumption of seafood had a relatively increased exposure to multiple categories of antibiotics, including HAs, VAs, quinolones, azoles, and others. Principal component analysis suggested that "Aquatic products and viscera preferred dietary pattern" scores were positively correlated with the exposure levels of ciprofloxacin (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02-1.47) and carbadox (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.10-1.59), and a relatively increased exposure of PHAs was realized in children with higher "Meat-egg preferred dietary pattern" scores (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03-1.50). Antibiotics are emerging contaminants and widely used in human healthcare, livestock, and aquaculture. The toxicity posed by antibiotics and their mixtures in sediments depends on their bioavailability. Now, the bioavailability of organic materials can be determined accurately by the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. This technique was used for the first time ever in this study to evaluate in detail the integral toxicity of antibiotics in sediments to aquatic biota. Zhelin Bay was selected as a case study, because it is the largest mariculture area in eastern Guangdong, South China. Two antibiotics, chlortetracycline (CTC) (A) and sulfachlorpyridazine (SCP), were detected at average concentrations of 2.83 and 1.14 ng/ml, respectively. The other fifteen antibiotics were undetectable. The single risk assessment based on the risk quotient (RQ) of CTC and SCP shows that a relatively low risk has occurred. After this careful assessment of probabilistic ecotoxicological risks, the combined toxicity of antibiotic mixtures (CTC and SCP) clearly indicates that the toxicity probability of surface sediments to aquatic organisms was relatively low (0.23%)., (© 2023. The widespread use of chemical disinfectants and antibiotics poses a major threat to food safety and human health. However, the mechanisms of co-transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and biocides and metal resistance genes (BMRGs) of foodborne pathogens in the food chain is still unclear. This study isolated 343 E. coli strains from animal-derived foods in Beijing and incorporated online data of human-derived E. coli strains from NCBI. Our results demonstrated a relatively uniform distribution of strains from various regions in Beijing, indicating a lack of region-specific clustering. Additionally, predominant sequence types varied between food- and human-derived strains, suggesting a preference for different hosts and environments. Phenotypic association analysis showed that the chlorine disinfectants peroxides had a significant positive correlation with tetracyclines. Many more ARGs and BMRGs were enriched in human-associated E. coli compared with those in chicken- and pork-origin. The quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) resistance gene qacEΔ1 had a strong correlation with aminoglycoside resistance gene aadA5, folate pathway antagonist resistance gene dfrA17, sul1 and macrolide resistance gene mph(A). The correlation results indicated a significant association between the copper resistance gene cluster pco and the silver resistance gene cluster sil. Coexistence of many resistance genes was observed within the qacEΔ1 gene structure, with qacEΔ1-sul1 being the most common combination. In 2018, China implemented the Veterinary Antimicrobial Use Reduction Action to curb the rapid development of antibiotic resistance (AR). However, the AR-related pollutions in animal farms after the reduction policy has been poorly investigated. Here, we performed a comprehensive investigation combining UPLC-MS/MS, metagenomic, and bacterial genomic analyses in eight representative large-scale chicken farms in Guangdong, China. Our results showed that antibiotics and ARGs contaminations were more severe in broiler farms than in layer farms. Notably, diverse tet(X) variants were prevalent in the chicken farms. These tet(X)s was carried by diverse E. coli lineages and obviously correlated with ISCR2 and IS1B transposases. The resistomes in chicken farms was significantly correlated with microbial community, and multiple factor analyses indicated that the joint effect of antibiotics-microbial community-MGEs was the most dominant driver of ARGs. Host tracking identified a variety of ARG bacterial hosts and the co-occurrence of ARGs-MRGs-MGEs. Source tracking indicated that the inherent component represented the main feature of resistomes in different hosts, while ARG transfer between the chicken gut and farm environments were frequent. A multiperspective evaluation of AR risk revealed that the early effect of antibiotic reduction was exhibited by the mitigation of maximum level of risky ARGs, prevalence of environmental AR pathogens, and HGT potential of ARGs mediated by phage structures. Antibiotics are widely used in China's aquaculture, agricultural, and clinical settings and can lead to antibiotic resistance in various pathogens. Although the pooled prevalence estimate (PPE) and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in food and clinical settings has been extensively studied, a comprehensive analysis of the published literature is lacking. We conducted a comprehensive search for research indicators for 2001-2020 in eight major Chinese and English literature databases. Antibiotic PPE and resistance trends of 5933 and 29,451 E. coli isolates were screened and analysed in 35 food studies (total 1821) and 62 clinical studies (total 5159). E. coli strains derived from food had the highest antibiotic resistance rate to tetracycline (TET, 71.3 %), followed by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT, 62.5 %) and cefazolin (CFZ, 36.2 %). E. coli strains isolated from clinical environments were highly resistant to piperacillin (PIP, 71.7 %), TET (68.3 %) and CFZ (60.9 %), consistent with foodborne E. coli drug resistance patterns. E. coli strains isolated from food and clinical samples collected in laboratories carry multiple antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), such as bla TEM , gryA, gryB, sul1, and tetA, making E. coli a reservoir of ARGs. During the process of cleaning aquaculture ponds, the drainage contributes significantly to antibiotic pollution in the surrounding water environment. Therefore, we conducted a study on the distribution of 26 antibiotics in 57 ponds within the Taihu Lake basin. The results revealed that the detection frequency of antibiotics ranged from 1.75 % to 80.7 %, with the overall detection concentrations ranging from 3.27 to 708.72 ng/L. Among them, the detection rate of 8 antibiotics exceeded 50 %. Regarding the spatial distribution, the concentration of antibiotics was relatively high in aquaculture ponds located in the Changzhou area, with the highest concentration reaching 708.72 ng/L. This observation is likely due to the large size and intensive breeding practices in Changzhou. Fish ponds exhibited a significantly higher total antibiotic concentration of 3.27 to 445.57 ng/L compared to crab ponds (13.01 to 206.30 ng/L) and shrimp ponds (23.17 to 107.40 ng/L). Quinolones and sulfonamides were the predominant antibiotic classes found in fish ponds, accounting for 51.49 % of the total antibiotic concentration. Notably, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and enrofloxacin (ENR) exhibited the highest antibiotic concentrations. Risk assessments demonstrated that SMX, ENR, and ofloxacin (OFX) contributed significantly to ecological risks. Furthermore, the study found that the tertiary constructed wetland treatment process achieved a remarkable removal rate of 92.44 % for antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater, while other treatment processes displayed limited effectiveness in removing antibiotics. Background: The bark of Chinese fir ( Cunninghamia lanceolata ), the largest afforestation tree species in the forest areas of southern China, is susceptible to injuries and bites from small animals. The population of small animals has recently increased owing to improvements in the ecological environment across various forested areas, thus increasing the incidence of injuries in the bark of Chinese fir. Following such injuries, the bark secretes light yellow or milky white secretions, the function of which remains unclear. The present study aimed to reveal the antibacterial effect of exudates of different Chinese fir cultivars on five bacterial species., Methods: The research involved three-year-old plantations of Taxus chinensis var . koraiensis and Yangkou3 and three-year-old container plantations of Taxus chinensis var . pendula , Yang 061, and Yang 020. The antibacterial effects of exudates were analyzed using the filter paper diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration for each secretion and the bacterial inhibition zone were determined., Results: The exudates of the different Chinese fir bark exhibited notable antibacterial effects on Bacillus subtilis , Salmonella paratyphi B , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Escherichia coli , and Staphylococcus aureus . However, the extent of these antibacterial effects varied among the different Chinese fir cultivars, as the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the exudates against the five bacterial species varied. The mean MIC of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was lower potency, whereas that of Escherichia coli was the lowest. Notably, the antibacterial efficacy of the exudates was mainly influenced by the composition of the secretions rather than the number of secretions, with organic acid compounds and terpenoids potentially contributing to the antibacterial effects against E. coli and Bacillus subtilis , respectively., Conclusion: This study demonstrates the antibacterial effect of wound secretion of different Chinese fir cultivars, highlighting their varying efficacy on different bacterial species. Although antibiotics are widely detected in river water, their quantitative relationships with influencing factors in rivers remain largely unexplored. Here, 15 widely used antibiotics were comprehensively analyzed in the Dongjiang River of the Pearl River system. The total antibiotic concentration in river water ranged from 13.84 to 475.04 ng/L, with fluoroquinolones increasing from 11 % in the upstream to 38 % in the downstream. The total antibiotic concentration was high downstream and significantly correlated with the spatial distribution of population density, animal production, and land-use type. The total risk quotient of antibiotics for algae was higher than that for crustaceans and fish. Based on the optimized risk quotient method, amoxicillin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin were identified as priority antibiotics. The key predictors of antibiotic levels were screened through Mantel test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models. Water physicochemical parameters significantly impacted antibiotics and could be used as easy-to-measure surrogates associated with elevated antibiotics. Cropland negatively affected fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides, whereas urban land exerted positive impacts on fluoroquinolones, β-lactam, and sulfonamides. Mariculture stands as a pivotal enterprise aimed at enhancing the quality of human existence. However, the utilization of antibiotics and pesticides in the mariculture process poses threats to both the environment and human well-being. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the occurrence, distribution and risk of antibiotics and pesticides in mariculture areas. In this study, 11 kinds of antibiotics and 12 kinds of pesticides were screened in four mariculture areas around Liaodong Peninsula in China. The pollution characteristics of pollutants were investigated in three different mariculture stages. The pollution in the reproduction stage was the most serious, indicating that mariculture may have a potential impact on the surrounding seawater. Freshwater aquaculture serves as a significant focal point for antibiotic contamination, yet understanding antibiotic distribution across different aquaculture models and stages remains limited. This study evaluated antibiotic pollution in three distinct freshwater aquaculture models: rice-crayfish coculture, fish aquaculture, and crab-crayfish aquaculture, during various aquaculture stages. Of the 33 target antibiotics, 16 antibiotics were detected, with the total concentrations ranging from 111.81 ng/L to 15,949.05 ng/L in water and 10.11 ng/g to 8986.30 ng/g in sediment. Among these antibiotics, erythromycin and lomefloxacin are prohibited for use in Chinese aquaculture. Dominant antibiotics in water included lincomycin, enrofloxacin, and enoxacin, whereas in sediment, oxytetracycline and erythromycin were predominant. Notably, lincomycin emerged as a dominant antibiotic in aquaculture for the first time. The concentrations of these dominant antibiotics were high compared to other aquaculture settings and exhibited elevated ecological risk. Critical periods for antibiotic contamination in water and sediment were found to be incongruent, occurring during the rainy season in July for water and the dry season in October for sediment. Notably, the rice-crayfish coculture model exerts a good effect in reducing antibiotic pollution. The extensive utilization of antibiotics has resulted in their frequent detection, contributing to an increased abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in rivers and posing a significant threat to environmental health. Particulate matter plays a crucial role as the primary carrier of various pollutants in river ecosystem. Its physicochemical properties and processes of sedimentation and re-suspension can influence the migration and transformation of antibiotics, yet the mechanisms of this impact remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the distribution characteristics at the micro-scale of particles in the upstream plain river network of the Taihu basin and the adsorption behaviors of antibiotics in particulate matter. The results revealed that particles were predominantly in the size range of 30 to 150 μm in the river network and highest total antibiotic concentrations in 0 to 10 μm particle size fractions. Adsorption experiments also confirmed that the smaller the suspended particle size, the stronger the adsorption capacity for antibiotics. Spatially, both the average particle size and total antibiotic concentrations were lower downstream than upstream. The distribution mechanism of antibiotic in river network sediments was significantly influenced by frequent resuspension and settling of fine particles with a stronger capacity to adsorb antibiotics under hydrodynamic conditions. This ultimately facilitated the release of antibiotics from sediment into the water, resulting in lower antibiotic concentrations in downstream sediments relative to upstream These findings suggest that fine particles serve as the primary carriers of antibiotics, and their sorting and transport processes can significantly influence the distribution of antibiotics in water-sediment systems. Seagrass meadows are one of the most important coastal ecosystems that provide essential ecological and economic services. The contamination levels of antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in coastal ecosystems are severely elevated owing to anthropogenic disturbances, such as terrestrial input, aquaculture effluent, and sewage discharge. However, few studies have focused on the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and their corresponding ARGs in this habitat. Thus, we investigated the antibiotic and ARGs profiles, microbial communities, and ARG-carrying host bacteria in typical seagrass meadow sediments collected from Swan Lake, Caofeidian shoal harbor, Qingdao Bay, and Sishili Bay in the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea. The total concentrations of 30 detected antibiotics ranged from 99.35 to 478.02 μg/kg, tetracyclines were more prevalent than other antibiotics. Metagenomic analyses showed that 342 ARG subtypes associated with 22 ARG types were identified in the seagrass meadow sediments. Multidrug resistance genes and RanA were the most dominant ARG types and subtypes, respectively. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that Halioglobus, Zeaxanthinibacter, and Aureitalea may be potential hosts at the genus level, and the relative abundances of these bacteria were higher in Sishili Bay than those in other areas. This study provided important insights into the pollution status of antibiotics and ARGs in typical seagrass meadow sediments. The consistent input of antibiotics into aquatic environments may pose risks to various creatures and ecosystems. However, risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments is frequently limited by the lack of toxicity data. To investigate the risk of commonly used antibiotics to various aquatic creatures, we focused on the distribution patterns and temporal dynamics of antibiotics in the coastal estuary area of China and performed a comprehensive ecological risk assessment for four antibiotics: erythromycin (ERY), tetracycline (TCN), norfloxacin (NOR) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). An interspecies correlation estimation (ICE)-species sensitivity distribution (SSD) combined model was applied to predict the toxicity data of untested aquatic species, and an accurate ecological risk assessment procedure was developed to evaluate the risk level of PPCPs. The results of risk quotient assessments and probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs) suggested that four objective antibiotics in the Chinese coastal estuary area were at a low risk level. These antibiotics posed a high risk in antibiotic-related global hot spots, with probabilistic risk values for ERY, NOR, SMX, and TCN of 81.33 %, 27.08 %, 21.13 %, and 15.44 %, respectively. The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soils has received extensive attention regarding its impacts on environmental, animal, and human systems under One Health. However, the health risks of soil ARGs and microbial determinants of soil resistomes remain poorly understood. Here, a nationwide metagenomic investigation of ARGs in cropland and forest soils in China was conducted. The findings indicated that the abundance and richness of high-risk (i.e., mobilizable, pathogen-carriable and clinically relevant) ARGs in cropland soils were 25.7 times and 8.4 times higher, respectively, compared to those identified in forest soils, suggesting the contribution of agricultural practices to the elevated risk level of soil resistomes. The biosynthetic potential of antibacterials best explained the total ARG abundance (Mantel's r = 0.52, p < 0.001) when compared with environmental variables and anthropogenic disturbance. Both microbial producers' self-resistance and antagonistic interactions contributed to the ARG abundance, of which self-resistance ARGs account for 14.1 %- 35.1 % in abundance. With the increased biosynthetic potential of antibacterials, the antagonistic interactions within the microbial community were greatly enhanced, leading to a significant increase in ARG abundance. Tetracyclines are widely used in Chinese apiculture. However, limited information is available on the presence of tetracycline residues in honey and the sources, degradation patterns, and associated health risks of these compounds. In this study, the presence of tetracyclines in honey samples across China was investigated over a four-year period. Additionally, the risks of dietary intake, as well as the sources and degradation patterns of tetracyclines in honey, were assessed. The three-dimensional spatial distributions (floral region, geographical region and entomological origin) of tetracyclines contamination varied significantly. Tetracycline residues in honey posed a moderate risk to children aged 3-10 years in Northwest China. Source analysis indicated that colony migration serves as the primary source of tetracyclines in honey. Based on the degradation patterns of tetracyclines in honey within colonies and during storage, oxytetracycline is more readily degraded than other tetracyclines. The main degradation products of tetracyclines are epimers and dehydration products, and the effects of these products on human health and the environment should be further evaluated in future studies. The abuse of antibiotics has caused the accumulation of antibiotic residues in environmental media, threatening the ecosystem and human health. Many studies on the distribution of aqueous antibiotics have been reported. However, the pollution status of antibiotics in the environment in Chinese herbal medicine planting areas is rarely comprehensively clarified, resulting in the lack of updated pollution data and conducive suggestions for ecological cultivation and sustainable development of Chinese herbal medicine. Thus, we comprehensively investigated the distribution, profiles, sources, and risks of the antibiotics in the surface water of an important tributary of the Huaihe River Basin, located in Bozhou City, a significant Chinese herbal medicine planting region. Solid-phase extraction coupled with an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (SPE-UPLC-MS) was utilized to detect the antibiotics in the water. 27 kinds of antibiotics were identified with total concentrations ranging from 75.01 to 1737.99 ng·L -1 , with doxycycline (DC) and doxycycline hydrochloride (DCH) possessed the highest concentration. And DC, DCH, oxilinic acid (OA), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), clarithromycin (CLA), and roxithromycinum (ROX) were the main antibiotics detected in this basin. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that animal husbandry was the primary source of antibiotics. Furthermore, the ecological risk assessment revealed that certain antibiotics could seriously threaten the survival of aquatic organisms, implying that local Chinese herbal medicines might be at similar growth risk. The drinking risk assessment showed that antibiotics in the water posed low risks for human, and children faced a greater drinking risk than adults. Background: Increasing studies linked outdoor air pollution (OAP), indoor environmental factors (IEFs), and antibiotics use (AU) with the first wave of allergies (i.e., asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema), yet the role of their exposures on children's second wave of allergy (i.e., food allergy) are unknown., Objectives: To investigate the association between exposure to OAP and IEFs and childhood doctor-diagnosed food allergy (DFA) during the pre-pregnancy, prenatal, early postnatal, and current periods, and to further explore the effect of OAP and IEFs on DFA in children co-exposed to antibiotics., Methods: A retrospective cohort study involving 8689 preschoolers was carried out in Changsha, China. Data on the health outcomes, antibiotic use, and home environment of each child were collected through a questionnaire. Temperature and air pollutants data were obtained from 8 and 10 monitoring stations in Changsha, respectively. Exposure levels to temperature and air pollutants at individual home addresses were calculated by the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method. Multiple logistic regression models were employed to assess the associations of childhood DFA with exposure to OAP, IEF, and AU., Results: Childhood ever doctor-diagnosed food allergy (DFA) was linked to postnatal PM 10 exposure with OR (95% CI) of 1.18 (1.03-1.36), especially for CO and O 3 exposure during the first year with ORs (95% CI) = 1.08 (1.00-1.16) and 1.07 (1.00-1.14), as well as SO 2 exposure during the previous year with OR (95% CI) of 1.13 (1.02-1.25). The role of postnatal air pollution is more important for the risk of egg, milk and other food allergies. Renovation-related IAP (new furniture) and dampness-related indoor allergens exposures throughout all time windows significantly increased the risk of childhood DFA, with ORs ranging from 1.23 (1.03-1.46) to 1.54 (1.29-1.83). Furthermore, smoke-related IAP (environmental tobacco smoke [ETS], parental and grandparental smoking) exposure during pregnancy, first year, and previous year was related to DFA. Additionally, exposure to pet-related indoor allergens (cats) during first year and total plant-related allergens (particularly nonflowering plants) during previous year were associated with DFA. Moreover, exposure to plant-related allergy during first and previous year was specifically associated with milk allergy, while keeping cats during first year increased the risk of fruits/vegetables allergy. C. perfringens type D strains are the leading cause of enterotoxaemia in ruminants such as goats, sheep, and cattle. However, there has been no prior research on the genomic characteristics of C. perfringens type D strains from various regions in China. Here, we investigated the antibiotic resistance, genomic characteristics, and phylogenetic relationship of C. perfringens type D isolates recovered from goat farms in Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia provinces. The antibiotic resistance test indicated that the isolates displayed high minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values to sulfafurazole, whereas the other antibiotics tested, such as penicillin, enrofloxacin, and florfenicol, worked well on them. Additionally, only tetracycline resistance genes [tetA(P) and tetB(P)] were identified from the isolates. A collective of 13 toxin genes, including etx and cpe were detected among the isolates. Sequence comparison revealed that the etx and cpe genes shared high sequence identities, and they could coexist on a pCW3-like plasmid, representing a potential risk to both animal breeding and public health. Phylogenetic analysis using core genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST) and core genome single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealed the close genetic relationship and potential regional/transregional transmission of the C. perfringens type D isolates in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Furthermore, pan-genomic analysis suggested the functional differences at the protein-coding gene level, although isolates from the same source shared a close genetic relationship. Listeria monocytogenes are considered to be the major foodborne pathogen worldwide. To understand the prevalence and potential risk of L. monocytogenes in retail foods, a total of 1243 retail foods in 12 food categories were sampled and screened for L. monocytogenes from 2020 to 2022 in Huzhou, China. A total of 46 out of 1234 samples were confirmed to be L. monocytogenes positive with a total rate of 3.7%. The contamination rate of seasoned raw meat (15.2%) was the highest, followed by raw poultry meat and raw livestock meat (9.9%) and salmon sashimi (9.5%). The L. monocytogenes isolates belonged to four serotypes, 1/2a,1/2b, 1/2c, and 4b, with the most prevalent serotype being 1/2a (47.9%). All isolates were grouped into 15 sequence types (STs) belonging to 14 clonal complexes (CCs) via multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The most prevalent ST was ST9/CC9 (23.9%), followed by ST3/CC3 (19.6%) and ST121/CC121 (17.4%). Notably, 11 STs were detected from ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, some of them have been verified to be strongly associated with clinical origin listeriosis cases, such as ST3, ST2, ST5, ST8, and ST87. Listeria pathogenicity islands 1 (LIPI-1) and LIPI-2 were detected in approximately all L. monocytogenes isolates, whereas the distribution of both LIPI-3 genes and LIPI-4 genes exhibited association with specific ST, with LIPI-3 in ST3 and ST288, and LIPI-4 in ST87. The strains carrying LIPI-3 and LIPI-4 virulence genes in this study were all isolated from RTE foods. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that >90% of isolates were susceptible to PEN, AMP, ERY, CIP, SXT, VAN, CHL, and GEN, indicating the antibiotic treatment might be still efficient for most of the L. monocytogenes strains. In this study, a systematic monitoring campaign of 30 antibiotics belonging to tetracyclines (TCs), macrolides (MLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs) and sulfonamides (SAs) was performed in the Xi'an section of the Wei River during three sampling events (December 2021, June 2022, and September 2022). The total concentrations of antibiotics in water ranged from 297 to 461 ng/L with high detection frequencies ranging from 45% to 100% for the various antibiotics. A marked seasonal variation in concentrations was found with total antibiotic concentrations in winter being 1.5 and 2 times higher than those in the summer and autumn seasons, respectively. The main contaminants in both winter and summer seasons were FQs, but in the autumn SAs were more abundant, suggesting different seasonal sources or more effective runoff for certain antibiotics during periods of rainfall. Combined analysis using redundancy and clustering analysis indicated that the distribution of antibiotics in the Wei River was affected by the confluence with dilution of tributaries and outlet of domestic sewage. Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) showed that most antibiotics in water samples posed insignificant risk to fish and green algae, as well as insignificant to low risk to Daphnia. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a significant pathogen responsible for severe multisite infections with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study analyzed carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) at a tertiary hospital in Shandong, China, using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). The objective was to explore the mechanisms and molecular characteristics of carbapenem resistance. A retrospective analysis of 91 isolates from January 2022 to March 2023 was performed, which included strain identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. WGS was utilized to determine the genome sequences of these CRPA strains, and the species were precisely identified using average nucleotide identification (ANI), with further analysis on multilocus sequence typing and strain relatedness. Some strains were found to carry the ampD and oprD genes, while only a few harbored carbapenemase genes or related genes. Notably, all strains possessed the mexA, mexE, and mexX genes. The major lineage identified was ST244, followed by ST235. The study revealed a diverse array of carbapenem resistance mechanisms among hospital isolates, differing from previous studies in mainland China. It highlighted that carbapenem resistance is not due to a single mechanism but rather a combination of enzyme-mediated resistance, AmpC overexpression, OprD dysfunction, and efflux pump overexpression. Infections significantly increase mortality in acute liver failure (ALF) patients, and there are no risk prediction models for early diagnosis and treatment of infections in ALF patients. This study aims to develop a risk prediction model for bacterial infections in ALF patients to guide rational antibiotic therapy. The data of ALF patients admitted to the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University in China from January 2017 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed for training and internal validation. Patients were selected according to the updated 2011 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases position paper on ALF. Serological indicators and model scores were collected within 24 h of admission. New models were developed using the multivariate logistic regression analysis. An optimal model was selected by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, Hosmer-Lemeshow test, the calibration curve, the Brier score, the bootstrap resampling, and the decision curve analysis. A nomogram was plotted to visualize the results. A total of 125 ALF patients were evaluated and 79 were included in the training set. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) were integrated into the new model as independent predictive factors. The new SOFA-based model outperformed other models with an area under the ROC curve of 0.799 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.652-0.926], the superior calibration and predictive performance in internal validation. High-risk individuals with a nomogram score ≥26 are recommended for antibiotic therapy. Bile acid homeostasis is critical to human health. Low-level exposure to antibiotics has been suggested to potentially disrupt bile acid homeostasis by affecting gut microbiota, but relevant data are still lacking in humans, especially for the level below human safety threshold. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 4247 Chinese adults by measuring 34 parent antibiotics and their metabolites from six common categories (i.e., tetracyclines, qinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, phenicols, and lincosamides) and ten representative bile acids in fasting morning urine using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Daily exposure dose of antibiotics was estimated from urinary concentrations of parent antibiotics and their metabolites. Urinary bile acids and their ratios were used to reflect bile acid homeostasis. The estimated daily exposure doses (EDED) of five antibiotic categories with a high detection frequency (i.e., tetracyclines, qinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, and phenicols) were significantly associated with urinary concentrations of bile acids and decreased bile acid ratios in all adults and the subset of 3898 adults with a cumulative ratio of antibiotic EDED to human safety threshold of less than one. Compared to a negative detection of antibiotics, the lowest EDED quartiles of five antibiotic categories and four individual antibiotics with a high detection frequency (i.e., ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, trimethoprim, and florfenicol) in the adults with a positive detection of antibiotics had a decrease of bile acid ratio between 6.6% and 76.6%. Except for macrolides (1.2×10 2 ng/kg/day), the medians of the lowest EDED quartile of antibiotic categories and individual antibiotics ranged from 0.32 ng/kg/day to 10 ng/kg/day, which were well below human safety thresholds. Objectives: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas putida (CRPP) has raised public awareness. This study investigated two strains from the Pseudomonas putida group that were resistant to carbapenem, tigecycline, and aztreonam-avibactam (ATM-AVI), with a focus on their microbial and genomic characteristics., Methods: We assessed the antibiotic resistance profile using broth dilution, disk diffusion, and E-test methods. Efflux pump phenotype testing and real-time quantitative PCR were employed to evaluate efflux pump activity in tigecycline resistance, while polymerase chain reaction was utilized to detect common carbapenem genes. Additionally, whole-genome sequencing was performed to analyze genomic characteristics. The transferability of bla IMP-1 and bla AFM-4 was assessed through a conjugation experiment. Furthermore, growth kinetics and biofilm formation were examined using growth curves and crystal violet staining., Results: Both strains demonstrated resistance to carbapenem, tigecycline, and ATM-AVI. Notably, NMP can restore sensitivity to tigecycline. Subsequent analysis revealed that they co-produced bla IMP-1 , bla AFM-4 , tmexCD-toprJ, and bla OXA-1041 , belonging to a novel sequence type ST268. Although they were closely related on the phylogenetic tree, they exhibited different levels of virulence. Genetic environment analysis indicated variations compared to prior studies, particularly regarding the bla IMP-1 and bla AFM-4 genes, which showed limited horizontal transferability. Moreover, it was observed that temperature exerted a specific influence on their biological factors., Conclusion: We initially identified two P. putida ST268 strains co-producing bla IMP-1 , bla AFM-4 , bla OXA-1041 , and tmexCD-toprJ. This study reports a comprehensive epidemiological and genetic analysis of V. cholerae strains, specifically non-O1/non-O139 serogroups, isolated from animal-derived food samples in Guangdong province from 2015 to 2019. A total of 21 V. cholerae strains were obtained, which exhibited high resistance rates for nalidixic acid (57.14 %, 12/21), ampicillin (33.33 %, 7/21), and ciprofloxacin (19.05 %, 4/21). The quinolone resistance-related gene, qnrVC, was prevalent in 80.95 % (17/21) of the isolates. Additionally, chromosomally mediated quinolone-resistance mutations, including mutations in GyrA at position 83 (S83I) and ParC at position 85 (S85L), were detected in 47.62 % of the isolates. The combination of target mutation and qnrVC genes was shown to mediate resistance or intermediate resistance to ciprofloxacin in V. cholerae. Furthermore, an IncC-type conjugative plasmid carrying thirteen antibiotic resistance genes, including genes conferring resistance to two clinically important antibiotics, cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones, was identified in the shrimp-derived strain Vc516. While none of our food isolates harbored the toxigenic CTX- and TCP-encoding genes, they did possess genes encoding toxins such as HlyA and Autoinducer-2. Notably, some V. cholerae strains from this study exhibited a close genetic relationship with clinical strains, suggesting their potential to cause human infections. Antibiotics can generally be detected in the water-sediment systems of lakes. However, research on the migration and transformation of antibiotics in water-sediment systems based on the influences of light and wind waves is minimal. To address this research gap, we investigated the specific impacts of light and wind waves on the migration and transformation of three antibiotics, norfloxacin (NOR), trimethoprim (TMP), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), under simulated light and wind waves disturbance conditions in a water-sediment system from Taihu Lake, China. In the overlying water, NOR was removed the fastest, followed by TMP and SMX. Compared to the no wind waves groups, the disturbance of big wind waves reduced the proportion of antibiotics in the overlying water. The contributions of light and wind waves to TMP and SMX degradation were greater than those of microbial degradation. However, the non-biological and biological contributions of NOR to degradation were almost equal. Wind waves had a significant impact on the microbial community changes in the sediment, especially in Methylophylaceae. Antibiotic residue stands as a significant ongoing environmental issue, with aquaculture being a major source of annual antibiotic discharge into the ocean. Nevertheless, there is still an incomplete evaluation of antibiotic residues in the Beibu Gulf, an area encompassed by two prominent aquaculture nations, China and Vietnam. The present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to examine the presence antibiotic residues in the Beibu Gulf based on published studies. Data were obtained through eight databases up to December 19th, 2023, and were updated on April 15th, 2024. The pooled concentration of antibiotic residues in seawater was 5.90 (ng/L), ranging from 5.73 to 6.06 (ng/L), and was 8.03 (ng/g), ranging from 7.77 to 8.28 (ng/g) in sediments. Fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides were identified as the main antibiotics found in both seawater and sediment samples. The Beibu Gulf showed higher antibiotic levels in its western and northeastern areas. Additionally, the nearshore mangrove areas displayed the highest prevalence of antibiotic residues. It is strongly advised to conduct regular long-term monitoring of antibiotic residues in the Beibu Gulf. Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most prevalent pathogens in bovine mastitis, which leads to substantial financial losses for the dairy industry., Results: In this study, S. aureus (n = 72) was isolated from 18 dairy farms in 15 provinces across China in 2021. The identification of these isolates at the species level was achieved by employing 16S rRNA sequencing. An isothermal amplification method for auxiliary detection of S. aureus was established, which can be employed not only for laboratory detection but also for point-of-care testing (POCT). Molecular characteristics of S. aureus mastitis in Chinese dairy cows were determined through MLST and spa typing. Finally, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and MRSA resistance genes were detected using MIC and PCR amplification techniques. 72 isolates were identified as 12 sequence types (STs) and 7 clonal complexes (CC). ST1/CC1 was the dominant prevalent accounting for 33.3 % of the total, and exhibiting a wide distribution range. In terms of spa types, t114 was the dominant type, accounting for 31.9 % of the total, followed by t529 as the second major type. Four S. aureus strains were classified as MRSA according to their levels of oxacillin resistance (MIC ≥4 μg/mL). Among these four MRSA strains, one of them was found to be mecA positive. Both cyanobacterial blooms and antibiotic resistance have aggravated worldwide and posed a great threat to public health in recent years. As a significant source and reservoir of water environmental resistome, cyanobacteria exhibit confusing discrepancy between their reduced susceptibility and their chronic exposure to antibiotic mixtures at sub-inhibitory concentrations. How the increasing temperature affects the adaptive evolution of cyanobacteria-associated antibiotic resistance in response to low-level antibiotic combinations under climate change remains unclear. Here we profiled the antibiotic interaction and collateral susceptibility networks among 33 commonly detected antibiotics in 600 cyanobacterial strains isolated from 50 sites across four eutrophicated lakes in China. Cyanobacteria-associated antibiotic resistance level was found positively correlated to antibiotic heterogeneity across all sites. Among 528 antibiotic combinations, antagonism was observed for 62 % interactions and highly conserved within cyanobacterial species. Collateral resistance was detected in 78.5 % of pairwise antibiotic interaction, leading to a widened or shifted upwards mutant selection window for increased opportunity of acquiring second-step mutations. We quantified the interactive promoting effect of collateral resistance and increasing temperature on the evolution of both phenotypic and genotypic cyanobacteria-associated resistance under chronic exposure to environmental level of antibiotic combinations. With temperature increasing from 16 °C to 36 °C, the evolvability index and genotypic resistance level increased by 1.25 - 2.5 folds and 3 - 295 folds in the collateral-resistance-informed lineages, respectively. Emergence of resistance mutation pioneered by tolerance, which was jointly driven by mutation rate and persister fraction, was found to be accelerated by increased temperature and antibiotic switching rate. In lake ecosystems, pelagic-benthic coupling strength (PBCS) is closely related to foodweb structure and pollutant transport. However, the trophic transfer of antibiotics in a benthic-pelagic coupling foodweb (BPCFW) and the manner in which PBCS influences the trophic magnification factor (TMFs) of antibiotics is still not well understood in the whole lake. Herein, the trophic transfer behavior of 12 quinolone antibiotics (QNs) in the BPCFW of Baiyangdian Lake were studied during the period of 2018-2019. It was revealed that 24 dominant species were contained in the BPCFW, and the trophic level was 0.42-2.94. Seven QNs were detected in organisms, the detection frequencies of ofloxacin (OFL), flumequine (FLU), norfloxacin (NOR), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were higher than other QNs. The ∑QN concentration in all species was 11.3-321 ng/g dw. The TMFs for ENR and NOR were trophic magnification, while for FLU/OFL it was trophic dilution. The PBCS showed spatial-temporal variation, with a range of 0.6977-0.7910. The TMFs of ENR, FLU, and OFL were significantly positively correlated with PBCS. Phytoplankton and macrophyte biomasses showed indirect impact on the TMFs of QNs by directly influencing the PBCS. With the rapid growth of aquaculture globally, large amounts of antibiotics have been used to treat aquatic disease, which may accelerate induction and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquaculture environments. Herein, metagenomic and 16S rRNA analyses were used to analyze the potentials and co-occurrence patterns of pathogenome (culturable and unculturable pathogens), antibiotic resistome (ARGs), and mobilome (mobile genetic elements (MGEs)) from mariculture waters near 5000 km coast of South China. Total 207 species of pathogens were identified, with only 10 culturable species. Furthermore, more pathogen species were detected in mariculture waters than those in coastal waters, and mariculture waters were prone to become reservoirs of unculturable pathogens. In addition, 913 subtypes of 21 ARG types were also identified, with multidrug resistance genes as the majority. MGEs including plasmids, integrons, transposons, and insertion sequences were abundantly present in mariculture waters. The co-occurrence network pattern between pathogenome, antibiotic resistome, and mobilome suggested that most of pathogens may be potential multidrug resistant hosts, possibly due to high frequency of horizontal gene transfer. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have resulted in the pollution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), posing threats to ecological security and human health. Thus, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the occurrence, removal efficiency, and ecological risk of antibiotics, along with the diversity, abundance, and co-occurrence of ARGs, and their correlations in 13 WWTPs along the Yangtze River Basin. Among 35 target antibiotics, 23 antibiotics within 6 categories were detected in all the samples. Amoxicillin (AMO), ofloxacin (OFL), and pefloxacin (PEF) were predominant in influents, while AMO exhibited dominance with the highest concentration of 1409 ng/L in effluents. Although antibiotic removal performance varied among different WWTPs, a significant decrease in each antibiotic category and overall antibiotics was observed in effluents compared with that in influents (p < 0.05). Remarkably, ecological risk assessment revealed high risks associated with AMO and ciprofloxacin (CIP) and medium risks linked to several antibiotics, notably including OFL, roxithromycin (ROX), clarithromycin (CLA), and tetracycline (TC). Furthermore, 96 ARG subtypes within 12 resistance types were detected in this study, and the total absolute abundance and diversity of ARGs were significantly decreased from influents to effluents (p < 0.05). Enrichment of 38 ARGs (e.g., bla NDM , ermA, vatA, mexA, and dfrA25) in effluents indicated potential health risks. Various mobile genetic elements (MGEs), exhibited significant correlations with a majority of ARGs in both influents and effluents, such as intⅠ1, tnpA1, tnpA5, and tp614, underscoring the important role of MGEs in contributing to the ARG dissemination. Many antibiotics displayed lower correlations with corresponding ARGs, but exhibited higher correlations with other ARGs, suggesting complex selective pressures influencing ARG propagation. Aims: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia (CRKP) is a global threat that varies by region. The global distribution, evolution, and clinical implications of the ST11 CRKP clone remain obscure., Methods: We conducted a multicenter molecular epidemiological survey using isolates obtained from 28 provinces and municipalities across China between 2011 and 2021. We integrated sequences from public databases and performed genetic epidemiology analysis of ST11 CRKP., Results: Among ST11 CRKP, KL64 serotypes exhibited considerable expansion, increasing from 1.54% to 46.08% between 2011 and 2021. Combining our data with public databases, the phylogenetic and phylogeography analyses indicated that ST11 CRKP appeared in the Americas in 1996 and spread worldwide, with key clones progressing from China's southeastern coast to the inland by 2010. Global phylogenetic analysis showed that ST11 KL64 CRKP has evolved to a virulent, resistant clade with notable regional spread. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis identified BMPPS (bmr3, mltC, pyrB, ppsC, and sdaC) as a key marker for this clade. In this study, the pollution status of antibiotics and ARGs in sediments from the land-sea intersection of Liaodong Bay was analyzed. The results showed that the level of antibiotic pollution ranged from ND to 433.27 ng/kg, with quinolones and tetracycline as the dominant antibiotics. The relative abundance of ARGs ranged from 3.62 × 10 -3 to 1.32 × 10 -1 copies/16SrRNA copies, with aminoglycoside and MLSB resistance genes being dominant. Regarding spatial distribution, the land and estuary areas showed higher antibiotic pollution levels than the offshore areas. Similarly, the land and estuary areas exhibited higher antibiotic diversity than the offshore areas. The ARGs were widely distributed on land, and their abundance gradually decreased to the downstream estuary area. Land and coastal areas exhibited higher ARG diversity than estuary areas. This paper retrospectively analysed the prevalence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) in some parts of China. Between January 2013 and December 2019, we collected 4,145 respiratory samples, including pharyngeal swabs and alveolar lavage fluid. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in Beijing, the highest resistance rate was 100% in Shanghai, and Gansu was the lowest with 20%. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in 2013, and the highest MRMP was 97.4% in 2019; the PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae for adults in Beijing was 17.9% and the MRMP was 10.48%. Among the children diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), the PCR-positive and macrolide-resistant rates of M. pneumoniae were both higher in the severe ones. A2063G in domain V of 23S rRNA was the major macrolide-resistant mutation, accounting for more than 90%. The MIC values of all MRMP to erythromycin and azithromycin were ≥ 64 μg/ml, and the MICs of tetracycline and levofloxacin were ≤ 0.5 μg/ml and ≤ 1 μg/ml, respectively. The macrolide resistance varied in different regions and years. Among inpatients, the macrolide-resistant rate was higher in severe pneumonia. A2063G was the common mutation, and we found no resistance to tetracycline and levofloxacin.

Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are primary sources of antibiotics in aquatic environments. However, limited research has been conducted on antibiotic attenuation in STPs and their downstream waters in low-urbanized areas. This study analyzed 15 antibiotics in the STP sewage and river water in the Zijiang River basin to quantify antibiotic transport and attenuation in the STPs and downstream. The results showed that 14 target antibiotics, except leucomycin, were detected in the STP sewage, dominated by amoxicillin (AMOX), ofloxacin, and roxithromycin. The total antibiotic concentration in the influent and effluent ranged from 158 to 1025 ng/L and 99.9 to 411 ng/L, respectively. The removal efficiency of total antibiotics ranged from 54.7 % to 75.7 % and was significantly correlated with total antibiotic concentration in the influent. The antibiotic emission from STPs into rivers was 78 kg/yr and 4.6 g/km 2 yr in the Zijiang River basin. The total antibiotic concentration downstream of the STP downstream was 23.6 to 213 ng/L and was significantly negatively correlated with the transport distance away from the STP outlets. Antibiotics may pose a high ecological risk to algae and low ecological risk to fish in the basin. The risk of AMOX and ciprofloxacin resistance for organisms in the basin was estimated to be moderate. The trees of the Dongzhai Harbor mangrove forest suffer from antibiotic contamination from surrounding aquaculture areas. Despite this being one of the largest mangrove forests in China, few studies have focused on the antibiotic pollution status in these aquaculture areas. In the present study, the occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of 37 antibiotics in surface water and sediment samples from aquaculture areas around Dongzhai Harbor mangrove forests were analyzed. The concentration of total antibiotics (∑antibiotics) ranged from 78.4 ng/L to 225.6 ng/L in surface water (except S14-A2) and from 19.5 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 229 ng/g dw in sediment. In the sediment, the concentrations of ∑antibiotics were relatively low (19.5-52.3 ng/g dw) at 75 % of the sampling sites, while they were high (95.7-229.0 ng/g dw) at a few sampling sites (S13-A1, S13D, S8D). The correlation analysis results showed that the K d values of the 9 antibiotics were significantly positively correlated with molecular weight (MW), K ow , and LogK ow . Risk assessment revealed that sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in surface water and SMX, enoxacin (ENX), ciprofloxacin (CFX), enrofloxacin (EFX), ofloxacin (OFX), and norfloxacin (NFX) in sediment had medium/high risk quotients (RQs) at 62.5 % and 25-100 %, respectively, of the sampling sites. The antibiotic mixture in surface water (0.06-3.36) and sediment (0.43-309) posed a high risk at 37.5 % and 66.7 %, respectively, of the sampling sites. SMX was selected as an indicator of antibiotic pollution in surface water to assist regulatory authorities in monitoring and managing antibiotic pollution in the aquaculture zone of Dongzhai Harbor. Antibiotics have been recognized as emerging pollutants due to their ecological and human health risks. This paper aims to enhance the ecological risk assessment (ERA) framework for antibiotics, to illustrate the distribution of these risks across different locations and seasons, and to identify the antibiotics that pose high ecological risk. This paper focuses on 52 antibiotics in seven major basins of China. Relying on the optimized approach of ERA and antibiotic monitoring data published from 2017 to 2021, the results of ERA are presented in multilevel. Across the study area, there are marked variations in the spatial distribution of antibiotics' ecological risks. The Huaihe River Basin, the Haihe River Basin, and the Liaohe River Basin are the top three in the ranking of present ecological risks. The research results also reveal significant differences in temporal variation, underscoring the need for increased attention during certain seasons. Ten antibiotics with high contribution rates to ecological risk are identified, which is an important reference to formulate an antibiotic control list. Antimicrobial resistance is considered to be one of the biggest public health problems, and airborne transmission is an important but under-appreciated pathway for the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Previous research has shown pharmaceutical factories to be a major source of ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in the surrounding receiving water and soil environments. Pharmaceutical factories are hotspots of antibiotic resistance, but the atmospheric transmission and its environmental risk remain more concerns. Here, we conducted a metagenomic investigation into the airborne microbiome and resistome in three pharmaceutical factories in China. Soil (average: 38.45%) and wastewater (average: 28.53%) were major contributors of airborne resistome. ARGs (vanR/vanS, bla OXA, and CfxA) conferring resistance to critically important clinically used antibiotics were identified in the air samples. The wastewater treatment area had significantly higher relative abundances of ARGs (average: 0.64 copies/16S rRNA). Approximately 28.2% of the detected airborne ARGs were found to be associated with plasmids, and this increased to about 50% in the wastewater treatment area. We have compiled a list of high-risk airborne ARGs found in pharmaceutical factories. Moreover, A total of 1,043 viral operational taxonomic units were identified and linked to 47 family-group taxa. Different CRISPR-Cas immune systems have been identified in bacterial hosts in response to phage infection. Similarly, higher phage abundance (average: 2451.70 PPM) was found in the air of the wastewater treatment area. Emerging pollutants are hazardous to the ecological environment and human health, and these issues have attracted increasing attention from scholars. In the current study, the Taiwan Strait is long and narrow, highly influenced by terrestrial domains, and frequently disturbed by human activities. Conversely, the Luzon Strait is an open sea far from the shore, and the impact of human activities on it is minimal. The description of antibiotics in two different types of seas revealed that contaminants were most commonly detected in both straits. In particular, the coasts of the Minjiang River, Jinjiang River, and Jiulong River were found to be pollution hotspots in the Taiwan Strait. The calculation of risk quotients revealed that antibiotics were more sensitive to algae. Antibiotics have garnered growing attention as pharmaceuticals ubiquitously present in human society. Within the soil environment, antibiotics exhibit a propensity for high environmental persistence, thereby posing a potential threat to the ecosystem. However, research on antibiotics in agricultural-pastoral ecotone soils is scarce. This study investigates the occurrence, distribution and risk of 11 common antibiotics in agricultural soils of the agro-pastoral transition zone in Horqin Left Middle Banner, eastern Inner Mongolia. The total concentration varies from not detectable to 609.62 μg/kg. Tetracyclines are the dominant antibiotic, with a higher detection frequency than Macrolides and Sulfonamides. The detection rates of the three types of antibiotics differ significantly. The study also finds that soil properties (organic matter content, pH, bulk density, clay, cation exchange capacity have no significant correlation with antibiotics in soil. Moreover, spatial regression analysis reveals that population density is the primary factor influencing the spatial distribution of antibiotics in soil. The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in different media have been widely reported; however, their occurrence in the environmental dimension of the Chinese urban agglomerations has received less attention, especially in bioaccumulation and health risks of antibiotics through the "One Health" lens. The review presents the current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, bioaccumulation, as well as health exposure risks in urban agglomerations through the "One Health" lens, and identifies current information gaps. The reviewed studies suggested antibiotic concentrations in water and soil were more sensitive to social indicators of urban agglomerations than those in sediment. The ecological risk and resistance risk of antibiotics in water were much higher than those of sediments, and the high-risk phenomenon occurred at a higher frequency in urban agglomerations. Erythromycin-H 2 O (ETM-H 2 O), amoxicillin (AMOX) and norfloxacin (NFC) were priority-controlled antibiotics in urban waters. Tetracyclines (TCs) posed medium to high risks to soil organisms in the soil of urban agglomerations. Health risk evaluation based on dietary intake showed that children had the highest dietary intake of antibiotics in urban agglomerations. The health risk of antibiotics was higher in children than in other age groups. The presence of antibiotics in environment is an emerging concern because of their ubiquitous occurrence, adverse eco-toxicological effects, and promotion of widespread antibiotic resistance. Urban soil, which plays a noticeable role in human health, may be a reservoir of antibiotics because of intensive human disturbance. However, little is understood about the vulnerability of soil to antibiotic contamination in urban areas and the spatial-temporal characteristics of anthropogenic and environmental pressures. In this study, we developed a framework for the dynamic assessment of soil vulnerability to antibiotic contamination in urban green spaces, combining antibiotic release, exposure, and consequence layers. According to the results, soil vulnerability risks shown obvious spatial-temporal variation in urban areas. Areas at a high risk of antibiotic contamination were usually found in urban centers with high population densities and in seasons with low temperature and vegetation coverage. Quinolones (e.g., ofloxacin and norfloxacin) were priority antibiotics that posed the highest vulnerability risks, followed by tetracyclines. We also confirmed the effectiveness of the vulnerability assessment by correlating soil vulnerability indexes and antibiotic residues in urban soils. Furthermore, urbanization- and land use-related parameters were shown to be critical in regulating soil vulnerability to antibiotic contamination based on sensitivity analysis. The wide use of animal manure in farmland operations is a source of soil nutrients. However, the return of manure affected antibiotics and microplastics in the soil, thus the potential ecological risks cannot be overlooked. This study investigated the distribution of different antibiotics and microplastics and their correlation. It was found that multiple classes of veterinary antibiotics and microplastics could be detected simultaneously in most manure and soil. In manure, the average concentration of tetracycline antibiotics was higher than fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides. A much lower concentration of antibiotics was found in the soil samples relative to manure. The abundance of microplastics ranged from 21,333 to 88,333 n/kg in manure, and the average abundance was 50,583 ± 24,318 n/kg. The average abundance was 3056 ± 1746 n/kg in the soil. It confirmed that applying organic fertilizer to agricultural soil and the application of plastic mulch in farmlands introduced microplastics. Moreover, microplastics were found to be significantly correlated with antibiotics (r = 0.698, p < 0.001). The correlation between microplastics and antibiotics in soil was significantly weaker than that in manure. Farms could be the hotspot for the co-spread of microplastics and antibiotics.
