RELIGIOUS leadership , *POLITICAL leadership , *PUBLIC spaces , *CONSERVATISM , *RELIGION & politics - Abstract
In this paper, we propose an ideal-typical distinction between conservatism and fundamentalism based on three criteria: 1) How do they relate to those who do not conform to their way of thinking; 2) How they relate to the public space, and 3) The type of political strategies they use. Based on this distinction, we analyze the possible relationship between new political and religious leaderships with populist discourses and the emergence of conservative groups in Latin America, in general, and in Mexico. This paper aims to analyze the issue of food security, articulating it with the relevance of achieving SDG 2, as one of the fundamental objectives set by the United Nations Organization for Sustainable Development (2015). To achieve this end, the research focuses on four fundamental aspects: 1. The relevance of food security in the global context and the need for timely access to food for individuals, without neglecting the asymmetric structural contexts on the planet, such as hunger and poverty, which limit the conditions for development (FAO, 2009). 2. The relevance of SDG 2 for food security, the production of goods and food effectively, preventing actions that threaten life on the planet (Cóndor et. al, 2022). 3. The presence of people who suffer from hunger in the Latin American and Caribbean region, which has been on the rise since the 2010s and which limits the possibilities of access to sustainability and better living conditions (ECLAC, 2019), a fact that has been intensified with the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic (FAO, 2021). 4. The COVID-19 pandemic that has given rise to new vulnerabilities and conditions for access to food, resulting, among other things, in the stunted growth of infants under five years of age. The method used is documentary review. It concludes on the relevance of food security for the achievement of sustainable development, for the reduction of poverty and structural asymmetric conditions, without failing to recognize the distance that exists to reach the fulfillment of these objectives, especially in convulsive scenarios such as those of the global South. FIRST-generation college students , *HIGHER education , *SCHOOL attendance , *EDUCATION policy , *COLLEGE students , *RESEARCH institutes , *SCHOLARLY periodicals , *STUDENTS - Abstract
First-generation students (FGS) have become a recent field of study as a result of the massification processes of higher education. The objective of this paper is to analyze Latin American articles on FGS published from 2002 to 2020, and indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, and SciELO; the research is centered on the dimensions/variables under study and the theoretical approaches and methodologies used. The results show that research on FGS in Latin America is in the incipient stage—produced primarily in the Southern Cone. It follows the theoretical patterns of the global north; in other words, the object of study is addressed through sociological or psychological theories that emphasize individual characteristics as a determining factor in academic persistence. Objective: This paper has the purpose to discuss how corporate networks’ big linkers constitute a development opportunity area in Latin America. Method: We employ a qualitative analysis that blends social networks literature and builds on interlocking directorates (IntDs) theory with a fascinating case study labeled the ‘Patient 31’ phenomenon that occurred during the coronavirus outbreak in South Korea. Main results: We generate managerial and conceptual insights on the diffusion processes of business practices, which have a series of profound implications for theory and practice on how corporate networks present differences in their diffusion ability. Relevance/Originality: Viral contagion processes are not a secret for health sciences, but they are still under researched in the context of managerial practices regarding diffusion processes. The COVID-19 virus has been (and is) a significant threat for global health since the beginning of 2020, as well as an operational challenge for almost every organization around the world. Theoretical/Methodological contributions: The results highlight the superspreaders’ high diffusion power, warn about the risks of including ‘Patient 31’- type of spreaders as members of the firms’ boards, and also provide recommendations on how policy makers could harness this diffusion ability over the organizational networks. PSYCHOTHERAPY , *ADVERSE childhood experiences , *POST-traumatic stress , *EVIDENCE-based psychotherapy , *ADOLESCENCE , *PILOT projects , *VIOLENCE , *DATABASE searching - Abstract
Introduction/Objective: As in the rest of the world, in Latin America there is a high prevalence of interpersonal violence (IV) in childhood and adolescence, which is associated with psychological consequences in the short, medium and long term. At the international level, progress has been made in the recognition of evidence-based psychotherapies, but the situation in Latin America is unknown. The objective of this systematic literature review is to identify which psychotherapy models or modalities have been shown to be effective in Latin America. Methods: A systematic search of five databases was carried out with search terms relating to psychosocial interventions of people exposed to IV during childhood, based in Latin America. Studies regarding Latino populations based in United States were excluded. Results: 14 papers describing 13 studies and one follow-up were identified. Individual and group interventions (mainly cognitive-behavioural and with psychodynamic influence) were included. Although all showed clinically or statistically significant changes in symptoms of post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression, most were pilot studies with important methodological limitations and a high risk of bias. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop clinical practice in Latin America with more robust research (i.e., controlled and randomised clinical trials) that produce more reliable evidence regarding the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for IV involving children and adolescents in the Latin American context. This paper aims to analyze the role of corruption in social instances in Latin America, its effects and the perception that public administration has among citizens. To achieve this end, the following aspects are addressed: 1. The conceptualization of corruption, as part of a systematic framework, which distorts the scope of the public and private spheres, as well as the political, economic and power spheres, serving as a incentive for the breakdown of democratic institutions. 2. The failures of the State when it comes to dealing with corruption, which has resulted in its institutionalization, having a notable impact on public opinion, expanding through the media, making this a precarious condition within political agendas Latin American. 3. The critical review from the philosophical and legal postulates, which guide the treatment of corruption from clear and precise sanctions, which tend to strengthen the public sphere, democracy and the institutionalization of the State. It concludes in the urgency of promoting State reforms, establishing appropriate laws and sanctions for corruption cases, which, consequently, leads to the strengthening of the social fabric and the recovery of the State's credibility by the citizens. How do algorithms shape the experience of facts? Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Limón, Costa Rica, this paper explores the role of algorithms in mediating three kinds of “factishes”: data truths, affective facts, and mystic revelations. The article unfolds as a series of stories that capture the interactions between Costa Ricans and the algorithms of social media platforms. To analyze these relationships, we develop a “ventriloquist” ethnographic approach that gives voice to algorithms by interpreting extant literature and the experiences of our interlocutors. We argue that algorithms enable individuals to navigate composite realities and assume multiple positions within them rather than merely conflating truth and fiction or strictly separating them.

Ethnic nationalism or ethnonationalism is a fundamental feature of the ideology of the Spanish political party Vox. This connects it with the political thought of the populist radical right (as defined by Mudde) within the wider far right family. First, this paper examines what ethnic nationalism or ethnonationalism means, in theoretical terms, before going on to analyse a peculiar feature that distinguishes Vox's nativism from other European radical right parties: "ethnic Hispanicism". Finally, it studies Vox's connections with Latin America, investigating the specific conceptualisation and strategic features of the project the Spanish party calls the "Iberosphere". CURRENCY substitution , *FINANCIALIZATION , *FINANCIAL markets , *DEBT , *GLOBALIZATION - Abstract
Financialization refers to the process by which financial markets, actors, instruments, and institutions gain importance in the functioning of economies and where the surplus generated is directed towards financial accumulation, which displaces productive accumulation (Epstein, 2005). However, this process is heterogeneous among regions and countries, and occurs in the periphery in the form of "subordinate financialization", since the dynamics of global accumulation condition its asymmetric and dependent insertion. This paper aims to examine a set of central aspects of the process of subordinate financialization of Latin American countries, which is manifested in the loss of sovereign monetary spaces, and which are linked to the process of dollarization of banking systems, the degree of indebtedness, and the internationalization of wealth. CULTURAL property , *HISTORIC buildings , *SUSTAINABLE development , *PRESERVATION of architecture , *CULTURAL identity , *AMERICAN identity , *GROUP identity , *VIOLENCE in the workplace - Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the theoretical-conceptual assumptions concerning cultural heritage and its link with Latin American cultural identity. To achieve this goal, we reflect on cultural heritage as a material, tangible and intangible asset of humanity, whose value is not obtained in a utilitarian way, but through its connection with the ancestral legacy and with social identification towards it. On the other hand, it points out the importance of the ownership and conservation of heritage buildings, which is why cultural management is essential, whose purpose is to summon the citizenry, the State and private entities to respect and value heritage, assuming a responsible, sustainable and sustained attitude towards emblematic historic buildings in Latin America, which have been victims of human intervention, violence, and various natural disasters. Finally, by understanding that adequate care and understanding of the historical, social and philosophical relevance of historical heritage buildings would improve not only the material conditions of the buildings, but also the citizen's conception of their identity and the role they play. as a mechanism of resistance to the changes sponsored by globalization. ENGLISH ABSTRACT In recent years, a phenomenon of companies with a prominent private valuation has emerged, which, given their rarity, are called unicorns. In the case of Latin America, although there is literature related to dynamic ventures, there is little research that has developed a study of unicorns for the region. This paper seeks, through the study of recent cases of unicorns in the region, to identify common characteristics. For this purpose, the 11 unicorns in force in Latin America between 2021 and the beginning of 2022 were considered as a sample, which were classified by category, business model, valuation, among other elements. The results suggest that among the distinctive characteristics of unicorn companies in the region, in general, they are formed by entrepreneurs with previous experience in business creation, with successes and failures as examples. In addition, these entrepreneurs have undergraduate studies in the region itself, and postgraduate degrees from prestigious universities outside the region. These businesses also have business models that rely on the use of cutting-edge technologies. Thus, the most repeated categories among Latin American unicorns are software services, fintech and e-commerce. In turn, their business models push them towards global markets. This paper hopes to contribute to the understanding of unicorns and the business trends that can have a greater impact on markets, in order to serve as a guide for potential public policies that encourage these initiatives.

Building on the literature on formal and informal institutions, this paper offers a typology of the role informal institutions play in the efficacy or inefficacy of formal institutions. Particularly, whether and why de jure and de facto independence converge or diverge. We distinguish four roles that informal institutions can play: competing, reinforcing, overlapping, and redundant. To illustrate our typology, we include examples of each role from Latin American countries. In Brazil we show that a norm of professionalism reinforces internal judicial independence, whereas in Mexico a norm of patronage competes with it. In Uruguay we show that a norm of legislative cooperation is redundant with a high level of de jure external judicial independence, whereas in Paraguay a norm of militant subordination overlaps with a low level of it. Objective/Context: This paper studies the role of the Chilean state during the great drought of 1967-1969 as a mediator between human beings and nature. Institutional adaptations and the effort to improve the infrastructure were elements of continuity with respect to previous droughts, but there were novelties as well, such as attempts to pursue weather modification and the artificial melting of glaciers. The support of technologies and scientists operating from peripheral state institutions was essential for these purposes. All the above took place in the context of the Cold War when the predominant environmental imaginaries made human intervention look favorable and necessary for the modernization of countries. Methodology: Diverse primary sources were used, such as ministerial documents, decrees, bulletins, and reports of different state institutions that allowed understanding the logic of state management during the water crisis. Similarly, research in national and international press helped identify how imaginaries about the environment were expressed and disseminated publicly, which tended to validate novel efforts to control nature. Originality: This is an original study for Latin America, which addresses the early appearance of science and technology in the efforts of what today would be known as geoengineering: mainly through the observation of new actors, which expanded the traditional forms of mediation between humans and nature, led by the state, concerning climate crises. Conclusions: In the 1960s, optimism grew for the human capacity to control and manipulate water resources by appealing to ways other than those previously known, associated with infrastructure development. Expert knowledge was placed at the service of peripheral institutions of the state to promote these changes with lasting consequences. The human desire to control nature at all costs was validated, which helps explain the temporal projection of experiments with artificial rain and glacier control to the present day in Chile. Over 5.4 million people have fled Venezuela in the last decade, with 4.6 million arriving in Latin American and Caribbean countries. Most are refugees seeking to settle in another of the region's countries, including Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. This paper focuses on the Venezuelan diaspora towards these countries and analyses whether these borders should be defined as open or closed, along with the forms of institutional incorporation or exclusion these people have experienced. To do this, it takes a case-by-case approach, reviewing legislation and analysing policy for each country. While Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay are all Mercosur members and signed the common residence agreement, which facilitated the movement of people, Paraguay has not created a special migration category for Venezuelan citizens, and has taken a more restrictive approach. This paper makes a comparative study of the socio-state capacities developed during the processes of institutionalising protected natural areas (PNA) in Latin America. It sets them within a framework of their interdependence with global governance processes and in relation to the role human rights have played for these purposes. Taking an approach that combines analysis of multilevel collective action with process monitoring, this work traces the trajectories of national and multilateral institutions; analyses the main dynamics that arise in the delimitation of the protection of natural areas in the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the region; and explores the possibilities for new agreements on the global agenda. SEMI-structured interviews , *SOVEREIGNTY , *SOCIAL groups , *DIGITAL libraries , *IDENTIFICATION - Abstract
This paper engages with the meanings and practices of digital sovereignty that four social collectives are building and enacting in Latin America. Through a qualitative methodological approach based on semi-structured interviews with founding members of the selected collectives, we sought to know how they conceive and carry out activities of digital sovereignty on a daily basis. Among the research findings, the identification of five articulating axes in the work of these organizations stands out, namely: 1) conception / proposal of particular digital sovereignty; 2.) ways to achieve/achieve digital sovereignty; 3.) criticism and resignification in the ways of making digital sovereignty; 4.) agents involved and 5.) relationship with other groups and/ or organizations interested in digital sovereignty. RETURNS to scale , *MIDDLE-income countries , *ECONOMIES of scale , *COMMERCIAL treaties , *MANUFACTURING processes , *DOMESTIC markets , *EXPORTS - Abstract
The success of some early Asian emerging countries such as Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, followed by China and India since 1980, has raised the bar for developing economies. However, other Asian emerging countries, like those from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and now Viet Nam, have not yet been able to replicate the performance of their Asian predecessors. Could it be that they are already experiencing the problems of a Latin American-style "middle-income trap"? In these two regions, the common factor has been the inability to "upgrade" their growth strategies when the existing ones have run their course and become counterproductive. The "middle-income trap" indicates that productivity growth is more difficult to sustain at higher and more complex stages of the catching-up process. While Latin American countries have exhausted their purely extractive development model (and productivity growth has stalled for decades), Southeast Asian ones have failed to recapture their pre-1997 high growth trajectories as they have been priced out of labor-intensive activities. This paper analyses how the "more of the same but hopefully better" supply-side-strategy that many mainstream economists and trade agreements focus on is the wrong solution for escaping the "trap"; instead, middle-income countries facing a slowdown in productivity growth should reengineer existing development strategies. Matching the performance of the above-mentioned countries requires a conscious, national-level strategy to promote investment in activities with higher long-term potentials for productivity growth, especially higher value-added manufactured exports. The main policy implication of this analysis is that Latin America must reignite productivity growth by adding value to their commodity exports and strengthening backward linkages of export products and services, while Southeast Asian countries should "deepen" their assembly operations in manufacturing. Nicholas Kaldor's argument that manufacturing has the greatest scope to realize increasing returns to scale remains true, even in today's decentralized, fragmented manufacturing systems, but the limited size of domestic markets means that middle-income countries must prioritize manufactured exports using all of the policy instruments still available to them. This article analyzes the behavior of the Economic Fitness indicator as a measure of the international competitiveness of Latin American economies, as well as an indicator of their relationship with per capita income gaps and the Human Development Index (HDI). Positive correlations were found between per capita income gaps and the stagnation of the international competitiveness of Latin American economies, as well as between human development levels and the productive structure, suggesting a causal relationship between human development and competitiveness. This paper also finds that the Economic Fitness indicator fluctuates significantly when estimated using exports in domestic value-added, suggesting that the original estimate may over- or underestimate competitiveness. RADIATION protection , *INFORMATION & communication technologies , *INFORMATION networks , *INFORMATION sharing , *INDUSTRIAL safety - Abstract
Taking into account that Latin America and the Caribbean countries have common interests in the practical application of the optimization principle and that the networks existing in other regions of the world were contributing to the improvement of occupational radiation protection infrastructures, the Network for the Optimization of Occupational Radiation Protection in Latin America and the Caribbean (REPROLAM) was created. In current international context, the increase of peer information exchange on topics dealing with safety and radiological protection using state-of-the-art information and communication technology has been promoted. In this scenario, the REPROLAM Website is developed as an information and communication tool in the field of occupational radiological protection and as a means of social appropriation of knowledge in this field, from which all countries in the region can benefit. In this paper the main characteristics and results of the created platform are shown. In a dynamic environment for the development of information technologies and networks, the existence of the REPROLAM Website has contributed to the network being able to meet its goals of grouping people whose professional activities are developed in the field of protection occupational radiological protection in Latin America and the Caribbean, contributing to the harmonization of policies and practices in this field, and to the integration and cooperation in relation to the knowledge and specialized services in occupational radiological protection available to the countries of the region. This paper examines the leadership approach to the pandemic in Latin America based on the traditional cultural approach to leadership in this region. Using the framework of challenges proposed by Grint (2020), a response to Covid is recommended based on its categorization as a wicked, as opposed to a tame or critical, problem. Using a framework of adaptive leadership (Heifetz, 1994) and advanced change theory (Quinn, 2000), Ricardo Semler's transformation of Semco is explored as an example of an alternative approach to leadership to address wicked problems in Latin America. BUSINESS cycles , *COVID-19 pandemic , *PRICES , *SOCIAL development , *SUSTAINABILITY , *STAGNATION (Economics) , *GROWTH rate - Abstract
This paper first analyzes the performance of Latin America during the long economic cycle that took place between 1998 and 2014, which combined the regional effects of the Asian crisis with a growth phase driven by a supercycle of commodity prices. However, the expansionary phase was followed by a five-year period of economic stagnation, during which previous achievements were weakened, even before the covid-19 crisis erupted, with its negative consequences. This confirms the persistence of the region's economic vulnerability to external shocks, as well as the difficulties in maintaining sustained growth rates associated with processes of structural change, which make it possible to reduce the gap in the development levels vis-à-vis the leading countries and face the challenges of environmental sustainability. It is also pointed out that, despite the important achievements in terms of social development during the recent growth cycle, the high structural inequalities that characterize the region were not broken.
