Background: Skin barrier function is significantly impacted by skin moisture. Most non-invasive evaluation techniques to measure skin surface hydration relying on its electrical properties, which are limited in scope and have unstable operations. Applying image processing for skin hydration assessment is uncommon, with an emphasis on skin-capacitive pictures and near-infrared images in general, which demand a certain spectrum. As a result, there is an increasing need for wide-area skin hydration evaluation and mapping., Objective: The study aims to propose a quantitative evaluation algorithm for skin surface hydration from visible-light images., Materials and Methods: Three devices were applied to measure skin hydration: skin image capture device and two recognized commercial skin devices. A digital image processing system creates a new index, called GVR, to symbolize skin surface moisture. The CLAHE algorithm was applied to enhance the contrast of skin image, and after calculating it with the monochrome image, the skin reflectance image was segmented. The GVR was estimated using the values of the individual sites and the entire skin. The correlation coefficient between the three methods was examined using statistical analysis to assess the performance of GVR., Results: Skin hydration estimated from visible-light images is influenced by the entire facial structure in addition to specific areas. The electrical and visible image evaluations showed a strong association with a significant difference., Conclusion: It was discovered that reflecting measures from visible images provide a quick and efficient way to quantify the moisture of the skin's surface., (© 2024 The Author(s). Digital pathology and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) models have revolutionized histopathology, opening new opportunities. With the increasing availability of whole-slide images (WSIs), demand is growing for efficient retrieval, processing, and analysis of relevant images from vast biomedical archives. However, processing WSIs presents challenges due to their large size and content complexity. Full computer digestion of WSIs is impractical, and processing all patches individually is prohibitively expensive. In this article, we propose an unsupervised patching algorithm, Sequential Patching Lattice for Image Classification and Enquiry (SPLICE). This novel approach condenses a histopathology WSI into a compact set of representative patches, forming a collage of WSI while minimizing redundancy. SPLICE prioritizes patch quality and uniqueness by sequentially analyzing a WSI and selecting nonredundant representative features. In search and match applications, SPLICE showed improved accuracy, reduced computation time, and storage requirements compared with existing state-of-the-art methods. As an unsupervised method, SPLICE effectively reduced storage requirements for representing tissue images by 50%. Nail fold capillaroscopy is an important means of monitoring human health. Panoramic nail fold images improve the efficiency and accuracy of examinations. However, the acquisition of panoramic nail fold images is seldom studied and the problem manifests of few matching feature points when image stitching is used for such images. Therefore, this paper presents a method for panoramic nail fold image stitching based on vascular contour enhancement, which first solves the problem of few matching feature points by pre-processing the image with contrast-constrained adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), bilateral filtering (BF), and sharpening algorithms. The panoramic images of the nail fold blood vessels are then successfully stitched using the fast robust feature (SURF), fast library of approximate nearest neighbors (FLANN) and random sample agreement (RANSAC) algorithms. UNet architecture has achieved great success in medical image segmentation applications. However, these models still encounter several challenges. One is the loss of pixel-level information caused by multiple down-sampling steps. Additionally, the addition or concatenation method used in the decoder can generate redundant information. These limitations affect the localization ability, weaken the complementarity of features at different levels and can lead to blurred boundaries. However, differential features can effectively compensate for these shortcomings and significantly enhance the performance of image segmentation. Therefore, we propose MGRAD-UNet (multi-gated reverse attention multi-scale differential UNet) based on UNet. We utilize the multi-scale differential decoder to generate abundant differential features at both the pixel level and structure level. These features which serve as gate signals, are transmitted to the gate controller and forwarded to the other differential decoder. In order to enhance the focus on important regions, another differential decoder is equipped with reverse attention. The features obtained by two differential decoders are differentiated for the second time. The resulting differential feature obtained is sent back to the controller as a control signal, then transmitted to the encoder for learning the differential feature by two differential decoders. The core design of MGRAD-UNet lies in extracting comprehensive and accurate features through caching overall differential features and multi-scale differential processing, enabling iterative learning from diverse information. The precise segmentation of white blood cells (WBCs) within blood smear images is a significant challenge with implications for both medical research and image processing. Of particular importance is the often neglected task of accurately segmenting WBC nuclei, an aspect that currently lacks dedicated methodologies. This paper introduces a straightforward and efficient method designed to fill this critical gap, providing an effective solution for the efficient segmentation of WBC nuclei. In blood smear imagery, the distinctive coloration of WBCs contrasts with the hues of other blood components. The inherent obscurity of WBCs prompts their segmentation by isolating pixels with minimal intensities. To streamline this process, our proposed method employs the Laplacian pyramid technique to decorrelate pixels in blood smear images, thereby amplifying the contrast. Subsequently, the intensities of pixels constituting blood cells, encompassing WBCs and the background, are modeled using three Gaussian random variables. Capitalizing on this feature, we implement the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) clustering method to determine the optimal threshold value, facilitating a highly precise segmentation of WBC nuclei. The proposed method demonstrates the capability to process images containing a single WBC as well as effectively functioning with images containing multiple cells of this type. Evaluation of the method on the ALL-IDB, ALL-IDB2, CellaVision, and JTSC datasets yielded accuracy values of 0.9802, 0.9725, 0.9772, and 0.9730, respectively. Comparative analysis with state-of-the-art methods revealed a notably comparable performance, underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The method presented in this article is highly competitive for segmenting the nuclei of WBCs compared to state-of-the-art methods. The three main advantages of our method are its ability to process images containing one or more WBCs, the automatic calculation of threshold values for each processed image, eliminating the need for manual parameter adjustments. Image content identification systems have many applications in industry and academia. In particular, a hash-based content identification system uses a robust image hashing function that computes a short binary identifier summarizing the perceptual content in a picture and is invariant against a set of expected manipulations while being capable of differentiating between different pictures. A common approach to designing these algorithms is crafting a processing pipeline by hand. Unfortunately, once the context changes, the researcher may need to define a new function to adapt. A deep hashing approach exploits the feature learning capabilities in deep networks to generate a feature vector that summarizes the perceptual content in the image, achieving outstanding performance for the image retrieval task, which requires measuring semantic and perceptual similarity between items. However, its application to robust content identification systems is an open area of opportunity. Also, image hashing functions are valuable tools for image authentication. However, to our knowledge, its application to content-preserving manipulation detection for image forensics tasks is still an open research area. In this work, we propose a deep hashing method exploiting the metric learning capabilities in contrastive self-supervised learning with a new modular loss function for robust image hashing. Moreover, we propose a novel approach for content-preserving manipulation detection for image forensics through a sensitivity component in our loss function. Breast cancer is a major health threat, with early detection crucial for improving cure and survival rates. Current systems rely on imaging technology, but digital pathology and computerized analysis can enhance accuracy, reduce false predictions, and improve medical care for breast cancer patients. The study explores the challenges in identifying benign and malignant breast cancer lesions using microscopic image datasets. It introduces a low-dimensional multiple-channel feature-based method for breast cancer microscopic image recognition, overcoming limitations in feature utilization and computational complexity. The method uses RGB channels for image processing and extracts features using level co-occurrence matrix, wavelet, Gabor, and histogram of oriented gradient. This approach aims to improve diagnostic efficiency and accuracy in breast cancer treatment. The core of our method is the SqE-DDConvNet algorithm, which utilizes a 3 × 1 convolution kernel, SqE-DenseNet module, bilinear interpolation, and global average pooling to enhance recognition accuracy and training efficiency. Additionally, we incorporate transfer learning with pre-trained models, including mVVGNet16, EfficientNetV2B3, ResNet101V2, and CN2XNet, preserving spatial information and achieving higher accuracy under varying magnification conditions. The method achieves higher accuracy compared to baseline models, including texture and deep semantic features. This deep learning-based methodology contributes to more accurate image classification and unique image recognition in breast cancer microscopic images. Multi-phase dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging image registration makes a substantial contribution to medical image analysis. However, existing methods (e.g., VoxelMorph, CycleMorph) often encounter the problem of image information misalignment in deformable registration tasks, posing challenges to the practical application. To address this issue, we propose a novel smooth image sampling method to align full organic information to realize detail-preserving image warping. In this paper, we clarify that the phenomenon about image information mismatch is attributed to imbalanced sampling. Then, a sampling frequency map constructed by sampling frequency estimators is utilized to instruct smooth sampling by reducing the spatial gradient and discrepancy between all-ones matrix and sampling frequency map. In addition, our estimator determines the sampling frequency of a grid voxel in the moving image by aggregating the sum of interpolation weights from warped non-grid sampling points in its vicinity and vectorially constructs sampling frequency map through projection and scatteration. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach through experiments on two in-house datasets. The results showcase that our method preserves nearly complete details with ideal registration accuracy compared with several state-of-the-art registration methods. Additionally, our method exhibits a statistically significant difference in the regularity of the registration field compared to other methods, at a significance level of p < 0.05. Objective: Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is a promising magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. CEST imaging usually requires a long scan time, and reducing acquisition time is highly desirable for clinical applications., Methods: A novel scan-specific unsupervised deep learning algorithm is proposed to accelerate steady-state pulsed CEST imaging with golden-angle stack-of-stars trajectory using hybrid-feature hash encoding implicit neural representation. Additionally, imaging quality is further improved by using the explicit prior knowledge of low rank and weighted joint sparsity in the spatial and Z-spectral domain of CEST data., Results: In the retrospective acceleration experiment, the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms (TDDIP, LRTES, kt-SLR, NeRP, CRNN, and PBCS) for the in vivo human brain dataset under various acceleration rates. In the prospective acceleration experiment, the proposed algorithm can still obtain results close to the fully-sampled images., Conclusion and Significance: The hybrid-feature hash encoding implicit neural representation combined with explicit sparse prior (INRESP) can efficiently accelerate CEST imaging. The proposed algorithm achieves reduced error and improved image quality compared to several state-of-the-art algorithms at relatively high acceleration factors. The superior performance and the training database-free characteristic make the proposed algorithm promising for accelerating CEST imaging in various applications.

Purpose: In this work, the use of joint Total Generalized Variation (TGV) regularization to improve Multipool-Lorentzian fitting of chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) Spectra in terms of stability and parameter signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was investigated., Theory and Methods: The joint TGV term was integrated into the nonlinear parameter fitting problem. To increase convergence and weight the gradients, preconditioning using a voxel-wise singular value decomposition was applied to the problem, which was then solved using the iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method combined with a Primal-Dual splitting algorithm. The TGV method was evaluated on simulated numerical phantoms, 3T phantom data and 7T in vivo data with respect to systematic errors and robustness. Three reference methods were also implemented: The standard nonlinear fitting, a method using a nonlocal-means filter for denoising and the pyramid scheme, which uses downsampled images to acquire accurate start values., Results: The proposed regularized fitting method showed significantly improved robustness (compared to the reference methods). In testing, over a range of SNR values the TGV fit outperformed the other methods and showed accurate results even for large amounts of added noise. Parameter values found were closer or comparable to the ground truth. For in vivo datasets, the added regularization increased the parameter map SNR and prevented instabilities., Conclusion: The proposed fitting method using TGV regularization leads to improved results over a range of different data-sets and noise levels. Background and Objective: Coronary artery segmentation is a pivotal field that has received increasing attention in recent years. However, this task remains challenging because of the inhomogeneous distributions of the contrast agent and dim light, resulting in noise, vascular breakages and small vessel losses in the obtained segmentation results., Methods: To acquire better automatic blood vessel segmentation results for coronary angiography images, a UNet-based segmentation network (SARC-UNet) is constructed for coronary artery segmentation; this approach is based on residual convolution and spatial attention. First, we use the low-light image enhancement (LIME) approach to increase the contrast and clarity levels of coronary angiography images. Then, we design two residual convolution fusion modules (RCFM1 and RCFM2) that can successfully fuse the local and global information of coronary images while also capturing the characteristics of finer-grained blood vessels, hence preventing the loss of tiny blood vessels in the segmentation findings. Finally, using a cascaded waterfall structure, we create a new location-enhanced spatial attention (LESA) mechanism that can efficiently improve the long-distance dependencies between coronary vascular pixel features, eradicating vascular ruptures and noise in the segmentation results., Results: This article subjectively and objectively evaluates the experimental results. This method has performed well on five general indicators. Furthermore, it outperforms the connectivity indicators proposed in this article. Purpose: To develop neural network (NN)-based quantitative MRI parameter estimators with minimal bias and a variance close to the Cramér-Rao bound., Theory and Methods: We generalize the mean squared error loss to control the bias and variance of the NN's estimates, which involves averaging over multiple noise realizations of the same measurements during training. Bias and variance properties of the resulting NNs are studied for two neuroimaging applications., Results: In simulations, the proposed strategy reduces the estimates' bias throughout parameter space and achieves a variance close to the Cramér-Rao bound. Purpose: To develop a new sequence to simultaneously acquire Cartesian sodium ( 23 Na) MRI and accelerated Cartesian single (SQ) and triple quantum (TQ) sodium MRI of in vivo human brain at 7 T by leveraging two dedicated low-rank reconstruction frameworks., Theory and Methods: The Double Half-Echo technique enables short echo time Cartesian 23 Na MRI and acquires two k-space halves, reconstructed by a low-rank coupling constraint. Additionally, three-dimensional (3D) 23 Na Multi-Quantum Coherences (MQC) MRI requires multi-echo sampling paired with phase-cycling, exhibiting a redundant multidimensional space. Simultaneous Autocalibrating and k-Space Estimation (SAKE) were used to reconstruct highly undersampled 23 Na MQC MRI. Reconstruction performance was assessed against five-dimensional (5D) CS, evaluating structural similarity index (SSIM), root mean squared error (RMSE), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and quantification of tissue sodium concentration and TQ/SQ ratio in silico, in vitro, and in vivo., Results: The proposed sequence enabled the simultaneous acquisition of fully sampled 23 Na MRI while leveraging prospective undersampling for 23 Na MQC MRI. SAKE improved TQ image reconstruction regarding SSIM by 6% and reduced RMSE by 35% compared to 5D CS in vivo. Thanks to prospective undersampling, the spatial resolution of 23 Na MQC MRI was enhanced from 8 × 8 × 15 $$ 8\times 8\times 15 $$ mm 3 to 8 × 8 × 8 $$ 8\times 8\times 8 $$ mm 3 while reducing acquisition time from 2 × 31 $$ 2\times 31 $$ min to 2 × 23 $$ 2\times 23 $$ min., Conclusion: The proposed sequence, coupled with low-rank reconstructions, provides an efficient framework for comprehensive whole-brain sodium MRI, combining TSC, T2*, and TQ/SQ ratio estimations. Model quantization is a promising technique that can simultaneously compress and accelerate a deep neural network by limiting its computation bit-width, which plays a crucial role in the fast-growing AI industry. Despite model quantization's success in producing well-performing low-bit models, the quantization process itself can still be expensive, which may involve a long fine-tuning stage on a large, well-annotated training set. To make the quantization process more efficient in terms of both time and data requirements, this paper proposes a fast and accurate post-training quantization method, namely EfficientQ. We develop this new method with a layer-wise optimization strategy and leverage the powerful alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to ensure fast convergence. Furthermore, a weight regularization scheme is incorporated to provide more guidance for the optimization of the discrete weights, and a self-adaptive attention mechanism is proposed to combat the class imbalance problem. Extensive comparison and ablation experiments are conducted on two publicly available medical image segmentation datasets, i.e., LiTS and BraTS2020, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over various existing post-training quantization methods in terms of both accuracy and optimization speed. Remarkably, with EfficientQ, the quantization of a practical 3D UNet only requires less than 5 min on a single GPU and one data sample. Background and Objective: As a widely used technique for Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) acceleration, compressed sensing MRI involves two main issues: designing an effective sampling strategy and reconstructing the image from significantly under-sampled K-space data. In this paper, an innovative approach is proposed to address these two challenges simultaneously., Methods: A novel MRI reconstruction method, termed as LUCMT, is implemented by integrating a learnable under-sampling strategy with a reconstruction network based on the Cross Multi-head Attention Transformer. In contrast to conventional static sampling methods, the proposed adaptive sampling scheme is processed optimally by learning the optimal sampling technique, which involves binarizing the sampling pattern by a sigmoid function and computing gradients by backpropagation. And the reconstruction network is designed by using CS-MRI depth unfolding network that incorporates a Cross Multi-head Attention (CMA) module with inertial and gradient descent terms., Results: T1 brain MR images from the FastMRI dataset are used to validate the performance of the proposed method. A series of experiments are conducted to validate the superior performance of our proposed network in terms of quantitative metrics and visual quality. Compared with other state-of-the-art reconstruction methods, LUCMT achieves better reconstruction performances with more accurate details. Stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) is extensively utilized in the fields of cell and molecular biology as a super-resolution imaging technique for visualizing cells and molecules. Nonetheless, the imaging process of STORM is frequently susceptible to noise, which can significantly impact the subsequent image analysis. Moreover, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive automated processing approach for analyzing protein aggregation states from a large number of STORM images. This paper initially applies our previously proposed denoising algorithm, UNet-Att, in STORM image denoising. This algorithm was constructed based on attention mechanism and multi-scale features, showcasing a remarkably efficient performance in denoising. Subsequently, we propose a collection of automated image processing algorithms for the ultimate feature extractions and data analyses of the STORM images. The information extraction workflow effectively integrates automated methods of image denoising, objective image segmentation and binarization, and object information extraction, and a novel image information clustering algorithm specifically developed for the morphological analysis of the objects in the STORM images. Image stitching is a traditional but challenging computer vision task. The goal is to stitch together multiple images with overlapping areas into a single, natural-looking, high-resolution image without ghosts or seams. This article aims to increase the field of view of gastroenteroscopy and reduce the missed detection rate. To this end, an improved depth framework based on unsupervised panoramic image stitching of the gastrointestinal tract is proposed. In addition, preprocessing for aberration correction of monocular endoscope images is introduced, and a C2f module is added to the image reconstruction network to improve the network's ability to extract features. A comprehensive real image data set, GASE-Dataset, is proposed to establish an evaluation benchmark and training learning framework for unsupervised deep gastrointestinal image splicing. Experimental results show that the MSE, RMSE, PSNR, SSIM and RMSE&#95;SW indicators are improved, while the splicing time remains within an acceptable range. Compared with traditional image stitching methods, the performance of this method is enhanced. In addition, improvements are proposed to address the problems of lack of annotated data, insufficient generalization ability and insufficient comprehensive performance in image stitching schemes based on supervised learning. Echocardiography is one the most commonly used imaging modalities for the diagnosis of congenital heart disease. Echocardiographic image analysis is crucial to obtaining accurate cardiac anatomy information. Semantic segmentation models can be used to precisely delimit the borders of the left ventricle, and allow an accurate and automatic identification of the region of interest, which can be extremely useful for cardiologists. In the field of computer vision, convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures remain dominant. Existing CNN approaches have proved highly efficient for the segmentation of various medical images over the past decade. However, these solutions usually struggle to capture long-range dependencies, especially when it comes to images with objects of different scales and complex structures. In this study, we present an efficient method for semantic segmentation of echocardiographic images that overcomes these challenges by leveraging the self-attention mechanism of the Transformer architecture. The proposed solution extracts long-range dependencies and efficiently processes objects at different scales, improving performance in a variety of tasks. We introduce Shifted Windows Transformer models (Swin Transformers), which encode both the content of anatomical structures and the relationship between them. Our solution combines the Swin Transformer and U-Net architectures, producing a U-shaped variant. The validation of the proposed method is performed with the EchoNet-Dynamic dataset used to train our model. The results show an accuracy of 0.97, a Dice coefficient of 0.87, and an Intersection over union (IoU) of 0.78. Swin Transformer models are promising for semantically segmenting echocardiographic images and may help assist cardiologists in automatically analyzing and measuring complex echocardiographic images., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Objective . Cone beam CT (CBCT) typically has severe image artifacts and inaccurate HU values, which limits its application in radiation medicines. Scholars have proposed the use of cycle consistent generative adversarial network (Cycle-GAN) to address these issues. However, the generation quality of Cycle-GAN needs to be improved. This issue is exacerbated by the inherent size discrepancies between pelvic CT scans from different patients, as well as varying slice positions within the same patient, which introduce a scaling problem during training. Approach . We introduced the Enhanced Edge and Mask (EEM) approach in our structural constraint Cycle-EEM-GAN. This approach is designed to not only solve the scaling problem but also significantly improve the generation quality of the synthetic CT images. Then data from sixty pelvic patients were used to investigate the generation of synthetic CT (sCT) from CBCT. Main results. The mean absolute error (MAE), the root mean square error (RMSE), the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), the structural similarity index (SSIM), and spatial nonuniformity (SNU) are used to assess the quality of the sCT generated from CBCT. Compared with CBCT images, the MAE improved from 53.09 to 37.74, RMSE from 185.22 to 146.63, SNU from 0.38 to 0.35, PSNR from 24.68 to 32.33, SSIM from 0.624 to 0.981. Also, the Cycle-EEM-GAN outperformed Cycle-GAN in terms of visual evaluation and loss. Significance. In the field of image processing, common noise types include Gaussian noise, salt and pepper noise, speckle noise, uniform noise and pulse noise. Different types of noise require different denoising algorithms and techniques to maintain image quality and fidelity. Traditional image denoising methods not only remove image noise, but also result in the detail loss in the image. It cannot guarantee the clean removal of noise information while preserving the true signal of the image. To address the aforementioned issues, an image denoising method combining an improved threshold function and wavelet transform is proposed in the experiment. Unlike traditional threshold functions, the improved threshold function is a continuous function that can avoid the pseudo Gibbs effect after image denoising and improve image quality. During the process, the output image of the finite ridge wave transform is first combined with the wavelet transform to improve the denoising performance. Then, an improved threshold function is introduced to enhance the quality of the reconstructed image. In addition, to evaluate the performance of different algorithms, different densities of Gaussian noise are added to Lena images of black, white, and color in the experiment. The results showed that when adding 0.010.01 variance Gaussian noise to black and white images, the peak signal-to-noise ratio of the research method increased by 2.58dB in a positive direction. The mean square error decreased by 0.10dB. When using the algorithm for denoising, the research method had a minimum denoising time of only 13ms, which saved 9ms and 3ms compared to the hard threshold algorithm (Hard TA) and soft threshold algorithm (Soft TA), respectively. The research method exhibited higher stability, with an average similarity error fluctuating within 0.89%. The above results indicate that the research method has smaller errors and better system stability in image denoising. This study improves the Logistic chaotic system and combines it with the hyperchaotic Chen system to create a dual chaotic system. The algorithm encrypts images in three stages. In the first stage, a plaintext-related key generation scheme is designed to generate the parameters and initial values of the dual chaotic system. In the second stage, the chaotic sequences generated by the dual chaotic system are used for dynamic DNA encoding and computation. In the third stage, the chaotic sequences generated by the improved Logistic chaotic system are used to perform row-column permutations, completing the scrambling. The security analysis of the encrypted images shows that the algorithm described in this paper is robust and secure, capable of resisting most known attacks. Objective: The three steps of brain image processing - preprocessing, segmentation, and classification are becoming increasingly important in patient care. The aim of this article is to present a proposed method in the mentioned three-steps, with emphasis on the preprocessing step, which includes noise removal and contrast enhancement. Methods: The fast and adaptive bidimensional empirical mode decomposition and the anisotropic diffusion equation as well as the modified combination of top-hat and bottom-hat transforms are used for noise reduction and contrast enhancement. Fast C-means clustering with enhanced image is used to detect tumors and the tumor cluster corresponds to the maximum centroid. Finally, Ensemble learning is used for classification. Result: The Figshare brain tumor dataset contains magnetic resonance images used for data selection. The optimal parameters for both noise reduction and contrast enhancement are investigated using a tumor contaminated with Gaussian noise. The results are evaluated against state-of-the-art results and qualitative performance metrics to demonstrate the dominance of the proposed approach. The fast C-means algorithm is applied to detect tumors using twelve enhanced images. The detected tumors were compared to the ground truth and showed an accuracy and specificity of 99% each, and a sensitivity and precision of 90% each. Six statistical features are retrieved from 150 enhanced images using wavelet packet coefficients at level 4 of the Daubechies 4 wavelet function. These features are used to develop the classifier model using ensemble learning to create a model with training and testing accuracy of 96.7% and 76.7%, respectively. When this model is applied to classify twelve detected tumor images, the accuracy is 75%; there are three misclassified images, all of which belong to the pituitary disease group. Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is widely applied for the diagnosis of coronary artery diseases. Low-dose (LD) SPECT aims to minimize radiation exposure but leads to increased image noise. Limited-view (LV) SPECT, such as the latest GE MyoSPECT ES system, enables accelerated scanning and reduces hardware expenses but degrades reconstruction accuracy. Additionally, Computed Tomography (CT) is commonly used to derive attenuation maps ( μ -maps) for attenuation correction (AC) of cardiac SPECT, but it will introduce additional radiation exposure and SPECT-CT misalignments. Although various methods have been developed to solely focus on LD denoising, LV reconstruction, or CT-free AC in SPECT, the solution for simultaneously addressing these tasks remains challenging and under-explored. Furthermore, it is essential to explore the potential of fusing cross-domain and cross-modality information across these interrelated tasks to further enhance the accuracy of each task. Thus, we propose a Dual-Domain Coarse-to-Fine Progressive Network (DuDoCFNet), a multi-task learning method for simultaneous LD denoising, LV reconstruction, and CT-free μ -map generation of cardiac SPECT. Paired dual-domain networks in DuDoCFNet are cascaded using a multi-layer fusion mechanism for cross-domain and cross-modality feature fusion. Two-stage progressive learning strategies are applied in both projection and image domains to achieve coarse-to-fine estimations of SPECT projections and CT-derived μ -maps. Our experiments demonstrate DuDoCFNet's superior accuracy in estimating projections, generating μ -maps, and AC reconstructions compared to existing single- or multi-task learning methods, under various iterations and LD levels. Intelligent systems in interventional healthcare depend on the reliable perception of the environment. In this context, photoacoustic tomography (PAT) has emerged as a non-invasive, functional imaging modality with great clinical potential. Current research focuses on converting the high-dimensional, not human-interpretable spectral data into the underlying functional information, specifically the blood oxygenation. One of the largely unexplored issues stalling clinical advances is the fact that the quantification problem is ambiguous, i.e. that radically different tissue parameter configurations could lead to almost identical photoacoustic spectra. In the present work, we tackle this problem with conditional Invertible Neural Networks (cINNs). Going beyond traditional point estimates, our network is used to compute an approximation of the conditional posterior density of tissue parameters given the photoacoustic spectrum. To this end, an automatic mode detection algorithm extracts the plausible solution from the sample-based posterior. According to a comprehensive validation study based on both synthetic and real images, our approach is well-suited for exploring ambiguity in quantitative PAT.

Purpose: The performance of modern image reconstruction methods is commonly judged using quantitative error metrics like root mean squared-error and the structural similarity index, which are calculated by comparing reconstructed images against fully sampled reference data. In practice, the reference data will contain noise and is not a true gold standard. In this work, we demonstrate that the "hidden noise" present in reference data can substantially confound standard approaches for ranking different image reconstruction results., Methods: Using both experimental and simulated k-space data and several different image reconstruction techniques, we examined whether there was correlation between performance metrics obtained with typical noisy reference data versus those obtained with higher-quality reference data., Results: For conventional performance metrics, the reconstructions that matched best with the higher-quality reference data were substantially different from the reconstructions that matched best with typical noisy reference data. This leads to suboptimal reconstruction results if the performance with respect to noisy reference data is used to select which reconstruction methods/parameters to employ. These issues were reduced when employing alternative error metrics that better account for noise., Conclusion: Reference data containing hidden noise can substantially mislead the ranking of image reconstruction methods when using conventional error metrics, but this issue can be mitigated with alternative error metrics., (© 2024 The Authors. Source-free domain adaptation (SFDA) aims to adapt models trained on a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain without access to source data. In medical imaging scenarios, the practical significance of SFDA methods has been emphasized due to data heterogeneity and privacy concerns. Recent state-of-the-art SFDA methods primarily rely on self-training based on pseudo-labels (PLs). Unfortunately, the accuracy of PLs may deteriorate due to domain shift, thus limiting the effectiveness of the adaptation process. To address this issue, we propose a Chebyshev confidence guided SFDA framework to accurately assess the reliability of PLs and generate self-improving PLs for self-training. The Chebyshev confidence is estimated by calculating the probability lower bound of PL confidence, given the prediction and the corresponding uncertainty. Leveraging the Chebyshev confidence, we introduce two confidence-guided denoising methods: direct denoising and prototypical denoising. Additionally, we propose a novel teacher-student joint training scheme (TJTS) that incorporates a confidence weighting module to iteratively improve PLs' accuracy. The TJTS, in collaboration with the denoising methods, effectively prevents the propagation of noise and enhances the accuracy of PLs. Extensive experiments in diverse domain scenarios validate the effectiveness of our proposed framework and establish its superiority over state-of-the-art SFDA methods. Our paper contributes to the field of SFDA by providing a novel approach for precisely estimating the reliability of PLs and a framework for obtaining high-quality PLs, resulting in improved adaptation performance.

Deep cascaded networks have been extensively studied and applied to accelerate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and have shown promising results. Most existing works employ a large cascading number for the sake of superior performances. However, due to the lack of proper guidance, the reconstruction performance can easily reach a plateau and even face degradation if simply increasing the cascading number. In this paper, we aim to boost the reconstruction performance from a novel perspective by proposing a parallel architecture called DIRECTION that fully exploits the guiding value of the reconstruction residual of each subnetwork. Specifically, we introduce a novel Reconstruction Residual-Based Feature Modulation Mechanism (RRFMM) which utilizes the reconstruction residual of the previous subnetwork to guide the next subnetwork at the feature level. To achieve this, a Residual Attention Modulation Block (RAMB) is proposed to generate attention maps using multi-scale residual features to modulate the image features of the corresponding scales. Equipped with this strategy, each subnetwork within the cascaded network possesses its unique optimization objective and emphasis rather than blindly updating its parameters. To further boost the performance, we introduce the Cross-Stage Feature Reuse Connection (CSFRC) and the Reconstruction Dense Connection (RDC), which can reduce information loss and enhance representative ability. We conduct sufficient experiments and evaluate our method on the fastMRI knee dataset using multiple subsampling masks. Comprehensive experimental results show that our method can markedly boost the performance of cascaded networks and significantly outperforms other compared state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively., (Copyright © 2024. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) super-resolution (SR) reconstruction technology can enhance the resolution and quality of CMRI, providing experts with clearer and more accurate information about cardiac structure and function. This technology aids in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities and the development of personalized treatment plans. In the processing of CMRI, existing bicubic degradation-based SR methods often suffer from performance degradation, resulting in blurred SR images. To address the aforementioned problem, we present a parallel alternating iterative optimization for CMRI image blind SR method (PAIBSR). Specifically, we propose a parallel alternating iterative optimization strategy, which employs dynamically corrected blur kernels and dynamically extracted intermediate low-resolution features as prior knowledge for both the blind SR process and the blur kernel correction process. Meanwhile, we propose a blur kernel update module composed of a blur kernel extractor and a low-resolution kernel extractor to correct the blur kernel. Furthermore, we propose an enhanced spatial feature transformation residual block, leveraging the corrected blur kernel as prior knowledge for the blind SR process. Through extensive experiments conducted on synthetic datasets, we have validated the superiority of PAIBSR method. It outperforms state-of-the-art SR methods in terms of performance and produces visually pleasing results.

Purpose: We present SCAMPI (Sparsity Constrained Application of deep Magnetic resonance Priors for Image reconstruction), an untrained deep Neural Network for MRI reconstruction without previous training on datasets. It expands the Deep Image Prior approach with a multidomain, sparsity-enforcing loss function to achieve higher image quality at a faster convergence speed than previously reported methods., Methods: Two-dimensional MRI data from the FastMRI dataset with Cartesian undersampling in phase-encoding direction were reconstructed for different acceleration rates for single coil and multicoil data., Results: The performance of our architecture was compared to state-of-the-art Compressed Sensing methods and ConvDecoder, another untrained Neural Network for two-dimensional MRI reconstruction. SCAMPI outperforms these by better reducing undersampling artifacts and yielding lower error metrics in multicoil imaging. In comparison to ConvDecoder, the U-Net architecture combined with an elaborated loss-function allows for much faster convergence at higher image quality. SCAMPI can reconstruct multicoil data without explicit knowledge of coil sensitivity profiles. Moreover, it is a novel tool for reconstructing undersampled single coil k-space data., Conclusion: Our approach avoids overfitting to dataset features, that can occur in Neural Networks trained on databases, because the network parameters are tuned only on the reconstruction data. Magnetic resonance imaging produces detailed anatomical and physiological images of the human body that can be used in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, MRI suffers its comparatively longer acquisition time than other imaging methods and is thus vulnerable to motion artifacts, which ultimately lead to likely failed or even wrong diagnosis. In order to perform faster reconstruction, deep learning-based methods along with traditional strategies such as parallel imaging and compressed sensing come into play in recent years in this field. Meanwhile, in order to better analyze the diseases, it is also often necessary to acquire images in the same region of interest under different modalities, which yield images with different contrast levels. However, most of these aforementioned methods tend to use single-modal images for reconstruction, neglecting the correlation and redundancy information embedded in MR images acquired with different modalities. While there are works on multi-modal reconstruction, the information is yet to be efficiently explored. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end neural network called MLMFNet, which helps the reconstruction of the target modality by using information from the auxiliary modality across feature channels and layers. Specifically, this is highlighted by three components: (I) An encoder based on UNet with a single-stream strategy that fuses auxiliary and target modalities; (II) a decoder that tends to multi-level features from all layers of the encoder, and (III) a channel attention module. Background and Objective: Training convolutional neural networks based on large amount of labeled data has made great progress in the field of image segmentation. However, in medical image segmentation tasks, annotating the data is expensive and time-consuming because pixel-level annotation requires experts in the relevant field. Currently, the combination of consistent regularization and pseudo labeling-based semi-supervised methods has shown good performance in image segmentation. However, in the training process, a portion of low-confidence pseudo labels are generated by the model. And the semi-supervised segmentation method still has the problem of distribution bias between labeled and unlabeled data. The objective of this study is to address the challenges of semi-supervised learning and improve the segmentation accuracy of semi-supervised models on medical images., Methods: To address these issues, we propose an Uncertainty-based Region Clipping Algorithm for semi-supervised medical image segmentation, which consists of two main modules. A module is introduced to compute the uncertainty of two sub-networks predictions with diversity using Monte Carlo Dropout, allowing the model to gradually learn from more reliable targets. To retain model diversity, we use different loss functions for different branches and use Non-Maximum Suppression in one of the branches. The other module is proposed to generate new samples by masking the low-confidence pixels in the original image based on uncertainty information. New samples are fed into the model to facilitate the model to generate pseudo labels with high confidence and enlarge the training data distribution., Results: Comprehensive experiments on the combination of two benchmarks ACDC and BraTS2019 show that our proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of Dice, HD95 and ASD. The results reach an average Dice score of 87.86 % and a HD95 score of 4.214 mm on ACDC dataset. For the brain tumor segmentation, the results reach an average Dice score of 84.79 % and a HD score of 10.13 mm., Conclusions: Our proposed method improves the accuracy of semi-supervised medical image segmentation. Extensive experiments on two public medical image datasets including 2D and 3D modalities demonstrate the superiority of our model. Purpose: To introduce a novel deep model-based architecture (DMBA), SPICER, that uses pairs of noisy and undersampled k-space measurements of the same object to jointly train a model for MRI reconstruction and automatic coil sensitivity estimation., Methods: SPICER consists of two modules to simultaneously reconstructs accurate MR images and estimates high-quality coil sensitivity maps (CSMs). The first module, CSM estimation module, uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate CSMs from the raw measurements. The second module, DMBA-based MRI reconstruction module, forms reconstructed images from the input measurements and the estimated CSMs using both the physical measurement model and learned CNN prior. With the benefit of our self-supervised learning strategy, SPICER can be efficiently trained without any fully sampled reference data., Results: We validate SPICER on both open-access datasets and experimentally collected data, showing that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance in highly accelerated data acquisition settings (up to 10 × $$ 10\times $$ ). Our results also highlight the importance of different modules of SPICER-including the DMBA, the CSM estimation, and the SPICER training loss-on the final performance of the method. Purpose: To propose the simulation-based physics-informed neural network for deconvolution of dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) MRI (SPINNED) as an alternative for more robust and accurate deconvolution compared to existing methods., Methods: The SPINNED method was developed by generating synthetic tissue residue functions and arterial input functions through mathematical simulations and by using them to create synthetic DSC MRI time series. The SPINNED model was trained using these simulated data to learn the underlying physical relation (deconvolution) between the DSC-MRI time series and the arterial input functions. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed SPINNED method were assessed by comparing it with two common deconvolution methods in DSC MRI data analysis, circulant singular value decomposition, and Volterra singular value decomposition, using both simulation data and real patient data., Results: The proposed SPINNED method was more accurate than the conventional methods across all SNR levels and showed better robustness against noise in both simulation and real patient data. The SPINNED method also showed much faster processing speed than the conventional methods., Conclusion: These results support that the proposed SPINNED method can be a good alternative to the existing methods for resolving the deconvolution problem in DSC MRI. The proposed method does not require any separate ground-truth measurement for training and offers additional benefits of quick processing time and coverage of diverse clinical scenarios. Robust segmenting with noisy labels is an important problem in medical imaging due to the difficulty of acquiring high-quality annotations. Despite the enormous success of recent developments, these developments still require multiple networks to construct their frameworks and focus on limited application scenarios, which leads to inflexibility in practical applications. They also do not explicitly consider the coarse boundary label problem, which results in sub-optimal results. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel Simultaneous Edge Alignment and Memory-Assisted Learning (SEAMAL) framework for noisy-label robust segmentation. It achieves single-network robust learning, which is applicable for both 2D and 3D segmentation, in both Set-HQ-knowable and Set-HQ-agnostic scenarios. Specifically, to achieve single-model noise robustness, we design a Memory-assisted Selection and Correction module (MSC) that utilizes predictive history consistency from the Prediction Memory Bank to distinguish between reliable and non-reliable labels pixel-wisely, and that updates the reliable ones at the superpixel level. To overcome the coarse boundary label problem, which is common in practice, and to better utilize shape-relevant information at the boundary, we propose an Edge Detection Branch (EDB) that explicitly learns the boundary via an edge detection layer with only slight additional computational cost, and we improve the sharpness and precision of the boundary with a thinning loss. Extensive experiments verify that SEAMAL outperforms previous works significantly.

Background: For time-consuming diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the breast, deep learning-based imaging acceleration appears particularly promising., Purpose: To investigate a combined k-space-to-image reconstruction approach for scan time reduction and improved spatial resolution in breast DWI., Study Type: Retrospective., Population: 133 women (age 49.7 ± 12.1 years) underwent multiparametric breast MRI., Field Strength/sequence: 3.0T/T2 turbo spin echo, T1 3D gradient echo, DWI (800 and 1600 sec/mm 2 )., Assessment: DWI data were retrospectively processed using deep learning-based k-space-to-image reconstruction (DL-DWI) and an additional super-resolution algorithm (SRDL-DWI). In addition to signal-to-noise ratio and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) comparisons among standard, DL- and SRDL-DWI, a range of quantitative similarity (e.g., structural similarity index [SSIM]) and error metrics (e.g., normalized root mean square error [NRMSE], symmetric mean absolute percent error [SMAPE], log accuracy error [LOGAC]) was calculated to analyze structural variations. Subjective image evaluation was performed independently by three radiologists on a seven-point rating scale., Statistical Tests: Friedman's rank-based analysis of variance with Bonferroni-corrected pairwise post-hoc tests. P < 0.05 was considered significant., Results: Both DL- and SRDL-DWI allowed for a 39% reduction in simulated scan time over standard DWI (5 vs. 3 minutes). The highest image quality ratings were assigned to SRDL-DWI with good interreader agreement (ICC 0.834; 95% confidence interval 0.818-0.848). Irrespective of b-value, both standard and DL-DWI produced superior SNR compared to SRDL-DWI. ADC values were slightly higher in SRDL-DWI (+0.5%) and DL-DWI (+3.4%) than in standard DWI. Structural similarity was excellent between DL-/SRDL-DWI and standard DWI for either b value (SSIM ≥ 0.86). Calculation of error metrics (NRMSE ≤ 0.05, SMAPE ≤ 0.02, and LOGAC ≤ 0.04) supported the assumption of low voxel-wise error., Data Conclusion: Deep learning-based k-space-to-image reconstruction reduces simulated scan time of breast DWI by 39% without influencing structural similarity. Transformer-based image denoising methods have shown remarkable potential but suffer from high computational cost and large memory footprint due to their linear operations for capturing long-range dependencies. In this work, we aim to develop a more resource-efficient Transformer-based image denoising method that maintains high performance. To this end, we propose an Efficient Wavelet Transformer (EWT), which incorporates a Frequency-domain Conversion Pipeline (FCP) to reduce image resolution without losing critical features, and a Multi-level Feature Aggregation Module (MFAM) with a Dual-stream Feature Extraction Block (DFEB) to harness hierarchical features effectively. EWT achieves a faster processing speed by over 80% and reduces GPU memory usage by more than 60% compared to the original Transformer, while still delivering denoising performance on par with state-of-the-art methods. The digitization of pathology departments in hospitals around the world is now a reality. The current commercial solutions applied to digitize histopathological samples consist of a robotic microscope with an RGB-type camera attached to it. This technology is very limited in terms of information captured, as it only works with three spectral bands of the visible electromagnetic spectrum. Therefore, we present an automated system that combines RGB and hyperspectral technology. Throughout this work, the hardware of the system and its components are described along with the developed software and a working methodology to ensure the correct capture of histopathological samples. The software is integrated by the controller of the microscope, which features an autofocus functionality, whole slide scanning with a stitching algorithm, and hyperspectral scanning functionality. As a reference, the time to capture and process a complete sample with 20 regions of high biological interest using the proposed method is estimated at a maximum of 79 min, reducing the time required by a manual operator by at least three times. Both hardware and software can be easily adapted to other systems that might benefit from the advantages of hyperspectral technology.

Background: The tile-based approach has been widely used for slide-level predictions in whole slide image (WSI) analysis. However, the irregular shapes and variable dimensions of tumor regions pose challenges for the process. To address this issue, we proposed PathEX, a framework that integrates intersection over tile (IoT) and background over tile (BoT) algorithms to extract tile images around boundaries of annotated regions while excluding the blank tile images within these regions., Methods: We developed PathEX, which incorporated IoT and BoT into tile extraction, for training a classification model in CAM (239 WSIs) and PAIP (40 WSIs) datasets. By adjusting the IoT and BoT parameters, we generated eight training sets and corresponding models for each dataset. The performance of PathEX was assessed on the testing set comprising 13,076 tile images from 48 WSIs of CAM dataset and 6,391 tile images from 10 WSIs of PAIP dataset., Results: PathEX could extract tile images around boundaries of annotated region differently by adjusting the IoT parameter, while exclusion of blank tile images within annotated regions achieved by setting the BoT parameter. As adjusting IoT from 0.1 to 1.0, and 1-BoT from 0.0 to 0.5, we got 8 train sets. Experimentation revealed that set C demonstrates potential as the most optimal candidate. Nevertheless, a combination of IoT values ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 and 1-BoT values ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 also yielded favorable outcomes., Conclusions: In this study, we proposed PathEX, a framework that integrates IoT and BoT algorithms for tile image extraction at the boundaries of annotated regions while excluding blank tiles within these regions. Researchers can conveniently set the thresholds for IoT and BoT to facilitate tile image extraction in their own studies. Investigating U-Net model robustness in medical image synthesis against adversarial perturbations, this study introduces RobMedNAS, a neural architecture search strategy for identifying resilient U-Net configurations. Through retrospective analysis of synthesized CT from MRI data, employing Dice coefficient and mean absolute error metrics across critical anatomical areas, the study evaluates traditional U-Net models and RobMedNAS-optimized models under adversarial attacks. Objective . Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is a type of limited-angle Computed Tomography (CT) used in orthopedic and oncology care to provide a pseudo-3D reconstructed volume of a body part from multiple x-ray projections. Patient motion during acquisitions results in artifacts which affect screening and diagnostic performances. Hence, accurate reconstruction of moving body parts from a tomosynthesis projection series is addressed in this paper, with a particular focus on the breast. The aim of this paper is to assess the feasibility of a novel dynamic reconstruction technique for DTS and evaluate its accuracy compared to an available ground truth. Approach . The proposed method is a combination of a 4D dynamic tomography strategy leveraging the formalism of Projection-based Digital Volume Correlation (P-DVC) with a multiscale approach to estimate and correct patient motion. Iterations of two operations are performed: (i) a motion-corrected reconstruction based on the Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Technique (SIRT) algorithm and (ii) a motion estimation from projection residuals, to obtain motion-free volumes. Performance is evaluated on a synthetic Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) case. Three slabs of a CIRS breast phantom are imaged on a Senographe Pristina TM , under plate-wise rigid body motions with amplitudes ranging up to 10 mm so that an independent measurement of the motion can be accessed. Results . Results show a motion estimation average precision down to 0.183 mm (1.83 voxels), when compared to the independent measurement. Moreover, an 84.2% improvement on the mean residual error and a 59.9% improvement on the root mean square error (RMSE) with the original static reconstruction are obtained. Significance . Objective . Existing registration networks based on cross-attention design usually divide the image pairs to be registered into patches for input. The division and merging operations of a series of patches are difficult to maintain the topology of the deformation field and reduce the interpretability of the network. Therefore, our goal is to develop a new network architecture based on a cross-attention mechanism combined with a multi-resolution strategy to improve the accuracy and interpretability of medical image registration. Approach . We propose a new deformable image registration network NCNet based on neighborhood cross-attention combined with multi-resolution strategy. The network structure mainly consists of a multi-resolution feature encoder, a multi-head neighborhood cross-attention module and a registration decoder. The hierarchical feature extraction capability of our encoder is improved by introducing large kernel parallel convolution blocks; the cross-attention module based on neighborhood calculation is used to reduce the impact on the topology of the deformation field and double normalization is used to reduce its computational complexity. Main result . We performed atlas-based registration and inter-subject registration tasks on the public 3D brain magnetic resonance imaging datasets LPBA40 and IXI respectively. Compared with the popular VoxelMorph method, our method improves the average DSC value by 7.9% and 3.6% on LPBA40 and IXI. Compared with the popular TransMorph method, our method improves the average DSC value by 4.9% and 1.3% on LPBA40 and IXI. Significance . We proved the advantages of the neighborhood attention calculation method compared to the window attention calculation method based on partitioning patches, and analyzed the impact of the pyramid feature encoder and double normalization on network performance. The utilization of digital statistical processes in images and videos can effectively tackle numerous challenges encountered in optical sensors. This research endeavors to overcome the limitations inherent in traditional focus models, particularly their inadequate accuracy. It aims to bolster the precision of real-time perception and dynamic control by employing enhanced data fusion methodologies. The ultimate objective is to facilitate information services that enable seamless interaction and profound integration between computational and physical processes within an open environment. To achieve this, an enhanced sum-modulus difference (SMD) evaluation function has been proposed. This innovation is founded on the concept of threshold value evaluation, aimed at rectifying the accuracy shortcomings of traditional focusing models. Through the computation of each gray value after threshold segmentation, the method identifies the most suitable threshold for image segmentation. This identified threshold is then applied to the focus search strategy employing the radial basis function (RBF) algorithm. Furthermore, an intelligent focusing system has been developed on the Zynq development platform, encompassing both hardware design and software program development. Contrast transfer function (CTF) estimation is a necessary step in the cryo-electron tomography (cryoET) workflow and essential for high-resolution in situ structural determination. However, the low signal-to-noise ratio and continuous defocus variation in micrographs of cryoET tilt series make accurate CTF estimation challenging. Here, we report a tilt-series-based joint CTF estimation method implemented in the new software CTFMeasure. The joint estimation method combines all Thon-ring signals in a tilt series to improve the estimation accuracy. By using an objective function involving the CTF parameters and geometric parameters of a cryoET tilt series, CTFMeasure can estimate the CTF parameters of each micrograph and the absolute tilt angle offset of the lamellar sample relative to the sample stage plane, which is usually the glancing angle used during focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Motivation: High-throughput time-lapse imaging is a fundamental tool for efficient living cell profiling at single-cell resolution. Label-free phase-contrast video microscopy enables noninvasive, nontoxic, and long-term imaging. The tradeoff between speed and throughput, however, implies that despite the state-of-the-art autofocusing algorithms, out-of-focus cells are unavoidable due to the migratory nature of immune cells (velocities >10 μm/min). Here, we propose PostFocus to (i) identify out-of-focus images within time-lapse sequences with a classifier, and (ii) deploy a de-noising diffusion probabilistic model to yield reliable in-focus images., Results: De-noising diffusion probabilistic model outperformed deep discriminative models with a superior performance on the whole image and around cell boundaries. Objective: To develop and evaluate a technique combining eddy current-nulled convex optimized diffusion encoding (ENCODE) with random matrix theory (RMT)-based denoising to accelerate and improve the apparent signal-to-noise ratio (aSNR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping in high-resolution prostate diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven subjects with clinical suspicion of prostate cancer were scanned at 3T with high-resolution (HR) (in-plane: 1.0 × 1.0 mm 2 ) ENCODE and standard-resolution (1.6 × 2.2 mm 2 ) bipolar DWI sequences (both had 7 repetitions for averaging, acquisition time [TA] of 5 min 50 s). HR-ENCODE was retrospectively analyzed using three repetitions (accelerated effective TA of 2 min 30 s). The RMT-based denoising pipeline utilized complex DWI signals and Marchenko-Pastur distribution-based principal component analysis to remove additive Gaussian noise in images from multiple coils, b-values, diffusion encoding directions, and repetitions. HR-ENCODE with RMT-based denoising (HR-ENCODE-RMT) was compared with HR-ENCODE in terms of aSNR in prostate peripheral zone (PZ) and transition zone (TZ). Precision and accuracy of ADC were evaluated by the coefficient of variation (CoV) between repeated measurements and mean difference (MD) compared to the bipolar ADC reference, respectively. Differences were compared using two-sided Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (P < 0.05 considered significant)., Results: HR-ENCODE-RMT yielded 62% and 56% higher median aSNR than HR-ENCODE (b = 800 s/mm 2 ) in PZ and TZ, respectively (P < 0.001). HR-ENCODE-RMT achieved 63% and 70% lower ADC-CoV than HR-ENCODE in PZ and TZ, respectively (P < 0.001). HR-ENCODE-RMT ADC and bipolar ADC had low MD of 22.7 × 10 -6 mm 2 /s in PZ and low MD of 90.5 × 10 -6 mm 2 /s in TZ., Conclusions: HR-ENCODE-RMT can shorten the acquisition time and improve the aSNR of high-resolution prostate DWI and achieve accurate and precise ADC measurements in the prostate., (© 2024. Purpose: Lateral response artifact (LRA) is caused by the interaction between film and flatbed scanner in the direction perpendicular to the scanning direction. This can significantly affect the accuracy of patient-specific quality assurance (QA) in cases involving large irradiation fields. We hypothesized that by utilizing the central area of the flatbed scanner, where the magnitude of LRA is relatively small, the LRA could be mitigated effectively. This study proposes a practical solution using the image-stitching technique to correct LRA for patient-specific QA involving large irradiation fields., Methods: Gafchromic™ EBT4 film and Epson Expression ES-G11000 flatbed scanner were used in this study. The image-stitching algorithm requires a spot between adjacent images to combine them. The film was scanned at three locations on a flatbed scanner, and these images were combined using the image-stitching technique. The combined film dose was then calculated and compared with the treatment planning system (TPS)-calculated dose using gamma analysis (3%/2 mm). Our proposed LRA correction was applied to several films exposed to 18 × 18 cm 2 open fields at doses of 200, 400, and 600 cGy, as well as to four clinical Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) treatment plans involving large fields., Results: For doses of 200, 400, and 600 cGy, the gamma analysis values with and without LRA corrections were 95.7% versus 67.8%, 95.5% versus 66.2%, and 91.8% versus 35.9%, respectively. For the clinical VMAT treatment plan, the average pass rate ± standard deviation in gamma analysis was 94.1% ± 0.4% with LRA corrections and 72.5% ± 1.5% without LRA corrections., Conclusions: The effectiveness of our proposed LRA correction using the image-stitching technique was demonstrated to significantly improve the accuracy of patient-specific QA for VMAT treatment plans involving large irradiation fields., (© 2024 The Author(s). Purpose: The aim of this work is to develop a method to solve the ill-posed inverse problem of accelerated image reconstruction while correcting forward model imperfections in the context of subject motion during MRI examinations., Methods: The proposed solution uses a Bayesian framework based on deep generative diffusion models to jointly estimate a motion-free image and rigid motion estimates from subsampled and motion-corrupt two-dimensional (2D) k-space data., Results: We demonstrate the ability to reconstruct motion-free images from accelerated two-dimensional (2D) Cartesian and non-Cartesian scans without any external reference signal. Purpose: To investigate the enhancement of image quality achieved through the utilization of SnapShot Freeze 2 (SSF2), a comparison was made against the results obtained from the original SnapShot Freeze algorithm (SSF) and standard motion correction (STND) in stent patients undergoing coronary CT angiography (CCTA) across the entire range of heart rates., Materials and Methods: A total of 118 patients who underwent CCTA, were retrospectively included in this study. Images of these patients were reconstructed using three different algorithms: SSF2, SSF, and STND. Objective assessments include signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), diameters of stents and artifact index (AI). The image quality was subjectively evaluated by two readers., Results: Compared with SSF and STND, SSF2 had similar or even higher quality in the parameters (AI, SNR, CNR, inner diameters) of coronary artery, stent, myocardium, MV (mitral valve), TV (tricuspid valve), AV (aorta valve), and PV (pulmonary valve), and aortic root (AO). Besides the above structures, SSF2 also demonstrated comparable or even higher subjective scores in atrial septum (AS), ventricular septum (VS), and pulmonary artery root (PA). Furthermore, the enhancement in image quality with SSF2 was significantly greater in the high heart rate group compared to the low heart rate group. Moreover, the improvement in both high and low heart rate groups was better in the SSF2 group compared to the SSF and STND group. Besides, when using the three algorithms, an effect of heart rate variability on stent image quality was not detected., Conclusion: Compared to SSF and STND, SSF2 can enhance the image quality of whole-heart structures and mitigate artifacts of coronary stents. Purpose: MR-STAT is a relatively new multiparametric quantitative MRI technique in which quantitative paramater maps are obtained by solving a large-scale nonlinear optimization problem. Managing reconstruction times is one of the main challenges of MR-STAT. In this work we leverage GPU hardware to reduce MR-STAT reconstruction times. A highly optimized, GPU-compatible Bloch simulation toolbox is developed as part of this work that can be utilized for other quantitative MRI techniques as well., Methods: The Julia programming language was used to develop a flexible yet highly performant and GPU-compatible Bloch simulation toolbox called BlochSimulators.jl. The runtime performance of the toolbox is benchmarked against other Bloch simulation toolboxes. Furthermore, a (partially matrix-free) modification of a previously presented (matrix-free) MR-STAT reconstruction algorithm is proposed and implemented using the Julia language on GPU hardware. The proposed algorithm is combined with BlochSimulators.jl and the resulting MR-STAT reconstruction times on GPU hardware are compared to previously presented MR-STAT reconstruction times., Results: The BlochSimulators.jl package demonstrates superior runtime performance on both CPU and GPU hardware when compared to other existing Bloch simulation toolboxes. The GPU-accelerated partially matrix-free MR-STAT reconstruction algorithm, which relies on BlochSimulators.jl, allows for reconstructions of 68 seconds per two-dimensional (2D slice)., Conclusion: By combining the proposed Bloch simulation toolbox and the partially matrix-free reconstruction algorithm, 2D MR-STAT reconstructions can be performed in the order of one minute on a modern GPU card. Oscillating Steady-State Imaging (OSSI) is a recently developed fMRI acquisition method that can provide 2 to 3 times higher SNR than standard fMRI approaches. However, because the OSSI signal exhibits a nonlinear oscillation pattern, one must acquire and combine n c (e.g., 10) OSSI images to get an image that is free of oscillation for fMRI, and fully sampled acquisitions would compromise temporal resolution. To improve temporal resolution and accurately model the nonlinearity of OSSI signals, instead of using subspace models that are not well suited for the data, we build the MR physics for OSSI signal generation as a regularizer for the undersampled reconstruction. Our proposed physics-based manifold model turns the disadvantages of OSSI acquisition into advantages and enables joint reconstruction and quantification. OSSI manifold model (OSSIMM) outperforms subspace models and reconstructs high-resolution fMRI images with a factor of 12 acceleration and without spatial or temporal smoothing. Furthermore, OSSIMM can dynamically quantify important physics parameters, including R 2 ∗ maps, with a temporal resolution of 150 ms.
