Diagonal groups are one of the classes of finite primitive permutation groups occurring in the conclusion of the O'Nan-Scott theorem. Several of the other classes have been described as the automorphism groups of geometric or combinatorial structures such as affine spaces or Cartesian decompositions, but such structures for diagonal groups have not been studied in general. The main purpose of this paper is to describe and characterise such structures, which we call diagonal semilattices. Unlike the diagonal groups in the O'Nan-Scott theorem, which are defined over finite characteristically simple groups, our construction works over arbitrary groups, finite or infinite. A diagonal semilattice depends on a dimension m and a group T. For m=2, it is a Latin square, the Cayley table of T, though in fact any Latin square satisfies our combinatorial axioms. However, for m≥3, the group T emerges naturally and uniquely from the axioms. (The situation somewhat resembles projective geometry, where projective planes exist in great profusion but higher-dimensional structures are coordinatised by an algebraic object, a division ring.) A diagonal semilattice is contained in the partition lattice on a set Ω, and we provide an introduction to the calculus of partitions. Many of the concepts and constructions come from experimental design in statistics. We also determine when a diagonal group can be primitive, or quasiprimitive (these conditions turn out to be equivalent for diagonal groups). In a previous paper, we obtained several "compact versions" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem, which allowed us to extrapolate the compactness of linear operators from just one space to the full range of weighted Lebesgue spaces, where these operators are bounded. In this paper, we study the extrapolation of compactness for bilinear operators in terms of bilinear Muckenhoupt weights. As applications, we easily recover and improve earlier results on the weighted compactness of commutators of bilinear Calder\'{o}n-Zygmund operators, bilinear fractional integrals and bilinear Fourier multipliers. More general versions of these results are recently due to Cao, Olivo and Yabuta (arXiv:2011.13191), whose approach depends on developing weighted versions of the Fr\'echet--Kolmogorov criterion of compactness, whereas we avoid this by relying on "softer" tools, which might have an independent interest in view of further extensions of the method., Comment: v3: final version, incorporated referee comments, to appear in Indagationes Mathematicae, 27 pages

Differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) are widely used for modeling of dynamical systems. In numerical analysis of DAEs, consistent initialization and index reduction are important preprocessing prior to numerical integration. Existing DAE solvers commonly adopt structural preprocessing methods based on combinatorial optimization. Unfortunately, the structural methods fail if the DAE has numerical or symbolic cancellations. For such DAEs, methods have been proposed to modify them to other DAEs to which the structural methods are applicable, based on the combinatorial relaxation technique. Existing modification methods, however, work only for a class of DAEs that are linear or close to linear. This paper presents two new modification methods for nonlinear DAEs: the substitution method and the augmentation method. Both methods are based on the combinatorial relaxation approach and are applicable to a large class of nonlinear DAEs. The substitution method symbolically solves equations for some derivatives based on the implicit function theorem and substitutes the solution back into the system. Instead of solving equations, the augmentation method modifies DAEs by appending new variables and equations. The augmentation method has advantages that the equation solving is not needed and the sparsity of DAEs is retained. It is shown in numerical experiments that both methods, especially the augmentation method, successfully modify high-index DAEs that the DAE solver in MATLAB cannot handle., Comment: A preliminary version of this paper is to appear in Proceedings of the 44th International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation (ISSAC 2019), Beijing, China, July 2019

When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify the spectrum $\mathfrak{B}$ of the Cartan subalgebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{S}, c)$. We then show that the quotient groupoid $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ acts on $\mathfrak{B}$, and that the corresponding action groupoid is exactly the Weyl groupoid of the Cartan pair. Lastly we show that, if the quotient map $\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ admits a continuous section, then the Weyl twist is also given by an explicit continuous $2$-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S} \ltimes \mathfrak{B}$., 32 pages

The aim of this paper is to generalize results known for the symplectic involutions on K3 surfaces to the order 3 symplectic automorphisms on K3 surfaces. In particular, we will explicitly describe the action induced on the lattice $\Lambda_{K3}$, isometric to the second cohomology group of a K3 surface, by a symplectic automorphism of order 3; we exhibit the maps $\pi_*$ and $\pi^*$ induced in cohomology by the rational quotient map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$, where $X$ is a K3 surface admitting an order 3 symplectic automorphism $\sigma$ and $Y$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient $X/\sigma$; we deduce the relation between the N\'eron--Severi group of $X$ and the one of $Y$. Applying these results we describe explicit geometric examples and generalize the Shioda--Inose structures, relating Abelian surfaces admitting order 3 endomorphisms with certain specific K3 surfaces admitting particular order 3 symplectic automorphisms., Comment: 28 pages. A question of Conca, Rossi, and Valla asks whether every quadratic Gorenstein ring $R$ of regularity three is Koszul. In a previous paper, we use idealization to answer their question, proving that in nine or more variables there exist quadratic Gorenstein rings of regularity three which are not Koszul. In this paper, we study the analog of the Conca-Rossi-Valla question when the regularity of $R$ is four or more. Let $R$ be a quadratic Gorenstein ring having $\mathrm{codim}\, R = c$ and $\mathrm{reg}\, R = r \ge 4$. We prove that if $c = r+1$ then $R$ is always Koszul, and for every $c \geq r+2$, we construct quadratic Gorenstein rings that are not Koszul, answering questions of Matsuda and Migliore-Nagel concerning the $h$-vectors of quadratic Gorenstein rings., Comment: v2 - Minor changes based on referee comments

Given a formal flat meromorphic connection over an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, in a previous paper we established existence of good formal structures and a good Deligne-Malgrange lattice after suitably blowing up. In this paper, we reinterpret and refine these results by introducing some related structures. We consider the turning locus, which is the set of points at which one cannot achieve a good formal structure without blowing up. We show that when the polar divisor has normal crossings, the turning locus is of pure codimension 1 within the polar divisor, and hence of pure codimension 2 within the full space; this had been previously established by Andre in the case of a smooth polar divisor. We also construct an irregularity sheaf and its associated b-divisor, which measure irregularity along divisors on blowups of the original space; this generalizes another result of Andre on the semicontinuity of irregularity in a curve fibration. One concrete consequence of these refinements is a process for resolution of turning points which is functorial with respect to regular morphisms of excellent schemes; this allows us to transfer the result from schemes to formal schemes, complex analytic varieties, and nonarchimedean analytic varieties., 27 pages; v4: refereed version; some technical edits in 2.2

Generalizing wavelets by adding desired redundancy and flexibility, framelets (i.e., wavelet frames) are of interest and importance in many applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Several key properties of framelets are high vanishing moments for sparse multiscale representation, fast framelet transforms for numerical efficiency, and redundancy for robustness. However, it is a challenging problem to study and construct multivariate nonseparable framelets, mainly due to their intrinsic connections to factorization and syzygy modules of multivariate polynomial matrices. Moreover, all the known multivariate tight framelets derived from spline refinable scalar functions have only one vanishing moment, and framelets derived from refinable vector functions are barely studied yet in the literature. In this paper, we circumvent the above difficulties through the approach of quasi-tight framelets, which behave almost identically to tight framelets. Employing the popular oblique extension principle (OEP), from an arbitrary compactly supported M-refinable vector function ϕ with multiplicity greater than one, we prove that we can always derive from ϕ a compactly supported multivariate quasi-tight framelet such that: (i) all the framelet generators have the highest possible order of vanishing moments; (ii) its associated fast framelet transform has the highest balancing order and is compact. For a refinable scalar function ϕ (i.e., its multiplicity is one), the above item (ii) often cannot be achieved intrinsically but we show that we can always construct a compactly supported OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight framelet derived from ϕ satisfying item (i). We point out that constructing OEP-based quasi-tight framelets is closely related to the generalized spectral factorization of Hermitian trigonometric polynomial matrices. Our proof is critically built on a newly developed result on the normal form of a matrix-valued filter, which is of interest and importance in itself for greatly facilitating the study of refinable vector functions and multiwavelets/multiframelets. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated framelet transforms with high balancing orders. This deepens our theoretical understanding of multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated fast multiframelet transforms.

In this paper we prove that a nodal hypersurface in P^4 with defect has at least (d-1)^2 nodes, and if it has at most 2(d-2)(d-1) nodes and d>6 then it contains either a plane or a quadric surface. Furthermore, we prove that a nodal double cover of P^3 ramified along a surface of degree 2d with defect has at least d(2d-1) nodes. Starting with work of Serre, Katz, and Swinnerton-Dyer, theta operators have played a key role in the study of $p$-adic and $\bmod p$ modular forms and Galois representations. This paper achieves two main results for theta operators on automorphic forms on PEL-type Shimura varieties: 1) the analytic continuation at unramified primes $p$ to the whole Shimura variety of the $\bmod p$ reduction of $p$-adic Maass--Shimura operators {\it a priori} defined only over the $\mu$-ordinary locus, and 2) the construction of new $\bmod p$ theta operators that do not arise as the $\bmod p$ reduction of Maass--Shimura operators. While the main accomplishments of this paper concern the geometry of Shimura varieties and consequences for differential operators, we conclude with applications to Galois representations. Our approach involves a careful analysis of the behavior of Shimura varieties and enables us to obtain more general results than allowed by prior techniques, including for arbitrary signature, vector weights, and unramified primes in CM fields of arbitrary degree., Comment: Accepted for publication in IMRN. 42 pages

Recently, two of the authors of this paper constructed cyclic cocycles on Harish-Chandra's Schwartz algebra of linear reductive Lie groups that detect all information in the $K$-theory of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebra. The main result in this paper is an index formula for the pairings of these cocycles with equivariant indices of elliptic operators for proper, cocompact actions. This index formula completely determines such equivariant indices via topological expressions., 40 pages; updates based on referee comments; expanded proof of Proposition 3.3

This is a follow-up paper of arXiv:1805.00115, where rational curves in surfaces that satisfy general positioned point and cross-ratio conditions were enumerated. A suitable correspondence theorem provided in arXiv:1509.07453 allowed us to use tropical geometry, and, in particular, a degeneration technique called floor diagrams. This correspondence theorem also holds in higher dimension. In the current paper, we introduce so-called cross-ratio floor diagrams and show that they allow us to determine the number of rational space curves that satisfy general positioned point and cross-ratio conditions. Moreover, graphical contributions are introduced which provide a novel and structured way of understanding multiplicities of floor decomposed curves in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Additionally, so-called condition flows on a tropical curve are used to reflect how conditions imposed on a tropical curve yield different types of edges. Let us fix a prime $p$. The Erd\H{o}s-Ginzburg-Ziv problem asks for the minimum integer $s$ such that any collection of $s$ points in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$ contains $p$ points whose centroid is also a lattice point in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. For large $n$, this is essentially equivalent to asking for the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero. In this paper, we give a new upper bound for this problem for any fixed prime $p\geq 5$ and large $n$. In particular, we prove that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero has size at most $C_p\cdot \left(2\sqrt{p}\right)^n$, where $C_p$ is a constant only depending on $p$. For $p$ and $n$ going to infinity, our bound is of the form $p^{(1/2)\cdot (1+o(1))n}$, whereas all previously known upper bounds were of the form $p^{(1-o(1))n}$ (with $p^n$ being a trivial bound). Our proof uses the so-called multi-colored sum-free theorem which is a consequence of the Croot-Lev-Pach polynomial method. This method and its consequences were already applied by Naslund as well as by Fox and the author to prove bounds for the problem studied in this paper. However, using some key new ideas, we significantly improve their bounds., Comment: 11 pages

In a paper from 2001 (Journal of the LMS), Diestel and Leader offered a proof that a connected graph has a normal spanning tree if and only if it does not contain a minor from two specific forbidden classes of graphs, all of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Unfortunately, their proof contains a gap, and their result is incorrect. In this paper, we construct a third type of obstruction: an $\aleph_1$-sized graph without a normal spanning tree that contains neither of the two types described by Diestel and Leader as a minor. Further, we show that any list of forbidden minors characterising the graphs with normal spanning trees must contain graphs of arbitrarily large cardinality., Comment: 9 pages. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2005.02833

The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of examples of minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets, which illustrate certain aspects of this classification. These examples are constructed as actions on rooted trees. The acting groups are countable subgroups of the product or of the wreath product of groups. We discuss applications of our results to the study of attractors of dynamical systems and of minimal sets of foliations., 20 pages, 1 figure. In the first part of the paper, we clarify the connections between several algebraic objects appearing in matroid theory: both partial fields and hyperfields are fuzzy rings, fuzzy rings are tracts, and these relations are compatible with the respective matroid theories. Moreover, fuzzy rings are ordered blueprints and lie in the intersection of tracts with ordered blueprints; we call the objects of this intersection pastures. In the second part, we construct moduli spaces for matroids over pastures. We show that, for any non-empty finite set $E$, the functor taking a pasture $F$ to the set of isomorphism classes of rank-$r$ $F$-matroids on $E$ is representable by an ordered blue scheme $Mat(r,E)$, the moduli space of rank-$r$ matroids on $E$. In the third part, we draw conclusions on matroid theory. A classical rank-$r$ matroid $M$ on $E$ corresponds to a $\mathbb{K}$-valued point of $Mat(r,E)$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is the Krasner hyperfield. Such a point defines a residue pasture $k_M$, which we call the universal pasture of $M$. We show that for every pasture $F$, morphisms $k_M\to F$ are canonically in bijection with $F$-matroid structures on $M$. An analogous weak universal pasture $k_M^w$ classifies weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$. The unit group of $k_M^w$ can be canonically identified with the Tutte group of $M$. We call the sub-pasture $k_M^f$ of $k_M^w$ generated by ``cross-ratios' the foundation of $M$,. It parametrizes rescaling classes of weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$, and its unit group is coincides with the inner Tutte group of $M$. We show that a matroid $M$ is regular if and only if its foundation is the regular partial field, and a non-regular matroid $M$ is binary if and only if its foundation is the field with two elements. This yields a new proof of the fact that a matroid is regular if and only if it is both binary and orientable., 85 pages; some additional material, e.g. a new section 5.6; the terminology has been adapted to the usage in follow-up papers

We study a free boundary problem for a parabolic partial differential equation in which the solution is coupled to the moving boundary through an integral constraint. The problem arises as the hydrodynamic limit of an interacting particle system involving branching Brownian motion with selection, the so-called Brownian bees model which is studied in a companion paper. In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution to the free boundary problem, and we characterise the behaviour of the solution in the large time limit., Comment: 53 pages

We are interested in the McKay quiver $\Gamma(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, followed by $G(r,1,n)$ for $r >1$. Then, using Clifford theory, we can determine the McKay quiver for any $G(r,p,n)$ and thus for all finite irreducible complex reflection groups up to finitely many exceptions. In the second part of the paper we consider a more conceptual approach to McKay quivers of arbitrary finite groups: we define the Lusztig algebra $\widetilde A(G)$ of a finite group $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$, which is Morita equivalent to the skew group ring $A*G$. This description gives us an embedding of the basic algebra Morita equivalent to $A*G$ into a matrix algebra over $A$., Comment: v2: minor revision, final version to appear in Algebr. Represent. We express the Masur-Veech volume and the area Siegel-Veech constant of the moduli space $\mathcal{Q}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ meromorphic quadratic differentials with $n$ simple poles as polynomials in the intersection numbers of $\psi$-classes with explicit rational coefficients. The formulae obtained in this article result from lattice point counts involving the Kontsevich volume polynomials that also appear in Mirzakhani's recursion for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundaries. A similar formula for the Masur-Veech volume (though without explicit evaluation) was obtained earlier by Mirzakhani via completely different approach. Furthermore, we prove that the density of the mapping class group orbit of any simple closed multicurve $\gamma$ inside the ambient set of integral measured laminations computed by Mirzakhani coincides with the density of square-tiled surfaces having horizontal cylinder decomposition associated to $\gamma$ among all square-tiled surfaces in $\mathcal{Q}_{g,n}$. We study the resulting densities (or, equivalently, volume contributions) in more detail in the special case $n=0$. In particular, we compute the asymptotic frequencies of separating and non-separating simple closed geodesics on a closed hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ for small $g$ and we show that for large genera the separating closed geodesics are $\sqrt{\frac{2}{3\pi g}}\cdot\frac{1}{4^g}$ times less frequent., Comment: The current paper (as well as the companion paper arXiv:2007.04740) has grown from arxiv:1908.08611. Chinta and Gunnells introduced a rather intricate multi-parameter Weyl group action on rational functions on a torus, which, when the parameters are specialized to certain Gauss sums, describes the functional equations of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series associated to metaplectic (n-fold) covers of algebraic groups. In subsequent joint work with Puskas, they extended this action to a "metaplectic" representation of the equal parameter affine Hecke algebra, which allowed them to obtain explicit formulas for the p-parts of these Dirichlet series. They have also verified by a computer check the remarkable fact that their formulas continue to define a group action for general (unspecialized) parameters. In the first part of paper we give a conceptual explanation of this fact, by giving a uniform and elementary construction of the "metaplectic" representation for generic Hecke algebras as a suitable quotient of a parabolically induced affine Hecke algebra module, from which the associated Chinta-Gunnells Weyl group action follows through localization. In the second part of the paper we extend the metaplectic representation to the double affine Hecke algebra, which provides a generalization of Cherednik's basic representation. This allows us to introduce a new family of "metaplectic" polynomials, which generalize nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this paper, we provide the details of the construction of metaplectic polynomials in type A; the general case will be handled in the sequel to this paper., 39 pages. A great number of theoretical results are known about log Gromov-Witten invariants, but few calculations are worked out. In this paper we restrict to surfaces and to genus 0 stable log maps of maximal tangency. We ask how various natural components of the moduli space contribute to the log Gromov-Witten invariants. The first such calculation by Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert deals with multiple covers over rigid curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting. As a natural continuation, in this paper we compute the contributions of non-rigid irreducible curves in the log Calabi-Yau setting and that of the union of two rigid curves in general position. For the former, we construct and study a moduli space of "logarithmic" 1-dimensional sheaves and compare the resulting multiplicity with tropical multiplicity. For the latter, we explicitly describe the components of the moduli space and work out the logarithmic deformation theory in full, which we then compare with the deformation theory of the analogous relative stable maps., Comment: Added two example sections including a comparison with tropical multiplicity. 53 pages, 4 figures

The purpose of this paper is to analyze solutions of a non-local nonlinear partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) in multidimensional spaces. Such class of PIDE often arises in financial modeling. We employ the theory of abstract semilinear parabolic equations in order to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions in the scale of Bessel potential spaces. We consider a wide class of Lévy measures satisfying suitable growth conditions near the origin and infinity. The novelty of the paper is the generalization of already known results in the one space dimension to the multidimensional case. We consider Black–Scholes models for option pricing on underlying assets following a Lévy stochastic process with jumps. As an application to option pricing in the one-dimensional space, we consider a general shift function arising from a nonlinear option pricing model taking into account a large trader stock-trading strategy. We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution to the nonlinear PIDE in which the shift function may depend on a prescribed large investor stock-trading strategy function.

In this paper, we introduce a general family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials and investigate several $q$-series identities such as an extended generating function and a Srivastava-Agarwal type bilinear generating function for this family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials. We give a transformational identity involving generating functions for the generalized $q$-hypergeometric polynomials which we have introduced here. We also point out relevant connections of the various $q$-results, which we investigate here, with those in several related earlier works on this subject. We conclude this paper by remarking that it will be a rather trivial and inconsequential exercise to give the so-called $(p,q)$-variations of the $q$-results, which we have investigated here, because the additional parameter $p$ is obviously redundant., 14 pages

A concept of emergence was recently introduced in the paper [Berger] in order to quantify the richness of possible statistical behaviors of orbits of a given dynamical system. In this paper, we develop this concept and provide several new definitions, results, and examples. We introduce the notion of topological emergence of a dynamical system, which essentially evaluates how big the set of all its ergodic probability measures is. On the other hand, the metric emergence of a particular reference measure (usually Lebesgue) quantifies how non-ergodic this measure is. We prove fundamental properties of these two emergences, relating them with classical concepts such as Kolmogorov's $\epsilon$-entropy of metric spaces and quantization of measures. We also relate the two types of emergences by means of a variational principle. Furthermore, we provide several examples of dynamics with high emergence. First, we show that the topological emergence of some standard classes of hyperbolic dynamical systems is essentially the maximal one allowed by the ambient. Secondly, we construct examples of smooth area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are extremely non-ergodic in the sense that the metric emergence of the Lebesgue measure is essentially maximal. These examples confirm that super-polynomial emergence indeed exists, as conjectured in the paper [Berger]. This work is a continuation of the work that started in Covering with Universally Baire Functions Advances in Mathematics, and the main conjecture of the current paper is a revision of the UB Covering Conjecture of the aforementioned paper.

Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let $W$ be its Weyl group. In a series of papers, Lusztig introduced a map from the set $[W]$ of conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set $[G_u]$ of unipotent classes of $G$. This map, when restricted to the set of elliptic conjugacy classes $[W_e]$ of $W$, is injective. In this paper, we show that Lusztig's map $[W_e] \to [G_u]$ is order-reversing, with respect to the natural partial order on $[W_e]$ arising from combinatorics and the natural partial order on $[G_u]$ arising from geometry., Comment: 25 pages

The aim of this paper is to study, by using the mathematical tools developed by Chałupnik, Touzé, and Van der Kallen, the effect of the Frobenius twist on $\operatorname{Ext}$-group in the category of strict polynomial functors. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas of cohomology of the orthogonal groups and symplectic ones.

Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we call a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturated number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we are mainly interested in the four-point poset called the butterfly. Ferrara, Kay, Kramer, Martin, Reiniger, Smith and Sullivan showed that the saturation number for the butterfly lies between $\log_2{n}$ and $n^2$. We give a linear lower bound of $n+1$. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser for regular and meromorphic 1-forms on good reduction curves, respectively. We then employ tropical geometric techniques due to the first-named author with Rabinoff and Zureick-Brown to convert the Berkovich-Coleman integrals into abelian integrals. The notion of n-wide subcategories of Mod R is introduced and studied in Matsui-Nam-Takahashi-Tri-Yen in relation to the cohomological dimension of a specialization-closed subset of Spec R. In this paper, we introduce the notions of n-coherent subsets of Spec R and n-uniform subcategories of D(Mod R), and explore their interactions with n-wide subcategories of Mod R. In this paper, we extend the notion of microstate free entropy to the bi-free setting. In particular, using the bi-free analogue of random matrices, microstate bi-free entropy is defined. Properties essential to an entropy theory are developed, such as the behaviour of the entropy when transformations on the left variables or on the right variables are performed. In addition, the microstate bi-free entropy is demonstrated to be additive over bi-free collections provided additional regularity assumptions are included and is computed for all bi-free central limit distributions. The paper is devoted to a comprehensive study of composite models in variational analysis and optimization the importance of which for numerous theoretical, algorithmic, and applied issues of operations research is difficult to overstate. The underlying theme of our study is a systematical replacement of conventional metric regularity and related requirements by much weaker metric subregulatity ones that lead us to significantly stronger and completely new results of first-order and second-order variational analysis and optimization. In this way, we develop extended calculus rules for first-order and second-order generalized differential constructions while paying the main attention in second-order variational theory to the new and rather large class of fully subamenable compositions. Applications to optimization include deriving enhanced no-gap second-order optimality conditions in constrained composite models, complete characterizations of the uniqueness of Lagrange multipliers, strong metric subregularity of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems in parametric optimization, and so on.

O'Grady constructed a 6-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic variety by taking a crepant resolution of some moduli space of stable sheaves on an abelian surface. In this paper, we naturally extend O'Grady's construction to fields of positive characteristic p greater than 2, called OG6 varieties. We show that a supersingular OG6 variety is unirational, its rational cohomology group is generated by algebraic classes, and its rational Chow motive is of Tate type. These results confirm in this case the generalized Artin--Shioda conjecture, the supersingular Tate conjecture and the supersingular Bloch conjecture proposed in our previous work, in analogy with the theory of supersingular K3 surfaces., Comment: Final version. The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of the finitely generated subgroups of a family of branch groups, which includes the first Grigorchuk group and the Gupta-Sidki 3-group. This description is made via the notion of block subgroup. We then use this to show that all groups in the above family are subgroup separable (LERF). We study global-in-time dynamics of the stochastic nonlinear wave equations (SNLW) with an additive space-time white noise forcing, posed on the two-dimensional torus. Our goal in this paper is two-fold. (i) By introducing a hybrid argument, combining the $I$-method in the stochastic setting with a Gronwall-type argument, we first prove global well-posedness of the (renormalized) cubic SNLW in the defocusing case. Our argument yields a double exponential growth bound on the Sobolev norm of a solution. (ii) We then study the stochastic damped nonlinear wave equations (SdNLW) in the defocusing case. In particular, by applying Bourgain's invariant measure argument, we prove almost sure global well-posedness of the (renormalized) defocusing SdNLW with respect to the Gibbs measure and invariance of the Gibbs measure., 33 pages. This paper proposes a numerical upscaling procedure for elliptic boundary value problems with diffusion tensors that vary randomly on small scales. The method compresses the random partial differential operator to an effective quasilocal deterministic operator that represents the expected solution on a coarse scale of interest. Error estimates consisting of a priori and a posteriori terms are provided that allow one to quantify the impact of uncertainty in the diffusion coefficient on the expected effective response of the process.

We prove local uniformization of Abhyankar valuations of an algebraic function field K over a ground field k. Our result generalizes the proof of this result, with the additional assumption that the residue field of the valuation ring is separable over k, by Hagen Knaf and Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann. The Donaldson-Fujiki K\"ahler reduction of the space of compatible almost complex structures, leading to the interpretation of the scalar curvature of K\"ahler metrics as a moment map, can be lifted canonically to a hyperk\"ahler reduction. Donaldson proposed to consider the corresponding vanishing moment map conditions as (fully nonlinear) analogues of Hitchin's equations, for which the underlying bundle is replaced by a polarised manifold. However this construction is well understood only in the case of complex curves. In this paper we study Donaldson's hyperk\"ahler reduction on abelian varieties and toric manifolds. We obtain a decoupling result, a variational characterisation, a relation to $K$-stability in the toric case, and prove existence and uniqueness under suitable assumptions on the ``Higgs tensor''. The notion of best approximation mapping (BAM) with respect to a closed affine subspace in finite-dimensional space was introduced by Behling, Bello Cruz and Santos to show the linear convergence of the block-wise circumcentered-reflection method. The best approximation mapping possesses two critical properties of the circumcenter mapping for linear convergence. Because the iteration sequence of BAM linearly converges, the BAM is interesting in its own right. In this paper, we naturally extend the definition of BAM from closed affine subspace to nonempty closed convex set and from $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ to general Hilbert space. We discover that the convex set associated with the BAM must be the fixed point set of the BAM. Hence, the iteration sequence generated by a BAM linearly converges to the nearest fixed point of the BAM. Connections between BAMs and other mappings generating convergent iteration sequences are considered. Behling et al.\ proved that the finite composition of BAMs associated with closed affine subspaces is still a BAM in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We generalize their result from $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ to general Hilbert space and also construct a new constant associated with the composition of BAMs. This provides a new proof of the linear convergence of the method of alternating projections. Moreover, compositions of BAMs associated with general convex sets are investigated. In addition, we show that convex combinations of BAMs associated with affine subspaces are BAMs. Last but not least, we connect BAM with circumcenter mapping in Hilbert spaces., 31 pages and 2 figures

The first part of this paper is a generalization of the Feix-Kaledin theorem on the existence of a hyperkahler metric on a neighbourhood of the zero section of the cotangent bundle of a Kahler manifold. We show that the problem of constructing a hyperkahler structure on a neighbourhood of a complex Lagrangian submanifold in a holomorphic symplectic manifold reduces to the existence of certain deformations of holomorphic symplectic structures. The Feix-Kaledin structure is recovered from the twisted cotangent bundle. We then show that every holomorphic symplectic groupoid over a compact holomorphic Poisson surface of Kahler type has a hyperkahler structure on a neighbourhood of its identity section. More generally, we reduce the existence of a hyperkahler structure on a symplectic realization of a holomorphic Poisson manifold of any dimension to the existence of certain deformations of holomorphic Poisson structures adapted from Hitchin's unobstructedness theorem., 20 pages. We revisit the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue problem on a smooth, bounded, $(k-1)$-convex domain in $\mathbb R^n$. First, we obtain a spectral characterization of the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue as the infimum of the first eigenvalues of linear second-order elliptic operators whose coefficients belong to the dual of the corresponding G\r{a}rding cone. Second, we introduce a non-degenerate inverse iterative scheme to solve the eigenvalue problem for the $k$-Hessian operator. We show that the scheme converges, with a rate, to the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue for all $k$. When $2\leq k\leq n$, we also prove a local $L^1$ convergence of the Hessian of solutions of the scheme. When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to algebraic and combinatorial study. The theory of virtual resolutions includes a notion of a virtually Cohen--Macaulay property, though tools for assessing which modules are virtually Cohen--Macaulay have only recently started to be developed. In this paper, we continue this research program in two related ways. The first is that, when $X$ is a product of projective spaces, we produce a large new class of virtually Cohen--Macaulay Stanley--Reisner rings, which we show to be virtually Cohen--Macaulay via explicit constructions of appropriate virtual resolutions reflecting the underlying combinatorial structure. The second is that, for an arbitrary smooth projective toric variety $X$, we develop homological tools for assessing the virtual Cohen--Macaulay property. Some of these tools give exclusionary criteria, and others are constructive methods for producing suitably short virtual resolutions. In this paper we develop a method to transfer density results for primitive automatic sequences to logarithmic-density results for general automatic sequences. As an application we show that the logarithmic densities of any automatic sequence along squares $(n^2)_{n\geq 0}$ and primes $(p_n)_{n\geq 1}$ exist and are computable. Furthermore, we give for these subsequences a criterion to decide whether the densities exist, in which case they are also computable. In particular in the prime case these densities are all rational. We also deduce from a recent result of the third author and Lema\'nczyk that all subshifts generated by automatic sequences are orthogonal to any bounded multiplicative aperiodic function., Comment: 35 pages. A graph $X$ is defined inductively to be $(a_0,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular if $X$ is $a_0$-regular and for every vertex $v$ of $X$, the sphere of radius $1$ around $v$ is an $(a_1,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular graph. Such a graph $X$ is said to be highly regular (HR) of level $n$ if $a_{n-1}\neq 0$. Chapman, Linial and Peled studied HR-graphs of level 2 and provided several methods to construct families of graphs which are expanders "globally and locally". They ask whether such HR-graphs of level 3 exist. In this paper we show how the theory of Coxeter groups, and abstract regular polytopes and their generalisations, can lead to such graphs. Given a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a subset $M$ of $S$, we construct highly regular quotients of the 1-skeleton of the associated Wythoffian polytope $\mathcal{P}_{W,M}$, which form an infinite family of expander graphs when $(W,S)$ is indefinite and $\mathcal{P}_{W,M}$ has finite vertex links. The regularity of the graphs in this family can be deduced from the Coxeter diagram of $(W,S)$. The expansion stems from applying superapproximation to the congruence subgroups of the linear group $W$. This machinery gives a rich collection of families of HR-graphs, with various interesting properties, and in particular answers affirmatively the question asked by Chapman, Linial and Peled., Comment: 22 pages, 2 tables. In the present paper, we construct a cusped hyperbolic $4$-manifold with all cusp sections homeomorphic to the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold, which is a rational homology sphere. By a result of Gol\'enia and Moroianu, the Laplacian on $2$-forms on such a manifold has purely discrete spectrum. This shows that one of the main results of Mazzeo and Phillips from 1990 cannot hold without additional assumptions on the homology of the cusps. This also answers a question by Gol\'enia and Moroianu from 2012. We put forward a new method for obtaining quantitative lower bounds on the top Lyapunov exponent of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Our method combines (i) an (apparently new) identity connecting the top Lyapunov exponent to a Fisher information-like functional of the stationary density of the Markov process tracking tangent directions with (ii) a novel, quantitative version of H\"ormander's hypoelliptic regularity theory in an $L^1$ framework which estimates this (degenerate) Fisher information from below by a $W^{s,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ Sobolev norm. This method is applicable to a wide range of systems beyond the reach of currently existing mathematically rigorous methods.
