In this study, the transcriptome profiles of tissue–cultured grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. × Vitis labrusca L.: Rose Honey) seedlings inoculated with fungal endophytes Epicoccum layuense R2-21 (Epi R2-21) and Alternaria alternata XHYN2 (Alt XHYN2), were analyzed at three different time points (6 h, 6 d, and 15 d). A total of 4783 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was found, of which 1853 (6 h), 3878 (6 d), and 4732 (15 d) were differentially expressed relative to those of the control in endophyte Epi R2-21 treatments, while a total of 5898 DEGs, of which 2726 (6 h), 4610 (6 d), and 3938 (15 d) were differentially expressed in endophyte Alt XHYN2 treatments. DEGs enriched in secondary metabolic pathways, plant–pathogen interaction, and hormone signalling were further analysed. The upregulated DEGs in the Epi R2-21 and Alt XHYN2 treatments, both enriched in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), were mainly involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, stilbenoid, diarylheptanoid and gingerol biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and circadian rhythms–plant and plant–pathogen interactions, similar to the trend observed in our previous study conducted on the cultivar 'Cabernet Sauvignon' (Vitis vinifera L.). Taken together with the results obtained from the cultivar 'Cabernet Sauvignon', it was found that tissue-cultured seedlings of the cultivar 'Rose Honey' induced a stronger defence response to fungal endophyte infection than that of the cultivar 'Cabernet Sauvignon', and inoculation with the endophyte Alt XHYN2 triggered a stronger response than inoculation with the endophyte Epi R2-21. In addition, the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network revealed that the genes VIT_16s0100g00910, encoding CHS, and VIT_11s0065g00350, encoding CYP73A, were involved in secondary metabolism and thus mediated in the resistance mechanism of grapevine on both the cultivars. The results showed that inoculation with the endophytes Epi R2-21 and Alt XHYN2 had a great ability to induce defence responses and reprogram the gene expression profiles in different grapevine cultivars, which deepens our knowledge of the interaction between fungal endophytes and grapevine and gives hints for grape quality management in viticulture using candidate fungal endophytes. Safety, progress, and investment risks are correlated during the construction period of large-scale water transfer projects. However, previous studies have only considered individual risk factors, overlooking the potential systemic risk posed to safety, progress, and investment, as well as any underlying common cause failures. Since traditional risk analysis methods are ill-suited to addressing common cause failure, this paper's objective was to establish a comprehensive evaluation index framework and to identify the basic events of common cause failure. To do that, we developed a risk analysis method that models common cause failure based on a Bayesian network for assessing that systemic risk. The Henan Section of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe River Water Diversion Project in China was then used as a case study. The results show that a variety of common cause failure events, such as epidemic disease, design alteration, lagged approval process, heavy rain in the flood season, renewal material and failing equipment, construction accidents, and external interference, can significantly impact the safety, progress, and investment systemic risk. Design alteration poses the greatest risk, with renewal material and failing equipment exerting the strongest influence among all common cause failure events. It is also possible to elucidate the predominant causal chains; specifically, the contributing influence of each basic failure event to the systemic risk can be clarified by adjusting their respective initial state. The failure of renewal material and failing equipment was found to significantly increase the safety risk. This study effectively simulated the complex causal relationships and uncertainties of pertinent risk factors, thereby enhancing our understanding of the systemic risk associated with safety, progress, and investment in large-scale water transfer projects. Dendrite formation and water-triggered side reactions on the surface of Zn metal anodes severely restrict the commercial viability of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this work, we introduce erythritol (Et) as an electrolyte additive to enhance the reversibility of zinc anodes, given its cost-effectiveness, mature technology, and extensive utilization in various domains such as food, medicine, and other industries. By combining multiscale theoretical simulation and experimental characterization, it was demonstrated that Et molecules can partially replace the coordination H2O molecules to reshape the Zn2+ solvation sheath and destroy the hydrogen bond network of the aqueous electrolyte. More importantly, Et molecules tend to adsorb on the zinc anode surface, simultaneously inhibit water-triggered side reactions by isolating water and promote uniform and dense deposition by accelerating the Zn2+ diffusion and regulating the nucleation size of the Zn grain. Thanks to this synergistic mechanism, the Zn anode can achieve a cycle life of more than 3900 h at 1 mA cm−2 and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.77%. Coupling with δ-MnO2 cathodes, the full battery delivers a high specific capacity of 228.1 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 76% over 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although exposure to individual metal does exhibit its toxicity, combined exposures provide a more effective representation of the toxic effects of different heavy metal exposures on public health as well as ecosystems. Furthermore, there are few studies on composite exposure to low concentrations of heavy metals, which is more consistent with real-life exposure. The purpose of this study was to explore the neurotoxicity induced by combined exposure to low concentrations of Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and the potential interaction of their mixture in vitro. Methods: PC12 cells were incubation with the corresponding concentration of cadmium chloride and/or lead acetate. Viability of PC12 cells was measured by CCK8 assay after 12, 24 and 48h incubation. Next, We measured the ROS, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and apoptosis produced by different treated cells using ROS assay kit, JC-1 MMP assay kit and annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide (PI) apoptosis assay kit, respectively. Expression of proteins related to PI3K/AKT and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in PC12 cells were tested by western blotting. Our study was the first to analyze the interaction between Pb and Cd using a 3 × 3 factorial design approach to observe neurotoxicity. Results: The results showed that the combined exposure of them was more cytotoxic than the single metal. The activation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and several parameters related to oxidative stress and ER stress were significantly altered in combined exposure to low concentrations of Pb and Cd compared with the Pb or Cd. Regarding apoptosis and ER stress, a synergistic interaction between Pb and Cd was evident. Moreover, evoked ER stress as a mechanism involved in the apoptosis of PC12 cells by the combined exposure to Pb and Cd. Conclusion: The present study provides a theoretical basis used for the toxicological assessment of metal mixtures induced neurotoxicity of concern in terms of public health, and more effective control measures should be taken for the environmental pollution caused by various mixed heavy metals discharged from industry and agriculture. The Hanjiang River, as a water donor basin, plays a fundamental role in supporting water supply security in northern China while maintaining the health and stability of ecosystems within the basin. However, the combined influence of climate change and anthropogenic interference has resulted in a significant change in the flow regime of the basin, challenging the sustainability of the river system. In order to understand the impact of the above factors on the river runoff, we analyzed the temporal and spatial pattern of runoff and climate factors in the basin and quantitatively assessed the contribution of climate change and human activities to the change in runoff using the elasticity coefficient method. Our results indicate that annual runoff has experienced a significant downward trend over the past 60 years, which is projected to continue into the future. It is also found that the temporal pattern of the runoff regime differed upstream and downstream of the Danjiangkou Reservoir due to the joint operation of the reservoir and China's Middle Route Project of South-to-North Water Diversion (MRP-SNWD). A significant decrease in runoff was primarily attributed to human activities, followed by precipitation. In contrast, evapotranspiration had the least effect. In particular, the MRP-SNWD was a significant anthropogenic factor, contributing to about 20.3% of the total change in runoff. Our results highlighted the unfavorable effects of human activity on the hydrological system in the Hanjiang River and provided some constructive suggestions to turn vulnerability into resilience. Owing to the high energy density, lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted a lot of attention as a representative of new secondary batteries. However, LSBs also face some serious issues in practical applications such as the large volume expansion of S cathode, shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide (LPSs), and dendrite formation of lithium metal anode. In this work, hollow carbon sphere (HCS) was used as a framework, and CoSe2/Se nanorods were uniformly loaded on the HCS surface to form a 3D heterostructured composite (CS/Se/HCS). When used as an active sulfur host, the HCS is conducive to the transport of electrons and Li+; meanwhile, it can suppress the large volume expansion in the electrochemical performance. CoSe2 can effectively adsorb LPSs and accelerate the transformation of LPSs. We also investigated the effect of CoSe2/Se content on the electrochemical performance of the S electrode. Among different CS/Se/HCS samples, the CS/Se/HCS-0.3/S electrode exhibited the best electrochemical performance; at 1C rate, after 500 cycles, it presents a reversible capacity of 511 mA h g−1. Semiconductor photocatalysis technology has attracted much attention because it can directly use solar energy to produce clean hydrogen energy. Among many semiconductor materials, CdS not only has appropriate band positions to meet the redox potential of water splitting, but also has a suitable band gap to bring about excellent visible light absorption performance. Therefore, the research on CdS-based photocatalysts has become a hot topic in recent years, and their development is a significant part of future energy and environment research. However, CdS also has problems such as rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and serious photocorrosion. In this paper, the recent work to improve the photocatalytic efficiency and stability of CdS is reviewed. The synthesis methods and modification strategies of CdS-based semiconductor photocatalysts for H2 evolution in solar energy are reviewed. As a supersonic transportation system, the flow around a vehicle in an Evacuated Tube Transportation (ETT) system will evolve through series of flow structures during acceleration. The occurrence of choked flow and shock wave will especially lead to the drastic change in flow field structures. In this study, based on the one-dimensional inviscid flow assumption, a theoretical model is established to quantitatively describe the formation time, formation location of choked flow, and Frontal Normal Shock Wave (FNSW), as well as the distance of the disturbed flow field region ahead of the vehicle in the ETT system. It is found out that the formation time of FNSW as well as the initial distance between the vehicle head and FNSW is linearly proportional to the blockage ratio while linearly inverse proportional to the acceleration rate of the vehicle. An experimentally verified numerical model is also established with an overset mesh technique to investigate the flow field evolution for vehicles accelerating in the ETT system. The results from numerical analysis agree well with the theoretical model. Meanwhile, five typical flow field structures are summarized for a vehicle accelerating from a stationary state to supersonic state in the ETT system. The applicability of the wind tunnel method and overset mesh technique in numerical simulation of the ETT system is systematically discussed. The influence of occurrence and dissipation of choked flow and shock wave on the vehicle's aerodynamic drag profile are then analyzed quantitatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of high-performance electrocatalysts is critical for the widespread applications of the sustainable energy technologies. In this context, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated metal sites have attracted more attention because of their maximum atom utilization and remarkable electrocatalytic performance. However, the high surface energy often results in a low loading of the single metal atoms, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we give an up-to-date review on the progress for the SACs. The research progress of noble metal SACs, transition metal SACs, single-atom alloy SACs, and double metal SACs is summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of synthesis strategies including wet chemistry, atomic layer deposition, and high-temperature pyrolysis are discussed. We propose a notion of Frobenius-Perron dimension for certain free \mathbb {Z}-modules of infinite rank and compute it for the \mathbb {Z}-modules of finite dimensional complex representations of unitary groups with nonnegative dominant weights. Microecological preparation could relieve Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88-induced diarrhea in piglets, but which bacteria play a key role and the mitigation mechanism have not been fully clarified. In this study, 36 male mice were randomly divided into six groups (CON, K88, BK (Bifidobacterium longum + K88), LK (Lactobacillus plantarum + K88), PK (Pediococcus acidilactici + K88), and MK (mixed strains + K88)) to explore the prevention mechanisms. Three probiotic strains and their mixtures (TPSM) significantly relieved the weight loss and restored the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum. Except for Bifidobacterium longum, other strains significantly decreased interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in mice serum. The TPSM treatment significantly downregulated the mRNA expression of the inflammatory cytokines and the Toll-like receptor and downstream gene (TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB) in jejunum induced by ETEC. Furthermore, the TPSM could restore dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota caused by ETEC. The intestinal microbiota analysis demonstrated that Bifidobacterium longum enriched the Bifidobacterium genus (p < 0.05), Lactobacillus plantarum enriched the Lactobacillus genus (p < 0.05), Pediococcus acidilactici enriched the Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002 and Christensenellaceae_R-7_group genus (p < 0.05), mixed bacteria enriched the Akkermansia genus (p < 0.05), but ETEC enriched the Desulfovibrio genus (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the starch and sucrose metabolism, galactose and fructose metabolism, mannose metabolism and ABC transporters were increased with probiotics pre-treatment (p < 0.05). To sum up, the microecological preparation alleviated ETEC-induced diarrhea by regulating the immune response, rebalancing intestinal microbiota and improving carbohydrate metabolism. In the past few decades, the water resources in the Tang–Bai River Basin showed a declining trend, due to the human–driven alteration of surface water and groundwater management. There are potential risks to the sustainable utilization of future water resources in response to agricultural, industrial, and domestic water supply. In this work, we used the water allocation and regulation model based on SWAT (SWAT–WARM model) to quantify the characteristics of water resources response under human activities in this basin. The multi–source water supply module was modified to improve the applicability of the SWAT–WARM model in this basin. We validated our simulations against observed runoff, water consumption, and supply. The main results were as follows: (a) We used the percent bias, the correlation coefficient, and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient to measure the model validity and found that the modified model did not show obvious advantages in runoff simulations, whereas it reproduced water consumption and supply better than the original model. The modified model had more advantages in reflecting the process of water resources transformation and utilization in the basin driven by strong human activities. (b) By comparing the variation of watershed water circulation fluxes under natural and human disturbance conditions in the Tang–Bai River Basin from 1995 to 2016, we found that human activities increased evapotranspiration by 6.8% and surface runoff increased by 10.0%, while groundwater resources decreased by 0.23 million m3/yr. (c) There was water shortage in the basin at different flow frequencies, among which agricultural water shortage accounted for the largest proportion, >70%. Gas recognition by electronic noses under mixed interference is a challenging problem. We propose correlation analysis for robust gas recognition by calculating the similarity of signals between target gases and mixtures. The gas sensing datasets were clustered according to the values of correlation coefficients with the target gases. The correlation analysis outperformed neural networks and other clustering algorithms on robust gas recognition under mixed interference. The correlation analysis maintained 100% accuracy even with a response change of about 40% up to an interference ratio of 13%. The excellent performance of correlation analysis can be ascribed to its powerful capacity for measuring the similarity between signals via relative variation. Various countries and organizations call for banning the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) as prophylaxis and for growth promotion in the livestock industry. Hence, seeking a substitute for antibiotics is strongly required by the livestock industry to maintain the productivity level and profits. Probiotics could represent one viable solution because of their beneficial effects on host health and maintaining the intestinal microbiota balance. In the present study, we aimed to isolate bacterial strains with probiotics properties from JinHua pig (a Chinese native pig breed) gastrointestinal tract that have antagonistic activity against to common disease-causing bacteria on farms. The four most potent strains were isolated (PP31, BA11, BA40, BV5) by the agar well diffusion method and further characterized by acid, bile salt, trypsin tolerance, whole genome sequencing (WGS), and suppressing Clostridium perfringens adhesion to IPEC-J2 cells. According to these results, BA40 had the highest number and variety of probiotic secondary metabolic secretion genes and capacity to exclude the attachment of Clostridium perfringens to IPEC-J2 cells as same as PB6. The animal experiment in vivo illustrated that BA40 and PB6 could reduce the phenomenon induced by Clostridium perfringens challenge of body weight loss, colon length decrease, pro-inflammatory cytokine increase, and Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli increase. The present study provides evidence that BA40 could represent a novel probiotic candidate as PB6, which exhibited some probiotic features and mitigated the burden of Clostridium perfringens associated gut disease. The analysis of drought propagation has garnered mounting attention in the changing global environment. The current studies tend to focus on the propagation characteristics from meteorological to hydrological drought in rivers. Lakes, despite being a key component of watershed ecosystems, have received little attention to their response to meteorological and hydrological droughts. To this end, here, we investigated the characteristics of propagation from meteorological to hydrological drought for a lake in a changing environment. To determine the drought propagation time from meteorological to hydrological drought, we analyzed correlations between the standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized runoff index (SRI), and standardized water level index (SWI). Lake Baiyangdian in China served as the case study. The results showed that meteorological droughts occur at high frequency but are short in duration, indicating that not every meteorological drought will necessarily lead to a hydrological drought. By contrast, lake hydrological droughts have low frequency and long duration and feature more severe consequences. Comparing drought characteristics before and after a changing environment, we found a reduced frequency of the SPI, SRI, and SWI, yet their duration was prolonged. For the SWI especially, these results were even more pronounced, which suggests the changing environment enabled further intensification of the lake hydrological drought. Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, some intractable issues such as "shuttle effect", low electronic conductivity and large volume change of the S cathode seriously limit their application. In this work, a composite of Ni/Ni3N heterojunction-decorated hollow carbon nanotubes (Ni/Ni3N–CNT) was fabricated and used as a sulfur host, meanwhile, the mechanism of Ni/Ni3N heterojunctions in inhibiting the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) was investigated in detail. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental conclusions reveal that the Ni/Ni3N heterojunctions promote the nucleation and growth of Li2S2/Li2S and accelerate the redox process of LiPSs. Consequently, the Ni/Ni3N–CNT/S electrode demonstrates satisfactory electrochemical performance. It delivers a superior reversible capacity of 643.3 mA h g−1 at 5C rate with an average decay rate of 0.10% per cycle over 400 cycles. Besides it can present a specific capacity of 439.7 mA h g−1 with a high S loading of 5.0 mg cm−2 after 100 cycles. Most importantly, this work proposes a simple method for the preparation of Ni/Ni3N heterostructures which can be used as reversible catalytic micro-reaction centers for LiPSs. The relatively low operating voltage window is the main factor limiting the energy density of aqueous energy storage devices. The delicate design of heterostructured electrode materials can efficiently increase the intrinsic electrochemical performance through synergistic effects. For the first time, to broaden the voltage window of aqueous supercapacitors the synergistic effect between boroncarbonitrides (BCN) and built‐in electric field existing in heterostructures is designed to utilize. Based on this design concept, MnO/MnS@BCN electrode materials are synthesized, in which the synergistic effect can effectively strengthen the storage of electrolyte ions on the electrode surface, thus inhibiting the electrolysis of H2O and eventually broadening the voltage window of aqueous supercapacitor. In MnO/MnS@BCN‐based symmetrical supercapacitors, the voltage window of the device is extended from 1.2 V (single‐component) to 2 V, with the energy density enhanced to 75.0 W h kg−1. Of great importance is modeling for transducer design and application to predict its performance and simulate key characteristics. The equivalent circuit modeling (ECM), one of the most powerful tools, has been widely used in the transducer industry and academia due to its outstanding merits of low simulation cost and easy usage for multi-field simulation in both time and frequency domains. Nevertheless, most of the existing equivalent circuit models for Terfenol-D transducers normally ignore three material losses, namely elastic loss, piezomagnetic loss, and magnetic loss. Additionally, the magnetic leakage due to the intrinsic poor magnetic permeability of Terfenol-D is rarely considered into the piezomagnetic coupling. Both loss effects will produce substantial errors. Therefore, an improved SPICE model for a high-power Terfenol-D transducer considering the aforementioned three losses and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is proposed in this article, which is implemented on the platform of LTspice software. To verify the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed technique, a high-power Terfenol-D tonpilz transducer prototype with a resonance frequency of around 1 kHz and a maximum transmitting current response (TCR) of 187.1 dB/1A/ $\mu $ Pa is built and tested. The experimental results, both in the air and water of the transducer, are in excellent agreement with the simulated results, which well validates our proposed modeling methods. Complex material parameters that can represent the losses of giant magnetostrictive materials (GMMs) are the key parameters for high-power transducer design and performance analysis. Since the GMMs work under pre-stress conditions and their performance is highly sensitive to pre-stress, the complex parameters of a GMM are preferably characterized in a specific pre-stress condition. In this study, an optimized characterization method for GMMs is proposed using three complex material parameters. Firstly, a lumped parameter model is improved for a longitudinal transducer by incorporating three material losses. Then, the structural damping and contact damping are experimentally measured and applied to confine the parametric variance ranges. Using the improved lumped parameter model, the real parts of the three key material parameters are characterized by fitting the experimental impedance data while the imaginary parts are separately extracted by the phase data. The global sensitivity analysis that accounts for the interaction effects of the multiple parameter variances shows that the proposed method outperforms the classical method as the sensitivities of all the six key parameters to both impedance and phase fitness functions are all high, which implies that the extracted material complex parameters are credible. The "shuttle effect", tardy reaction kinetics and volume change of sulfur cathode limit the wide application of Li-S batteries (LSBs). In this work, a composite of flower-like CoOOH decorating hierarchical porous carbon (CoOOH-HPC) was successfully synthesized and utilized as a sulfur host for LSBs. SEM and TEM images exhibited that the flower-like CoOOH formed by nanosheets was uniformly dispersed on the hierarchical porous carbon which was constructed by carbon spheres and nanotubes. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm and pore size distribution revealed that the ultrahigh specific surface area and suitable uniform mesopores of the CoOOH-HPC. Benefitting from the perfect combination of CoOOH and HPC, the CoOOH-HPC/S electrode delivered satisfactory electrochemical performance. It remained a discharge capacity of 550.9 mA h g−1 after 270 cycles at 0.5 C, with a low capacity decay rate of 0.017 % per cycle and a stable coulombic efficiency (over 96 %). Besides, the CoOOH-HPC/S electrode with a high sulfur loading of 2.8 mg cm−2 can demonstrate a discharge capacity of 357.91 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles, with the capacity decay rate of 0.08 % per cycle. This work provided a new method for preparing a variety of metal-based compound decorative hierarchical porous carbon composites, which can be used in LSBs and other energy storage and conversion devices. Analysis of the laminate's perforation resistance and the damage behavior is challenging due to the complex physical and geometric configurations. This work studied the mechanical behaviors both of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) beam and square plate under transverse local load, including quasi-static indentation load and impact load. High-speed photography and non-invasive damage detective methods were used to capture specimens' dynamic deformation, damage process, and resultant damage. Experiment results indicate that the CFRP specimens of the beam shape show higher perforation resistance as well as more damage patterns than that of the square shape. In addition, it was validated through numerical simulations by considering the strain-rate effect with rate-dependent constitutive model compiled through subroutine VUMAT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
