Flexible direct current (DC) grids face a serious challenge in terms of rapidly isolating DC faults. A DC circuit breaker is an effective solution for DC fault isolation. To improve the fault-isolation and reclosing capability of flexible DC systems, a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breaker topology with adaptive reclosing capability is proposed in this paper. The topology of the circuit breaker is a T-shaped structure, which has the ability to break the current in both directions and effectively reduce the cost of components. Meanwhile, after the fault is cleared, the circuit breaker is controlled to inject a voltage signal into the line. Based on this, to prevent the circuit breaker reclosing in the event of a permanent fault from having an impact on the system, a method for fault identification based on Euclidean distance that uses the voltage signal to identify the fault properties is proposed. Finally, the performance of the circuit breaker is simulated and verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software, and compared with the typical existing circuit breakers to verify the effectiveness of the circuit breaker and reclosing scheme. This paper proposes a ± 535 kV hybrid high voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breaker. In this paper, the interruption processes of the main branch, transferring branch, and MOV (metal oxide varistors) branch are studied by PSCAD/EMTDC computer simulation. Simulation results indicate that an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) in the main branch will withstand the highest electrical stress (3305 V/2200 A) and the IGBT in the transferring branch will withstand the highest voltage stress (3327 V). Finally, the ± 535 kV hybrid HVDC circuit breaker prototype is manufactured; the test is carried out. Test results suggest that the ± 535 kV hybrid HVDC circuit breaker prototype developed for the Zhangbei four‐terminal voltage source converter (VSC)‐HVDC project can interrupt a ± 25 kA (high current) within 2.84 ms. The simulation results agreed very well with the actual test results of our novel ± 535 kV hybrid HVDC circuit breaker. The novel ± 535 kV hybrid HVDC circuit breaker functioned exceptionally well in achieving fast short‐circuit current isolation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DC circuit breaker is the key equipment to deal with the interruption of short-circuit current. Compared with the mechanical switch, the solid circuit breaker and the hybrid circuit breaker using the semiconductor device to interrupt the short-circuit current exhibit superiorities in response duration and arc-less characteristics. Massive power devices controlled by corresponding gate drivers which make the semiconductors-based dc circuit breaker bulky and costly are required to withstand the high dc-bus voltage. In this article, the master−slave concept based modular circuit breaker is proposed to simplify the gate driver topology. Only one single gate driver is required to control highly compact modular submodules consisting of power devices, passive components, and diodes. Moreover, the proposed topology can be easily implemented with high flexibility and low cost. Specifically, the gate control function and voltage equalization for series-connected devices can be realized reliably. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breaker development and deployment strongly depend on the testing process, which ensures that the HVDC circuit breakers will satisfy design requirements. This article presents an HVDC circuit breaker test bench circuit configuration that can provide controllable large output currents to simulate different fault conditions for the current breaking test and high output voltage for the dielectric withstand test. The current breaking test circuit is based on multiple cascaded power converters connected in parallel to provide the necessary output current capability. Each cascaded power converter is composed of multiple cells that are operated by a phase-shifted pulsewidth-modulated signal for greater controllability and higher quality of the output waveform. The dielectric withstand test circuit is a simple high-voltage source with a low power rating that can also be used to charge the test bench and the internal circuitry of the circuit breaker that is to be tested. The proposed test bench ensures that fault conditions can be replicated accurately and offers greater flexibility by being able to test mechanical, semiconductor-based, or hybrid HVDC circuit breakers with different current and voltage ratings on the same hardware without any changes. The idea and the operating principle of the proposed test bench are verified experimentally on a downscaled system that consists of three cascaded power converters connected in parallel with three cells per cascaded power converter and with a total equivalent switching frequency of 92.5 kHz. To improve the reliability of power supply, reclosing schemes are required after transient faults, which commonly occur in overhead line based high voltage DC (HVDC) systems. However, in the event of permanent faults, the auto-reclosing scheme may cause a severe strike. To avoid the severe impacts caused by permanent faults, the fault type should be discriminated before activating the reclosing scheme. Therefore, an adaptive reclosing scheme based on phase characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the modulation of a periodic voltage by actively controlling the hybrid DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is introduced. Then, a cascaded π equivalent model and its decoupling algorithm are presented to analyze the frequency-domain characteristics of the measured impedance of the coupled overhead lines. From the frequency-domain characteristics, the frequency of the periodic detecting voltage is determined to analyze the phase features of the measured impedance at primary frequency. The permanent or transient faults can thus be accurately identified by using these different phase characteristics, with negligible influence on the healthy lines. Series multi‐break mechanical switch is one of the critical components of high‐voltage hybrid DC circuit breakers. However, due to the existence of distributed capacitance, the voltage distribution between the breaks is not balanced. This paper proposed a voltage sharing configuration method of the mechanical switch of hybrid DC circuit breaker, and carried out the static DC voltage and the transient voltage distribution characteristics tests to verify its effectiveness. Considering the influence of whole structure of the circuit breaker, this paper established the electrostatic field model and circuit simulation model of a typical ±535‐kV hybrid DC circuit breaker. And it analyzed the influence of single break's opening fault, breaking open distance, and the shielding fitting on the voltage distribution characteristics of series six break mechanical switch. According to the simulation results based on the Zhangbei voltage source converter‐based high‐voltage direct current project type test parameters, the parameters design of the voltage sharing components of the mechanical switch are obtained, which can meet the voltage sharing coefficient requirement of 95%. Long pulse gas lasers utilizing double-discharge circuits are different from the single-short pulse gas lasers in that they do not require all of the desired energy to be deposited into the peaking capacitors prior to ignition of the main gap. Instead, the majority of the energy is held in another capacitor that is then discharged in the form of a longer duration discharge pulse output compared with that of single-short pulse lasers. Extended stability of the discharge is typically achieved by igniting the main gap discharge at higher ignition voltages. Several double-discharge circuit topologies exist in the literature. However, each topology has its own disadvantages primarily centered around the components needed and the resulting complexity. In this article we introduce the application of the new hybrid circuit pulsed power topology as a double-discharge circuit with high ignition voltages. The hybrid circuit pulsed power topology was originally published by the authors of this article in their previous publication titled “A New Hybrid Pulsed Power Circuit Topology for Gas Laser Applications.” The advantage of the hybrid circuit as a double-discharge circuit is that it does not require any special device [e.g., semiconductor opening switch (SOS) diode] and can use commonly available components. • A CAOC-MPHDCB is proposed by combining with the principle of controllable active oscillation and the MPHDCB based on negative voltage source, which can not only greatly cut down the total cost and operation loss, but also reduce the insulation requirement of commutation circuit. The CAOC only needs an energy storage capacitor to store several kV pre-charge voltage, and can generate a high voltage on a pulse capacitor after several oscillations. Like a NVS, the CAOC can generate a negative voltage on the transfer branch to accelerate the current commutating from the main branch into the transfer branch. In addition, the IGBT full-bridge in the CAOC only needs to withstand the pre-charge voltage with low amplitude at any time. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of CAOC-MPHDCB, and shows its great application prospect in the field of HVDC interruption. The hybrid high voltage DC circuit breaker (HDCB) is widely regarded as the most promising solution to the fault current interruption of VSC-based DC grids. However, because of a large number of power electronic modules connected in series in transfer branch, the cost of existing HDCBs are pretty high, which limiting their large-scale commercial application. In this paper, a novel multi-port hybrid high voltage DC circuit breaker commutated by controllable active oscillation circuit (CAOC-MPHDCB) is proposed. Based on the principle of controllable active oscillation, the proposed CAOC-MPHDCB can realize the reliable commutation and fast interruption of fault current while significantly reducing the total cost and operation loss. In addition, the CAOC-MPHDCB can not only isolate line faults that occur continuously in a short time, but also maintain system ring-network structure after isolating the faulty DC bus. The influencing mechanism of parameters on the performance of CAOC-MPHDCB are analysed in detail, and the selection methods of corresponding parameters are obtained. • The equivalent discharging circuit of the hybrid cascaded LCC/MMC inverter is simplified into a first-order RL circuit by assuming the firing-advance angle is constant after the fault. • The mathematical fault current expressions of the hybrid cascaded LCC/MMC high voltage direct current system are analyzed. • By changing the inserted sequence of submodules, an active fault current limiting strategy based on the submodule sorting algorithm is proposed. • The proposed active current limiting strategy can cooperate with other current limiting strategies to further suppress the fault current. The hybrid cascaded LCC/MMC high voltage direct current (HC-HVDC) system is a prospective topology that can avoid the commutation failure problem of LCC-HVDC while ensuring bulk power transmission capability. However, the complex topology results in different DC fault characteristics at the receiving end, which brings challenges to fault detection and current limiting technology. As a result, it is of great theoretical importance to investigate the fault characteristics of the HC-HVDC system and propose the corresponding fault current limiting strategy. Firstly, this paper simplifies the equivalent discharging circuit of the hybrid cascaded LCC/MMC inverter into a first-order RL circuit by assuming the firing-advance angle is constant after fault, and proposes the fault current expressions by Laplace transform. Secondly, by changing the insertion sequence of submodules, an active fault current limiting strategy based on the submodule sorting algorithm (SMS-FCL) is proposed, which can accomplish fault current suppression, reactive power and DC voltage support, and energy loss reduction simultaneously. Moreover, the proposed SMS-FCL can cooperate with other FCLs to further suppress the fault current, and the cooperation prerequisites are analyzed. Finally, an LCC-LCC/MMC HVDC system is built in PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the accuracy of the proposed fault current expressions and the effectiveness of the current limiting strategy. One of the technical challenges that needs to be addressed for the future of the multi-terminal high voltage direct current (M-HVDC) grid is DC fault isolation. In this regard, HVDC circuit breakers (DCCBs), particularly hybrid circuit breakers (H-DCCBs), are paramount. The H-DCCB, proposed by the ABB, has the potential to ensure a reliable and safer grid operation, mainly due to its millisecond-level current interruption capability and lower on-state losses as compared to electromechanical and solid-state based DCCBs. This paper aims to study and evaluate the operational parameters, e.g., electrical, and thermal stresses on the IGBT valves and energy absorbed by the surge arrestors within H-DCCB during different DC fault scenarios. A comprehensive set of modeling requirements matching with operational conditions are developed. A meshed four-terminal HVDC test bench consisting of twelve H-DCCBs is designed in PSCAD/EMTDC to study the impacts of the M-HVDC grid on the operational parameters of H-DCCB. Thus, the system under study is tested for different current interruption scenarios under a (i) low impedance fault current and (ii) high impedance fault current. Given the current evolution of Voltage Source Converters (VSC), Multi-Terminal High Voltage Direct Current (MTDC) grids are now becoming a real possibility. Still, some technical issues have to be addressed. The protection of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids is the main technical challenge that is slowing down the development of MTDC grids. Hence, this paper focuses on protection systems. Thus, protection devices, fault-clearing strategies and protection system requirements are considered. The main topic of this paper is the review of different types of protection methods for MTDC systems that are shown in the literature. They can be classified depending on the use of local measurements or a communication channel in their operation. The protection systems reviewed in this paper include protection systems based on current measurements, voltage measurement, traveling wave analysis and artificial intelligence. A protection system can employ only one of these methods or a combination of them. Finally, the main characteristics of the reviewed protection algorithms are compared, highlighting the system configuration, the converter technology, the adopted fault-clearing strategy, the implemented circuit breakers and the size of the limiting inductors. From the work presented in this paper, it is concluded that the actual tendency in MTDC protection systems is predominantly full-selective fault-clearing strategies combined with hybrid HVDC circuit breakers in series with limiting inductors.
