Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is a conifer historically associated with an open forest ecosystem that extended across much of the coastal plain of the Southeastern United States. It now exists mainly in isolated fragments following the conversion of forests and the long-term disruption of the low-intensity fire regime upon which the species depends. Recent decades have seen efforts to restore longleaf pine forests by government and private landowners. This was reflected in analyses of national forest inventory data during two time periods, ca. 2009–2015 and 2016–2021, that showed increases in the estimated number of longleaf pine trees, the area of the longleaf pine forest type, and the number and area of planted longleaf pine, along with growth in mean plot-level longleaf pine carbon and importance value. At the same time, we found a decrease in the overall forest area containing longleaf pine, manifested across a variety of other forest types. These results point to a dynamic through which forests dominated by longleaf pine are becoming more widespread via restoration, while forests in which the species is a less important component are transitioning to other forest types or land uses. We also detected a decrease over time in the estimated number of longleaf seedlings across most states and forest types and a decline in naturally regenerated longleaf pine. To further assess regeneration trends in longleaf pine, we calculated the estimated proportion of small trees (seedlings and saplings) for the entire species and for seed zone sub-populations. We found a species-wide decrease in the proportion of small trees, from 82.1 percent to 75.1 percent. This reduction was most pronounced along the edges of the species distribution and could indicate less sustainable levels of regeneration in some areas. Globally, animals that are range-restricted are frequently becoming species of conservation concern, in part due to competitive exclusion by phylogenetically and ecologically similar species that are more tolerant of human disturbance. However, climate and land use changes to natural landscapes can create pockets of refugia for range-restricted species. Western gray squirrels (Sciurus griseus) are native to the west coast of North America, principally California and western Oregon. Over the past several decades, Western Gray Squirrel populations have declined in human-dominated areas, with increased competition from introduced congeneric species native to eastern North America cited as a primary driver. Despite declines in their established range west of the Pacific Crest in western North America, western gray squirrels are extending their range into the Great Basin, where they were not historically found. Using a network of remote camera traps deployed across the Sierra Nevada–Great Basin ecotone in northwestern Nevada, we detected western gray squirrels across 16 of 100 camera-trapping sites. The majority of detections were located in piñon–juniper woodland, a land cover type not previously occupied by this species. Occupancy modeling revealed that western gray squirrels were equally likely to occur in piñon–juniper woodland compared to mature pine forest that they occupy elsewhere in their range. A species distribution model parameterized with historical gray squirrel observations (pre-1950), indicated increased climatic suitability for the species on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in recent decades, which may have facilitated this range expansion. Our findings reveal the potential for species declining in their historical range to colonize novel habitats that become increasingly suitable as a result of human-driven changes to ecosystems. Drought‐induced groundwater decline and warming associated with climate change are primary threats to dryland riparian woodlands. We used the extreme 2012–2019 drought in southern California as a natural experiment to assess how differences in water‐use strategies and groundwater dependence may influence the drought susceptibility of dryland riparian tree species with overlapping distributions. We analyzed tree‐ring stable carbon and oxygen isotopes collected from two cottonwood species (Populus trichocarpa and P. fremontii) along the semi‐arid Santa Clara River. We also modeled tree source water δ18O composition to compare with observed source water δ18O within the floodplain to infer patterns of groundwater reliance. Our results suggest that both species functioned as facultative phreatophytes that used shallow soil moisture when available but ultimately relied on groundwater to maintain physiological function during drought. We also observed apparent species differences in water‐use strategies and groundwater dependence related to their regional distributions. P. fremontii was constrained to more arid river segments and ostensibly used a greater proportion of groundwater to satisfy higher evaporative demand. P. fremontii maintained ∆13C at pre‐drought levels up until the peak of the drought, when trees experienced a precipitous decline in ∆13C. This response pattern suggests that trees prioritized maintaining photosynthetic processes over hydraulic safety, until a critical point. In contrast, P. trichocarpa showed a more gradual and sustained reduction in ∆13C, indicating that drought conditions induced stomatal closure and higher water use efficiency. This strategy may confer drought avoidance for P. trichocarpa while increasing its susceptibility to anticipated climate warming. Monitoring the dynamics of land use and land cover (LULC) is imperative in the changing climate and evolving urbanization patterns worldwide. The shifts in land use have a significant impact on the hydrological response of watersheds across the globe. Several studies have applied machine learning (ML) algorithms using historical LULC maps along with elevation data and slope for predicting future LULC projections. However, the influence of other driving factors such as socio-economic and climatological factors has not been thoroughly explored. In the present study, a sensitivity analysis approach was adopted to understand the effect of both physical (elevation, slope, aspect, etc.) and socio-economic factors such as population density, distance to built-up, and distance to road and rail, as well as climatic factors (mean precipitation) on the accuracy of LULC prediction in the Brahmani and Baitarni (BB) basin of Eastern India. Additionally, in the absence of the recent LULC maps of the basin, three ML algorithms, i.e., random forest (RF), classified and regression trees (CART), and support vector machine (SVM) were utilized for LULC classification for the years 2007, 2014, and 2021 on Google earth engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. Among the three algorithms, RF performed best for classifying built-up areas along with all the other classes as compared to CART and SVM. The prediction results revealed that the proximity to built-up and population growth dominates in modeling LULC over physical factors such as elevation and slope. The analysis of historical data revealed an increase of 351% in built-up areas over the past years (2007–2021), with a corresponding decline in forest and water areas by 12% and 36% respectively. While the future predictions highlighted an increase in built-up class ranging from 11 to 38% during the years 2028–2070, the forested areas are anticipated to decline by 4 to 16%. The overall findings of the present study suggested that the BB basin, despite being primarily agricultural with a significant forest cover, is undergoing rapid expansion of built-up areas through the encroachment of agricultural and forested lands, which could have far-reaching implications for the region's ecosystem services and sustainability. Soil erosion poses an environmental threat to the ecosystem functions. Land use and land cover (LULC) changes are largely responsible for soil erosion severity. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of LULC on soil erosion and erosion distribution in the Laonung watershed over the study period (1995–2016). To model the response of soil erosion to LULC changes, a physiographic soil erosion–deposition (PSED) model is employed, which incorporates Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with rain-runoff models and erosion–deposition models. The results revealed that over a three period (1995, 2008 and 2011), agricultural land, grassland, bare land, water bodies, and other land uses increased, whereas forest land declined by 11,424 × 104 m2 (2008 relative to 1995) and 16,159 × 104 m2 (2011 relative to 1995). In addition to the land use, landslide was considered as a land cover in this study. As landslides dramatically alter the land cover dynamics of mountainous regions in Taiwan. The landslide areas substantial changed over the period 2003 to 2016 (847 × 104 m2–9474 × 104 m2). The significant increase in landslide area together with the abrupt dynamics in LU severely aggravated soil erosion. Compared with the period of primeval forest, total soil erosion increased from 29,295 × 104 m3 to 102,597 × 104 m3 (1995–2011 LU) and 205,833 × 104 m3 (LULC). Forest discourses help identify forest-related issues. They aim to aid policy and decision-makers in understanding forest-related challenges and opportunities better so that they may initiate possible strategies and tactics to tackle them. Ideally, information requirements for the forest discourses would be translated into measurable variables, being the basis for collecting, analysing, and reporting data and information. Our study examined the connection between major international forest reporting processes and forest discourses. We analysed summaries and key findings for policy makers of five recent major forest reports. We compared their focus with forest discourses on climate change, forest conservation, deforestation, forest decline, illegal logging, industrial forestry/bioeconomy, traditional knowledge, woody biomass production, and innovative wood-based biofuels. The paper explores how the forest discourses are reflected in the surveyed documents and closely examines the specific focus areas in the summaries for policy makers. The results show that most forest discourses are generally well-represented, albeit with different foci. The discourse on illegal logging could not be identified in any investigated documents, even though it remains a significant concern for international forest policy. Keywords related to traditional knowledge and woody biomass production could not be found in two of the analysed findings. All analysed summaries and key findings mention issues related to the climate change discourse topic. However, they lack information on emissions from deforestation, carbon dioxide emissions and carbon budgets, which are high in political discussions. The paper highlights how discourse issues have gained in complexity both topic-wise and regarding the reporting obligations, as policy and decisionmakers require more timely and comprehensive information about the status' and trends of forests. The urbanization has been changing the pattern of land use, and at the same time has affected the amount of carbon stored in the carbon pools of terrestrial ecosystem so that the ecosystem' s regulating power has been declined, which is directly related to the supply of urban ecosystem service values, and the land use planning. Therefore, for the purpose of sustainable development in the process of urban development, it is of great significance to make clear the spatio-temporal changes of ecosystem carbon storage and the evolution of land use; however, in current relevant studies, a single land use/cover (LULC) dataset is usually used to estimate carbon stocks, so that the results of those studies come to be rather uncertain. Hence, in this study the integrated valuation model of ecosystem services and the trade-offs (InVEST) model are utilized, combining with the multiple commonly-used LULC datasets, to explore the impact of dataset selection on carbon stock estimation and land use type evolution in a typical city, e.g., Chongqing City, in order to better reflect the spatial and temporal changes in carbon stocks and the type of land use evolution during the city' s urban development. As a result, the study presents that the LULC change in Chongqing over the past 10 years is rather severe than before, and a large amount of cultivated land shifted to forest land or construction land, and compared with the years 2000-2010, during 2010-2020 the average area of cultivated land transferred to construction land is more than 400 km²; the carbon storage estimated by different datasets varies slightly, and the estimated storage was between 972.08~1 069.70 Tg C (1012 g C), the closer the area to the main city zone, the more remarkable decline in carbon storage, and the carbon storage of the main city zone decreased by (2.8±0.6) Tg C during the past 20 years. In addition, the study reveals that in the process of rapid urban development, the evolution of land use pattern rather accelerated, so more attention should be paid to ecological environmental protection, strictly adhering to the red line of land use. Summarily, the achievement of the study could offer a data support for urban land resource management, being conducive to formulating more scientific land resource management planning. While driving regional economic development, coal mining also causes environmental problems. Changes in land use are associated with mining impact vegetation's net primary productivity (NPP). This, in turn, can impact vegetation's carbon fixation capacity. Understanding how these impacts operate can inform vegetation restoration efforts in former mining areas and preserve ecological stability. In this paper, the NPP of the study area from 2000 to 2019 was retrieved based on the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of NPP of the study area were discussed. Meanwhile, combined with the land-use data of the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2000, 2010, and 2019, the impact of land-use changes on regional vegetation NPP was discussed from the perspective of landscape ecology. The results showed that the CASA model using inverted NPP data gave results that compared favorably with data measured in the field. The annual average vegetation NPP in the study area during the study period was 44.51 g C m−2 a−1. NPP changes showed considerable spatial heterogeneity, but the same overall trends in fluctuation. The study area experienced a decline in both forested and grassland area from 2000 to 2010. The NPP of all four land types decreased. Forested and other land types increased from 2010 to 2019, and the NPP of all four categories increased. Land-use changes over the study period of two decades promoted NPP growth, contributing 44.66% and 93.9%, respectively. Except for the aggregation index, landscape pattern indices showed a positive correlation with NPP. NPP values in 2000, 2010, and 2019 all increased, showing the highest ranked principal components based on landscape indices. The NPP in the study area strongly depends on human activities. Maintaining the current vegetation status would increase NPP in the study area and enhance the vegetation's carbon fixation capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background--Ecological industrialization takes ecological resources as the main research subject and realizes the economic value of ecological products and services by means of socialized production and market-oriented operation. (2) Methods--The weights of each index in the evaluation index system of ecological industrialization development level were determined according to entropy weight method, and the development level of ecological industrialization was measured by entropy weight TOP SIS model. (3) Results--First, the overall development level of ecological industrialization of the state-owned forest areas in Heilongjiang Province was low from 2001 to 2008, and the development index of other system levels was low except for the high development index of ecological environment quality. Due to the implementation of a series of ecological projects, the development index of ecological industrialization from 2009 to 2018 began to improve, and the development index of the four system levels also began to increase. Affected by the system transformation of Yichun Forest Industry Group and the COVID-19 pandemic, the development index of ecological industrialization from 2019 to 2021 began to decline. In addition to the continuous increase in the ecological environment quality level, the development index of the other three system levels declined. Second, the obstacle degree of each system level of ecological industrialization of the state-owned forest areas in Heilongjiang Province showed a trend of fluctuation decline from 2001 to 2018. Except for ecological environment quality level, the obstacle degree of the other system levels increased from 2019 to 2021. There were 17 obstacle factors affecting the development level of ecological industrialization, among which the average obstacle degree of forest resource index, pollution management index, industrial structure index and output value of pillar industry was the highest. (4) Conclusions and Discussions--First, the development level of ecological industrialization of the state-owned forest areas in Heilongjiang Province showed a fluctuating upward trend from 2001 to 2021, and the development level of ecological industrialization was constantly improving. Second, the change trend of the development level of the system level of ecological industrialization was different. The development level of the ecological environment quality continued to rise, while the development level of the other three system levels fluctuated first and then continued to decline. Third, the change of system level obstacle degree affecting the development of ecological industrialization had phases. The obstacle degree of ecological environment quality was the largest from 2001 to 2018, and the pillar industry level became the new main obstacle factor from 2018 to 2021. Fourth, the distribution of indexes restricting the development of ecological industrialization of the state-owned forest areas in Heilongjiang province was uneven in each system level. Forest resources, pollution management, industrial structure and output value of pillar industries were the main obstacle factors. According to the above research conclusions, the following policy recommendations are put forward: First, give priority to protection and improve the quality of the ecological environment. Second, optimize the industrial layout and improve the regional economic level. Third, extend the industrial chain and improve the level of pillar industries. Rapid urbanization in Algeria is causing significant problems, such as the emergence of unplanned neighborhoods, and local authorities need to apply modern tools like geomatics to monitor and update spatial planning databases to support sustainable development. More to the point, these tools—geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) are of assistance to update the spatial planning and development database so as to support the decision-making. In fact, for understanding the purpose of the process of urban growth in the region of the interior high plateaus, we chose the city of Setif as it represents an urban and economic pole in the region. Besides, economic activities exacerbate the phenomenon of rapid and unplanned urban growth alongside the environmental impact thereof. In the light of the obtained results, there exists a significant increase in urban lands and a significant decline in forests and agricultural lands, as the urban area has tripled from 10.4% in 1985 to 20.3 in 2003 and to 29.7% in 2021. At the same time, the agricultural area has then shrunk from 76.4% in 1985 to 65.8 in 2003 and to 55.5% in 2021, while the forest areas have decreased from 5.04% in 1985 to 4.4 in 2003 and to 2.3% in 2021. The impact of climate change on insect pests is an emerging topic in forestry and forest science. This study investigates the relationships between two broadleaved forest pests – spongy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) and brown-tail moth (Euproctis chrysorrhoea L.) – and oaks (Quercus sp.) as their hosts. Oak forests cover almost one-third of the total forest area of Serbia and are ecologicallyvery valuable, but at the same time vulnerable, as being affected in adverse ways by several primary pests and pathogens. Since 1862, Serbia experienced several extremely large outbreaks of spongy moth with more than a hundred thousand hectares completely defoliated each time, while brown-tail moth occurred periodically with a much lower spatial extent. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of UV radiation (UVR) and air temperature on spongy moth and brown-tail moth in Serbian forests. We used simulations of the coupled regional climate model EBU-POM (Eta Belgrade University-Princeton Ocean Model) for the A1B scenario for the period 2001-2030 as main input and different statistical methods to explore relationships between observations of pest spread and climate change impacts. Our results suggest (i) increasing the areas affected by spongy moth due to its sensitivity on UVR in May, and (ii) altitudinal spreading of brown-tail moth population up to 800 – 1000 m. This research indicates that in situ forest observations in Serbia are not only affected by climate change, but also by the combined effect of climate on forest pests. For further research, we recommend exploring other forest stressors or dieback phenomena in European forests by applying the same or similar regional climate model dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last half-century, North American forest birds have experienced staggering declines, while at the same time, many metrics indicate that North American forest health has improved. While the United States has been recognised for global leadership in innovation and research in forestry, the negative impacts of high-severity harvesting methods and forest fragmentation are sometimes overlooked, and a dearth of research studies exist that assess the impacts of lower-severity forestry practices on birds. Globally, some regions are pursuing markedly different forestry practices, and one example is Europe's Close-To-Nature Forestry (CTNF) that protects forest canopies. Historically, CTNF methods have not been promoted to help avian abundance or diversity; however, forest bird populations in Europe have increased 7% over the last two decades, and we posit whether similar forest management approaches in the eastern USA could benefit North American birds. Therefore, we sought to 1) assess the effects of forest structural characteristics on avian species richness in a CTNFmanaged forest in the eastern USA; 2) compare our results to county-level eBird data to identify the challenges of assessing the impacts of forestry practices on birds at landscape scales; 3) highlight the ambiguities in current forest management guidelines for improving avian habitats in the USA and 4) suggest long-term direction for evaluating the impacts of alternative forest management practices on birds. Our case study provides preliminary evidence that CTNF-managed forests may support diverse birds of high conservation value that are normally drawn to different forest management extremes. We also provide recommendations for utilising eBird data to assess alternative forest management strategies at landscape scales and a synthesised look at the forest management guidelines provided by many of the major players in American ornithology. While there may be multiple reasons for forest bird declines noted in the past 50 years in North America, long-standing forest management practices and policies should not be overlooked. As one of the most serious health issues facing trees, the occurrence of decay and hollowing not only reduces the stability and quality of living trees but also leads to the deterioration of their eco-physiological functions, which creates great challenges to the conservation and sustainable management of forest resources. In recent years, the study of tree decay and hollow rot have attracted more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad. The relevant research results have a great significance for the prevention and control of affected living trees and the conservation and sustainable management of endangered species. However, there is a lack of systematic literature review and an insufficient understanding of research hotspots and trends in this field. This paper selects literature retrieved from the CNKI and Web of Science core databases as data sources, the number of publications, research topics, research status, hot spots, and trends, as well as the main research countries, institutions, and co-cited authors in the field of tree decay are visualized by using bibliometrics software CiteSpace (V.5.8.R3), and the current international research hotspots and development trends in this field were systematically summarized. The results showed that the number of papers in this field at home and abroad showed rapid growth in general, and the number of Chinese papers showed a slow growth after 2009. The number of papers published in English by Chinese authors was more than the number of papers published in Chinese in the field. From 2002 to 2021, the research hotspots in this field are constantly changing. Cluster analysis shows that the main themes of the relevant research are as follows: "Eastern Canada" tree species, "hydraulic vulnerability segmentation", "dead wood management", and "hydraulic safety". The advantages and disadvantages of hollow/dead wood on forest ecosystems were explored from different perspectives, providing a theoretical basis and scientific support for the forest health and sustainable management. The United States dominates the research in this field, while China is a relatively late comer but is catching up fast, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the most prolific publisher on this topic in China. The influence of Chinese research in this field on relevant international publications is gradually increasing. In short, the research in this field is still in the phase of rapid development, and both the breadth and depth of quantitative research are increasing. How to accurately diagnose and quantify the internal decay of tree trunks and its relationship with tree death and forest decline under the interference and pressure of climate change and human activities is still a hot and difficult issue in this field. The management of regional eco-environmental risks is the key to promoting regional economic sustainability from the macro level, and accurate evaluation of the evolutionary trends of regional ecological risk in the future is of high importance. In order to clearly identify the possible impact of future development scenario selection for the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone (C-C E Zone) on the evolution of landscape ecological risk (LER), we introduced the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model to simulate land use data for the C-C E Zone from 2030 to 2050 for two scenarios: natural development (ND) and ecological protection (EP). Based on the ecological grid and landscape ecological risk index (LERI) model, the landscape ecological risk (LER) evolutionary trends seen in the C-C E Zone from 2000 to 2050 were analyzed and identified. The results showed that: (1) The PLUS model can obtain high-precision simulation results in the C-C E Zone. In the future, the currently increasing rate of land being used for construction will be reduced, the declining rates of forest and cultivated land area will also be reduced, and the amount of land being used for various purposes will remain stable going into the future. (2) This study found that the optimal size of the ecological grid in the LERI calculation of the mountainous area was 4 × 4 km. Additionally, the mean values of the LERI in 2030, 2040, and 2050 were 0.1612, 0.1628, and 0.1636 for ND and 0.1612, 0.1618, and 0.1620 for EP. (3) The hot spot analysis results showed that an area of about 49,700 km2 in the C-C E Zone from 2000 to 2050 belongs to high agglomeration of LER. (4) Since 2010, the proportions of high and extremely high risk levels have continued to increase, but under the EP scenario, the high and extremely high risk levels in 2040 and 2050 decreased from 14.36% and 6.66% to 14.33% and 6.43%. Regional analysis showed that the high and extremely high risk levels in most regions increased over 2010–2050. (5) Under the ND scenario, the proportions of grids with decreased, unchanged, and increased risk levels were 15.13%, 81.48%, and 3.39% for 2000–2010 and 0.54%, 94.75%, and 4.71% for 2040–2050. These trends indicated that the proportion of grids with changed risk levels gradually decreased going into the future. This study analyzed the evolutionary trends of LER at the C-C E Zone for the ND and EP scenario. On the whole, the LER for the C-C E Zone showed an upward trend, and the EP scenario was conducive to reducing the risk. In response to escalating worldwide groundwater dependence amid climate change, accurate estimation of sustainable groundwater yield becomes crucial. This study investigated the impact of groundwater abstraction on tree mortality in Namibia. We compared tree mortality around production boreholes with monitoring boreholes and we correlated groundwater decline rates with tree mortality, establishing a model from which we derived a groundwater decline rate range limit. Ana tree mortality was significantly higher (P = 0.01) around production boreholes (13.3%) than around monitoring boreholes (0%). In the dammed Swakop River, Ana tree mortality correlated with decline rates (r S = 0.64, P < 0.01). The study suggests that decline rates of above 0.2–0.23 cm day−1 may cause elevated mortality (3–7%) and should not be sustained for extended periods. Rates exceeding 0.5 cm day−1 should be avoided, while monitoring is recommended for rates between 0.23 and 0.5 cm day−1. Woodlands in rivers with altered flood frequencies may be more sensitive to groundwater abstraction than previously thought. The study's methods offer a universal framework for refining sustainable yield calculations worldwide. • Riparian trees are likely more sensitive to groundwater abstraction than expected. • Pumping rates should not exceed 0.23 cm day−1 to avoid excessive tree mortality. • Abstraction rates of 0.5 cm day−1 and above should be avoided altogether. • Regular tree health and groundwater monitoring are essential. • Our method modifies the sustainable yield to prevent human-induced tree mortality. Observations suggest that sudden canopy decline and death of widely dispersed individual trees, associated with wood-borer infestations, has recently expanded and intensified within high-elevation Eucalyptus pauciflora and E. lacrimans stands on the Kosciuszko massif, southeast Australia. Despite reports of insect infestations and associated tree decline over four decades, the phenomenon has been poorly understood and the identity of the associated wood-borer taxon only anecdotally resolved. We conducted a systematic study of sub-alpine forests in Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, with the intent of building a knowledge base of the phenomenon's aetiology and guiding ongoing research priorities. Using 10-metre radius plots positioned on elevational transects in areas under shared management for snow-based recreation and conservation and areas managed for conservation-only, we found a strong association between increasing severity of wood-borer feeding galleries and decline of canopy condition. The presence of even the first indicators of insect infestation was associated with a three-fold increase in declining canopy condition. Two-way contingency analysis revealed that increasing severity of feeding galleries corresponded with a highly significant decline in canopy-condition. Indicators of wood-borer infestation held greater explanatory power for deteriorating crown condition, than the converse, indicating that wood-borer infestation more likely precede, than follow, canopy decline and death. Based on insect detections over three years and consistency between observed and previously described wood-borer damage, it is unambiguously clear that the native cerambycid species Phoracantha mastersi is principally responsible for insect galleries in affected trees. Detections were associated with warm daily temperature maxima. Modelling of the incidence and severity of infestations indicated elevation and land-management status were significant predictors for the probability of wood-borer infestation at stand and tree levels. The same predictors were significant for predicting the proportion of stand basal area affected. Combined with temporal patterns in insect detections, our modelling results suggest that low temperatures play a key role in limiting upward migration of infestations. While we suspect that fragmentation of forest cover within shared-management areas favours short-distance dispersal and local intensification, an increase in forest-edges may also account for both greater frequency and severity of stand-level infestations in shared-management areas. Mindful of an apparent lower limit to P. mastersi infestations at the interface of affected/unaffected eucalypt taxa, we advocate for greater understanding of physiological traits affecting tree-level vulnerability to infestation. Further, reflecting their roles in Phoracantha infestations elsewhere, we regard resolving the combined roles of temperature and drought stress in initiating outbreaks as particularly important. Although forest areas have been growing in Europe, some forest types have been declining regionally. Since the 1980 s, there have been reports of defoliation and mortality in evergreen oak woodlands of the Iberian Peninsula. However, long-term and large-scale trends of Iberian oak decline are still poorly understood. We quantified trends in canopy cover for cork oak (Quercus suber) and holm oak (Q. rotundifolia) woodlands in mainland Portugal for a 50 year period (1965 to 2015). We considered loss of canopy cover a proxy of forest degradation and asked how it changed over time, in association with human activity and climate. Between 1965 and 2015, both cork oak and holm oak canopy cover showed declining trends (57.9% and 71.1% of sampling points, respectively). Canopy cover dynamics, however, differed across time. Between 1965 and 1990, canopy cover gains (over 35% of sampling points) prevailed over losses (under 20%), with larger differences for cork oak than holm oak. Between 1990 and 2015, canopy cover losses (over 70% of sampling points) were much higher than gains (under 9%). Oak canopy cover decrease was associated with flatter areas (usually having more intensive land use) for both oak species, higher cattle numbers (holm oak only) and higher mean temperature (cork oak only). Contrastingly, loss of holm oak canopy cover seems to have occurred in less hot and dry regions that enable more intensive land uses. • Mexican tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) often are linked to the milpa system. • Semi-permanent agriculture and pastures has been replaced milpas in TMCF areas. • In 2005-2014, TMCFs, shrub fallows, and pastures increased in Sierra Norte, Oaxaca. • Total forest area and pine forests decreased, likely associated to land use change. • The cover type change rates are linked with human population growth rates. Land cover dynamics (LCD) in areas affected by different management types are hard to predict. Such is the case of tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) areas in Mexico. The millenary itinerant milpa involves local cyclical deforestation and natural reforestation dynamics with long-lasting fallow periods. Conversely, induced grasslands for cattle, non-traditional maize cultivation with short fallow periods, and sedentary agriculture involve persistent deforestation rates. Also, human density changes could alter LCD. Ignoring such factors may lead to equivocal conclusions. We analyzed LCD using remote sensing analyses with LANDSAT images during two periods (1993–2005, 2005–2014) in a TMCF area in Sierra Norte, Oaxaca, affected by milpas, sedentary agriculture, and grasslands. We divided the study area into six indigenous sub-regions with different human population growth rates (HPG). We identified five land-cover types: mature forests (MF) dominated by TMCF species, early successional pine forests (PF), shrubby fallows (SH), croplands (milpas and more sedentary maize croplands together), and grasslands. We show that: (a) The 1993–2005 period was more variable than the 2005–2014 period, 27 % vs. 21 % of the total area displayed transitions into another class. (b) MF area dominated (277,128 ha), increased from 1993 (64.0 %) to 2014 (67.6 %), and was not statistically associated with HPG. (c) PFs decreased from 27 % in 1993 to 15 % in 2014, and their rate of change was negatively associated with HPG. (d) The total forest area (MF + PF) decreased by 9.3 %. (f) Grasslands, SHs, and croplands fluctuated between periods and sub-regions, but none exceeded 7 % of the total area. (g) Grasslands showed the greatest increase rate, mainly at the expense of forestlands. (h) The grassland and SH increments were positively associated with HPG. The heterogeneity in LCD among periods and sub-regions reveals the relevance of considering temporal and spatial scales within the same region. The persistence of MF and the PF decrease can be ascribed to the disruption of the successional dynamics related to the decline of the traditional milpa enforced by federal and state policies at the beginning of the 21st century, the sedentarization of agriculture, local conservation areas, increases of induced pastures, and human emigration. Although Sierra Norte is an essential reservoir of TMCFs, the decline of the total forest area, particularly secondary forests, is of concern given their roles in resilience and as carbon, culture, and biodiversity reservoirs. Human activities have drastically reshaped global forest ecosystems in recent decades. However, identifying the origins, magnitude, and primary effects of these actions, especially in East Asia (EA), with a long history of human activity, remains challenging. Crucially, unraveling the early anthropogenic impacts on forest ecosystems has substantial implications for characterizing the Anthropocene. In this study, we collated and synthesized Holocene arboreal pollen (AP) sequences from 61 EA lake basins, which demonstrated an overall expansion of forest vegetation during the early to middle Holocene, followed by a retreat from 5 cal. ka BP. The cooling and drying climate during the mid- and late Holocene proved inimical to forest proliferation across EA. Survival imperatives are likely to drive humans to adopt grazing and farming, causing a transformation from forest land to agro-pastoral land. This change further accelerated forest ecosystem degradation. By dividing EA into five subregions, we observed asynchronous declines in forest vegetation from 8 cal. ka BP to 3 cal. ka BP. This trend is primarily attributed to human impacts, given the pronounced coincidence between forest reduction and emergence and prosperity of Neolithic agriculture in each region. Significantly, the positive feedback loop between population growth and agricultural expansion can amplify human impacts. Coupled with climatic effects, these factors resulted in EA's forest vegetation plummeting to its lowest level since 10 cal. ka BP at 2.1 cal. ka BP. Furthermore, the anthropogenic influences on EA forest vegetation mirror land use, soil erosion, and vegetation variability observed globally in terms of timeline. These alterations are driven by human activities, almost coinciding with shifts in atmospheric greenhouse gas levels away from their natural trajectory. We, therefore, argue that the Anthropocene definition should consider the aggregate environmental impact of human activities over millennia, rather than restricting to the most recent centuries. Forests are a major natural resource of the state of California, where over a third of the land is forested, and provide a wide range of environmental, economic, and social benefits. Over the past decade, unprecedented drought, insect outbreaks and wildfires have resulted in large-scale tree mortality that greatly affects the forest ecosystem and poses significant threat to human health and welfare and to the environment. Forest thinning and management is considered imperative to improve forest health and resilience. Forest resources including dead and dying trees as well as the residues produced from forest thinning and timber harvesting operations could potentially be used to a greater degree than at present to generate electricity and other renewable energy to meet the increasing demand for more sustainable supplies and mitigate the risk of wildfires. However, efforts to construct new electricity generation capacity in the state at any scale over the last several decades have faced both economic and environmental challenges. As needs for alternative management approaches have become clear, opportunities have emerged for new bioenergy projects. These projects need to be effectively planned and potential economic and environmental performance carefully evaluated. Toward this purpose, an integrated framework model for lifecycle and technoeconomic assessment was developed to quantify environmental and economic impacts, initially for generating electricity using forest resources and with associated web services developed for an online application (forestdss.ucdavis.edu) that allows potential users to quickly estimate the economic and environmental performance of a potential facility at specified locations. • Tree mortality, past fire suppression practices, and high fuel loadings threaten forests and human health and welfare. • Forest resources including dead and dying trees as well as residues can be used for greater renewable energy production. • Bioenergy projects need to be effectively planned and potential economic and environmental performance carefully evaluated. • An integrated spatial framework model was developed to aid in decision making related to new project investments. • Cylicodiscus gabunensis is an important timber species with a poor regeneration in evergreen forest. • This study aims to define the conditions needed for optimal regeneration and silviculture of C. gabunensis in Gabon. • Establishment of the studied population coincides with the abandonment of agricultural land 148 years ago. • Cylicodiscus gabunensis stems are located on soil with relatively high content in Fe, K, P and total nitrogen. Despite the implementation of management plans, commercial tree species densities are declining in the forests of Central Africa. In the region, Cylicodiscus gabunensis Harms (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae; common name 'okan'), is one such species most exploited, but its ecology remains poorly understood. The rarity of its regeneration in evergreen forest suggests that, like other commercial light-demanding species, the conditions that allowed populations to become established are no longer present. Using a combined archaeobotanical and pedological approach, the aim of this study is to identify the factors explaining the current distribution of C. gabunensis individuals at local scale. Within a plot of 1050 ha in a forest concession in south-eastern Gabon, we installed 40 archaeological pits equally divided between sites with and without C. gabunensis. The artefacts encountered were collected and analysed. Charcoal masses were quantified and 18 charcoals were dated. These ages were compared with the average age of the tree population, using growth data from 50 individuals and heartwood dating from 4 individuals. An analysis of the physico-chemical properties of the soil was carried out on composite samples from each archaeological pit. Pottery sherds were found in two pits while charcoal was present in all pits, suggesting widespread human occupation and fire throughout the study area. Human occupation occurred in two phases: between 2480 and 1010 BP and from 590 to 80 BP. The abandonment of agricultural land at the end of this second phase could coincide with the establishment of the C. gabunensis cohort whose average age has been estimated at between 90 and 148 years. Soil analyses showed that C. gabunensis individuals were located on soils that were comparatively richer in element potentially toxic (Fe) and in some plant nutrients (K, P) and total nitrogen. The current scarcity of young trees argues for the implementation of a silviculture that integrates the light requirements of the species as well as the chemical fertility of the soil. Temperate forests play a fundamental role in the provision, regulation, and support of hydrological environmental services, but they are subject to constant changes in land use (clearing, overgrazing, deforestation, and forest fires) that upset the hydrological balance. Through scenarios simulated with the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) hydrological model, the present study analyzes the effects of forest fires and land use changes on the hydrological balance in the microwatersheds of central Mexico. The land use changes that took place between 1995 and 2021 were estimated, and projections based on the current scenario were made. Two trend scenarios were proposed for 2047: one with a positive trend (forest permanence) and the other with a negative trend (loss of cover from forest fires). The results show that with permanence or an increase in forest area, the surface runoff would decrease by 48.2%, increasing the base flow by 37% and the soil moisture by 2.3%. If forest is lost, surface runoff would increase up to 454%, and soil moisture would decrease by 27%. If the current forest decline trends continue, then there will be negative alterations in hydrological processes: a reduction in the interception of precipitation by the canopy and an increase in the velocity and flow of surface runoff, among others. The final result will be a lower amount of water being infiltrated into the soil and stored in the subsoil.
