This paper regards the mechanical curriculum teaching as a design problem and uses environment-based design (EBD) method to solve it. First, environment components and their relations of the mechanical curriculum are found out by recursive object model (ROM). Then, conflicts in the teaching process are identified by analysing the above relations. Finally, solutions for solving these conflicts are generated. The proposed method is applied to mechanical manufacturing technology foundation (MMTF) curriculum with 217 students in grade 2016 in China. The solutions used in MMTF include decreasing the mental stress of students, developing more experimental projects, applying real cases and projects, adopting variety of assessments and so on. Compared with the performance of students in grade 2015, the average attendance rate and final scores are both increased, and three of the four achievement values of graduation attributes are risen. The practical example illustrates the EBD method is effective in improving curriculum teaching.

With the advent of the era of big data and information technology, deep learning (DL) has become a hot trend in the research field of artificial intelligence (AI). The use of deep learning methods for parameter inversion, disease identification, detection, surrounding rock classification, disaster prediction, and other tunnel engineering problems has also become a new trend in recent years, both domestically and internationally. This paper briefly introduces the development process of deep learning. By reviewing a number of published papers on the application of deep learning in tunnel engineering over the past 20 years, this paper discusses the intelligent application of deep learning algorithms in tunnel engineering, including collapse risk assessment, water inrush prediction, crack identification, structural stability evaluation, and seepage erosion in mountain tunnels, urban subway tunnels, and subsea tunnels. This paper introduces the development process of building cable structures in China over the past 70 years according to three stages: the initial, slow, and rapid development. It also summarizes the types of cable components and joints of building cable structures. The structural characteristics and representative projects of suspension, cable membrane, beam string (cable-supported), and cable dome structures are reviewed in this paper. The technology and service modes of logistics industry are changing greatly in smart economy, and innovation is becoming new development engine, which promotes the urgent transformation requirement of teaching system of logistics engineering majors in universities. Based on the data from logistics engineering majors in Chinese universities in 2021, a relevant study on the undergraduate logistics engineering major is carried out. Along with 'ability-motivation-opportunity' (AMO) theory, this paper analyses the influence of ability, motivation and opportunity on the transformation. The current situation of teaching system, the existing problems and the improvement measures are investigated. Based on the above analysis, this paper puts forward the relevant suggestions to promote the cultivation of innovative talents, mainly including planning and designing the training programme system for logistics engineering major, placing more emphasis on logistics practice courses, promoting undergraduate students' participation in various logistics contests, and increasing the level of teaching investment and guarantee. The Tibetan Plateau stands as one of China's largest middle and low latitude permafrost regions. However, the effects of global warming and human activities have led to permafrost thawing, inducing surface instability and posing significant threats to infrastructure and indigenous communities. The deployment of Lu Tan-1 (LT-1), China's premier L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, offers a novel opportunity to assess these changes. This paper evaluates the deformation of critical engineering corridors, such as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (QTH), utilizing time-series InSAR techniques with LT-1 SAR constellation data. We introduce both Stacking InSAR and a multi-baseline persistent scatterer multitemporal (MT-InSAR) method to enhance permafrost and engineering corridor deformation detection capabilities. Results obtained through the MT-InSAR approach reveal line-of-sight (LOS) deformation velocities of permafrost in the Beiluhe region ranging from -90 mm/y to approximately 70 mm/y, with an average velocity amplitude of 0.06 m/y. Differential displacement between alpine meadows and alpine deserts across the Beiluhe region is successfully discerned using LT-1 SAR data. Deformation velocities of QTR, QTH were found to be lower than that of permafrost, with average velocities of 0.027 m/y. These findings underscore the LT-1 SAR constellation's potential to serve as a valuable SAR data source for monitoring engineering corridor deformation within the Tibetan Plateau permafrost region. Space grid structures are widely used in the field of structural engineering due to their good mechanical properties and simple construction procedures. This paper reviews the development of space grid structures and mainly introduces the development of space grid structures in China in recent years. Some typical applications of space grid structures are introduced and the technical developments are summarized. It shows that China not only has a large number of engineering applications of space grid structures, but also a rapid development of related technologies. Oil and gas reservoirs in volcanic rocks are a particular type of unconventional reservoir and present unique challenges for exploration and production engineers. To help the oil industry understand volcanic reservoirs and solutions to complex development problems, we reviewed their key engineering technologies as well as their geological characteristics. The distinctive geological characteristics of volcanic hydrocarbon reservoirs are strong heterogeneity, low porosity and permeability, complex fracture systems, etc. The volcanic reservoir rock types in order of hydrocarbon abundance are basalt (38.5%), andesite (15.9%), volcaniclastic (12.1%), and rhyolite (11.5%). The porosity ranges from 0.1 to 70%, and permeability ranges from 0.0007 to 762 md. In some commercially developed volcanic reservoirs of China, the average porosity is 7.7–13%; the average permeability is 0.41–3.4 md. Engineers have applied a variety of adapted technologies to produce volcanic reservoir economically. Horizontal wells can increase production and reserves by 4–6 times those of vertical wells, and longer wells are preferred. Specialized hydraulic fracturing techniques are suggested, including small or mixed proppant size, second HF treatment after proppant slugging, high-viscosity frac fluid with high-temperature resistance, special fluid loss reducer, high pump pressure, Extreme Overbalance Perforating, limited-entry fracturing, matrix acidizing, etc. Water control measures include producing below critical rates, partial perforation or penetration, controlling hydraulic fracture height, using horizontal wells, implementing complete cementing job, etc. Well productivity evaluation should be conducted to understand well performance and appropriately allocate production rates among wells, using the modified AOF method and other productivity prediction models considering breakdown fracture gradient, gas slippage effect, non-Darcy effect, etc. Well sites need to be selected based on recognizing profitable lithologies, lithofacies, high porosity and permeability, relatively developed fracture systems, thick net pay zones, etc. The critical questions for the industry are how to enhance volcanic reservoir recovery with more efficient and economic hydraulic fracturing and water control techniques. This is one of the first papers systematically summarizing the engineering technologies and unique solutions to develop volcanic reservoirs. Purpose: This paper aims to establish a model to evaluate the benefits of building information modeling (BIM) from the owners' perspective. The model analyzes the correlation between five secondary benefit indicators and their subsystems: product, financial, organizational, management and strategic. The final key factors of BIM benefits provide a decision-making basis for owners to raise the efficiency of BIM application. Design/methodology/approach: Firstly, the authors combed 31 BIM-related literature and interviewed experts to identify 15 preliminary benefit indicators. The authors established a BIM benefit evaluation system based on relevant concepts, including two primary indicators, five secondary indicators and 15 tertiary indicators. Secondly, the authors analyzed the indicators by the extension theory of matter element analysis and a questionnaire survey of expert opinion. Finally, the new method was applied to a case study of a large shopping center in east China for empirical verification. Findings: A BIM benefit evaluation model, including a three-tiered hierarchy of primary, secondary and tertiary indicators, was constructed through literature review and expert opinions. The model determined the critical factors of BIM benefits, enhanced understanding of owner benefits and improved BIM application under the owners' leadership. Originality/value: At present, most studies focus on specific project stages or benefit indicators. This study developed an integrated BIM benefit evaluation system that targets owners. The development of Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province, China, as a significant national choice, has considerable strategic significance for the integrated growth of Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. This paper proposes a cloud model for the suitability evaluation of the construction of Xiongan New Area based on entropy weight analysis, taking into account the geological conditions, groundwater environment, environmental geological problems, and other factors of the suitability of image city development. According to the research, the suitability evaluation findings for the project building employing the cloud model are in strong accord with those of the traditional model and have some application potential. The evaluation's findings indicate that the project construction in Xiongan New Area is acceptable, with suitable and relatively suitable sites making up 81.4% of the total area and excellent circumstances for project development, construction, and usage. This study offers helpful direction for Xiongan New Area's urban land-space design and serves as a useful point of comparison for studies looking at the viability of other deep Quaternary Plain region engineering buildings. In order to promote the development and application process of suspended permanent maglev monorail transportation system, China has built suspended permanent maglev monorail transportation system engineering test line, Xingguo engineering test line, and the line has made useful explorations on many key technologies in the engineering process of the system. The key technical contents such as the overall layout of the test line, the suspension guidance and drive system, track beam and turnout, manufacturing process, which are different compared to the permanent maglev monorail transit and the conventional rubber wheel suspended monorail transit, are studied emphatically in this paper. The research shows that, under the premise of meeting the basic requirements of the test line, the reasonable overall layout reduces the land and engineering investment at the greatest extent. The innovative design of core systems, such as permanent maglev, realizes the stable suspension guidance and drive of the test line vehicles, and the design of key systems such as track beam bridge, turnout and processes lays the foundation for the safe operation of the test line. CO2 geological storage projects are an essential tool for China to achieve the double carbon target of energy savings and emission reductions. In order to safely and effectively control the implementation of injection projects and monitor the dynamics of CO2 injection, multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary monitoring tools are required. Among them, microseismic monitoring is a key technology for predicting reservoir dynamics and reflecting reservoir geomechanical behavior. Such monitoring has been carried out previously for reservoirs in other countries, but experimental projects are also gradually being developed in China. In this paper, we focus on the research and analysis results of microseismic monitoring of carbon storage projects in various work areas. For different reservoir conditions, we explore combinations of the monitoring implementation methods in China, comparing the differences in each work area. We propose a joint well and ground microseismic monitoring method and a multi-spatial and multi-physical field coupling research system for use in the implementation of domestic demo projects for the future research and development of microseismic monitoring of carbon storage projects. The monitoring program can meet the requirements for certain periodic repeated or continuous observations and can intelligently assess the risk and handle the alert behavior. The foundation is laid for the development of the future microseismic monitoring technology to achieve the goal of developing cost-controllable, permanent, and real-time monitoring equipment. Nowadays, with the leap-forward development of computer technology and the transformation of information technology management concepts, China's construction industry is quietly entering the era of refined management. Accurate estimation and cost control have become among the key considerations of the construction industry. For the calculation of engineering quantity, there are already many software devices that can be used for the calculation of engineering structure quantity, which means that the incorrect operation of personnel has been reduced to some extent, improving the work efficiency and measurement accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to solve the problems of computational missing, computational errors, inefficiency, data loss, and repetitive system in traditional computing based on the advantages of BIM computing system, which provide a reliable basis for cost forecasting and control. At the same time, using BMI calculation system to solve the problem of steel reinforcement in construction engineering, as well as the use of personnel, the existing calculation software still needs a lot of time and energy. We proposed a comprehensive evaluation study of reinforcement calculation in domestic construction engineering BIM calculation system based on a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. This paper first summarizes the BIM calculation system of construction engineering, uses fuzzy comprehensive evaluation system as an important evaluation index system in domestic construction engineering BIM calculation system, through the judgment of various factors affecting the actual effect of the calculation system, and uses the fuzzy evaluation system combined with a case to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed research. Therefore, through the above research and experiments, it is concluded that the research method of this paper solves many problems in the process of engineering structure reinforcement calculation and provides a good reference method for the establishment of comprehensive evaluation system of reinforcement calculation, as well as providing an effective validation for the widespread use of BIM technology in the construction industry. The development of China's new urbanization has driven the rapid increase in large complex engineering projects, which have the characteristics of large-scale investment, long-term construction, and wide social influence, easily causing benefit conflicts among relevant stakeholders, and breaking out social stability risks. In the previous research, the risks of large complex engineering projects mainly concentrated on the assessment of economic risk, schedule risk, etc. However, there were few studies on social risks, and they did not consider how the risks spread on the complex networks based on the social connections such as interpersonal relationship. From the subject of social stability risk diffusion of large complex engineering projects, this paper constructs a related risk diffusion model based on the SIR model to analyze risk diffusion mechanism. through Net Logo simulation platform, the model is placed under a small-world network environment that is closest to the topology structure of real social interpersonal relationship network for simulation research, aiming to find out key factors of social stability risk intervention for large complex engineering projects, which greatly contributes to the social stability risk management of large complex engineering projects. Featured Application: The obtained kinds of borehole camera images of long or deep holes in the tunnels of the building Sichuan-Tibet Railway. Digital panoramic borehole imaging technology has been widely used in the practice of drilling engineering. Based on many high-definition panoramic borehole images obtained by the borehole imaging system, this paper puts forward an automatic recognition method based on clustering and characteristic functions to perform intelligent analysis and automatic interpretation researches, and successfully applied to the analysis of the borehole images obtained at the Wudongde Hydropower Station in the south-west of China. The results show that the automatic recognition method can fully and quickly automatically identify most of the important structural planes and their position, dip, dip angle and gap width and other characteristic parameter information in the entire borehole image. The recognition rate of the main structural plane is about 90%. The accuracy rate is about 85%, the total time cost is about 3 h, and the accuracy deviation is less than 4% among the 12 boreholes with a depth of about 50 m. The application of automatic recognition technology to the panoramic borehole image can greatly improve work efficiency, reduce the time cost, and avoid the interference caused by humans, making it possible to automatically recognize the structural plane parameters of the full-hole image. This study aimed to understand the tensions in China's national science system as China is becoming a central player in global knowledge production. Publishing patterns and international co-authorship patterns of Chinese universities were utilized to analyse the dynamics and tensions in the national science system. Findings show that China's scientific publishing and collaboration behaviours are embedded in the 'centre-periphery' framework of the global science system, which stimulates conflicts between the rapid growth of English publishing and the need of developing China's local indigenous research. The Chinese national science system is increasingly stratified as it moves from the 'periphery' towards the 'centre' of the global science system. Its integration into the global science system is reliant upon a handful of top research universities and disciplines in the natural sciences and engineering. With strong support from national and local government policies for prefabricated buildings, China's prefabricated buildings have entered a period of rapid development. This article analyses the literature from various countries and establishes a structural model of the prefabricated building supply chain under the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) mode. It analyzes the factors that affect the prefabricated building supply chain under the EPC model from eight aspects: design stage, prefabricated component production and manufacturing stage, procurement stage, and EPC general contracting stage, etc. Then, it establishes an AHP fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the entire lifecycle supply chain of prefabricated buildings, providing reference for the robustness and resilience evaluation of prefabricated building supply chains, and further achieving green management of cost reduction and efficiency improvement in prefabricated building supply chains. Engineering construction involves many internal factors and external environmental factors, resulting in conflict or uncoordinated problems in engineering management. The harmonious management of engineering construction is the process of coordinating and solving the contradiction between construction elements and the problems between them and the external environment. The connotations of three subsystems of engineering harmony, namely, Ren harmony (RH), Wu harmony (WH), and Shi harmony (SH), are defined, and the system architecture of engineering harmony is constructed. Then, a hypothetical model is proposed to deeply explore the impacts of subsystems such as Ren harmony, Wu harmony, and Shi harmony on engineering harmony, as well as the moderating effects of the natural ecology, social humanities, and political economy on engineering harmony. The results show that (1) natural ecology has a significant promotion effect on RH, SH, and engineering harmony; (2) social humanities have a significant enhancement effect on SH and engineering harmony; and (3) political economy does not play a significant role in any process. "Engineering harmony" is used to measure the effectiveness of engineering management, and a scientific scale is used to reflect this index. Pine wood nematode disease is currently the most deadly forest disease in China, and the Monochamus alternatus is its primary vector. Controlling the M. alternatus is crucial for managing pine wood nematode disease. This study, based on the selected HasA (pGHKW4) secretory expression vector, used electroporation to combine the genetically modified high-toxicity toxin Cry3Aa-T with the entomopathogenic bacterium Yersinia entomophaga isolated from the gut of the M. alternatus. The SDS-PAGE and Western blotting techniques were employed to confirm the toxin protein's secretion capability. The engineered bacteria's genetic stability and effectiveness in controlling M. alternatus were assessed for their insecticidal activity. The results of the SDSPAGE and Western blotting analyses indicate that the HasA system effectively expresses toxin protein secretion, demonstrates certain genetic stability, and exhibits high insecticidal activity against M. alternatus. This study constructed a highly toxic entomopathogenic engineered bacterial strain against M. alternatus larvae, which holds significant implications for controlling M. alternatus, laying the foundation for subsequent research and application of this strain. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to systematically identify, assess, and categorize the barriers to digital transformation (DT) in the engineering and construction sectors, and thus to better understand the impact and how these sectors might be overcome. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopted a sequential mixed qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis approach. DT barriers were first identified from relevant literature and verified by an expert panel. Then, a questionnaire survey assessing the impacts of the identified DT barriers was distributed to construction professionals in China, and 192 valid responses were retrieved. Further, the data obtained were analyzed using ranking analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings: Based on the ranking analysis, the top three barriers are "lack of industry-specific standards and laws," "lack of clear vision, strategy and direction for DT," and "lack of support from top management for DT." EFA enabled the grouping of the 26 barriers into 3 categories: (1) lack of laws and regulations (LLR), (2) lack of support and leadership (LSL), and (3) lack of resources and professionals (LRP). The PLS-SEM analysis revealed that LLR, LSL, and LRP were found to have significant negative impacts on DT. Originality/value: These findings contribute to the body of knowledge on DT in the construction industry and help construction firms and government bodies improve the understanding of these barriers to DT and put forward relevant policies and incentives, thus seizing the DT benefits as a way to enhance construction project management. The proper disposal of steel slag has always been a great challenge for the metallurgical industry in China and around the world. In this work, the steel slag aggregate (SSA) was surface pretreated (PSSA) and applied into asphalt mixture. The adhesive behavior between the bitumen and five different types of aggregates (i.e., limestone, diorite, diabase, SSA, PSSA) were evaluated based on the contact angle and binder bond strength tests. The pavement performance of three asphalt mixtures which contain normal aggregate, SSA and PSSA respectively, was analyzed by Marshall stability test, wheel-tracking rutting test, low-temperature bending creep test and water sensitivity test. The results showed that surface modification can improve the surface properties of SSA, reduce its contact angle with bitumen, and eventually lead to the improvement of adhesion between them. In addition to the satisfied low-temperature properties, PSSA was found to significantly improve the anti-rutting property and reduce the water sensitivity of asphalt mixture. The waste rock heap is a kind of potential uranium (U) pollution source in U mining and metallurgy areas. In this study, we discussed the distribution characteristics of U in the soil (sludge) around a waste rock heap of a granite-type U mine in southern China, and the aim was to indicate U releasing behavior from the pollution source from the perspective of the sink. This work proves that U carried by colloidal solution can be transported for a longer distance. Thus, in the follow-up regulation engineering for U waste rock heap to inhibit U from entering the environment, it should be concerned on not only the diffusion of U in the form of debris, but especially the migration of U as colloidal solution. Underground void subsidence hazards, especially mine goaf, have now become one of the major social problems affecting the well-being of civilians and development in China. The objective of this study was to propose a kind of strong thixotropic engineering slurry and filling treatment for use in underground void subsidence hazards. The optimal agent ratio for thixotropic cement slurry/mortar was obtained by indoor tests, where the rheological agent is 7.5% compared to the weight of cement, the water–solid ratio is in the range of 0.7~0.8, and the aeolian sand ratio can be 0~1.5 times that of cement. The rheological properties of slurry and mortar were tested using a Brookfield RST-SST rheometer. The results show that aeolian sand can be used as thixotropic cement mortar for a backfilling treatment for underground voids (mine goaf). The static yield stress increases non-linearly compared to existing thixotropic models. The stress decays sharply with shearing (the shear rate is more or less 10 s−1) and then the stress increases with the increase in shear rate (the shear rate is more than 10 s−1). The increase in the stress of the slurry is greater than in the mortar. A natural logarithmic function between yield stress and rest time (only 1 parameter), an exponential function with two parts for stress–shear rate (a rheology model, with only 3 parameters), and an exponential function for the accumulation law (only 2 parameters) were proposed in turn. A landslide always results from a progressive process of slope deformation. In recent years, an increasing number of slope instabilities have occurred with regard to human engineering activities such as hydropower or traffic construction in mountainous area, which cause even greater casualties and economic loss compared with the natural hazards. The development of such earth surface process may hold long period with mechanisms still not fully understood. Using monitoring technology is an effective and intuitive approach to assist analyzing the slope deformation process and their driving factors. This study presents an engineering slope excavated during the construction of Changheba Hydropower Station, which is located in the upper reaches of Dadu River, Sichuan Province, southwest China. The engineering slope experienced and featured a five-year continuous deformation which caused continuous high risks to the engineering activities. We conducted in-depth analysis for such a long-term deformation process based on ground and subsurface monitoring data, collected successive data with a series of monitoring equipment such as automated total station, borehole inclinometers and other auxiliary apparatus, and identified the deformation process based on the comprehensive analysis of monitoring data as well as field investigation. After analyzing the effects of engineering activities and natural factors on the continuous deformation, we found that the overburden strata provided deformable mass while the excavation-produced steep terrain initiated the slope deformation in limit equilibrium state over a long period of time; afterwards, the intense rainwater accelerated slope deformation in the rainy season. Power engineering is complex, involving many participants, numerous management factors, and different stages. To improve the quality management level of power engineering and realize the standardization of power engineering quality management, power engineering construction quality management standardization (CQMS) is evaluated using the order relation analysis method (G1 method) and the cloud model method. Firstly, based on systematic thinking and practice in China, the CQMS framework is proposed, and the evaluation index system including organizational performance, management behaviour performance, and entity performance related to power engineering construction quality is established. Subsequently, the G1 method is used to determine the weight of each index, and the cloud model method is used to implement the evaluation process. The results are divided into five grades, representing the five grades of construction quality management. Finally, taking a practical multiterminal DC demonstration project in China as an example, the CQMS performance is described and evaluated. The Chinese government has pointed out in relevant literature that by 2020, China is in short supply of high-level innovative technology talents, and China's engineering education will face unprecedented challenges. Based on the needs of China's future economic development, the Ministry of Education urgently launched the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" in 2010, which aims to cultivate a large number of solid theoretical foundations, strong practical skills, and high innovation capabilities for the industry, the world, and the future. An outstanding engineer is the one who can quickly adapt to the needs of economic and social development. The program is divided into three levels of undergraduate, master, and doctoral training. The undergraduate level focuses on training in a series of high-quality applications capable of not only being competent in the management and marketing of the production site but also in the design, development, and operation of engineering projects. Talent: to achieve this training goal, the in-depth cooperation between schools and enterprises has become the key. In order to achieve the undergraduate-level training goals of the "Excellence Program," various local colleges and universities have adopted the method of school-enterprise cooperation, combined with their own school positioning, trying to explore a training path suitable for their own development. This research takes China's local application-oriented universities as the research object and uses the literature method to sort out and summarize the status quo of the school-enterprise cooperation in training outstanding engineers in China's local application-oriented universities. Various geological processes (mineral composition, structure, tectonics, weathering, etc.) affect the physical–mechanical properties of rock. Petrological and engineering geological characteristics of paleoweathered rock (PWR) from the K1/J2 contact zone are described in detail via field investigation and experimental testing. This PWR exhibits mainly sandy grains and mud structures, layered and massive strata, and calcareous and argillaceous cements; fissures are developed and often filled with argillaceous and detrital materials; nine minerals and seven oxides are present, and quartz is present in each sample. Long-term weathering results in a consistent bulk density and high total porosity due to the transformation of primary minerals into secondary clay minerals, forming PWR that undergoes argillization in water. The axial point load strength (PLS) is the largest among the tested PLSs, followed by the diametral PLS, and the irregular PLS. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) varies widely, but the results are reliable. The mineralogical, physical and mechanical properties of the PWR are compared to predict one parameter from another and study their mutual influence. The PLS and UCS of the PWR are negatively correlated with the elastic mineral group (EMG) content, weathering alteration indexes, water content, and total porosity and positively correlated with the quartz content, brittle mineral group (BMG) content, bulk density, real density, and longitudinal wave velocity. The UCS and the PLS, axial (diametral) PLS and irregular PLS are positively correlated. These results provide a theoretical basis for physical and mechanical property prediction of PWR masses and rapid estimation of UCS in engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground pressure hazards in deep rock engineering, such as rock spalling and rock burst, are big challenges and threats to personnel and equipment safety. In order to investigate the mechanism of ground pressure disasters in deep rock engineering, in-situ investigations were carried out in a deep gold mine in China. The survey results show that with the increase of the mining depth, the number and severity of ground pressure disaster events increase significantly. The investigation results of ground pressure disaster in the gold mine are analyzed by three methods. The effects of the maximum tangential stress, strain rebound and strain energy release on the failure of surrounding rock under different burial depths are obtained. The failure behaviors of surrounding rock are well explained by these methods at different mining depths. The new method considering strain energy release can well explain the phenomenon of core disking and it can accurately calculate the theoretical thickness of core disk. In addition, a theoretical calculation basis for the support design of energy absorbing bolt is provided in the paper and the support design figure is put forward by considering energy absorbing bolt. • According to in-site investigations, ground pressure hazard events increased significantly with depth. • Strain energy released by surrounding rock increases rapidly with a function of second power of mining depth. • Phenomenon of core disking is well explained, and calculation formula of rock disk thickness is provided. • The energy-absorbing materials such as energy-absorbing bolts can well absorb the released strain energy. We are pleased to present this Special Issue of TASE, including 12 extended articles selected from the technical program of the 2020 International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE2020). CASE2020 was held virtually due to the COVID19 pandemics, August 20–21, 2020, and was originally scheduled in Hong Kong, China. CASE is an offspring of TASE and is the flagship automation conference of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, constituting the primary forum for cross-industry and multidisciplinary research in automation. With the continuous innovation and development of science and technology, the mining industry has also benefited greatly and improved over time, especially in the field of backfill mining. Mining researchers are increasingly working on cutting-edge technologies, such as applying artificial intelligence to mining production. However, in addition, some problems in the actual engineering are worth people's attention, and especially in China, such a big mining country, the actual engineering faces many problems. In recent years, Chinese mining researchers have conducted a lot of studies on practical engineering problems in the stope and goaf of backfill mining method in China, among which the three most important points are (1) Calculation problems of backfill slurry transportation; (2) Reliability analysis of backfill pipeline system; (3) Stope backfill process and technology. Therefore, this final part (Part III) will launch the research progress of China's practical engineering problems from the above two points. Finally, we claim that Part III serves just as a guide to starting a conversation, and hope that many more experts and scholars will be interested and engage in the research of this field.
