In this research work, a coated paper was prepared with poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film to explore its use in eco-friendly food packaging. The paper was coated with PBAT film for packaging using hot pressing, a production method currently employed in the packaging industry. The coated papers were evaluated for their structural, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. The structural morphology and chemical analysis of the coated paper confirmed the consistent formation of PBAT bi-layered on paper surfaces. Surface coating with PBAT film increased the water resistance of the paper samples, as demonstrated by tests of barrier characteristics, including the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), oxygen transmission rate (OTR), and water contact angle (WCA) of water drops. The transmission rate of the clean paper was 2010.40 cc m−2 per 24 h for OTR and 110.24 g m−2 per 24 h for WVTR. If the PBAT-film was coated, the value decreased to 91.79 g m−2 per 24 h and 992.86 cc m−2 per 24 h. The hydrophobic nature of PBAT, confirmed by WCA measurements, contributed to the enhanced water resistance of PBAT-coated paper. The main aim of the present research is to examine the effect of progressive deinking and reprinting on the paper properties of inkjet-printed paper. A typical office copy paper was selected as the base paper and printed using an inkjet printer having at least 50 % ink coverage. Thereafter, it was deinked and reprinted thrice, and its paper properties were measured. The paper properties that were measured were roughness, porosity, opacity, brightness, specular gloss, whiteness, bursting strength, tearing resistance, tensile strength, contact angle, deinkability efficiency, visible dirt area, ink elimination factors, and color differences. The results showed that in comparison to the base paper, the progressively deinked and reprinted paper samples showed an increase in roughness, porosity, opacity, tearing resistance, dirt area, and color difference. On the other hand, there was a decrease in brightness, gloss, whiteness, burst strength, tensile strength, contact angle, deinkability efficiency, and ink elimination factors. Superhydrophobic and strong cellulosic paper was fabricated in a two-step process consisting of heavy refining and dip coating with PDMS (trimethylsiloxy-terminated poly (dimethylsiloxane)) and Hf-SiO2 (hydrophobic fumed silica) solution. Results showed that the heavy refining produced extensive fibrillated fibers, which significantly increased the tensile strength. Meanwhile, the density of the paper sheet increased, and the porosity decreased. Benefiting from these changes, the subsequent dip coating operation was improved, producing paper with a very high water contact angle (WCA), yet with a low up-take of the hydrophobic solution. Finally, superhydrophobic paper sheets were fabricated with 155o WCA and 1o sliding angle (SA). At the same time, its tensile strength increased by 12.7 fold (from 0.85 MPa of the original paper to 10.8 MPa), with additional benefits, such as high transparency (75% at 550 nm). Nowadays, the dependence on synthetic plastic-based materials for the preservation and transport of different types of products is very high, leading to major environmental and human health concerns, which highlights the importance of investigating sustainable options. Paper is a widely used bio-based material for packaging however, the development of newer and straightforward approaches to produce paper-based materials with increased functionalities and performance is still highly desired. In this work, we report the use of a bio-based photopolymerizable coating formulation, composed of tung oil, and using Darocur 1173 as photoinitiator, to develop functional papers with hydrophobic and improved water barrier properties, without compromising other properties. Coated paper samples were prepared, using different irradiation times (0, 15, 30, 60, and 300 s), to study the effect of this parameter on the properties of the coated papers. The ensuing coated papers presented pick-up values between 6 and 7 g/m2. Their hydrophobicity was significantly improved as evidenced by the increase in the contact angle values from about 71° to 127° and the significant decrease in the water absorption, measured by the Cobb test, from 108 down to 17 g/m2, upon a curing time of only 15 s. Furthermore, with this time of curing, the optical (viz. whiteness, brightness, and opacity) and mechanical properties (viz. tensile and burst strength) of paper were not affected. These results highlight the great potential of tung oil photopolymerizable coating formulations as a simple and promising alternative for the fabrication of more sustainable and functional paper packaging materials.
