1. Enhancing Older Adults' Gesture Typing Experience Using the T9 Keyboard on Small Touchscreen Devices

Abstract

Older adults increasingly adopt small-screen devices, but limited motor dexterity hinders their ability to type effectively. While a 9-key (T9) keyboard allocates larger space to each key, it is shared by multiple consecutive letters. Consequently, users must interrupt their gestures when typing consecutive letters, leading to inefficiencies and poor user experience. Thus, we proposed a novel keyboard that leverages the currently unused key 1 to duplicate letters from the previous key, allowing the entry of consecutive letters without interruptions. A user study with 12 older adults showed that it significantly outperformed the T9 with wiggle gesture in typing speed, KSPC, insertion errors, and deletes per word while achieving comparable performance as the conventional T9. Repeating the typing tasks with 12 young adults found that the advantages of the novel T9 were consistent or enhanced. 11. Efficient degradation of Bisphenol A by Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle activating persulfate with the assistance of biochar-supported MoO2

Abstract

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfate (PDS) activation by iron materials have attracted significant attention due to their high organic pollution removal efficiency and relatively low remediation costs. However, one of the iron-based materials’ shortcomings is the weak activation ability of Fe3+ on PDS and the low sustainability of Fe2+ in the oxidation environment. In this study, biochar-supported molybdenum dioxide (MoO2@BC) was employed as a co-catalyst to enhance the Fe3+ based PDS activation for Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Results showed that >96 % of BPA was removed during 60 min, and the BPA degradation efficiencies only slightly decreased after four reuses of MoO2@BC. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments indicated that reactive oxidation species (ROSs) contributing to the degradation of BPA were SO4[rad]−, [rad]OH and 1O2. Besides, it was found that biochar supporting favours the adsorption of Fe3+ on the MoO2 surface and promotes the electron transfer from Mo(IV) to Fe3+ based on the combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, electrochemical tests and density functional theory calculation (DFT). This work provides a new insight for enhancing the performance of organic contaminants degradation through AOPs based on persulfate activation by iron material.

Abstract

Importance: Assembling a functional microbial consortium and identifying key degraders involved in the degradation of 1,4-dioxane are crucial for the design of synergistic consortia used in enhancing the bioremediation of 1,4-dioxane-contaminated sites. However, due to the vast diversity of microbes, assembling a functional consortium and identifying novel degraders through a simple method remain a challenge. In this study, we reassembled 1,4-dioxane-degrading microbial consortia using a simple and easy-to-operate method by combining dilution-to-extinction and reculture techniques. We combined differential analysis of community structure and metabolic function and confirmed that Shinella species have a stronger 1,4-dioxane degradation ability than Xanthobacter species in the enriched consortium. In addition, a new dioxane-degrading bacterium was isolated, Shinella yambaruensis , which verified our findings. These results demonstrate that DTE and reculture techniques can be used beyond diversity reduction to assemble functional microbial communities, particularly to identify key degraders in contaminant-degrading consortia., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
