Abundant hydrocarbon resources were discovered in the Xiazijie fan-delta in the Triassic Baikouquan Formation in Mahu sag, Junggar Basin. However, the maximum depositional age of Baikouquan Formation and provenance of this fan-delta are still unclear, which would be unfavourable for further hydrocarbon exploration. In this study, we used detrital zircon U-Pb dating and composition statistics of conglomerate clast and sandstone grain from Baikouquan Formation to constrain the maximum depositional age and provenance of the Xiazijie fan-delta. The results showed that (1) the conglomerate clast compositions of Xiazijie fan-delta mainly consisted of tuff and intermediate-felsic magmatic rocks, and sandstone samples could be classified as litharenite type with the lithic fragments were almost entirely volcanic lithic fragments; (2) the average Qt:F:L values of sandstone samples (M152-S1 and M152-S2) were 26:7:67 and 21:8:71, respectively, and they plotted in the magmatic arc domain in the Qt-F-L ternary diagram, indicating the tectonic setting of source area of Xiazijie fan-delta was magmatic arc; (3) M152-S1 yielded U-Pb ages ranging from 417 Ma to 253 Ma, with a dominant age peak at 313 Ma and two secondary age peaks at 411 Ma and 268 Ma, respectively, while M152-S2 yielded U-Pb ages ranging from 467 Ma to 256 Ma, with a dominant age peak at 307 Ma and two secondary date peaks at 405 Ma and 262 Ma; (4) the mean age of youngest two zircon grains of M152-S1 was 254.8 ± 4.7 Ma, while that of M152-S2 was 257.6 ± 3.8 Ma, suggesting the Baikouquan Formation might be deposited after the Changhsingian to Olenekian; (5) the magmatic rock ages of central West Junggar were distributed mostly between 450–260 Ma, with a dominant age peak at 307 Ma. The ages distribution between magmatic rock of central WJ and detrital zircons of M152-S1 and M152-S2 were similar, indicating the central WJ domain should be the major source area of the Xiazijie fan-delta; (6) the magmatic rock of Hakedun–Hongguleleng area in the Central WJ was characterized by a peak age at 305 Ma, which was consistent with the peak ages of M152-S1 and M152-S2, indicating the Hakedun-Hongguleleng area was likely to be their major source area; and (7) one minor peak age at 411 Ma and another at 405 Ma were obtained from M152-S1 and M152-S2, respectively, and a zircon grain with Middle Ordovician age at 467 Ma was obtained from M152-S2, indicating Late Silurian–Early Devonian Chagankule pluton in the Saier Mountain and Ordovician Honggleleng ophiolite mélange in the Sharburt mountain were the minor source areas. Reservoir spaces, such as vesicles, 'secondary' amygdales, dissolution caverns and geodes, are widely developed in the Emeishan basaltic lavas in the Zhoudaping section, Leshan, west Sichuan, China. The dissolution characteristics, cementation sequences, hydrothermal activity stages, as well as fluid types, and their effects on the reservoir capacity were investigated for each stage. Macroscopically, the dissolution features present as irregular dissolution zones, which are characterised by a light red colour. Microscopically, in the dissolved zone, the cementation-filling minerals are associated with complex fill sequences, such as quartz/laumontite/chlorite–chlorite/saponite–epidote/celadonite–cryptocrystalline chlorite–laumontite/calcite/quartz. The U–Pb geochronology shows that the age of chlorite fill in amygdales is 235.3 ± 19.6 Ma; the coarse-crystalline quartz inside dissolution caverns/geodes, 124.47 ± 5.63 to 123.84 ± 5.63 Ma; and the siliceous mineral-filled amygdales, 118.34 ± 3.70 to 114.08 ± 3.76 Ma, which correspond to the early Late Triassic and the mid–late Early Cretaceous, respectively. Combined with geochemical characteristics of post-dissolution fill, the amygdales are affected by two stages of hydrothermal activity: chlorite filling of the amygdales corresponds to post-magma hydrothermal fluids during the early Late Triassic, and the siliceous mineral-fill in amygdales corresponds to deep-sourced hydrothermal fluids during the mid–late Early Cretaceous. The geodes/dissolution caverns result from a single stage of hydrothermal activity related to the mid–late Early Cretaceous deep-source low-temperature hydrothermal fluid. The Late Triassic post-magma hydrothermal fluids are generally destructive to pores, and tectonic-related dissolution of deep-sourced hydrothermal fluids has a positive effect on the formation of reservoir spaces, greatly enhancing fluid storage and flow capacities of the volcanic lavas. We recommend the multi-stage hydrothermal dissolution during Late Triassic–Early Cretaceous and faults, fractures and columnar joints be the focus of hydrocarbon exploration. The reservoir spaces developed in the Zhoudaping section, such as amygdales, dissolution caverns and geodes, were controlled by different stages and types of hydrothermal alteration. Amygdales are the product of two hydrothermal events, which correspond to post-magma hydrothermal fluids during the early Late Triassic and the deep-sourced hydrothermal fluids of the mid–late Early Cretaceous. Geodes/dissolution caverns are affected by deep-source low-temperature hydrothermal fluids in the mid–late Early Cretaceous. The Paleo-Asian Ocean, as the processor of the Altaids, was a long-lived ocean, and its subduction gave rise to substantial continental growth in the Central Asian continent. However, the location of the major oceanic basin and its evolution history are debatable, impeding our better comprehension of the early accretionary tectonics of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and its link to the reconstruction of the Rodinia. Here, we report our newly discovered Neoproterozoic adakitic rock (Xingxingxia gneissic granite) in the Eastern Tianshan of the southern Altaids to address the above issues. The Xingxingxia gneissic granite displays high Sr/Y ratios (47–114) and strongly fractionated rare earth element (REE) patterns with low concentrations of Y (3.00–6.36 ppm) and Yb (0.23–0.62 ppm), indicative of the adakite affinity. The adakitic rock is depleted in Nb, Ta, P and Ti, and possesses low Mg# (37–42), comparatively high K2O/Na2O ratios (0.75–1.08). Zircon U–Pb dating reveal that the adakitic rock was formed at 869 ± 9 Ma, which has relatively depleted Hf isotopic compositions (εHf(t) = + 1.9 to + 4.7). Their geochemical features are consistent with those of an origin from a thickened lower arc crust. Our work suggests that subduction of the Paleo-Asian oceanic slab beneath the Central Tianshan Arc occurred at least in the Neoproterozoic. Therefore, our study provides a solid and key evidence to show that the tectonic position of the major Paleo-Asian Ocean was located in the South Tianshan, where the paleo-ocean evolved into its mature stage following the subduction beneath the Central Tianshan at ca. 870 Ma. This work also shed light on the reconstruction of Rodinia and the interaction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the Jiangnan–North Tarim Ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the largest petroliferous basin in northeast (NE) China, Songliao Basin preserves continuous Cretaceous sedimentary‐volcanic records, providing an excellent opportunity to recover the palaeo‐environment. The Yingcheng Formation in the Songliao Basin contains ample gas reservoirs that attract widespread attention. Whereas the timing, petrogenesis and geodynamic mechanism of the volcanic rocks in the Yingcheng Formation are still controversial, which largely constrain our understanding of the formation and evolution of the Songliao Basin. Here, we present an integrated investigation of zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope, as well as whole‐rock elements and Sr‐Nd isotopes data for a suite of rhyolites of Yingcheng Formation from the SK2 Borehole of NE China. Zircon U–Pb age dating results of nine samples have yielded a concentrated age of ~110 Ma. These Yingcheng rhyolites are characterized by high SiO2 (66–78 wt%) and alkali (Na2O + K2O = 7.80–11.70 wt%) content, high 10000*Ga/Al (1.26–3.82, mostly >2.6) and FeOT/(FeOT + MgO) ratios (0.81–0.95), which show geochemical affinities with A‐type rhyolites. They have relatively low Y/Nb (0.69–1.78, average 1.19) and Rb/Nb (1.58–6.52, average 4.34) ratios, suggesting that the Yingcheng volcanic samples belong to A1‐type rhyolites which formed in an intraplate environment. These Yingcheng rhyolites show depleted Nd‐Hf isotopic compositions (εNd(t) = 2.43–4.87 and zircon εHf(t) = 4.22–9.88) comparable with the Early Cretaceous A‐type and I‐type rhyolites in the Songliao Basin, suggesting that they were originated from a juvenile continental crust. They were most likely derived from the partial melting of anhydrous lower crust instead of differentiation of mantle‐derived or mixing with alkaline basaltic magma, due to their low Mg# and absence of the coeval mafic rocks. Combined with the previous studies, A‐type rhyolites in the Yingcheng Formation erupted lasting at least 10 Myr and were widely distributed in the rifts of the Songliao Basin. We propose that the Yingcheng rhyolites were most likely generated from the rollback of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate in the Early Cretaceous, thus highlighting the significance of the subduction of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate during the secular evolution of the Songliao Basin. Whether a Neoarchean basement existing in the Songnen massif is currently debated. Identification of Archean magmatism from the Songnen Massif is helpful to resolve this issue. Here, we report newly discovered Neoarchean Shanquan pluton in the Western Songnen Massif. These Neoarchean Shanquan pluton are mainly composed of granites that are exposed near the town of Shanquan in Heilongjiang Province. LA‐ICP‐MS zircon U‐Pb dating reveals that the sample 2015TW1 has an upper intercept age of 2801 ± 69 Ma and a weighted mean age of 2708 ± 18 Ma, while samples LJ27QY1 and LJ27QY2 have upper intercept ages of 2677 ± 57 Ma and 2653 ± 18 Ma, and weighted mean ages of 2649 ± 10 Ma and 2653 ± 15 Ma, respectively. This indicates that these granites were formed at ~2.7 Ga. Most of the ~2.7 Ga zircons have older TDM2 ages of 2762–3326 Ma with positive εHf(t) values ranging from 0 to 6.4, while a few of the zircons have negative εHf(t) values ranging from −8.1 to −11.5 and older TDM2 ages varying from 3158 to 3264 Ma. The zircon Hf isotopes indicate that Paleo‐Mesoarchean crusts might once existed in the Songnen Massif, and the studied Neoarchean magmas were principally derived from partial melting of these Paleo‐Mesoarchean ancient crust. Based on the geochronological spectrum of magmatic and detrital zircons, the Songnen, Erguna, Jiamusi, Bureya massifs may have a common basement prior to the Neoproterozoic and may even be linked with the Triam Craton. The Nanyuan Formation contains information related to the Mesozoic tectonic transformation. In this study, three representative profiles were surveyed from the Nanyuan Formation, and multiple analyses were conducted. Zircon U‐Pb dating yielded their ages as approximately 158–146 Ma. The volcanic rocks are enriched in Rb, Th, U, K, and Pb and depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, implying their affinity for I‐type granites. The εNd(t) values (–8.3 to −6.0), (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.7077–0.7094) of the volcanic rock, and εHf(t) values (–8.71 to 0.12) of the Mesozoic zircons suggest that the Nanyuan Formation magma originated in the lower crust with the involvement of depleted mantle materials. The parent rocks of the rhyolitic and dacitic volcanic rocks formed by partial melting of basement rocks in South China and the andesitic volcanic rocks were derived from partial melting of the metasomatites generated by slab‐mantle interaction. The fractional crystallization also played an important role in later stage. Discrimination diagrams of the volcanic rocks indicated that they formed in a volcanic arc environment. Combined with previous data, the Nanyuan Formation recorded subduction of the Paleo‐Pacific Plate before regional tectonic transformation. We investigated the meta‐gabbronorites in Liangcheng and used detailed petrography, geochemistry, zircon geochronological and in‐situ Hf isotopic studies to clarify their formation and metamorphic ages, petrogenesis, tectonic setting and provide constraints on the tectonic evolution of Khondalite Belt (KB). The zircon U‐Pb dating results show that the meta‐gabbronorites crystallized at ~1.94 Ga and were metamorphosed at ~1.91–1.89 Ga. They can be subdivided into the low‐Mg and high‐Mg groups. The low‐Mg meta‐gabbronorites contain relatively lower MgO and higher SiO2 contents than high‐Mg meta‐gabbronorites. They are enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements, depleted in high field strength elements, and exhibit positive (high‐Mg meta‐gabbronorites) and negative (low‐Mg meta‐gabbronorites) Sr and Eu anomalies. The zircon in‐situ εHf(t) of meta‐gabbronorites is 0.07–4.12, with Hf model ages (TDM) of 2169–2400 Ma. The meta‐gabbronorites in Liangcheng originated from the asthenospheric mantle and experienced fractional crystallization of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase. They were contaminated by the crustal rocks (mainly khondalite series) during ascent, especially for low‐Mg gabbronorites. The ridge subduction is the most plausible tectonic setting for meta‐gabbronorites, indicating the eastern segment of KB was in a ridge subduction setting at ~1.94 Ga following an orogenic thickening event during a prolonged orogenic process. Using high‐precision zircon U‐Pb ID‐TIMS geochronology, tuffs from the Chang 9 shale and the Chang 7 shale were dated. The tuff in the Chang 9 shale is 241.47 ± 0.17 Ma, which falls between the top tuff age of 241.06 ± 0.12 Ma and the bottom tuff age of 241.558 ± 0.093 Ma in the Chang 7 shale. These reveal that the Chang 9 and Chang 7 shales are contemporaneous, belonging to the Ladinian stage of the Middle Triassic. This insight expands the region of the main source rock of Chang 7 to the northeast and will inform the search for the deep Chang 9 shale petroleum system, increasing the scope for exploring the Chang 7 shale system in northern Shaanxi. The research results clarify the relationship between the two sets of shale in the Yanchang Formation and redefine the distribution range of the Chang 7 shale in the Ordos Basin. At the same time, it shows that there is a cross‐layer problem in the stratigraphic division of the Yanchang Formation in different regions, the high‐precision U‐Pb dating technology providing a reference for the fine stratigraphic correlation of other continental basins in the world. The Coldbrook Group and related plutons in the Caledonian Highlands of southern New Brunswick contain voluminous late Ediacaran silicic rocks formed in a magmatic event not recognized in other parts of Avalonia in the northern Appalachian orogen. To better constrain the age and origin of these rocks, we used U–Pb zircon dating by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to check for older inherited zircon and obtain trace element data, followed by chemical abrasion isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) to obtain precise dates. Four silicic samples were dated from the Coldbrook Group, one from the Bonnell Brook pluton, and, for comparison, a felsic lithic-crystal tuff sample from the older arc-related Broad River Group. Overlapping CA-TIMS dates of 551.57 ± 0.23, 551.38 ± 0.24, and 551.70 ± 0.20 Ma for samples from the lower, middle, and upper Coldbrook Group, respectively, and 551.71 ± 0.19 Ma for granite from the Bonnell Brook pluton show that these units crystallized in 760000 years or less, consistent with a super-eruption event. Rhyolite from the uppermost unit of the Coldbrook Group yielded a younger date of 549.18 ± 0.09 Ma, but the large extent of that unit is consistent with the possibility of a second younger super-eruption. The felsic lithic-crystal tuff sample from the Broad River Group yielded a date of 615.48 ± 0.16 Ma, consistent with previously published dates from that group and associated plutons. Differences in zircon chemistry between the Broad River Group sample and the late Ediacaran samples are consistent with the contrasting subduction-related vs within-plate extensional tectonic settings as suggested by previous studies of whole-rock petrological characteristics of the two age groups. Anorogenic magmatism in the northern Arabian-Nubian Shield occurred during a long-lasting crustal extension event (<580 Ma), which succeeded the formation of the Pan-African orogenic belt in NE Africa and Arabia. Late Neoproterozoic anorogenic felsic volcanic-subvolcanic rocks, along with post-collisional granitoid suites, are exposed in the Gabal Abu Durba mountain range along the eastern flank of the Gulf of Suez in Sinai. These rocks include granite and rhyolite porphyries, metaluminous to weakly peralkaline with distinct potassic alkaline and ferroan affinities. Major and trace element characteristics such as K2O/MgO >16, total alkalis >8.5 wt.%, (K2O + Na2O)/CaO >10, agpaitic index (NK/A) >0.85 and Zr (>250 ppm), Nb (>20 ppm), Y (>80 ppm), Zn (>100 ppm) and Ce (>100 ppm), and 10,000 × Ga/Al >2.6 and [Zr + Nb + Y + Ce] >350 ppm are suggestive of an A-type granite genesis. Zircon U-Pb dating of two representative samples returned crystallization ages of 569 ± 2.6 Ma and 561.7 ± 3.2 Ma for granite and rhyolite porphyries, respectively. The melting temperatures estimated at 997–1020°C are consistent with high-temperature liquidus conditions. Fractional crystallization, coupled with less significant crustal assimilation, was likely the main mechanism of formation of these rocks from a common primitive asthenospheric mantle-derived trachytic magma in an anorogenic intra-plate setting. The A-type alkali granite and rhyolite porphyries of Gabal Abu Durba are manifestations of mantle upwelling and lower crust underplating in the late Ediacaran anorogenic stage. These felsic subvolcanic intrusions (≈ 569–562 Ma) along with their volcanic counterparts constitute a new unmatched rock unit that most probably represent the last chapter of the anorogenic magmatism in the Neoproterozoic Arabian-Nubian Shield crust before the beginning of Phanerozoic era. The now-extinct Palaeozoic to Mesozoic Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean is evidenced by the Mongol–Okhotsk suture, which stretches from central Mongolia to the Sea of Okhotsk. The geodynamics of southward subduction of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean remain enigmatic, especially whether the subduction began during the Carboniferous is highly debated. In this paper we present new zircon U–Pb ages and whole-rock geochemical data for the Carboniferous magmatic rocks in Northeast Mongolia. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that the Adaatsag dacite, Northern Bayanjargalan gabbro-diorite and Bagannur pluton were emplaced at ca. 325 Ma, ca. 316 Ma, and ca. 305 Ma, respectively. Occurrences of these rocks together constitute a Carboniferous magmatic belt to the northwest of the Middle Gobi volcanic-plutonic belt. The ages of trapped zircon xenocrysts within the Bagannur pluton indicate that the basement of this magmatic belt is the Ereendavaa terrane. Geochemical analysis indicates that these magmatic rocks were formed in an Andean-type active margin, which provides robust evidence for southward subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean during the Late Carboniferous. By combining all the available data, we argue that the onset of the Central Mongolia–Tsagaan Uul continental collision during the Late Carboniferous – Early Permian may have triggered the beginning of an active margin of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean along the northern coast of the Central Mongolia microcontinent. The granite complex in the Maohuo area of Litang County is located in the central and western parts of the Yidun-Shaluri island arc in the Sanjiang area; the intrusion is located in the sand slate of the Tumugou Formation in Daocheng District. In this paper, the petrographic analysis of the granodiorite porphyry and biotite monzogranite in the granite complex in the Volcano area is carried out, a systematic study of rock geochemical characteristics and chronology, elucidating the genetic connection between the two in the nature and tectonic background of the source region. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating shows, granodiorite porphyry, medium-coarse-grained biotite monzogranite, the ages of diorite inclusions in biotite monzonitic granites are 220.7 ± 1.3 Ma, 220.4 ± 1.6 Ma, and 219.8 ± 1.4 Ma, three are roughly formed at the same time, and it is a product of late Triassic magmatic activity. Rock geochemical features show that granodiorite porphyry in the granite complex, biotite monzonite granite, scintillation inclusions it has high total alkali, Rb content and relatively low Al2O3, Sr and other content, has a moderately negative europium anomaly, obvious loss of Ta, Nb, Ti and other high field strength elements, and aluminum saturation index < 1.1 is characterized. Combined with geological data granodiorite porphyry, both biotite monzonitic granites are also I-type granites formed in a typical island-arc environment. Combined with rock geochemical characteristics and U–Pb chronology research results, three should be a set of rock assemblages formed by the evolution of a set of magma melting events. Among them, biotite monzogranite and granodiorite porphyry are the products of homologous magma crystallization and differentiation. We conducted analogue experiments to examine flux‐driven and buoyancy‐driven magma ascent, which included a series of isothermal experiments and thermal, solidification‐prone experiments. We measured the internal flow using 2D particle image velocimetry, which indicates that buoyancy has a strong control on the flow pattern of isothermal dikes. Dikes that are not buoyant (likely driven by source pressure) take on a circulating pattern, while buoyant dikes assume an ascending flow pattern. Solidification modifies the flow field so that flow is confined to the dike's upper head region. The lower tail becomes mostly solidified, with a narrow conduit connecting the source to the head. We interpret that this conduit acts as a high velocity point source to the head, promoting a circulating flow pattern, even as the dike becomes buoyant. We then perform particle tracking velocimetry on several particles to illustrate the complexity of their paths. In a circulating flow pattern, particles rise to the top of the dike, descend near the lateral edge, and then are drawn back into the upward flow. In an ascending pattern, particles ascend slightly faster than the propagation velocity, and therefore are pushed to the side as they approach the upper tip. In erupting dikes, particles simply flow to the vent. In the context of crystal growth in magmatic dikes, these results suggest that crystal growth patterns (e.g., normal or oscillatory zoning) can reflect the magma flow pattern, and potentially the driving forces. Plain Language Summary: Dikes are magma‐filled cracks, which grow through the earth and can feed volcanic eruptions. Depending on the forces acting on the magma, including buoyancy, the magma inside can flow in different ways. We studied the flow inside of dikes using small, laboratory experiments. We injected oil, water, or liquid gelatin, mimicking the magma, into a block of transparent gelatin, mimicking the Earth's crust. We added small tracer particles to the liquids, which could be tracked using cameras, to understand the flow inside of our experiments. We found that when buoyancy is low, for example, when dikes are small, the internal flow circulates up and down. However, as the buoyancy increases, they begin to flow upward. These results can be related to small crystals that form in magma in nature and record chemical information in layers (known as zoning), like rings in a tree. If a crystal circulates up and down, it can look different from one that just rises up. Such crystals may give us information about the forces that control dikes at volcanoes. In September 2021, the La Fossa crater at Vulcano, in Italy, entered a new phase of unrest. We discuss a set of monitoring parameters included in the INGV surveillance network, which closely tracked the sequence of effects related to the crisis. The low-frequency local seismicity sharply increased, while the GPS and tiltmeter networks recorded the inflation of the cone, as an effect of fluid expansion in the hydrothermal system. Gravity variations were probably the effects of fast processes within shallow sources. The anomalies in soil CO2 flux, fumarole temperature, and in plume SO2 flux marked the strong increase in the vapor output from crater fumaroles. The signs of the impending crisis had been evident in the chemical and isotopic composition of fumarole gases since July 2021. These geochemical anomalies were clearly indicative of the enhanced input of gases from a magmatic source. In October, the massive degassing also influenced the areas at the base of the cone. In some areas, soil CO2 degassing and the thermal aquifer recorded strong anomalies. By early November, the crisis reached its acme. Afterward, the monitored parameters started a slow and discontinuous decreasing trend although remaining, some of them, sensibly above the background for several months. The multidisciplinary approach proved decisive for the interpretation of the underlying processes acting in the different phases of the unrest, thus allowing a consistent evaluation of the multiple hazards. This paper presents new structural, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), and petrological data in tandem with existing geochronological data to determine a polyphase Variscan tectonometamorphic event in the southwestern Moldanubian Zone of the Bohemian Massif. The high-grade metamorphic rocks of this Zone underwent the successive tectonometamorphic evolution (from ca. 360 to 310 Ma) that portrays three main geodynamic episodes: (a) The collisional to exhumation episode (ca. 360–335 Ma) recorded by the relict, steeply dipping, and ~ N(NNE) to S(SSW) striking foliation planes (S1) developed at temperatures of 720–754 °C and pressures of ca. 790 MPa (M1) and superimposed flat-lying foliation planes (S2) under temperatures of 674 ± 27 °C and pressures of 680 ± 110 MPa (M2). (b) The late-orogenic ~ N–S oriented shortening (ca. 335–325 Ma) controlled by convergence of a crustal segment derived from the Gondwana continent (newly named as the "Salzburgia Block) and the mostly consolidated Bohemian Massif. These collisional processes resulted in superimposition of the foliation planes (S3) dipping steeply to moderately to the ~ N to ~ NNE(NE), re-heating and metamorphic overprint at temperatures of 770–830 °C and pressures of 450–530 MPa (M3) and syn-tectonic emplacement of the numerous late-orogenic granitoids. (c) Subsequently, the switch in the paleostress regime from ~ N–S shortening to that of late-orogenic ~ ENE–WSW extension (ca. 325–310 Ma) led to the activation of regional right-lateral transtension and exhumation of the deep-seated rocks. Associated re-equilibration proceeded under temperatures of 662–701 °C and pressures of 362–437 MPa (M4 event). In the latter stages of this episode, the synchronous reactivation of the regional ~ NW–SE striking right-lateral shear zones (Pfahl and Danube) and the almost perpendicular ~ NNE(NE)–SSW(SW) striking left-lateral shear zones took place. Pre‐Mesozoic basements of the Alpine belt commonly contain kilometre‐scale folds with steeply inclined axial planes and fold axes, which are named "Schlingen" folds. The structural evolution of Schlingen folds and their geodynamic significance for the Variscan evolution are unclear. To close this gap, this study investigates a well-preserved Schlingen structure in the Gotthard nappe (Central Swiss Alps). This Schlingen fold evolved by a combination of shearing and folding under amphibolite-facies conditions. Detailed digital field mapping, coupled with petrographical and structural investigations, reveal local synkinematic migmatisation in the fold hinges parallel to axial planes. Zircon crystals from leucosomes in the fold hinges have magmatic cores that yield an age of 449 ± 3 Ma, and rims with a range of dates from ~ 270 to 330 Ma (main cluster at 315 ± 4 Ma). We ascribe this late Carboniferous age to peak metamorphic conditions of the late Variscan Schlingen phase. Moreover, we describe for the first time post-Schlingen, but pre-Alpine transpressional deformation. The investigated Schlingen fold is discussed with respect to comparable structures of the wider Alpine realm, located in the most southern part of the Variscan belt. We propose that Schlingen formation concurred with the crustal-scale transpressional tectonics. This scenario separates, at least in a structural sense, the Southern Variscides from more northern parts (also Gondwana derived), where Schlingen folds are absent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The metamorphism of the Central Qilian Block in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau records a complete tectonic history of the Qilian Orogen. Here, results of structural measurements, geochronological data, and thermobarometry for metamorphic rocks in the Central Qilian Block were presented, which trace the tectonic evolution of the Qilian Orogen. New U–Pb dating of detrital zircon from one paragneiss shows a main age population between c. 1500 and c. 1250 Ma, with the youngest age of 1085 Ma. This unit was intruded by an orthogneiss which has a U–Pb weighted mean age of 920 ± 18 Ma. Together with c. 1200–1000 Ma ages from inherited zircon cores in amphibolites, these results indicate that the protoliths of the Huangyuan Group were formed during the Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic. Rims of these zircons obtain tightly constrained and concordant ages ranging from c. 459 to c. 427 Ma, with a weighted mean age of c. 450 Ma. Phase equilibrium modelling and conventional thermobarometry jointly indicate high‐temperature/medium‐pressure HT–MP metamorphism along a clockwise pressure–temperature (P–T) path at c. 450 Ma, passing through prograde conditions of 7.8–8.0 kbar and 620–650°C to peak conditions of ~7 kbar and ~780–800°C. Together with documented widespread metamorphism, magmatism, and ductile shear belts, these new results reassert that the Central Qilian Block experienced a three‐stage tectono‐metamorphic evolution during the Early Palaeozoic and the HT–MP metamorphism of Huangyuan Group was developed by a continental collision geodynamic setting with coeval mafic and granitic magmatism. Although an extensive continental arc magmatism was recorded in the northern North China Craton (NCC) during the Carboniferous, a general geodynamic model has not been constructed, and associated crust–mantle processes are not fully understood. Here, we carried out systematic geochronological and geochemical investigations on the alkali‐feldspar granite pluton in the Zhaojinggou area, northern NCC. U–Pb dating of high‐U–Th zircons failed to obtain concordant ages due to severe metamictization, while apatite U–Pb dating yielded a perfect age of 327.6 ± 4.1 Ma, indicating the emplacement of granites in the Early Carboniferous. The granites have high SiO2 (74.99–76.88 wt%) and K2O (5.73–6.43 wt%) contents and exhibit enriched LREEs, K, Rb, Th, U, and Pb, and depleted Nb, Ta, P, and Ti contents, which are typical of highly fractionated, I‐type high‐K granites formed under a continental arc setting. Moreover, the high‐K granites show highly enriched Nd isotopic compositions (with whole‐rock and apatite εNd(t) of −33.6 to −16.3) that are distinctly lower than other Carboniferous continental arc rocks in the northern NCC (εNd(t) from −18.5 to −9.9). These geochemical characteristics indicate that the high‐K granites possibly originated by partial melting of the Archean TTG gneisses and mafic rocks in the lower crust. Involvement of mantle‐derived fluids is crucial to induce the low‐temperature melting, and sufficient fractional crystallization was reached during subsequent magmatic evolution. Previous studies suggest that the Carboniferous continental arc rocks in the northern NCC have mantle‐derived or crust–mantle mixed sources. Our study, however, indicates that there also exist coeval crust‐derived magmatic rocks in this area. In combination with previous work and this study, we support the hypothesis that the widespread Carboniferous continental arc magmatism in the northern NCC is related to the southward subduction of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO), and the different magma sources and extensive crust–mantle interactions are responsible for the formation of diverse types of magmatic rocks with contrasting isotopic compositions. We also draw attention to the fact that phosphate minerals such as apatite may be a preferable chronometer relative to high‐U–Th zircon in a highly fractionated igneous system. The Jiamusi Block is a crucial geological unit joining multiple tectonic regimes, including the Late Palaeozoic Palaeo‐Asian Ocean and the superposition of the Early Mesozoic Palaeo‐Pacific tectonic domain. However, the duration of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate subduction beneath the Jiamusi Block has long been controversial. In this paper, we focus on clastic rocks from the Nanshuangyashan and Yunshan formations on the east margin of the Jiamusi Block and use the modal analysis of sandstones and detrital zircon U–Pb dating to trace the subduction history of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate. Our analysis results suggest that the two groups of samples are characterized by a high content of monocrystalline quartz and a low content of lithic and feldspar, indicating that the sedimentary provenances were stable continental blocks and magmatic arcs. The detrital zircon ages of the Nanshuangyashan Formation have a major peak at ca. 245 Ma and two secondary peaks at ca. 470 and 228 Ma, respectively. The Yunshan Formation has a major peak at ca. 494 Ma and a secondary peak at ca. 265 Ma. The provenances of the Nanshuangyashan Formation were attributed to the Jiamusi Block, Khanka Block, and a Late Triassic magmatic arc. Similarly, the provenances of the Yunshan Formation were attributed to the Jiamusi and Khanka blocks. Detrital zircon analysis results show that the eastern margin of the Jiamusi Block was in the same back‐arc basin settings in the Late Triassic and the Late Jurassic. Thus, we propose that the eastern margin of the Jiamusi Block had been affected by the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate subduction in the Late Triassic and had continued to the Late Jurassic. U–Pb dating of hydrothermal and hydrothermal accessory minerals is challenging because they often contain high concentrations of common Pb, low U concentrations, and they can be altered and fractured. Photomicrography, Bayesian regression, and trace element and isotope ratio maps have effectively been used to overcome these problems in dating such minerals. A new software, Brama (Bayesian regression and age mapping application) for LA-ICP-MS U–Pb data, performs outlier processing, baseline correction, isotope calculation and Bayesian regression by matching the laser ablation position of the line scan with the time-resolved signal of the plasma mass spectrometry data generated from quadrupole instruments, resulting in high resolution spatial maps of trace element and isotope ratios as well as age results. The software-derived data can also be used in the Tera–Wasserburg and Wetherill methods to calculate mineral ages. We demonstrate the key advantages and potential applications of Brama with two examples of LA-ICP-MS calcite and apatite U–Pb dating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The zircon in situ laser (U–Th)/He and U–Pb double dating technique has been proven to be a powerful and efficient tool for sedimentary provenance studies. The recently developed laser microanalysis technique offers some advantages over conventional bulk crystal chemical methods such as higher spatial resolution, more productivity, and higher safety by avoiding the usage of concentrated hydrofluoric acid. To achieve this, matrix-matched zircon reference materials with a homogeneous composition (especially parent nuclides such as U, Th, and Sm isotopes) and (U–Th)/He age are urgently needed. In this study, a new natural zircon reference material SA01 is reported for in situ (U–Th)/He and U–Pb double dating by laser microbeam techniques. Three randomly selected shards yielded weighted mean in situ (U–Th)/He ages of 350.4 ± 18.8 Ma (N = 5, MSWD = 0.66), 369.6 ± 11.4 Ma (N = 12, MSWD = 0.60), and 368.6 ± 14.4 Ma (N = 7, MSWD = 0.59), respectively, which were consistent with traditional single-crystal laser fusion He determination and U–Th isotope dilution (U–Th)/He ages of 358.5 ± 9.1 Ma (N = 17, MSWD = 1.3) and 363.7 ± 13.6 Ma (N = 8, MSWD = 1.7) from two different laboratories. All the in situ analyses yielded a concordia age of 535.2 ± 7.1 Ma (N = 32, MSWD = 5.1) and weighted mean U–Pb age of 535.4 ± 7.1 Ma (N = 32, MSWD = 0.96), which was indistinguishable with published isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb ages. Raman spectrometry analysis suggested that the SA01 zircon experienced a low degree of radiation damage. All the results suggest that the SA01 zircon could serve as a new potential reference material for in situ (U–Th)/He, U–Pb double dating and traditional solution (U–Th)/He dating techniques. Rapakivi-type quartz monzonite and the underlying dark-grey granodiorite from the Pietkowo IG1 borehole, in the Polish part of southernmost Fennoscandia have been investigated using whole-rock geochemistry, Sm–Nd isotope geochemistry and U–Pb zircon dating. The quartz monzonite was emplaced at 1495–1491 Ma, although slightly older zircon cores (antecrysts) of 1513 Ma imply a two-stage crystallization. The geochemical similarities with Mazury Complex granitoids, their metaluminous and alkali-calcic nature, elevated contents of F, Ga and high-field-strength-elements (HFSE), indicate that the Pietkowo IG1 rapakivi-type quartz monzonite is an 'A-type' granitoid. The presence of magnetite and titanite indicates crystallization under oxidizing conditions. The rock is classified as A2 sub-type, and the Nb/Y ratio implies a within-plate setting. The dark-grey granodiorite, dated to 1813 Ma, has a calc-alkaline character, typical of a volcanic-arc environment. Initial whole rock εNd values range between -2.9 and -3.3 for the rapakivi-type quartz monzonite and from -1.0 to + 1.1 for the dark-grey granodiorite. We suggest that the A-type Pietkowo IG1 rapakivi-type quartz monzonite was generated from the dark-grey granodiorite via partial melting at middle to lower crustal levels. The most plausible ascent route for the quartz monzonite was via lithospheric-scale weakness zones, between the eastern margin of the Mazowsze Domain and Belarus-Podlasie Granulite Belt, i.e., the Białystok fault. Therefore, the Pietkowo IG1 rapakivi-type quartz monzonite is a representative of the Mesoproterozoic A-type granitoid occurrence in southernmost Fennoscandia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metamorphic rocks from the Diancang Shan (DCS) complex along the Ailao Shan-Red River belt between the South China plate and Simao-Indochina block are studied in this contribution to constrain the Proto- to Palaeo-Tethys tectonic evolution of the eastern Tethys domain. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb geochronological dating is conducted in this study on the metasedimentary rocks (garnet-biotite-plagioclase gneisses, biotite-quartz schists and phyllonites) from different stratigraphical horizons (Proterozoic and Triassic) of the DCS complex. The analyses yielded three major age peaks at ca. 248 Ma, ca. 441 Ma, ca. 1000–900 Ma and one subordinate age peak at ca. 828 Ma. The youngest ages for the samples help to constrain the maximum ages of deposition of the complex at Early Carboniferous and Late Triassic, respectively. The existence of the diagnostic age peak at ca. 440 Ma and the euhedral-subhedral morphology of the detrital zircons in the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic strata may indicate that there were early Palaeozoic magmatic activities along the eastern margin of the Simao-Indochina block. At the meantime, the age peak at ca. 440 Ma was never reported in the early Palaeozoic strata from the western margin of the South China plate, which supports the existence of an early Palaeozoic rift zone, i.e., the Proto-Tethys Jinsha Jiang-Ailao Shan-Song Ma rift zone, being consistent with geochemical discriminations. Furthermore, we conclude, from the significant difference between detrital zircon age data of Silurian to Devonian sedimentary rocks from the Simao-Indochina block and South China plate, the opening of the Palaeo-Tethys ocean since Early Carboniferous, the absence of evidence for the Palaeozoic orogeny, and the successive sedimentation from the Cambrian to Triassic along the western margin of the South China plate, that the Proto-Tethys rifting and subsequent Palaeo-Tethys ocean evolution along the Jinsha Jiang-Ailao Shan-Song Ma zone formed actually a complete 'Wilson Cycle' from early Palaeozoic to the Late Triassic. The Beishan orogen is part of the Neoproterozoic to early Mesozoic Central Asian Orogenic System in central Asia that exposes ophiolitic complexes, passive-margin strata, arc assemblages, and Precambrian basement rocks. To better constrain the tectonic evolution of the Beishan orogen, we conducted field mapping, U-Pb zircon dating, whole-rock geochemical analysis, and Sr-Nd isotopic analysis. The new results, when interpreted in the context of the known geological setting, show that the Beishan region had experienced five phases of arc magmatism at ca. 1450-1395 Ma, ca. 1071-867 Ma, ca. 542-395 Ma, ca. 468-212 Ma, and ca. 307-212 Ma. In order to explain the geological, geochemical, and geochronological data from the Beishan region, we present a tectonic model that involves the following five phases of deformation: (1) Proterozoic rifting that separated the North Beishan block from the Greater North China craton that led to the opening of the Beishan Ocean, (2) early Paleozoic north-dipping subduction (ca. 530- 430 Ma) of the Beishan oceanic plate associated with back-arc extension followed by collision between the North and South Beishan microcontinental blocks, (3) northward slab rollback of the south-dipping subducting Paleo-Asian oceanic plate at ca. 450-440 Ma along the northern margin of the North Beishan block that led to the formation of a northward-younging extensional continental arc (ca. 470-280 Ma) associated with bimodal igneous activity, which indicates that the westward extension of the Solonker suture is located north of the Hongshishan-Pengboshan tectonic zone, (4) Late Carboniferous opening and Permian north-dipping subduction of the Liuyuan Ocean in the southern Beishan orogen, and (5) Mesozoic-Cenozoic intracontinental deformation induced by the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean system in the north and the Tethyan Ocean system in the south. The Bin Yauri-Libata polymetallic ore district is a Sn and Au ore-bearing district in the Zuru schist belt, Northwestern Nigeria. The Libata Sn ore field is characterized by a set of cassiterite-bearing hydrothermal veins associated with Neoproterozoic Pan-African granites affected by deformation and low-grade metamorphism. The hydrothermal alteration associated with cassiterite-bearing quartz veins in the Libata deposit includes silicification, albitization, chloritization, and potassic alteration. In this study, geochemical and geochronological data from tourmalines and zircons from Sn-bearing lodes, unmineralized and altered granites is applied to reveal the timing, fluid composition, and source of ore-forming materials for tin mineralization in the Libata ore field. Zircon trace element and Hf isotopes [εHf(t) = +4.37 to +10.85] reveal a mantle-derived source with some crustal contribution for the melts forming the Libata Sn-bearing granites. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating constrains the magmatic and hydrothermal ages to 650–646 and 649–646 Ma for the Libata granites. Overlapping zircon εHf(t) and 176Hf/177Hf but distinct 176Lu/177Hf and 176Yb/177Hf ratios from magmatic and hydrothermally altered zircons reveal a magmatic source for the hydrothermal fluids which triggered cassiterite deposition in the Libata ore field. Major element chemistry constrain tourmalines from the Libata ore field as schorls that show high alkalis, low-Ca contents, and moderate □ values (where □ is x-site vacancy). High Li, Zn, and Sn concentrations in tourmaline as well as Li/Sr and Ca-Fe-Mg ratios demonstrate that the tourmaline formed from granite-sourced fluid likely derived from the host Libata granites. Measured δ11B values from the Libata tourmaline range from –15.7‰ to –14.1‰. The δ11B of the mineralizing fluid is estimated to be –13.1 to –11.9‰ for the Libata tourmalines at 400–500 °C and overlaps with averages from fractionated granites worldwide. Therefore, our data show that tourmaline and zircon are useful tracers of magmatic-hydrothermal evolution in rare-metal-bearing granite systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bastnäsite contains considerable amounts of U and Th and has been widely used for U-Th-Pb dating. Hydrothermal alteration of bastnäsite is common in nature but its effects on U-Th-Pb dating are not currently well constrained. Hence the significance of U-Th-Pb ages obtained from altered bastnäsite cannot be evaluated. Here, we present a detailed geochronologic as well as micro- and nano-scale mineralogical study of altered bastnäsite in a Mo-REE deposit, Central China. The original bastnäsite grains were confirmed to have crystalized at 208 Ma but were variably overprinted by a hydrothermal event at 150 Ma. They commonly exhibit typical replacement textures that appear to have formed from a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation process, i.e., a primary unaltered domain surrounded by a porous altered domain. Micro- and nano-scale mineralogical observations strongly suggest that during the coupled dissolution-reprecipitation process, non-radiogenic (common) Pb was incorporated into the altered domains in the form of nanoscale galena inclusions. Such incorporation (even minor) has significantly affected the 206Pb/238U and 207Pb/206Pb ratios due to the low contents of U and its daughter isotopes in bastnäsite, resulting in highly variable, discordant U-Pb dates for the altered domains. In contrast, incorporation of the non-radiogenic Pb has very limited effects (<5%) on the Th-Pb system due to the remarkably high contents of Th and radiogenic 208Pb in bastnäsite. Instead, the scattered 208Pb/232Th ages (208 to 150 Ma) of the altered domains were essentially affected by incomplete replacement, and thus can be used to approximate the lower age limit of the primary hydrothermal activity or the upper age limit of the secondary hydrothermal activity. The results from this study highlight that because of the different orders of magnitude between the U and Th contents in bastnäsite, the mobilization of radiogenic and non-radiogenic Pb during alteration may have significantly different impacts on the U-Pb and Th-Pb systems. The Borborema Province hosts several Mn-rich metasedimentary sequences, containing up to 40 wt% MnO(total). These sequences are composed of Mn oxide and Mn silicate lenses that alternate with spessartite quartzite layers. They are also spatially associated with graphite-bearing gneissic and granitic rocks. Here, we use the Lagoa do Riacho manganese deposit, a Mn-rich sequence of the northern Borborema Province (within the Canindé do Ceará Complex), to constrain the time of deposition of the Mn-rich sedimentary protolith, discuss its tectonic setting, and draw correlations between African and Brazilian manganese deposits. The age of the youngest detrital zircon population from a meter-sized spessartite quartzite bed, interlayered with oxidized Mn ore, was close to 2130 Ma. Similarly, a gneiss hosting the Mn mineralization yielded a maximum depositional age close to 2156 Ma. U–Pb dating of zircon metamorphic overgrowths from the Mn-bearing sequences and host rocks coupled to a zircon U–Pb crystallization age of an intrusive leucocratic granite provided a minimum age interval for the Mn-rich succession (ca. 2106–2023 Ma). These constraints point to a Rhyacian depositional age (ca. 2200–2100 Ma) for the Mn-rich precursors, which were most likely deposited as syn-orogenic sediments. The results also allow us to conclude that the age range of 2200–2100 Ma is coeval with the timing of deposition of other world-class manganese deposits, such as those from the Francevillian and Birimian groups in Gabon and Ghana, respectively, besides those from the South American Platform (e.g., Serra do Navio, Carajás, and Minas Gerais). Previous studies suggest that the northeastern Tibetan Plateau has been the major source area for the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP); this contribution was used to prove that the Yellow River played a dominant role in transporting the materials from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, making them available for the CLP. Accordingly, the proximal North China Craton is considered to have increased supply potential of dust to the CLP further eastward. However, the origin of the eastern CLP and the relationship between loess and proximal river sediments have never been systematically studied, which prevents us from working out the surface process between source and sink. In this study, we conducted U–Pb dating and analyses of the grain morphologies of detrital zircons and heavy mineral assemblages on the upper Quaternary loess and riverbed sediments on the eastern and central CLP. We also built a data set (n = 48,161) of the zircon U–Pb ages of the Quaternary loess, deserts, and potential source areas. Our results show that most loess samples on the eastern CLP were strongly affected by the North China Craton. The dust supply ability of rivers to loess is very limited. Along the dust transport path, the proximal mountains, rivers and loess can all provide dust for loess deposition. Our findings emphasize the important role proximal supply has played in the evolution of the CLP since at least the late Neogene, for example, the northeastern Tibetan Plateau for the western and central CLP, and the North China Craton for the eastern CLP. Plain Language Summary: Understanding the dust source of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) provides fundamental knowledge about Cenozoic changes in the tectonics of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and in the East Asian climate. For the eastern CLP, which has been poorly studied by scholars, we present a provenance study of detrital zircons, showing that most upper Quaternary loess samples mainly originated from the proximal North China Craton, and a few samples mainly originated from the northeastern Tibetan Plateau + Central Asian Orogenic Belt, indicating spatial heterogeneity. The river sediments show a weak impact on loess deposits. We emphasize the urgency of reassessing the dust contribution of the farmost source areas such as the Taklimakan Desert and Gurbantunggut Desert to the CLP. The Barrovian metamorphism of the Lepontine dome is manifested by isograds that cross‐cut tectonic nappe contacts, which is commonly interpreted as metamorphism that occurred after nappe emplacement. However, the pervasive mineral and stretching lineation in amphibolite facies, associated with top‐to‐foreland shearing, suggests that peak Barrovian conditions are coeval with nappe‐overthrusting. Here, we combine mapping and U‐Pb zircon dating to better constrain the relation between metamorphism and overthrusting. Metamorphic zircon rims show two age populations at 31–33 and 22–24 Ma. The younger population is locally observed in post‐foliation dikes (and associated metasomatism) likely sourced from deep‐migmatites exhuming along the Alpine backstop. The older population occurs regionally and is found in syn‐kinematic migmatites which occur along a crustal‐scale shear zone. Below this shear zone, magmatic and detrital zircon cores suggest that the Cima Lunga unit, previously interpreted as a tectonic mélange with Mesozoic fragments, was a pre‐Variscan metasedimentary sequence intruded by Permian granitic sills, now orthogneisses. This unit was strongly sheared along the top of the Simano nappe during overthrusting of a rock pile here‐termed Maggia‐Adula nappe. This large‐scale nappe emplacement imprinted the regional lineation and peak temperatures until 31–33 Ma. Péclet (1–10) and Brinkman (0.002–1.8) numbers, estimated for the overthrusting, suggest an advection‐dominated heat transfer caused by rock exhumation, with some diffusion (conduction) during nappe emplacement. Diffusion contributed to Barrovian isograds discordant to the thrust. Shear heating was important if stress times shearing rate >∼5·10−6 W·m−3 within the nappe. The thermal evolution after overthrusting was spatially heterogeneous until ca. 22 Ma. Plain Language Summary: The Lepontine area constitutes the core of the Central European Alps. It has a dome structure and it is internally formed by rock units which register pressure and temperature conditions typical of collisional orogens. The temperatures recorded by minerals are high and the origin of the heat that affected the Lepontine units is still unclear. In this study, we implemented different branches of geology to reveal the age of the Alpine events which juxtaposed the Lepontine units, their provenance and evolution. We performed extensive geological mapping to define the lithologies and structures of rocks. From 13 samples, we extracted 1158 zircon crystals that we analyzed and dated. Fieldwork permitted us to discover new rock units and better characterize the transition between the large‐scale units constituting the Lepontine dome. We propose a geodynamic scenario involving a major large‐scale Alpine unit. The emplacement of this unit generated the main heating event at 31–33 Ma, which is widespread and resulted in peak temperature conditions. The thermal evolution after this event was regionally complex and spatially heterogeneous. Locally in the south we document magmatic/fluid injections at 22–24 Ma, which were sourced from still‐hot regions in the roots of the orogen. The extent of fracture development is associated with the degree of enrichment of a natural gas reservoir and its productivity. Based on numerical simulation results of the paleotectonic stress field, a set of evaluation methods for determining the degree of development of reservoir tectonic fractures were established using rock rupture criteria. Taking the fourth member of the Leikoupo Formation in the Pengzhou area of western Sichuan as an example, a finite element (FE) method was employed to simulate the paleo-tectonic stress field during the period of fracture development, and the degree of tectonic fracture development was further evaluated using the above methods. The results indicated that effective fractures were created in the Himalayan period. In this time, mainly NE–NEE and nearly E–W strike tectonic fractures were developed in the target layer. The fractures were mainly low-angle and oblique fractures, while the high-angle fractures were less developed. According to the integrative fracture index (F), five typical fracture development areas were determined: the fault zone, and the northern, eastern, southeastern, and central regions of the study area. After 70 years of development, magnetotelluric (MT), a remote sensing technique for subsurface electrical resistivity imaging, has been widely applied in resource exploration and the deep tectonic evolution of the Earth. The electrical resistivity anomalies and their quantitative interpretation are closely related to or even controlled by the interconnected high-conductivity phases, which are frequently associated with tectonic activity. Based on representative electrical resistivity studies mainly of the deep crust and mantle, we reviewed principal electrical conduction mechanisms, generally used conductivity mixing models, and potential causes of high-conductivity including the saline fluid, partial melting, graphite, sulfide, and hydrogen in nominally anhydrous minerals, and the general methods to infer the water content of the upper mantle through electrical anomaly revealed by MT. The tectonic evolution of the Karakoram fault in the Pamir Plateau is controversial because the timing and kinematics of several branches of the fault system are unclear. Here we conduct field observations on the East Pamir fault, the North Muskol shear zone, and the Xindi-Waqia fault in the eastern Pamir, and obtain zircon U-Pb and biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages from these ductile shear zones. All three faults/shear zones are hosted by granitic mylonites. The East Pamir fault is a northwest-striking, normal-dextral shear zone that cuts the Rushan-Pshart suture. Zircon U-Pb dating yields a mean age of 201.5 ± 0.5 Ma for the mylonites in this shear zone. Biotite 40Ar/39Ar analysis yields two weighted mean plateau ages, 10.65 ± 0.13 Ma, and 11.04 ± 0.15 Ma. An undeformed granitic vein that cuts the ductile shear zone gives a mean zircon U-Pb age of 9.6 ± 0.3 Ma. We interpret that the granitic protolith crystallized at 201.5 Ma, and the East Pamir fault underwent rapid cooling and exhumation at ca. 11 Ma and ceased by 9.6 Ma. The North Muskol shear zone is an east-striking extensional shear zone along the northern boundary of the Shatput-Muztaghata dome. Two mylonitic samples show mean 206Pb/238U ages of 17.9 ± 0.2 Ma and 17.6 ± 0.3 Ma, which are interpreted as the timing of crystallization of the granitic protolith. The Xindi-Waqia fault is a northwest-striking ductile shear zone and brittle fault that bounds the Muztaghata dome. We obtain two zircon U-Pb ages (231.8 ± 1.1 Ma, 235.9 ± 0.9 Ma) and two biotite 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages (between 6.60 ± 0.10 Ma and 6.87 ± 0.10 Ma) from the mylonites in this fault, and interpret that the granitic rocks were emplaced in the Late Triassic and exhumed in the late Miocene. The newly obtained U-Pb ages, combined with the previously published data, indicate that Rushan-Pshart suture in Pamir marks the closure of an ocean basin within the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean, and cannot be correlated with the Bangong-Nujiang suture in Tibet. We establish a systematic correlation in which the two Palaeo-Tethyan sutures (Tanymas-Jinshajiang and Rushan-Pshart) in Pamir represent the western extensions of the Jinshajiang and Longmu Co-Shuanghu sutures in the Tibetan Plateau, respectively, and the Central Pamir is the western extension of the Tianshuihai-North Qiangtang terrane. This indicates that the dextral slip along the Karakoram fault system in east-central Pamir is 140 ± 10 km, and the mean slip rate since the onset of the Karakoram fault at ca. 18 Ma is 7.8 ± 0.5 mm/yr. Furthermore, our analyses suggest that the North Muskol shear zone was active at ca. 18 Ma before the arrival of the Karakoram fault system then. The East Pamir fault must have been active at ca. 11 Ma, but ceased by ca. 9.6 Ma, and the slip along the Karakoram fault system migrated northeastward and primarily accommodated by the Tashkurgan fault soon after 9.6 Ma. The Xindi-Waqia fault is the southern extension of the ductile shear zone of the Kongur Shan extensional system, as they are highly similar in geometry, kinematics, and timing. Overall, as the Karakoram fault system propagated northward in Pamir during the Cenozoic, crustal deformation migrated northeastward among the Karakoram fault branches from Ladakh to the Kashgar-Yecheng transfer system, and a complex evolution path can be portrayed. Intra-oceanic arcs are one of the major building blocks of continents, and the rarely exposed calc-alkaline plutons in intra-oceanic arcs are a critical component of arc crust. These calc-alkaline plutons provide juvenile crustal materials to the continental crust, and thus their petrogenesis has important implications for the formation and evolution of continental crust. Here, we present the results of an integrated study, involving field investigation, petrology, geochronology and geochemistry, on calc-alkaline intermediate–felsic plutons and their mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) within a Proto-Tethyan intra-oceanic arc in the Lajishan terrane of the Qilian Orogen, northern Tibetan Plateau. These calc-alkaline intermediate–felsic plutons range from gabbroic diorites, through diorites, to granodiorites. In situ zircon U–Pb dating demonstrates that these plutons were emplaced in the Early Paleozoic (474–460 Ma), slightly older than previously identified 460–440 Ma intra-oceanic arc volcanics (boninites, ankaramites, high-Mg basaltic andesites, high-Al andesites, sanukites) in the Lajishan terrane. The geochemistry of these plutons indicates that they were differentiation products of subduction-metasomatized arc mantle-derived melts, and isotope modeling constrains that their mantle source was metasomatized by less than 10% addition of slab-derived fluids/melts. Their parental melts experienced polybaric medium- to high-pressure fractional crystallization to generate the compositional variation of these plutons. There are two types of MMEs according to their different geochemistry (high- and low-MgO MMEs) and both of them are early crystallized melts derived from the heterogeneous subduction-metasomatized arc mantle wedge, captured by evolving magmas. Alkaline high-MgO MMEs represent near-primitive alkaline melts derived from melting of pyroxenite with phlogopite-enriched veins in the heterogeneous arc mantle wedge, while low-MgO MMEs stand for relatively evolved calc-alkaline melts formed during differentiation of the melts parental to their host. The upper crustal construction of this Proto-Tethyan intra-oceanic arc was achieved through earlier emplacement of 474–460 Ma calc-alkaline plutons followed by slightly later eruption of arc volcanics at 460–440 Ma above these plutons. As approximated by the composition of these calc-alkaline plutons and arc volcanics, the upper crustal composition of this Proto-Tethyan intra-oceanic arc is still juvenile and primitive. This juvenile intra-oceanic crust was accreted to continental blocks through arc–continent collision at 440–420 Ma, in response to closure of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. The accreted intra-oceanic crust represents addition of juvenile crustal materials to existing continents and has remained primitive and intact, which could be balanced by other more evolved crustal components to form a mature bulk continental crust. Natural olivine from the Etna Fall Stratified eruption (3930 BP) was dehydrated to determine hydrogen diffusivity. Dehydration was carried out in several time-steps, from 0.5 to 40 cumulative hours, in a 1 atm. furnace at 810 and 1000 °C. This starting material has high H 2 O concentration (∼50 ppm), high forsterite (Fo ∼ 90 %), and high fO 2 (∼NNO + 1.2), reflecting characteristics of its host magma. H 2 O concentration was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy after each heating step. Spectral peaks were fit with Gaussian curves to determine the contribution from each H+ defect. Zonation profiles along each crystallographic direction were modelled using the 'whole-block' method to determine bulk and defect-specific H+ diffusivity. Our modelling reveals a common apparent diffusivity for all defects, which is faster along ([1 0 0]) than b ([0 1 0]) or c ([0 0 1]) by more than an order of magnitude. A common defect-specific diffusivity has not been found in experiments on pure forsterite, so it appears that the presence of Fe enables H+ from all defects to diffuse via the proton-polaron mechanism (supported by the observed anisotropy). However, the rates that we observe are slower than the proton-polaron mechanism, which supports the recent proposal by Ferriss et al. (2018) that the apparent diffusivity is rate-limited by reactions between H+ bound in defect sites and Fe2+. A coupled reaction and diffusion process may explain the observed decrease in diffusivity along a over time, as well as an apparent non-zero H 2 O concentration at the crystal edge. Both of these effects need to be considered when modelling H+ diffusion profiles to determine decompression rate – fixing the edge concentration to zero will underestimate the diffusion timescale. A comparison of experimental dehydration studies on natural olivines reveals that the diffusivity during dehydration likely depends on how the olivine was experimentally hydrated. To avoid this experimental effect and understand the diffusivity operating during ascent in a volcanic conduit, crystals which are naturally hydrous (such as the Etna olivines in this study) are particularly useful. Despite some ambiguity in the literature owing to different experimental approaches, our results suggest that for the studied range of pressure and temperature, forsterite content is the major control on H+ diffusivity, while H 2 O concentration and the fO 2 at which the crystal last equilibrated have a smaller effect within the ranges studied for magmatic olivines. During late Carboniferous time, the residual ocean basin gradually closed in West Junggar and only a small amount of seawater remained in the Hala'alat Mountain area, where discussions of provenance and tectonics are limited. In this study, LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating and heavy mineral identification are conducted on the upper Carboniferous tuffaceous sandstones from the Hala'alat and Aladeyikesai formations in the Hala'alat Mountain area. The results reveal the low maturity of the clastic sediments, indicating proximal deposition. The Hala'alat Formation detrital zircons present a single peak (c. 330 Ma). Speculatively, the primary provenance is the Boshchekul–Chingiz Arc, and the secondary sources are the Darbut Tectono-Magmatic Belt and island arcs in the basin. The main peak and provenance of the Aladeyikesai Formation are similar to those of the Hala'alat Formation. Moreover, several age groups, namely, 370–344 Ma, 427–404 Ma and 478–476 Ma, potentially correspond to provenances of the Darbut Tectono-Magmatic Belt, the Boshchekul–Chingiz Arc and the Kujibai–Hongguleleng Ophiolitic Mélange Belt. In addition, the maximum depositional ages of the Hala'alat and Aladeyikesai formations calculated are 314.6 ± 1.54 Ma and 330.8 ± 0.61 Ma, respectively. Comprehensive analysis shows a relatively singular provenance of the Hala'alat Formation. While the provenance of the Aladeyikesai Formation shows inheritance, the provenance area extends northwards to the Kujibai–Hongguleleng Ophiolitic Mélange Belt. Furthermore, the closure of the Junggar Ocean during Carboniferous time caused the potential source region of the Hala'alat Mountain area to migrate northeastwards from Barleik Mountain to Xiemisitai Mountain. A-type granites are typically formed in stable intra-plate, back-arc or postcollisional settings and are characterized by highly ferroan and potassic major element compositions, and by strong enrichment in incompatible trace elements. Unlike I-, S- and M-type granites, where the letters denote the dominant source material (igneous, sedimentary or mantle derived), there is no consensus on the source and processes giving rise to A-type magmas. In this contribution, a conceptual model for the origin of A-type granitoids, using the Bornholm A-type granitoid complex in southern Fennoscandia as an example, is presented. In this model, underplated mantle-derived basaltic magma may develop into intermediate and siliceous A-type magma, which is ferroan, potassic and highly enriched in incompatible trace elements, through a combination of fractional crystallization leading to cumulate formation, and partial melting and crustal assimilation, in a process akin to zone refining in metallurgy. The key factor is a relatively stable tectonic environment (postcollisional, anorogenic, or extensional), where there is little or no replenishment of more primitive basaltic magma to the system, allowing it to attain more evolved, enriched and extreme compositions. Several orogenic/sediment-hosted gold deposits are widely distributed in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. This study combines U-Pb dating with the isotope composition of lead as well as gold content in ore and magmatic rock-hosted pyrite. It aims to investigate the age of gold mineralization and possibly establish a link between gold mineralization and magmatic intrusion in the district. The results show that the S-type magmatic rocks yield crystallisation ages ranging from 204.1 ± 4.7 Ma to 223 ± 3.2 Ma with low magnetic susceptibility measurements below 3 × 10−3 SI unit. These ages fit within the 200–250 Ma Pb-Pb model age of the Pb isotopic composition of K-feldspars. Pyrite trace element mapping has shown that gold and lead show zoning patterns occurring at the same time in pyrite. The Pb isotope composition of the cores of pyrite grains indicate that the approximate model age of gold mineralization is 200 Ma. This age is close to 197–199 Ma (Early Jurassic), previously determined by K-Ar dating of sericite which was interpreted to be the age of gold mineralization. In this study, gold content varies up to 793 ppb in the analysed magmatic rock-hosted pyrites, indicative of a likely magmatic contribution to gold mineralization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Travertines formed of crystalline crust have been widely reported, but there has not been focus on their geochemical characteristics. We therefore carefully conducted a series of geochemical investigations and U-Th dating on a travertine mound mainly composed of crystalline crust from Sobcha (southwest China) to determine their geochemical features and geological implications. The Sobcha travertines dominantly consist of granular crystals and fan crystals and show δ13C from 3.4‰ to 4.9‰ V-PDB, δ18O from −26.7‰ to −23.7‰ V-PDB, and 87Sr/86Sr from 0.712458 to 0.712951. When normalized to PASS, the Sobcha travertines exhibit MREE enrichment relative to HREE and LREE, HREE enrichment relative to LREE, and positive Eu anomalies. The δ13C signatures and mother CO2 evaluation of the Sobcha travertines show that the Sobcha travertines were thermogene travertines largely receiving mother CO2 from (upper) mantle (i.e., magmatic CO2) or a mixture of soil-derived CO2 and CO2 related to carbonate decarbonation. The 87Sr/86Sr of the Sobcha travertines is out of the 87Sr/86Sr ranges of local deposits exposed at Sobcha and surrounding areas but is well matched with the mean 87Sr/86Sr of Nadi Kangri volcanic rocks which cropped out to the northeast of the studied travertines (over 20 km away). This might indicate the important role of the Nadi Kangri volcanic rocks in suppling Sr to the studied travertines, but more studies are required. The LREE depletion compared to MREE and HREE in the Sobcha travertines was interpreted to be caused by the difference in geochemical mobility between LREEs and HREEs during water–rock interaction at depth, while the MREE enrichment compared to HREE was considered to be most likely inherited from reservoir/aquifer rocks. The positive Eu anomalies of the Sobcha travertines may result from very high reservoir temperatures and/or preferential dissolution of Eu-rich minerals/rocks (especially plagioclase). The Sobcha travertine mounds displays no or very slight vertical variations in δ13C, 87Sr/86Sr, and REE patterns, indicating the compositional stability of mother CO2 and paleo-fluids. However, a significant vertical increase in δ18O was observed and was explained as the result of gradual water temperature decrease related to climate cooling, self-closure of the vents, or mound vertical growth. The Chakabeishan (CKBS) deposit is the first pegmatite-type Li-Be deposit discovered in the eastern North Qaidam Tectonic Belt (NQTB) of Tibetan Plateau. The correct understanding of its petrogenesis and the precise determination of its formation age are of great significance for further regional prospecting and the discovery of new economically valuable rare-metal deposits. Therefore, a systematic study of texture, major-element composition, and U-Pb dating of columbite-tantalite group minerals (CGMs) in the spodumene pegmatite dyke from the CKBS deposit was undertaken. Three types of CGMs were identified, including concentric oscillatory ferrocolumbite (CGMs-1), homogeneous ferrocolumbite (CGMs-2), and irregular ferrotantalite (minor manganocolumbite) with abundant early ferrocolumbite replacement remnants (CGMs-3). The zoning patterns and chemical compositions in the CGMs record the complex evolutionary history of their host pegmatite from the magmatic stage (CGMs-1, disequilibrium crystallization) to the magmatic-hydrothermal transition stage (CGMs-2, equilibrium crystallization) and then to the late metasomatic stage (CGMs-3, replacement/re-equilibrium). CGMs U-Pb dating results suggest that the spodumene pegmatite dyke (No.15) emplaced at 230.1 ± 2.6 Ma. Subsequently, it experienced fluid metasomatism at 221 ± 5.3 Ma. Based on the new age data and published geochronological data, it can be concluded that the spodumene pegmatite dykes in the CKBS deposit formed in an oceanic subduction-related setting, representing a new metallogenic event in western China. Except for the CKBS deposit, a large number of rare-metal pegmatite dykes have also been discovered in the eastern NQTB, indicating that the eastern NQTB may be an important potential rare-metal metallogenic belt that should be explored in detail and arouse painstaking attention. The West Qinling orogen in central China, formed from continental collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons in the Late Triassic, hosts numerous gold deposits with a total Au endowment of about 2000 t. Most deposits were emplaced at ca. 250–195 Ma and are genetically associated with the Triassic orogenesis. Here in situ U-Pb titanite dating with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry indicates the Ma'anqiao gold deposit in the northern portion of this orogen has a distinctive age and under a contrasting tectonic regime. This structurally controlled gold deposit is hosted in Late Ordovician to Early Silurian sub-greenschist facies metasedimentary rocks. The gold mineralization is hosted in quartz-pyrite-pyrrhotite veins and pyrite-pyrrhotite disseminations in hydrothermally altered rocks, which are crosscut by K-feldspar-calcite-chlorite±pyrite veins. Titanite, present both in the disseminated sulfide ores and later veins, was used for in situ U-Pb dating. Titanite from three disseminated sulfide ore samples with Th and U averaging 27.46 and 39.31 ppm (1 ppm=1 µg g−1), respectively, yielded lower-intercept ages of 121.1±3.1 to 120.7±3.5 Ma (2σ) in the Tera-Wasserburg diagram. Titanite from three later vein samples with much lower Th and U concentrations averaging 2.74 and 16.21 ppm, respectively, yielded overlapping ages of 120.8±3.2 to 120.3±5.8 Ma (2σ). These new titanite U-Pb ages tightly constrain the formation of the Ma'anqiao gold deposit at ca. 121–120 Ma and, when combined with independent geological data, indicate it is not related to the Triassic Qinling orogeny. Rather, its formation is attributed to lithospheric thinning and destruction of the North China craton during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous which has generated numerous gold deposits along the southern margin of this craton. This catastrophic event caused extensive magmatism in large areas of the North Qinling terrane and northern edge of the West Qinling orogen immediately to the south of the North China craton. The heat flux and elevated geothermal gradients associated with this magmatism could have induced prograde metamorphism of the Paleozoic sedimentary infrastructure in and beneath these areas with the derived fluids ascending along pre-existing crustal-scale regional structures to form the Ma'anqiao gold deposit. We suggest that areas in the North Qinling terrane that have been affected by the Late Mesozoic magmatism are potential targets for future exploration of the decratonization-related gold deposits. Additionally, this study highlights the use of titanite U-Pb dating as a robust geochronometer for metasedimentary rock-hosted gold deposits in Phanerozoic orogens, which has previously not been utilized. The tectonic evolution of the Proto‑Tethys in the East Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB) is controversial. Herein, new petrological, whole-rock geochemical, zircon U–Pb geochronological and zircon Lu–Hf isotopic data for early Paleozoic intrusive rocks in the Delite region are reported. LA-ICP-MS zircon U–Pb isotopic data show that the Delite monzogranite and quartz syenite were formed at 437.0 ± 2.9 Ma and 424.8 ± 2.2 Ma, respectively. The Delite monzogranite contains high SiO2, Al2O3 and K2O and A/CNK ratios, but low MgO and Mg# values (33–38). This study considers that the monzogranite is a typical S-type granite and originated from partial melting of ancient crustal clastic material (metagreywacke) in a syn-collision setting. The quartz syenite is K-rich and Mg-poor, with low Mg# values (36–41), exhibiting geochemical signatures of an alkalic syenite derived from partial melting of basaltic lower crust in a post-collision setting. Combining with the previous work, we suggest that in the middle part of the EKOB the Proto-Tethys closed at ca 437 Ma with a post-collisional setting after ca 427 Ma. Zircons LA-ICP-MS U–Pb isotopic data indicate that the Delite monzogranite and quartz syenite were formed at 437.0 ± 2.9 Ma and 424.8 ± 2.2 Ma, respectively. The Delite monzogranite was formed in a syn-collision setting. The Delite quartz syenite was related to the post-collision setting. This paper aims to analyze the deformation characteristics and constrain the deformation time of the Gudonghe ductile shear belt in the Yanbian area, NE China, the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Two stages of ductile deformation have been identified according to the macro- and micro-fabric characteristics. The NWW-trending D1 deformation, with pervasive dextral shearing and extensional features as indicated by shear folds and δ-porphyroclasts, occurred in the Early–Middle Triassic Yongxin pluton based on zircon U–Pb age of 246–236 Ma and previously published geochronological data, and the foliation was cut by an undeformed igneous rock of ~ 226 Ma; therefore, the D1 deformation time in the Gudonghe ductile shear belt is limited to the 236–226 Ma. The NE-trending D2 deformation event occurred in the Early Jurassic Baijin pluton. The S–C fabrics and σ-porphyroclasts in the D2 deformation stage show a pervasive sinistral shearing and were formed in a compression setting. Two deformed granites in the D2 deformation stage have a weighted mean age of 197 Ma, while the syn-tectonic granitic vein during the D2 deformation stage has a weighted mean age of 184 Ma. The undeformed granites, which intruded into the Early Jurassic Baijin pluton, have a weighted mean age of 179 Ma. Therefore, the D2 deformation of the Gudonghe ductile shear belt occurred during 184–179 Ma. Considering the regional tectonic evolution and the structural features of the Gudonghe ductile shear belt, the D1 deformation event could be related to the Middle–Late Triassic post-orogenic collapse after the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, while the D2 deformation was formed in a compressional setting and was related to the onset of westward-directed subduction and accretion of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean in the Early Jurassic. The cumulative expression of multistage deformation is complex multiperiod fractures, which are commonly seen in tectonic zones. The Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation in the western Sichuan Basin Depression, China, is a typical marine carbonate reservoir with natural fractures caused mainly by tectonic movements. According to outcrops, drill cores, image logging, and fluid inclusions, the fracture characteristics, types of natural fractures, and interactions of fractures are determined. In total, 419 natural fractures in 493.2 m of cores from 7 wells are investigated, which are mainly shear and tensile fractures with a small number of weathering generated fractures. Meanwhile, the results of the stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ18O, as well as the flow fluid inclusion data, reveal four tectonic periods of fractures with different occurrences. Based on the history of regional tectonic evolution, indicating one period of weathering fractures ascribable to stratal uplift and three periods of structural fractures related to the sequential tectonic movements of the Longmenshan fault belt. By analyzing the interaction relationships of fractures, three types of fracture interaction relationships are observed: cutting, restraining, and overlapping. The four stages fractures are chronologically assigned to (1) the early Indosinian N-S trending compression, (2) the late Indosinian NW-SE compression, (3) the middle Yanshanian NE-SE compression, and (4) the early Himalayan E-W compression. The influence of natural fractures on gas migration and well production in marine carbonates is discussed, and indicates that tectonic fractures could provide seepage channels for gas migration and accumulation from near or distant hydrocarbon source rocks into the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation. The Indochina Block is considered as a part of the Indian and Australian margins of Gondwana, and the Tam Ky‐Phuoc Son Suture Zone (TPSZ) lies in its central region as the boundary between the Truong Son Belt and Kon Tum Massif (KTM). However, the early Palaeozoic tectonic nature and timing of magmatism within the TPSZ are still controversial. To tackle the issue, we present herein the zircon U–Pb ages with their trace‐element compositions of five dioritic–granitic granitoids in the TPSZ. U–Pb age dating of magmatic zircons from them suggests emplacement ages of ca. 447–450 Ma. Whole‐rock geochemistry of the samples shows low TiO2 contents (0.36–1.18 wt%) and Mg# (42.04–53.07). They display enrichment in light rare earth elements ([La/Yb]N = 4.10–15.19), pronounced negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies relative to the chondrite‐normalized rare earth element patterns and primitive mantle‐normalized trace‐element distribution diagrams. The whole‐rock geochemical characteristics together with zircon trace‐element compositions from the same samples revealed their petrogenesis of a continental arc tectonic setting. Combining the results from this study together with available data from the TPSZ and its neighbouring units, we suggest accretionary orogenesis was responsible for generation of the Ordovician magmatic arc in the KTM, which will provide better understanding of the Early Palaeozoic evolution of the eastern Indochina Block. It is generally believed that the lithospheric mantle and the mantle transition zone are important carbon reservoirs. However, the location of carbon storage in Earth's interior and the reasons for carbon enrichment remain unclear. In this study, we report CO2‐rich olivine‐hosted melt inclusions in the mantle xenoliths of late Cenozoic basalts from the Penglai area, Hainan Province, which may shed some light on the carbon enrichment process in the lithospheric mantle. We also present a detailed petrological and geochemical investigation of the late Cenozoic basalts and mantle xenoliths from northern Hainan Island. The collected samples of late Cenozoic Hainan Island basalts belong to both alkaline and subalkaline series, showing fractionated REE patterns with high (La/Yb)N values of 3.52–11.77, which are typical for OIB. Based on Al‐in‐olivine thermometry, the temperatures estimated for the mantle xenoliths can be divided into two groups. One group has temperatures of less than 1050°C, and the other group has temperature ranging from 1050°C to 1282°C. Clinopyroxene (La/Yb)N–Ti/Eu and clinopyroxene Ca/Al–Mg# diagrams indicate that the mantle peridotite experienced metasomatism from both silicate and carbonate melts. Melt inclusions in the olivine of mantle xenoliths include (1) CO2 bubble–rich melt inclusions; (2) multiphase melt inclusions (glass + CO2 bubble + daughter minerals); (3) pure glass melt inclusions. Magnesite is a daughter mineral in the olivine‐hosted melt inclusions, which could be interpreted as a secondary mineral formed by the interactions of CO2‐rich fluids with an olivine host, due to post‐entrapment effects. The glasses in olivine‐hosted melt inclusions have high SiO2 contents (60.21–77.72 wt%). Our results suggest that a considerable amount of CO2‐rich melt inclusions are captured in the lithospheric mantle during metasomatism. The lithospheric mantle can therefore act as is a 'carbon trap', with much CO2 being absorbed by the lithospheric mantle in this way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
