This paper focuses on the potential of storytelling as a means of influencing students to become engaged with science and to choose a career in a STEM field. Given the role that leaders can play in motivating and influencing people and considering Nikola Tesla a leader in the fields of electrical engineering and science, the paper identifies Tesla's leadership traits, as these emerge from his life story, that is, actual historical events regarding his life and his scientific/technological work. These leadership traits refer to (a) imaginative thinking and innovation, (b) persistence/perseverance, and (c) vision, and point to the need for empirical studies to document the effectiveness of the Nikola Tesla story to motivate and influence students. The significance of the Nikola Tesla story for science education is also discussed.

Conducting marine mammal research can raise several important ethical issues. For example, the continuation of whaling for commercial purposes despite the international moratorium provides opportunities for scientists to obtain data and tissue samples. In 2021 we analysed 35 peer-reviewed papers reporting research based on collaborations with Icelandic whalers. Results highlighted little consideration or understanding of the legal and ethical issues associated with the deliberate killing of whales amongst those researchers, funding bodies, universities and journals involved. Ethical statements were rarely provided. Those that were written were incomplete. Whilst research using whaling data may seem acceptable to some, it often becomes hard to justify when subject to scrutiny by the media and the public. Thus, there is a particular danger of reputational harm for early career researchers who may become unwittingly involved in such activities. Here we also consider the broader variety of ethical issues raised by non-lethal research (both historical and recent) on marine mammals including tagging and biopsy. We discuss instances where study animals were harmed or even killed and where the public mistook tags for harpoons. Without clear guidelines, reviewers and journal editors are put in an impossible position when considering whether to reject papers on ethical grounds. We propose that for such studies, universities, funders, journals, and permit issuers must require ethical assessments and that journals more effectively implement their existing policies on publishing ethical statements. The professional marine mammal societies need to work together to produce modern ethical guidance. Such guidance should require transparency in the provenance of data and samples while including advice on law, welfare issues, involvement of local scientists, and offshoring. Furthermore, it should require appraisal of and justification for the absolute necessity of invasive procedures. As is already the case in biomedical disciplines, ethical statements should be required in marine mammal science.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education research and physics education research, in particular, are currently struggling with a dearth of research into understanding the experiences and identity development of neurodivergent students. In addition, an even larger gap in research exists looking into nonacademic members who have left the field and still strongly identify with their disciplinary identity. As valued members of our physics community, these colleagues provide a unique perspective as to how identity and participation are nurtured and developed, particularly among rising disabled physicists. To resolve these current issues and aid in future research, we operationalize our new Critical Disability Physics Identity framework and present results from interviews with three neurodivergent post-baccalaureate nonacademic physicists (those who have left physics and retain a strong affinity toward their identity as a physicist). As the first paper in a four-part phenomenological study into the identity development of neurodivergent physicists, we also present an analysis of each interview through a Critical Disability Physics Identity lens and discuss the implications of their Critical Disability Physics Identity development. We find that neurodivergent students experience very little outright discrimination and violence but experience structural ableism in the form of assessment that is not constructed for how neurodivergent physicists perform physics-related tasks. Additionally, we find that neurodivergent physicists seem to ground identity in having a strong interest in physics, something that is only shaken by professors and others in power being neutral toward the discrimination experienced by neurodivergent people. We find that there are very large power imbalances between professors and neurodivergent students and that only when professors and others in power are actively anti-ableist is this power imbalance remedied and neurodivergent students begin to feel that they are physicists.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of science theater plays on secondary school students' attitudes towards the subject of science and their views on scientists. The study was conducted with 38 seventh-grade secondary school students over a six-month period. The "Scale of Attitudes Towards the Subject of Science" and the "Opinion Survey About Scientists" were used to collect the quantitative data, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for the analysis of the obtained data. For the collection of the qualitative data, the compositions written by the students and the researcher's observation notes were used, and the obtained data were subjected to inductive content analysis. In the study, it was concluded that the science theater plays were highly effective in changing secondary school students' attitudes towards the subject of science. On the other hand, it was determined that the activities had no effect on the students' views of scientists. The results obtained from the qualitative data reveal the advantages of science theater plays for students, as well as their contribution to students' personal development. The findings were discussed in the light of the literature and recommendations were made for further research in line with the results. Previous studies in STEM education's context found that many students failed to connect between the knowledge they learned in class, the skills they acquired and the applications of the knowledge to real-life situation. They also perceived STEM lessons as rigid, drab, fixed, and a limited platform because they could not see STEM as an integrated disciplines and the interconnecting concepts across the disciplines. For students' benefits, this study explores their views on STEM lessons to incorporate their needs in designing integrated STEM instructional practices through Scientist-Teacher-Students Partnership (STSP) initiative. Embracing a qualitative research design, the researchers adopted a purposive sampling strategy to select six (6) secondary school science students as informants. Semistructured interviews were used to explore the informants' insights on STEM lessons. Based on the analysis of the interviews, three (3) themes have emerged, which are (1) Instructional practices in Science Classroom, (2) Issues in STEM learning, and (3) Students' demand in STEM lessons. However, this paper will only discuss the first theme of the study with four (4) categories namely, teacher-driven, content laden, drilling and practice techniques and instructional aids. This needs analysis study concludes that STEM teachers' instructional practices still heavily focus on a teacher-centered approach and preparing students for the examination. Hence, aspects like students' involvement, engagement and meaningful learning which are lacking in practice will be considered by the researchers in designing integrated STEM instructional practices through the STSP initiative.

In this paper, we report ethnicity trends in student participation and experience in high school science and engineering fair (SEFs). SEF participation showed significant ethnic diversity. For survey students, the approximate distribution was Asian-32%; Black-11%; Hispanic-20%; White-33%; Other-3%. Comparing the SEF level at which students competed from school to district to region to state levels, we observed that black students made up only 4.5% of the students who participated in SEF beyond the school level, whereas students from other ethnic groups were more equally represented at all levels. The lower percentage of Black students resulted from a combination of lower overall participation in SEF and lower percentage of those students who did participate to advance to SEFs beyond the school level. Students who advanced to SEFs beyond the school level frequently received help from scientists, coaching for the interview, and were not required to participate in SEF. Black students received the least help from scientists, were least likely to receive coaching for the interview, and were most likely to be required to participate in SEF. They also were most likely to receive no help from parents, teachers, or scientists. Asian and Hispanic students (63.8% and 56.8%) indicated a greater interest in careers in science and engineering (S&E) compared to Black and White students (43.7% & 50.7%). In addition to career interest, the most important experiences that correlated with students who indicated that SEF increased their interests in S&E were getting help from the internet, books and magazines; getting help fine tuning the report; and overcoming obstacles by doing more background research, making a timeline, and perseverance. Black students did not report a positive effect of any of these strategies but experienced time pressure as more of an obstacle than did other students. Our findings identify a wide range of student experiences associated with positive SEF outcomes that could be enhanced for all students but especially Black students. More involvement of scientists in helping students who participate in SEFs would be particularly valuable.

Students' action competence must be taught and developed, particularly for prospective science teachers, to have a pedagogical perspective as environmental educators. As indicated by publications in respected journals, researchers' focus and alignment on the issue of action competence are highly expected. This systematic literature review aims to compare the findings of research articles published by Web of Science-indexed journals. The keyword used to find the articles on the Web of Science's database was "action competence," which discovered 193 publications. Furthermore, 25 articles met the criteria to be analyzed. Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis was the inclusion and exclusion model used. In the last three years, research focused on action competence has increased. The research employed several methods, i.e., qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and development research. Jelle Boevede Pauw and Wanda Sass were the authors who frequently published research that focused on action competence. The keyword action competence was directly associated with environmental education, sustainable development, education-based learning for sustainable development, and evaluation. The authors who published their research with this focus were from 16 countries, mainly from Europe, i.e., Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark. The continent diversity of authors who contributed articles indicated that the action competence issue had become a global concern. Furthermore, it was found that the number of non-collaborating publications (universities or countries) was higher than those collaborating, even though single authors rarely wrote the articles. The recent trend shows that publications are authored by scientists with various backgrounds such as fields, universities, and even countries. The authors of this paper developed and proposed eight ideas to be reflected by prospective science teachers or science teacher education providers in educating future science teachers concerned about action competence about sustainable development.

Students in environmental sciences, ecology, or wildlife management are often reluctant to acquire training in basic laboratory techniques. To advocate the importance of this training, we reviewed literature in the fields of biological and environmental science for one frequently used technique--centrifugation--and evaluated whether centrifugation parameters are properly expressed. Centrifugation is used to extract and purify different types of biomolecules for further characterization or quantification. The repeatability of the procedure depends on the proper identification of parameters defining the gravitational force applied to a solution, for example the duration, distance from central axis, and angular velocity. Correctly expressing rotation velocity--the "speed"--is therefore crucial to ensuring repeatability and the possibility of using the same protocols in different laboratories. When scrutinizing the materials and methods sections of publications in ecology, zoology, botany, or general biology journals, we noticed that velocity is expressed in different ways and essential information is often missing. We sampled 2000 articles in different fields of biological sciences that recorded centrifugation as a technique in the materials and methods section. We found centrifugation velocity to be properly expressed in gravitational force "g" in only 47.8% of the papers. The score dropped to 40.4% in journals specialized in ecology. We use this analysis to advocate for a minimum of training in the techniques of biochemistry that are of common use in environmental sciences. Better training would allow higher reproducibility of results in scientific publications.

Social capital concept has become popular over the past decades. What is not known in literature and worth investigating is the network designs and nature that enhance the development of new learning ideas and knowledge creation. The aim of the paper is to examine network structure dimensions, namely centrality (bonding) and structural holes (bridging or looser ties) of social capital formed within higher education networks that stimulate the development of new ideas and knowledge creation of the participants in the networks across multiple domains of science. This study employs negative binomial regression on a sample of participants within a higher education network to predict the development of new ideas and knowledge creation. The results show that the different features of social capital dimensions influence the development of new ideas and knowledge creation of the participants in the networks differently. Specifically, the study reveals that the brokerage network appears to be more relevant than cohesion in the Ghanaian higher education institution networks. When knowledge creation is decomposed into different fields of science, Health Science is found to be the most productive. The decomposing of the knowledge creation into different fields of science remains a value of this study.

LGBT+ persons in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have a small growing body of literature addressing their experiences and workplace concerns. This study offers workplace climate analysis of 324 survey respondents in the field of physics. The findings indicate that when building a climate model to predict for consideration to leave and outness, a positive workplace climate was a stronger predictor than a negative workplace climate or experiences of exclusionary behavior. This points to the importance of moving beyond workplace climates that are simply neutral, but to ones that are inclusive and welcoming for LGBT+ physicists. For young women, inbound identity trajectories into physics are generally regarded as exceptional. In this study, we investigated the experiences that young women have which may support their sustained interest and achievement in physics, and their ongoing inbound trajectories into post-secondary physics education. To understand these experiences, we look to the role of informal physics learning (IPL) environments as spaces which can offer resources that support women's trajectories into physics. In this paper, we highlight the important role of what we call "university-adjacent" IPL experiences--internships, summer schools, and associations that connect secondary students with the research lives of physicists. Focusing on case studies of six women enrolled in post-secondary physics programs across Sweden, we identify the various forms of resources made available through IPL environments, and how these create possibilities for young women to engage in forms of identity work that contribute to the construction of new possible selves in physics. Findings suggest that young women can access important relational and ideational resources through university-adjacent IPL programs. Relational resources included (a) supportive social networks, (b) enduring relationships, and (c) relatability. Importantly, our research finds that IPL opportunities that emphasize relationship building can create immersive experiences which go beyond representation and rather emphasize opportunities to develop "practice-linked identities." Ideational resources emerged as (a) sources of information which possibilized physics for participants, and (b) types of information that provided possibilities to learn about the life of a physicist. Finally, while we claim that IPL experiences provide important possibilities for young women to immerse themselves in the practices of physics, we also discuss that these kinds of experiences remain inaccessible to most students, and thus reproduce a certain elitism in the field.

Scientists from various fields have long examined the factors contributing to sustainable development in Africa. The paper investigates the topic of sustainable development focusing on a very special part of Africa, the Sahel region, which is an ecoclimatic and biogeographic region of Africa facing many challenges. Consequently, the secondary research to be presented in this paper aims to review some projects and actions taken by various organizations, like the United Nations and the African Union, that stimulate sustainable development in the Sahel region. Accordingly, it focuses on a few of those projects and actions, which, on the one hand, enable sustainable agriculture, the reduction of malnutrition and food insecurity, and water usage combined with latrine construction, and which, on the other hand, enhance natural resource management and increasing resilience to climate change. The paper concludes with some remarks regarding the efficacy of these projects and actions from the viewpoint of sustainability, and finds that even though these projects and actions are of significance, there is still a long road ahead to reach sustainable development in the Sahel region. The scientific impact and rankings are considered important metrics for determining national recognition and prestige, as well as for determining scientific priorities and funding. This paper analyzes the distribution of leading scientists across all scientific fields and countries, examining the similarity graphs between them. Our analysis also reveals further regional and continental patterns. By measuring the correlation between top scientists with GPD data, we show that the ratio of scientists maintains a high correlation with the GDP per capita. We also study the link between the scientific performances of a country (in terms of top research personnel it hosts) with its economic wealth. Finally, we analyze the case of Greece and show that the scientific impact of a country changes significantly when we take into consideration its scientific personnel that has migrated abroad (i.e., brain-drain). The terms "offshore" and "open ocean" have been used to describe aquaculture sites that are further from the coast or in higher energy environments. Neither term has been clearly defined in the scientific literature nor in a legal context, and the terms are often used interchangeably. These and other related terms (for example "exposed", "high-energy") variously refer to aspects of a site such as the geographic distance from shore or infrastructure, the level of exposure to large waves and strong currents, the geographic fetch, the water depth, or some combination of these parameters. The ICES Working Group (ICES, 2024) on Open Ocean Aquaculture (WGOOA) therefore identified a need to define the terminology to reduce ambiguity for these types of aquaculture sites or more precisely, to: (1) promote a common understanding and avoid misuse for different classifications; (2) enable regulators to identify the characteristics of a marine site; (3) allow farmers to be able to assess or quantitatively compare sites for development; (4) equip developers and producers to identify operational parameters in which the equipment and vessels will need to operate; (5) provide insurers and investors with the terminology to consistently assess risk and premiums; and (6) circumvent the emergence of narratives that root in different cognitive interpretations of the terminology in public discourse. This paper describes the evolution of the use of the term "offshore aquaculture" and define the most relevant parameters to shift to a more definitive and robust term "exposed aquaculture" that can inherently relay clearer information. Adoption of this more definitive definition of "exposed" will allow the user to define a site with more than just distance from shore. Key differences and the importance of these terms are discussed that affect various interest groups. Follow-up articles in this compilation from scientific members of the WGOOA as well as other scientists outside ICES are incorporated that develop a set of definitions and a rigorous exposure index. The exponential development of wireless applications has increased problems in the spectrum. The unlicensed frequency spectrum is becoming highly saturated, in order to support the conditions of new radio devices with increasing data rates. The spectrum that has previously been allocated is also unused. As a consequence of these developments, scientists have been putting a lot of effort into developing an approach to the issue of the limited spectrum that could make it possible to create a more effective utilization of it. As cognitive radio permits opportunistic use of the licensed spectrum in less crowded areas, it has been proposed as a solution to this challenge. This paper provides an overview of the cognitive radio environment, including a dynamic spectrum access strategy, as well as additional information on the cognitive capabilities operating in combination IoT communication technologies. We investigate the utilization of cognitive radio in the Internet of Things along with the significant role that cognitive radio plays in making the Internet of Things possible. Cognitive radio will provide a comprehensive examination of spectrum sensing, which will cover the many types of sensing, sensing that is based on machine learning, as well as open topics that still need to be addressed further in this sector. Introduction: The role of personality in shaping engagement with aesthetics in science has been almost entirely unexplored. Whereas artists and arts settings (e.g., museums) are well-studied from a psychological perspective, the practice of science has often been seen as purely rational or dry. In response, this study presents novel findings on the critical role of scientists' individual differences, which shape their engagement with aesthetics, such as the frequency of their experiences of beauty, wonder, and awe in their scientific work. Methods: Based on a very large and representative four-country study of scientists in the fields of biology and physics (N = 3,092), this study analyzed the associations of Big Five personality traits among scientists with (i) dispositional aesthetics (DPES-awe), (ii) the frequency of aesthetic experiences in scientific work, and (iii) aesthetic sensitivity in science. These survey-weighted OLS regression models included extensive statistical controls for sociodemographic factors. Results: As hypothesized, openness is positively, and neuroticism is negatively linked with dispositional aesthetics, the frequency of aesthetic experiences in scientific work, and aesthetic sensitivity in science. Unexpectedly, agreeableness and conscientiousness (but not extraversion) are highly significant and strong predictors of the three trait and state aesthetic engagement variables. Discussion: The aesthetic engagement and personality framework of this paper is empirically supported and demonstrates the importance of personality types of scientists in the practice of science. The unexpectedly strong association of agreeableness with aesthetic engagement points to the importance of cooperation, collaboration, and communication to maximize scientific creativity. In the post-pandemic era, lifelong learning (LLL) emerged as the key to professional development and the core competency of all disciplines. Even globally, there is a dearth of evidence based bibliometric analysis, notably on LLL. This study addresses this gap by examining the data retrieved from the Elsevier Scopus database. A systematic search method was adopted to retrieve 1806 publications from 790 journals from 1963 to 2022. The R package, Biblioshiny, was used for data analysis, including productivity/performance analysis, citation analysis, and collaboration network analysis of social structure. The findings showed that the number of publications has significantly increased over time. A large number of studies were published in 2022. Overall, 85 countries contributed to LLL. Among them, the United States was the most productive with 787 publications, and the United Kingdom was the country with 4731 citations. Learning was the trending topic, and skill development was an emerging theme in LLL. The results will aid the stakeholders in identifying largely unexplored areas of research that need more attention and funding. This study outlines not only the current scientific developments but also the potential future of LLL research. This study will also be used as a resource for researchers and teachers in LLL. This paper introduces CloveBiotech, an extension and optimization of CLOVE, which is designed to accurately classify complex structural variants (SVs) resulting from genetic modifications in the genomes of microbial strains. While CLOVE covers various complex SV types, it lacks support for large insertions, targeted vector integrations and substitutions of genes with a marker cassette. CloveBiotech addresses these limitations by modifying the algorithm to handle more diverse SV scenarios, including new fusion patterns. However, covering these scenarios demanded a major rewrite of multiple classes and functions. Performance evaluations on simulated data demonstrate its improved precision and recall rates of up to 0.92 and 0.96 respectively, across different sequencing parameters. With these enhancemanets, CloveBiotech provides a valuable tool for scientists working with genetically modified microorganisms, facilitating accurate SV detection and classification. Abstract: Air Quality Index (AQI) is derived from a series of observations of different air pollutants for reporting air quality. The severity of air pollution and its impacts on the general public are typically reported using the air quality index. Different methods have been developed by various regulatory agencies and scientists, to calculate the AQI using aggregation methods involving critical pollutants. This paper presents a comparison between conventional AQI and Fuzzy AQI. 20 sampling locations were chosen for Vadodara city in order to investigate the effects of urban air pollution, and ambient air quality was measured twice a week from October 2017 to February 2018. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) method formulas were used to calculate the traditional Air Quality Index using the measured values of Coarse particulate matter (PM10), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), and Oxides of nitrogen (NOX). Additionally, the membership functions were provided as input to the Mamdani fuzzy inference system (FIS) for the fuzzy logic system, and the fuzzy air quality index (FAQI) was calculated. The computed conventional AQI values were compared with FAQI values. A close co-relation was observed between conventional AQI and fuzzy AQI values. The application of the fuzzy inference system demonstrates its capability to manage difficult issues including data ambiguity. The findings clearly show that the FIS is capable of resolving inherent discrepancies and interpreting complex conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smallholder farming systems are important for global food security, but these faces multiple environmental challenges hindering sustainable development. Although sustainable smallholder agriculture issues have been widely discussed and addressed by scientists globally, harmonized approaches in evaluating sustainability are still lacking. This paper proposes a five-step process for constructing a sustainability assessment method for smallholder farming systems, namely definition of system boundary & functional unit, indicator selection, indicator weighting, indicator conversion, and indicator aggregation. The paper summarizes the state-of-art progresses in agricultural sustainability assessment at different stages, and systematically discussed the benefits and limitations of weighting and aggregation methods. Overall, this evaluation process should be useful by providing rational and comprehensive results for quantifying the sustainability of smallholder farming systems, and will contribute to practice by providing decision-makers with directions for improving sustainable strategies. Background: Trust in science and scientists has received renewed attention because of the "infodemic" occurring alongside COVID-19. A robust evidence basis shows that such trust is associated with belief in misinformation and willingness to engage in public and personal health behaviors. At the same time, trust and the associated construct of credibility are complex meta-cognitive concepts that often are oversimplified in quantitative research. The discussion of research often includes both normative language (what one ought to do based on a study's findings) and cognitive language (what a study found), but these types of claims are very different, since normative claims make assumptions about people's interests. Thus, this paper presents a protocol for a large randomized controlled trial to experimentally test whether some of the variability in trust in science and scientists and perceived message credibility is attributable to the use of normative language when sharing study findings in contrast to the use of cognitive language alone. Objective: The objective of this trial will be to examine if reading normative and cognitive claims about a scientific study, compared to cognitive claims alone, results in lower trust in science and scientists as well as lower perceived credibility of the scientist who conducted the study, perceived credibility of the research, trust in the scientific information on the post, and trust in scientific information coming from the author of the post. Methods: We will conduct a randomized controlled trial consisting of 2 parallel groups and a 1:1 allocation ratio. A sample of 1500 adults aged =18 years who represent the overall US population distribution by gender, race/ethnicity, and age will randomly be assigned to either an "intervention" arm (normative and cognitive claims) or a control arm (cognitive claims alone). In each arm, participants will view and verify their understanding of an ecologically valid claim or set of claims (ie, from a highly cited, published research study) designed to look like a social media post. Outcomes will be trust in science and scientists, the perceived credibility of the scientist who conducted the study, the perceived credibility of the research, trust in the scientific information on the post, and trust in scientific information coming from the author of the post. Analyses will incorporate 9 covariates. Results: This study will be conducted without using any external funding mechanisms. Conclusions: If there is a measurable effect attributable to the inclusion of normative language when writing about scientific findings, it should generate discussion about how such findings are presented and disseminated. Introduction. The purpose of this paper is to research an evaluation method for the development trend of the scientific impact of individual scientists before and after different key nodes in scientific careers. Method. This paper focuses on scientists at universities in Shanghai who obtained their first key programmes from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) from 2011 to 2015. A two-node piecewise linear regression is used to divide the scientists' individual academic trajectories. The Boston Consulting Group matrix (BCG-M) model is used to propose four types of talent. Analysis. The pr(y)-index is applied to evaluate the scientists' impact. Several characteristics of the trajectory of the impact of individual scientists are defined by the change in the pr(y)-index growth rate. Results. The scientific impact of most scientists (66% and 62%) increased after they first obtained NSFC funding or their first key programme, respectively. Climate change in the Himalayan mountain region is an important component of global climate change. Several studies have provided evidence for climate change in this region as well as insights into its dynamics. Most of these, however, have focused on the physical aspects of climate change. As a result, these studies have paid relatively less attention to its social and economic dimensions. This paper examines the social-economic impacts of climate change by focusing on how apple farmers in the Shimla district of the Western Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh in India have been experiencing climate change and responding to it. It also compares the apple farmers' knowledge of climate change to that of the scientists. This study is based on a combination of primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. In this paper, we address the numerical posterior error control problem for the Bayesian approach to inverse problems or recently known as Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification (UQ). We generalize the results of Capistran et al. (2016) to (a priori) expected Bayes factors (BF) and in a more general, infinitedimensional setting. In this inverse problem, the unavoidable numerical approximation of the Forward Map (FM, i.e., the regressor function), arising from the numerical solution of a system of differential equations, demands error estimates of the corresponding approximate numerical posterior distribution. Our approach is to make such comparisons in the setting of Bayesian model selection and BFs. The main result of this paper is a bound on the absolute global error tolerated by the numerical solver of the FM in order to keep the BF of the numerical versus the theoretical posterior near one. For two examples, we provide a detailed analysis of the computation and implementation of the introduced bound. Furthermore, we show that the resulting numerical posterior turns out to be nearly identical from the theoretical posterior, given the control of the BF near one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diversity in science is necessary to improve innovation and increase the capacity of the scientific workforce. Despite decades-long efforts to increase gender diversity, however, women remain a smallminority inmany fields, especially in senior positions.Thedearth of elite women scientists, in turn, leaves fewer women to serve as mentors and role models for young women scientists. To shed light on gender disparities in science, we study prominent scholars who were elected to the National Academy of Sciences. We construct author citation networks that capture the structure of recognition among scholars’ peers.We identify gender disparities in the patterns of peer citations and show that these differences are strong enough to accurately predict the scholar’s gender. In contrast, we do not observe disparities due to prestige, with few significant differences in the structure of citations of scholars affiliated with high-ranked and low-ranked institutions. Broomrape as an obligate parasite that threatens tobacco production (Nicotiana tabacum L.), has destructive effects on its characteristics. The reduction in yield caused by this parasite is so great that sometimes farmers are forced to leave their fields due to the severity of the infection. Since the stages of contamination and pathogenicity mainly occur underground, and the major damage of the parasite to host plants produce before the diagnosis of contamination, the development of effective controlling strategies is a great challenge in front of scientists. Unfortunately, no control method (agricultural, chemical, mechanical, etc.) has been effective so far. The lack of effective agro-chemical controlling methods makes the need more obvious for biotechnological methods. Host resistance as an integrated pest management method is a multifaceted process that can occur at several stages of the parasite's life cycle; before attaching to the host during root penetration, or after attaching to the phloem. In recent years, various breeding activities have been started to develop "Orobanche-resistant" genotypes. In this paper, the conducted research activities on the genetic variability and resistance of tobacco to broomrape have been reviewed. In this paper, we want to refute the notion that the microbiota should be considered an organ, given that an organ comprises tissue of similar or different embryological origin, while the microbiota is a pool of different microbial species originating individually from single replications and not from a common ancestral cellular element. Hence, we would like to propose a new morphological interpretation of its nature, based on the comprehensive context in which these microbes live: a muco-microbiotic layer of hollow organs, such as the airways and the bowel. The above concept should represent not only a new terminological annotation but also a more accurate portrayal of the physiology and pathophysiology of these organs. Indeed, a better understanding of the biological nature of this part of the human body can help scientists develop more specific experimental protocols, potentially leading to the establishment of better therapeutic strategies. A research object (RO) is defined as a semantically rich aggregation of (potentially distributed) resources that provide a layer of structure on top of information delivered as linked data (Bechhofer et al. 2013, Soiland-Reyes et al. 2022). A RO provides a container for the aggregation of resources, produced, and consumed by common services and shareable within and across organisational boundaries. This work sees research digital objects as composites which may consist of objects hosted in different repositories. In catalysis research, the characterisation of a sample may require analysing experimental data obtained from an instrument, data from a computer model, and/or comparing to data from a specialized database. Additionally, data may need to be reduced and cleaned before analysis, resulting in intermediate data. In this scenario the composite research object is integrated by all these data objects and their corresponding metadata. UK Catalysis Hub (UKCH) researchers perform these tasks as part of their day-to-day work. However, most of the time they need to manually collect, catalogue, and preserve all these data assets. The UKCH aims to support researchers with tools and services for the management and processing of data, through the development of the Catalysis Data Infrastructure (CDI Nieva de la Hidalga et al. 2022a) and the Catalysis Research Workbench (CRW Nieva de la Hidalga et al. 2022b). This work is integrated in the context of the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI Coles and Knight 2022). The PSDI aims to provide a layer that enables transparent access to existing resources whilst ensuring that they remain dedicated to its specific application. The intention is to explore the concept of the composite research digital object and the services required to facilitate both human and programmatic interactions with those objects to browse, review, retrieve, and use digital objects in the context of the research produced by UKCH scientists. The CDI will act as a thematic portal presenting data managed through the PSDI and serve as an example for the development of similar portals targeting specific research domains. In this case, the CDI is in the process of being redesigned with a sematic metadata model. The basic ontologies being considered for this model are: DCAT (Albertoni et al. 2022) will encode the metadata of digital objects; PROV-O (Belhajjame et al. 2013) will track the generation of digital objects. SPAR (Peroni and Shotton 2018) to encode publications data; SCHOLIX to encode the links between publications and data objects (Burton et al. 2017); FOAF (Brickley and Miller 2014) to encode researcher information; the Organization Ontology (ORG Reynolds 2014) to encode institution information; EXPO (Soldatova et al. 2006) to encode experiment information; and various domain specific ontologies for adding metadata about experiments, for instance CHEBI (Hastings et al. 2011), CHEMINF (Hastings et al. 2015), and FIX (Chebi-Administrators 2005). The implementation of the CDI using these ontologies will provide a roadmap for the integration of FAIR data object repositories with a service infrastructure which supports reproducibility, reuse of data, reuse of processing tools and implementation of advanced processing tools. The integration of the CDI and CRW with existing and new infrastructures will further support the work of catalysis scientists. In this context, a researcher can access the CDI to look for publications, see if there are data objects linked to them, and then look for processing tools which can be used to reproduce the results. An experiment for an early use case demonstrated the feasibility of reproducing published results using data and metadata linked to existing publications (Nieva de la Hidalga et al. 2022b). In the experiment, papers citing processable data were used to retrieve, process, and reproduce published results with no need for contacting the authors. Fig. 1 presents a view of the experiment performed. The current practices of publishing catalysis research data can be seen as aligned to the FAIR data principles, for instance Fig. 1 above can be also seen as Fig. 2 Reproducing results required several human-centered activities, partly due to the encoding of the metadata as text documents. The challenge is to accelerate and automate these processes. It is important to highlight the role of cataloguing interfaces, such as the CDI, containing DO crates with only metadata and links to the different data assests that constitute the composite digital objects. The users of these interfaces will in turn rely on transparent services which do not require them to manually track the location and formats of the data assets they want to retrieve and use.
