Search

Research on the geological process of the Xing'an -- Mongolia Orogenic Belt has attracted the attention of scholars both domestically and internationally. Its genesis and tectonic location may help revealing the geological processes asscoaited with the evolution of the Xing'an -- Mongolia Orogenic Belt. This study focuses on the development of the Permian granitic complex in Jielin Ranch, and we conduct systematic geological, petrographic, zircon U-Pb chronology, Hf isotope, and geochemical tracing of rock elements for evidence. The results show that the granitic complex is mainly composed of monzogranite and syenogranite, which obtained zircon U-Pb ages of 291.1 ± 1.1 Ma and 260.8 ± 1.1 Ma, respectively. The monzogranite and syenogranite are all acidic and aluminum rich rocks, and the monzogranite is a potassium rich, high potassium calcium alkaline rock series with relatively low REE content, high degree of fractionation, and insignificant europium anomalies, enriched with LILE (Rb, Th, U, K), deficient elements such as Ba, Sr, Nb, Ti, and P, εHf(t) values are from +4.1 to +7.0 (TDM2=1130-920 Ma). Geochemistry shows that the monzogranite belongs to high fractionation of I-type granite, which formed in a subduction-compressional or extension tectonic environment, and Middle Neoproterozoic lower crust rocks as the major source material of magma. The syenogranite is a potassium high potassium transitional rock series with a high rare earth content (214 x 10-6~325 x 10-6), low LREE/HREE (2.54-6.41), δEu (0.04-0.15) and the typical "four component effect" fractionation mode is enriched in large ion lithophilic elements such as Rb, Th, K, and strongly depleted in elements such as Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta, Ti, P, εHf(t) values are from +4.2 to +8.6 (TDM2=738-1228 Ma), suggesting the characteristics of an "A2 type" granite. The magma originated from partial melting of the lower crust of the Middle and Neoproterozoic with the participation of mantle derived melts, and was formed in a back-arc extensional environment. This suggests that the study area experienced a subduction-compressional or extension tectonic environment during the early Permian and a brief backarc extension process in the late Permian. The Qilian orogenic belt (QOB) located in the northeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau is featured by remarkable crustal thrusting and shortening, providing a key natural example to understand the lithospheric deformation of the Tibetan Plateau. Two types of continental collision are observed in the QOB: lithosphere subduction beneath Southern Qilian and crust underthrusting of Alxa terrain along the North Border Thrust (NBT). Deep seismic reflection profiles reveal complex stress field evolution, including compressional deformation in the lower crust, extensional deformation in the upper crust, and detachment deformation in the middle crust. In this study, we use 2D numerical modeling to investigate the dynamics of these two different collision types and the evolution of Qilian uplift. Model results suggest three patterns of continental collision, i.e., crust underthrusting follows lithosphere subduction, lithosphere subduction and the failed underthrusting/subduction. The key factors that may influence model evolution, including crustal rheology, convergence direction and rate, are systematically investigated. Our model results are further compared to observations, suggesting that lower convergence rate and crust underthrusting along NBT likely control the uplift and crust stress stratification of the QOB. This paper describes secondary crystallized melt inclusions trapped in magnesiochromite of lherzolite xenolith from the V. Grib kimberlite pipe (Arkhangelsk diamondiferous province). It is shown that the inclusions are microportions of melt related to magmatism, which was further formed this pipe. Daughter minerals assemblage of inclusions in magnesiochromite contain Na‒K‒Ca-, Na‒Mg-, Ca‒Mg-, Mg-, and Ca-bearing carbonates; Na–Mg carbonates with additional PO , Cl–, and SO anions; chlorides; sulfate; phosphate; and silicate. The mineral assemblage of daughter phases, the amount of carbonates (77 vol %) and silicates (tetraferriphlogopite) (15 vol %) and Ca : Na : K ratios within the inclusions indicate that this melt was an alkali-enriched carbonate liquid with a low content of SiO2 (≤6 wt %) and H2O (≤0.6 wt %). As is known, serpentine in kimberlites is a major H2O-bearing mineral, but the problem of water sources during serpentinization of kimberlites and an actual H2O content in kimberlite melts is a controversial issue. The absence of serpentine and the low H2O content (≤0.6 wt %) of the studied melt inclusions in comparison with those of kimberlites of the V. Key metals important for the green energy transition concentrate during magmatic-hydrothermal processes. In porphyry deposits, epithermal mineralization can overprint earlier higher-temperature systems. It is not well understood whether mineralization occurs in a single evolving system or forms during pulsed, episodic overprinting events. The timing and duration of fluid flow therefore remain key data gaps in deposit models, but they are essential factors for understanding metal (re)mobilization and concentration processes. Carbonates are common gangue minerals that precipitate during fluid flow and can be dated using the U-Pb method, thereby directly dating hydrothermal processes. Here, 41 new U-Pb dates from a fault-controlled porphyry-epithermal system in Yukon, Canada, reveal a >50 m.y. record of carbonate precipitation between ca. 77 and 19 Ma. Results support a model of pulsed, episodic fluid flow, rather than a single evolving system, where epithermal carbonate precipitation at ca. 74–67 Ma was both coeval with and significantly postdated Cretaceous porphyry-related magmatism. Overprinting events at ca. 62–56 Ma, ca. 51–47 Ma, and younger than 40 Ma were not responsible for primary metal deposition but may have contributed to metal enrichment. Carbonate dates coincide with periods of brecciation and fault slip. Fault movement therefore enabled episodic overprinting by epithermal mineralization, mobilizing and (re)concentrating metals. This comprehensive reconstruction of a long-lived magmatic-hydrothermal system tracks the transition from porphyry to epithermal environments, demonstrating the power of carbonate U-Pb dating for critical minerals research. Dating the onset of ancient (>1 Ma) karstification is a challenge. One approach is to date the earliest calcite cements in speleothems. We show the benefits of in situ U-Pb dating directly on thin sections from ancient (ca. 30 Ma) thin (<1 mm) speleothems in the karstified Lower Oligocene lacustrine-palustrine carbonates of the Paris Basin (France), which cannot be dated using other methods. We dated 32 calcite rafts (a type of speleothem), one geopetal cement, and 10 calcite cements precipitated along the karstic walls. The ages of the calcite rafts and cements at 29 ± 1 Ma (Lower Oligocene) fall within the age range of the host deposits (≈29 Ma) previously deduced from palaeontological evidence. We demonstrate that cementation of the carbonate host rock, its dissolution, and the speleothem precipitation occurred within 2 m.y. after deposition. Ostracods and intraclasts trapped within Rupelian calcite rafts clearly indicate that the karst developed deep underground shortly before a phase of lacustrine-palustrine sedimentation at the surface. This very early dissolution episode is attributed to the uplift of the Paris Basin as a result of the far-field intraplate deformation induced by the alpine orogenesis. This study shows that in situ U-Pb geochronology on ancient calcite rafts is a promising technique for the indirect dating of karstification and, more broadly, for dating geodynamic events and diagenetic evolution of sedimentary basins. The chemical and isotopic characteristics of a solidified pluton represent the integration of magmatic and sub-solidus processes operating across a range of spatial and temporal scales during pluton construction, crystallization, and cooling. Disentangling these processes and understanding where chemical and isotopic signatures were acquired requires the combination of multiple tools tracing processes at different time and length scales. We combine whole-rock oxygen and Sr-Nd isotopes, zircon oxygen isotopes and trace elements, and mineral compositions with published high-precision U-Pb zircon geochronology to evaluate differentiation within the bimodal Guadalupe Igneous Complex, Sierra Nevada, California (USA). The complex was constructed in ~300 k.y. between 149 and 150 Ma. Felsic magmas crystallized as centimeter- to meter-sized segregations in gabbros in the lower part of the complex and as granites and granophyres structurally above the gabbros. A central mingling zone separates the mafic and felsic units. Pluton-wide δ18O(whole-rock), δ18O(zircon), and Sr-Nd isotopic ranges are too large to be explained by in situ, closed-system differentiation, instead requiring open-system behavior at all scales. Low δ18O(whole-rock) and δ18O(zircon) values indicate assimilation of hydrothermally altered marine host rocks during ascent and/or emplacement. In situ differentiation processes operated on a smaller scale (meters to tens of meters) for at least ~200 k.y. via (1) percolation and segregation of chemically and isotopically diverse silicic interstitial melt from a heterogeneous gabbro mush; (2) crystal accumulation; and (3) sub-solidus, high-temperature, hydrothermal alteration at the shallow roof of the complex to modify the chemical and isotopic characteristics. Whole-rock and mineral chemistry in combination with geochronology allows deciphering open-system differentiation processes at the outcrop to pluton scale from magmatic to sub-solidus temperatures over time scales of hundreds of thousands to millions of years. The Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash contain some of the highest topography in the Andes and provide insight into tectonomagmatic processes associated with the onset of flat-slab subduction. These adjacent ranges shared a similar history of deformation and exhumation prior to the late Miocene, when synconvergent extension began in the Cordillera Blanca. Magmatism in the Cordillera Huayhuash has been inferred as coeval with magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca. Yet, extension, which has been correlated with magmatic heat flow, is limited to the Cordillera Blanca. New zircon U-Pb dates and trace and rare earth element concentrations from the Cordillera Blanca batholith and the Huayllapa pluton in the Cordillera Huayhuash and reassessment of existing zircon data help to characterize regional magmatic processes prior to the establishment of flat-slab subduction. Two compositionally distinct samples of the Huayllapa pluton yielded mean ages of 24.8 ± 0.4 Ma and 25.4 ± 0.8 Ma. In contrast, the Cordillera Blanca batholith has a protracted crystallization history postdating that of the Cordillera Huayhuash by up to 20 m.y. Miocene magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca began at 19 Ma and ended with injection of large volumes of geochemically distinct, mantle-derived magma from 10 to 5 Ma. We suggest that 6–5 Ma magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca promoted elevated heat flow and reduced shear strength, which facilitated extensional shearing along the western slopes of the range, whereas colder amagmatic crust in the Cordillera Huayhuash inhibited southward propagation of faulting. Our data demonstrate that the linkages between magmatism and elevated heat flow identified in the Cordillera Blanca are important driving processes in initiating extension in cordilleran-style orogenies. The results of U–Pb Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ID-TIMS) geochronological studies of perovskite from kimberlite rocks of the Manchary pipe (Khompu-Maya kimberlite field, Central Yakutia) are reported. The obtained U–Pb age (472 ± 1 Ma) indicates the Early Paleozoic age of the formation of the Khompu-Maya field kimberlites and allows us to identify a new Aldan kimberlite subprovince within the Aldan anteclise. Based on the study of local volumes of minerals using the classical methods of isotope dilution and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (U–Pb ID TIMS), an isotopic study of pitchblende and galena is carried out at the Natali uranium ore occurrence (Northern Transbaikalia). For the first time, it was shown that the pitchblende mineralization at the ore occurrence has a Late Silurian (422 ± 4 Ma) age. Its formation is related to the Early–Middle Paleozoic collisional tectogenesis in the area of the Tonod uplift, accompanied by increased fluid activity. The Pb isotopic composition analysis in galena associated with pitchblende show that galena is enriched in radiogenic isotopes 206Pb and 207Pb, a source of which was ancient (Precambrian) concentrations of uranium. Late Carboniferous–Early Permian granitoids are widespread in the Tianshan area and their tectonic setting is controversially discussed. Our research presents fresh whole-rock geochemical and Pb isotopic data, along with zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic data for representative monzonitic and granitic intrusions in the Kumishi area. The aim is to decipher their magma sources and illuminate their geodynamic evolution. Zircon U-Pb dating results reveal that biotite monzonites in the Central Tianshan Belt were emplaced at 312.7 ± 2.9 Ma, while the quartz-monzonites and syenogranites in the South Tianshan Belt were formed at 284.5 ± 2.4 Ma and 283.4 ± 3.9 Ma, respectively. The biotite monzonites generally exhibit metaluminous and high-K calc-alkaline characteristics. They have a positive εHf(t) value (+4.9–+14.1), and are enriched in LREEs and LILEs but depleted in HREEs and HFSEs. These characteristics indicate that they were derived from a mixed magma source of the lower crust and the input of components derived from the mantle wedge above the subduction zone. The quartz-monzonites and syenogranites are high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic I-type granites, with εHf(t) values of +14.9–+15.5 and +6.6–+14.9, respectively. They are enriched in LREEs but depleted in HFSEs (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti), displaying relatively flat HREE patterns and negative Eu anomalies. The genesis of these rocks is attributed to a partial melting of the lower crust in which mantle-derived magmas participated, which was triggered by an upwelling asthenosphere in a post-collisional extensional geodynamic setting. These granitoids, together with regional analysis of other magmatism in the study area, suggest that the Kumishi area has experienced an evolution from subduction to post-collision from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian, which constrains the local closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The Uhelchulu quartz diorite-granodiorite intrusions in Xiwuqi, Inner Mongolia, are exposed along the northwestern margin of the Xilinhot microcontinental block, located within the central and eastern parts of the southeastern Hegenshan suture zone. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating yielded crystallization ages of (396 ± 8) Ma for the quartz diorite and (385 ± 5) Ma for the granodiorite, indicating an Early-Middle Devonian magmatic event. The quartz diorite exhibits I-type granite features, characterized by elevated Al2O3 (14.33–15.43 wt%), MgO (3.73–5.62 wt%), and Na (Na2O/K2O = 1.04–1.44), coupled with low P2O5 (0.15–0.20 wt%) and TiO2 (0.73–0.99 wt%). Trace element patterns show relative enrichments in Rb, Th, U, and Pb, while Nb, Ta, Sr and Ti are relatively depleted. Total REE contents are relatively low (123–178 ppm), with significant LREE enrichment (ΣLREE/ΣHREE = 4.75–5.20), and a non-obvious Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.75–0.84). In contrast, the granodiorite displays S-type granite characteristics, with high SiO2 (70.48–73.01 wt%), K (K2O/Na2O = 1.35–1.83), Al2O3 (A/CNK = 1.16–1.31), and a high differentiation index (DI = 76–82). Notably, MgO (1.44–2.24 wt%) contents are low, and significant depletions of Ba, Sr, Ti, and Eu are observed, while Rb, Pb, Th, U, Zr, and Hf are significantly enriched. Total REE contents are relatively low (178–314 ppm), exhibiting significant LREE enrichment (LREE/HREE = 6.17–8.36) and a pronounced negative Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.34–0.49). The overall characteristics point towards an active continental margin arc background for the Uhelchulu intrusions. Previous studies have suggested that the Hegenshan ocean continuously subducted northward from the Early Carboniferous to the Late Permian, but there is a lack of evidence for its geological evolution during the pre-Early Carboniferous. Therefore, this paper provides a certain basis for studying the geological evolution during the pre-Early Carboniferous in the Hegenshan ocean. We preliminarily believed that the Hegenshan ocean underwent a southward subduction towards the Xilinhot microcontinental block in the Xiwuqi area, at least from the Early Devonian to the Middle Devonian and the Hegenshan ocean may might have undergone a shift in subduction mechanism during the Late Devonian or Early Carboniferous. The Imourkhssen porphyry Cu±Mo±Au±Ag deposit is located at the Ouzellagh-Siroua Salient (OSS) straddling the boundary between the central Anti-Atlas and the central High Atlas. It is characterized by a typical porphyry-style mineralization. The volcanic rocks are intruded by numerous magmatic rocks of the Ouarzazate Group (580–539 Ma), referred to as the Late Ediacaran magmatic suites (LEMS). Of these, the Askaoun, Imourkhssen, and Imourgane granites are the most significant as they are related to the porphyry mineralization. The entire set is intruded by the Zaghar mafic dyke swarms. Zircon U-Pb dating of the Imourkhssen granite and the ore-bearing granite porphyry shows that these intrusive rocks were emplaced at 558 ± 1 and 550 ± 2 Ma, respectively. Moreover, the whole-rock major and trace element geochemistry reveal a high-K calc-alkaline I-type composition, consistent with an emplacement in a post-collisional setting under a trans-tensional tectonic regime. Ore bodies are hosted by the Askaoun granodiorite as well as the Imourgane granite. The mineralization occurs as fine-grained dissemination and infills of hydrothermally altered NNE–SSW to N–S trending veins and veinlets. Ore-related hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic, chlorite-sericite, serecitic, and propylitic mineral assemblages along with pervasive silicification and pyritization, providing a porphyry-style alteration pattern. The ore periods comprise supergene and magmatic-hydrothermal periods. The latter includes primary dissemination and secondary NNE–SSW to N–S ore-bearing system stages. The occurrence of molybdenite is either restricted to the potassic and chlorite-sericite alteration zones of the ore-bearing granite as fine disseminations or alternatively as veinlet infills within the propylitic halos. The molybdenite occurrences along with pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite dissemination are assigned to the primary ore stage, while the NNE–SSW to N–S ore-bearing system is related to the secondary ore stage. It consists of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, diagenite, sphalerite, hematite, galena, gold, and chenguodaite. The predominance of cockade and crack-and-seal textures suggest multiple episodes of ore-forming fluid circulations under epithermal conditions. The supergene stage is achieved by subordinate malachite, azurite, barite, hematite, epsomite, and chrysocolla. From the descriptions above, we argue that the Imourkhssen Cu±Mo±Au±Ag mineralization shares many mineralogical and paragenetic attributes of porphyry-copper deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hydrothermal dolomitization, facilitated by basement fault activities, had an important impact on the Permian Maokou Formation dolomite in the Sichuan Basin, which experienced complex diagenesis and presented strong reservoir heterogeneity. The source and age of diagenetic fluids in this succession remain controversial. In this study, various analyses were implemented on samples collected from outcrops and wells near the No. 15 fault in the eastern Sichuan Basin to reconstruct the multi-stage fluid activity and analyze the impact on reservoir development, including petrology, micro-domain isotopes, rare earth elements, homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions, and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb dating. The homogenization temperature of primary brine inclusions in fine-grained matrix dolomite and saddle dolomite is concentrated between 100 and 150 °C, which indicates that the impacts of abnormally high temperatures of other geological bodies. The δ13C and δ18O value and low 87Sr/86Sr value indicate that the diagenetic fluid of fine-grained matrix dolomite is mainly Permian seawater. The U-Pb ages of fine-grained matrix dolomite are ~260 Ma, which coincides with the age of the main magmatism of Emeishan Large Igneous Province (ELIP), and hydrothermal fluid provided a favorable high-temperature environment in the penecontemporaneous stage. While highly radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr compositions suggests those of saddle dolomite, the high-temperature Sr-rich formation fluid. The U-Pb ages of saddle dolomite are 245–250 Ma, which coincides with the age of the 255~251 Ma magmatism of ELIP. This indicates that those should be the diagenetic products of the ELIP hydrothermal fluid in the shallow burial stage. The U-Pb age of coarse-grained calcite is 190–220 Ma, and it should be the diagenetic product of the deep burial stage. Brine inclusions associated with primary methane inclusions were developed in coarse-grained calcite, with a homogenization temperature range of 140.8–199.8 °C, which indicates that the formation fluid activities were related to hydrocarbon charging. The Permian Maokou Formation dolomite was firstly formed in the penecontemporaneous shallow burial stage, and then it was subjected to further hydrothermal dolomitization due to the basement faulting and the abnormally high heat flow during the active period of ELIP. Hydrothermal dolomitization contributed to the formation and maintenance of intercrystalline and dissolution pores, whereas it also formed saddle dolomite to fill the pores, and reduce the pore space. The Lujiang–Chuzhou Metallogenic Area is an important component of the Middle–Lower Yangtze River Valley Metallogenic Belt. Despite being an important copper–gold deposit in this area, the Shanlixu skarn Cu-Au deposit has not yet been systematically studied. According to LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating, the quartz monzonite porphyry from the Shanlixu deposit is aged 137.5 ± 1.7 Ma: while it differs from the timing of the magmatism and related mineralization in the Lujiang–Chuzhou Area, it is consistent with magmatic activity elsewhere in the Middle–Lower Yangtze River Valley Metallogenic Belt. The Ce4+/Ce3+ values of zircon in the quartz monzonite porphyry vary from 204.5 to 886.5, indicating that the intrusion might have formed in an environment with high oxygen fugacity. Additionally, the quartz monzonite porphyry exhibits high contents of Al2O3, Sr, Ba, and Mg# (Mg# = Mg2+/(Mg2+ + Fe2+)) and low ratios of Y, Nb, Ta, and K2O/Na2O, showing geochemical characteristics similar to those of adakitic rocks. Based on these characteristics, it is suggested that the intrusion might have been derived from the partial melting of subducted oceanic crust under a continental arc margin setting. Furthermore, it is strongly indicated that the quartz monzonite porphyry from the Shanlixu deposit, in the Lujiang–Chuzhou Area, is closely related to Cu-Au mineralization, as suggested by the age of the intrusion, which is approximately 137 Ma. Miocene breakup of Svalbard from Greenland formed a deep oceanic gateway that enabled circulation between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, significantly changing the global climate. However, the timing of events remains unclear. An excellent opportunity to constrain this timing is found onshore western Svalbard, where the Sarsbukta fault forms the eastern margin of the Eocene–Oligocene Forlandsundet basin. Here, we present new results from U-Pb dating of calcite precipitated in fault-related veins to constrain the timing of Sarsbukta fault deformation and the evolution of the basin. Our oldest calcite age is Permo-Triassic, suggesting long-lived deformation along the fault. A cluster of ages between 41 and 33 Ma overlaps with fossil-based depositional ages from parts of the Forlandsundet basin. These data indicate that onshore transtension partly pre-dated the well-established Chron 13 (magnetic polarity time scale; 35.5–33.7 Ma) reorganization of spreading ridges in the North Atlantic. Our youngest age of 13 Ma indicates that faulting persisted long after the preserved basin fill was deposited. If seafloor spreading marked the end of extension of continental crust, Molloy Ridge spreading during Chron 5 (19.6–9.8 Ma) may have initiated after 13 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Kyzylkum Desert, as a transition area of different dust source in Central Asia, provides and reserves a large amount of dust transported by different atmospheric circulation systems, affecting Uzbekistan and downwind East Asia. However, there remains very few investigations about sediment sources and control factors of the desert. We hereby first present a provenance study on the Kyzylkum Desert, utilizing detrital zircon U‐Pb ages of samples composed of desert sand, alluvial sediments from Amu Darya River and piedmont of Southwest Tianshan Mountains. The results reveal that the Southwest Tianshan Mountains contribute the majority of the Kyzylkum desert sand, and the river system, dominated by Syr Darya, controls the sediment provenance of the desert. Moreover, little contribution from the Kyzylkum and Nurata segments indicates that wind erosion on the bedrocks is weak. However, the aeolian process is still crucial but deposit and storage of dust are determined by local topography. We investigate the potential provenance, spatial variability, and transport patterns of sand in the Kyzylkum Desert using detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology on 10 sediment samples. The results reveal that the Southwest Tianshan Mountains contribute the majority of the Kyzylkum desert sand, however, the proximal provenances also have a significant influence on the formation of the desert. The geomorphologic history shows that, the river system, dominated by Syr Darya, controls the sediment provenance of the Kyzylkum Desert. The wind displays little influence on the rework and recycle process of Kyzylkum Desert, indicated by inhomogeneous composition between northwest and southeast desert. The unmixing model results show evidence of sediments from the Kyzylkum Desert transported to the piedmont areas, but the transport and deposition of dust are primarily controlled by topography. The Northern Jiangsu Basin (NJB), located at the northeast edge of the Yangtze block, is not only rich in oil and gas resources but also contains abundant geothermal resources. Nevertheless, the distribution of geothermal resources at medium depth in the NJB is still unclear due to its complex geological structure and tectonic–thermal evolution process, which restricts its exploitation and utilization. The characteristics of the geothermal field and distribution of geothermal reservoirs within the NJB are preliminarily analyzed based on available temperature measurements and geothermal exploration data. The prospective areas for the exploration of deep geothermal resources are discussed. The analysis results show that (1) Mesozoic–Paleozoic marine carbonate rocks are appropriate for use as principal geothermal reservoirs for the deep geothermal exploration and development within the NJB; (2) the geothermal field is evidently affected by the base fluctuation, and the high-temperature area is mainly concentrated at the junction of the Jianhu uplift and Dongtai depression; (3) the southeast margin of Jinhu sag, Lianbei sag, the east and west slope zone of Gaoyou sag, the low subuplifts within the depression such as Lingtangqiao–Liubao–Zheduo subuplifts, Xiaohai–Yuhua subuplifts and the west of Wubao low subuplift, have good prospects for deep geothermal exploration. The Xiaonanshan–Tunaobao Cu-Ni-PGE deposit is located in the northern margin of the North China Craton (N-NCC) in central Inner Mongolia. However, the age, magma source, petrogenesis, and sulfide mineralization mechanism of the ore-related Xiaonanshan-Tunaobao pluton remain unclear. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates the Tunaobao pluton formed at 275.9 ± 2.8 Ma (Early Permian), similar to the Xiaonanshan pluton (272.7 ± 2.9 Ma). The ore-related gabbro is enriched in LREE and LILE (e.g., Rb) and depleted in HREE and HFSE (e.g., Nb and Ti). It likely originated from enriched mantle metasomatized by subduction fluids, supported by enriched Hf-Nd isotopes (–34.34 to –6.16 for zircon εHf(t) and –7.24 to –5.92 for whole-rock εNd(t) values) and high Ba/La but low Rb/Y ratios. The δ34S values of the Xiaonanshan sulfides range from 4.5‰ to 11.4‰, indicating a mantle origin with contribution from surrounding rocks. The Youjiang metallogenic province (YMP) is a famous ore-concentrating area in South China, known for its substantial Carlin-type gold deposits, antimony deposits, and mercury deposits. Previous studies have yielded conflicting views regarding the ages of mineralization in this area, particularly regarding the occurrence of Yanshanian versus Indosinian ore-forming events during the Mesozoic era. To resolve these discrepancies, this study utilized in situ LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating on carbonate minerals from the Lannigou Carlin-type Au deposit, the Lanmuchang Hg-(Tl) deposit, and the Sixiangchang Hg deposit to accurately determine their mineralization ages. Our results indicate that the three deposits formed at 137 ± 9 Ma, ~97 Ma, and 454 ± 21 Ma, respectively. By integrating previously reported geochronological data, we propose that the low-temperature Au-As-Sb-Hg-Tl deposits in the YMP were formed during two major periods, Late Triassic and Late Jurassic to Cretaceous, with the latter being more prevalent. Additionally, there was a Paleozoic hydrothermal mercury mineralization event at the northeastern edge of this region. These newly acquired data significantly enhance our understanding of multistage, low-temperature mineralization events in the YMP. Integrated geochemical, U-Pb zircon, and Pb isotopic data from granitoids of the Wulandele porphyry molybdenum deposit, northeastern Inner Mongolia, are reported to disclose the possible magmatic process and Mo ore-forming process. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating constrains the timing of the quartz diorite and monzonitic granite to 282 ± 2.4 Ma and 135.4 ± 2.1 Ma, respectively. The ages are accordant with geological facts which state that the shallow Permian granitoids are only the ore-hosting rock while the concealed Cretaceous fine-grained granite is the causative intrusion. Whole-rock geochemical data show that the granitoids belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series, and are enriched in LILEs, but depleted in HSFEs. Permian granitoids exhibit I-type characteristics, while Cretaceous granite is akin to A-type granite. Pb isotopic ratios are consistent between Permian granitoids and Cretaceous granite with ratios of 206Pb/204Pb = 18.048–18.892, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.488–15.571, and 208Pb/204Pb = 37.066–38.441. Considering geological and geochemical features together, Permian granitoids are interpreted as subduction-related continental margin high-K calc-alkaline rocks, while Cretaceous granite may be the result of the remelting of the relic Permian arc in an extensional environment induced by the rollback of the Paleo-Pacific plate. Different from classical porphyry-type deposits, the Wulandele Mo deposit, which formed in an intraplate tectonic setting, indicates that the intraplate porphyry Mo deposit should be one of the important exploration targets in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, especially its eastern segment. The northern margin of the North China Craton is one of the most important porphyry-skarn molybdenum ore belts in the world. The eastern Hebei Province, which contains a high number of molybdenum and gold (molybdenum) resources, is an important portion of the northern margin of the North China Craton. Xichanggou and Huashi, located in eastern Hebei, are quartz-molybdenum vein deposits that are intimately associated with intrusions that are deeply concealed in the mining area. This work presents two zircon U-Pb dates and ten molybdenite Re-Os ages from samples of the aforementioned two deposits in order to determine the timing of the intrusion and mineralization. The zircon U-Pb ages of the quartz monzonite porphyry from Xichanggou are determined to be 163.3 ± 0.3 Ma and 162.8 ± 0.4 Ma. The molybdenite Re-Os dating yielded ages of 160.3 ± 4.6 Ma for Xichanggou and 171.4 ± 19 Ma for Huashi, respectively. The isotopic composition of oxygen and hydrogen of the ore-forming fluid from Huashi, as indicated by the δDV-SMOW values (−80.0‰ to −67.6‰) and δ18OH2O values (−1.86‰ to 2.33‰), suggests that the fluid is primarily composed of water derived from magma, with some contribution from atmospheric precipitation. The sulfur isotope values (δ34S) of sulfides from Xichanggou range from 6.5‰ to 7.1‰, while the δ34S values from Huashi range from 3.3‰ to 4.9‰. The lead isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb and 207Pb/204Pb) of sulfides from Xichanggou and Huashi average at 17.414, 15.428, and 17.591, 15.379, respectively. The Re-Os isotopic compositions of ore sulfides mostly fall within the range of 318 ppm to 50,114 ppm. These isotopic compositions indicate that the materials responsible for the formation of the ores in Xichanggou and Huashi primarily originate from the melting of lower crust materials that have been contaminated by the mantle. Based on the regional data, the molybdenum deposits in eastern Hebei were formed in multiple periods, specifically approximately 170 Ma and 160 Ma in Huahsi and Xichanggou, respectively. The subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate during the middle–late Jurassic period led to the partial remelting of lower crust material, resulting in the acquisition of a significant quantity of metal elements (Mo), which were subsequently deposited. This paper presents a detailed study including LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating, geochemical, zircon Hf isotope, and whole rock Sr-Nd isotope analysis of magmatic rocks from the Yitong County, Jilin Province, NE China. These data are used to better constrain the Middle Silurian–Middle Devonian tectonic evolution in the eastern segment of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). Zircon U-Pb dating results show that the Ximangzhang tonalite formed in the Late Silurian (425 ± 6 Ma); the basalt, andesite, and metamorphic olivine-bearing basalt in the Fangniugou volcanic rocks formed in the Middle Silurian (428 ± 6.6 Ma) and Middle Devonian (388.4 ± 3.9 Ma, and 384.1 ± 4.9 Ma). The Late Silurian tonalites are characterized by high SiO2 and Na2O and low K2O, MgO, FeOT, and TiO2, with an A/CNK ratio of 0.91–1.00, characteristic of calc-alkaline I-type granite. They are enriched in Rb, Ba, Th, U, and K, and depleted in Nb, Sr, P, and Ti, with positive εNd(t) (+0.35) and εHf(t) (+0.44 to +6.31) values, suggesting that they mainly originated from the partial melting of Meso–Neoproterozoic accretionary lower crustal material (basalt). The Middle Silurian basalts are characterized by low SiO2, P2O5, TiO2, and Na2O and high Al2O3, FeOT, and K2O, enriched in Rb, Ba, Th, U, and K and depleted in Nb, Ta, Sr, P, and Ti, indicative of shoshonitic basalt. The Late Silurian tonalites have positive εNd(t) (+4.91 to +6.18) values and primarily originated from depleted mantle magmas metasomatized by subduction fluids, supplemented by a small amount of subducted sediments and crustal materials. The Middle Devonian volcanic rocks exhibit low SiO2, TiO2, and Na2O and high K2O, and MgO, enriched in Rb, K, and LREEs and depleted in Nb, Ta, Sr, and HREEs, characteristic of shoshonitic volcanic rocks. Their εNd(t) (+2.11 to +3.77) and εHf(t) (+5.90 to +11.73) values are positive. These characteristics indicate that the Middle Devonian volcanic rocks primarily originated from depleted mantle magmas metasomatized by subduction fluids, with the addition of crustal materials or subducted sediments during their formation. Based on regional geological data, it is believed that the study area underwent the following evolutionary stages during the Silurian–Devonian period: (1) active continental margin stage of southward subduction of the Paleo–Asian Ocean (PAO) (443–419 Ma); (2) arc-continent collision stage (419–405 Ma); (3) post-collision extension stage (404–375 Ma); (4) active continental margin stage, with the PAO plate subducting southward once again (375–360 Ma). The Tongbai complex plays an important role in the understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Tongbai‐Dabie orogenic belt. By detailed structural analysis, new zircon U–Pb dating, zircon Lu–Hf analysis and whole‐rock elements for the rocks in the Tongbai complex and the wrapped shear zones, we suggested that the Tongbai complex was derived from the partial melting of the basement of Yangtze Block and experienced a uniform orogen‐parallel extension with a top‐to‐NW shearing at 142–133 Ma. The migmatites yield a migmatization age of 116 ± 2 Ma and are identical to the metamorphic age of 115–111 Ma from the L and LS tectonites in the Tongbai complex. The late Early Cretaceous migmatization may give rise to the severance of the uniform top‐to‐NW shear zone and lead to an antiform folding of the Tongbai complex. The similar deformation and migmatization of the complexes in both the Tongbai and Dabie orogenic belts suggest that the Tongbai‐Dabie orogenic belt is likely to have a similar tectonic transformation from orogen‐parallel to orogen‐perpendicular extension in the Early Cretaceous, namely a uniform orogen‐parallel extension of the ductile lithosphere during the early Early Cretaceous and a widespread migmatization during the late Early Cretaceous. The Slate Islands (Ontario) is one of Canada's larger impact structures at 32 km in diameter and has been linked to the Ordovician meteorite event (OME). We report zircon U–Pb dates from two suevite and two syenite samples collected from the Slate Islands. Plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar dates were also obtained from one of the samples. The plagioclase and most zircon dates record pre‐impact ages with links to known tectonic events, including those associated with the assembly of the Superior Craton at approximately 2700 Ma. However, Neoarchean zircon grains appear to be reset at 456.1 ± 6.9 Ma (±2σ) based on the lower intercept of discordia for all dated samples. Garnet granulite xenoliths from the Nurbinskaya diatreme in the central part of the Archean Anabar province in Siberia are fragments of the local lower crust that experienced multiple metamorphic events in the Paleoproterozoic and reheating events in the Mesoproterozoic and later. This study addresses the timing of metamorphic transformations, and constrains the cooling rate and the time of stabilization of the lower crust. The observed metamorphic mineral assemblage of garnet, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, amphibole, rutile and ilmenite was formed at ~ 800 °C, 1.1–1.2 GPa under water-undersaturated conditions at ~ 1.88 Ga. However, the mineral assemblage is not well equilibrated and retains evidence of earlier and subsequent metamorphic stages. Late titanite formed in response to hydrous fluid influx according to phase equilibria modeling. U-Pb dating shows two events of titanite formation at 1850 ± 5 Ma and at 1788 ± 2 Ma. After deformation, which led to the porphyroclastic rock textures, the granulites underwent near-isobaric cooling. The cooling rate was higher than ~ 6 °C/Myr, to retain the garnet compositional zoning. Rutile ages are discordant, with 207Pb/206Pb dates ranging from 1.43 to 1.53 Ga. However, rutile may have responded to earlier thermal pulses, and was also reset later, so it does not record the stabilization of the crust. Eruptive dynamics is influenced by gas escape from the ascending magma. Gas pathways form in the magma via bubble coalescence, leading to gas channeling. Magmatic crystals play a key role in gas channel formation. This work constrains experimentally decompression‐induced coalescence in high‐crystallinity silicic magmas without external deformation, focusing on low gas content and bimodal crystal size (microlites and phenocrysts). All percolating samples have permeabilities of 10−14 m2 at bulk porosities of 7–10 vol% and bulk crystallinities up to 75 vol%. Our results demonstrate the possibility of coalescence‐related outgassing at high pressure (120–350 MPa) and without external strain, which corresponds to magma stagnating deep in a volcanic conduit. Channeling at such low gas content implies that bimodal crystallinity favors effusive over explosive volcanic behavior. It may also be the missing physical mechanism explaining gas transfer across magmatic systems despite high melt viscosity and low or absent magma extrusion. Plain Language Summary: The way volcanoes erupt is mainly controlled by the ability of gases to escape from the magma (outgassing). An efficient way to outgas is to connect bubbles together (coalescence) up to the point where channels form in the magma (channeling) in which gas can circulate toward the surface. We investigate experimentally how coalescence and channeling happen in immobile, crystal‐rich viscous magma in conditions (pressure and temperature) similar to those found in deep volcanic conduit, where only a small amount of gas (<10%) is present. Our experiments demonstrate that bubble connections are possible thanks to a large amount of crystals on which bubbles can lean, deform, and join each other. That gas can escape from magma at depth could favor effusive eruption over volcanic explosions and even bring new insights on degassing in immobile magma. When the lightweight quartz fiber-reinforced phenolic (LQFRP) composite is subjected to the combined effect of a local structural heat source and high-speed airflow, its ablation behavior exhibits significant localized characteristics and strong coupled effect. In this study, we have developed a bidirectional loosely coupled numerical model that integrates thermal, fluid, solid and ablation phenomena to solve the ablation-through problem of the LQFRP composite. The model takes into account the mechanisms of pyrolysis, oxidation, sublimation, and thermal mechanical erosion that occur during the ablation process of the LQFRP composite. The results suggest that the local structural heat source plays a crucial role in the erosion and retreat of the LQFRP composite. The morphology of the ablation pit shows a noticeable asymmetry, which is attributed to the aerodynamic heat and force. As a result of the local structural heat source, the fluid temperature downstream of the ablation pit is higher compared to that upstream of the ablation pit. The fluid that flows downstream of the ablation pit undergoes significant compression, leading to the formation of an oblique shock wave. The distribution of resin pyrolysis degree within the LQFRP composite is influenced by internal heat conduction. Fozi Mountain National Geopark is located in Zhenghe County in the northern region of Fujian Province, where the volcanic rocks of the Zhaixia Formation of the Shimaoshan Group are exposed. Zircon U-Pb dating and geochemical analysis were carried out to constrain its age and tectonic environment. The results show that three zircon U-Pb dating samples have attained ages of 99.2 ± 1.0 Ma, 99.6 ± 0.8 Ma, and 99.7 ± 2.0 Ma. Volcanic rocks in the core scenic area of Fozi Mountain were formed during the Late Cretaceous period. Elemental analysis showed that these volcanic rocks were dominated by the shoshonite series. They include gray dacite porphyry, grayish-white breccia tuff, volcanic agglomerate, and gray tuffaceous sandstone. These rocks were characterized by high silicon, high alkali content, and rich potassium levels. Lu-Hf isotope analysis of zircons revealed that their εHf(t) values varied from −8.7 to −6.8. The corresponding TDM2 values were primarily distributed in the range of 1.71 Ga to 1.59 Ga. These findings indicated that the magma primarily originated from the partial melting of the Mesoproterozoic crystalline basement, accompanied by a small number of mantle-derived materials. Tectonic environment analysis indicated that these rocks were formed in the post-orogenic intraplate extensional environment, which was associated with the back-arc extension or lithospheric thinning caused by the subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate beneath the Eurasian plate. The Dabie–Sulu Orogen hosts the largest province of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks in the world. The post-collisional extension eroded and transported volumes of rocks from the Dabie Orogen to adjacent basins, causing a lack of information about the orogen and thus obstructing our understanding of the exhumation process of UHP rocks. In addition, the mechanisms that triggered the post-collisional extension and affected the petrological-tectonic units of the orogen are still unclear. This study is focused on the time in which the present tectonic framework in the Dabie Orogen took place, selecting Early Cretaceous plutons in the eastern part of the orogen and carrying out detailed zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating and crystallization depth calculation. The zircon dating results show that the emplacement time of the Meichuan and Luannitan plutons and the Penghe superunit of the Zhubuyuan pluton are all ~128 Ma, while the Huangbai superunit of the Zhubuyuan pluton and the Longmianzhai pluton formed at ~125 Ma. The emplacement time and later anatexis of the Baimajian pluton occurred at ~128 and ~122 Ma, respectively. The results of the Al-in-hornblende geobarometer show that plutons of ~128 Ma have a similar crystallization depth, while plutons of ~125 Ma range from 7.6 to 9.5 km. The Baimajian pluton has a greater crystallization depth. Combined with the existing achievements, a conclusion can be drawn that the present tectonic framework of the Dabie Orogen began to form from ~128 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB), northwestern China, recording long-term and multiple accretionary and collisional events of the Tethyan Ocean, belongs to a high-pressure to ultra-high-pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic belt that underwent complex metamorphic overprinting in the early Paleozoic. In this contribution, we carry out an integrated study, including field investigations, petrographic observations, whole-rock analyses, zircon U-Pb dating, and P-T condition modeling using THERMOCALC in the NCKFMASHTO system for the eclogites, especially for the newly discovered UHP eclogite in the eastern part of EKOB. The eclogites exhibit geochemistry ranging from normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) to enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB). Zircons from the eclogites yield metamorphic ages of 416–413 Ma, indicating the eclogite facies metamorphism. Coesite inclusions in garnet and omphacite and quartz exsolution in omphacite and pseudosection calculation suggest that some eclogites experienced UHP eclogite facies metamorphism. The eclogites from the eastern part of EKOB record peak conditions of 29–33 kbar/705–760 °C, first retrograde conditions of 10 kbar at 9.5–12.5 kbar/610–680 °C, and second retrograde conditions at ~6 kbar/<600 °C. New evidence of the early Paleozoic UHP metamorphism in East Kunlun is identified in our study. Thus, we suggest that these eclogites were produced by the oceanic crust subducting to the depth of 100 km and exhumation. The presence of East Gouli and Gazhima eclogites in this study and other eclogites (430–414 Ma) in East Kunlun record the final closure of the local branch ocean of the Proto-Tethys and the evolution from subduction to collision. Freixo de Numão (FNG) and Capinha (CG) granites are prominent intrusions in the Douro Group (northern Central Iberian Zone, CIZ) and Beiras Supergroup (southern CIZ) metasediments, respectively. U-Pb dating revealed crystallization ages of 306 ± 2 Ma for FNG and 301 ± 3 Ma for CG, whereas Lu–Hf systematics has shown ɛHft values ranging from −4.5 to +0.6 and from −5.5 to +0.3 in FNG and CG autocrysts, respectively, suggesting that they originate from heterogeneous crustal anatectic melts, but a direct mantle-derived material contribution can also be considered. The isotopic data of inherited zircon cores of both granites, with ɛHft values ranging from −16.8 to +8.4 in FNG, and from −19.4 to +10.1 in CG, are compatible with a derivation from heterogeneous Neoproterozoic metasedimentary sources, consisting of juvenile and recycled crustal materials, comparable to those of the wall rocks. However, the less evolved initial 176Hf/177Hf signature of magmatic zircons of both granites requires more immature metasediments/juvenile materials as main sources for the parental magmas. In fact, for FNG, the high Sr and Ba whole-rock content, and the upper Cambrian inheritance highlight the involvement of a metaigneous protolith in its genesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Central Altun orogenic system is a result of the amalgamation of multiple micro-continental blocks and island arcs. This complex system originated from subduction–accretion–collision processes in the Proto-Tethys Ocean during the Early Paleozoic. Research has reported the discovery of several Li-Be granitic pegmatite deposits in the Central Altun Block, including the North Tugeman granitic pegmatite Li-Be deposit, Tugeman granitic pegmatite Be deposit, Tashisayi granitic pegmatite Li deposit, South Washixia granitic pegmatite Li deposit, and Tamuqie granitic pegmatite Li deposit. The Tashidaban granitic pegmatite Li deposit has been newly discovered along the northern margin of the Central Altun Block. Field and geochemical studies of the Tashidaban granitic pegmatite Li deposit indicate: (1) Spodumene pegmatites and elbaite pegmatites, as Li-bearing granitic pegmatites that form the Tashidaban granitic pegmatite Li deposit, intrude into the two-mica schist, and marble of the Muzisayi Formation of the Tashidaban Group. (2) Columbite–tantalite group minerals and zircon U-Pb dating results indicate that the mineralization age of Tashidaban Li granitic pegmatites is 450.2 ± 2.4 Ma with a superimposed magmatic event at around 418–422 Ma later. (3) Whole-rock geochemical results indicate that the Kumudaban rock sequence belongs to the S-type high-K to calc-alkaline granites and the Tashidaban Li granitic pegmatites originated from the extreme differentiation by fractional crystallization of the Kumdaban granite pluton. The Devonian tectonic setting is still controversial in the Proto‒Tethyan North Qilian belt. The Hexi Corridor of the North Qilian belt occupies a key position in constraining the tectonic evolution of the Proto‒Tethyan Ocean and the growth of the Asian continent. Turbidites, as an important component of the Jiayuguan mélange in the Hexi Corridor, consist of conglomerate, pebbly sandstone, sandstone, siltstone, calcareous mudstone, and chert that feature typical Bouma sequences of Ba, Bc, Bcd, Babc and/or Bab. They are strongly deformed into NW‒trending folds with NE‒ and SW‒inclined thrust faults. Detrital zircon U‒Pb dating results demonstrate that these sediments successively young to the southwest with maximum depositional ages (MDA) ranging from 560 Ma to 411 Ma, indicating that the youngest block was deposited after 411 Ma. Petrological, geochemical and detrital zircon U‒Pb age data indicate the sedimentary rocks provenanced from weak weathering, recycling, and multiple mixing sources, and that the dominant source was the Andean‒type Alxa arc. Together with the published data, we suggest that double‒sided subduction of the North Qilian Ocean (Proto‒Tethyan Ocean) occurred between the North Qilian arc and the Andean‒type Alxa arc during the early Devonian. [Objective] The Prydz Bay belt in East Antarctica recorded two significant tectono-thermal events, the Grenvillian event and the Pan-African event, which are considered to be closely related to the evolution of the Rodinia and Gondwana supercontinents. However, the geological history and the tectonic nature of the two events remain controversial. [Methods] Mineralogical and petrological analyses, phase equilibria modelling and zircon geochronology are combined to investigate the spinel-cordierite granulite from the Mirror Peninsula in order to better understand the tectono-thermal history of the Prydz Bay belt. [Results] The spinel-cordierite granulite contains different stages of mineral assemblages. The major stage of mineral assemblage involves cordierite, spinel, biotite, sillimanite, K-feldspar and minor garnet and ilmenite. The later stage of mineral assemblage is indicated by the emergence of magnetite as the increasing volumes of biotite and cordierite. Minor garnet and corundum are locally preserved, implying the mineral reaction 'g+cor→sp+sill' and more garnet and corundum in the peak stage. The garnet grains consist of 70%-72% almandine, 20%-22% pyrope, -4% grossularite and -4% spessartine. The XFe (Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg2+)) of representative garnet grains ranges from 0.77 to 0.80. The spinel exhibits an XFe range from 0.80 to 0.86. Different cordierite grains have similar compositions with Al of 3.89-3.93 a.p.f.u (atoms per formula unit) and XFe of 0.32-0.36. Biotite has high TiO2 (4.13%-5.23%) and Ti (0.23-0.30 a.p.f.u). K-feldspar grains consist of 78%-85% orthoclase, 15%-23% albite and -1% anorthite. Based on the mineral compositions and phase equilibrium modelling, the pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions of the major stage of mineral assemblage are constrained to 870-910 °C and 0.64-0.69 GPa, followed by later retrogression to 810-820°C and 0.49-0.53 GPa. A peak stage with higher P-T conditions (T>910 °C, P>0.69 GPa) can be inferred based on the relict peak minerals and characteristic mineral compositions (e.g. Ti in biotite). Zircon grains commonly show core-mantle-rim structures in cathodoluminescence (CL) images. The LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating analyses reveal a wide age range from 613±7 Ma to 877±9 Ma (except a maximum of 916±11 Ma) for the cores. The zircon bright rims yield a weighted mean age of 526±8 Ma with a wide range of Th/U (0.06-1.23), mostly higher than 0.1. [Conclusion] Based on the results, a few conclusions can be drawn: (1) The spinel-cordierite granulite recorded medium-low pressure/high-ultrahigh temperature metamorphism with a clockwise P-T evolution path and high dT/dP. (2) The results of zircon geochronological analysis show that zircon cores mainly record U-Pb ages in the range of 800--600 Ma, younger than typical ages of Grenvillian events, which may reflect younger inherited zircon cores or significant isotopic resetting. (3) The age of -530 Ma of zircon rims is interpreted to represent the post-peak cooling stage of the Pan-African tectono-thermal event. [Significance] This study examined the P-T conditions and the zircon ages of the spinel-cordierite granulite in the Mirror Peninsula. In deep layers, the complex geological environment is characterized by high temperature and high stress which causes marked differences in the mechanical properties of granite compared to those of granite in shallow areas. To investigate the mechanical properties of deep granite, this paper utilizes conventional triaxial compression tests to determine the various mechanical properties and failure modes of deep granite under different confining pressures. The findings indicate that the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and peak strength of deep granite display greater dispersion than those of shallow granite under the influence of confining pressure. Based on the stress-strain curve, various characteristic stresses of deep granite under different confining pressures are calculated, and a distinct exponential function relationship exists between the characteristic stresses and the confining pressure. Furthermore, the finite element numerical simulation software Abaqus is employed to simulate the conventional triaxial compression of granite under different confining pressures, thereby revealing the stress and deformation evolution process of granite during the compression process. This research unveils the mechanical properties of deep granite under gradient-confining pressure, which can offer crucial theoretical evidence and data to support engineering applications in relevant fields. Epidote group minerals, including allanite, clinozoisite and epidote are common in a range of metamorphic, igneous and hydrothermal systems, and are stable across a wide range of pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions. These minerals can incorporate substantial amounts of rare earth elements (REEs) during their crystallisation, making them potential candidates for Lu–Hf geochronology to provide age constraints on various geological processes. Here we report on a first exploration into the feasibility of in situ Lu–Hf geochronology for epidote group minerals from various geological settings and compare the results with age constraints from other geochronometers. Magmatic allanite samples from pegmatites and monzogranites in the Greenland anorthosite complex, Coompana Province and Qingling Orogen provided dates consistent with magmatic events spanning from c. 2660 to 1171 Ma. In the Qingling pegmatites, a younger phase of hydrothermal allanite was dated at c. 215 Ma, consistent with the timing of regional REE mineralisation. Allanite from the Yambah Shear Zone, Strangways Metamorphic Complex, yielded Lu–Hf age of c. 430 Ma. It predates the garnet and apatite growth at c. 380 Ma, suggesting the Lu–Hf system can be preserved in allanite during prograde amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Additionally, Lu–Hf dates for hydrothermal clinozoisite and epidote are consistent with the timing of hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation in a range of settings, demonstrating the utility of the technique for mineral exploration. Despite the current lack of matrix-matched reference materials, the successful application of laser ablation Lu–Hf geochronology to epidote group minerals offers valuable geochronological insights into various geological processes that can be difficult to access through other geochronometers. Explosive silicic eruptions pose a significant threat to society, yet the development and destabilization of the underlying silicic magmatic systems are still controversial. Zircons provide simultaneous information on the trace element composition and age of silicic magmatic systems, while melt inclusions in quartz and plagioclase yield important constraints on their volatile content as well as magma storage depth. Melt inclusions in zircons (MIZs) combine these data from a single mineral grain, recording the age, storage depth, temperature, and composition of magmas, and thus provide unique constraints on the structure and evolution of silicic magmatic systems. We studied MIZs from the Laguna del Maule (LdM) volcanic field in the southern Andes that is among the most active Pleistocene-Holocene rhyolitic volcanic centers worldwide and a potentially hazardous system displaying inflation rates in excess of 25 cm/yr. The host zircon ages suggest that the LdM MIZ record extends to ~ 30 kyr before eruption, in contrast to the melt inclusions in LdM plagioclase and quartz crystals that formed only decades to centuries before eruption. The major element compositions of MIZs are minimally affected by post-entrapment crystallization, and agree well with the LdM rhyolitic whole rock data. The MIZs record long-term differences in zircon-saturated melt composition between two eruptive units (rdm: Rhyolite of the Laguna del Maule vs. rle: Rhyolite of Los Espejos). The more evolved major element composition of rle MIZs than rdm MIZs, suggests a long-term deeper connection of the rdm crystal mush to a more primitive magma body than that of the rle. The evidence of slow H diffusion observed in MIZs suggest that their H2O contents are not significantly affected by diffusion of H through the host zircon. The magma storage pressures of 1.1 to 2.8 kbars recorded by the H2O contents of rdm and rle MIZs are consistent with the optimal emplacement window (2.0 ± 0.5 kbar) of silicic magma reservoir growth, storage, and eruptibility based on thermomechanical modeling (Huber et al. 2019). We use U–Pb dating of allanite and REE-rich epidote in three polymetamorphosed units from the Eastern Alps to constrain the timing of prograde metamorphism. All three units (Ennstal, Wölz and Rappold Complex) record several metamorphic cycles (Variscan, Permian and Eoalpine) and presently define an Eoalpine (Cretaceous) metamorphic field gradient from lower greenschist to amphibolite facies. For U–Pb data, a method is introduced to test the magnitude of 230Th disequilibrium and potentially approximate the Th/U ratio of the reservoir out of which allanite and REE-rich epidote grew. We also show that the modelled stability of epidote-group minerals in the REE-free MnNCKFMASH and MnNCKFMASHTO systems and REE-bearing systems is nearly identical. By combining the stability fields of (clino-)zoisite and epidote modelled in REE-free systems with known geothermal gradients for the region, REE-rich epidote growth is constrained to 200–450 °C and 0.2–0.8 GPa during prograde metamorphism. In the Rappold Complex, allanite cores yield a Variscan age of ca. 327 Ma. In the Ennstal and Wölz Complex, allanite growth during the Permian event occurred at ca. 279–286 Ma. Importantly, recrystallized allanite laths and REE-rich epidote overgrowths in samples from all three units yield prograde Eoalpine ages of ca. 100 Ma, even though these units subsequently reached different peak conditions, most likely at different times. This suggests that all units were buried roughly at the same time during the onset of Eoalpine continental subduction. This interpretation leaves room for the model proposing that diachronous peak metamorphic conditions reported for the field gradient may be related to the inertia of thermal equilibration rather than tectonic processes. The continental crust is produced by the solidification of aluminosilicate‐rich magmas which are sourced from deep below the surface. Migration of the magma depends on the density (ρ) contrast to source rocks and the melt viscosity (η). At the surface, these silica‐rich melts are typically sluggish due to high η > 1,000 Pa s. Yet at their source regions, the melt properties are complexly influenced by pressure (P), temperature (T), and water contents (XH2O ${X}_{{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}}$). In this study, we examined the combined P‐T‐XH2O ${X}_{{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}}$ effects on the behavior of melts with an albite stoichiometry (NaAlSi3O8). We used first‐principles molecular dynamics simulations to examine anhydrous (0 wt % H2O) and hydrous (5 wt % H2O) melts. To constrain the P and T effects, we explored P ≤ 25 GPa across several isotherms between 2500 and 4000 K. The melts show anomalous P‐ρ relationships at low P ∼ 0 GPa and high T ≥ 2500 K, consistent with vaporization. At lithospheric conditions, melt ρ increases with compression and is well described by a finite‐strain formalism. Water lowers the melt density (ρhydrous < ρanhydrous) but increases the compressibility, that is, 1/Khydrous >1/Kanhydrous or Khydrous < Kanhydrous. We also find that the melt η decreases with pressure and then increases with further compression. Water decreases the viscosity (ηhydrous < ηanhydrous) by depolymerizing the melt structure. The ionic self‐diffusivities are increased by the presence of water. The decreased ρ and η by H2O increase the mobility of magma at crustal conditions, which could explain the rapid eruption and migration timescales for rhyolitic magmas as observed in the Chaitén volcano in Chile. It is expected that the magmas will become more viscous due to increasing pressure at the deep crustal depths near their sources. However, observations contrast the expectations. Some volcanic eruptions indicate rapid movement of the aluminosilicate‐rich magmas before the eruption. The movement of magma is influenced by its density and viscosity. These properties are influenced by pressure, temperature, and the water contents of the magma. To better understand how these parameters affect magmas in the crust, we performed computer simulations on molten albite with and without water. The albite chemistry mimics the chemistry of aluminosilicate‐rich magmas in the crust. At conditions of the deep crust where magmas originate, the densities of the magmas increase with compression. The magma viscosities also decrease under the same pressure. Our results provide, in part, a plausible explanation for a surprisingly rapid eruption of the Chaitén volcano in Chile. Water lowers both the magma density and viscosity which helps to explain the rapid eruption of the hydrous aluminosilicate‐rich lavas. FeO is an important component in both mantle silicates and core iron alloys. Understanding its melting behavior and physical properties is crucial for exploring the chemistry and physics of our planet. Here we report the melting curve of FeO up to 186 GPa from laser‐heating experiments in a diamond‐anvil cell coupled with synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. In‐situ observations of both temperature plateau and changes in XRD patterns were used as primary melting criteria. The ex‐situ examination of a recovered sample shows consistent melting temperatures of FeO with in‐situ determinations. Our melting curve of FeO agrees with existing low‐pressure data within uncertainties and is much lower than earlier experimental results above 100 GPa including those extrapolated by Lindemann's law. Our results indicate that FeO‐rich materials could be present as melts coexisting with surrounding solids in the lowermost mantle, providing plausible explanations to the seismically observed ultra‐low velocity zones. The MgO‐FeO‐SiO2 melting phase diagram shows that fractional crystallization of mantle silicate melts would end up with a cotectic ternary minimum containing up to 95 mol% FeO, which would have a similar or slightly lower melting temperature than FeO. Considering the temperature at present‐day CMB, we anticipate that FeO‐rich materials, possible products of late‐stage magma ocean crystallization, would still exist as melts with surrounding solids at the bottom of the mantle. Due to its liquid nature and high density, the existence of FeO‐rich melts above the CMB could provide important insights for explaining the seismologically observed ultra‐low velocity zones. Recently, a large-scale gas reservoir was discovered in granitic buried hills of the Songnan Low Uplift in the Qiongdongnan Basin. However, the strong heterogeneity of granite reservoirs limits further exploration and evaluation. Based on observations of sixty core samples and sixty thin sections, mineral composition, zircon dating, apatite fission tracks, physical properties, image logs, outcrop surveys and seismic interpretations, the characteristics of granite weathering crust of the Songnan Low Uplift are analyzed, and its controlling factors and evolution process are evaluated. The results show that weathered granite in the study area can be divided into several zones, from top to bottom: eluvium–slope zone, sandy zone, weathered fracture zone and horizontal undercurrent vuggy zone. The reservoirs in the eluvium–slope zone are dominated by microfissures and intergranular dissolution pores and have an average porosity of 4.68% and permeability of 2.34 md; the reservoirs in the sandy zone are composed of intergranular and intragranular dissolution pores and have an average porosity of 11.46% and permeability of 4.99 md; the reservoirs in the weathered fracture zone consist of various fractures and have an average porosity of 3.91% and permeability of 2.5 md; the reservoirs in the horizontal undercurrent vuggy zone are subhorizontal fractures and vugs and have an average porosity of 2.7% and permeability of 0.23 md. The development of granite reservoirs is jointly influenced by petrology and minerals, long-term exposure in a warm humid paleoclimate, faults, diverse topographies and shallow buried depth. Based on the above, our study establishes a development model of weathering crust and suggests that only the gentle slope and platform remain strongly weathered zones. After undergoing a complex evolution process of formation–destruction/denudation–regeneration–preservation, the current weathering crust of the Songnan Low Uplift is finally established. The results of this study have important theoretical and application value for the hydrocarbon exploration of buried hills in the Qiongdongnan Basin and provide a reference example for other granite reservoirs worldwide. The Kangjiawan Pb-Zn deposit, situated within the Shuikoushan polymetallic ore field in Changning, Hunan Province, China, is a large-scale Pb-Zn deposit unearthed in 1976. Based on detailed geological field investigations, this study presents the results of the Rb-Sr isotopic dating, electron probe microanalyses (EPMAs), and LA-ICP-MS analyses of the Kangjiawan Pb-Zn deposit in order to determine the ore-forming age and the occurrence of trace elements in sphalerite and thereby constrain the genesis of the deposit. The Rb-Sr dating of quartz-hosted fluid inclusions yielded an Rb-Sr isochron age of 150 ± 4 Ma, with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.71101 ± 0.00008 (MSWD = 1.1), suggesting that the Pb-Zn mineralization of the Kangjiawan deposit took place during the Late Jurassic, coeval with the magmatic activities within the ore field. EPMA and LA-ICP-MS analyses showed that Fe, Mn, and Cd were primarily incorporated into the sphalerite lattice through isomorphous substitution. Specifically, Fe and Mn substituted for Zn, whereas Cd replaced both Fe and Zn. Other elements such as Cu, Sb, and Sn occurred within the sphalerite lattice through mineral micro-inclusions or isomorphic substitution. EPMAs and LA-ICP-MS results showed that the FeS contents in sphalerite were less than 14.33%, with corresponding ore-forming temperatures below 259 °C. The LA-ICP-MS results showed that sphalerites from the Kangjiawan Pb-Zn deposit had relatively high Ga/In ratios ranging from 0.01 to 144, providing further support for medium-to-low-temperature mineralization. The trace element compositions of sphalerites from the Kangjiawan Pb-Zn deposit exhibit skarn-type characteristics, suggesting a potential association with contemporary magmatic activities within the Shuikoushan ore field. During the Late Jurassic, extensive granitic magmatic activities occurred in the study area. At the late stage of magma crystallization, hydrothermal fluid containing Pb and Zn precipitated at medium-to-low temperatures and generated the Kangjiawan Pb-Zn deposit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Madagascar is globally recognized as an important producer of high-quality flaky graphite. However, current research on graphite deposits in Madagascar remains insufficient. Previous studies have linked the genesis of Madagascan graphite deposits to the metamorphism of sedimentary organic matter. Here, we provide a case study of graphite deposits in Madagascar, combining new data from the Ambahita graphite deposit (AMG) in southern Madagascar with data from the Antanisoa graphite deposit (ANG) in central Madagascar and the Vohitasara graphite deposit (VOG) on the east coast of Madagascar. We note that the mineral assemblages of graphite-bearing rocks in the AMG, ANG, and VOG are not typical of metamorphic mineral assemblages but rather the results of filling and metasomatism by mantle-derived fluids that occurred after peak metamorphism. Electron microprobe analysis indicates that the graphite of the AMG, VOG, and ANG is usually associated with phlogopite or Mg-biotite; the phlogopite shares a common genesis with other widespread phlogopite deposits across Madagascar. We reveal that the distribution of graphite deposits in Madagascar is primarily controlled by ductile shear zones between blocks. Ductile shear zones that extend deep into the mantle can provide an ideal migration channel and architecture for the emplacement of mantle-derived fluids. The graphite mineralization formed no earlier than the peak metamorphism (490 Ma) and no later than the intrusion of pegmatite veins (389 ± 5 Ma). The distribution of graphite deposits, graphite orebody morphologies, mineral associations, and geochemical data suggest that the genesis of graphite deposits in Madagascar is linked to mantle-derived fluid filling rather than the metamorphism of sediments, as previously suggested. The late Paleozoic tectonic setting of the Zongwulong Belt (ZWLB), a significant unit located in the northern Qaidam margin, Qinghai province, remains uncertain. Diabase dykes in the western part of the Zongwulong Belt offer insights into this issue. Field investigations reveal that the dips of the dykes are almost vertical, and they have sharp boundaries with the host rocks. These dykes consist of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and opaque minerals exhibiting a characteristic porphyritic texture and massive structure. Zircon U-Pb dating of the dykes yields a weighted 206Pb/238U age of 289 ± 1 Ma. The dykes exhibit relatively high concentrations of TFeO, K2O + Na2O, and TiO2, while the SiO2 and MgO concentrations are relatively low. They display relative light-over-heavy REE enrichment, and lack negative Nb-Ta and Eu anomalies. The dykes underwent negligible crustal contamination, and experienced extensive fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides. Originating from the spinel–garnet transition zone at depths of approximately 75 km, the dykes result from garnet facies low-degree melting (5%–10%) in a continental rift setting. Combining these findings with regional geological data, we propose that the ZWLB likely experienced a continental rift in the west and exhibited a narrow oceanic environment in the east in the late Paleozoic period, potentially representing the most distant north branch of the East Paleo-Tethys Ocean. This paper presents the integration of magnetic susceptibility measurements and whole-rock geochemical compositional and Nd–Sr isotopic ratio analyses for granite samples collected from the Ranong, Lam Pi, Ban Lam Ru, and Phuket granite bodies in the Western Granitoid Belt of Thailand. In addition, U–Pb dating was performed on zircons extracted from the samples. All samples are proper granites based on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics. Two samples collected from the Lam Pi granite body were classified as magnetite-series and I-type. The remaining granite samples were classified as ilmenite-series and S- or A-type. Furthermore, all granites were classified as syn-collision granites. Excluding the magnetite-series samples from the Lam Pi granite body, the other samples exhibit enrichment in incompatible elements, such as Nb, Sn, Ta, Pb, Bi, Th, U, Ce, Rb, and Cs. Zircon U–Pb dating yielded ages of ca. 60 Ma for the magnetite-series granites from the Lam Pi granite body, whereas ages of 88–84 Ma were obtained for the other granite bodies. Initial Nd–Sr isotopic ratios indicate a higher contribution of mantle material in the Lam Pi magnetite-series granites and a higher contribution of continental crust material in the other granites. Based on these compositional and zircon U–Pb age data, it is inferred that the 88–84 Ma granites formed as a result of the thickening of the continental crust owing to the collision between the Sibumasu and the West Burma blocks. In contrast, the ca. 60 Ma Lam Pi magnetite-series granites are thought to have been generated via partial melting of the mantle wedge associated with the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic crust beneath the West Burma Block. The Multiple-Diffusion Domain (MDD) model empirically describes the diffusive behavior of noble gases in some terrestrial materials and has been commonly used to interpret 40Ar/39Ar stepwise degassing observations in K-feldspar. When applied in this manner, the MDD model can be used to test crustal exhumation scenarios by identifying the permissible thermal paths a rock sample could have undergone over geological time, assuming the diffusive properties of Ar within the mineral are accurately understood. More generally, the MDD model provides a framework for quantifying the temperature-dependent diffusivity of noble gasses in minerals. However, constraining MDD parameters that successfully predict the results of step-heating diffusion experiments is a complex task and the assumptions made by existing numerical methods used to quantify model parameters can bias the absolute temperatures permitted by thermal modeling. For example, the most commonly used method (Lovera et al., 1997) assumes that no domains lose more than 60 % of their gas during early heating steps. This assumption is unverifiable, and we show that Lovera et al.'s (1997) procedure may bias predicted temperatures towards lower values when it is violated. To address this potential bias and to provide greater accessibility to the MDD model, we present a new, open-source method for constraining MDD parameters from stepwise degassing experimental results, called the "MDD Tool Kit." This software optimizes all MDD parameters simultaneously and removes any need for user-defined Ea or regression-fitting choices used by other tools. In doing so, this new method eliminates assumptions about the domain size distribution. To test the validity of our thermal predictions, we then use the MDD Tool Kit to interpret the 40Ar/39Ar results of Wong et al. (2023) from the Grayback Fault, AZ, USA. Although the resulting thermal histories are consistently ~ 60–75 °C higher than those found by Wong et al. 2023), they agree with independent observations from apatite fission track, zircon fission track, and (U-Th)/He (Howard and Foster, 1996). Shallow-water carbonate rocks constitute a crucial component of large guyots, arising in distinct environments and harboring valuable insights into the evolutionary stages of seamount islands as well as the tectonic conditions of the underlying oceanic plate. Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) was used to conduct in situ U–Pb isotope dating of carbonate minerals with low uranium content collected from Weijia Guyot. This dating approach yielded crucial evidence for the vertical development of the seamount. Our study indicates that shallow-water carbonate rocks in Weijia Guyot had a temporal range between 91 My and 137 My. The carbonate rocks underwent two growth phases, Hauterivian to Barremian and Cenomanian to Turonian, with a hiatus of approximately 20 My. Since the Hauterivian age, the shield volcano of Weijia Guyot is essentially complete, with its seamount top exposed at or near sea level and receiving its first stage of shallow-water carbonate sedimentation. Based on the dating of both shallow-water carbonate rocks and hawaiite within the Weijia Guyot, it is inferred that approximately 10 My elapsed from shield-building volcanism to late alkalic volcanism. During the Turonian age, the main reason for the second phase of shallow-water carbonate rocks in the seamounts was the regional tectonic uplift triggered by the drift of the Weijia Guyot along with the Pacific Plate toward the Society hotspot. Background: The use of rock powders in soil has emerged as a nature-based technology to improve soil properties relevant to crop development and for atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR) via enhanced rock weathering (ERW). Although modeling this process is crucial, the soil microbiome has been identified as the main reason why several experimental and field results do not fit the geochemical and kinetic theoretical models. Here, the hypothesis that the bacterial community structure is modulated by the application of different silicate rock powders was tested. One phonolite, three basalt variations and one granite, as well as KCl treatments, were applied to a Ferralsol cultivated with Brachiaria in short-term pedogeochemical experiments and assessed after 1 (1M), 4 (4M) and 8 (8M) months. Results: The main changes in soil bacterial structure were observed at 8M and found to be modulated according to rock type, with petrochemistry and mineralogy acting as the main drivers. The content of microbial biomass carbon tended to decrease over time in the Control and KCl treatments, especially at 4M, while the rock treatments showed constant behavior. The sampling time and treatment affected the richness and diversity indices. The Si, Ca and Fe from mafic minerals were the main chemical elements related to the soil bacterial changes at 8M. Conclusions: The type (acidity) of silicate rock powder modulated the soil bacterial community (SBC) in a pot experiment with tropical soil. The specificity of the SBC for each rock type increased with time until the end of the experiment at 8 months (8M). The carbon content in the microbial biomass was lower in the rock powder treatments in the first month (1 M) than in the control and KCl treatments and was equal to or higher than that in the 8 M treatment. The kinematics and deformation pattern along the Altyn Tagh fault (ATF), one of the largest strike‐slip faults on Earth is of great significance for understanding the growth of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the initial rupture along the ATF remains debated given the limited constraints on the depositional age of associated Cenozoic syntectonic strata. Here we investigated the syntectonic Cenozoic strata in the Xorkol Basin, associated with the strike‐slip faulting along the ATF. New uranium‐lead analyses of the carbonate deposits in the Paleogene strata yield dates of 58.9 ± 1.29 Ma, representing the initial rupture of the ATF. This first documented radioisotopic age coincides with the ca. 60 Ma onset timing of India‐Asia collision, highlighting its far‐field effect at the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. We infer that the deformation of the entire Tibetan Plateau started synchronously with the India‐Asia collision. Plain Language Summary: Carbonate U‐Pb dating techniques applied to rocks associated with the Altyn Tagh fault, a major fault in North Tibet, reveal that the fault started slipping about 58.9 million years ago, coinciding with the time when India collided with Asia. This finding provides new constraints on when and where this fault formed and suggests that the northern Tibetan Plateau started deformation earlier than previously thought. This result emphasizes that the entire Tibetan Plateau deformed simultaneously in the early Cenozoic. The chemical and pore structures of coal play a crucial role in determining the content of free gas in coal reservoirs. This study focuses on investigating the impact of acidification transformation on the micro-physical and chemical structure characteristics of coal samples collected from Wenjiaba No. 1 Mine in Guizhou. The research involves a semi-quantitative analysis of the chemical structure parameters and crystal structure of coal samples before and after acidification using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. Additionally, the evolution characteristics of the pore structure are characterized through high-pressure mercury injection (HP-MIP), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LT-N2A), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental findings reveal that the acid solution modifies the structural features of coal samples, weakening certain vibrational structures and altering the chemical composition. Specifically, the asymmetric vibration structure of aliphatic CH2, the asymmetric vibration of aliphatic CH3, and the symmetric vibration of CH2 are affected. This leads to a decrease in the contents of -OH and -NH functional groups while increasing aromatic structures. The crystal structure of coal samples primarily dissolves transversely after acidification, affecting intergranular spacing and average height. Acid treatment corrodes mineral particles within coal sample cracks, augmenting porosity, average pore diameter, and the ratio of macro-pores to transitional pores. Moreover, acidification increases fracture width and texture, enhancing the connectivity of the fracture structure in coal samples.
