Background: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in South Korea. Dyslipidemia is an independent risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. There is strong evidence that atherosclerosis begins early in life and that elevated lipid levels in childhood predict elevated lipid levels into adulthood. Current Concepts: A universal approach for cholesterol screening in all children is recommended. Lipid profiles should be studied for all children aged 9 to 11 years and then for those aged 17 to 21 years, as cholesterol levels may vary after puberty. The non-fasting lipid profile can be as useful in detecting severe genetic dyslipidemias as the fasting lipid profile and thus can be used as a first-line screening in children. The initial treatment for dyslipidemia in a child always begins with a 6-month trial of lifestyle modifications, such as improvements in dietary and physical activity patterns. Statins are as effective in children as in adults and can lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels by up to 50%. Therefore, they are considered first-line therapy for children who meet the criteria for pharmacological therapy. Discussion and Conclusion: Statins and non-statin lipid-lowering agents can lower cholesterol levels with minimal adverse effects in children and adolescents with hypercholesterolemia. However, limited data is currently available on the long-term safety and efficacy of lipid-lowering agents in the pediatric population. Furthermore, non-statin lipid-lowering agents are used far less frequently in children. Therefore, further long-term safety and efficacy studies on lipid-lowering agents in pediatric populations and clinical trials with non-statin lipid-lowering agents are required. Background/Aims There is growing interest in whether Helicobacter pylori eradication (HPE) can affect body weight. Methods Data from 5 universities between January 2013 and December 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. H. pylori -positive subjects who had body weight measurements taken at least twice at intervals of 3 months or longer were included. Using propensity score (PS)-matched data, changes in body mass index (BMI) and the lipid profile after HPE were compared with the non-HPE group. Results Among 363 eligible patients, 131 HPE patients were PS-matched to 131 non-HPE patients. The median intervals between the measurements were 610 (range, 154-1250) days and 606 (range, 154-1648) days in the HPE and non-HPE groups, respectively. In both groups, the mean BMI increased (from 24.5 kg/m² to 24.7 kg/m² in the HPE group, and from 24.4 kg/m² to 24.5 kg/m² in the non-HPE group). The 2 groups did not show significantly different changes (P = 0.921). In the lowest baseline BMI quartile, the BMI increased after HPE by 1.23 (standard deviation [SD], 3.72) kg/m² (P = 0.060), and the non-HPE group showed a decreased BMI at the time of follow-up (by -0.24 [SD, 5.25] kg/m²; P = 0.937) (between-group P = 0.214). Triglyceride levels increased after HPE (mean: 135 [SD, 78] to 153 [SD, 100] mg/dL; between-group P = 0.053). Conclusion The overall BMI change was not significantly different between the HPE and non-HPE groups, but patients with low BMI showed a tendency to gain weight after HPE. We investigated the spatio-temporal variations in three key biomolecular compounds (carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids) in particulate organic matter (POM) in the Yellow Sea (YS), South Sea of Korea (SS), East China Sea (ECS), and East Sea (Sea of Japan; ES) in order to estimate the regional annual calorie production rates based on the seasonal data obtained in each region. Carbohydrates were found to be most dominant, followed by lipids across all seas. The euphotic-integral calorie contents of POM during the study period were determined as 53.5 ± 12.6 Kcal m−2 in the YS; 54.2 ± 7.5 Kcal m−2 in the SS; 35.7 ± 9.2 Kcal m−2 in the ECS; and 58.7 ± 6.2 Kcal m−2 in the ES. Utilizing seasonal carbon conversion factors and primary production rates, we estimated the annual calorie productions, which were highest in the ES (1705 Kcal m−2 y−1) and lowest in the ECS (403 Kcal m−2 y−1). This can be attributed to the significantly higher energy efficiency of phytoplankton and faster turnover rate of calorie content. However, caution must be taken when comparing these estimates regionally, considering potential variations in developmental phases among the four regions during the sampling period in 2018. This nationwide population-based cohort study evaluated the association between lipid profiles and the future risk of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using authorized clinical data provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service. A total of 6,129,616 subjects over 50 years of age who participated in the Korean National Health Screening Program in 2013 or 2014 were included. Data on risk factors, including age, sex, comorbidities, behavioral factors, and baseline lipid profiles, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels were collected. Patients were followed-up patients until December 2018, and incident cases of exudative AMD were identified using registered diagnostic codes. During an average follow-up period of 4.91 years, 18,803 patients were newly diagnosed with exudative AMD. Compared to the lowest HDL cholesterol quartile group, the highest HDL cholesterol quartile group had a greater risk of future exudative AMD development with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.13 (1.08–1.18) in the fully adjusted model. The highest TG quartile group had a lower risk of exudative AMD than the lowest TG quartile group, with a hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.84 (0.81–0.88). Background: The role of lipid metabolism in obesity and cancer manifestations cannot be underestimated, but whether alterations in lipid metabolism can manipulate the vasculature to promote obesity among breast cancer (BC) survivors is yet to be clearly understood. This study quantified plasma lipid and particle sizes using high-throughput proton (1H) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and tested their associations with obesity among breast cancer (BC) survivors. Methods: A total of 348 (225 premenopausal and 123 postmenopausal) BC survivors enrolled from five hospitals in Korea were included. We assessed thirty-four plasma lipid biomarkers using 1H NMR, and obesity status was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or greater. Generalized linear and logistic regression models were applied to estimate the least-square means of BMI (kg/m2) and odds ratio (OR)s of obesity, respectively, and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI)s across plasma lipid levels. Results: Mean (SD) values of BMI was 23.3 (3.2) kg/m2 and 90 (25.9%) had BMI of ≥ 25 kg/m2. BMI levels increased with increasing total triglycerides (TG), TG in lipoproteins and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) subfractions. However, BMI levels decreased with increasing tertiles of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (C) and HDL particle size (HDL-p). Similar associations were observed in the logistic regression models. The increasing and decreasing BMI trends with TG and HDL profiles respectively were predominantly limited to premenopausal BC survivors. Conclusions: Increasing levels of plasma total TG and TG in lipoproteins were associated with increasing levels of BMI among premenopausal BC survivors. High HDL-C levels and large HDL-p were inversely associated with obesity among premenopausal BC survivors. Due to the cross-sectional design of this study, longitudinal studies are necessary to examine the association between obesity and lipid profile among BC survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the correlations among anti‐Müllerian hormone levels, body mass index and lipid profile in female nurses of reproductive age. Design: This is a descriptive cross‐sectional study that used data from the Korea Nurses' Health Study, based on Nurses' Health Study 3 in the United States. Methods: Participants included 448 female nurses of reproductive age. They provided details about their work experience, shift work, body mass index and history of polycystic ovary syndrome. Serum anti‐Müllerian hormone levels and lipid profile were measured using blood samples. Statistical analysis included quantile regression analysis using STATA 13.0. Data were collected between November 2016 and March 2017 from Module 5 of the Korean Nurses' Health Study. Results: Approximately 12% of the participants were underweight, and roughly one‐tenth were either overweight or obese. Although linear regression showed no relationship between anti‐Müllerian hormone levels and body mass index, quantile regression showed that body mass index, total cholesterol levels and low‐density lipoprotein levels were negatively correlated with anti‐Müllerian hormone levels at the lower tails of the dependent variable. Meanwhile, high‐density lipoprotein levels were positively correlated with anti‐Müllerian hormone at the higher percentiles of anti‐Müllerian hormone levels. Conclusion: These findings suggest the possibility that changes in the lipid profile may influence anti‐Müllerian hormone levels in women with diminished ovarian function, rather than obesity itself.
