In a paper from 2001 (Journal of the LMS), Diestel and Leader offered a proof that a connected graph has a normal spanning tree if and only if it does not contain a minor from two specific forbidden classes of graphs, all of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Unfortunately, their proof contains a gap, and their result is incorrect. In this paper, we construct a third type of obstruction: an $\aleph_1$-sized graph without a normal spanning tree that contains neither of the two types described by Diestel and Leader as a minor. In this paper we generalize an equation studied by Mossino and Temam, to the fully nonlinear case. This equation arises in plasma physics as an approximation to Grad equations, which were introduced by Harold Grad, to model the behavior of plasma confined in a toroidal vessel. We prove existence of a $W^{2,p}$-viscosity solution and regularity up to $C^{1,\alpha}(\overline{\Omega})$ for any $\alpha

When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to algebraic and combinatorial study. The theory of virtual resolutions includes a notion of a virtually Cohen--Macaulay property, though tools for assessing which modules are virtually Cohen--Macaulay have only recently started to be developed. In this paper, we continue this research program in two related ways. The first is that, when $X$ is a product of projective spaces, we produce a large new class of virtually Cohen--Macaulay Stanley--Reisner rings, which we show to be virtually Cohen--Macaulay via explicit constructions of appropriate virtual resolutions reflecting the underlying combinatorial structure. The second is that, for an arbitrary smooth projective toric variety $X$, we develop homological tools for assessing the virtual Cohen--Macaulay property. Some of these tools give exclusionary criteria, and others are constructive methods for producing suitably short virtual resolutions. In the present paper, we construct a cusped hyperbolic $4$-manifold with all cusp sections homeomorphic to the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold, which is a rational homology sphere. By a result of Gol\'enia and Moroianu, the Laplacian on $2$-forms on such a manifold has purely discrete spectrum. This shows that one of the main results of Mazzeo and Phillips from 1990 cannot hold without additional assumptions on the homology of the cusps. This also answers a question by Gol\'enia and Moroianu from 2012. The contact number of a packing of finitely many balls in Euclidean $d$-space is the number of touching pairs of balls in the packing. A prominent subfamily of sphere packings is formed by the so-called totally separable sphere packings: here, a packing of balls in Euclidean $d$-space is called totally separable if any two balls can be separated by a hyperplane such that it is disjoint from the interior of each ball in the packing. Bezdek, Szalkai and Szalkai (Discrete Math. 339(2): 668-676, 2016) upper bounded the contact numbers of totally separable packings of $n$ unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space in terms of $n$ and $d$. In this paper we improve their upper bound and extend that new upper bound to the so-called locally separable packings of unit balls. We call a packing of unit balls a locally separable packing if each unit ball of the packing together with the unit balls that are tangent to it form a totally separable packing. In the plane, we prove a crystallization result by characterizing all locally separable packings of $n$ unit disks having maximum contact number.

Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a fixed field and let $X$ be a simplicial complex on the vertex set $V$. The Leray number $L(X;\mathbb{F})$ is the minimal $d$ such that for all $i \geq d$ and $S \subset V$, the induced complex $X[S]$ satisfies $\tilde{H}_i(X[S];\mathbb{F})=0$. Leray numbers play a role in formulating and proving topological Helly type theorems. For two complexes $X,Y$ on the same vertex set $V$, define the relative Leray number $L_Y(X;\mathbb{F})$ as the minimal $d$ such that $\tilde{H}_i(X[V \setminus \sigma];\mathbb{F})=0$ for all $i \geq d$ and $\sigma \in Y$. In this paper we extend some results on Leray numbers to the relative setting. In particular, we give an alternative characterization of $L_Y(X;\mathbb{F})$ in terms of links, and prove a relative version of the topological colorful Helly theorem. Our main tools are the Zeeman spectral sequence and a Mayer-Vietoris type spectral sequence.

The aim of this paper is to construct a numerical scheme for solving a class of bilateral free boundaries problem. First, using a shape functional and some regularization terms, an optimal control problem is formulated, in addition, we prove its solution existence's. The first optimality conditions and the shape gradient are computed. the proposed numerical scheme is a genetic algorithm guided conjugate gradient combined with the finite element method, at each mesh regeneration, we perform a mesh refinement in order to avoid any domain singularities. Some numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical results, and to prove the robustness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we further Meirong Zhang, et al.'s work by computing the number of weighted eigenvalues for Sturm-Liouville equations, equipped with general integrable potentials and Dirac weights, under Dirichlet boundary condition. We show that, for a Sturm-Liouville equation with a general integrable potential, if its weight is a positive linear combination of $n$ Dirac Delta functions, then it has at most $n$ (may be less than $n$, or even be $0$) distinct real Dirichlet eigenvalues, or every complex number is a Dirichlet eigenvalue; in particular, under some sharp condition, the number of Dirichlet eigenvalues is exactly $n$. Our main method is to introduce the concepts of characteristics matrix and characteristics polynomial for Sturm-Liouville problem with Dirac weights, and put forward a general and direct algorithm used for computing eigenvalues. A partial linear space is a pair $(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{P}$ is a non-empty set of points and $\mathcal{L}$ is a collection of subsets of $\mathcal{P}$ called lines such that any two distinct points are contained in at most one line, and every line contains at least two points. A partial linear space is proper when it is not a linear space or a graph. A group of automorphisms $G$ of a proper partial linear space acts transitively on ordered pairs of distinct collinear points and ordered pairs of distinct non-collinear points precisely when $G$ is transitive of rank 3 on points. In this paper, we classify the finite proper partial linear spaces that admit rank 3 affine primitive automorphism groups, except for certain families of small groups, including subgroups of $A\Gamma L_1(q)$. Up to these exceptions, this completes the classification of the finite proper partial linear spaces admitting rank 3 primitive automorphism groups. This paper is about quantitative linearization results for the Monge-Ampere equation with rough data. We develop a large-scale regularity theory and prove that if a measure µ is close to the Lebesgue measure in Wasserstein distance at all scales, then the displacement of the macroscopic optimal coupling is quantitatively close at all scales to the gradient of the solution of the corresponding Poisson equation. The main ingredient we use is a harmonic approximation result for the optimal transport plan between arbitrary measures. This is used in a Campanato iteration which transfers the information through the scales.

This paper is concerned with a parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system where both diffusive and chemotactic coefficients (motility functions) depend on the chemical signal density. This system was originally proposed by Keller and Segel in \cite{KS-1971-JTB2} to describe the aggregation phase of {\it Dictyostelium discoideum} cells in response to the secreted chemical signal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), but the available analytical results are very limited by far. Considering system in a bounded smooth domain with Neumann boundary conditions, we establish the global boundedness of solutions in any dimensions with suitable general conditions on the signal-dependent motility functions, which are applicable to a wide class of motility functions. The existence/nonexistence of non-constant steady states is studied and abundant stationary profiles are found. Some open questions are outlined for further pursues. Our results demonstrate that the global boundedness and profile of stationary solutions to the Keller-Segel system with signal-dependent motilities depend on the decay rates of motility functions, space dimensions and the relation between the diffusive and chemotactic motilities, which makes the dynamics immensely wealthy.

In this paper, the application of Ledley antecedence solutions in designing state feedback stabilizers of generic logic systems has been proposed. To make the method feasible, two modifications are made to the original Ledley antecedence solution theory: (i) the preassigned logical functions have been extended from being a set of equations to an admissible set; (ii) the domain of arguments has been extended from the whole state space to a restricted subset. In the proposed method, state feedback controls are considered as a set of extended Ledley antecedence solutions for a designed iterative admissible sets over their corresponding restricted subsets. Based on this, an algorithm has been proposed to verify the solvability, and simultaneously to provide all possible state feedback stabilizers when the problem is solvable. All stabilizers are optimal, which stabilize the logic systems from any initial state to the destination state/state set in the shortest time. The method is firstly demonstrated on Boolean control networks to achieve point stabilization. Then, with some minor modifications, the proposed method is also proven to be applicable to set stabilization problems. Finally, it is shown that in $k$-valued and mix-valued logical systems, the proposed method remains effective., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The aim of this paper is to develop a layer potential theory in L2-based weighted Sobolev spaces on Lipschitz bounded and exterior domains of Rn , n ≥ 3, for the anisotropic Stokes system with L∞ viscosity tensor coefficient satisfying an ellip- ticity condition for symmetric matrices with zero matrix trace. To do this, we explore equivalent mixed variational formulations and prove the well-posedness of some transmission problems for the anisotropic Stokes system in Lipschitz domains of Rn, with the given data in L2-based weighted Sobolev spaces. These results are used to define the volume (Newtonian) and layer potentials and to obtain their properties. Then, we analyze the well-posedness of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the anisotropic Stokes system with L∞ symmetrically elliptic tensor coefficient by representing their solutions in terms of the obtained volume and layer potentials.
