The European Union (EU) presented a uniform List of Waste (LoW) in 2000 and last updated the technical guidance in 2018. The respective local regulations for the classification of waste in Estonia were set in 2015. Due to the changes in the regulations, it was necessary to review the properties of solid wastes generated in Estonian oil shale industry in light of hazardous properties. Therefore, the properties of the produced ash streams were analysed and the obtained results were compared to those for coal for being in accordance with common practices. The main objective of the paper was to answer the question whether the properties of oil shale (OS) are comparable to those of coal as coal and its combustion residues were not considered hazardous waste in Europe, but the respective counterparts of oil shale were. The EU guidelines suggest the use of calculations based on trace element concentrations for the classification of hazardous property (HP) 14 - ecotoxic. Therefore, an extensive study was conducted to investigate the hazardous properties of all the solid residues from power plants operating on oil shale and shale oil production facilities. This paper describes one part of it - the trace element compositions of the major ash streams produced in the Estonian oil shale industry and focuses on their comparison with data available for coal ash samples. The findings of the study showed that, similarly to coal, oil shale ash (OSA) should not be considered as ecotoxic due to the low concentrations of trace elements. It was found that the investigated oil shale ash samples exhibited a very similar composition and properties to those of coal, and as a result of a larger study, from the beginning of 2020, oil shale ash and other oil shale thermal treatment residues are not classified as hazardous waste in Estonia, thereby initiating policy changes that affect most areas of the economy. This article explores the complex relationship between the cooperative movement and the authoritarian state in Estonia from 1934 to 1940. It analyses the dynamics, connections, and tensions that emerged between the co-operative movement - traditionally seen as a grassroots initiative - and the organic-statist, centralising corporatist model promoted by authoritarian regimes across Europe during the interwar period. To begin, the article provides a comprehensive overview of the general shifts in the autonomy of the co-operative movement in Estonia following the introduction of authoritarian rule. Additionally, it analyses the role of the co-operative movement as a potential platform for democratic opposition during the authoritarian period of the 1930s. Finally, the article highlights the fluidity of boundaries between the co-operative from-below and organic-statist corporative models, exemplified through a case study of the Chamber of Co-operative Societies launched in the mid-1930s, an initiative originating from co-operative activists themselves. This is a study of the formation and 1929 electoral campaign of the German-Swedish bloc, an alliance between two of Estonia's national minority parties. Its success shows that by the end of the 1920s, the two groups' shared interests were able to transcend even entrenched historical divisions. Nevertheless, the Swedish party's controversial collaboration with "the Barons" stirred debate and Estonian parties tried to use the controversy to split the Swedish vote. The allies responded by attempting to attract voters from other ethnic groups, including Estonians. The article highlights the importance of minority-to-minority relations in interwar parliamentary democracies and emphasises the significance of minority parties appealing to diverse voter groups. The world energy mix has been confronted with significant challenges since the international circumstances became increasingly complicated. Oil shale is a typical alternative resource to traditional oil, therefore, it is of great significance to re-evaluate its exploitation and utilization status and research trend under the new background. Through the bibliometric analysis of 944 articles on oil shale published between 2012 and 2022 collected from the Web of Science (WoS) database, this research has carried out a review on the global publication and research trend in oil shale relevant studies. It then investigated and compared the research characteristics in three major countries that carry out oil shale related research, to identify the opportunities of oil shale development in different nations under the restriction of diversified factors. The results show that during the last ten years, research on oil shale has experienced a continuous growth in publication quantity and greatly contributed to the oil shale development with the production of highest cited studies. As for the regional characteristics, Estonia focuses on the comprehensive utilization of oil shale and stands out in its engagement in the environment protection, while China and the United States are still accumulating the applied technological research and fundamental science knowledge and conservatively develop the utilization of oil shale. Although different regions have developed different research priorities and strategies due to the differentiated resource reserve, technical condition and environmental pressure, the environment-friendly and efficient utilization of oil shale resource will be the future emphasis of the oil shale development. Trypanites is a common boring in Ordovician hardgrounds of Estonia (Baltica). The depth of the sedimentary basin and sedimentation rates controlled the distribution of Trypanites. The trace-makers’ community was diverse and changing over time. Three ichnospecies of Trypanites can be distinguished: T. sozialis, T. weisei and Trypanites isp. All three morphotypes can be recognized in the same hardground. It is impossible to distinguish between the different ichnospecies based only on the size of the boring aperture. The depth of early lithification of the seafloor determines the morphological variability seen in T. sozialis. The occurrence of elongated borings, such as T. weisei and Trypanites isp., is related to tropical environments, and their trace-makers strongly preferred substrates with a homogeneous and dense texture. The texture and available volume of hard substrate controls the ichnodiversity of Trypanites ichnospecies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conodonts and chitinozoans were studied from the Neitla section, which exposes the boundary between the Porkuni and Juuru regional stages. This level, although not proved biostratigraphically, has been traditionally considered to correspond to the Ordovician–Silurian boundary. However, stable carbon isotope data indicate that the system boundary lies higher in the succession, in the lower part of the Juuru Regional Stage. Rare conodonts and chitinozoans discovered in the section do not provide any criteria for locating the boundary. Although conodonts are represented by taxa characteristic of the Silurian, all of them are known to have already appeared elsewhere in the Upper Ordovician. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the discovery of a rich assemblage of latest Katian and Hirnantian scolecodonts (polychaete jaws) from a new Ordovician–Silurian boundary outcrop in the Reinu quarry, northern Estonia. The recovered polychaete fauna contains at least 40 species attributed to 11 families. Many common taxa appear to range from the latest Katian to the Hirnantian and into the Rhuddanian, indicating the resilience of jawed polychaetes to the end-Ordovician mass extinction. The Reinu assemblage is similar to the coeval faunas known from other Baltic sections, as well as from Anticosti Island, Canada, although with some specific features. The study revealed the highest abundance of scolecodonts in the Ordovician of Baltica, with ca 5400 maxillae per kilogram of rock recorded in the Siuge Member of the Ärina Formation, Porkuni Regional Stage, early Hirnantian. The settlement site of Jägala Jõesuu V is located in northern Estonia in the village of Jõesuu, about 200 m from the eastern bank of the Jägala River and about 2 km from the present-day coast of the Baltic Sea. It was discovered during the fieldwork in 2011, and 275 m² was researched during rescue excavations in the course of road renovation. The remains of one pithouse (partly excavated), several pits and fireplaces were found. The collection of finds (11 454 artefacts and ecofacts) consists of potsherds of Comb Ware, tools and debris of quartz and flint, burnt bones, hazelnut shells, etc. The excavation technique, as well as the fact that the site was a relatively short-term and undisturbed complex, provided a good basis for spatial analysis that identified at least five concentration zones of finds. The largest concentration (61% of all finds) is related to the filling of the pit-house, >2.8 × 5.3 m in size and with pits inside it. The second large concentration zone (10% of all finds) contains the same find categories as the pit-house, but in different proportions, and it is assumed to be the remains of an above-ground construction measuring about 6 × 3 m. Three other concentrations, which in one case mostly contain flint and quartz artefacts (diameter ca 2.5 m) and quartz in the other two cases (ca 1.5 and 3 m in diameter) can be associated with outdoor activities. Most of the Swedish period church interiors in Estonia have lost a significant part of their former richness of detail over the past three hundred years. Whether the cause is wars or natural disasters. Therefore, relatively little secular memorabilia has been studied so far. This article tries to give an overview of this type of object on the basis of archival material, old photographs and individual surviving objects. The fleeting insight into the funeral customs associated with the use of these objects at funerals showed that Estonia was connected to the Swedish-Finnish cultural space and the cultural diffusion took place between these two regions. Depression of the ancient Lumparn meteorite impact structure in the Åland Islands is partly infilled with the lower Palaeozoic sediments, lying presently below sea level. The Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentary cover is distributed in the area of 15 km², with a total thickness of up to 70 m. The Ordovician carbonate rocks of this site, known by the erratic boulders and by the drill­ing project in the late 1950s, are particularly interesting because of the isolated distant position of this outlier from other distribution areas of the Ordovician sediments preserved in the Baltoscandian Palaeobasin. Ordovician sections in the Lumparn Bay are com­posed of two distinct lithological units. The older, argillaceous wackestone-packstone unit has been tradi­tionally named ‘Orthoceras limestone‘ or ‘Orthoceratite Limestone’, and the younger micritic limestone unit is addressed as ‘Östersjö Limestone’ (or ‘Baltic Limestone’). Here we present new data on ostracod biostratigraphy and stable carbon isotope chemo­stratigraphy derived from three old drillcores from the Tranvik area of the Lumparn Bay. The comparison of ostracod distribution with its succession in Estonia generally supports the previous Darriwilian and Sandbian age interpretations for the Orthoceras Limestone. Considering the ostracod distribution together with earlier acritarch and conodont datings, stable carbon isotopic data and limestone lithology, the Orthoceras Limestone unit might correspond to the Kunda, Aseri, Lasnamägi, Uhaku, Kukruse, Haljala, and Keila regional stages (RSs). The Österjö Limestone comprises almost the entire Katian, corresponding to the Rakvere, Nabala, Vormsi and Pirgu RSs in the Baltoscandian stratigraphic chart. The uppermost sample yielded the most abundant and diverse assemblage of ostracods that suggests it to correspond to the Vormsi or lower-middle Pirgu (late Katian) RSs. The global Middle Darriwilian Carbon Isotopic Excursion (MDICE) and Guttenberg Carbon Isotopic Excursion (GICE) as well as the Katian Rakvere and Saunja carbon isotopic excursions are recorded in the studied succession. The δ13Ccarb bulk rock curve of the Orthoceras Limestone shows a positive excursion up to 1‰ in the lower part of the interval followed by a negative excursion up to –1‰ in the middle part and another positive excursion reaching 2‰ in the upper part of the interval. This curve resembles well the carbon isotope curve from the Darriwilian and Sandbian in the core sections of the Hiiumaa Island, NW Estonia, and could be interpreted as the MDICE and the rising limb of the GICE. The δ13C curve of the Östersjö Limestone interval shows two positive excursions. The lower one comprises most likely the peak of the Rakvere Excursion (Rakvere RS) in Estonia, which is also supported by the ostracod data. The upper carbon isotopic excursion may represent the Saunja Excursion correlated with the upper part of the Nabala RS. The ostracod biofacies characterized by faunal associations of both the Orthoceras and Östersjö limestone units, and the lithological succession of these units suggest more similarities with the Estonian Shelf facies (North Estonian Confacies) than Scandinavian Basin facies of the Baltoscandian Palaeobasin.
