An extensive sociological literature maintains that cultural capital is pivotal in perpetuating social inequalities. However, empirical tests of cultural capital theory focus on how culture influences educational outcomes, not earnings, and they mainly look for cultural differences across social classes within societies. We propose a direct test of economic returns to cultural capital based instead on differences in national cultures across countries. Using the American Community Survey and the National Survey of College Graduates, we analyze the relationship between immigrants' lack of U.S.-specific cultural capital, proxied by cultural distance between the origin country and the U.S., and their earnings. Findings consistently indicate that origin – U.S. cultural distance is linked to immigrants' lower earnings after controlling for numerous other factors, supporting cultural capital theory. Cultural distance earnings penalties are more pronounced for immigrants with at least a bachelor's degree, those arriving in adulthood, and those with foreign degrees. Moreover, county-level analysis reveals more sizable cultural distance penalties in more competitive and unequal labour markets, highlighting how subnational receiving contexts shape origin-country disparities in immigrants' economic incorporation at their destinations. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the functions of lncRNA H19 on glomerular endothelial structural damage of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Materials and Methods: Rats were fed a high sugar and fat high feed die, and intraperitoneally administrated with streptozotocin (30 mg/kg) to induce DN model. Meanwile, rat glomerular endothelial cells (rGEnCs) were treated with high a level of glucose （HG, 30 mM glucose）to induce structural damage. Results: Our results showed that H19 level was drastically increased in diabetic glomeruli and high-glucose (HG)-stimulated rat glomerular endothelial cells (rGEnCs). Deficiency of H19 ameliorated microalbumin, creatinine, BUN, and histopathological alterations in diabetic rats. In addition, H19 deficiency significantly attenuated the damage of endothelial structure by upregulating the expression of junction proteins ZO-1 and Occludin, glycolcalyx protein Syndecan-1, and endothelial activation marker sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1 in diabetic rats. The in vitro results also showed that H19-siRNA alleviated glycocalyx shedding, tight junctions damage, and endothelial activation in HG-stimulated rGEnCs. Moreover, H19 deficiency significantly enhanced the expression of p-Akt and p-eNOS and NO concentration in vitro and in vivo. Pre-treatment with Akt inhibitor LY294002 abrogated these favourable effects mediated by H19 deficiency. Despite the growing perception of and concern about the rising cost burden of out-of-school education on families in China, few studies to date have comprehensively examined how family investment in out-of-school education has changed over time. Capitalizing on longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) for 2010–2018, this study analyzes the trend in family investment in children's out-of-school education (measured by children's rates of participation and families' absolute and relative monetary expenditure) during that period. We also examine how this trend differs by family socioeconomic status (SES) and by children's level of schooling (preschool, primary school, junior high school). Our results show a large and growing number of families invest in out-of-school education in their children's preschool years, with a significant SES gradient. Furthermore, family investment in out-of-school education has increased significantly between 2010 and 2018, with SES disparities in investment persisting and even widening during the same period. In this study, sodium oleate (NaOL) was employed as a collector to examine the role and adsorption mechanism of a novel regulator, the polyether polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE-11), in the flotation separation of brucite and serpentine. Efficient separation of brucite and serpentine was achieved under the reagent system with the PCE-11 dosage of 600 mg/L, NaOL dosage of 320 mg/L, and pulp pH of 11. Surface wettability analysis revealed that PCE-11 diminishes the hydrophobicity of serpentine in the NaOL system. Zeta potential analysis and adsorption capacity analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in NaOL adsorption capacity on the serpentine surface following interaction with PCE-11. Infrared spectrum analysis and XPS analysis revealed that PCE-11 is adsorbed on the surface of both brucite and serpentine, with a certain number of Mg sites remaining bonded to NaOL after PCE-11 occupies part of the Mg sites on the brucite surface. However, PCE-11 impedes NaOL adsorption on serpentine surfaces, enhancing the floatability difference between the two minerals. An eco-friendly agent, the polyether polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE-11), is utilized to the separation of brucite and serpentine. PCE-11 demonstrates a good inhibition effect on serpentine. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and it's of great importance to understand its underlying mechanisms and find new treatments. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is an active lipid that exerts its effects through S1P receptors on the cell surface or intracellular signal, and regulates many cellular processes such as cell growth, cell proliferation, cell migration, cell survival, and so on. S1PR modulators are a class of modulators that can interact with S1PR subtypes to activate receptors or block their activity, exerting either agonist or functional antagonist effects. Many studies have shown that S1P plays a protective role in the cardiovascular system and regulates cardiac physiological functions mainly through interaction with cell surface S1P receptors (S1PRs). Therefore, S1PR modulators may play a therapeutic role in cardiovascular diseases. Here, we review five S1PRs and their functions and the progress of S1PR modulators. In addition, we focus on the effects of S1PR modulators on atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury, diabetic cardiovascular diseases, and myocarditis, which may provide valuable insights into potential therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular disease. This paper introduces a path-following control method for autonomous ground vehicle with significant input delays. First, a vehicle path-following model including input delay is developed. Then, a robust predictive controller design is developed, in which a delay estimator as well as a state predictor is adopted so that control law design as well as controller gain calculation can be conducted without considering the input delay. Thus, the controller synthesis work can be greatly simplified. Finally, comparative co-simulation tests with Matlab/Simulink and Carsim are presented to verify the efficiency as well as the performance of the proposed path-following control approach. With the rapid development of the lithium (Li)-ion battery industry in electric vehicles (EVs) and electronic devices, coal-based Li ore is expected to be a new-type Li resource to meet the rapidly growing demand for Li. However, the traditional Li extraction process involves high temperature to activate minerals. Herein, a low-temperature sulfuric acid baking followed by water leaching was investigated in this study. The influences of baking and leaching conditions on Li leaching rate were explored in detail. Under the optimal conditions of 70 wt% H2SO4, baking temperature 180°C, baking time 1 h, leaching temperature 25°C, and leaching time 1 h, the Li leaching rate reached 84.42%. In addition, the sequential chemical extraction, XRD, and SEM-EDS results indicated that Al-Li-containing minerals were converted to soluble minerals during the baking process with sulfuric acid and then were extracted through water leaching into the solution. The traditional approach to studying intergenerational influences has been limited to a single-stranded framework, with a focus on the transmission of socioeconomic status across two generations. In this paper, we develop a theoretical model of dual-pathway intergenerational influence over multiple generations and test the model by utilizing recent high-quality three-generation panel data from China. The model consists of two intertwined pathways: a socioeconomic pathway measured with educational attainment and a psychological pathway measured with mindset. We show that mindset is a fundamental psychological factor strongly associated with multiple outcomes, including cognitive skills, personalities, and attitudes. Intergenerational influences operate via the transmissions of both mindset and socioeconomic status as well as the cross-domain pathways between the two. The Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta are two regions with the highest level of economic development in China, and their port development is at the forefront of the country. This study measures the efficiency of 23 major ports in the two deltas from 2010 to 2018 using the meta Dynamic Directional Distance Function (D.D.F.) model and discusses the technology gap and the reasons for inefficiency of the ports. The research results show that 80% of the ports in these two deltas are inefficient. The Yangtze River Delta's port efficiency is higher than that of the Pearl River Delta, but the internal efficiency difference of the Yangtze River Delta port cluster is more significant. The efficiency ranking of most ports is inconsistent under the meta-frontier (M.F.) and group frontier (G.F.), and the average technology gap ratio (T.G.R.) of ports in the Pearl River Delta gradually exceeds that in the Yangtze River Delta. The inefficiency of ports in the Pearl River Delta is caused by input factors, and the inefficiency of ports in the Yangtze River Delta is also related to the containerisation level. Under the background of the resource-based view, it is of great significance to assess the mechanism through which knowledge transfer received dimensions (tacit and explicit) affect enterprise innovation performance. Explicitly, the study proposes a moderated moderation model of entrepreneurial opportunity types (innovative and imitative) and environmental dynamism to address this mechanism. In a sample of 314 foreign subsidiaries located in China, we find that: (1) Knowledge transfer received types have a positive influence on enterprise innovation performance, (2) The positive influence is contingent on innovative opportunities, whereas no significant association exists among imitative opportunities, explicit knowledge transfer received, and enterprise innovation performance, (3) The positive effect of innovative opportunities on the knowledge transfer received dimensions-innovation performance links increases when the environmental dynamism is in high tempo. Our paper highlights the importance of incorporating entrepreneurial opportunities and environmental dynamism in probing successful knowledge transfer received dimensions-innovation performance links. The primary objective of this study was to explore whether antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) that reduce LncNR_040117 expression in patients with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS)-induced recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), and further decrease apoptosis and improve trophoblasts invasion through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. This paper aimed to provide a new strategy to treat APS-induced RPL. In this study, we used quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT–qPCR) to analyze the expression level of LncNR 040117 in HTR-8/SVneo cells following transfection with ASOs. Then we utilized Western blotting to test the expression levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), intracellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and key molecules of MAPK pathways, including the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and p38. In addition, we examined the HTR-8/SVneo cells apoptosis by cell apoptosis assay, and migration and invasion by transwell antibody assay. Each experiment was repeated three times. The data are presented as the means ± SDs, and statistical comparisons were performed using Student's t-test. p < 0.05 was considered significant. Transfected with ASOs, LncNR_040117 was downregulated in trophoblasts compared with APS-induced RPL patients. And LncNR_040117 low expression induced IL-1β and downstream adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1expression level decreased, as well as MAPK pathways downregulation, including the ERK pathway, JNK pathway and p38/MAPK pathway. Furthermore, all these changes resulted in decreased apoptosis and increased migration and invasion of trophoblasts. This study indicated that ASOs that decrease LncNR_040117 expression can reduce apoptosis and enhance the invasion and migration of trophoblasts by regulating the MAPK pathway. Atg11 is an adaptor protein required for the induction of selective autophagy via receptor binding. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which it regulates selective autophagy remains incomplete. Here, we show that Atg11 is phosphorylated by Atg1. Rapamycin treatment or starvation conditions induced slower electrophoretic mobility of Atg11 in an Atg1 kinase activity-dependent manner. Through in vitro kinase assays combined with mutagenesis, we determined that Atg1 phosphorylates S949, S1057, and S1064 residues in CC4 domain of Atg11. Replacing the three residues with alanine suppressed the cleavage of selective autophagy substrates for the cytoplasm-to-vacuole targeting (Cvt) pathway, mitophagy, reticulophagy, and pexophagy. The Atg11 mutant was defective in binding to related selective autophagy receptors. These results demonstrate a previously unknown function of Atg1 in regulation of selective autophagy via Atg11 phosphorylation. Innovation plays an influential role in the firm's development and sustainability in an exhaustively aggressive business environment. Yet extant literature has not considered the influence of management innovation (MI) on firm innovation performance (FIP) in emerging economies. Building upon the dynamic capabilities view, we construct a moderated moderation model to address how MI affects FIP. Explicitly, we investigate whether the linkage amongst MI and FIP is contingent on absorptive capacity (AC) and environmental dynamism (ED). Using a dataset from 314 firms operating in the manufacturing and service industries in China. Our findings through hierarchical linear modelling reveal that: (1) MI affects FIP positively; (2) AC affects the linkage amongst MI and FIP positively; (3) AC impacts on the linkage amongst MI and FIP upsurges when ED is high than low. With China–U.S. relations becoming simultaneously more integrated and complex, it is all the more important to understand the nature and determinants of reciprocal perceptions between Chinese and American publics. Using nationally representative, bi-national public opinion surveys, this article compares the attitudes of Chinese toward the U.S. with those of Americans toward China. The article gives primary attention to generalized attitudes toward each country but also studies domain-specific attitudes. The results suggest that Chinese hold more-favorable attitudes toward the U.S. than do Americans toward China. Chinese and Americans also differ on domain-specific issues. Chinese place greater importance on sovereignty issues and territorial disputes, while Americans give greater attention to universal values such as human rights and environmental degradation. A new diketopiperazine, cyclo-(d-8-acetoxyl-Pro-l-Leu) (1), together with eight known compounds (2–9) including three enterotoxins (2–4), four diketopiperazines (5–8) and maltol (9), were isolated from the mangrove derived-soil Streptomyces sp. SCSIO 41400. The planar structures of all compounds were determined from analysis of NMR spectra, MS, optical rotation and comparing with literature data. The absolute configuration of compound 1 was assigned by electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The isolated compounds (1–9) were tested for their acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and pancreatic lipase (PL) enzyme inhibitory activities. Among them, the new diketopiperazine (1) displayed preferable PL enzyme inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 27.3 μg/mL, while compounds 2, 5 and 6 showed weak PL enzyme inhibitory activity. Further molecular docking simulation exhibited that compound 1 could be well bind with the catalytic pocket of the PL. Besides, compound 9 showed moderate antibacterial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with MIC value of 12.5 μg/mL, which was comparable to that of the positive control ampicillin with MIC value of 3.125 μg/mL. China's impact on the world has been increasing in the past few decades. How is the rest of the world reacting to China's rise? One way to answer this question is to study public attitudes toward China. This article examines the trends, patterns, and determinants of public attitudes toward China in other countries by analyzing data from opinion surveys in the years 2005 to 2018. Two motivating hypotheses guide this article's analyses. First, public attitudes toward China in developing or less-developed countries are economy-oriented, with China's involvement in a local economy leading to a more positive attitude toward the country. Second, public attitudes toward China in developed countries are ideology-oriented, with an emphasis on values and beliefs. The study concludes that public opinion on China has experienced a downward trend overall, especially in developed and democratic countries. Moreover, China's foreign direct investment in a given country is positively associated with favorable opinion, while Chinese exports to other countries are negatively associated with favorable opinion. The US public holds more nuanced views about China than are typically captured in public opinion surveys. Empirical investigation of a nationwide online survey of US adults shows that the American public is sharply divided over the US–China trade war, despite reporting high support for international trade with China (76%). Using survey questions on US–China trade and the trade war, a typology was developed that indicates more than 40% of US adults support trade with China but oppose the trade war. A slightly smaller share has a more economically militant view of trade with China, supporting trade and the trade war. Political identity is strongly associated with attitudes toward the trade war, but only weakly associated with attitudes toward trade with China. Perceptions about China and its government, people, and culture are highly correlated with views on trade with China but are unrelated to views on the trade war. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we explored the role and mechanism of repulsive guidance molecule B (RGMb, also known as Dragon) in the protective effects of curcumin against renal fibrosis and verified Dragon's effect on renal tubular epithelial cell apoptosis and cell programmability. Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) was surgically induced in rats to establish a model of renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF). The rats were then treated with curcumin. Curcumin prominently decreased the serum creatinine (SCr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, and also improved the tubular injury in the UUO-induced rats. Curcumin significantly downregulated the TGF-β1, P-Smad2/3, cleaved caspase-3, cleaved caspase-8 and Dragon levels. Dragon knockdown also markedly reduced the TGF-β1, P-Smad2/3, Smad2/3, cleaved caspase-3, cleaved caspase-8, fibronectin, collagen I, collagen IV, vimentin, and α-SMA expression levels. Conversely, Dragon overexpression caused higher expression levels of these proteins, and curcumin reversed this effect. Furthermore, Dragon knockdown increased the E-cadherin levels, whereas Dragon overexpression decreased these levels. Overexpressing Dragon significantly decreased the cell viability, and curcumin reversed this effect. In conclusion, curcumin acted on Dragon and attenuated RIF in UUO rat models. Curcumin downregulated the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway and inhibited Dragon and fibrogenic molecules in both rats and HK-2 cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are many conflicting theories about the relationship between media reports and public opinion, but few of them are supported by empirical work on large data sets. We use sentiment results on over 260,000 China-related articles in The New York Times to show that events in international relations affect media sentiment which, in turn, affects public opinion. We find that sudden shifts in US-China relations are accompanied by changes in how The New York Times covers China and that the news reporting on China leads public opinion on China by 1 year. Our work illustrates how The New York Times, a prestigious mass media institution, propagates international relation signals to shape American views of the Chinese state and the Chinese people. AbstractEfferocytosis refers to the process by which phagocytes remove apoptotic cells and related apoptotic products. It is essential for the growth and development of the body, the repair of damaged or inflamed tissues, and the balance of the immune system. Damaged efferocytosis will cause a variety of chronic inflammation and immune system diseases. Many studies show that efferocytosis is a process mediated by mitochondria. Mitochondrial metabolism, mitochondrial dynamics, and communication between mitochondria and other organelles can all affect phagocytes’ clearance of apoptotic cells. Therefore, targeting mitochondria to modulate phagocyte efferocytosis is an anticipated strategy to prevent and treat chronic inflammatory diseases and autoimmune diseases. In this review, we introduced the mechanism of efferocytosis and the pivoted role of mitochondria in efferocytosis.
