This study presents geochemical, petrophysical and seismic interpretation and modeling data of source and reservoir rocks of Eocene and Paleocene sequences of Balkassar oilfield, Potwar Basin, Pakistan. Integrated approaches were applied to evaluate structure and various rocks i.e., Patala, Lockhart and Chorgali formations. Grid of eleven seismic lines, well logs, well tops and ten fresh rock cutting samples were used. TOC content of Patala Formation ranges between 0.25 − 1.16 wt. %, with S2 values 0.11–0.63 mg HC/g rock, thus indicating poor to fair hydrocarbon potentialwhich issupported by no distinct presence of hydrocarbon peaks in pyrolysis-GC pyrograms. Petrographic analysis showed dominant presence of vitrinitic Type III and inertinitic Type IV kerogen phytoclasts with minor amount of AOM. High abundance of reworked vitrinite and inertinite phytoclasts appear to have influenced the vitrinite reflectance data. Basin modeling predicts Lockhart Formation began oil generation at 10.30Ma age at depth 1557 m and reached peak generation at 8.43Ma age at depth 1802 m. Patala formation began oil generation at 10.56Ma age at depth 1472 m and reached its peak generation at 8.43Ma age at depth of 1768 m. 3D horizon mapping depicts that Chorgali formation is uniformly distributed and faulted from northwest corner. This study presents U-Pb zircon ages and Lu-Hf zircon isotope data for Cretaceous-Paleocene plutonic rocks along a W-E transect in northwestern Mexico. These data are combined with tectonic reconstruction that restores Late Cenozoic extensional deformation and shows the position of magmatism at 36 Ma. Zircon U-Pb ages results span from 142 to 58 Ma and demonstrate that the continental arc migrated northeastward at 1–2.5 km/Myr. These rates are slower than previously interpreted, but consistent with landward arc migration rates observed in the Andes. Weighted mean initial epsilon hafnium (εHf(t)) values of plutonic rocks along the transect range from + 8.8 to −9.1. The heterogeneity in the zircon εHf(t) is spatially related to the pre-Cretaceous basement provinces that the intrusive rocks were emplaced into. Zircon εHf(t) values of western Baja California display positive values ranging from + 8.8 to + 2.6 suggesting they were formed from a moderately depleted mantle and were emplaced into the Guerrero-Alisitos-Vizcaino terrane. Zircon εHf(t) values in the eastern part of Baja California and most of Sonora are heterogeneous ranging between −0.7 and −9.1 and may be formed from a relatively slightly more evolved mantle source and end up more evolved after crustal assimilation of metasediments. Zircon εHf(t) values ranging from + 8.7 to + 2.9 in Chihuahua are consistent with a depleted-mantle derived melt and assimilation of Grenville lithospheric province. Our results highlight how Hf isotopic signatures help to constrain the pre-Cretaceous basement configuration in northwestern Mexico despite the few exposed outcrops along the transect. A palynological study of the uppermost Cretaceous–lowermost Paleocene sequences of the Deccan volcanic province in the Mandla Lobe of central India was carried out to understand floral diversity, palaeoecology and palaeoclimate during Deccan volcanic activity (67.4–62.5 Ma). The study involved 17 intertrappean sedimentary beds at 13 stratigraphical levels. The analysis shows the presence of a rich and diverse palynoflora represented by 47 genera and 61 species of pteridophytes, gymnosperms, algae and fungi. Among these, we recognised three new genera and 10 new species. At the lower stratigraphical levels (582–602 m above sea level), Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) age marker palynomorphs, namely Azolla cretacea, Farabeipollis minutus, Jiangsupollis striatus and J. intertrappea sp. nov., and the dominance of Gabonisporis vigourouxii and Aquilapollenites bengalensis were recorded. At the higher stratigraphical levels (698–858 m above sea level), Early Paleocene (Danian) age marker palynomorphs, such as Haloragacidites amolosus, Longapertites vaneendenburgii, Mulleripollis bolpurensis, Palmaepollenites nadhamunii and P. eocenicus, were recorded. The palynoassemblages and associated clay minerals indicate the deposition of intertrappean beds in a fluctuating climate, ranging from humid and semiarid to arid, and the prevalence of estuarine to freshwater depositional environments at the time of deposition. High-precision ages of Cenozoic volcanic rocks in northeast China are widely reported recently. However, the systematic analysis of spatio-temporal distribution of Cenozoic volcanism, which is important for reconstructing and constraining regional tectonic evolution, is still limited. Here, we collected published geochronological data from more than 400 Cenozoic volcanic samples in northeast China. Combined with field observations of volcanic rock samples and three valid 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data obtained in this study, we compile geochronological data in northeast China and explore a new spatio-temporal distribution pattern for the Cenozoic volcanism in order to constrain geodynamic models for northeast China. Our results show that the Cenozoic volcanism in northeast China has a horseshoe-shaped distribution, and the volcanism almost existed from Paleocene to Quaternary, which can be roughly divided into six volcanic belts. Our results suggest that the volcanism in this region is centred on around the Songliao Basin, then migrates eastward, and eventually has end up with a series of intense activity around the Songliao Basin. This may be related to the upwelling of the asthenosphere caused by the subduction of the Pacific plate and the opening of the Japan Sea. Our study also reveals that Chuandishan basalt in Dunhua area formed by Early Oligocene volcanic activity, which differs from the Pliocene or Miocene stratigraphic ages assumed before. Late Cretaceous lateral facies and thickness changes are common in the southern Tethyan margin, especially during the final rifting stages of the Tethys and its early onset of closure. Particularly, northern Tunisia, being located closure to a plate boundary, represents an important area to investigate the tectonic influence on sedimentation. In this paper, detailed sedimentological, biostratigraphical and tectonic studies carried out in north-central Tunisia (Serj-Bargou area) to provide more data and precisions on the lithostratigraphy framework and tectonic control on Late Cretaceous deposits. Investigation of field data, high-resolution biostratigraphy, gravity data analysis and lithostratigraphic correlations of strata deposited during the Late Cretaceous allowed us to precisely determine the timing of unconformities and constrain the history of the subsidence inversion of the basin. Three major unconformities have been identified in the SW of Jebel Bargou and span the period from Coniacian to Maastrichtian. These unconformities are marked by Paleocene marls (containing the G. trinidadensis biozone) that unconformably overlie the Late Coniacian series (containing the D. concavata biozone), indicating an early tectonic compressional event in the Late Cretaceous, that probably started in Turonian. Similar tectonic inversion events have already been identified in other Tunisia areas and in the surrounding regional context within the northern and southern Tethyan margin during the Late Cretaceous. This inversion could be explained by a Santonian compressional event, which might have started earlier, in the context of the convergence between African and European plates. The inversion is reflected stratigraphically across the African margin and the intraplate basins, such as the Serj Bargou basin, by a highly reduced accommodation space and unconformities. This tectonic inversion indicates the effects of the change in the poles of rotation related to the opening of the Atlantic at about 83–85 Ma on the former North African passive margin. The tectonic evolution of the Lishui Sag in the East China Sea Shelf Basin significantly influences its sequence stratigraphy. By integrating seismic reflections, well logs and core data, this study examines the quantitative activity of the Lingfeng fault, sequence framework and sequence architecture in the Lishui Sag. The Paleocene succession is divided into one second-order sequence (SSQ1), three third-order sequences (SQ1–SQ3) and nine system tracts, representing a complete syn-rift evolution consisting of initial syn-rift, rift climax and late syn-rift stages. The results indicate that the differential activity of the Lingfeng fault shapes the basin structure and controls the subsidence centre, leading to prominent variations in the spatial distribution and filling of the sequence stratigraphy during different tectonic stages. The initial syn-rift sequence (SQ1), characterised by a low activity of the segmented Lingfeng fault, is primarily found in isolated small sub-sags. The rift climax sequence (SQ2), with increasing displacement and longer segmented fault zones, exhibits a wedge-shaped filling pattern with substantial topographic elevation differences. The late syn-rift sequence (SQ3) shows a gradual decrease in tectonic activity and uniform filling, with all system tracts within the sequences fully developed. The sequence architecture of the hanging wall in the Lishui Sag can be classified into fault-scarp and fault-slope type, whereas the sequence architecture of the hanging wall dip-slope can be classified into sedimentary slope-break and faulted slope-break. The Lingfeng fault controlled the tectonic evolution, sedimentary subsidence centre and sequence filling and architecture in the Paleocene rifted Lishui Sag. IODP Site U1509 (Expedition 371), New Caledonia Trough, provides a rare latest Cretaceous–Paleocene record from offshore northern Zealandia. We present new palynomorph and benthic foraminiferal assemblage data that show a transition from a latest Cretaceous vegetated sediment source region to a fully oceanic environment in the Paleocene. Latest Cretaceous (c. 68–66 Ma) non-calcareous claystone was deposited in upper bathyal paleodepths, with abundant plant microfossils that were likely transported in a northwest direction through the Aotea Basin region. A 2–3 Myr unconformity is identified at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. Middle early–late Paleocene (c. 63.5–56 Ma) calcareous claystone shows evidence of deepening, deposited in middle bathyal or deeper paleodepths, and terrestrial input is minor. This latest Cretaceous to Paleocene deepening trend is consistent with inferred evolution of the Aotea and Northland basins further to the east, and other sparse northern Zealandia records, which show a common pattern of post-rift transgression consistent with long-term subsidence. Site U1509 allows for biogeographic extension and modification of the New Zealand Paleocene dinoflagellate zonation, description of a new dinoflagellate and pollen species, better inference of regional paleogeography, and may provide insights into the onset of western Pacific subduction initiation. We here report on the first lizard fossils from the Deccan intertrappean strata (latest Cretaceous/Palaeocene) exposed at Kesavi, District Dhar in the Malwa Plateau of lower Narmada Valley, central India. The material is only fragmentary, but tentatively three tooth morphotypes of non-acrodontan lizards can be identified. Besides these, two oblong osteoderms, resembling paramacellodid osteoderms, are described as Squamata indet. The 4th isolated tooth is questionably referred to Squamata. Although the intertrappean deposits of the Deccan volcanic province have been explored for over three decades, lizards are scarce and many aspects remain unclear. However, the tentative absence of agamids in Kesavi and other localities yielding pre-Eocene deposits (e.g., Naskal and Kisalpuri) appears to be interesting, because a high diversity of agamids has been reported from early Eocene localities of India. There is, in contrast, a total absence of non-acrodontan lizards. The contrast between pre-Eocene and Eocene localities seems to be puzzling in the context of India's supposed physical isolation from Asia during this time. Only future researches can shed light on that. Although the material described here brings only limited new insight, it supports that non-acrodontan lizards were present in India during the latest Cretaceous/earliest Palaeocene. After about a century, the skull of the holotype and sole specimen of Arambourgia gaudryi from the Eocene of Quercy (France) is here redescribed. Its interest resides in its extreme morphology, such as its very small skull and altirostral condition, that raises questions about its maturity, taxonomic validity, and paleoecology. In order to reveal previously hidden anatomical details, we used computed microtomography (µCT-scan) data to digitally extract the bones of the cranium and mandible, as well as the endocranial structures. Here, we update the osteological description of A. gaudryi, outlining new characters and re-evaluating anatomical details. Comparing it with ontogenetic series of extant crocodylians, we confirm that the specimen is a mature individual of a dwarf species with pedomorphic features. Our phylogenetic analyses indicate that A. gaudryi is an alligatorine. Comparisons with other small alligatoroid taxa show that it is indeed a valid species. The depositional environment of the finding site suggests a continental context with a karstic network. Taking this into account, together with its peculiar anatomy, we propose that A. gaudryi was a semi-terrestrial animal occupying an ecological niche similar to that of extant juvenile or dwarf crocodylians. Finally, we discuss the current knowledge of the paleobiogeography of Alligatoroidea in Europe during the Paleogene. Arambourgia gaudryi was likely part of a group of small early globidontans that arrived in the Old World, probably from North America, around the end of the Paleocene and that dispersed to at least four localities of the ancient European archipelago. The Paleocene deposits from the Cerrejón Formation (Colombia, South America) have provided abundant snake remains. All this material has been assigned to the giant snake Titanoboa cerrejonensis. Here, we describe six vertebrae from among the referred materials that do not correspond to Titanoboa. All six vertebrae are morphologically identical, of a similar size, and display a distinct morphology that differs from Titanoboa. This new and unnamed taxon is a large snake estimated to be around eight meters in total length. Anatomical comparisons show that these vertebrae possess certain features typical of the Palaeophiidae, a group of extinct snakes of uncertain relationships known almost exclusively from vertebrae. Among the Palaeophiidae, the new taxon resembles the more generalized forms assigned to the genus Palaeophis, but lacks the extreme aquatic adaptations that define forms assigned to the genus Pterosphenus. We regard the new taxon as an undetermined palaeophiine but do not assign it to Palaeophis as a number of features differ from that described genus. This new record expands the known diversity of aquatic snakes from the Paleogene of South America and provides a substantial new record for the paleogeographic distribution of the Palaeophiidae. The oldest records are from the Cretaceous of Africa, while Paleocene records are poorly known and restricted to Africa, North America, and Europe. The majority of vertebral forms assigned to Palaeophiidae are from the Eocene, principally from the Tethys region, with only one previous South American record coming from the Eocene of Ecuador. The Paleocene Paskapoo Formation in Alberta, Canada, offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into insect diversity at that time. This fossil insect-rich formation has yielded a variety of fossil arthropod specimens, including several wings of Odonata related to the genus Alloaeschna Wighton and Wilson, 1986. Here, we demonstrate that morphological characters previously used to separate three species are instead the result of intraspecific variability. We reinforce this demonstration using two examples of high variability and plasticity in modern species of the family Aeshnidae. Accordingly, we reinterpreted the taxonomic position of Alloaeschna marklae Wighton and Wilson, 1986 syn. nov. and Alloaeschna quadrata Wighton and Wilson, 1986 syn. nov. as junior synonyms of Alloaeschna paskapooensis Wighton and Wilson, 1986. In addition, we describe the first occurrence of a zygopteran in the Paskapoo Formation, namely Albertalestes paskapooensis gen. et sp. nov. (Synlestidae). Importantly, this new taxon is the first representative of the family found in North America. We also reconstructed the relationships within the Synlestidae under Bayesian inferences with a newly assembled matrix. Bauhinia s.s. is a large genus in the family Fabaceae, but its evolutionary and biogeographical history is still unclear due to the scarcity of fossil records compared to the highly diverse modern species in pantropic regions. Here, we report the earliest fossil record of Bauhinia s.s., namely Bauhinia tibetensis Y. Gao et T. Su sp. nov., based on leaves from the latest Paleocene of the southern Tibetan region. Combined with palaeoecological niche simulations and ancestral state reconstruction, the new fossils suggested a Paleocene origin of Bauhinia s.s. in the Afrotropical realm that subsequently dispersed to the Neotropical and Indomalayan realms. Bauhinia tibetensis belongs to the Asian clade of Bauhinia s.s. that reached the southern Tibetan region from the Afrotropical realm via the Kohistan-Ladakh Island Arc in the early Paleocene. This clade spread to south-eastern China during the Oligocene and entered northern India during the Neogene or earlier. The discovery of the oldest Bauhinia s.s. from what is now the southern Tibetan Plateau updates our understanding of the biogeographical history of this genus and demonstrates that the Kohistan-Ladakh Island Arc is an ancient corridor for floristic interchange between Africa and India. The record of articulated marine fish fossils during the latest Cretaceous and earliest Cenozoic is sparse. The oldest-known definitive squirrelfishes and soldierfishes, like the first examples of many extant reef-dwelling clades, are known from early Eocene deposits of Europe. Here, we describe a new genus and species of holocentroid (Teleostei: Beryciformes: Holocentroidea) based on material from three individuals from early Paleocene (Danian) deposits of New Jersey, USA using micro-computed tomography. The specimens comprise a three-dimensionally preserved skull and partial postcranium, plus two isolated neurocrania. The new taxon, †Iridopristis parrisi, possesses a unique combination of characters, including a heterosulcoid otolith morphology and an edentulous premaxillary tooth-gap, while lacking a newly proposed character for the remainder of Cenozoic holocentroids: a lamina on the lateral surface of the anguloarticular, anterior to the jaw joint. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of morphological, stratigraphical and molecular data under the fossilized birth-death process finds that the new taxon branches from the holocentrid stem, where it is joined by two of the three squirrelfish genera from the early Eocene (Ypresian) of Bolca, Italy. We estimate a Danian divergence between Myripristinae and Holocentrinae, the two reciprocally monophyletic subfamilies of Holocentridae. Pollen and spores were recovered from the Paleocene Fort Union Formation and Paleocene–Eocene Willwood Formation of the Bighorn Basin (BHB), northwestern Wyoming, USA. In many local stratigraphic sections in the BHB, the base of the Eocene has been identified by the characteristic negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) that marks the beginning of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). The palynotaxa from outcrop samples were examined using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Seven new species are formally described (Tricolpites vegrandis, Rousea spatium, Striatricolporites astutus, Striatopollis calidarius, Friedrichipollis geminus, Retistephanocolporites modicrassus and Retistephanocolporites pergrandis). The temporal and geographic distributions of many of these palynotaxa suggest that hotter and more seasonally dry climates facilitated their northward range shifts during the PETM from the tropics or subtropics of the USA. For the temperate palynotaxa, the hotter and seasonally dry conditions resulted in local extirpation. A re-evaluation of the palynostratigraphic schemes established for the Paleocene–Eocene boundary confirms that the first appearance of Platycarya platycaryoides denotes the Paleocene–Eocene boundary in the Rocky Mountains region. A new Striatopollis calidarius Subzone, associated with early Wasatchian (Wa) Wa-0 and Wa-R faunas, is also recognized for CIE body localities in the BHB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary fern-spore spike concept was first introduced by R.H. Tschudy 40 years ago and established the precept that ferns are so-called 'disaster taxa' that flourish after natural disasters because of the high colonization potential of their wind-blown spores. Among the least understood topics at the crux of contemporary K/Pg boundary fern-spike studies is whether Stenochlaena-like or other stem blechnaceous ferns were among those that flourished after the K/Pg event, contributing to the Laevigatosporites-dominated phase of the fern-spore spike. For instance, dispersed Stenochlaena-like spores – e.g. Polypodiisporites usmensis (van der Hammen) Khan & Martin – first appear in the upper Eocene stratigraphic record of South America, whereas megafossils of Stenochlaena-like ferns are first known from the upper Paleocene strata of this same region. Beyond this traditional focus on taphonomic and taxonomic uncertainty regarding the identity of dispersed spore producers, however, there is further discordance between contemporary paleobotanical and molecular phylogenetic perspectives on the timing of diversification of stem lineages of blechnaceous ferns in relation to the K/Pg boundary. This investigation reconciles these two perspectives by constraining molecular clock divergence time estimates using contemporary fossil data. If this reconciliation is correct, then paleopolyploidization (whole genome duplication or WGD) associated with the origin of the genus Stenochlaena J. Sm. predated evolution of polocytic stomata, a heavily ornamented exospore, and a hemi-epiphytic to epiphytic habit observed in the crown lineage. Critically, this novel perspective elicits a merger of the K/Pg boundary fern spike and K/Pg boundary-WGD concepts, suggesting a link between polyploidy and the 'disaster taxon' concept. Volkheimerites labyrinthus gen. et sp. nov., an angiosperm pollen type, is fully described and illustrated. The specimens were retrieved from lower Paleocene strata of the Salamanca Formation (San Jorge Basin) located in Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. Medium to large size (25.5–55 μm) and a characteristic striate sculpture with labyrinthine pattern are distinguishing features of the grains in this new genus. Volkheimerites labyrinthus shares the presence of a coarse tectum supported by columellae with the fossil genera Dichastopollenites, Trisectoris and Periretisyncolpites, and some Winteraceae and Annonaceae species, but differs in having striate-labyrinthine as opposed to reticulate ornamentation. Our material is also distinguishable by the occurrence of solitary grains (monads) instead of the more frequent presence of tetrads in the Winteraceae family or grains separated into two hemispheres as in Dichastopollenites. The large thin area of the exine appears to be morphologically analogous to the proximal thinning of the exine in the monads of tetrads as occurs in some Annonaceae species. The earliest phases of mammalian recovery following the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) mass extinction are incompletely known but crucial to understanding the development of modern terrestrial ecosystems. Here we report new mammalian faunal data from three vertebrate microfossil assemblages in the Hell Creek region of northeastern Montana, the deposition of which we constrain to within the first 28–80 ka of the Paleocene using new stratigraphic observations within a high-resolution chronostratigraphic framework. We quantified the taxonomic diversity among these three assemblages and five other assemblages from both the Hell Creek region and Denver Basin, together spanning the first ca. 300 ka post-K–Pg mass extinction. Our results allowed us to sub-divide the established 'disaster' and 'recovery' phases of recovery into the following sub-phases: (i) early disaster, characterized by the presence of 'dead clades walking,' high relative abundance of bloom taxa, and the appearance of post-mass-extinction immigrants, (ii) late disaster, characterized by a reduction in the number of 'dead clades walking,' continued high relative abundance of bloom taxa, and a more diverse assemblage of immigrants, (iii) early recovery, characterized by decreased relative abundance of bloom taxa, and continued immigration, and (iv) late recovery, characterized by the onset of in situ diversification. We note important differences in the pattern and timing of mammalian faunal succession between the Hell Creek and Denver Basin, suggesting that post-K–Pg mammalian recovery was spatially heterogeneous. The study area is situated in the Meghalaya state (East Khasi Hills), North-East India. The notable petroliferous basins that were formed during the Paleogene time occurred in the state of northeast India. This work focused on characterizing the source rock of Late Paleocene (Shella Formation) of Pynursla-Lynkerdem area, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya for their hydrocarbon potential based on Rock-Eval pyrolysis and elemental data. The coals of the Pynursla-Lynkerdem area have been characterized by high total organic carbon (TOC) range between 67.2 wt% and 74.5 wt%. The remaining hydrocarbon yield (S2) ranges from 215.5 to 294.0 mg HC/g rock. S2 and TOC data plots entail that these coals contain Type II–III kerogen and can act as a good hydrocarbon source rock. The hydrogen index (HI) ranges from 311.1 to 405.7 mg HC/g TOC, which indicates most of the sample can generate gases. Tmax varies between 405 and 433 °C (less than 435 °C), revealing the immaturity of organic matter. The plot of elemental composition places these samples from sub-bituminous to high volatile bituminous in rank and furnishes these coals' suitability for gasification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reported here is the discovery of a new mammal from the middle Paleocene of the Ouled Abdoun phosphate basin, Morocco. Hadrogeneios phosphaticus, gen. et sp. nov., is described based on dental and gnathic specimens. Comparative dental anatomy and CT scan observations support stem relationships to paenungulates. The cladistic analysis relates Hadrogeneios to paenungulatomorphs, especially based on the shared morphotypic condition of a dilambdodont ectoloph linked to inflated stylar cusps. Within the Paenungulatomorpha, Hadrogeneios is plesiomorphic not only with respect to crown paenungulates, but also to Abdounodus and Ocepeia, making it the basalmost known paenungulatomorph. Hadrogeneios, on the other hand, displays a peculiarly specialized mandibular symphyseal region (mentum), which is enlarged and raised high above the cheek teeth, and bears at its apex small incisors that are innervated and vascularized by a peculiar long and thin dorsal canaliculus. This is tentatively interpreted as a plier-like dental apparatus specialized for enhanced oral gripping function of the food, with increasing grip strength or enhanced grip precision. A composite reconstruction of the lower jaw of Hadrogeneios phosphaticus, based on 3D modeling from CT scans, is provided. Hadrogeneios, Abdounodus, and Ocepeia, all from the same Ouled Abdoun Paleocene phosphate levels, are the very rare witnesses of the first evolution and diversification of the endemic African ungulates phylogenetically preceding the modern paenungulate orders. The Xolapa Complex of southern Mexico preserves evidence of its connection with the Chortís Block of Central America. Orthogneisses yielded U-Pb protolith ages from 172 to 169 Ma and paramigmatites are dated at 217 Ma. El Salitre and the Amatlán granitoids show crystallization ages of 65 and 59–57 Ma, respectively. In central Xolapa, diatexites have ages from 38 to 31 Ma, and granites were dated from 30 to 29 Ma. In the southeastern Xolapa, crystallization ages of 45 Ma and 23 to 21 Ma were obtained from migmatites and anatectic granites, respectively. Previous data indicate three diachronous stages of crustal melting along the Xolapa block. Structural data reveal that the Xolapa Complex is tectonically juxtaposed against the Acatlán Complex through ductile zones. Two mylonitic foliations are predominant in the northern boundary of the Xolapa Complex: (i) a sub-vertical NW-SE foliation with subhorizontal or low-plunging stretching lineation and left-lateral kinematics; and (ii) a subhorizontal NE-SW foliation with normal plunging stretching lineation and top-to-NE kinematics. The first mylonitic event related to the sinistral eastward motion of the Chortís Block occurred between 58 and 54–50 Ma. The second event took place in central Xolapa after or synchronous with the 38–31 Ma emplacement of diatexites. This event is related to an extensional phase that uplifts the Xolapa Complex with concerning the Acatlán Complex. In the southeastern region, deformation occurred after or synchronous with the emplacement of anatectic granites dated at 23–22 Ma. Our geochronological and structural data delineated an eastward decreasing age trend of migmatization, whereas the mylonitic deformation reported through the Xolapa Complex is consistent with a diachronous migration and detachment of the Chortís Block relative to the Acatlán Complex from Paleocene to early Miocene times. The Madtsoiidae are an extinct lineage of snakes known from the Late Cretaceous to the Late Pleistocene, with a rich fossil record distributed mainly across Gondwanan landmasses. However, only a few taxa are represented by cranial or articulated remains, and most madtsoiids are known only by isolated vertebrae. The unambiguous record of Madtsoiidae from the Cenozoic in South America had been restricted to the genus Madtsoia from Eocene and Oligocene deposits of Patagonia and Brazil. Here, we describe a new madtsoiid taxon, Powellophis andina gen. et sp. nov., based on an articulated postcranial skeleton from the Mealla Formation (middle–late Paleocene) in northwestern Argentina. The new taxon is estimated to be around 3 meters long, with a vertebral morphology sharing similar features with other mid-to-large forms. Its inclusion in a recent analysis of madtsoiid relationships recovers Powellophis as an early member of a clade formed by mostly large bodied and gigantic taxa. Its presence in the Paleocene of northwestern Argentina fills the gap between the diverse Late Cretaceous and Eocene–Oligocene records of madtsoiids in South America, confirms their presence in northern Gondwana by the early Paleogene, and expands the diversity of the group. Phelodinium fensomei is a new species of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst described from the Appian Way section of the Oyster Bay Formation, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Phelodinium fensomei sp. nov. differs from other species of Phelodinium in its unique combination of characters including an elongate epicyst, bilobate endocyst antapex, and microgranulate to verrucate surface ornamentation. The species occurs exclusively within Dinoflagellate Cyst Zone D4 of the Oyster Bay Formation along with the Danian indicator taxon Danea californica. This is also the first study to perform scanning electron microscopy and epifluorescence analysis on a specimen belonging to the protoperidinioid genus Phelodinium, revealing minute features and a negative response to ultraviolet light exposure, indicating a heterotrophic feeding strategy for the motile cell. Although P. fensomei sp. nov. occurs at markedly low relative and absolute abundances in the examined interval, it is restricted to strata of Danian age suggesting potential biostratigraphic utility. Among dinoflagellates, extant cladopyxidaceans may provide a missing link to better understand the first evolutionary transformations from ancestral configurations toward the more abundant and more derived patterns in Gonyaulacales and Peridiniales. A restudy of the extant, motile-defined Micracanthodinium setiferum using plankton samples from the Indian and Atlantic oceans and the Mediterranean Sea demonstrates that the correct plate formula is Po, Pt, X, 3′ + *4′, 4a, 7′′, 7C, 4S, ?6′′′, 0p, 2′′′′. A ventral pore is found between 1′, 3′ and *4′. A restudy of the extinct, fossil-defined Cladopyxidium saeptum from the upper Paleocene of Delaware (USA), demonstrated the presence of an identical tabulation. A ventral pore (= porichnion) was positioned between *1′ and 7′′. Cladopyxidium is morphologically closer to Micracanthodinium than to Cladopyxis. Since Cladopyxidium has been extinct since the middle Eocene, it is unlikely that Micracanthodinium and Cladopyxidium have a direct biological link; the close morphological similarity between them does, however, suggest an important phylogenetic relationship between them in the evolution of cladopyxidaceans. A fully integrated 3D basin model was built to study the lithospheric structural evolution and the thermal history of the offshore part of the Gippsland Basin to investigate the type, timing and magnitude of its initial opening mechanism and their effects on source rocks. The applied workflow included seismic interpretation of major faults and magmatic features, seismic reinterpretation of existing main stratigraphic boundaries and adjustment of the basement topography. Different scenarios for a McKenzie-type basal heat flow evolution were tested based on a two-step inversion approach, which translates the thickness changes of lithospheric layers into basal heat flow. Finally, a crustal layer model was assigned to the existing 3D numerical basin model and the effects on thermal maturation of petroleum source rocks were investigated. The results of the calibrated inversion model suggest intense lithospheric stretching and mantle upwelling during the Early Cretaceous caused initial breakup and subsidence of the Gippsland Basin. This syn-rift phase was accompanied by increasing basal heat flow from initially ∼50 mW/m2 to a maximum of 80–90 mW/m2. The resulting upwelled Moho with an associated crustal thickness of locally only 8 km agrees with geophysical observations. Elevated paleogeothermal gradients between 50 and 60 °C/km prevailed from ca 120 to 80 Ma. Episodes of compression, uplift, erosion, and thermal subsidence resulted in fast and continuous cooling during the early post-rift and a constant basal heat flow of 45–50 mW/m2 since the Eocene. Two main pulses of petroleum generation were identified in the Paleocene and in the Miocene–Pliocene. This novel two-step crustal layer inversion method allows a detailed reconstruction of the thermal history of rift basins and can provide useful information about the maturation of petroleum source rocks. A temperature history reconstruction of the Gippsland Basin is given based on a large-scale numerical 3D model. Tectonically induced strong variability in paleoheat flows is recognised. Xenarthra are an endemic and relictual clade of Placentalia that played an important role in the biodiversity during the Cenozoic in today South America. Fossil forms representing close to 200 genera have been identified, both Pilosa and Cingulata, during its long evolutionary history (late Paleocene/early Eocene–Recent). However, there is an evident imbalance in what concerns the knowledge of the xenarthrans of southern South America compared with those of middle and low latitudes, of which little is known, despite the fact that in recent times the studies of these latter have been greatly improved. New remains of Xenarthra (Folivora Mylodontinae gen. et sp. indet. and Cingulata Glyptodontidae gen. et sp. indet.) from the Letrero Formation, upper Miocene (ca. 11–9 Ma, Tortonian) of southern Ecuador are here reported and described. The only previous record from this formation belongs to the Cingulata Dasypodidae Anadasypus aequatorianus. Our comparative study reveals several morphological differences compared with other known Miocene specimens, especially those of La Venta (Colombia), Anzoátegui and Urumaco (Venezuela), and the Patagonian region (Argentina). These morphological differences suggest that these remains could belong to new taxa, and highlight the fact that, despite the relative proximity, both chronological and geographic, of the middle Miocene of La Venta (Colombia, ca. 13–11 Ma, Serravallian to Tortonian), the Xenarthra registered in Ecuador are morphologically distant, suggesting some isolation of this putative endemic paleofauna.
