The 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake triggered simultaneous turbidity currents down ten submarine canyons along a 200 km stretch of the continental slope, east of New Zealand. Some discharged into the Hikurangi Channel which flows >1500 km northwards along the abyssal trench floor. To better understand provenance continuity in deep-sea sedimentary records, foraminiferal samples from the 2016 turbidites from 17 canyon and channel cores were used to investigate the source histories of these submarine gravity flows. Cluster analyses suggest the canyon provenances for most 2016 turbidite faunas should be determinable using a combination of the relative abundance of key benthic genera, planktic foraminiferal index (dissolution), absolute test abundance and planktic % of the foraminiferal faunas. Two ordinations (PCA, PCO) based on these parameters were used to infer provenance and flow history. One hundred kilometres down the Hikurangi Channel, faunas in the 2016 turbidite confirm a Kaikōura Canyon source. Further downstream, 200–500 km north of the confluence with Campbell, Cook and Opouawe canyons, faunas indicate that the 2016 turbidite in the northern Hikurangi Channel is a composite deposit, from an initial Opouawe-Cook canyon-sourced turbidity current over-ridden and partly mixed with, a Kaikōura Canyon-sourced flow that arrived sometime later. Glacio-eustatic cycles lead to changes in sedimentation on all types of continental margins. There is, however, a paucity of sedimentation rate data over eustatic sea-level cycles in active subduction zones. During International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 375, coring of the upper ∼110 m of the northern Hikurangi Trough Site U1520 recovered a turbidite-dominated succession deposited during the last ∼45 kyrs (Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 1–3). We present an age model integrating radiocarbon dates, tephrochronology, and δ18O stratigraphy, to evaluate the bed recurrence interval (RI) and sediment accumulation rate (SAR). Our analyses indicate mean bed RI varies from ∼322 yrs in MIS1, ∼49 yrs in MIS2, and ∼231 yrs in MIS3. Large (6-fold) and abrupt variations in SAR are recorded across MIS transitions, with rates of up to ∼10 m/kyr occurring during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and <1 m/kyr during MIS1 and 3. The pronounced variability in SAR, with extremely high rates during the LGM, even for a subduction zone, are the result of changes in regional sediment supply associated with climate-driven changes in terrestrial catchment erosion, and critical thresholds of eustatic sea-level change altering the degree of sediment bypassing the continental shelf and slope via submarine canyon systems. Parilia alcocki is a deep-sea crab inhabiting the continental shelves and slopes of the eastern Arabian Sea and western Bay of Bengal at a depth of 128–457 m. No published information is available on its population characteristics and sexual dimorphism. The present study provides the first-ever insight into the population differentiation and sexual dimorphism in P. alcocki using Geometric Morphometric Analysis (GMA) of carapace and chela shapes. The Arabian Sea population possessed carapaces with a more pointed anterior and a rounded posterior margin as compared with the Bay of Bengal population. When chela shapes are compared, the Arabian Sea crabs possess an elongated, narrower arm, and shorter pollex. The observed shape variations could be attributed to heterogeneous habitat conditions in these regions which influence feeding and predation. Sexual dimorphism in carapace shapes was indiscernible. However, males exhibited wider intra-specific variations in carapace shape and show a larger average and maximum size for linear carapace measurements. Also, male crabs possess elongated and narrow arms and shorter pollex, whereas the females have a broader and shorter arm and longer pollex, indicative of classical sexual size dimorphism. Reducing multiple contaminations in reflection seismic data remains one of the primary challenges in marine seismic data processing. Besides geological settings, its effectiveness is also dependent on the multiple removal methods. In this study, we undertook two legacy 2D multi-channel seismic data crossing the accretionary wedge off SW Taiwan to test the efficiency of various multiple-attenuation scenarios. The tectonic domain has resulted from the incipient arc-continent collision between the northern rifted margin of the South China Sea and the Luzon volcanic arc. The wedge extends from shallow water to deep water bathymetries, hence promoting both short-period and long-period multiples within the seismic records. A cascade of de-multiple methods was tested to attenuate multiple energy under various seafloor bathymetry and tectonic areas. The first step relies on the periodicity nature of multiples. Spatial dependent predictive deconvolution in the x-t domain was performed to attenuate reverberations and improve temporal resolution in the time domain. Wave-equation multiple attenuation (WEMA) was applied to suppress the water layer multiples based on a combination of numerical wave extrapolation in the shot domain through water layer and water bottom reflectivity. Surface-related multiple elimination (SRME) aimed to attenuate the residual water bottom multiple and peg-leg multiple by assuming surface-related multiples can be kinematically predicted via convolution of pre-stack seismic traces at possible surface multiple reflection locations. The second step exploits the spatial move-out difference behavior between primaries and multiples. Parabolic Radon transforms far-offset multiples by subtracting noise energy in the τ-p domain, whereas the frequency-wave number (F-K) filter aimed to eliminate any residual multiples energy in the F-K domain. Predictive deconvolution improved seismic resolution and suppressed sea-bottom reverberation energy in the continental and lower wedge slopes, but not in the upper wedge slope. WEMA, Radon filter, and F-K filter reduced multiples energy both at the continental slope and wedge slope; whereas SRME made minimal impact on both areas. Since the reflection seismic datasets stretch diverse tectonic environments and water depth, there was no single multiple attenuation method capable to suppress multiples in all tectonic environments and bathymetry. Enclosed depressions, termed pockmarks, are widespread seafloor morphologies, commonly associated with fluid seepage. This study provides the first detailed documentation of pockmarks offshore the South Westland margin of the South Island/Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa New Zealand. Pockmarks are identified from multibeam bathymetry (25-m grid) through manual and semi-automated selection in water depths of 100–2600 m. Pockmarks are most concentrated at 400–850 m water depth on continental slope areas between submarine canyons. A continuum of pockmark morphologies includes – (1) large (>0.5 km2 area) and irregularly shaped pockmarks above partially infilled channels; (2) small and circular pockmarks (∼100–200 m diameter; ∼0.008–0.03 km2 area) occurring between canyons; and (3) elongated and intermediate size pockmarks, generally oriented along-slope and often occurring above buried sediment waves. Elongated pockmarks appear to have been modified by near-seafloor oceanographic and/or turbidity current flows. Pockmark features occur across many locations around Aotearoa, including both the eastern and western margins. Some similar pockmark morphologies are identified in these different tectonic, sedimentary, and oceanographic settings, suggesting that there may be some similarity in formative mechanisms, but clear mechanisms leading to their formation remain enigmatic. The morphology and development of several submarine canyons offshore southeast South Australia and western Victoria are described. The existence of three of those canyons had been foreshadowed in 1963 by N. Boutakoff, who thought them to be linked to ancient courses of the Glenelg River. These canyons occur on the outer continental shelf where their heads are situated in depths shallower than 1000 m. Sinuous channels are visible within two of the canyon heads, indicating that water and sediment may still travel downslope and cause erosion, and thus are geologically recent. Several other canyons are also documented and named. Two canyons are confined to depths below 3000 m; they may be much older and seem not to be linked to ancient river courses. They are also oblique to the upper canyons. The other characteristic feature of the area is the presence of numerous undersea slides. These occur at three specific depths (∼1200, ∼1500 and ∼1800 m) and are coincident with stratigraphic horizons in which continental groundwater flows have been identified in adjacent exploratory oil and gas wells drilled into the continental shelf. Sapping of groundwater may likely have occurred during very wet periods inland. We suggest that these undersea slides could be the first step in the formation of deep-sea canyons that are not necessarily linked to ancient river courses. We also postulate that the 'sliding' of large piles of sediment down the continental slope has tsunamigenic potential and may have occurred during significant wet climate on land. Several deep-sea canyons and numerous submarine slides are documented along the continental shelf offshore the coastline of western Victoria and southeast South Australia in the Otway Basin. Some of these canyons are linked to previous courses of the Glenelg River, which changed over time in response to regional tectonic changes such as faulting and significant upwarping. The orientation of most of these canyons tends to align with ancient terrestrial lineaments that likely extend offshore. Sinuous channels within the upper canyon reaches are clearly visible and not infilled with sediment; they are likely active and linked to ongoing groundwater seepage. It is proposed that the underwater slides are generated by the submarine discharge of continental groundwater on the continental slope, at three specific water depths with discharge associated with particular lithologies. NASA's Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP), Visible Infra-red Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data utilized to detect night time lights (NTL) radiances and fishing boat pixels using VIIRS boat detection (VBD) approach. Study attempted for first time in Indian waters to detect night time fishing boats during 2017 along with chlorophyll and sea surface temperature (SST). Night-time fishing observed higher in Arabian Sea (AS) compared to Bay of Bengal (BoB). The reason likely the shallower bathymetry (50–200meters) of AS, broader continental shelf and more biological productivity, compared to BoB's narrow and steep continental slope and less productive water. AS night time fishery observed season-dependent (December–May) with VBD pixels ranging 100–300, wherein BoB distribution is sparse, <30 VBD pixels. In AS, moderate/high chlorophyll (0.2–1.2 mgm−3), moderate SST (27–30.5 °C) and non-cloudy months observed suitable for night time fishing. In BoB, moderate chlorophyll (0.2-0.45 mgm−3) and moderate SST (27-30.5 °C) played positive role for night light fishing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Design criteria, and risk evaluation for marine structures, over continental shelf and slope might be affected by currents associated with internal waves. The derivation of design criteria requires long time series of currents at very high sampling rates commonly not available. Therefore, methodologies to derive those time series are required. In this paper, an approach based on numerical modelling is proposed as a proof-of-concept. The Sulu Sea was selected to test the capability of the model to simulate those currents. Model results were compared to data available in the literature. Curvilinear depressions and chains of asymmetrical to circular pits up to a few meters deep and a few tens of meters wide have been mapped on the upper continental slope beyond the mid-Norwegian shelf. These features are interpreted to represent a continuum of seafloor landforms produced by the grounding of iceberg keels at successive low tides. The features occur along a 50 km long stretch of the upper slope in modern water depths between 400 and 500 m. The average distance between pits varies between about 70 and 175 m, representing one tidal cycle of 12 hr 25 min between successive low tides. This yields average iceberg drift velocities of between 5 and 15 m hr-1. The pits are often asymmetrical, with a downstream surcharge or berm, making it possible to determine the direction of iceberg drift and, therefore, the current direction at the time of ploughmark formation. The c. 300 m thick icebergs producing the ploughmarks are likely to have been sourced mainly from the fast-flowing Norwegian Channel Ice Stream to the south and probably formed during the early part of regional deglaciation of the Norwegian shelf after the Last Glacial Maximum around 20,000 years ago. From the BIOPEARL 1 and 2 Programs to the Amundsen and Scotia Seas a large series of Tanaidacea was collected using an epibenthic sled. We carried out a thorough morphological analysis of 169 individuals and provide a description of 14 pseudotanaid species distributed in three genera. Twelve species of the genus Pseudotanais are represented by three morphogroups: "affinis+longisetosus", "denticulatus+abathagastor", and "forcipatus". We provide a redescription of Akanthinotanais gaussi, supplement the definitions of the genera Akanthinotanais and Beksitanais, and transfer Pseudotanais abyssi to the genus Beksitanais. Based on the literature and new data, we summarize knowledge of the Antarctic Pseudotanaidae and discuss this family's spatial and bathymetric distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present geomorphological hazard mapping of the San Vito Peninsula offshore (Sicilian margin of Tyrrhenian Sea), characterised by a very narrow continental shelf and a very dipping, tectonically active continental slope, no far from a seismogenic belt. The data set consists of morpho-bathymetric models achieved by means of multibeam survey and scattered high resolution seismic profiles. The morpho-bathymetric study highlighted some potential sites of geomorphological hazards, the most representative of which are: (i) two canyons developing from the upper slope off San Vito Cape down to the Erice basin; (ii) a dense network of small incisions across the upper slope; (iii) a very active landslide, developed onland and extending in the continental shelf close to the Scopello village. The geomorphological features that can generate submarine hazard are represented by: unstable sediment packages into canyon heads or along the upper slope; submarine canyons with regressive erosion; coastal landslides.
