AbstractFusarium graminearum is the most important pathogen of maize and winter wheat in Canada, resulting in yield loss and mycotoxin contamination. Fungicides are essential to manage F. graminearum in cereal crops. Until pydiflumetofen became commercial, the only available fungicides were triazoles, limiting the potential to manage fungicide resistance. Fusarium graminearum isolates were surveyed from wheat, grain maize and overwintering maize stalks in southern Ontario. Chemotype and the baseline sensitivity to pydiflumetofen were determined in addition to sensitivity to common fungicides used to control F. graminearum. Fusarium graminearum has several strains producing different trichothecenes called chemotypes. In Ontario, 73.3% of the F. graminearum isolates were 3ANX chemotypes producing 7α-hydroxy, 15-deacetylcalonectrin, in addition to 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol and deoxynivalenol; the remaining isolates were 15ADON chemotypes producing only 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol and deoxynivalenol. Chemotype was not affected by isolate source (wheat grain, maize grain, maize stalks) nor by location. All isolates were sensitive to pydiflumetofen and fungicide products containing pydiflumetofen. The mean EC50 for isolates exposed to pydiflumetofen was 0.05 µg mL−1 (range 0.01–0.10 µg mL−1). The mean EC50 for isolates exposed to Miravis®Ace (containing pydiflumetofen and propiconazole), Miravis®Neo 300SE (containing pydiflumetofen, azoxystrobin and propiconazole), Caramba® (containing metconazole), Proline® (containing prothioconazole) and Prosaro (containing prothioconazole and tebuconazole) was 0.06, 0.13, 0.18, 0.05, 3.75 and 0.30 µg mL−1, respectively. Plant diseases are a significant threat to global food security since they directly affect the quality of crops, leading to a decline in agricultural productivity. Several researchers have employed crop-specific deep learning models based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) to identify plant diseases with better accuracy and faster implementation. However, the use of crop-specific models is unreasonable considering the resource-constrained devices and digital literacy rate of farmers. This work proposes a single light-weight CNN model for disease identification in three major crops, namely, Corn, Rice, and Wheat. The proposed model uses convolution layers of variable sizes at the same level to accurately detect the diseases with various sizes of the infected area. The experimentation results reveal that the proposed model outperforms several benchmark CNN models, namely, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet152, ResNet50V2, ResNet152V2, MobileNetV2, DenseNet121, DenseNet201, InceptionV3, and Xception, to achieve an accuracy of 84.4% while using just 387,340 parameters. Moreover, the proposed model validates its efficacy as a multi-functional tool by classifying healthy and infected categories of each crop individually, obtaining accuracies of 99.74%, 82.67%, and 97.5% for Corn, Rice, and Wheat, respectively. The better performance values and light-weight nature of the proposed model make it a viable choice for real-time crop disease detection, even in resource-constrained environments. There is a growing interest in developing agricultural practices that can improve crop performance while preserving natural resources. Plant biostimulants are thought to play a role in reaching this goal, in particular by increasing the nitrogen use efficiency. However, a notable research gap exists concerning the effects of foliar applications of natural zeolites as plant biostimulants on crop performance. To address this knowledge gap, a greenhouse experiment was set up in order to study the response of maize and wheat traits, specifically the biomass productivity and nitrogen uptake, as well as the response of soil extracellular enzymes to the foliar applications of a natural zeolite in combination with different levels of nitrogen fertilization, that is, 100%, 75%, and 50% of the optimal dose. Foliar application of zeolite in wheat and maize plants led to an increase in root nitrogen concentration of about 10%, particularly at the lowest nitrogen fertilization rate. This response was accompanied by an increase in aboveground to belowground uptake nitrogen ratio. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction of about 20% in root biomass in both crops with zeolite application across the entire nitrogen fertilization gradient. These plant-level responses were associated with a significant increase in the activity of carbon-degrading and nitrogen-degrading enzymes at the soil level in response to zeolite applications. Our findings provide a compelling proof-of-concept for the beneficial effects of foliar-applied zeolite as a biostimulant for crops, emphasizing the critical need for additional field research to validate our greenhouse results. Crop rotations with residue incorporation can be beneficial to the sustainability of agriculture, however as long-term studies are required to determine effects on soil properties, farmers usually don't practice crop rotations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of crop rotations with residue incorporation (0%, 50%, 100%, and 200%) on soil chemical properties of a volcanic soil after 4 years of cultivation. The evaluated rotations were canola (Brassica napus L.)-bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), canola-durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.), canola-corn (Zea mays L.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)-bread wheat, bean-durum wheat, and bean-corn. The experiment consisted of six crop rotations, four levels of residue incorporation, and four replicates, analyzed as split-plot design. Samples were taken from the topsoil, and the following soil chemical properties were evaluated: pH, organic matter, electrical conductivity, nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), aluminum (Al), and sulfur (S). The results showed that crop rotations affected all the chemical properties evaluated, whereas the level of residue incorporation only affected the concentrations of exchangeable Mg and K. Most of the evaluated crops rotations had beneficial effects on the soil properties. The canola-durum wheat crop rotation recorded the lowest values in OM, available N and the exchangeable Ca, Mg, and Na. Exchangeable Mg and K had a directly proportional relationship with the level of residue incorporation. In conclusion, the incorporation of residues in different doses during 4 years of crop rotation in this volcanic soil had little effect on its chemical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate the impact of training on the use of modern agricultural inputs in comparison to the recommended amount for wheat and maize production in Gozamin and Machakil Woredas in Northwest Ethiopia. The study employs a mixed-methods research design. The propensity score matching and thematic methods of analysis were used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. The study finds that trainees reduced the excess application of wheat seed by 11.66% to 15% ha-1. In Machakil, they tended to reduce excess NPSB application by 21% and increase urea by 52.17% for wheat. But, the NPSB rate was found to increase by 100.4% above the recommended rate in Gozamin. For maize, the trainees increased urea by 12.42% ha-1 in both Woredas. The study recommends the provision of consecutive practical training and demonstrations till farmers get convinced that applying the recommended rates of inputs significantly enhances crop productivity. Although accurate forecasting of the production of major cereal crops is important to make policy decisions related to their supply, demand and import/export, very little work has been done in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to develop the best performing trend models for area, production, and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), teff [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter], and maize (Zea mays L.) in Ethiopia, and to provide forecasts for 2019 to 2023. For each crop, the best-performing model was selected among linear, quadratic, exponential growth, and S-curve trend models using five performance measures (mean absolute percent error [MAPE], mean absolute deviation [MAD], mean squared deviation [MSD], coefficient of efficiency [E], and index of agreement [d]). Quadratic trend model was the best for area of wheat and teff, production of wheat, teff, and maize, and wheat and maize yields. S-curve and Linear trend models were the best for area of maize and yield of teff, respectively. Forecasts for 2019 to 2023 using the best-performing model revealed that cultivated area for these three cereals will decrease by 3,581 ha in Ethiopia, but their combined total production will increase by 4,896,630 tons, and productivity of wheat, teff, and maize will increase by 20.3%, 13.2%, and 13.8%, respectively, which is slightly higher than the projected population growth (10.9%) during this time. Although these results indicate that Ethiopia is on track to meet the second SDG, government policymakers and other stakeholders can use these findings to ensure sustainable food and nutrition security in Ethiopia. This study investigated uptake of two organic compounds including hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and exogenous caffeine by tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), corn (Zea mays L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The plants were grown in a growth chamber under recommended conditions and then were exposed to these compounds for 19 days. The uptake of the compounds was measured by sap concentration factor. The plant samples (stem transpiration stream) and solution in the exposure media were taken and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The plant stem samples were analyzed after a freeze-thaw centrifugation process. The average sap concentration factor for the RDX by tomato, wheat, and corn was 0.71, 0.67, and 0.65. The average sap concentration factor for the exogenous caffeine by tomato, wheat, and corn was 0.72, 0.50, and 0.34. These relatively high sap concentration factor values were expected as available predictive models offer high sap concentration factor values for moderately hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds. The generated sap concentration factor values for the RDX and exogenous caffeine are important for improving the accuracy of previously developed machine learning models predicting the uptake and translocation of emerging contaminants. The uptake of two organic compounds (RDX and exogenous caffeine) was examined in three crop plants (corn, wheat, and tomato). There have not been any uptake studies on exogenous caffeine and also we do not have good data for the uptake of RDX by these three crop plants. The estimated sap concentration factor from these experiments fills the gap in the data for developing predictive models for uptake of emerging contaminants. Foliar fertilization is an important agricultural practice. How crop plants considerably response to small amounts of foliar-applied minerals is not fully understood. In this study, we tested whether foliar-applied potassium (K) stimulates soil K uptake by plant roots. Firstly, K uptake from nutrient solution by wheat seedling was investigated with and without foliar application of K. To dissect net K uptake, quantified amount of foliar-applied K (∼19.2 mg pot−1), and K uptake by non-foliar-fertilized plants was subtracted from whole plant K uptake (foliar-treated). In the second set of experiment, maize was grown in soil, and 2% K2SO4 (∼45.4 mg K pot−1) was foliar-applied to dissect soil indigenous K uptake. In addition to elevated K level in both crops, the net K uptake via wheat and maize roots quantified ∼23% and 55%, respectively higher with foliar application of K. It is coupled with improving phenotypic observations, comprising root biomass (32–56%), root-to-shoot ratios (7–38%), and water contents (13–15%) by plotting multivariate analysis. Further, the elevated leaf gas exchange measurements and chlorophyll contents by 10% in wheat and 14% in maize ensured the optimum photosynthetic activity in foliar-applied seedlings. Notably, after crop harvesting, ∼10% lower biological available K in the soil of foliar-applied maize was found. In sum, our findings provide scientific basis that foliar K fertilization improves soil K uptake by wheat, maize, and probably, closely related to cereal crops. High temperature inhibits the growth and development of maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. The current study attempts to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of exogenous trehalose for the improvement of maize and wheat responses to heat stress. Results show that, in maize seedlings, exogenously-supplied trehalose was able to effectively elevate the capacity of photosynthetic carbon assimilation and improve the carbohydrate content via up-regulating the transcript levels of key enzymes including phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), NADP-malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH), NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME), pyruvate phosphate dikinase (PPDK) and Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase small subunit. Besides, it was also able to improve C4 pathway enzyme activities, including PEPC, NADP-MDH, NADP-ME and Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RUBPCase). In wheat seedlings, exogenously-supplied trehalose promoted photosynthetic carbon assimilation by elevating the activity of RUBPCase. These results show that exogenous trehalose improved photosynthetic carbon assimilation capacities in maize and wheat seedlings under heat stress through different mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to examine the reduction of Zearalenone (ZEA) in grains by using gamma radiation (γ- ray) to minimise exposure hazards and of economic and health consequence. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 samples of food grains (wheat, yellow corn, and white corn) were collected from Egyptian retail markets from five governorates (Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Qena and Gharbia) to determine the ZEA contamination levels by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To study reduction by γ- ray, twelve uncontaminated samples were spiked with ZEA at the maximum permitted limit (100 µg/kg) and irradiated with different energies of γ-rays (5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy), and then the reduction rates were evaluated. Results: Only two samples out of 150 randomly collected samples were found to be contaminated with ZEA. In the case of the effect of γ-rays on grain ZEA contents, the reduction in ZEA ranged between 49.0 ± 4.7 and 97.0 ± 1.5% in wheat samples, and between 24.8 ± 4.1 and 51.1 ± 3.5% in yellow corn samples, between 20.3 and 59.9% in white corn samples. Finally, at 20 kGy, the reductions were 97.0 ± 1.5, 51.1 ± 3.5 and 59.9 ± 3.2% in wheat, yellow corn and white corn, respectively. Conclusions: ZEA was more easily degraded in wheat than in yellow corn and white corn. Moisture content played a vital role in ZEA degradation. γ- Ray exposure was used as an effective method to reduce ZEA in wheat, yellow corn and white corn. The reduction rate increased relative to the irradiation dose. Further study is recommended to determine the reduction yields and toxicities of ZEA that may be achieved post γ- ray radiation. Crop rotations and residue management contribute to the sustainability of the soil and environment and reduction of fertiliser use. However, appropriate crop and residue level combinations have yet to be determined to maximise productivity, while ensuring the preservation of soil resources in different agricultural production systems. The experiment evaluated production and soil chemical properties in bean after three preceding crops (bread wheat, durum wheat, and corn) with four residue incorporation levels (0%, 50%, 100%, and 200%) under irrigation conditions in volcanic soil in south-central Chile. A split plot design with four replicates was used. Results indicated that the production of grain and crop residue of bean were higher after corn and durum wheat. The preceding crop also affected some soil chemical properties, especially after the corn crop. The production parameters were not affected by the different residue levels; these had a positive effect on the concentrations of N, K, and Mg and an effect that was directly proportional to the residue level being used. Correlations between soil chemical properties were also established, consistently highlighting the increase in the concentration of the nutrients N, K, Ca, and Mg associated with increases in organic matter content. This study reports the development and validation of a simple, yet efficient method called the ultra-fast reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence and photodiode array detector (UF-RP-HPLC-FD-DAD) to extract and quantify the total aflatoxin from grains and poultry feed. The proposed method is used to determine the total aflatoxin content in 150 samples of maize, rice, wheat, peanut and poultry feed obtained from open markets in a state in Nigeria. The extent of consumer exposure to aflatoxins and the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are evaluated. The UF-RP-HPLC-FD-DAD method was found to be satisfactorily accurate, sensitive and reliable as ascertained by its excellent validation outcomes (R2 > 0.999, LoD < 0.08 ng g−1, LoQ < 0.2 ng g−1, recovery = 90–102%). The aflatoxin levels in food grains and poultry feed samples obtained in this study implied a moderate dietary exposure of between 10.67 and 20.77 ng/kg BW/day, in which the risk of developing HCC was estimated to be between 6.27 and 21.40% per 100,000 adults/year. Hence, greater monitoring of marketed food and feed is required, besides the deployment of strict controls and preventive techniques to minimize the population's exposure to a high dietary level of aflatoxins. Dietary intake is a major route of exposure to perfluorinated compounds. In the case of exposure to these compounds by nutrition, the consumption of agricultural products is one of the most important places. Biological wastes are converted into composts and are often used for fertiliser purposes to prevent spreading of waste to large areas. These practices cause agricultural areas to be contaminated with perfluorinated compounds and to first pass on to the plants growing on these soils and then to animals and infestations through the food chain. In this study, firstly, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulphonic acid (PFOS) levels were determined in five different composts. Mean PFOA and PFOS concentrations were between 26.1–102.0 ng g−1 and 0.211–0.649 ng g−1, respectively. After sowing wheat and corn, compost was applied. The amount of PFOA and PFOS that passed to the stalks, leaves, and grains of wheat and corn was determined. Obtained results showed that the total perfluorinated compounds migration decreased as follows: stalk>leaf>grain. Furthermore, the effects of PFOA and PFOS on chlorophyll concentration and soluble protein were examined. The bioconcentration factors and two methods for estimating the bioavailable fraction of Cd and Zn were evaluated to their concentrations in young silage maize under different phosphate and crop management. The DGT technique and the extraction method with NH4NO3 indicated a moderate correlation to Cd levels in maize. After the first crop rotation, Cd bioavailability increased under high-banded P fertilization, indicating a potential accumulation of labile Cd in arable soil in a short period of time. This effect was not visible in the Cd uptake by the following maize crop. P placement strongly affected Zn concentration in maize. A previous legume crop enhanced Cd bioavailability and Cd uptake compared with a wheat crop rotation. Particular attention should be paid to interactions between essential and toxic elements (P, Zn, and Cd), P overfertilization, and high Cd contents in P fertilizers even in the short term to prevent accumulation of labile Cd in soil-maize systems. Lime (L) and phosphogypsum (GY) are indispensable inputs in acidic soils that can alter the nutritional status of crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and productivity of maize and wheat after the application of L and GY. The treatments consisted of a 2 x 4 + 3 factorial, with two forms of L application: surface (SL) and incorporated (IL) to obtain different levels of base saturation (BS%): 44, 60, 70 and 90; additionally three treatments involving the use of GY were evaluated: BS% 60 + 3.71 Mg ha−1; BS% 70 + 3.71 Mg ha−1 and BS% 70 + 7.42 Mg ha−1 of GY. The increase in BS% favored the absorption of magnesium (Mg) (SL and IL) and phosphorus (P) (IL) content in maize. IL increased the contents of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) and maize yield compared with SL. GY increased the maize yield by 7.6% compared with the control (BS 44%). Maize productivity correlated positively with calcium (Ca) (0.65), S (0.78) and N (0.54) leaf contents. In wheat, the increase in BS% reduced absorption of potassium (K) (SL and IL) and increased leaf Ca and Mg (IL) contents. Wheat yield correlated positively to leaf Ca (0.61) and S (0.62). Lime incorporation decreased wheat yield. High doses of GY (7.42 Mg ha−1) reduced absorption of Mg (maize and wheat) and K (maize). The effect of Foeniculi aetheroleum essential oil (EO) on growth performance, nutrient utilisation, serum biochemistry, immune response, ileum morphology, microbial population and meat quality of broiler chickens fed a corn- or wheat-based diet were determined. 2. A total of 360 broiler chickens were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial assay in a completely randomised design with six replicates and 15 birds per experimental unit. Birds were fed corn- or wheat-based diets supplemented with (200 mg/kg) or without fennel EO. 3. Birds fed wheat-based diets had lower BWG and FCR during grower period and lower FI during finisher period as compared to those fed corn-based diet (P < 0.05) whereas addition of fennel EO decreased chickens BWG during finisher period and EPEF, both in wheat or in corn-based diets. Dietary treatments had no effect on serum glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, AST, ALT, ALP, and MDA concentrations (P < 0.05). 4. Antibody titres against avian influenza and sheep red blood cell antibody titres, crude protein and crude fat utilisation, villus height, crypt depth and epithelium thickness were not influenced by dietary treatments (P > 0.05). Inclusion of Fennel EO to the corn-based diet resulted in greater villus width and villus surface area while it reduced lamina propria thickness (P < 0.05). Fennel EO reduced ileal E. coli and Lactobacillus spp. populations (P < 0.05). Dietary treatments had no significant effect on meat pH, cooking loss, drip loss, crude protein, crude fat content and cholesterol concentration of breast and thigh meat, total phenolic and MDA concentrations, and breast meat sensory parameters (P > 0.05). 5. These results showed that addition of fennel EO to wheat-based diets had a negative effect on chicken growth performance variables and decreased gut E. coli populations. Conservation agriculture using crop rotations and residue management is increasingly accepted in conventional agricultural systems. However, the effects on crop productivity and soil properties of different rotations, levels of use, and residue management have yet to be fully understood. Our study considered the effect of three previous crops (bread wheat, durum wheat, and corn) and four levels of residue incorporation (0%, 50%, 100%, and 200%) in a split plot design with four replicates on canola production parameters and soil chemical properties at the end of this crop. Production parameters and soil chemical properties were mostly affected by the previous crop and less by the residue incorporation rates under the conditions of this experiment; however, neither of these factors affected grain yield (ranging from 4.0 to 4.8 Mg ha−1). Canola residue production was higher (9.7%) after the corn crop, regardless of the residue incorporation rate, but the harvest index was lower after this crop. Most of the soil chemical properties were also affected, revealing increased organic matter and exchangeable K when the previous crop was corn and decreased concentrations of the cations with basic reaction when the previous crop was durum wheat.
