Nucleotide sugars (NS) fulfil important roles in all living organisms and in humans, related defects result in severe clinical syndromes. NS can be seen as the "activated" sugars used for biosynthesis of a wide range of glycoconjugates and serve as substrates themselves for the synthesis of other nucleotide sugars. NS analysis is complicated by the presence of multiple stereoisomers without diagnostic transition ions, therefore requiring separation by liquid chromatography. In this paper, we explored weak anion-exchange/reversed-phase chromatography on a hybrid column for the separation of 17 nucleotide sugars that can occur in humans. A robust and reproducible method was established with intra- and inter-day coefficients of variation below 10% and a linear range spanning three orders of magnitude. Application to patient fibroblasts with genetic defects in mannose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase beta, CDP-L-ribitol pyrophosphorylase A, and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase showed abnormal levels of guanosine-5'-diphosphate-α-D-mannose (GDP-Man), cytidine-5'-diphosphate-L-ribitol (CDP-ribitol), and cytidine-5'-monophosphate-N-acetyl-β-D-neuraminic acid (CMP-Neu5Ac), respectively, in consonance with expectations based on the diagnosis. In this paper, a magnetic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was constructed, and the influence rule of magnetic particle dosing performance of denitrification was investigated. The diversity, structure, and potential functions of the microbial community were comprehensively explored. The results showed that the particle size and the dosage of Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles were the main parameters affecting the sedimentation performance of activated sludge. The start-up phase of the SBR reactor with Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles was 5 days less than the control. Moreover, total nitrogen removal efficiency during the start-up phase was improved, with the maximum value reaching 91.93%, surpassing the control by 9.7% with the Fe 3 O 4 dosage of 1.2 g L -1 . In addition, the activated sludge concentration and dehydrogenase activity were improved, compared to the control. High-throughput sequencing showed that the denitrifying bacterium Saccharimonadales dominated the reactor and was enriched by magnetic particles. According to predicted functions, the abundance of genes for denitrification increased with the addition of magnetic particles, suggesting the capacity of nitrogen removal was enhanced in the microbial community. Purpose: In brain development, Myelination is the characteristic feature of white matter maturation, which plays an important role in efficient information transmitting. The white matter abnormality has been reported to be associated with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS). This study aimed to detect the altered white matter region in the SeLECTS patients by the combination of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) technique., Methods: 27 children with SeLECTS and 23 age- and gender-matched healthy children were enrolled. All participants were scanned with 3.0-T MRI to acquire the structure, diffusion and susceptibility-weighted data. The susceptibility and diffusion weighted data were processed to obtain quantitative susceptibility map and fraction anisotropy (FA) map. Then voxel-wise tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were used to analyze quantitative susceptibility and FA data., Results: Both DTI and QSM revealed extensive white matter alterations in the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes in SeLECTS patients. The overlapped region of DTI and QSM analyses was located in the fiber tracts of the corona radiata. The FA values in this overlapped region were negatively correlated with the magnetic susceptibility values., Conclusion: Our results suggest that TBSS-based QSM can be employed as a novel approach for characterizing alterations in white matter in SeLECTS. And the combination of QSM and DTI can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of white matter integrity by utilizing different biophysical features., (© 2024. To overcome the limitations of current methods for diagnosing paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), it is critical to develop novel diagnostic strategies that can be implemented in low-resource settings and dramatically improve turnaround times. This study focused on the development of a portable molecular test to screen for Paracoccidioides spp. The proposed approach integrated double-tagging polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a paper-based lateral flow assay (LFA) for readout, using carbon nanoparticles as a signal generation system. Primers tagged with biotin and digoxigenin were employed to conduct the double-tagging PCR, which can be conveniently carried out on portable thermocyclers. This method can generate billions of tagged DNA copies from a single target molecule, which can be rapidly detected by the LFA platform, providing results within minutes. Avidin-modified carbon nanoparticles served as a signal generation system, enabling detection in the immunochromatographic assay. The LFA demonstrated the capability to detect double-tagged amplicons as low as 0.21 ng or 0.10 ng, depending on whether the results were assessed visually or with a smartphone equipped with an image processor. These findings suggest that the proposed approach holds great promise as a point-of-care diagnostic tool for the early and accurate detection of PCM in low-resource settings. The diagnostic test is rapid and inexpensive, requires minimal handling and can be easily introduced into the general practitioner's armoury for ambulatory screening of infection. Prototyping analytical devices with three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques is becoming common in research laboratories. The attractiveness is associated with printers' price reduction and the possibility of creating customized objects that could form complete analytical systems. Even though 3D printing enables the rapid fabrication of electrochemical sensors, its wider adoption by research laboratories is hindered by the lack of reference material and the high "entry barrier" to the field, manifested by the need to learn how to use 3D design software and operate the printers. This review article provides insights into fused deposition modeling 3D printing, discussing key challenges in producing electrochemical sensors using currently available extrusion tools, which include desktop 3D printers and 3D printing pens. Further, we discuss the electrode processing steps, including designing, printing conditions, and post-treatment steps. The most significant source of human exposure to ionizing radiation is the radioactive gas radon (basically 222 Rn) and its daughter decay products, creating more than half of the effective dose from all natural sources. Radon enters buildings mainly from dense rocks, which are below building foundations at depths of 1 m and more. In this paper long-term measurements of radon flux density are analyzed, with radon exhalation from the surface of the most common rocks-loams, sandy loams, clays, clay shales, several types of sandy-gravel-pebble deposits, clay and rocky limestone. The influence of geophysical properties of rocks on radon flux density due to exhalation from surfaces of those rocks was studied. Based on the results obtained, a method of local assessment of the hazard from radon and its progeny in buildings is proposed, which is based on the geophysical properties of rocks below the foundations of those buildings., (© 2024. The masking of specific effects in in vitro assays by cytotoxicity is a commonly known phenomenon. This may result in a partial or complete loss of effect signals. For common in vitro assays, approaches for identifying and quantifying cytotoxic masking are partly available. However, a quantification of cytotoxicity-affected signals is not possible. As an alternative, planar bioassays that combine high-performance thin layer chromatography with in vitro assays, such as the planar yeast estrogen screen (p-YES), might allow for a quantification of cytotoxically affected signals. Affected signals form a typical ring structure with a supressed or completely lacking centre that results in a double peak chromatogram. This study investigates whether these double peaks can be used for fitting a peak function to extrapolate the theoretical, unaffected signals. The precision of the modelling was evaluated for four individual peak functions, using 42 ideal, undistorted peaks from estrogenic model compounds in the p-YES. Modelled ED 50 -values from bisphenol A (BPA) experiments with cytotoxically disturbed signals were 13 times higher than for the apparent data without compensation for cytotoxicity (320 ± 63 ng versus 24 ± 17 ng). This finding has a high relevance for the modelling of mixture effects according to concentration addition that requires unaffected, complete dose-response relationships. Finally, we applied the approach to results of a p-YES assay on leachate samples of an elastomer material used in water engineering. A new method is proposed for detecting typical melamine dopants in food using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensing technology. Melamine specific aptamer was used as the identification probe, and gold magnets (AuNPs@MNPs) and small gold nanoparticles (AuNPs@MBA) were used as the basis for Raman detection. The Raman signal of the detection system can directly detect melamine quantitatively. Under optimized conditions, the detection of melamine was carried out in the low concentration range of 0.001-500 mg/kg, the enhancement factor (EF) was 2.3 × 10 7 , and the detection limit was 0.001 mg/kg. Environmental pollution by plastics is a global issue of increasing concern. However, microplastic analysis in complex environmental matrices, such as soil samples, remains an analytical challenge. Destructive mass-based methods for microplastic analysis do not determine plastics' shape and size, which are essential parameters for reliable ecological risk assessment. By contrast, nondestructive particle-based methods produce such data but require elaborate, time-consuming sample preparation. Thus, time-efficient and reliable methods for microplastic analysis are needed. The present study explored the potential of frequency-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FD-FLIM) for rapidly and reliably identifying as well as differentiating plastics and natural materials from terrestrial environments. We investigated the fluorescence spectra of ten natural materials from terrestrial environments, tire wear particles, and eleven different transparent plastic granulates <5 mm to determine the optimal excitation wavelength for identification and differentiation via FD-FLIM under laboratory conditions. Our comparison of different excitation wavelengths showed that 445 nm excitation exhibited the highest fluorescence intensities. 445 nm excitation was also superior for identifying plastic types and distinguishing them from natural materials from terrestrial environments with a high probability using FD-FLIM. We could demonstrate that FD-FLIM analysis has the potential to contribute to a streamlined and time-efficient direct analysis of microplastic contamination. However, further investigations on size-, shape-, color-, and material-type detection limitations are necessary to evaluate if the direct identification of terrestrial environmental samples of relatively low complexity, such as a surface inspection soil, is possible., (© 2024. Monitoring body temperature and energy expenditure in freely-moving laboratory mice remains a powerful methodology used widely across a variety of disciplines-including circadian biology, sleep research, metabolic phenotyping, and the study of body temperature regulation. Some of the most pronounced changes in body temperature are observed when small heterothermic species reduce their body temperature during daily torpor. Daily torpor is an energy saving strategy characterized by dramatic reductions in body temperature employed by mice and other species when challenged to meet energetic demands. Typical measurements used to describe daily torpor are the measurement of core body temperature and energy expenditure. These approaches can have drawbacks and developing alternatives for these techniques provides options that can be beneficial both from an animal-welfare and study-complexity perspective. First, this paper presents and assesses a method to estimate core body temperature based on measurements of subcutaneous body temperature, and second, a separate approach to better estimate energy expenditure during daily torpor based on core body temperature. Third, the effects of light exposure during the habitual dark phase and sleep deprivation during the light period on body temperature dynamics were tested preliminary in fed and fasted mice. Introduction: Abemaciclib is an oral inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6). Data from the clinical trial monarchE (2023) showed improved survival from invasive disease. The aim of the present article was to conduct an economic assessment of adjuvant treatment with abemaciclib in women with luminal, HER2- and node-positive breast cancer., Methods: A Markov model was constructed with four mutually exclusive health states (disease-free, local recurrence, distal recurrence and death). Analyses were based on the clinical trial monarchE which compared an intervention group (abemaciclib + hormone therapy [HT]) with HT alone. The effectiveness measure used was quality-adjusted life years (QALY), with unit costs and utilities being obtained from existing literature. The incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR) was used to compare the two treatment strategies., Results: Total costs were €98,765 and €17,935 for the abemaciclib plus HT group and the HT alone group, respectively. The health outcome was 10.076QALY for the intervention group and 9.495QALY for the control group, with the ICUR being€139,173/QALY., Conclusion: Despite the significant gains of abemaciclib as adjuvant treatment in terms of progression-free survival, this treatment is not cost-effective for the Spanish National Health System at published prices. Metformin (MET) and sitagliptin (STG) are widely used as the first-line and long-term oral hypoglycemic agents for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the current lack of convenient and rapid measurement methods poses a challenge for individualized management. This study developed a point-of-care (POC) assay method utilizing a miniature mass spectrometer, enabling rapid and accurate quantification of MET and STG concentrations in human blood and urine. By combining the miniature mass spectrometer with paper spray ionization, this method simplifies the process into three to four steps, requires minimal amounts of bodily fluids (50 μL of blood and 2 μL of urine), and is able to obtain quantification results within approximately 2 min. Stable isotope-labeled internal standards were employed to enhance the accuracy and stability of measurement. The MS/MS responses exhibited good linear relationship with concentration, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 25%. Since cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are globally one of the leading causes of death, of which myocardial infarction (MI) can cause irreversible damage and decrease survivors' quality of life, novel therapeutics are needed. Current approaches such as organ transplantation do not fully restore cardiac function or are limited. As a valuable strategy, tissue engineering seeks to obtain constructs that resemble myocardial tissue, vessels, and heart valves using cells, biomaterials as scaffolds, biochemical and physical stimuli. The latter can be induced using a bioreactor mimicking the heart's physiological environment. An extensive review of bioreactors providing perfusion, mechanical and electrical stimulation, as well as the combination of them is provided. An analysis of the stimulations' mechanisms and modes that best suit cardiac construct culture is developed. Finally, we provide insights into bioreactor configuration and culture assessment properties that need to be elucidated for its clinical translation., (© 2024. Electrochemical biosensing continues to advance tirelessly, overcoming barriers that have kept it from leaving research laboratories for many years. Among them, its compromised performance in complex biological matrices due to fouling or receptor stability issues, the limitations in determining toxic and small analytes, and its use, conditioned to the commercial availability of commercial receptors and the exploration of natural molecular interactions, deserved to be highlighted. To address these challenges, in addition to the intrinsic properties of electrochemical biosensing, its coupling with biomimetic materials has played a fundamental role, among which bioinspired phage and peptide probes stand out. The versatility in design and employment of these probes has opened an unimaginable plethora of possibilities for electrochemical biosensing, improving their performance far beyond the development of highly sensitive and selective devices. The state of the art offers robust electroanalytical biotools, capable of operating in complex samples and with exciting opportunities to discover and determine targets regardless of their toxicity and size, the commercial availability of bioreceptors, and prior knowledge of molecular interactions. With all this in mind, this review offers a panoramic, novel, and updated vision of both the tremendous advances and opportunities offered by the combination of electrochemical biosensors with bioinspired phage and peptide probes and the challenges and research efforts that are envisioned in the immediate future., (© 2024. Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs), also called nanozymes, are very attractive as an alternative to horseradish peroxidase in immunoassay development due to their simple and low-cost synthesis, stability and high catalytic activity. Today, there is a method for highly effective PBNP synthesis based on the reduction of an FeCl 3 /K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] mixture by hydrogen peroxide. However, there is a lack of research showcasing the use of these highly effective PBNPs for specific target detection in clinical settings, as well as a lack of comprehensive comparisons with conventional methods. To address this gap, we prepared diagnostic reagents based on highly effective PBNPs by modifying them using gelatin and attaching anti-C-reactive protein (CRP) monoclonal antibodies through cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. As a result, a solid-phase colorimetric immunoassay in a sandwich format (nanozyme-linked immunosorbent assay [NLISA]) using highly effective PBNPs as a label for CRP detection has been demonstrated for the first time. The assay demonstrated a detection limit of 21.8 pg/mL, along with acceptable selectivity, precision (CV < 25%) and accuracy (the recovery index was within acceptable limits (75-125%) for LLOQ /ULOQ range. The analytical performance of this method is on par with sensitive assays developed in the last 5 years. Notably, the results obtained from NLISA align with those from an immunofluorescence assay conducted by a certified clinical laboratory. Self-reported swallowing difficulties are highly prevalent but underreported among older adults. The aging population in India is increasing, yet there is a lack of empirical data on self-reported swallowing difficulties in older adults. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported swallowing difficulties and assess the swallowing-related quality of life (QOL) among community-dwelling older adults in India. We recruited 361 older adults (60-91 years) from the community. Participants completed the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) to assess self-reported swallowing difficulties and the Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) to assess swallowing-related QOL. Participants rated the EAT-10 from 0 for 'no problem' to 4 for 'severe problem'. The DHI rating included 0 for 'never', 2 for 'sometimes', and 4 for 'always'. The total scores of EAT-10 and DHI were summarised using descriptive statistics. Statistically significant differences between pass-fail groups of EAT-10 and DHI were evaluated using an independent t-test and multivariate analysis of variance test, respectively. The overall mean score for EAT-10 was 3.34, and 7.56 for DHI, with higher scores observed among females. 36.6% of older adults self-reported experiencing swallowing difficulties, while 47.4% self-reported having poor swallowing-related QOL at p < 0.05. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.86) was found between EAT-10 and total DHI scores at p < 0.001. The present study sheds light on the widespread yet underreported issue of self-reported swallowing difficulties and the impact on swallowing-related QOL among older adults in India. Purpose: The purpose was to examine the effects of 8-weeks (3 days/week) of linear periodization resistance exercise training (RET) on neuromuscular function in prepubescent youth., Methods: Twenty-five healthy prepubescent youth (11 males, 14 females, age = 9.1 ± 0.8 years) completed the RET (n = 17) or served as controls (CON, n = 8). Isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) and trapezoidal submaximal contractions at 35 and 60% MVC of the right leg extensors were performed with surface electromyography (EMG) recorded from the leg extensors [vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris, and vastus medialis] and flexors (biceps femoris and semitendinosus). EMG amplitude of the leg extensors and flexors were calculated during the MVCs. Motor unit (MU) action potential trains were decomposed from the surface EMG of the VL for the 35 and 60% MVCs. MU firing rates and action potential amplitudes were regressed against recruitment threshold with the y-intercepts and slopes calculated for each contraction. Total leg extensor muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) was collected using ultrasound images. ANOVA models were used to examine potential differences., Results: Isometric strength increased post-RET (P = 0.006) with no changes in leg extensor and flexor EMG amplitude. Furthermore, there were no changes in total CSA or the MU action potential amplitude vs. recruitment threshold relationships. However, there were increases in the firing rates of the higher-threshold MUs post-RET as indicated with greater y-intercepts (P = 0.003) from the 60% MVC and less negative slope (P = 0.004) of the firing rates vs. recruitment threshold relationships at 35% MVC., Conclusions: MU adaptations contribute to strength increases following RET in prepubescent youth., (© 2024. The rapid discrimination of bacteria is currently an emerging trend in the fields of food safety, medical detection, and environmental observation. Traditional methods often require lengthy culturing processes, specialized analytical equipment, and bacterial recognition receptors. In response to this need, we have developed a paper-based fluorescence sensor array platform for identifying different bacteria. The sensor array is based on three unique carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as sensing units, each modified with a different antibiotic (polymyxin B, ampicillin, and gentamicin). These antibiotic-modified CQDs can aggregate on the bacterial surface, triggering aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. The sensor array exhibits varying fluorescent responses to different bacterial species. To achieve low-cost and portable detection, CQDs were formulated into fluorescent ink and used with an inkjet printer to manufacture paper-based sensor arrays. A smartphone was used to collect the responses generated by the bacteria and platform. Diverse machine learning algorithms were utilized to discriminate bacterial types. Our findings showcase the platform's remarkable capability to differentiate among five bacterial strains, within a detection range spanning from 1.0 × 10 3  CFU/mL to 1.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL. Its practicality is further validated through the accurate identification of blind bacterial samples. Introduction: Although neuromuscular function varies significantly between strength and endurance-trained adult athletes, it has yet to be ascertained whether such differences manifest by early adolescence. The aim of the present study was to compare knee extensor neuromuscular characteristics between adolescent athletes who are representative of strength (wrestling) or endurance (triathlon) sports., Methods: Twenty-three triathletes (TRI), 12 wrestlers (WRE) and 12 untrained (CON) male adolescents aged 13 to 15 years participated in the present study. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) knee extensor (KE) torque was measured, and 100-Hz magnetic doublets were delivered to the femoral nerve during and after KE MVIC to quantify the voluntary activation level (%VA). The doublet peak torque (T 100Hz ) and normalized vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) EMG (EMG/M-wave) activities were quantified. VL and RF muscle architecture was also assessed at rest using ultrasound., Results: Absolute and relative (to body mass) KE MVIC torques were significantly higher in WRE than TRI and CON (p < 0.05), but comparable between TRI and CON. No significant differences were observed between groups for %VA, T 100Hz or either VL or RF muscle thickness. However, VL EMG/M-wave was higher, RF fascicle length longer, and pennation angle smaller in WRE than TRI and CON (all p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The wrestlers were stronger than triathletes and controls, potentially as a result of muscle architectural differences and a greater neural activation. Neuromuscular differences can already be detected by early adolescence in males between predominantly endurance and strength sports, which may result from selection bias and/or physical training., (© 2024. Aeromonas hydrophila is one of the major freshwater fish pathogens. In the current study, a cocktail of D6 and CF7 phages was given orally to Labeo rohita to assess phage survival in fish organs as well as to determine the therapeutic efficacy of phage treatment against fish mortality caused by A. hydrophila. In the phage-coated feed, prepared by simple spraying method, phage counts were quite stable for up to 2 months with a decline of ≤ 0.23 log 10 and ≤ 1.66 log 10 PFU/g feed during 4 o C and room temperature storage. Throughout the experimental period of 7 days, both phages could be detected in the gut of fish fed with phage-coated feed. Besides, both CF7 and D6 phages were also detected in fish kidneys indicating the ability of both the phage to cross the intestinal barrier. During challenge studies with LD 50 dose of A. hydrophila, phage cocktail doses of 1 × 10 6 - 1 × 10 8 PFU/g feed prevented the mortality in L. rohita with relative percentage survival (RPS) of 8.7-65.2. When challenged with LD 90 dose of A. hydrophila, an RPS value of 28.6 was obtained at a phage cocktail dose of 1 × 10 8 PFU/g feed. The RPS data showed that orally-fed phage cocktail protected the fish against the mortality caused by A. hydrophila in a dose-dependent manner. A photoelectrochemical sensor for target detection of hydrogen peroxide was designed based on a new heterojunction nanocomposite which was sulfhydryl-borate ester-modified A1/B1-type pillar[5]arene (BP5)-functionalized Au NPs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes hybridized with bismuth bromide oxide (Au@BP5/MWNTs-BiOBr). The specific sensor was based on the direct induction of oxidation by hydrogen peroxide of the borate ester group of pillar[5]arene. Additionally, the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au NPs enhanced visible light capture, the host-guest complexation of BP5 with H 2 O 2 enhanced photocurrent response, the layer-by-layer stacked nanoflower structure of BiOBr provided large specific surface area with more active sites, and the conductivity of MWNTs enhanced the charge separation efficiency and significantly improves the stability of PEC. Their synthesis effect significantly increased the photocurrent signal and further enhanced the detection result. Under the optimal conditions, the linear concentration range of H 2 O 2 detected by the Au@BP5/MWNTs-BiOBr sensor was from 1 to 60 pmol/L. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method were 0.333 pmol/L and 1 pmol/L, respectively, and the sensitivity was 6.471 pmol/L. A ternary hierarchical hybrid Ni@Co x S y /poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-reduced graphene oxide (Ni@Co x S y /PEDOT-rGO) is rationally designed and in situ facilely synthesized as electrocatalyst to construct a binder-free sensing platform for non-enzymatic glucose monitoring through traditional electrodeposition procedure. The as-prepared Ni@Co x S y /PEDOT-rGO presents unique hierarchical structure and multiple valence states as well as strong and robust adhesion between Ni@Co x S y /PEDOT-rGO and GCE. Profiting from the aforementioned merits, the sensing platform constructed under optimal conditions achieved a wide detection range (0.2 μM ~ 2.0 mM) with high sensitivity (1546.32 μA cm -2  mM -1 ), a rapid response time (5 s), an ultralow detection limit (0.094 μM), superior anti-interference performance, excellent reproducibility and considerable stability. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates an acceptable accuracy and appreciable recoveries ranging from 90.0 to 102.0% with less than 3.98% RSD in human blood serum samples, indicating the prospect of the sensor for the real samples analysis. This paper aimed to investigate the influence of motor practice and music performance experiences on musicians' auditory memory, the effect of auditory distinctiveness on melody recognition, and the differences in the working memory of classical and jazz pianists. The study was conducted among 26 jazz and 24 classical music students at Shenyang Conservatory of Music. To achieve the goal set, a melody recognition ability was analyzed after listening, performing without sound, and simultaneous listening and performing using computer recordings and pianist-taken notes. The study was conducted following repeated measures mixed design. The within-group variable was the learning condition. As the within-participant variable, the number of melody practicing trials was chosen. The type of influence on auditory memory was chosen as a between-group variable. The dependent variables were auditory recognition score, motor imagery ability, and auditory imagery ability. Students' recognition of the heard melodies was assessed by means of a 3-point Likert scale. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to investigate the relationship between working memory and other student characteristics. The study outcomes unveiled that pianists are much better at recognizing tunes they generate themselves in auditory-motor practice than auditory practice alone. It was pointed out that the ability to recognize melody in auditory-motor learning is influenced by its acoustic characteristics. A green and sensitive ratio fluorescence strategy was proposed for the detection of formaldehyde (FA) in food based on a kind of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-53(Fe)-NO 2 , and nitrogen-doped Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (N-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs) with a blue fluorescence at 450 nm. As a type of MOFs with oxidase-like activity, MIL-53(Fe)-NO 2 can catalyze o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into yellow fluorescent product 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with a fluorescent emission at 560 nm. DAP has the ability to suppress the blue light of N-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs due to inner filter effect (IFE). Nevertheless, Schiff base reaction can occur between FA and OPD, inhibiting DAP production. This results in a weakening of the IFE which reverses the original fluorescence color and intensity of DAP and N-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs. So, the ratio of fluorescence intensity detected at respective 450 nm and 560 nm was designed as the readout signal to detect FA in food. The linear range of FA detection was 1-200 µM, with a limit of detection of 0.49 µM. The method developed was successfully used to detect FA in food with satisfactory results. It indicates that MIL-53(Fe)-NO 2 , OPD, and N-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs (MON) system constructed by integrating the mimics enzyme, enzyme substrate, and fluorescent quantum dots has potential application for FA detection in practical samples., (© 2024. Parabens have historically served as antimicrobial preservatives in a range of consumables such as food, beverages, medications, and personal care products due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties. Traditionally, these compounds were believed to exhibit low toxicity, causing minimal irritation, and possessing limited sensitization potential. However, recent evidence suggests that parabens might function as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Consequently, extensive research is underway to elucidate potential human health implications arising from exposure to these substances. Among these parabens, particular concerns have been raised regarding the potential adverse effects of iso-butylparaben (IBP). Studies have specifically highlighted its potential for inducing hormonal disruption, significant ocular damage, and allergic skin reactions. This study aimed to evaluate the prolonged systemic toxicity, semen quality, and estrus cycle in relation to endocrine disruption endpoints, alongside assessing the toxicokinetic behavior of IBP in Sprague-Dawley rats following a 13-week repeated subcutaneous administration. The rats were administered either the vehicle (4% Tween 80) or IBP at dosage levels of 2, 10, and 50 mg/kg/day for 13 weeks. Blood collection for toxicokinetic study was conducted on three specified days: day 1 (1st), day 30 (2nd), and day 91 (3rd). Systemic toxicity assessment and potential endocrine effects were based on various parameters including mortality rates, clinical signs, body weights, food and water consumption, ophthalmological findings, urinalysis, hematological and clinical biochemistry tests, organ weights, necropsy and histopathological findings, estrus cycle regularity, semen quality, and toxicokinetic behavior. The findings revealed that IBP induced local irritation at the injection site in males at doses ≥ 10 mg/kg/day and in females at 50 mg/kg/day; however, systemic toxicity was not observed. Consequently, the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for IBP was determined to be 50 mg/kg/day in rats of both sexes, indicating no impact on the endocrine system. The toxicokinetics of IBP exhibited dose-dependent systemic exposure, reaching a maximum dose of 50 mg/kg/day, and repeated administration over 13 weeks showed no signs of accumulation., (© 2024. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by progressive neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration from disease onset that, if left untreated, can result in the accumulation of irreversible neurological disability. Early intervention with high-efficacy therapies (HETs) is increasingly recognized as the best strategy to delay or mitigate disease progression from the earliest stages of the disease and to prevent long-term neurodegeneration. Although there is growing clinical and real-world evidence supporting early HET intervention, foregoing this strategy in favor of a traditional escalation approach prioritizing lower-efficacy disease-modifying therapies remains a common approach in clinical practice. This review explores potential health care professional- and patient-related barriers to the early use of HETs in patients with MS in the United States. Barriers can include regulatory and reimbursement restrictions; knowledge gaps and long-term safety concerns among health care professionals; and various individual, cultural, and societal factors affecting patients. The development of cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts is critical to help electrochemical non-enzymatic sensors achieve high performance. Here, a new class of catalyst, Ru single atoms confined on Cu nanotubes as a single-atom alloy (Ru 1 Cu NTs), with a unique electronic structure and property, was developed to construct a novel electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor for the first time. The Ru 1 Cu NTs with a diameter of about 24.0 nm showed a much lower oxidation potential (0.38 V) and 9.0-fold higher response (66.5 μA) current than Cu nanowires (Cu NWs, oxidation potential 0.47 V and current 7.4 μA) for glucose electrocatalysis. Moreover, as an electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor, Ru 1 Cu NTs not only exhibited twofold higher sensitivity (54.9 μA mM -1  cm -2 ) and wider linear range (0.5-8 mM) than Cu NWs, but also showed a low detection limit (5.0 μM), excellent selectivity, and great stability. According to theoretical calculation results, the outstanding catalytic and sensing performance of Ru 1 Cu NTs could be ascribed to the upshift of the d-band center that helped promote glucose adsorption. Purpose: Detection and prediction of the rate of brain volume loss with age is a significant unmet need in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). In this study we construct detailed brain volume maps for PPMS patients. These maps compare age-related changes in both cortical and sub-cortical regions with those in healthy individuals., Methods: We conducted retrospective analyses of brain volume using T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans of a large cohort of PPMS patients and healthy subjects. The volume of brain parenchyma (BP), cortex, white matter (WM), deep gray matter, thalamus, and cerebellum were measured using the robust SynthSeg segmentation tool. Age- and gender-related regression curves were constructed based on data from healthy subjects, with the 95% prediction interval adopted as the normality threshold for each brain region., Results: We analyzed 495 MRI scans from 169 PPMS patients, aged 20-79 years, alongside 563 exams from healthy subjects aged 20-86. Compared to healthy subjects, a higher proportion of PPMS patients showed lower than expected brain volumes in all regions except the cerebellum. The most affected areas were BP, WM, and thalamus. Lower brain volumes correlated with longer disease duration for BP and WM, and higher disability for BP, WM, cortex, and thalamus., Conclusions: Constructing age- and gender-related brain volume maps enabled identifying PPMS patients at a higher risk of brain volume loss. Background: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is the most common solid renal tumor in neonates. Therefore, patients <3 months of age are advised to undergo upfront nephrectomy, whereas invasive procedures at diagnosis in patients ≥3 months of age are discouraged by the International Society of Pediatric Oncology-Renal Tumor Study Group (SIOP-RTSG). Nevertheless, discriminating congenital mesoblastic nephroma, especially from the more common Wilms tumor, solely based on imaging remains difficult. Recently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the preferred modality. Studies focusing on MRI characteristics of congenital mesoblastic nephroma are limited., Objective: This study aims to identify diagnostic MRI characteristics of congenital mesoblastic nephroma in the largest series of patients to date., Materials and Methods: In this retrospective multicenter study, five SIOP-RTSG national review radiologists identified 52 diagnostic MRIs of histologically proven congenital mesoblastic nephromas. MRI was performed following SIOP-RTSG protocols, while radiologists assessed their national cases using a validated case report form., Results: Patients (24/52 classic, 11/52 cellular, and 15/52 mixed type congenital mesoblastic nephroma, 2/52 unknown) had a median age of 1 month (range 1 day-3 months). Classic type congenital mesoblastic nephroma appeared homogeneous with a lack of hemorrhage, necrosis and/or cysts, showing a concentric ring sign in 14 (58.3%) patients. Cellular and mixed type congenital mesoblastic nephroma appeared more heterogeneous and were larger (311.6 and 174.2 cm 3 , respectively, versus 41.0 cm 3 for the classic type (P<0.001)). All cases were predominantly T2-weighted isointense and T1-weighted hypointense, and mean overall apparent diffusion coefficient values ranged from 1.05-1.10×10 -3 mm 2 /s., Conclusion: This retrospective international collaborative study showed classic type congenital mesoblastic nephroma predominantly presented as a homogeneous T2-weighted isointense mass with a typical concentric ring sign, whereas the cellular type appeared more heterogeneous. Future studies may use identified MRI characteristic of congenital mesoblastic nephroma for validation and for exploring the discriminative non-invasive value of MRI, especially from Wilms tumor., (© 2024. A three-dimensional (3D) self-assembled AuNPs/Ti 3 C 2 MXene hydrogel (AuNPs/Ti 3 C 2 MXH) nanocomposite was prepared for the fabrication of a novel microRNA-122 electrochemical biosensor. The 3D hydrogel structure was gelated from two-dimensional MXene nanosheets with the assistance of graphite oxide and ethylenediamine. MXene hydrogels supported the in situ formation of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) that predominantly exploring the (111) facet, and these AuNPs are utilized as carriers for hairpin DNA (hpDNA) probes, facilitating DNA hybridization. MXene acted as both a reductant and stabilizer, significantly improving the electrochemical signal. In addition, the conjugation of PAMAM dendrimer-encapsulated AuNPs and H-DNA worked as an ideal bridge to connect targets and efficient electrochemical tags, providing a high amplification efficiency for the sensing of microRNA-122. A linear relationship between the peak currents and the logarithm of the concentrations of microRNA-122 from 1.0 × 10 -2 to 1.0 × 10 2 fM (I = 1.642 + 0.312 lgc, R 2  = 0.9891), is obtained. Isoniazid and streptomycin are vital drugs for treating tuberculosis, which are utilized as efficient anti-tuberculosis agents. This paper presents a novel visible-light-driven composite photocatalyst Ti 3 C 2 /Bi/BiOI, which was built from Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets and Bi/BiOI microspheres. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors based on Ti 3 C 2 /Bi/BiOI were synthesized for isoniazid identification, which showed a linear concentration range of 0.1-125 μM with a detection limit of 0.05 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, we designed a PEC aptasensors based on aptamer/Ti 3 C 2 /Bi/BiOI to detect streptomycin in 0.1 M PBS covering the electron donor isoniazid, because the isoniazid consumes photogenerated holes thus increasing the photocurrent effectively and preventing photogenerated electron-hole pairs from being recombined. Furthermore, PEC aptasensors based on aptamer/Ti 3 C 2 /Bi/BiOI were synthesized for streptomycin identification, which exhibited a linear concentration range of 0.01-1000 nM with a detection limit of 2.3 × 10 -3 nM (S/N = 3), and are well stable in streptomycin sensing., (© 2024. The global advocacy of resource conservation and waste management emphasizes the significance of sustainable practices, particularly in sectors such as paper manufacturing and recycling. Currently, conventional chemical methods are predominant for paper production, necessitating the use of substantial amount of toxic chemicals. This chemical-intensive approach compromises the recycled fiber quality, generates hazardous effluent causing serious ecological threats which triggers regulatory complexities for the mills. To address these challenges modern research suggests adopting sustainable eco-friendly practices such as employing enzymes. This review aims to explore the applicability of 'laccase' enzyme for paper recycling, investigating its properties and contribution to improved recycling practices. By delving into the potential application of laccase integration into the papermaking process, this article sheds light on the limitations inherent in traditional methods surmounted within both research and translational landscapes. Objectives: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births are major adverse birth outcomes related to newborn health. In contrast, the association between ambient air pollution levels and SGA or LGA births has not been investigated in Japan; hence, the purpose of our study is to investigate this association., Methods: We used birth data from Vital Statistics in Japan from 2017 to 2021 and municipality-level data on air pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), photochemical oxidants, and particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5 ). Ambient air pollution levels throughout the first, second, and third trimesters, as well as the whole pregnancy, were calculated for each birth. The association between SGA/LGA and ambient levels of the air pollutants was investigated using crude and adjusted log-binomial regression models. In addition, a regression model with spline functions was also used to detect the non-linear association., Results: We analyzed data from 2,434,217 births. Adjusted regression analyses revealed statistically significant and positive associations between SGA birth and SO 2 level, regardless of the exposure period. Specifically, the risk ratio for average SO 2 values throughout the whole pregnancy was 1.014 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.009, 1.019) per 1 ppb increase. In addition, regression analysis with spline functions indicated that an increase in risk ratio for SGA birth depending on SO 2 level was linear. Furthermore, statistically significant and negative associations were observed between LGA birth and SO 2 except for the third trimester., Conclusions: It was suggested that ambient level of SO 2 during the pregnancy term is a risk factor for SGA birth in Japan., (© 2024. A fluorescent multichannel sensor array has been established based on three carbon dots derived from Tibetan medicine waste for rapid quantification and discrimination of six heavy metal ions. Due to the chelation between metal ions and carbon dots (CDs), this fluorescence "turn off" mode sensing array can quantify six metal ions as low as "μM" level. Moreover, the six heavy metal ions display varying quenching effects on these three CDs owing to diverse chelating abilities between each other, producing differential fluorescent signals for three sensing channels, which can be plotted as specific fingerprints and converted into intuitive identification profiles via principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) technologies to accurately distinguish Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Mn 2+ , Ag + , Ce 4+ , and Ni 2+ with the minimum differentiated concentration of 5 μM. Valuably, this sensing array unveils good sensitivity, exceptional selectivity, ideal stability, and excellent anti-interference ability for both mixed standards and actual samples. Our contribution provides a novel approach for simultaneous determination of multiple heavy metal ions in environmental samples, and it will inspire the development of other advanced optical sensing array for simultaneous quantification and discrimination of multiple targets., (© 2024. A dual-signal ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor has been developed  for AFB1 detection using thionine/Au/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Thi/Au/ZIF-8) nanomaterials and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) reaction. Thi/Au/ZIF-8 combined with DNA hairpin 2 (H2) was used as a signal probe. [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- was served as another signal probe, and the I Thi/Au/ZIF-8 /I [Fe(CN)6] 3-/4- ratio was for the first time utilized to quantify AFB1. AFB1-induced CHA was used to expand the ratio of electrical signals. In the presence of AFB1, H2/Thi/Au/ZIF-8 bound to the electrode via CHA, enhanced  the current signal of Thi/Au/ZIF-8. H2 contained the DNA phosphate backbone hindered [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- redox reaction and resulted in a lower [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-/4- current signal. This aptasensor exhibited high specificity for AFB1, a linear range of 0.1 pg mL -1 to 100 ng mL -1 , and a detection limit of 0.089 pg mL -1 . It demonstrated favorable sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and repeatability. Background: Several patients with language-eloquent gliomas face language deterioration postoperatively. Persistent aphasia is frequently associated with damage to subcortical language pathways. Underlying mechanisms still need to be better understood, complicating preoperative risk assessment. This study compared qualitative and quantitative functionally relevant subcortical differences pre- and directly postoperatively in glioma patients with and without aphasia., Methods: Language-relevant cortical sites were defined using navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) language mapping in 74 patients between 07/2016 and 07/2019. Post-hoc nTMS-based diffusion tensor imaging tractography was used to compare a tract's pre- and postoperative visualization, volume and fractional anisotropy (FA), and the preoperative distance between tract and lesion and postoperative overlap with the resection cavity between the following groups: no aphasia (NoA), tumor- or previous resection induced aphasia persistent pre- and postoperatively (TIA&#95;P), and surgery-induced transient or permanent aphasia (SIA&#95;T or SIA&#95;P)., Results: Patients with NoA, TIA&#95;P, SIA&#95;T, and SIA&#95;P showed distinct fasciculus arcuatus (AF) and inferior-fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) properties. The AF was more frequently reconstructable, and the FA of IFOF was higher in NoA than TIA&#95;P cases (all p ≤ 0.03). Simultaneously, SIA&#95;T cases showed higher IFOF fractional anisotropy than TIA&#95;P cases (p < 0.001) and the most considerable AF volume loss overall. While not statistically significant, the four SIA&#95;P cases showed complete loss of ventral language streams postoperatively, the highest resection-cavity-AF-overlap, and the shortest AF to tumor distance., Conclusion: Functionally relevant qualitative and quantitative differences in AF and IFOF provide a pre- and postoperative pathophysiological and clinically relevant diagnostic indicator that supports surgical risk stratification., (© 2024. A flexible, wearable, non-invasive contact lens sensor utilizing nickel-cobalt metal-organic framework (Ni-Co-MOF) based hydrogel is introduced for urea monitoring in tear samples. The synthesized Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel exhibits a porous structure with interconnected voids, as visualized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Detailed structural and vibrational properties of the material were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The developed Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel sensor showcases a detection limit of 0.445 mM for urea within a linear range of 0.5-70 mM. Notably, it demonstrates exceptional selectivity, effectively distinguishing against interfering species like UA, AA, glucose, dopamine, Cl - , K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and IgG. The enhanced electrocatalytic performance of the Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel electrode is attributed to the presence of Ni and Co, fostering Ni 2+ oxidation on the surface and forming a Co 2+ complex that acts as a catalyst for urea oxidation. The fabricated sensor exhibits successful detection and retrieval of urea in simulated tear samples, showcasing promising potential for bioanalytical applications. The binder-free, non-toxic nature of the Ni-Co-MOF hydrogel sensor presents exciting avenues for future utilization in non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing, including applications in wearable devices, point-of-care diagnostics, and personalized healthcare monitoring., (© 2024. The development of distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to monitor Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in food samples is presented. The fluidic workflow on the device is controlled using a designed hydrophilic bridge valve. Dopamine serves as a monomer for the formation of the E. coli-selective MIP layer on the dPADs. The detection principle relies on the inhibition of the E. coli toward copper (II) (Cu 2+ )-triggered oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) on the paper substrate. Quantitative detection is simply determined through visual observation of the residual yellow color of the OPD in the detection zone, which is proportional to E. coli concentration. The sensing exhibits a linear range from 25.0 to 1200.0 CFU mL -1 (R 2  = 0.9992) and a detection limit (LOD) of 25.0 CFU mL -1 for E. coli detection. Additionally, the technique is highly selective with no interference even from the molecules that have shown to react with OPD to form oxidized OPD. The developed device demonstrates accuracy and precision for E. coli quantification in food samples with recovery percentages between 98.3 and 104.7% and the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.55%. T-test validation shows no significant difference in E. coli concentration measured between our method and a commercial assay. The proposed dPAD sensor has the potential for selective and affordable E. coli determination  in food samples without requiring sample preparation. Furthermore, this strategy can be extended to monitor other molecules for which MIP can be developed and integrated into paper-microfluidic platform., (© 2024. Considering that avian leukosis virus (ALV) infection has inflicted massive economic losses on the poultry breeding industry in most countries, its early diagnosis remains an important measure for timely treatment and control of the disease, for which a rapid and sensitive point-of-care test is required. We established a user-friendly, economical, and rapid visualization method for ALV amplification products based on reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) combined with an immunochromatographic strip in a lateral flow device (LFD). Using the ALVp27 gene as the target, five RT-LAMP primers and one fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labeled probe were designed. After 60 min of RT-LAMP amplification at 64 °C, the products could be visualized directly using the LFD. The detection limit of this assay for ALV detection was 10 2 RNA copies/μL, and the sensitivity was 100 times that of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), showing high specificity and sensitivity. To verify the clinical practicality of this assay for detecting ALV, the gold standard RT-PCR method was used for comparison, and consistent results were obtained with both assays. Purpose: Renal cell carcinoma is an aggressive disease with a high mortality rate. Management has drastically changed with the new era of immunotherapy, and novel strategies are being developed; however, identifying systemic treatments is still challenging. This paper presents an update of the expert panel consensus from the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group and the Latin American Renal Cancer Group on advanced renal cell carcinoma management in Brazil., Methods: A panel of 34 oncologists and experts in renal cell carcinoma discussed and voted on the best options for managing advanced disease in Brazil, including systemic treatment of early and metastatic renal cell carcinoma as well as nonclear cell tumours. The results were compared with the literature and graded according to the level of evidence., Results: Adjuvant treatments benefit patients with a high risk of recurrence after surgery, and the agents used are pembrolizumab and sunitinib, with a preference for pembrolizumab. Neoadjuvant treatment is exceptional, even in initially unresectable cases. First-line treatment is mainly based on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs); the choice of treatment is based on the International Metastatic Database Consortium (IMCD) risk score. Patients at favourable risk receive ICIs in combination with TKIs. Patients classified as intermediate or poor risk receive ICIs, without preference for ICI + ICIs or ICI + TKIs. Data on nonclear cell renal cancer treatment are limited. Active surveillance has a place in treating favourable-risk patients. Either denosumab or zoledronic acid can be used for treating metastatic bone disease., Conclusion: Immunotherapy and targeted therapy are the standards of care for advanced disease. The utilization and sequencing of these therapeutic agents hinge upon individual risk scores and responses to previous treatments. Through enabling whole blood detection in point-of-care testing (POCT), sedimentation-based plasma separation promises to enhance the functionality and extend the application range of lateral flow assays (LFAs). To streamline the entire process from the introduction of the blood sample to the generation of quantitative immune-fluorescence results, we combined a simple plasma separation technique, an immunoreaction, and a micropump-driven external suction control system in a polymer channel-based LFA. Our primary objective was to eliminate the reliance on sample-absorbing separation membranes, the use of active separation forces commonly found in POCT, and ultimately allowing finger prick testing. Combining the principle of agglutination of red blood cells with an on-device sedimentation-based separation, our device allows for the efficient and fast separation of plasma from a 25-µL blood volume within a mere 10 min and overcomes limitations such as clogging, analyte adsorption, and blood pre-dilution. To simplify this process, we stored the agglutination agent in a dried state on the test and incorporated a filter trench to initiate sedimentation-based separation. The separated plasma was then moved to the integrated mixing area, initiating the immunoreaction by rehydration of probe-specific fluorophore-conjugated antibodies. The biotinylated immune complex was subsequently trapped in the streptavidin-rich detection zone and quantitatively analyzed using a fluorescence microscope. Normalized to the centrifugation-based separation, our device demonstrated high separation efficiency of 96% and a yield of 7.23 µL (= 72%). Purpose: This study is to investigate the increase in retinal venous pressure (RVP) induced by a stepwise increase in airway pressure (AirP) using the new IOPstim method, which is designed to artificially increase the intraocular pressure (IOP) and thus to stimulate vascular pulsation., Methods: Twenty-eight healthy subjects were examined in the left eye. The RVP was measured at baseline and at four different levels of AirP (10, 20, 30, and 40 mmHg) using the new IOPstim method: a half balloon of 8 mm diameter is inflated laterally to the cornea under observation of the central retinal vein. As soon as the vein pulsates at a certain AirP level, the IOP is measured with a commercially available tonometer, which then corresponds to the RVP., Results: Spontaneous venous pulsation was observed in all study participants. The mean RVP values at baseline and at the AirP levels of 10, 20, 30, and 40 mmHg were 17.6 ± 2.8 mmHg; 20.1 ± 3.0 mmHg; 22.1 ± 3.5 mmHg; 24.3 ± 3.7 mmHg, and 26.6 ± 4.2 mmHg, respectively. The mean RVP values of each AirP level were statistically significantly different from each other in pairwise comparison. In a linear mixed model, the effect of AirP on RVP was highly significant (p < 0.001). In the model, a 10-mmHg increase in AirP resulted in a linear increase in RVP of 2.2 mmHg., Conclusion: An increase in AirP was accompanied by a linear increase in RVP. The influence of AirP on RVP, and thus on retinal perfusion pressure during the Valsalva maneuver, is less than was assumed based on previous studies in which contact lens dynamometry was used., (© 2024. Alumina inorganic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on a glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs-Al 2 O 3 -MIP/GCE) was firstly designed and fabricated by one-step electro deposition technique for the detection of uric acid (UA) in sweat. The UA templates were embedded within the inorganic MIP by co-deposition with Al 2 O 3 . Through the evaluation of morphology and structure by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), it was verified that the specific recognition sites can be fabricated in the electrodeposited Al 2 O 3 molecular imprinted layer. Due to the high selectivity of molecular imprinting holes, the MWCNTs-Al 2 O 3 -MIP/GCE electrode demonstrated an impressive imprinting factor of approximately 2.338 compared to the non-molecularly imprinted glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs-Al 2 O 3 -NIP/GCE) toward uric acid detection. Moreover, it exhibited a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 50 nM for UA with wide detection range from 50 nM to 600 μM. The MWCNTs-Al 2 O 3 -MIP/GCE electrode also showed strong interference resistance against common substances found in sweat. These results highlight the excellent interference resistance and selectivity of MWCNTs-Al 2 O 3 -MIP/GCE sensor, positioning it as a novel sensing platform for non-invasive uric acid detection in human sweat., (© 2024. Rapid technological advancements have created opportunities for new solutions in various industries, including healthcare. One exciting new direction in this field of innovation is the combination of skin-based technologies and augmented reality (AR). These dermatological devices allow for the continuous and non-invasive measurement of vital signs and biomarkers, enabling the real-time diagnosis of anomalies, which have applications in telemedicine, oncology, dermatology, and early diagnostics. Despite its many potential benefits, there is a substantial information vacuum regarding using flexible photonics in conjunction with augmented reality for medical purposes. This review explores the current state of dermal augmented reality and flexible optics in skin-conforming sensing platforms by examining the obstacles faced thus far, including technical hurdles, demanding clinical validation standards, and problems with user acceptance. Our main areas of interest are skills, chiroptical properties, and health platform applications, such as optogenetic pixels, spectroscopic imagers, and optical biosensors. My skin-enhanced spherical dichroism and powerful spherically polarized light enable thorough physical inspection with these augmented reality devices: diabetic tracking, skin cancer diagnosis, and cardiovascular illness: preventative medicine, namely blood pressure screening. We demonstrate how to accomplish early prevention using case studies and emergency detection. Finally, it addresses real-world obstacles that hinder fully realizing these materials' extraordinary potential in advancing proactive and preventative personalized medicine, including technical constraints, clinical validation gaps, and barriers to widespread adoption., (© 2024. Background: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with advanced gastric cancer in the real world., Methods: The retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical records of 402 patients with advanced gastric cancer who were admitted to the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between December 2017 and April 2022 and who had received immunotherapy. Observation target: drug use, treatment, adverse reaction type and grade, objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), progression free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS)., Results: By retrospectively analyzing the data of patients with advanced gastric cancer treated with ICIs previously admitted to our medical center, we found some clinical characteristic factors associated with the occurrence of irAEs as well as the efficacy and prognosis: the presence or absence of hypertension, whether or not to receive targeted therapies can predict the occurrence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), and the more the presence of irAEs, the better the prognosis. These can help clinicians in clinical drug selection., Conclusions: The results of this paper show that the occurrence of irAEs is associated with patients' OS. irAEs occurrence can prolong patients' OS. irAEs occurrence may serve as a surrogate marker for ICIs., (© 2024. Heavy metal pollution has attracted global attention because of its high toxicity, non-biodegradability, and carcinogenicity. Electrochemical sensors are extensively employed for the detection of low concentrations of heavy metal ions (HMIs). However, their applicability is often limited to the detection of ions that exhibit electrochemical signals exclusively in aqueous solutions. In this study, we proposed a multi-responsive detection platform based on the modification of horseradish peroxidase@zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8/thionine/gold/ionic liquid-reduced graphene oxide (HRP@ZIF-8/THI/Au/IL-rGO). This platform demonstrated its capability to detect various metal ions, including those without conventional electrochemical signals. The Au/IL-rGO composite structure enhanced the specific surface area available for the reaction. Furthermore, the in situ growth of HRP@ZIF-8 not only shielded the THI signal prior to detection but also protected the electrode material. It was important to note that the introduced edetate disodium dihydrate (EDTA) had the ability to complex with various HMIs. When excess EDTA was present, it could cleave ZIF-8 and release HRP. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), HRP promoted the oxidation of THI previously reduced by the electrode and thus showed excellent sensitivity for HMIs detection. The proposed method overcame the limitation of traditional electrochemical sensors, which solely relied on electrochemical signals for detecting metal ions. This paper describes the use of PolyJet 3D printing to fabricate microchip electrophoresis devices with integrated microwire electrodes for amperometric detection. The fabrication process involves 3D printing of two separate pieces, a channel layer and an electrode layer. The channel layer is created by 3D printing on a pre-fabricated mold with a T-intersection. For the electrode layer, a stencil design is printed directly on the printing tray and covered with a piece of transparent glass. Microwire electrodes are adhered over the glass piece (guided by underlaying stencil) and a CAD design of the electrode layer is then printed on top of the microwire electrode. After delamination from the glass after printing, the microwire is embedded in the printed piece, with the stencil design ensuring that alignment and positioning of the electrode is reproducible for each print. After a thermal bonding step between the channel layer and electrode layer, a complete electrophoresis device with integrated microelectrodes for amperometric detection results. It is shown that this approach enables different microwire electrodes (gold or platinum) and sizes (100 or 50 µm) to be integrated in an end-channel configuration with no gap between the electrode and the separation channel. These devices were used to separate a mixture of catecholamines and the effect of separation voltage on the potential voltage applied on the working electrode was also investigated. In addition, the effect of electrode size on the number of theoretical plates and limit of detection was studied. Finally, a device that contains different channel heights and a detection electrode was 3D-printed to integrate continuous flow sampling with microchip electrophoresis and amperometric detection., (© 2024. Wernicke (Der aphasische Symptomencomplex: Eine psychologische Studie auf anatomischer Basis. Cohn und Weigert, Breslau.  https://wellcomecollection.org/works/dwv5w9rw , 1874) proposed a model of the functional neuroanatomy of spoken word repetition, production, and comprehension. At the heart of this epoch-making model are psychological reflex arcs underpinned by fiber tracts connecting sensory to motor areas. Here, I evaluate the central assumption of psychological reflex arcs in light of what we have learned about language in the brain during the past 150 years. I first describe Wernicke's 1874 model and the evidence he presented for it. Next, I discuss his updates of the model published in 1886 and posthumously in 1906. Although the model had an enormous immediate impact, it lost influence after the First World War. Unresolved issues included the anatomical underpinnings of the psychological reflex arcs, the role of auditory images in word production, and the sufficiency of psychological reflex arcs, which was questioned by Wundt (Grundzüge der physiologischen Psychologie.
