Experimental economics is, nowadays, a well-established approach to investigate agents' behavior under economic incentives. In the last decade, a fast-growing number of studies have focused on the application of experimental methodology to health policy issues. The results of that stream of literature have been intriguing and strongly policy oriented. However, those findings are scattered between different health-related topics, making it difficult to grasp the overall state-of-the-art. Hence, to make the main contributions understandable at a glance, we conduct a systematic literature review of laboratory experiments on the supply of health services. Of the 1248 articles retrieved from 2011, 56 articles published in peer-review journals have met our inclusion criteria. Objectives: The occurrence of implant-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been reported in osteoporotic patients, particularly in association with bisphosphonate therapy. This study aimed to investigate the risk of implant surgery and implant presence for ONJ occurrence in osteoporotic patients longitudinally., Methods: Based on Korean National Health Information Database, subjects over the age of 65 who were diagnosed with osteoporosis between July 2014 and December 2016 were included. The implant group included subjects who had undergone dental implant surgery between January 2017 and December 2017, while the control group included those who had no history of dental implants. The primary outcome was the occurrence of ONJ, and the date of final follow-up was December 2020., Results: A total of 332,728 subjects with osteoporosis were included in the analysis: 83,182 in the implant group and 249,546 in the control group. The risk of ONJ among those who had undergone implant surgery (risk of implant surgery-associated ONJ) was not higher than that among those without implant surgery. The risk of ONJ among those with implants (risk of implant presence-associated ONJ) was lower than that among those without implants. Even in subjects with a history of bisphosphonates, steroids, periodontitis, or tooth extraction, those who had undergone implant surgery or had implants did not have a higher ONJ risk than those who had not undergone surgery or did not have implants; rather, they showed a lower risk., Conclusions: The results may suggest that dental implants are not associated with an increased risk of ONJ. A further study on whether dental implants are associated with lower ONJ risk is needed., Clinical Relevance: Dental implants did not increase the risk of ONJ development in osteoporotic patients, even with a history of bisphosphonates. This may suggest that the risk profiles for ONJ occurrence between selective insertion of dental implants and other dentoalveolar surgery associated with infectious conditions are different., (© 2024. Purpose: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a significant complication which can present following a dental extraction in patients receiving anti-resorptive and anti-angiogenic medications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible beneficial effect of L-PRF in the prevention of MRONJ in patients receiving these medications and requiring dental extractions., Methods: Thirty-nine patients were included and divided into two groups, depending on whether L-PRF was used after the required dental extraction or not. Subsequently, the patients were categorised into low and high-risk for developing MRONJ, as recommended by the SDCEP guidance., Results: None of the patients in the L-PRF group returned with established MRONJ. Five high-risk patients in the control group presented with established MRONJ in the follow-up appointment. A significant statistical difference (p = 0.04) was observed following a comparison of the high-risk patients of the two groups., Conclusion: These encouraging results suggest that L-PRF may be useful in the prevention of MRONJ following a dental extraction especially in patients of the higher risk category. Purpose: The main objective of this study is to assess the test-retest and inter-administration mode reliability of the Impact of Vision Impairment profile (IVI), a common patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for people with chronic eye diseases., Methods: The IVI was administered to adult patients with stable, chronic eye diseases two to four times per participant (average intervals between administrations 12 to 20 days; maximum two phone interviews, paper administration, electronic administration) by two trained interviewers. Rasch models were fit to the data. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs), mean differences and Cronbach's alpha between test-retest administrations (two phone interviews) and inter-mode comparisons were calculated., Results: Two hundred-sixteen patients (mean age 67 ± 12 years, 40% male) were included in the study. The IVI met all psychometric requirements of the Rasch model, and the division into the domains of functional items (IVI&#95;F) and emotional items (IVI&#95;E) corresponded to the German validation study. ICCs (all for IVI&#95;F and IVI&#95;E, respectively) for the retest administrations were 0.938 and 0.912, and 0.853 and 0.893 for inter-mode comparisons phone/paper, 0.939 and 0.930 for phone/electronic, and 0.937 and 0.920 for paper/electronic (all p < 0.01). Mean differences (all for IVI&#95;F and IVI&#95;E, respectively) for the retest administrations were 2.8% and 0.7% and ranged from 2.0% to 6.2% and from 0.4 % to 4.9% between administration modes. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.886 to 0.944 for retest and inter-mode comparisons., Conclusion: Due to the high test-retest reliability and the almost equally high comparability of different modes of administration of the IVI, the study endorses its use as a robust PROM to capture vision-related quality of life. Our results further support the use of the IVI as an endpoint in clinical trials and may simplify implementing it in both clinical trials or real-world evidence generation by offering multiple administration modes with high reliability., (© 2024. Sweat is easily accessible from the human skin's surface. It is secreted by the eccrine glands and contains a wealth of physiological information, including metabolites and electrolytes like glucose and Na ions. Sweat is a particularly useful biofluid because of its easy and non-invasive access, unlike other biofluids, like blood. On the other hand, nanomaterials have started to show promise operation as a competitive substitute for biosensors and molecular sensors throughout the last 10 years. Among the most synthetic nanomaterials that are studied, applied, and discussed, carbon nanomaterials are special. They are desirable candidates for sensor applications because of their many intrinsic electrical, magnetic, and optical characteristics; their chemical diversity and simplicity of manipulation; their biocompatibility; and their effectiveness as a chemically resistant platform. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon dots (CDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene have been intensively investigated as molecular sensors or as components that can be integrated into devices. A new conductive ink based on the addition of carbon black to a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix is developed and investigated for electrochemical sensing and biosensing applications. The produced devices were characterized using morphological and electrochemical techniques and modified with Pd nanoparticles to enhance electrical conductivity and reaction kinetics. With the aid of chemometrics, the parameters for metal deposition were investigated and the sensor was applied to the determination of Parkinson's disease biomarkers, specifically epinephrine and α-synuclein. A linear behavior was obtained in the range 0.75 to 100 μmol L -1 of the neurotransmitter, and the device displayed a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.051 μmol L -1 . The three-electrode system was then tested using samples of synthetic cerebrospinal fluid. Afterward, the device was modified with specific antibodies to quantify α-synuclein using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In phosphate buffer, a linear range was obtained for α-synuclein concentrations from 1.5 to 15 μg mL -1 , with a calculated LOD of 0.13 μg mL -1 . The proposed immunosensor was also applied to blood serum samples, and, in this case, the linear range was observed from 6.0 to 100.5 μg mL -1 of α-synuclein, with a LOD = 1.3 µg mL -1 . Background: Neurological disorders remain a worldwide concern due to their increasing prevalence and mortality, combined with the lack of available treatment, in most cases. Exploring protective and risk factors associated with the development of neurological disorders will allow for improving prevention strategies. However, ascertaining neurological outcomes in population-based studies can be both complex and costly. The application of eHealth tools in research may contribute to lowering the costs and increase accessibility. The aim of this systematic review is to map existing eHealth tools assessing neurological signs and/or symptoms for epidemiological research., Methods: Four search engines (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus & EBSCOHost) were used to retrieve articles on the development, validation, or implementation of eHealth tools to assess neurological signs and/or symptoms. The clinical and technical properties of the software tools were summarised. Due to high numbers, only software tools are presented here., Findings: A total of 42 tools were retrieved. These captured signs and/or symptoms belonging to four neurological domains: cognitive function, motor function, cranial nerves, and gait and coordination. An additional fifth category of composite tools was added. Most of the tools were available in English and were developed for smartphone device, with the remaining tools being available as web-based platforms. Less than half of the captured tools were fully validated, and only approximately half were still active at the time of data collection., Interpretation: The identified tools often presented limitations either due to language barriers or lack of proper validation. Maintenance and durability of most tools were low. In this third installment of our four-part historical series, we evaluate contributions that shaped our understanding of heat and cold stress during occupational and athletic pursuits. Our first topic concerns how we tolerate, and sometimes fail to tolerate, exercise-heat stress. By 1900, physical activity with clothing- and climate-induced evaporative impediments led to an extraordinarily high incidence of heat stroke within the military. Fortunately, deep-body temperatures > 40 °C were not always fatal. Thirty years later, water immersion and patient treatments mimicking sweat evaporation were found to be effective, with the adage of cool first, transport later being adopted. We gradually acquired an understanding of thermoeffector function during heat storage, and learned about challenges to other regulatory mechanisms. In our second topic, we explore cold tolerance and intolerance. By the 1930s, hypothermia was known to reduce cutaneous circulation, particularly at the extremities, conserving body heat. Cold-induced vasodilatation hindered heat conservation, but it was protective. Increased metabolic heat production followed, driven by shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis, even during exercise and work. Physical endurance and shivering could both be compromised by hypoglycaemia. Later, treatments for hypothermia and cold injuries were refined, and the thermal after-drop was explained. In our final topic, we critique the numerous indices developed in attempts to numerically rate hot and cold stresses. The criteria for an effective thermal stress index were established by the 1930s. However, few indices satisfied those requirements, either then or now, and the surviving indices, including the unvalidated Wet-Bulb Globe-Thermometer index, do not fully predict thermal strain., (© 2023. Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a persistent inflammation of the sinonasal mucosa. CRSwNP treatments are associated with inconsistent efficacy and recurrence of symptoms. Dynorphin 1-17 (DYN 1-17) and its fragments have been shown to modulate the immune response in various inflammatory conditions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different pH and degrees of inflammation on DYN 1-17 metabolism in human CRSwNP tissues. DYN 1-17 was incubated with grade 3 and grade 4 inflamed tissues of CRSwNP patients at pH 5.5 and pH 7.4 over a range of incubation periods. The resulting fragments were identified using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) system coupled to quadrupole-time of flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry based on their accurate mass. The rate of DYN 1-17 fragmentation was slower at pH 5.5 in comparison to pH 7.4. The extent and rate of metabolism of DYN 1-17 were much lower in grade 3 inflamed tissue (31-32 fragments) than in grade 4 (34-41 fragments). N-Terminal fragments (DYN 1-15, 1-11, 1-10, and 1-6) were metabolized slower at pH 5.5 as compared to pH 7.4. DYN 1-12, 1-8, 2-10, 4-10, 5-10, and 8-14 were only observed under the inflammatory pH while DYN 5-17 and 6-17 were only identified upon incubation with grade 4 CRSwNP tissues. DYN 1-17 metabolism was significantly affected by the pH level and the severity of the inflammation of CRSwNP tissues, indicating the potential roles of DYN 1-17 and its fragments in modulating the inflammatory response and their avenue as therapeutics in future studies., (© 2023. As a central neurotransmitter, DA (dopamine) plays a vital part in human metabolism, and its accurate detection is of great significance in disease diagnosis. In this work, we used Cu/Co bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to construct novel nanocomposite coral-like CuCo 2 O 4 @AuNPs with strong peroxidase activity and electrochemical response. The coral-like CuCo 2 O 4 @AuNPs showed excellent peroxidase activity, and the K m value was as low as 0.358 mM. In the presence of H 2 O 2 , the colorless substrate 3,3',5,5', -tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) can be catalytically oxidized into a blue product. Simultaneously, coral-like CuCo 2 O 4 @AuNPs, as an electroactive substance, possess strong electrocatalytic activity, which enhances the electron-transfer rate and promotes excellent current response. In the presence of DA, coral-like CuCo 2 O 4 @AuNPs can catalyze the oxidation of DA to dopaquinone, which further enhances the electrochemical signal. In addition, DA captures hydroxyl radicals and inhibits the oxidation of TMB, resulting in an obvious color change (blue turns colorless) and realizing colorimetric detection with the naked eye. On this basis, we successfully established a dual-mode colorimetric/electrochemical sensor using coral-like CuCo 2 O 4 @AuNP nanocomposites as a dual-signal probe. Combining colorimetric and electrochemical detection, the sensor achieved a wide linear range (0-1 mM) and a low detection limit (0.07 μM) for DA concentration. It was also successfully used for the detection of DA in human serum and urine with good results. In this work, we are pleased to present for the first time a 3D-printed electrochemical device using a lab-made conductive filament based on graphite (Gr) and polylactic acid (PLA) polymer matrix for the simultaneous detection of amoxicillin (AMX) and paracetamol (PAR). The sensor was properly characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Compared to the commercial glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the superior performance of the 3D-Gr/PLA electrode was verified with a 3.8-fold more favored charge transfer. A differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method was proposed providing a linear working range of 4 to 12 μmol L -1 for both analytes and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.80 and 0.51 μmol L -1 for AMX and PAR, respectively. Additionally, repeatability studies (n = 5, RSD < 5.7%) indicated excellent precision, and recovery percentages ranging from 89 to 109% when applied to synthetic human urine, saliva, and plasma samples, attested to the accuracy of the method. The studies also indicate that the sensor does not suffer significant interference from common substances (antibiotics and biomarkers) present in the biological fluids, which makes it a promising analytical tool considering its low-cost, ease of manufacturing, robustness, and electrochemical performance., (© 2023. Synthesis of dual-state dual emitting metal-organic frameworks (DSDE-MOFs) is uncommon and challenging. Additionally, DSDE-MOFs can fulfil the expanding need for on-site detection due to their stability and self-reference for a variety of non-analyte variables. In the present work, a novel intrinsic DSDE of chemically engineered bi-ligand Eu-based MOF (UoZ-1) was designed. The prepared UoZ-1 spherical particles were small-sized around 10-12 nm and displayed blue (425 nm) and red fluorescence (620 nm) at both states, dispersed in liquid and in solid state, when excited at 250 nm. A ratiometry platform was developed since the red emission was quenched by the addition of folic acid and the blue emission was almost remained unaffected. In the fluorometric ratiometric-mode, a dynamic linear range was recorded from 10 to 200 µM with LOD about 0.4 µM. Visual-based detection with assistance of smartphone was developed for quantification based on RGB analysis using Color Grab App. In the visual-mode, LOD as small as 2.3 µM was recorded. By utilizing the intrinsic dual-emitting UoZ-1, highly stable, recyclable, sensitive, and selective on-site visual detection of folic acid can be achieved. Microfluidic point-of-care testing (POCT) chips are used to enable the mixing and reaction of small sample volumes, facilitating target molecule detection. Traditional methods for actuating POCT chips rely on external pumps or power supplies, which are complex and non-portable. The development of finger-actuated chips has reduced operational difficulty and improved portability, promoting the development of POCT chips. This paper reviews the significance, developments, and potential applications of finger-actuated POCT chips. Three methods for controlling the flow accuracy of finger-actuated chips are summarized: direct push, indirect control, and sample injection control method, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Meanwhile, a comprehensive analysis of multi-fluid driving modes is provided, categorizing them into single-push multi-driving and multi-push multi-driving modes. Furthermore, recent research breakthroughs in finger-actuated chips are thoroughly summarized, and their structures, driving, and detection methods are discussed. Finally, this paper discusses the driving performance of finger-actuated chips, the suitability of detection scenarios, and the compatibility with existing detection technologies. Metal ions have great significance for agricultural development, food safety, and human health. In turn, there exists an imperative need for the development of novel, sensitive, and reliable sensing techniques for various metal ions. Agricultural sensors for the diagnosis of both agricultural safety and nutritional health can establish quality and safety traceability systems of both agro-products and food to guarantee human health, even life safety. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are utilized widely for the design of diversified sensors due to their distinctive structural characteristics and extraordinary optical and electrical properties. To serve agricultural sensors better, this review is dedicated to providing a brief overview of the synthesis of MOFs, the modification of MOFs, the fabrication of MOF-based film electrodes, the applications of MOF-based agricultural sensors for metal ions, which are centered on electrochemical sensors and optical sensors, and current challenges of MOF-based agricultural sensors. Objectives: The need for prevention and management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has increased with the growing number of patients using antiresorptive agents. The scope of this systematic review (SR) was to determine whether the withdrawal of antiresorptive agents is necessary for tooth extractions in patients receiving each of the antiresorptive medications., Materials and Methods: The searches were performed using the MEDLINE databases. We selected SRs, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), prospective and retrospective non-randomized clinical (observational) studies, and case reports/case series in this order of preference., Results: We included one SR, one RCT, five observational studies, and three case reports. Meta-analyses were not conducted because the RCT had an extremely small sample size and the observational studies had different definitions of intervention and comparison that could not be integrated across studies. In this SR, no studies showed a benefit (i.e., a reduction in the incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw) of short-term withdrawal of antiresorptive agents for tooth extraction. Additionally, no studies examined the harm (i.e., an increase in femoral and vertebral fractures and skeletal-related events during bone metastasis) of withdrawal for tooth extraction., Conclusions: We were unable to determine whether withdrawal before and after tooth extraction is necessary with a high certainty of evidence. Monolayer g-C 3 N 4 -modified Au/Ag nanorods (g-C 3 N 4 /Au/Ag NRs) array is fabricated as a dual-function platform with high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) response and excellent photocatalytic degradation ability for bisphenol A (BPA) residues. FDTD simulation results of Au/Ag NRs proves that the electromagnetic field intensity is significantly enhanced at the gap of Ag NRs and Au NPs and the protrusion of Au NPs, which endows the arrays with excellent SERS activity. The arrays exhibit high sensitivity for rhodamine 6G (R6G) (LOD = 1.1 × 10 -11 mol/L) and high SERS enhancement (EF = 9.2 × 10 7 ). In addition, the g-C 3 N 4 /Au/Ag NRs could degrade ˃90% of BPA adsorbed on the substrate surface within 140 min under visible light irradiation, and maintains its SERS activity after repeated use for 4 times. The dual-function platform with high SERS response and excellent recycling capability is proved to be reliable and is very promising for monitoring of BPA residues in food., (© 2023. Amino acid L-arginine (Arg), usually presented in food products and biological liquids, can serve both as a useful indicator of food quality and an important biomarker in medicine. The biosensors based on Arg-selective enzymes are the most promising devices for Arg assay. In this research, three types of amperometric biosensors have been fabricated. They exploit arginine oxidase (ArgO), recombinant arginase I (ARG)/urease, and arginine deiminase (ADI) coupled with the ammonium-chelating redox-active nanoparticles. Cadmium-copper nanoparticles (nCdCu) as the most effective nanochelators were used for the development of ammonium chemosensors and enzyme-coupled Arg biosensors. The fabricated enzyme/nCdCu-containing bioelectrodes show wide linear ranges (up to 200 µM), satisfactory storage stabilities (14 days), and high sensitivities (A⋅M -1 ⋅m -2 ) to Arg: 1650, 1700, and 4500 for ADI-, ArgO- and ARG/urease-based sensors, respectively. All biosensors have been exploited to estimate Arg content in commercial juices. The obtained data correlate well with the values obtained by the reference method. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a range of unique bioplastics that are bio-based and biodegradable. PLA is currently driving market expansion for lactic acid (LA) due to its high demand as a building block in production. One of the most practical and environmentally benign techniques for synthesising PLA is through enzymatic polymerisation of microbial LA monomers. However, microbial LA fermentation does have some limitations. Firstly, it requires the use of a nutritionally rich medium. Secondly, LA production can be disrupted by bacteriophage infection or other microorganisms. Lastly, the yield can be low due to the formation of by-products through heterofermentative pathway. Considering the potential use of PLA as a replacement for conventional petrochemical-based polymers in industrial applications, researchers are focused on exploring the diversity of LA-producing microorganisms from various niches. Their goal is to study the functional properties of these microorganisms and their ability to produce industrially valuable metabolites. Mn 3 O 4 nanozyme with good oxidase-like activity was successfully synthesized. The prepared Mn 3 O 4 nanozyme can directly and effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate green-blue-colored ox-TMB. Creatinine exhibits distinct inhibition effect on Mn 3 O 4 nanozyme-catalyzed TMB colorimetric reaction system, leading to obvious color fading and absorbance intensity decrease of the reaction system. Furthermore, interference from uric acid can be effectively eliminated by regulating the pH of TMB-Mn 3 O 4 colorimetric reaction system to pH 2.0. Then, a simple and bioenzyme-free colorimetric assay for the determination of creatinine was developed based on TMB-Mn 3 O 4 colorimetric reaction. The linear detection range is from 100 to 800 μM and from 1 to 20 mM. The lowest limit of detection is 35.3 μM. Satisfied results are obtained for the determination of creatinine in real urine and sweat samples. The miniprotein binder TRI2-2 was employed as an antibody alternative to build a single antibody-coupled TRI2-2 based gold nanoparticle-based lateral flow immunoassay (AT-GLFIA) biosensor. The biosensor provides high specificity and affinity binding between TRI2-2 and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern (VOCs) spike antigen receptor binding domain (S-RBD). It also enables rapid testing of wild-type (WT), B.1.1.7 (Alpha), B.1.351 (Beta), B.1.617.2 (Delta), P.1 (Gamma), and B.1.1.529 (Omicron) SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD and is at least ~ 16-fold more sensitive than conventional antibody pair-based GLFIA (AP-GLFIA). Besides, we developed a wireless micro-electrochemical assay (WMECA) biosensor based on the TRI2-2, which demonstrates an excellent VOCs testing capability at the pg mL -1 level. Purpose: The calculation of aggregated composite measures is a widely used strategy to reduce the amount of data on hospital report cards. Therefore, this study aims to elicit and compare preferences of both patients as well as referring physicians regarding publicly available hospital quality information METHODS: Based on systematic literature reviews as well as qualitative analysis, two discrete choice experiments (DCEs) were applied to elicit patients' and referring physicians' preferences. The DCEs were conducted using a fractional factorial design. Statistical data analysis was performed using multinomial logit models RESULTS: Apart from five identical attributes, one specific attribute was identified for each study group, respectively. Overall, 322 patients (mean age 68.99) and 187 referring physicians (mean age 53.60) were included. Our models displayed significant coefficients for all attributes (p < 0.001 each). Among patients, "Postoperative complication rate" (20.6%; level range of 1.164) was rated highest, followed by "Mobility at hospital discharge" (19.9%; level range of 1.127), and ''The number of cases treated" (18.5%; level range of 1.045). In contrast, referring physicians valued most the ''One-year revision surgery rate'' (30.4%; level range of 1.989), followed by "The number of cases treated" (21.0%; level range of 1.372), and "Postoperative complication rate" (17.2%; level range of 1.123) CONCLUSION: We determined considerable differences between both study groups when calculating the relative value of publicly available hospital quality information. Electrochemically deposited bimetallic copper-gold nanoparticles on indium tin oxide (Cu-AuNPs on ITO) glass are demonstrated to be a sensitive and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform. An optimal signal enhancement with reasonably good degree of homogeneity was obtained by tuning the deposition parameters of the electrochemical setup. For Raman active analytes such as malachite green (MG) and rhodamine 6G (R6G), the developed SERS platform yields a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.75 nM. The usability of the proposed SERS platform has been realized through detection of two important antibiotics namely sulfamethoxazole (SFZ) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) commonly used in egg farms. A novel determination method for protein biomarkers based on on-chip flow rate measurement was developed using a microchip with organic photodiodes (OPDs). This quantitative method is based on the flow rate measurement of an ink solution pushed out by oxygen gas generated through catalase reaction. The amount of oxygen gas generated in the sample reservoir is dependent on the concentration of the analyte; therefore, the flow rate of the ink solution is also dependent on the concentration of the analyte. The concentration of the analyte can thus be estimated by measurement of the ink solution flow rate. The ink solution flow rate was estimated by measuring the migration time of the ink solution between two points using two OPDs placed below the microchannel. The principle of this method was demonstrated by the measurement of catalase using the microchip. In addition, the developed method was applied to the determination of C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of inflammation, based on a catalase-linked immunosorbent assay (C-LISA). The limit of detection for CRP was 0.20 µg/mL. The method was also applied to the determination of CRP in human serum, and the quantitative values obtained by this method were in excellent agreement with those obtained by the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Laccase is an enzyme known for its eco-friendly uses in environmental cleanup and biotechnology. However, it has limitations such as low stability, high cost, and complex recycling. So, there is a need for laccase mimics that can effectively imitate its properties. Herein, we created copper formate-lysine nanoparticles (Cuf-Lys) that mimic laccase's activity. The developed Cuf-Lys demonstrated remarkable polyphenol oxidase-like activity, stability, and recyclability, making them suitable for the fabrication of efficient colorimetric sensors for the detection of epinephrine. These sensors had a specific response and could accurately measure epinephrine concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 50 μM, with a detection limit as low as 1 μM. Furthermore, the biosensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity when applied to the detection of rutin. The limit of detection for rutin was determined to be 0.16 μM while in the linear concentration range of 0.25 to 150.0 μM. In this, the second of four historical reviews on human thermoregulation during exercise, we examine the research techniques developed by our forebears. We emphasise calorimetry and thermometry, and measurements of vasomotor and sudomotor function. Since its first human use (1899), direct calorimetry has provided the foundation for modern respirometric methods for quantifying metabolic rate, and remains the most precise index of whole-body heat exchange and storage. Its alternative, biophysical modelling, relies upon many, often dubious assumptions. Thermometry, used for >300 y to assess deep-body temperatures, provides only an instantaneous snapshot of the thermal status of tissues in contact with any thermometer. Seemingly unbeknownst to some, thermal time delays at some surrogate sites preclude valid measurements during non-steady state conditions. To assess cutaneous blood flow, immersion plethysmography was introduced (1875), followed by strain-gauge plethysmography (1949) and then laser-Doppler velocimetry (1964). Those techniques allow only local flow measurements, which may not reflect whole-body blood flows. Sudomotor function has been estimated from body-mass losses since the 1600s, but using mass losses to assess evaporation rates requires precise measures of non-evaporated sweat, which are rarely obtained. Hygrometric methods provide data for local sweat rates, but not local evaporation rates, and most local sweat rates cannot be extrapolated to reflect whole-body sweating. Background: Autonomic dysfunctions are prevalent in several cerebellar disorders, but they have not been systematically investigated in spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Studies investigating autonomic deficits in SCAs are fragmented, with each one focusing on different autonomic dysfunctions and different SCA subtypes., Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess the presence of autonomic dysfunctions in various SCAs. PubMed served as the primary database, and the Rayyan web application was employed for study screening., Results: We identified 46 articles investigating at least one autonomic function in patients with SCA. The results were analyzed and categorized based on the genetic subtype of SCA, thereby characterizing the specific autonomic deficits associated with each subtype., Conclusion: This review confirms the presence of autonomic dysfunctions in various genetic subtypes of SCA, underscoring the cerebellum's role in the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Metal/metal oxide nanoparticles have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their outstanding features, including optical and catalytic properties, as well as their excellent conductivity. The implementation of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, combined with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) has paved the way for a new generation of building blocks to engineer and enhance the fascinating features of advanced sensors. This review critically evaluates the impact of combining metal/metal oxide nanoparticles with MIPs in sensors. It covers synthesis strategies, advantages of coupling these materials with MIPs, and addresses questions about the selectivity of these hybrid materials. In the end, the current challenges and future perspectives of this field are discussed, with a particular focus on the potential applications of these hybrid composites in the sensor field. Self-powered immunosensors (SPIs) based on enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) have low sensitivity and poor stability due to the high impedance of the immune sandwich and the vulnerability of enzymes to environmental factors. Here, we applied the Faraday cage-type sensing mode on a hybrid biofuel cell (HBFC)-based SPI for the first time, which exhibited high sensitivity and stability. Cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1) was used as a model analyte. Au nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide (Au-rGO) composite was used as the supporting matrix for immunoprobe immobilized with detection antibody and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH), also the builder for Faraday cage structure on the bioanode in the presence of antigen. After the combination of immunoprobe, antigen, and the antibody on the bioanode, the Faraday cage was constructed in case the AuNP-rGO was applied as a conductive cage for electron transfer from GDH to the bioanode without passing through the poorly conductive protein. With the assistance of the Faraday cage structure, the impedance of the bioanode decreased significantly from 4000 to 300 Ω, representing a decline of over 90%. The sensitivity of the SPI, defined as the changes of open circuit voltage (OCV) per unit concentration of the CYFRA 21-1, was 68 mV [log (ng mL -1 )] -1 . In addition, Fe-N-C was used as an inorganic cathode material to replace enzyme for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which endowed the sensor with 4-week long-term stability. Recent research has indicated that the cerebellum is engaged in language functions, yet the role of the cerebellum in lexical-semantic memory is poorly understood. In a double-blind randomized controlled experiment, we therefore targeted the cerebellum by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to assess and compare the contribution of the cerebellar processing to automatic and controlled retrieval of words in healthy adults (n = 136). Anodal cerebellar tDCS facilitated retrieval of semantically related words in free-associative chains, which was not due to a non-specific acceleration of processing speed. The stimulation had no influence on controlled word retrieval that employed inhibition or switching. The effect of cathodal tDCS was opposite to the anodal stimulation, but statistically non-significant. Our data show that the cerebellum is engaged extracting associative information from the system of semantic representations, established and strengthened/automated by learning, and indicates a domain-general role of this structure in automation of behavior, cognition and language., (© 2023. Developing an intelligent, sensitive, and visual strategy for quickly identifying anthrax biomarkers is crucial for ensuring food safety and preventing disease outbreaks. Herein, a smartphone-integrated ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform based on bimetallic metal-organic framework (Eu x /Tb 1-x -MOF) nanowires was designed for specific recognition of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (DPA, anthrax biomarker). The Eu x /Tb 1-x -MOF was prepared by coordinating Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ with BBDC ligands, which exhibited a uniform fibrous morphology and dual-emission fluorescence at 543 and 614 nm. After the introduction of DPA, the red emission at 614 nm displayed obvious fluorescence quenching, while the green emission at 543 nm was gradually enhanced. The ratiometric sensing offered a wide linear equation in the range of 0.06-15 µg/mL and a low detection limit (LOD) of 20.69 ng/mL. Furthermore, a portable smartphone installing the color recognition application can achieve sensitive, real-time, and visual detection of DPA. A dual-mode pH sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with the source of o-phenylenediamine and tryptophan has been constructed. Under the stimulation of pH, the N-CDs exhibited prominent both color and fluorescence changes, leading to the rarely discovered colorimetric and fluorescent dual-readouts for the evaluation of pH. The mathematic relationship was established between pH and fluorescence intensity of N-CDs, and between pH and the UV-Vis absorbance ratio at 630 nm and 488 nm of N-CDs, respectively, over a quite broad pH range of 2.2 to 12.0. Multiple techniques are used to explore the dual-mode pH-responsive mechanism, and the preliminary explanation is put forward. The experimental results show that the N-CDs have visualized pH sensing applicability for actual samples, including various water samples and HeLa cell. Furthermore, the N-CD ink is developed for successful information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay (LFA), one tool in point of care testing (POCT) systems for breast cancer, has attracted attention because it is quick, simple, and convenient. However, samples and the constituent material exhibit autofluorescence in the visible region, which is a very large obstacle in the development of fluorescent LFAs. The autofluorescence of biological samples is scarcely found in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) range and samples scatter and absorb less NIR-II light than visible light. Here, we report an NIR-II QD-LFA platform using the NIR-II fluorescent Ag 2 Se quantum dots (QDs) with 1020 nm emission encapsulated into polystyrene beads as fluorescent probes. The NIR-II LFA platform was established to detect breast cancer tumour markers (CEA and CA153) within 15 min with a low limit of detection (CEA: 0.768 ng mL -1 , CA153: 1.192 U mL -1 ), high recoveries (93.7% ~ 108.8%), and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 10%. This study demonstrated the potential of NIR-II Ag 2 Se polystyrene beads as a fluorescent probe in LFA for rapid and accurate identification of biomarkers. Microfluidic cotton thread-based electroanalytical devices (μTEDs) are analytical systems with attractive features such as spontaneous passive flow, low cost, minimal waste production, and good sensitivity. Currently, sample injection in µTEDs is performed by hand using manual micropipettes, which have drawbacks such as inconstant speed and position, dependence of skilled analysts, and need of physical effort of operator during prolonged times, leading to poor reproducibility and risk of strain injury. As an alternative to these inconveniences, we propose, for the first time, the use of electronic micropipettes to carry out automated injections in µTEDs. This new approach avoids all disadvantages of manual injections, while also improving the performance, experience, and versatility of µTEDs. The platform developed here is composed by three 3D-printed electrodes (detector) attached to a 3D-printed platform containing an adjustable holder that keeps the electronic pipette in the same x/y/z position. As a proof-of-concept, both injection modes (manual and electronic) were compared using three model analytes (nitrite, paracetamol, and 5-hydroxytryptophan) on µTED with amperometric detection. As result, improved analytical performance (limits of detection between 2.5- and 5-fold lower) was obtained when using electronic injections, as well as better repeatability/reproducibility and higher analytical frequencies. In addition, the determination of paracetamol in urine samples suggested better precision and accuracy for automated injection. Thus, electronic injection is a great advance and changes the state-of-art of µTEDs, mainly considering the use of more modern and versatile electronic pipettes (wider range of pre-programmed modes), which can lead to the development of even more automated systems., (© 2023. A triangular-shaped flat plastic substrate probe was prepared for direct electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) for analysis of untreated chemical and biological samples including liquids (Met-Arg-Phe-Ala peptide, reserpine, and dodecyl aldehyde), solids (biological samples, traditional Chinese medicine), and powders (roasted coffee, rhizoma coptidis, lotus plumule, and Schisandra sphenanthera). Quantitative analysis of reserpine in water yielded a detection limit of 1 ng mL -1 , dynamic response range within 1-500 ng mL -1 , and linearity of signal response ˃0.9925. Compared to the conventional capillary ESI, this plastic probe ESI offers lower cost of analysis (US $0.0056 per probe), higher sensitivity, lower sample consumption, longer signal duration (>6 min), better reproducibility, signal stability, and higher speed of analysis (<10 s per sample, including sample loading). In this study, representative urban and peri-urban Indian food baskets have been studied for the presence of toxic and essential elements. The concentration of target toxic and essential elements was used to estimate dietary intakes (EDIs) and health risks. Across all food matrices, toxic elements like Cd and Pb were dominant. The highest concentrations of the target elements were found in vegetables, with Cd, Pb, and Ni being beyond permissible limits of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health organization (0.05 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg, and 1.5 mg/kg, respectively) in okra, spinach, and cauliflower. The sum of concentrations of the toxic elements (As, Ni, Hg, Cr, Cd, Pb) in vegetables had a range of 0.54-12.08 mg/kg, the highest sum was found in spinach (median 12.08 mg/kg), followed by okra (median 1.68 mg/kg). The EDI was observed for vegetables with a contribution as high as 92% for Cd. Dairy products were found with the highest loading for Ni with a dietary intake of 3.1 mg/kg/day for adults and twice as much for children. Carcinogenic risk for Ni was the highest and found above the threshold for all food categories, as was the case with As. The discovery of novel chemical entities targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) is usually guided by their receptor affinity. However, traditional affinity assay methods and hit identification procedures are usually laborious and expensive. In this work, the type-2 vasopressin receptor (V 2 R) was chosen as a prototypical GPCR. Membrane fragments from cells highly expressing SNAP-V 2 R were immobilized on the surface of a glass microfiber (GMF) coated with O 6 -benzylguanine (BG). This was achieved by transferring the benzyl group of BG to the active site of the SNAP-tag through a nucleophilic substitution reaction. As a result, a biofilm called SNAP-V 2 R@GMF-BG was produced that showed good specificity and stability. The adsorption ratio for each V 2 R ligand treated with SNAP-V 2 R@GMF-BG was determined by HPLC and exhibited a good linear correlation with the K i value determined by displacement assays. Furthermore, a K i prediction assay was performed by comparing the data with that generated by a homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) assay. SNAP-V 2 R@GMF-BG was also used to screen hit compounds from natural products. After SNAP-V 2 R@GMF-BG was incubated with the total extract, the ligand that binds to V 2 R could be separated and subjected to LC‒MS analysis for identification. Baicalein was screened from Clerodendranthus spicatus and verified as a potential V 2 R antagonist. In 2017, one of us reviewed advances in epilepsy (Manford in J Neurol 264:1811-1824, 2017). The current paper brings that review up to date and gives a slight change in emphasis. Once again, the story is of evolution rather than revolution. In recognition that most of our current medications act on neurotransmitters or ion channels, and not on the underlying changes in connectivity and pathways, they have been renamed as antiseizure (ASM) medications rather than antiepileptic drugs. Cenobamate is the one newly licensed medication for broader use in focal epilepsy but there have been a number of developments for specific disorders. We review new players and look forward to new developments in the light of evolving underlying science. We look at teratogenicity; old villains and new concerns in which clinicians play a vital role in explaining and balancing the risks. Medical treatment of status epilepticus, long without evidence, has benefitted from high-quality trials to inform practice; like buses, several arriving at once. Surgical treatment continues to be refined with improvements in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients, especially with new imaging techniques. Alternatives including stereotactic radiotherapy have received further focus and targets for palliative stimulation techniques have grown in number. Individuals' autonomy and quality of life continue to be the subject of research with refinement of what clinicians can do to help persons with epilepsy (PWE) achieve control. This includes seizure management but extends to broader considerations of human empowerment, needs and desires, which may be aided by emerging technologies such as seizure detection devices. The conjunction fallacy is a classical judgment bias that was argued to be a robust cognitive illusion insensitive to the positive effect of incentivization. We conducted a meta-analysis of the literature (n = 3276) and found that although most studies did not report a significant effect of incentivization, the results across studies show a significant positive effect for incentivization, d = 0.19, with an odds ratio of 1.40 for answering correctly when incentivized. There was no moderating effect of payoff size despite the differences in incentive value between studies. Additionally, the effect was relatively smaller when examining absolute differences in the probability of correct judgment instead of odds ratios, suggesting that it may be partly driven by studies with low baseline performance. These findings join those of other judgment-bias studies to suggest a small but nevertheless robust debiasing effect of incentivization., (© 2023. Peroxidase mimicking Fe 3 O 4 @Chitosan (Fe 3 O 4 @Chi) nanozyme was synthesized and used for high-sensitive enzyme-free colorimetric detection of H 2 O 2 . The nanozyme was characterized in comparison with  Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis. The catalytic performance of Fe 3 O 4 @Chi nanozyme was first evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. Unlike Fe 3 O 4 NPs, Fe 3 O 4 @Chi nanozyme exhibited an intrinsic peroxidase activity with a detection limit of 69 nM. Next, the nanozyme was applied to a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) and colorimetric analysis was performed at varying concentrations of H 2 O 2 using a machine learning-based smartphone app called "Hi-perox Sens++ ." The app with machine learning classifiers made the system user-friendly as well as more robust and adaptive against variation in illumination and camera optics. In order to train various machine learning classifiers, the images of the µPADs were taken at 30 s and 10 min by four smartphone brands under seven different illuminations. According to the results, linear discriminant analysis exhibited the highest classification accuracy (98.7%) with phone-independent repeatability at t = 30 s and the accuracy was preserved for 10 min. Microfluidic immunoassay devices are a promising technology that can quickly detect biomarkers with high sensitivity. Recently, many studies implementing this technology on paper substrates have been proposed for improving cost and user-friendliness. However, these studies have identified problems with the large volume of sample required, low sensitivity, and a lack of quantitative accuracy and precision. In this paper, we report a novel structure implemented as a cellulosic material-based microchannel device capable of quantitative immunoassay using small sample volumes. We fabricated microfluidic channels between a transparent cellophane film and water-resistant paper to facilitate loading of small-volume samples and reagents, with a 40-μm-wide immunoreaction matrix constructed in the center of the microchannel using highly precise photolithography. A fluorescence sandwich immunoassay for C-reactive protein (CRP) was successfully implemented that required only a 1-μL sample volume and a 20-min reaction time. We confirmed that the limit of detection of the device was 10-20 ng/mL with a coefficient of variation under 5.6%, which is a performance level comparable to conventional plastic-based human CRP enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. We expect that such devices will lead to the elimination of large amounts of medical waste from the use of ubiquitous diagnostics, a result that is consistent with environmental sustainability goals., (© 2022. Fast, simple, and low-cost on-site visualized detection of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is in great demand since phosphate is the major reason of eutrophication. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe composed by green carbon dots (GCDs) and red carbon dots (RCDs) has been established for high-sensitivity and selective sensing of Pi. A trend of color change from red to green is observed for the detection of Pi under ultraviolet light and the detection limit is 0.09 μM in the range of 0 to 55 μM. Fluorescent test paper prepared from the probe solution was successfully applied to semi-quantitative visual detection of Pi in real-world water and soil samples, which shows great real-world application potentials., (© 2022. Biosensors have been widely used for bacteria determination with great success. However, the "lock-and-key" methodology used by biosensors to identify bacteria has a significant limitation: it can only detect one species of bacteria. In recent years, optical (fluorescent and colorimetric) sensor arrays are gradually gaining attention from researchers as a new type of biosensor. They can acquire multiple features of a target simultaneously, form a feature pattern, and determine the bacteria species with the help of pattern recognition/machine learning algorithms. Previous reviews in this area have focused on the interaction between the sensor array and bacteria or the materials used to make the sensors. This review, on the other hand, will provide researchers with a better understanding of the field by discussing fluorescent and colorimetric sensor arrays based on the mechanism of optical signal generation. These sensor arrays will be compared based on the identified species. Finally, we will discuss the limitations of these sensor arrays and explore possible solutions., (© 2023.
