What accounts for the resurgence of religion in Muslim countries that pursue strict secularization policies? Theories of religious resurgence have emphasized secular differentiation, religious growth, and pietist agency as animating sources behind politically engaged religions. Extending this work, I advance a typology of strategies oppositional actors employ to produce and sustain religious politics. I ground my approach in the study of Islamic resurgence in Turkey during the twentieth century. Drawing on published primary sources, secondary historiography, and multi-sited fieldwork, the analysis shows that Turkish Islamists spearheaded successful resurgence not only by capitalizing on exogenous "opportunities" that punctuated the "repressive" pathway but, more importantly, by pursuing endogenous institutional change. Even though secularizing agents restricted the religious field's autonomy, dissidents avoided open confrontation with the state. Instead, they positioned themselves within official institutions (embedding, layering), changed their logic (conversion), and supplemented these institutions with alternative ones (substitution). As a result, religious actors turned Islam into an ideological counterattack on the regime's secular institutions. MEAM1 (Middle East-Asia Minor 1) and MED (Mediterranean), two cryptic species of the Bemisia tabaci species complex, are highly destructive herbivores worldwide. Attack by herbivorous insects often induces plant defense responses that deter herbivores, recruit natural enemies, or warn other plants of possible herbivore attack. However, recent studies found that herbivores can manipulate and suppress plant defenses for their own benefit. These responses, which differ depending on the herbivore and the plant species, may mediate the preference and performance of later-arriving con- and heterospecific herbivores that attack the same plant. Here, we found that MEAM1 whiteflies preferred to settle and oviposit on MED-infested pepper and avoided conspecific-infested pepper plants. In contrast, MED whiteflies preferred to settle and oviposit on non-infested rather than on MEAM1-infested pepper. MEAM1 infestation significantly increased the contents of JA in pepper plants, which coincided with the increased expression of the following genes in the JA biosynthesis pathway: FAD, LOX6, OPR3, and PDF1.2. MED infestation significantly increased the contents of ABA in pepper plants and reduced the expression of PR1 and NPR1 in the SA biosynthesis pathway. Although MEAM1 infestation increased the transcript levels of C4H, 4CL1, CHS, and CHI3 in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, total phenol levels did not increase. The reduction of the total phenols in pepper previously infested by MED, probably contributed to the settling and oviposition preference of the later-arriving heterospecific MEAM1. Overall, these results demonstrate that previous infestation by MEAM1 and MED whiteflies induces different responses in pepper plants that shape the host preference and performance of the later-arriving con- and heterospecific whiteflies. The transport of dust from the Middle East and African deserts affects European and Asian countries at certain times of the year, especially in spring. Turkey is one of these countries, and many dust storm events have occurred in the first half of 2022, which have affected especially the southeastern part of Anatolia. Apart from threatening human health, dust and sand particles, which are described as particulate matter, may possibly affect Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. The purpose of this research is to look into the effects of particulate matter less than 10 μm (PM10) on GPS-estimated precipitable water vapor (PWV). Hourly PM10 and PWV data between April 1, 2022, and June 10, 2022, were utilized. Four different extreme dust concentration events and a benchmark period were investigated separately. Hourly data results showed that correlation coefficients vary according to events, wind directions, and the distance between GPS stations and air quality monitoring stations. Also, other meteorological parameters that affect PWV, such as temperature, relative humidity, and pressure, were investigated and found to have no anomalies that could affect PWV. Hourly and daily correlation coefficients in the benchmark period were significantly lower compared to dusty days, which indicates that there is no real correlation between PM10 and PWV concentrations in clear air conditions. Only with the increase of PM10 to extreme levels does the relationship show itself. Therefore, this study suggests that for all GPS applications, such as positioning or PWV estimation, PM10 concentrations should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two cryptic species of the Bemisia tabaci species complex, MEAM1 (Middle East-Asia Minor 1) and MED (Mediterranean), are highly destructive herbivores. Attack by herbivorous insects often induces defense responses in plants, including the accumulation of toxic secondary metabolites, the synthesis of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) and defensive proteins, and the release of volatile organic compounds that attract natural enemies. These defense responses, which often differ depending on the herbivore, may affect the preference and performance of later-arriving con- and heterospecific whiteflies that attack the same plant. In the present study, we found that MEAM1 whiteflies preferred settling and ovipositing on non-infested and MED-infested cabbage over MEAM1-infested cabbage plants, but that MED whiteflies showed no significant difference in settling or oviposition preference among non-infested, MEAM1-infested, and MED-infested plants. MEAM1 infestation increased the contents of total phenols and flavonoids in cabbage, which coincided with the increased expression of the following genes in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway: PAL2, C4H, and 4CL. Soluble protein contents were also markedly higher in the MEAM1-infested cabbage plants than in the non-infested and MED-infested cabbage plants. Overall, these results demonstrate that previous infestation by MEAM1 and MED whiteflies induced defense responses in cabbage plants that had different effects on the host preference and performance of later-arriving con- and heterospecific whiteflies. The first Neolithic settlements in Southwest Asia began with a dual commitment to plant cultivation and a sedentary lifestyle. The benefits that foragers-turned-farmers gained from this commitment came with some inescapable constraints, setting new evolutionary pathways for human social and economic activities. We explore the developmental process at the early Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Aşıklı Höyük in central Anatolia (Turkey), specifically the relationship between internal dynamics and external influences in early village formation. Feedback mechanisms inherent to the community were responsible for many of the unique developments there, including domestication of a variant of free-threshing wheat and the early evolution of caprine management, which gave rise to domesticated stock. Gradual change was the rule at Aşıklı, yet the cumulative transformations in architecture, settlement layout, and caprine management were great. The many strands of evidence reveal a largely local (endemic) evolution of an early Pre-Pottery Neolithic community. Studies on phylogeography and population structure of Ixodes ricinus have been carried out in Europe for decades, but the number of specimens from the Middle East included in these analyses is relatively small, despite the wide distribution of the species in this area. This study aimed to clarify the phylogenetic positions of I. ricinus from Turkey as well as to investigate the presence of Ixodes inopinatus in Anatolia. For this purpose, one mitochondrial (mt 16S rDNA) and one nuclear gene (defensin) were used to generate molecular data from I. ricinus samples, which were collected from 17 locations across the species' distributional range in Turkey. Bayesian inference was used to investigate phylogenetic relationships. Globally, the mt 16S rDNA lineages correspond to the lineages revealed by defensin; I. ricinus and I. inopinatus sequences clustered separately. However, a discordant genetic pattern was observed between the phylogenetic position of turkish I. ricinus revealed by nuclear versus mitochondrial genes. All Turkish haplotypes of mt 16SrDNA clustered with I. ricinus samples from Europe, which might be the result of extensive gene flow between populations of Europe and the Middle East. On the other hand, a sample from Thrace Region grouped within I. inopinatus clade. Thus, the occurrence of I. inopinatus in Turkey was demonstrated for the first time using molecular data. Moreover, four individuals were found to be heterozygous for the defensin. Detecting the number of invasions is crucial to understanding the process of invasion and perhaps the success of some invasive pest species. Detecting multiple invasions can be difficult using partial mitochondrial COI, however, due to lack of variation. To examine the post-invasion history of Bemisia argentifolii (also called B. tabaci Middle East-Asia Minor 1 and B biotype) in Australia and test for the presence of spatial genetic structure, we developed microsatellite loci based on the whole-genome sequence of B. argentifolii. We investigated gene flow among populations of B. argentifolii collected between 1995 and 2018, covering the time since the first detection in Australia (1994). Structure plots and PCAs of the microsatellite data revealed three clusters in 1995–1996, indicating multiple introductions. Since then, B. argentifolii has become a widespread single genetic population across the continent, with no geographic genetic structure in recent samples. The haplotype network generated from mitochondrial COI shows that Australian B. argentifolii mostly has the same haplotype as the invasive populations established elsewhere around the world. Analysis of the more recent samples showed that gene flow was high across regions, indicating movement of B. argentifolii across Australia is currently extensive. Undesirable traits and pathogens not already present in Australia, including insecticide resistance and plant viruses, could arrive with any new introductions of B. argentifolii and are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to contain. Studies of the origins of agriculture in the Near East have revealed that the eight plant species known as "Founder Crops", i.e. emmer, einkorn, barley, lentils, peas, chickpeas, bitter vetch and flax, derived from annual self-pollinating wild predecessors, were all domesticated in roughly the same period. Recent research however has prompted new debate on whether there are really only eight "Founder Crops" species in the Near East. Interest has focused on "new" glume wheat (NGW), a Triticum species identified for the first time by de Moulins at the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) site of Caferhöyük in Eastern Anatolia. After this identification, similar remains were identified in Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in Greece and were named "new" glume wheat. Recently, the remains of NGW spikelet bases have been documented in two settlements in Turkey: Yumuktepe (Cilicia) and Yenikapı (eastern Thrace). The remains of NGW spikelet bases from these two settlements underwent morphobiometric analysis in order to contribute to discussion of the morphological character of NGW spikelets. In addition, a whole NGW spikelet from Yenikapı was analysed, contributing to discussion of the morphological features of NGW caryopses. At the same time, these attestations open up new debate not only on its large-scale presence in Anatolia but also its origins and the ways and routes by which it spread to other regions. In this study, the two basic models of domestication and geographical expansion, i.e. the "rapid transition model" and the "protracted model", are assessed on the basis of the new evidence of NGW in Turkey and the relationship with other European sites where it is attested.
