High-pressure and ultra-high-pressure metamorphic terrains display an internal architecture consisting of a pile (or stack) of several coherent tectonic thrust sheets or units. Their identification is fundamental for understanding the scale and mechanisms active during subduction and exhumation of these crustal slices. This study investigates the geometry of the northern Dora-Maira Massif and the kinematics of the major tectonic boundaries, combining field and geochronological data. The tectonic stack of the northern Dora-Maira Massif comprises the following units. The lowermost unit (the Pinerolo Unit) is mainly characterized by Upper Carboniferous fluvio-lacustrine (meta-)sediments. The Pinerolo unit is overthrust by a pre-Carboniferous basement. The latter is subdivided in two tectonic units (the Chasteiran and Muret Units) with different Alpine metamorphism (ultra-high-pressure and high-pressure, respectively). The pre-Carboniferous basement of the Muret Unit is thicker than previously thought for two main reasons. Firstly, some paragneisses, traditionally assumed to be Carboniferous and/or Permian in age, display detrital zircon ages indicating a main source at about 600 Ma. Secondly, three samples of the Granero Orthogneiss, previously assumed to be a Permian intrusive body, have provided zircon U–Pb ages of 447 ± 1 Ma, 456 ± 2 Ma and 440 ± 2 Ma, indicating a late Ordovician or early Silurian age for the protoliths. The uppermost unit (the Serre Unit) comprises porphyritic (meta-) volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks dated to the Permian (271 ± 2 Ma), on top of which remnants of the Mesozoic cover is preserved. Detailed mapping of an area about 140 km2 shows that (i) the ultra-high pressure Chasteiran Unit is localized at the boundary between the Pinerolo and Muret Units, (ii) the Granero Orthogneiss may be considered as the mylonitic sole of the Muret Unit, characterized by a top-to-W sense of shear, and (iii) the contact between the Muret and Serre Units displays ductile-to brittle structures (La Fracho Shear Zone), indicating a top-to-the-NW displacement of the hangingwall with respect to the footwall. A final episode of brittle faulting, cutting across the nappe stack (the Trossieri Fault), indicates an extensional stage in the core of the Alpine belt, as previously documented in more external zones. High-grade epithermal Au–Ag veins of the Vodorazdelnaya district in far eastern Russia are hosted by Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks of the Tytylveem belt. The largest deposit is Zone 37, a 1-km long, northeast-striking vein that is up to 35-m wide, containing at least 32 t Au. The main shoot consists of crustiform—colloform banded quartz-chalcedony-adularia-sulfide veins, of low-sulfidation style. The vein is cut by late-mineral rhyolite sills and dikes. Zone 37 vein is dated at 117 ± 2 Ma, overlapping within error with the cross-cutting rhyolites (121–119 Ma) and with intrusions of the nearby Ilirney granitic pluton (119–117 Ma). The volcanic host rocks are dated at 121–115 Ma. At September Northeast, 15 km west-northwest of Zone 37, mineralisation consists of veins up to 4 m wide, with crustiform banded quartz ± chalcedony ± adularia ± chlorite, and Zn-Pb-Cu sulfides, of intermediate sulfidation style, in a 1-km-long, north-northeast striking trend. High grades are associated with gold dendrites in fine-grained quartz bands and with minor late-stage tellurides. The veins were disrupted by intrusion of rhyolite dikes and associated phreatic breccias. Some breccias host mineralisation as vein clasts and minor matrix sulfides. The Tytylveem belt is preserved below a regional unconformity that forms the base to the overlying Late Cretaceous (106–77 Ma) Okhotsk-Chukotka Volcanic Belt (OCVB). Intrusive rocks attributed to OCVB magmatism were emplaced at about 96 Ma and are associated with overprinting hydrothermal alteration, sub-economic veins and thermal resetting of some vein adularia ages at Zone 37, to 91–97 Ma. We apply X-ray ptycho-tomography to perform high-resolution, non-destructive, three-dimensional (3D) imaging of Fe-rich inclusions in paleomagnetically relevant materials (zircon single crystals from the Bishop Tuff ignimbrite). Correlative imaging using quantum diamond magnetic microscopy combined with X-ray fluorescence mapping was used to locate regions containing potential ferromagnetic remanence carriers. Ptycho-tomographic reconstructions with voxel sizes 85 nm and 21 nm were achievable across a field-of-view > 80 µm; voxel sizes as small as 5 nm were achievable over a limited field-of-view using local ptycho-tomography. Fe-rich inclusions 300 nm in size were clearly resolved. We estimate that particles as small as 100 nm—approaching single-domain threshold for magnetite—could be resolvable using this "dual-mode" methodology. Fe-rich inclusions (likely magnetite) are closely associated with apatite inclusions that have no visible connection to the exterior surface of the zircon (e.g., via intersecting cracks). There is no evidence of radiation damage, alteration, recrystallisation or deformation in the host zircon or apatite that could provide alternative pathways for Fe infiltration, indicating that magnetite and apatite grew separately as primary phases in the magma, that magnetite adhered to the surfaces of the apatite, and that the magnetite-coated apatite was then encapsulated as primary inclusions within the growing zircon. Rarer examples of Fe-rich inclusions entirely encapsulated by zircon are also observed. These observations support the presence of primary inclusions in relatively young and pristine zircon crystals. Combining magnetic and tomography results we deduce the presence of magnetic carriers that are in the optimal size range for carrying strong and stable paleomagnetic signals but that remain below the detection limits of even the highest-resolution X-ray tomography reconstructions. We recommend the use of focused ion beam nanotomography and/or correlative transmission electron microscopy to directly confirm the presence of primary magnetite in the sub 300 nm range as a necessary step in targeted paleomagnetic workflows. The estimation of crystallization and metamorphic reworking ages of mafic rocks in the polycyclic Precambrian areas is a difficult problem. Magmatic baddeleyite can be partially or completely replaced by polycrystalline zircon within a wide range of temperature and pressures, from greenschist to granulite facies. Evaluation of the age of each phase of the zircon–baddeleyite aggregates can provide information on both the age of the magmatic crystallization and metamorphism. U-Th-Pb (SHRIMP-II) and U-Pb (ID-TIMS) geochronological studies were carried out for single baddeleyite grains and zircon–baddeleyite aggregates from gabbronorites ("drusites") of the Ambarnsky massif (Belomorian Province, Fennoscandian Shield). The petrological studies indicate the simultaneous growth of coronas at the olivine–plagioclase boundary and zircon rims around baddeleyite. U-Pb (ID-TIMS) dating of single baddeleyite grains yielded 2411 ± 6 Ma crystallization age of gabbronorites of the Ambarnsky massif. U-Pb (ID-TIMS) dating coupled with the discrete chemical abrasion give an age of 1911 ± 35 Ma for metamorphic zircon rims. The obtained results indicate that coronitic textures in the gabbronorites were formed 500 million years later than the magmatic crystallization of rocks as a result of the granulite-facies metamorphism that was probably related to the Lapland-Kola orogeny. Haerdaban is a newly discovered Zn–Pb deposit (0.64 Mt at 6.19 wt% Zn and 1.09 wt% Pb) in the Western Tianshan, NW China. Sulfide mineralization mainly occurs as veins, breccias, and semi-massive ores within the dolomitic limestone and calcareous slate. Here we use Rb–Sr sphalerite and SHRIMP U–Pb zircon geochronology to place constraints on the age and formation of the deposit. Rb–Sr dating of sphalerite gives an isochron age of 432 ± 45 Ma (n = 6; 87Sr/86Sri = 0.7102 ± 0.0020), providing a direct age constraint for the main mineralization. SHRIMP U–Pb data for detrital zircon from three samples of host siliceous dolomite have relatively similar age modes with prominent age peaks at 1576 Ma, 1781 Ma, and 1848 Ma, and a smaller peak at 1375 Ma. The maximum depositional age for the host dolomite is constrained at 1099 ± 21 Ma by the weighted mean age of the four youngest detrital zircons. These results demonstrate that the main mineralization clearly postdates the host sedimentary rocks. Zircons from two diorite samples and one granite sample yield overlapping 206Pb/238U ages with a weighted mean of 394.5 ± 1.5 Ma. This age is slightly younger but within analytical uncertainty of the 432 ± 45 Ma for the ores, implying a possible temporal relationship between intrusions and main mineralization. The igneous intrusions could provide the heat to drive the hydrothermal system responsible for main-stage mineralization. Haerdaban is interpreted to be a metamorphosed SEDEX Zn–Pb deposit that has been remobilized by subsequent hydrothermal activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reduced nature of the subducting slab has been used to explain the relatively poor endowment of economic porphyry copper deposits in Paleo-Tethyan arc systems. The presence of numerous porphyry Cu deposits in the southern Yidun terrane potentially challenges this model, because these deposits are thought to be the product of Paleo-Tethyan subduction. To investigate this, two representative deposits (i.e., Pulang and Songnuo porphyry Cu deposits) from the southern Yidun terrane have been studied. Zircon U-Pb ages of pre- and syn-mineral porphyries in Pulang are 221 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 0.89) and 215 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 1.50), respectively. Zircon and garnet U-Pb ages of the Songnuo syn-mineral porphyry are 217 ± 2 Ma (MSWD = 1.15) and 223 ± 5 Ma (MSWD = 0.97), respectively. The Pulang and Songnuo porphyries both have high whole-rock Sr/Y ratios with minor or no negative Eu anomalies, consistent with derivation from hydrous magmas that underwent minor early plagioclase crystallization but abundant amphibole fractionation. The two porphyry intrusions are characterized by high large-ion-lithophile elements (LILE: Th, U, Ba, Rb) abundances, and low concentrations of high-field-strength elements (HFSE: Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf). They have similar initial Sr isotope ratios from 0.7055 to 0.7073, ƐNd (t) values from − 4.3 to − 1.6 and zircon ƐHf (t) values of − 1.81 ± 1.34 (n = 47) that are distinct from published results for the Permian–Early Triassic Paleo-Tethyan arc granitoids in the Sanjiang region but similar to the Neoproterozoic arc intrusions in the nearby western Yangtze craton. The Pulang and Songnuo porphyries have relatively high zircon EuN/EuN* ratios (0.59 ± 0.04, n = 52) and calculated Δ log fO2 (FMQ) values (1.61 ± 0.23, n = 52), consistent with relatively oxidized magmas. This feature is similar to the published data for the Neoproterozoic arc intrusions (EuN/EuN* = 0.55 ± 0.08; Δ log fO2 (FMQ) = 2.14 ± 0.60), but distinct from the published data for the reduced normal Paleo-Tethyan arc magmas (EuN/EuN* = 0.29 ± 0.10; Δ log fO2 (FMQ) = − 0.68 ± 0.88). Given that the most recent tectonic reconstruction models suggest that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean closed before ~ 220 Ma, we propose that the Pulang and Songnuo porphyries Cu deposits were formed in a postsubduction setting from oxidized melts generated by reactivating the Neoproterozoic arc root, unrelated to Paleo-Tethyan subduction.
