Song type matching has been hypothesized to be a graded signal of aggression; however, it is often the case that variation in matching behavior is unrelated to variation in aggressiveness. An alternative view is that whether an individual matches a song is determined mainly by syntactic rules governing how songs are sequenced. In song sparrows (Melospiza melodia), two such rules are the cycling rule, which directs that a bird cycles through its song types in close to the minimum number of bouts, and the bout length rule, which directs that a long bout of a song type is followed by a long interval before that song type is sung again. The effect of these rules on matching is confirmed here for a population of eastern song sparrows. Territorial males were challenged at the end of a recording session with playback of one of their own song types. Logistic regression showed that the probability of matching the playback song type increased with the length of the interval since the subject had last sung that song type, as predicted by the cycling rule. The probability of matching decreased as prior bout length increased, as predicted by the bout length rule. In a multivariate logistic regression, interval length and prior bout length were both associated with matching and together correctly predicted matching in 81.3% of cases. The results support the syntactic constraints hypothesis, which proposes that matching is a non-signaling by-product of internal rules governing the ordering of song type sequences. Significance statement: Vocal matching has attracted widespread interest in large part because it seems an effective method of directing an aggressive message at a particular recipient. Here, we show that in an eastern population of song sparrows, decisions on whether to match another bird are largely determined by internal rules of syntax governing how a singer sequences its song types, rather than by variation in aggressiveness or other individual traits. These results support the view that vocal matching is an incidental byproduct of internal mechanisms controlling the ordering of vocalization types and so is not a signal at all. Predator presentation experiments are widely used to investigate animal alarm vocalizations. They usually involve presentations of predator models or playbacks of predator calls, but it remains unclear whether the two paradigms provide similar results, a major limitation when investigating animal syntactic and semantic capacities. Here, we investigate whether visual and acoustic predator cues elicit different vocal reactions in black-fronted titi monkeys (Callicebus nigrifrons). We exposed six groups of wild titi monkeys to visual models or playbacks of vocalizations of raptor or felid. We characterized each group's vocal reactions using sequence parameters known to reliably encode predatory events in this species. We found that titi monkeys' vocal reactions varied with the predator species but also with the experimental paradigm: while vocal reactions to raptor vocalizations and models were similar, felid vocalizations elicited heterogeneous, different reactions from that given to felid models. We argue that subjects are not familiar with felid vocalizations, because of a lack of learning opportunities due to the silent behaviour of felids. We discuss the implication of these findings for the semantic capacities of titi monkeys. We finally recommend that playbacks of predator vocalizations should not be used in isolation but in combination with visual model presentations, to allow fine-grained analyses of the communication system of prey species. Here, we studied the vocal reactions of titi monkeys to calls and models of raptors and felids. We show that titi monkeys seem to recognize the vocalizations of raptors but not those of felids. The study of the vocal reactions emitted when titi monkeys cannot clearly identify the threat allows us to draw accurate hypotheses about the meaning of titi monkeys' alarm utterances. We argue that playbacks of predator calls should be used in conjunction with model presentations, which can allow us to better investigate the information and the structure of the alarm systems. Aspect-Opinion Pair Extraction (AOPE) task aims to capture each aspect with its corresponding opinions in user reviews. Entity recognition and relation detection are two fundamental subtasks of AOPE. Although recent works take interaction into account, the two subtasks are still relatively independent during calculation. Furthermore, since AOPE task has not been formally proposed for a long time, syntactic information does not attract much attention in the current deep learning models for AOPE. In this paper, we propose a model for Synchronously Tracking Entities and Relations (STER) to deal with AOPE. Specifically, we design a network consisting of a bank of gated RNNs, where we can track all entities of a review sentence in parallel. STER utilizes three features, i.e., context, syntax and relation, to learn the representation of each tracked entity and calculate the correlated degree between all entities synchronously at each time step. The entity representation and the correlated degree are highly dependent during calculation. Finally, they will be used for entity recognition and relation detection, respectively. Therefore, in STER, the two subtasks of AOPE can achieve sufficient interaction, which enhances their mutual heuristic effect heavily. To verify the effectiveness and adaptiveness of our model, we conduct experiments on two annotation versions of SemEval datasets. Emerging data in a range of non-human animal species have highlighted a latent ability to combine certain pre-existing calls together into larger structures. Currently, however, the quantification of context-specific call combinations has received less attention. This is problematic because animal calls can co-occur with one another simply through chance alone. One common approach applied in language sciences to identify recurrent word combinations is collocation analysis. Through comparing the co-occurrence of two words with how each word combines with other words within a corpus, collocation analysis can highlight above chance, two-word combinations. Here, we demonstrate how this approach can also be applied to non-human animal signal sequences by implementing it on artificially generated data sets of call combinations. We argue collocation analysis represents a promising tool for identifying non-random, communicatively relevant call combinations and, more generally, signal sequences, in animals. Significance statement: Assessing the propensity for animals to combine calls provides important comparative insights into the complexity of animal vocal systems and the selective pressures such systems have been exposed to. Currently, however, the objective quantification of context-specific call combinations has received less attention. Here we introduce an approach commonly applied in corpus linguistics, namely collocation analysis, and show how this method can be put to use for identifying call combinations more systematically. Through implementing the same objective method, so-called call-ocations, we hope researchers will be able to make more meaningful comparisons regarding animal signal sequencing abilities both within and across systems. When responding to a conspecific call, especially when mobbing a predator, receivers rely on acoustic cues produced by callers. Variation in calls, either gradual or discrete, can inform potential mobbers about the situation. Great tits use a combinatorial call made of frequency-modulated elements (FMEs) and D notes. The gradual properties of the D notes change when facing different situations (e.g., different predators). We tested the relative effect of the number of D notes per call or the number of calls per minute on the behaviour of great tits with a playback experiment on free-ranging tits. Great tits did not change their approach behaviour depending on the treatments broadcast. However, they increased their vigilance level with an increased number of D notes in the total sequence. We propose that great tits can consider the overall amount of D notes as a form of information about the predator being mobbed. In addition, an increased number of D notes did not modify the approach behaviour but modified the vigilance behaviour, possibly indicating that great tits process the complete FME-D call as a whole mobbing unit rather than the simple sum of a vigilance call (FME) and a recruitment call (D notes). Our study sheds new light on the coding system of great tits when mobbing a predator and, more generally, how animals can combine simple syntactic rules and gradual variations when communicating. Significance statement: Information transfer when communicating about a predator is well described, particularly when mobbing a predator. However, it is unclear which specific variable(s) receivers rely on when adapting their response. Here, we test whether great tits adapt their response when the number of calls per minute and/or the number of notes per call is increased. Our results indicate that great tits rely on the overall number of notes in a calling sequence as a proxy for urgency. We also propose that the combinatorial call they use when mobbing is considered a whole rather than the simple sum of its constituents. Understanding how information transfer occurs in birds using combinatorial calls instead of simple note repetition adds to the current insights about compositional syntax in animals. A founder of the fields of behavioural ecology and neuroethology, Peter Marler's research uncovered fundamental principles underlying how animals learn to communicate and employ signals in numerous contexts. Studying animal taxa as diverse as birds and primates, he helped illuminate how general principles underlie the communication of all animals. Further, he illustrated the power of comparative research to help us learn more about human behaviour and language. His approach shows us the importance of careful, curiosity-driven research inspired by natural history.
