This paper presents a report on the activities and the proposed action plan of the Education and Public Outreach Working Group (EPO WG) of Square Kilometre Array–India Consortium (SKAIC). Details of a set of flagship programs as well as supporting activities are presented, in consonance with the scale of India's involvement in Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), as well as the educational and science literacy contexts in the country. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Observatory is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that has recently entered into the construction phase, after successful completion of the design and prototyping phases during 2013–2021. Planned to be operational by the end of this decade, the SKA is expected to revolutionise astronomy by allowing cutting edge explorations in an extremely wide range of science areas, while driving the growth of many important new state-of-the-art technologies. There are more than 10 countries currently participating in the international consortium to build this facility, which will be co-located in Australia and South Africa with the global headquarters in the United Kingdom. Indian scientists and engineers have played a significant role since the beginning: from the definition of the SKA concept and its science case, to some important aspects of the design of the instrument and the prototyping activities. India is now getting ready to join the construction phase of the SKA with a well defined proposal for technical activities spanning a few different areas of work. Along with this, Indian astronomers are busy refining their science case for the SKA and preparing in different ways to be ready for front line science with the facility as and when it is commissioned. All these activities are coordinated by the SKA India consortium, which currently has a membership of more than 20 institutions across the country. Modern studies of solar radio emission are complicated by continuous power amplification and multifrequency external interference, which often completely overlap important frequency ranges. Many topical problems in solar radio astronomy require large effective areas of radio telescopes, high frequency and time resolutions, accurate spatial measurements, and a large dynamic range. It becomes relevant to change the concept of receiving recording equipment. This paper deals with topical problems of the physics of the solar corona in combination with optimal methods of observation with large instruments. The features and difficulties of combining high parameters—dynamic, spatial, temporal, and frequency resolutions—are considered. The proposed solutions of the new-generation observation complex implement the possibilities of intelligent selection of registration conditions in a multioctave mode with multichannel over 8000 channels/GHz with temporary permission up to 8 ms/spectrum. A multiobject observation mode becomes available from powerful flaring objects to faint structures of various nature. High-speed data processing makes it possible to implement an online mode of interference elimination, which is based on a fast statistical analysis of the spectrum with the selection of non-Gaussian (interference) structures. Methods for high-speed analysis of large-volume data (the principal component analysis method) and their presentation to the user are proposed. Examples of the operation of the complex in the range of 1–3 GHz are given. The prospects of a new approach for multiobject radio astronomy observations in the implementation of the RATAN-600 tracking mode are considered: from recombination lines to wide-range spectra, from low-contrast fluctuations to fast changes in flares, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After introducing Leonardo da Vinci's (LdV) predecessors in the field of light propagation research, his drawings on the topic of reflecting light by a spherical mirror are analysed. The discovery of LdV is presented, according to which, at an infinitely distant source of rays, a small fragment of the canopy is enough to generate a focus, while the rest of the mirror forms a caustic for which LdV did not indicate an application. An analytical description of the energy concentration in the focus and on the caustic is given, together with its reference to the geometric representation of the acoustic field in rooms. Based on the general principles of wave motion, symmetry is shown in the description of energy relations in acoustics and electromagnetism. It is explained why in the sound field in existing halls, instead of a whole caustic only its cusp is observed, which is perceived as a point-like sound focus. The size of the mirror aperture, shown graphically by LdV, is determined. How the development of receiving techniques increased the mirror aperture compared to the LdV estimate is also shown. The implementation of these improvements is presented via the example of the Arecibo and FAST radio telescopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fast developments of radio astronomy open a new window to explore the properties of Dark Matter (DM). The recent direct imaging of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of M87 radio galaxy by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration is expected to be very useful to search for possible new physics. In this work, we illustrate that such results can be used to detect the possible synchrotron radiation signature produced by DM annihilation from the innermost region of the SMBH. Assuming the existence of a spike DM density profile, we obtain the flux density due to DM annihilation induced electrons and positrons, and derive new limits on the DM annihilation cross section via the comparison with the EHT integral flux density at 230 GHz. Our results show that the parameter space can be probed by the EHT observations is largely complementary to other experiments. For DM with typical mass regions of being weakly interacting massive particles, the annihilation cross section several orders of magnitude below the thermal production level can be excluded by the EHT observations under the density spike assumption. Future EHT observations may further improve the sensitivity on the DM searches, and may also provide a unique opportunity to test the interplay between DM and the SMBH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The common phenomenon of lightning still harbors many secrets such as what are the conditions for lightning initiation and what is driving the discharge to propagate over several tens of kilometers through the atmosphere forming conducting ionized channels called leaders. Since lightning is an electric discharge phenomenon, there are positively and negatively charged leaders. In this work we report on measurements made with the LOFAR radio telescope, an instrument primarily build for radio-astronomy observations. It is observed that a negative leader rather suddenly changes, for a few milliseconds, into a mode where it radiates 100 times more VHF power than typical negative leaders after which it spawns a large number of more typical negative leaders. This mode occurs during the initial stage, soon after initiation, of all lightning flashes we have mapped (about 25). For some flashes this mode occurs also well after initiation and we show one case where it is triggered twice, some 100 ms apart. We postulate that this is indicative of a small (order of 5 km 2 ) high charge pocket. Lightning thus appears to be initiated exclusively in the vicinity of such a small but dense charge pocket.
