In Morocco, red fruit production has thrived, primarily utilizing hydroponic methods to control crops, increase fruit yield and quality, and avoid soil-related problems. However, the irrigation of these expansive hydroponic farms relies heavily on water sourced from dams, many of which are contaminated with Microcystins (MCs). To address this contamination issue, ongoing research is focused on discovering effective and cost-efficient biological solutions for eliminating MCs. In this study, we isolate and identify bacterial strains capable of degrading MCs, evaluate the rate of degradation, and investigate how soil inoculated with these bacteria affects the accumulation of MCs in plant tissue. The partial 16S rRNA analyses of three bacterial sequences were conducted, identifying them through NCBI as follows: Ensifer sp. (B1) isolated from soil, Shinella sp. (B2) from a cyanobacterial bloom, and Stutzerimonas sp. (B3) from water. These bacteria exhibited the ability to degrade MCs, with approximately 34.75%, 73.75%, and 30.1% of the initial concentration (20 µg/L) being removed after a 6-day period for B1, B2, and B3, respectively. Moreover, strawberry plants were cultivated hydroponically in a greenhouse for a duration of 90 days. These plants were subjected to extracts of cyanobacteria containing 10 and 20 µg/L of Microcystins (MC), as well as water from an artificial lake contaminated with MC, both with and without the presence of isolated bacterial strains. Among these strains, Shinella sp. exhibited the highest efficacy in mitigating MC accumulation. Specifically, it resulted in a reduction of approximately 1.159 µg of MC per kilogram of root dry weight, leading to complete elimination in the leaves and fruits. The findings also indicated that the inoculation of perlite with the three MC-degrading bacterial strains significantly enhanced growth, photosynthetic pigments, yield, biochemical constituents, and quality attributes of strawberries (p ≤ 0.05). These promising outcomes suggest the potential of this approach for addressing the adverse impacts of crops irrigated with MC-contaminated water in future agricultural practices., (© 2024. Silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) have an eminent role in improving plant yield through improving yield. The present study was conducted to find the effect of Si NPs on plant yield, biochemical attributes, and minerals of different cucumber cultivars. The greenhouse experiment with foliar application of Si NPs (100, 200, and 300 mg L -1 ) was carried out on cucumber cultivars (Emilie, Mirsoltan, Mitio, and Viola). The application of Si NPs at 300 mg L -1 led to the highest fruit yield, with a 17% increase in fruit production compared to the control. Fruit firmness differed by 31% between Emilie and Si NPs at 100 mg L -1 and Mito at 300 mg L -1 . Plants experiencing Si NPs at 300 mg L -1 had the greatest chlorophyll (Chl) a+b. Compared to the other cultivars, Mito had a greater fruit yield and Chl content. The Si NPs increased TSS by 11% while lowering TA by 24% when compared to the control at 300 mg L -1 . Foliar application of Si NPs reduced the value of TSS/TA. The largest value of K was reached in the Mito cultivar with Si NPs at 200 mg L -1 , with a 22% increase in comparison to the control, indicating that Si NPs considerably boosted the K content. The Si NPs at 200 mg L -1 significantly increased leaf N and P in the Mito cultivar by 16 and 50%, respectively. By using agglomerative hierarchy clustering (AHC), Emilie and Mito were located in two separate clusters, whilst Viola and Mirsoltan were grouped in one cluster. Abstract Our study evaluated the potential use of fly ash amended cow dung based vermicompost as a medium for Swiss chard and tomato growth, yield, and heavy metal uptake. Fly ash vermicompost was used to substitute 50%, 25%, and 0% cocopeat with the application of 100% and 50% of the recommended hydroponic fertilizer. The vermicompost incorporation level (VC) and fertilizer level (F) did not significantly influence Swiss chard chlorophyll content, but significantly influenced that of tomatoes. The highest chlorophyll content in tomatoes was recorded under the 25%VC with 100% F. For Swiss chard and tomato, the incorporation of 50% fertilizer resulted in an average decrease in yield of 43.8% and 15.02%, respectively. Interestingly, with tomatoes, the highest yield was observed under 50% VC with 100% fertilizer treatment, which was 10.3% higher than that of the control. VC did not significantly influence the Zn concentration for either crop, with none of the treatments showing a Zn concentration above the maximum permissible limit for vegetables at 60 mg/kg. For both Zn and Cr, 50% fertilizer application resulted in the highest concentrations in both crops. Notably, the Cr concentration which has a maximum permissible value of 2.3 mg/kg resulted in all treatments, including the control, yielding values above this critical value. Based on our study, Swiss chard and tomatoes grown with 25% fly ash amended VC may be consumed with limited human risk, though fly ash vermicompost alone does not seem to have enough nutrients for tomato and Swiss chard growth and require fertilizer supplementation.

Abstract This field experiment was conducted in Chichu Kebele in the Dilla Zuria area from 2020 to 2023. The objective of the experiment was to determine the optimal mulching strategy for enhancing soil fertility and pineapple production by comparing three treatments (grass mulch, plastic mulch, and farmers’ practices without any mulch) using a RCB (Randomized Complete Block) design. The study’s findings showed that the treatments with plastic mulch had the greatest soil moisture content values (18.41%), while the treatments with no mulch had the lowest values (11.39%). Compared to mulched treatments, pineapple planted without mulch had the greatest bulk density values (1.43 g/cm3). Total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 34 and 25%, respectively due to plastic mulching. However, total nitrogen and organic carbon has increase by 43 and 37.5%, respectively due to grass mulching. Fruit length was larger by 42.7 and 33.2%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulch compared to the control. However, fruit girth was wider by 54.1 and 43.8%, respectively due to plastic and grass mulches compared to the control. The pineapple with the most fruit yield (71.39 t/ha), fruit length (17.4 cm), fruit girth (46.67 cm), and sucker number (15 pieces) was obtained using plastic mulching. However, pineapple grown without mulch had the lowest yield ever noted. Plastic mulch outperformed farmers’ practices and grass mulching in terms of conserving soil moisture, which increased yield and yield characteristics. For the baseline, the marginal rate of return generated by the plastic and grass mulch treatments was 118.5 and 93.65%, respectively. Thus, the study’s best recommendation for improving soils and achieving a high pineapple fruit yield is to grow pineapples using plastic mulch.

Key Message: Three QTLs associated with low-temperature tolerance were identified by genome-wide association analysis, and 15 candidate genes were identified by haplotype analysis and gene expression analyses. Low temperature is a critical factor affecting the geographical distribution, growth, development, and yield of soybeans, with cold stress during seed germination leading to substantial productivity loss. In this study, an association panel comprising 260 soybean accessions was evaluated for four germination traits and four cold tolerance index traits, revealing extensive variation in cold tolerance. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 10 quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) associated with cold tolerance, utilizing 30,799 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and four GWAS models. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis positioned these QTNs within three cold-tolerance quantitative trait loci (QTL) and, with QTL19-1, was positioned by three multi-locus models, underscoring its importance as a key QTL. Integrative haplotype analysis, supplemented by transcriptome analysis, uncovered 15 candidate genes. The haplotypes within the genes Glyma.18G044200, Glyma.18G044300, Glyma.18G044900, Glyma.18G045100, Glyma.19G222500, and Glyma.19G222600 exhibited significant phenotypic variations, with differential expression in materials with varying cold tolerance. The QTNs and candidate genes identified in this study offer substantial potential for marker-assisted selection and gene editing in breeding cold-tolerant soybeans, providing valuable insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying cold tolerance during soybean germination., (© 2024. Key Message: Exogenous SL positively regulates pepper DS by altering the root morphology, photosynthetic character, antioxidant enzyme activity, stomatal behavior, and SL-related gene expression. Drought stress (DS) has always been a problem for the growth and development of crops, causing significant negative impacts on crop productivity. Strigolactone (SL) is a newly discovered class of plant hormones that are involved in plants' growth and development and environmental stresses. However, the role of SL in response to DS in pepper remains unknown. DS considerably hindered photosynthetic pigments content, damaged root architecture system, and altered antioxidant machinery. In contrast, SL application significantly restored pigment concentration modified root architecture system, and increased relative chlorophyll content (SPAD). Additionally, SL treatment reduced oxidative damage by reducing hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) (24-57%) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (79-89%) accumulation in pepper seedlings. SL-pretreated pepper seedlings showed significant improvement in antioxidant enzyme activity, proline accumulation, and soluble sugar content. Furthermore, SL-related genes (CcSMAX2, CcSMXL6, and CcSMXL3) were down-regulated under DS. These findings suggest that the foliar application of SL can alleviate the adverse effects of drought tolerance by up-regulating chlorophyll content and activating antioxidant defense mechanisms., (© 2024. Abstract The use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to inspect extensive peach orchards to improve fruit yield and quality is currently a major area of research. The challenge is to accurately detect peach diseases in real time, which is critical to improving peach production. The dense arrangement of peaches and the uneven lighting conditions significantly hamper the accuracy of disease detection. To overcome this, this paper presents a dual-channel transformer network (DCTNet) for peach disease detection. First, an Adaptive Dual-Channel Affine Transformer (ADCT) is developed to efficiently capture key information in images of diseased peaches by integrating features across spatial and channel dimensions within blocks. Next, a Robust Gated Feed Forward Network (RGFN) is constructed to extend the receptive field of the model by improving its context aggregation capabilities. Finally, a Local–Global Network is proposed to fully capture the multi-scale features of peach disease images through a collaborative training approach with input images. Furthermore, a peach disease dataset including different growth stages of peaches is constructed to evaluate the detection performance of the proposed method. Extensive experimental results show that our model outperforms other sophisticated models, achieving an $${AP}_{50}$$ AP 50 of 95.57% and an F1 score of 0.91. The integration of this method into UAV systems for surveying large peach orchards ensures accurate disease detection, thereby safeguarding peach production.

The majority of polyploids can withstand many stresses better than their monoploid counterparts; however, there is no proven mechanism that can fully explain the level of tolerance at the biochemical and molecular levels. Here, we make an effort to provide an explanation for this intriguing but perplexing issue using the antioxidant responses, genomic stability, DNA methylation pattern and yield in relation to ploidy level under the elevated level of ozone in Abelmoschus cytotypes. The outcome of this study inferred that the elevated ozone causes an increase in reactive oxygen species leading to enhanced lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and DNA de-methylation in all the Abelmoschus cytotypes. The monoploid cytotype of Abelmoschus, that is Abelmoschus moschatus L., experienced the highest oxidative stress under elevated O 3 , resulting in maximum DNA damage and DNA de-methylation leading to the maximum reduction in yield. While the diploid (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) and triploid (Abelmoschus caillei A. Chev.) cytotypes of Abelmoschus with lower oxidative stress result in lesser DNA damage and DNA de-methylation which ultimately leads to lower yield reduction. The result of this experiment explicitly revealed that polyploidy confers better adaptability in the case of Abelmoschus cytotypes under ozone stress. In today's fast-shifting climate change scenario, crops are exposed to environmental pressures, abiotic and biotic stress. Hence, these will affect the production of agricultural products and give rise to a worldwide economic crisis. The increase in world population has exacerbated the situation with increasing food demand. The use of chemical agents is no longer recommended due to adverse effects towards the environment and health. Biocontrol agents (BCAs) and biostimulants, are feasible options for dealing with yield losses induced by plant stresses, which are becoming more intense due to climate change. BCAs and biostimulants have been recommended due to their dual action in reducing both stresses simultaneously. Although protection against biotic stresses falls outside the generally accepted definition of biostimulant, some microbial and non-microbial biostimulants possess the biocontrol function, which helps reduce biotic pressure on crops. The application of synergisms using BCAs and biostimulants to control crop stresses is rarely explored. Currently, a combined application using both agents offer a great alternative to increase the yield and growth of crops while managing stresses. This article provides an overview of crop stresses and plant stress responses, a general knowledge on synergism, mathematical modelling used for synergy evaluation and type of in vitro and in vivo synergy testing, as well as the application of synergism using BCAs and biostimulants in reducing crop stresses. Antibiotic resistance is a global health problem driven by the irrational use of antibiotics in different areas (such as agriculture, animal farming, and human healthcare). Sub-lethal concentrations of antibiotic residues impose selective pressure on environmental, plant-associated, and human microbiome leading to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). This review summarizes all sources of antibiotic resistance in agricultural soils (including manure, sewage sludge, wastewater, hospitals/pharmaceutical industry, and bioinoculants). The factors (such as the physicochemical properties of soil, root exudates, concentration of antibiotic exposure, and heavy metals) that facilitate the transmission of resistance in plant microbiomes are discussed. Potential solutions for effective measures and control of antibiotic resistance in the environment are also hypothesized. Manure exhibits the highest antibiotics load, followed by hospital and municipal WW. Chlortetracycline, tetracycline, and sulfadiazine have the highest concentrations in the manure. Antibiotic resistance from organic fertilizers is transmitted to the plant microbiome via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Plant microbiomes serve as transmission routes of ARB and ARGS to humans. Key Message: SlNAC12 enhances salt stress tolerance of transgenic tomato by regulating ion homeostasis, antioxidant activity and flavonoids biosynthesis Soil salinization is a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth and development. NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) is a large family of plant-specific transcription factors that play crucial roles in stress response. Here, we investigated the role of a novel NAC transcription factor, SlNAC12, in conferring salt stress tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Subcellular localization and yeast assays studies revealed that SlNAC12 is localized in the nucleus with weak transcriptional activity. SlNAC12 transcript was induced by salt stress in the leaves and roots of tomato seedlings. Overexpression of SlNAC12 in tomato led to significantly reduced plant height and root length. Transgenic tomato lines overexpressing of SlNAC12 (OE#1 and OE#3) exhibited enhanced tolerance to salinity, as evidenced by reduced the inhibitory effect of growth parameters under salt stress compared to wild type (WT). Overexpression of SlNAC12 in tomato affected Na + and K + homeostasis, leading to reduced Na + /K + ratio, enhanced activity of antioxidant enzymes and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation under salt stress. Furthermore, the transcript levels of several genes involved in flavonoids metabolism and the levels of flavonoids accumulation were increased in SlNAC12-overexpressing tomato lines. Plants host an array of microbial symbionts, including both bacterial and fungal endophytes located within their roots. While bacterial and fungal endophytes independently alter host plant growth, response to stress and susceptibility to disease, their combined effects on host plants are poorly studied. To tease apart interactions between co-occurring endophytes on plant growth, morphology, physiology, and survival we conducted a greenhouse experiment. Different genotypes of Spartina alterniflora, a foundational salt marsh species, were inoculated with one bacterial endophyte, Kosakonia oryzae, one fungal endophyte, Magnaporthales sp., or co-inoculated. Within the greenhouse, an unplanned herbivory event occurred which allowed insight into the ways bacteria, fungi, and co-inoculation of both endophytic microbes alters plant defense chemicals and changes herbivory. Broadly, the individual inoculation of the bacterial endophyte increased survival, whereas the fungal endophyte increased plant growth traits. Following the herbivory event, the proportion of stems grazed was reduced when plants were inoculated with the individual endophytes and further reduced when both endophytes were present. Across genotypes, anti-herbivore defense chemicals varied by individual and co-inoculation of endophytes. Bacterial inoculation and genotype interactively affected above:below-ground biomass and S. alterniflora survival of ungrazed plants. Overall, our results highlight the variable outcomes of endophyte inoculation on Spartina growth, morphology, phenolics, and survival. This study furthers our understanding of the combined effects of symbionts and plant multitrophic interactions. Key Message: This comprehensive review underscores the application of genome editing in plant reproductive biology, including recent advances and challenges associated with it. Genome editing (GE) is a powerful technology that has the potential to accelerate crop improvement by enabling efficient, precise, and rapid engineering of plant genomes. Over the last decade, this technology has rapidly evolved from the use of meganucleases (homing endonucleases), zinc-finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nucleases to the use of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (CRISPR/Cas), which has emerged as a popular GE tool in recent times and has been extensively used in several organisms, including plants. GE has been successfully employed in several crops to improve plant reproductive traits. Improving crop reproductive traits is essential for crop yields and securing the world's food supplies. In this review, we discuss the application of GE in various aspects of plant reproductive biology, including its potential application in haploid induction, apomixis, parthenocarpy, development of male sterile lines, and the regulation of self-incompatibility. Extreme anthropogenic activities and current farming techniques exacerbate the effects of water and soil impurity by hazardous heavy metals (HMs), severely reducing agricultural output and threatening food safety. In the upcoming years, plants that undergo exposure to HM might cause a considerable decline in the development as well as production. Hence, plants have developed sophisticated defensive systems to evade or withstand the harmful consequences of HM. These mechanisms comprise the uptake as well as storage of HMs in organelles, their immobilization via chemical formation by organic chelates, and their removal using many ion channels, transporters, signaling networks, and TFs, amid other approaches. Among various cutting-edge methodologies, omics, most notably genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, miRNAomics, phenomics, and epigenomics have become game-changing approaches, revealing information about the genes, proteins, critical metabolites as well as microRNAs that govern HM responses and resistance systems. With the help of integrated omics approaches, we will be able to fully understand the molecular processes behind plant defense, enabling the development of more effective crop protection techniques in the face of climate change. Land suitability assessment is integral to the advancement of precision agriculture. This inquiry is focused on identifying optimal regions for cultivating Alphonso mango in the coastal belt of Maharashtra, spanning across Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. Employing a GIS-based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology, 10 crucial parameters have been considered, encompassing climatic, physical, and chemical soil characteristics: cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, slope, rainfall, soil pH, soil texture, mean annual soil temperature, base saturation, soil drainage, and soil depth. Weights are assigned to these parameters based on expert opinions and existing literature to determine their significance in developing a soil suitability map. The study reveals distinct land suitability zones for Alphonso mango cultivation. The land suitability map designates 25.78% of the study area as highly suitable, while 9.18% is considered unsuitable for Alphonso mango cultivation. To validate the study, the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve has been employed, indicating an 83% approval rate for the reliability and performance of the soil suitability. Groundwater quality in Wadi Fatimah is evaluated and demarcated for agriculture utilities using comprehensive approaches namely, international standards, agricultural water quality (AWQ) indices, irrigation water quality index (IWQI), and trace metals. Groundwater samples were collected (n = 59) and analysed for EC, pH, major and minor ions and trace metals. According to FAO recommendations, 42% of samples (EC > 3000 µS/cm) are inappropriate for agricultural uses. AWQ indices including salinity hazard, Kelly's ratio and Na% show that 50%, 19% and 37% of samples, respectively, are unsuitable for agricultural uses. USSL classification reveals that groundwater is preferable only for high-permeability soils and salt-tolerant crops. IWQI suggests that 88% of samples are moderately usable for agriculture. The interrelationship between water salinity and crop yield justified that 73%, 59%, 51% and 25% of samples are desirable to yield 90% in date palm trees, sorghum, rice and citrus fruits, respectively. Groundwater is appropriate for date palm trees except in downstream regions. Boron concentration suggests that 52%, 81% and 92% of samples are suitable for sensitive, semi-tolerant and tolerant crops, respectively. Groundwater in the central part (suitable for sensitive crops), central and upstream regions (semi-tolerant crops) and all regions except downstream (tolerant crops) are suitable for cultivation. Trace metals contents illustrate that 36%, 34%, 22%, 8%, 5% and 100% of samples are inappropriate for agriculture due to high concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Mn and Mo, respectively in the groundwater. Further, AWQ indices, IWQI, USSL classifications and trace metals ensure that groundwater in the downstream, and a few pockets in the upstream are unfit for agricultural uses. Key Message: Compared with NaCl, NaHCO 3 caused more serious oxidative damage and photosynthesis inhibition in safflower by down-regulating the expression of related genes. Salt-alkali stress is one of the important factors that limit plant growth. NaCl and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) are neutral and alkaline salts, respectively. This study investigated the physiological characteristics and molecular responses of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) leaves treated with 200 mmol L -1 of NaCl or NaHCO 3 . The plants treated with NaCl treatment were less effective at inhibiting the growth of safflower, but increased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in leaves. Meanwhile, safflower alleviated stress damage by increasing proline (Pro), soluble protein (SP), and soluble sugar (SS). Both fresh weight and dry weight of safflower was severely decreased when it was subjected to NaHCO 3 stress, and there was a significant increase in the permeability of cell membranes and the contents of osmotic regulatory substances. An enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using Gene Ontology and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes identified significant enrichment of photosynthesis and pathways related to oxidative stress. Furthermore, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) showed that the darkgreen module had the highest correlation with photosynthesis and oxidative stress traits. Large numbers of transcription factors, primarily from the MYB, GRAS, WRKY, and C2H2 families, were predicted from the genes within the darkgreen module. An analysis of physiological indicators and DEGs, it was found that under saline-alkali stress, genes related to chlorophyll synthesis enzymes were downregulated, while those related to degradation were upregulated, resulting in inhibited chlorophyll biosynthesis and decreased chlorophyll content. Additionally, NaCl and NaHCO 3 stress downregulated the expression of genes related to the Calvin cycle, photosynthetic antenna proteins, and the activity of photosynthetic reaction centers to varying degrees, hindering the photosynthetic electron transfer process, suppressing photosynthesis, with NaHCO 3 stress causing more pronounced adverse effects. In terms of oxidative stress, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) did not change significantly under the NaCl treatment, but the contents of hydrogen peroxide and the rate of production of superoxide anions increased significantly under NaHCO 3 stress. In addition, treatment with NaCl upregulated the levels of expression of the key genes for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and the thioredoxin-peroxiredoxin pathway, and increased the activity of these enzymes, thus, reducing oxidative damage. Similarly, NaHCO 3 stress increased the activities of SOD, CAT, and POD and the content of ascorbic acid and initiated the glutathione-S-transferase pathway to remove excess ROS but suppressed the regeneration of glutathione and the activity of peroxiredoxin. Overall, both neutral and alkaline salts inhibited the photosynthetic process of safflower, although alkaline salt caused a higher level of stress than neutral salt. Strawberries are a favorite fruit for most people, but the residues of pesticides on strawberries might be risky to human health. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin are broad-spectrum acaricides with insecticide properties authorized for use on strawberries in Egypt. As a result, it is crucial to investigate their residues in the final product to ensure customers' safety. Consequently, field trials were conducted following the Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to study the dissipation rate and terminal residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin on strawberries. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin residues in strawberries declined due to first-order decay process, showing significant degradation (88.5% and 94.7%, respectively) after 14 days. Risk assessment study was carried out by comparing the national estimated daily intake (NEDI) to the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The results demonstrated that the dietary risk posed by the residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin in strawberry fruits was acceptable for consumers. Raising soil contamination with cadmium (Cd 2+ ) and salinization necessitates the development of green approaches using bio-elicitors to ensure sustainable crop production and mitigate the detrimental health impacts. Two field trials were carried out to study the individual and combined effects of foliage spraying of Moringa leaf extract (MLE) and soil application of effective microorganisms (EMs) on the physio-biochemical, osmolytes, antioxidants, and performance of sweet potato grown in Cd 2+ -contaminated salty soil (Cd 2+  = 17.42 mg kg -1 soil and soil salinity ECe = 7.42 dS m -1 ). Application of MLE, EMs, or MLE plus EMs significantly reduced the accumulation of Cd 2+ in roots by 55.6%, 50.0%, or 68.1% and in leaves by 31.4%, 27.6%, or 38.0%, respectively, compared to the control. Co-application of MLE and EMs reduced Na + concentration while substantially raising N, P, K + , and Ca 2+ acquisition in the leaves. MLE and EMs-treated plants exhibited higher concentrations of total soluble sugar by 69.6%, free proline by 47.7%, total free amino acids by 29.0%, and protein by 125.7% compared to the control. The enzymatic (SOD, APX, GR, and CAT) and non-enzymatic (phenolic acids, GSH, and AsA) antioxidants increased in plants treated with MLE and/or EMs application. Applying MLE and/or EMs increased the leaf photosynthetic pigment contents, membrane stability, relative water content, water productivity, growth traits, and tuber yield of Cd 2+ and salt-stressed sweet potato. While previous studies have addressed the desirable effects of biochar (BC) or magnesium nanoparticles (Mg NPs) on salinity stress individually, there is a research gap regarding their simultaneous application. Additionally, the specific mechanisms underlying the effects of BC and Mg NPs on salinity in Physalis alkekengi L. remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of BC and Mg NPs on P. alkekengi L. under salinity stress conditions. A pot experiment was conducted with salinity at 100 and 200 mM sodium chloride (NaCl), as well as soil applied BC (4% v/v) and foliar applied Mg NPs (500 mg L -1 ) on physiological and biochemical properties of P. alkekengi L. The results represented that salinity, particularly 200 mM NaCl, significantly reduced plant yield (58%) and total chlorophyll (Chl, 36%), but increased superoxide dismutase (SOD, 82%) and catalase (CAT, 159%) activity relative to non-saline conditions. However, the co-application of BC and Mg NPs mitigated these negative effects and improved fruit yield, Chl, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid. It also decreased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Salinity also altered the fatty acid composition, increasing saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), while decreasing monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). The heat map analysis showed that fruit yield, anthocyanin, Chl, and CAT were sensitive to salinity. A field trial was performed to carry out an enhanced phytoremediation technique for multi-metal contaminated copper tailings by Sudan grass (Sorghum Sudanese), ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), using conditioner (TH-LZ01) and straw combination into composite amendments as soil amendments, aimed to obtain the maximum of phytoremediation effect. The results showed that compared with untreated herbaceous plants, the application of conditioner and straw planted with herbaceous plants reduced the pH and conductivity and increased the organic matter and water content of the copper tailings to different degrees. With the addition of conditioner and straw, the DTPA-Cd, DTPA-Cu, DTPA-Pb, and DTPA-Zn contents in the copper tailings showed a decreasing trend compared with the untreated group. The herbaceous plants were promoted to reduce the percentage contents of acid soluble fractions Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn and to increase the percentage contents of reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in the copper tailings to different degrees. The contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the underground part of herbaceous plants were higher than those in the aboveground part, and the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the aboveground part and underground part decreased after adding conditioner and straw, which indicated that the conditioner and straw inhibited the transport of heavy metals in the plant. Microorganisms are cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative methods for removing heavy metals (HM) from contaminated agricultural soils. Therefore, this study aims to identify and characterize HM-tolerant (HMT) plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolated from industry-contaminated soils to determine their impact as bioremediators on HM-stressed pepper plants. Four isolates [Pseudomonas azotoformans (Pa), Serratia rubidaea (Sr), Paenibacillus pabuli (Pp) and Bacillus velezensis (Bv)] were identified based on their remarkable levels of HM tolerance in vitro. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the growth promotion and tolerance to HM toxicity of pepper plants grown in HM-polluted soils. Plants exposed to HM stress showed improved growth, physio-biochemistry, and antioxidant defense system components when treated with any of the individual isolates, in contrast to the control group that did not receive PGPR. The combined treatment of the tested HMT PGPR was, however, relatively superior to other treatments. Compared to no or single PGPR treatment, the consortia (Pa+Sr+Pp+Bv) increased the photosynthetic pigment contents, relative water content, and membrane stability index but lowered the electrolyte leakage and contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide by suppressing the (non) enzymatic antioxidants in plant tissues. In pepper, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Ni contents decreased by 88.0-88.5, 63.8-66.5, 66.2-67.0, and 90.2-90.9% in leaves, and 87.2-88.1, 69.4-70.0%, 80.0-81.3, and 92.3%% in fruits, respectively. Thus, these PGPR are highly effective at immobilizing HM and reducing translocation in planta. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained significant attention in recent years for their potential use as effective antimicrobial agents for controlling plant pathogens. This review article summarizes the recent advances in the role of MNPs in the control of plant pathogens, focusing on their mechanisms of action, applications, and limitations. MNPs can act as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent against various plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Different types of MNPs, such as silver, copper, zinc, iron, and gold, have been studied for their antimicrobial properties. The unique physicochemical properties of MNPs, such as their small size, large surface area, and high reactivity, allow them to interact with plant pathogens at the molecular level, leading to disruption of the cell membrane, inhibition of cellular respiration, and generation of reactive oxygen species. The use of MNPs in plant pathogen control has several advantages, including their low toxicity, selectivity, and biodegradability. However, their effectiveness can be influenced by several factors, including the type of MNP, concentration, and mode of application. This review highlights the current state of knowledge on the use of MNPs in plant pathogen control and discusses the future prospects and challenges in the field. Drought and salt stress negatively influence the growth and development of various plant species. Thus, it is crucial to overcome these stresses for sustainable agricultural production and the global food chain. Therefore, the present study investigated the potential effects of exogenous silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) on the physiological and biochemical parameters, and endogenous phytohormone contents of Elymus sibiricus under drought and salt stress. Drought stress was given as 45% water holding capacity, and salt stress was given as 120 mM NaCl. The seed priming was done with different SiNP concentrations: SiNP1 (50 mg L -1 ), SiNP2 (100 mg L -1 ), SiNP3 (150 mg L -1 ), SiNP4 (200 mg L -1 ), and SiNP5 (250 mg L -1 ). Both stresses imposed harmful impacts on the analyzed parameters of plants. However, SiNP5 increased the chlorophylls and osmolyte accumulation such as total proteins by 96% and 110% under drought and salt stress, respectively. The SiNP5 significantly decreased the oxidative damage and improved the activities of SOD, CAT, POD, and APX by 10%, 54%, 104%, and 211% under drought and 42%, 75%, 72%, and 215% under salt stress, respectively. The SiNPs at all concentrations considerably improved the level of different phytohormones to respond to drought and salt stress and increased the tolerance of Elymus plants. Moreover, SiNPs decreased the Na + and increased K + concentrations in Elymus suggesting the reduction in salt ion accumulation under salinity stress. Overall, exogenous application (seed priming/dipping) of SiNPs considerably enhanced the physio-biochemical and metabolic responses, resulting in an increased tolerance to drought and salt stresses. Key Message: The weighted gene co-expression network analysis and antisense oligonucleotide-mediated transient gene silencing revealed that CsAAP6 plays an important role in amino acid transport during tea shoot development. Nitrogen transport from source to sink is crucial for tea shoot growth and quality formation. Amino acid represents the major transport form of reduced nitrogen in the phloem between source and sink, but the molecular mechanism of amino acid transport from source leaves to new shoots is not yet clear. Therefore, the composition of metabolites in phloem exudates collected by the EDTA-facilitated method was analyzed through widely targeted metabolomics. A total of 326 metabolites were identified in the phloem exudates with the richest variety of amino acids and their derivatives (93), accounting for approximately 39.13% of the total metabolites. Moreover, through targeted metabolomics, it was found that the content of glutamine, glutamic acid, and theanine was the most abundant, and gradually increased with the development of new shoots. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis suggested that the expression of amino acid transport genes changed significantly. The WGCNA analysis identified that the expression levels of CsAVT1, CsLHTL8, and CsAAP6 genes located in the MEterquoise module were positively correlated with the content of amino acids such as glutamine, glutamic acid, and theanine in phloem exudates. Reducing the CsAAP6 in mature leaves resulted in a significant decrease in the content of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanine, leucine, asparagine, glutamine, and arginine in the phloem exudates, indicating that CsAAP6 played an important role in the source to sink transport of amino acids in the phloem. This study was planned to detect the adverse pathological consequences of aflatoxin B1 in White Leghorn (WLH) layer breeder males. Eight-week-old male layer cockerels were separated into six experimental categories: A group was kept as negative control, offered with normal feed only; group B was fed with 400 ppb amount of aflatoxin, while groups F and D fed with normal feed and supplemented with vitamin E 100 ppm and 1% Moringa oleifera, respectively, whereas groups E and C were fed with 400 ppb aflatoxin containing feed and ameliorated with vitamin E 100 ppm and 1% Moringa oleifera, respectively. This study was continued for 2 months and immunologic disorders and reproductive parameters were observed during the trial. To find out immunological status lymphoproliferative response to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P), antibody titers against sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) and carbon clear assay were performed by collecting samples from five birds from each group. The whole data was measured by ANOVA test, and group means were compared by DMR test by using M-Stat C software. Regarding the reproductive status, spermatogenesis, blood testosterone level, testes weight, testes histology, sperm motility, and morphology were negatively affected by aflatoxins, but these deviations positively ameliorated by vitamin E and Moringa. Vitamin E and Moringa found advantageous in boosting the immune status of affected bird. All the immunological parameters including antibody titers against sheed red blood cells, lymphoproliferative response to avian tuberculin and phagocytic potential of macrophages were suppressed by AFB1 however in control, Moringa and vitamin E groups these immunological responses were significantly higher., (© 2023. Chemical fertilizers are crucial for increasing agricultural growth and productivity, but inorganic fertilizers can negatively impact agricultural systems. To address this issue, sustainable techniques like organic farming are being developed, which improve soil quality and nutritional status while preserving human safety. In the Botanical Garden, of Department of Botany at the University of Delhi, India, experiments on Brassica juncea were carried out over a three-year period in six micro plots, each measuring 10 square meters. Vermicompost (V), Sargassum johnstoni (S), NPK (N), Trichoderma viride (T), and Sargassum + Trichoderma viride were five distinct organic combinations that were used to replenish the garden soil (ST). The aim of the study was to assess the effects of organic fertilizers and compare the results with commercially available chemical fertilizers (NPK) on Brassica growth and yield. The study found that soil modified with seaweed fertilizers significantly improved the morphological, reproductive, and biochemical properties of plants. Sargassum + Trichoderma soil amendment led to early flowering and fruiting, better-quality produce, and a low incidence of fungal infection and aphid infestation. The Hindon River is the main tributary of river Yamuna and it is a significant source of surface water, which flows through the major cities of western Uttar Pradesh, India. The indiscriminate development of industries and urbanization along river basin coupled with rapid population growths contribute various amounts of pollutant in the river. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assess the spatial-temporal variability of river water quality (seventeen physicochemical parameters and eight heavy metals) during pre- and post-monsoon seasons for 5 years data at 19 sampling sites along the river stretch. Indices associated with water quality and heavy metals were computed to scale the accurate state of risk associated to its use for drinking and irrigation. During the pre- and post-monsoon seasons, only four sites were found having safe water quality index (WQI) values. The mean heavy metal concentrations are found in order of Zn > Fe > Pb > Cu > Cr > Cd > Ni > Mn. Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an important molecule that regulates antioxidant responses that are crucial for plant stress resistance. Exposure to low levels of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-315 nm) can also activate antioxidant defenses and acclimation responses. However, how H 2 O 2 and UV-B interact to promote stress acclimation remains poorly understood. In this work, a transgenic model of Nicotiana tabacum cv Xanthi nc, with elevated Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) activity, was used to study the interaction between the constitutive overproduction of H 2 O 2 and a 14-day UV-B treatment (1.75 kJ m -2 d -1 biologically effective UV-B). Subsequently, these plants were subjected to a 7-day moderate drought treatment to evaluate the impact on drought resistance of H 2 O 2 - and UV-dependent stimulation of the plants' antioxidant system. The UV-B treatment enhanced H 2 O 2 levels and altered the antioxidant status by increasing the epidermal flavonol index, Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity, and catalase, peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase activities in the leaves. UV-B also retarded growth and suppressed acclimation responses in highly H 2 O 2 -overproducing transgenic plants. Plants not exposed to UV-B had a higher drought resistance in the form of higher relative water content of leaves. Our data associate the interaction between Mn-SOD transgene overexpression and the UV-B treatment with a stress response. In the present study, the fertilization potential of biosolids (sewage sludge; SS) for the cultivation of Aloe vera plants was investigated using block design. Pot experiments were conducted in this study using 50, 100, 150, and 200 g/kg of SS. Results showed that SS-fertilized soils significantly (p < 0.05) affected the proximate, biochemical, and heavy metal parameters of A. vera plants. In particular, the T4 treatment gave the best results with maximum plant height 62.21 ± 0.10 cm, number of leaves per plant 18.00 ± 4.00, shoot-to-root ratio 6:1, fresh weight 1972.10 ± 0.07 g per plant, dry weight 175.49 ± 0.15 g per plant, total chlorophyll content (TCC) 0.41 ± 0.02 mg/g fwt., carotenoids 0.25 ± 0.04 mg/g, total flavonoids 7.55 ± 0.05 mg/g, total tannins 3.87 ± 0.06 µg/g, ascorbic acid 532.14 ± 0.10 µg/g, superoxide dismutase (SOD) 46.28 ± 0.19 µg/g, catalase (CAT) 119.23 ± 0.17 µg/g, salicylic acid 3.05 ± 0.12 mg/ml and anthraquinones 0.45 ± 0.04 mg/ml, respectively. The proximate plant characteristics were 96.25 ± 2.71% moisture content, crude protein 0.93 ± 0.05%, crude fiber 5.78 ± 0.44%, crude lipid 3.25 ± 0.02%, lignin 10.74 ± 0.30%, cellulose 13.56 ± 1.06%, hemicellulose 7.24 ± 0.14%, ash 8.75 ± 0.03%, and carbohydrate contents 52.18 ± 1.10% in comparison with control treatment. The bioaccumulation factor showed that heavy metal accumulation was in the order of Cd < Ni < Cu < Pb < Cr < Zn < Fe. The prediction models developed on the basis of soil properties showed good fitness results for the prediction of heavy metal uptake by A. vera plants. Soil salinity is a major environmental problem owing to its negative impact on agricultural productivity and sustainability. Nanoparticles (NPs) have recently been highlighted for their ability to alleviate salinity stress. The current study aimed to alleviate salt stress by using silicon (Si) and selenium (Se) NPs on the growth and physiological attributes of Physalis alkekengi L. Plants were irrigated with saline water at 50, 100, and 200 mM NaCl, and Si NPs (200 mg L -1 ) and Se NPs (50 mg L -1 ) were sprayed on leaves three times in a pot experiment in 2022. Leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content, antioxidant capacity, and fatty acid (FA) profile of fruits were measured to find the effects of NPs and salinity in the plants. Salinity at 50 mM did not significantly differ from the control, but at 100-200 mM, salt stress had a substantial impact on the majority of traits. Compared with non-saline conditions, 200 mM NaCl led to decreases in shoot weight (40%), fruit weight (30%), Chl a (30%), Chl b (39%), anthocyanin (31%), ascorbic acid (16%), total phenolic content (TPC, 11%) but increases in total soluble solids (TSS, 79%), titration acidity (TA, 17%), and TSS/TA (52%) in plants without spraying the NPs. However, Si and Se NPs modulated salinity stress by increasing shoot and fruit weight, Chl content, anthocyanin, and TPC, and with decreasing TSS and TSS/TA. Salinity elevated polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and lowered monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). According to multivariate analysis, 50 mM and control were found to be in the same cluster, whereas 100 and 200 mM were shown to be in different clusters. Foliar application of Si and Se NPs at 200 and 50 mg L -1 , respectively, can be recommended for mitigating salt stress at 100-200 mM NaCl in P. alkekengi L. Plants. UV-A- or UV-B-enriched growth light was given to basil plants at non-stress-inducing intensities. UV-A-enriched growth light gave rise to a sharp rise in the expression of PAL and CHS genes in leaves, an effect that rapidly declined after 1-2 days of exposure. On the other hand, leaves of plants grown in UV-B-enriched light had a more stable and long-lasting increase in the expression of these genes and also showed a stronger increase in leaf epidermal flavonol content. UV supplementation of growth light also led to shorter more compact plants with a stronger UV effect the younger the tissue. The effect was more prominent in plants grown under UV-B-enriched light than in those grown under UV-A. Parameters particularly affected were internode lengths, petiole lengths and stem stiffness. In fact, the bending angle of the 2nd internode was found to increase as much as 67% and 162% for plants grown in the UV-A- and UV-B-enriched treatments, respectively. The decreased stem stiffness was probably caused by both an observed smaller internode diameter and a lower specific stem weight, as well as a possible decline in lignin biosynthesis due to competition for precursors by the increased flavonoid biosynthesis. Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have recently attracted a lot of attention after being tested in various agricultural plants. This paper reports the green synthesis of CeO 2 NPs and SiO 2 NPs from leaf extracts of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. The physical characteristics of the produced nanoparticles were then determined using UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Presence of residues on food commodities is major bottleneck of insecticide use under good agricultural practices (GAPs). The use of less persistent with two different mode of action insecticide is novel approach of getting maximum insect control without developing insecticide resistance. Novaluron, an insect growth disruptor and lambda cyhalothrin, a nerve poison has been used widely for the management of lepidopteran pests. Dissipation and consumer risk analysis studies were carried out on a new combination product of novaluron and lambda cyhalothrin are used for control insects of tomato at recommended standard dose of 71 + 14 g/ha and double dose of 142 + 28 g/ha of active ingredients. Extraction and cleanup of sample residues was done using QuEChERS technique and analyzed in GC-ECD. The residues of novaluron were dissipated within 10 to 15 days, and the residues of lambda cyhalothrin were at 7 to 10 days, both at the standard and double the standard dose, following a first order reaction kinetics. Overcoming the challenge of more frequent and extreme weather events holds importance in agricultural production. We take spring frost disasters as a representative extreme weather event to identify how perennial economic crop farmers adjust the quantity of organic fertilizer used in response to extreme weather events and their adjustment mechanism. In this study, we establish a conceptual framework for the adaptation mechanism of apple growers under extreme weather events. This article draws and verifies five hypotheses through on-site investigations of apple growers in Shaanxi Province, China. Empirical evidence shows that farmers increase the quantity of commercial organic fertilizer materials in the year and in the following year when spring frost occurs, indicating that their adaptative behavior can be subdivided into repair and prevention. Mechanism analysis shows that liquidity constraints impact farmers' adaptive behavior. Liquidity constraints limit the ability of farmers to increase the quantity of commercial organic fertilizer materials to adapt to a spring frost disaster. Furthermore, for farmers not constrained by liquidity constraints, household resource endowment conditions still affect their adaptive behavior. Significantly, the household labor force size mainly influences farmers to increase commercial organic fertilizer to adapt to a spring frost disaster. Our findings highlight the differences between the adaptive behavior mechanism of perennial crop farmers and food crop farmers. Tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) is a secondary pollutant that causes oxidative stress in plants due to the generation of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Phenylpropanoid metabolism is induced as a usual response to stress in plants, and induction of key enzyme activities and accumulation of secondary metabolites occur, upon O 3 exposure to provide resistance or tolerance. The phenylpropanoid, isoprenoid, and alkaloid pathways are the major secondary metabolic pathways from which plant defense metabolites emerge. Chronic exposure to O 3 significantly accelerates the direction of carbon flows toward secondary metabolic pathways, resulting in a resource shift in favor of the synthesis of secondary products. Furthermore, since different cellular compartments have different levels of ROS sensitivity and metabolite sets, intracellular compartmentation of secondary antioxidative metabolites may play a role in O 3 -induced ROS detoxification. Plants' responses to resource partitioning often result in a trade-off between growth and defense under O 3 stress. These metabolic adjustments help the plants to cope with the stress as well as for achieving new homeostasis. In this review, we discuss secondary metabolic pathways in response to O 3 in plant species including crops, trees, and medicinal plants; and how the presence of this stressor affects their role as ROS scavengers and structural defense. Modeling plants for biomass production and metal uptake from surrounding environment is strongly dependent on the moisture content of soil. Therefore, experiments were conducted to find out how soil moisture affects the phenotypic traits, photosynthetic efficiency, metabolic profile, and metal accumulation in the hyperaccumulating ecotype of Sedum alfredii (S. alfredii). A total of six water potential gradients were set: 0 ~ -15 kPa (T1), -15 ~ -30 kPa (T2), -30 ~ -45 kPa (T3), -45 ~ -60 kPa (T4), -60 ~ -75 kPa (T5), and -75 ~ -90 kPa (T6). Different water potential treatments had a significant effect on plant growth and metal uptake efficiency. Compared to T3, T2 was more effective in promoting plant growth and development, with an increase in biomass of 23% and 17% in both fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW), respectively. T2 and T3 had the highest cadmium (Cd) content in the shoot (280.2 mg/kg) and (283.3 mg/kg), respectively, whereas T1 had the lowest values (204.7 mg/kg). Cd availability for plants in the soil was affected by moving soil moisture cycles. Changes in soil moisture that were either too high or too low compared to the ideal soil water content for S. alfredii growth resulted in a significant reduction in Cd accumulation in shoots. Tryptophan, phenylalanine, and other amino acids were accumulated in T5, whereas only tryptophan and phenylalanine slightly increased in T1. Sugars and alcohols such as sucrose, trehalose, mannitol, galactinol, and mannobiose increased in T5, while they decreased significantly in T1. Interestingly, in contrast to T1, the two impaired metabolic pathways in T5 (galactose and starch metabolism) were identified to be glucose metabolic pathways. Soil factors, especially metal elements in the soil, play a significant role in forming and accumulating secondary metabolites, which determine the medicinal properties of medicinal herbs. In this study, the concentrations of some metal elements (K, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Cr) in Cam Mountain and Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province, Vietnam, were determined using the XRF method. We simultaneously determined the total phenolic and flavonoid content of some medicinal herbs collected from the collected soil sample areas, thereby assessing the influence of these elements on the formation of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants. The results showed that K, Mn, and Cr were mainly concentrated in the topsoil and transition layers; Fe and Cu elements tended to concentrate in the transition layer and the subsoil when surveying the soil profile. K, Mn, Cu, and Cr concentrations were more focused in Tinh Bien area, while Fe and Zn had higher concentrations at Cam Mountain. Additionally, results from evaluating the relationship between the content of the elements in the soil and the content of two active compounds also showed the correlation regression model between Zn and flavonoid expression by level 4 at the 5% significance level. Intercropping leguminous plant species with non-legume crops could be an effective strategy to maintain soil fertility. Additionally, the application of nano-Zn and Fe in trace amounts can substantially improve the bioavailable fraction of Zn and Fe. We studied the effect of foliar application of some nanomaterials on the agronomic, physio-biochemical attributes under a radish/pea intercropping system. The radish and pea were sprayed with different nanomaterials (Zn-Fe nanocomposite, nZnO, and nanobiochar) at 0 and 50 mg L -1 concentrations. Results indicated that the growth parameters of radish were higher in intercropping than in monocropping, while pea growth was inhibited in intercropping compared with monocropping. The shoot and root length, fresh weight, and dry matter of radish were increased by 28-50%, 60-70%, and 50-56% by intercropping than monocropping. Foliar spray of nano-materials further increased the growth traits of intercropped radish, such as shoot and root length, fresh weight, and dry matter, by 7-8%, 27-41%, and 50-60%, respectively. Similarly, pigments such as chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids and the concentration of free amino acids, soluble sugars, flavonoids, and phenolics were differentially affected by intercropping and nanomaterials. The yield of the non-legume crop was increased by intercropping, whereas the legume crop exhibited significant growth inhibition due to competitive interactions. Key Message: Extensive crosstalk exists among ABA and different phytohormones that modulate plant tolerance against different abiotic stress. Being sessile, plants are exposed to a wide range of abiotic stress (drought, heat, cold, salinity and metal toxicity) that exert unwarranted threat to plant life and drastically affect growth, development, metabolism, and yield of crops. To cope with such harsh conditions, plants have developed a wide range of protective phytohormones of which abscisic acid plays a pivotal role. It controls various physiological processes of plants such as leaf senescence, seed dormancy, stomatal closure, fruit ripening, and other stress-related functions. Under challenging situations, physiological responses of ABA manifested in the form of morphological, cytological, and anatomical alterations arise as a result of synergistic or antagonistic interaction with multiple phytohormones. This review provides new insight into ABA homeostasis and its perception and signaling crosstalk with other phytohormones at both molecular and physiological level under critical conditions including drought, salinity, heavy metal toxicity, and extreme temperature. The review also reveals the role of ABA in the regulation of various physiological processes via its positive or negative crosstalk with phytohormones, viz., gibberellin, melatonin, cytokinin, auxin, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, brassinosteroids, and strigolactone in response to alteration of environmental conditions. Human urine concentrates 88% of the nitrogen and 50% of the phosphorus excreted by humans, making it a potential alternative crop fertilizer. However, knowledge gaps remain on the fate of nitrogen in situations favouring NH 3 volatilization and on the availability of P from urine in soils. This study aimed at identifying the fate of nitrogen and phosphorus supplied by human urine from source separation toilets in a calcareous soil. To this end, a spinach crop was fertilized with 2 different doses of human urine (170 kgN ha -1  + 8.5 kgP ha -1 and 510 kgN ha -1  + 25.5 kgP ha -1 ) and compared with a synthetic fertilizer treatment (170 kgN ha -1  + 8.5 kgP ha -1 ) and an unfertilized control. The experiment was conducted in 4 soil tanks (50-cm depth) in greenhouse conditions, according to a randomized block scheme. We monitored soil mineral nitrogen over time and simulated nitrogen volatilization using Hydrus-1D and Visual Minteq softwares. We also monitored soil phosphorus pools, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (CNP) in microbial biomass, soil pH and electrical conductivity. Only an excessive input of urine affected soil pH (decreasing it by 0.2 units) and soil conductivity (increasing it by 183%). The phosphorus supplied was either taken up by the crop or remained mostly in the available P pool, as demonstrated by a net increase of the resin and bicarbonate extractable P. Ammonium seemed to be nitrified within about 10 days after application. However, both Visual Minteq and Hydrus models estimated that more than 50% of the nitrogen supplied was lost by ammonia volatilization. Overall, our results indicate that direct application of urine to a calcareous soil provides available nutrients for plant growth, but that heavy losses of volatilized nitrogen are to be expected. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a positive effect on plant development and being a promising way to enhance crop productivity and as substitution of chemical fertilizers. Selenium (Se) is an important trace element and its intake is usually lower than the daily minimum amount required for humans; hence, there is a demand on the design of Se biofortification strategies. Here, the genetic traits known to be associated with Plant-Growth Promotion (PGP) and Se biotransformation of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 were evaluated through genome analysis. Its growth-promoting capacity was tested through plant-growth promotion assays in laboratory and field conditions, using Brassica juncea (indian mustard), Beta vulgaris (chard), and Lactuca sativa (lettuce). Additionally, the Se biotransformation ability of Exiguobacterium sp. S17 was evaluated and the obtained selenized bacteria were tested in mustard plants. The sequenced bacteria genome revealed the presence of multiple genes involved in important functions regarding soil and plant colonization, PGP and Se biotransformation. Moreover, it was demonstrated that Exiguobacterium sp. S17 enhanced plant growth and could be useful to produce Se accumulation and biofortification in accumulator plants such as mustard. The quality of groundwater in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh is poorly studied despite the fact that it is the only supply of water for both drinking and irrigation and people use it without any pre-treatment. The evaluation of groundwater quality and suitability for drinking and irrigation is presented in this study. Groundwater samples were collected and analysed by standard neutralisation and atomic emission spectrophotometry for major anions (HCO 3 - , SO 4 2- , Cl - , F - , NO 3 - ), cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , K + ), and heavy metals (Cd, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Pb). The geographic information system (GIS) and statistical inferences were utilised for the spatial mapping of the groundwater's parameters. The potential water abstraction (i.e. taking water from sources such as rivers, streams, canals, and underground) for irrigation was assessed using the sodium absorption ratio (SAR), permeability index (PI), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), and Na percentage. According to the findings, the majority of the samples had higher EC, TDS, and TH levels, indicating that they should be avoided for drinking and irrigation. The positive correlation coefficient between chemical variability shows that the water chemistry of the studied region is influenced by geochemical and biological causes. According to the USSL (United States Salinity Laboratory) diagram, most of the samples fall under the C2-S1 and C3-S1 moderate to high salt categories. Some groundwater samples were classified as C4-S3 class which is unfit for irrigation and drinking. This study suggests that the groundwater in the study area is unfit for drinking without treatment. Recently, the production of silver nanoparticles and their commercial products has generated increased concern and caused a hazardous impact on the ecosystem. Therefore, the present study examines the toxic effect of chemically engineered silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped silver nanoparticles (PVP-SNPs) on the earthworm Eudrilus eugeniae (E. eugeniae). The SNPs and PVP-SNPs were synthesized, and their characterization was determined by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The toxicity of SNPs and PVP-SNPs was evaluated using E. eugeniae. The present result indicates that the lethal concentration (LC 50 ) of SNPs and PVP-SNPs were achieved at 22.66 and 43.27 μg/mL, respectively. The activity of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was increased in SNPs compared to PVP-SNPs. Importantly, we have noticed that the E. eugeniae can amputate its body segments after exposure to SNPs and PVP-SNPs. This exciting phenomenon is named "autotomy," which describes a specific feature of E. eugeniae to escape from the toxic contaminants and predators. Microplastics are the new emerging pollutants ubiquitously detectable in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Fate and behavior, as well as ecotoxicity, are of increasing environmental concern, particularly in sediments and soils as natural sinks. For a global environmental risk assessment, reliable and easy to apply analytical methods are mandatory to obtain comparable data. This is based on the isolation of microplastics out of the solid sample matrices prior to instrumental detection. Thus, this study provides an easy to apply approach for density separation. The technique emerged from a comparative study using different salt solutions to isolate conventional, and for the first time biodegradable, microplastics from different solid sample matrices, i.e., sand, artificial soil, and compost. Four solutions (water, sodium chloride, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium bromide) of different densities were applied followed by oxidizing digestion. Finally, the impact of the procedures on size and surface properties of microplastics was tested. Dependent on the sample matrix, the highest recovery rates of 87.3-100.3% for conventional polymers, and 38.2-78.2% for biodegradable polymers, were determined with sodium bromide. The effects of foliar supply of silicon nanoparticles (Si-NPs) on growth, physiology, and cadmium (Cd) uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were examined in different soil moisture levels. Seeds were sown in soil containing excess Cd (7.67 mg kg -1 ) and Si-NPs were applied through foliar dressing with various levels (0, 25, 50, 100 mg L -1 ) at different time intervals during growth period. Initially, all pots were irrigated with normal moisture level (70% water-holding capacity) and two moisture levels (35%, 70% WHC) were initiated after 6 weeks of plant growth for remaining growth duration and harvesting was done after 124 days of sowing. The results demonstrated the lowest plant growth, yield, and chlorophyll concentrations while the highest oxidative stress and Cd concentrations in plant tissues in water-stressed control (35% WHC) followed by normal control (75% WHC). Si-NPs enhanced the growth, photosynthesis, leaf defense system, and Si concentrations in tissues while minimized the Cd in wheat parts particularly in grains either soil normal or water-stressed conditions. Of the foliar spray, 100 mg L -1 of Si-NPs showed the best results with respect to growth, Cd and Si uptake by plants, and soil post-harvest bioavailable Cd irrespective of soil water levels. In grain, Cd concentration was below threshold limit (0.2 mg kg -1 ) for cereals in 100-mg kg -1 Si-NPs treatment irrespective of soil water levels. Si-NPs foliar dressing under Cd and water-limited stress might be an effective strategy in increasing growth, yield, and decreasing Cd concentration in wheat grains under experimental conditions. A three-compartment culture system was used to study the mechanism by which the AM fungus Funneliformis mosseae influences host plant growth and soil organic carbon (SOC) content in a northwest China coal mining area. A 13 CO 2 pulse tracing technique was used to trace the allocation of maize photosynthetic C in shoots, roots, AM fungus, and soil. Carbon accumulation and allocation in mycorrhizal (inoculated with Funneliformis mosseae) and non-mycorrhizal treatments were detected. AM fungal inoculation significantly increased the 13 C concentration and content in both above- and below-ground plant parts and also significantly enhanced anti-aging ability by increasing soluble sugars and catalase activity (CAT) in maize leaves while reducing foliar malondialdehyde content (MDA) and leaf temperature and promoted plant growth. AM fungi also increased P uptake to promote maize growth. Soil organic carbon (SOC), glomalin, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and nitrogen (MBN) contents increased significantly after inoculation. A mutually beneficial system was established involving maize, the AM fungus and the microbiome, and the AM fungus became an important regulator of C flux between the above- and below-ground parts of the system. Photosynthesis vs. light curves (LCs) have played a central role in photosynthesis research for decades. They are the commonest form of describing how photosynthesis responds to changes in light, being frequently used for characterizing photoacclimation. However, LCs are often interpreted exclusively regarding the response to light intensity, the effects of time of exposure not being explicitly considered. This study proposes the use of 'hysteresis light curves' (HLC), an experimental protocol focused on the cumulative effects of light exposure to obtain information on the time dependence of photosynthetic light responses. HLC are generated by exposing samples to a symmetrical sequence of increasing and decreasing light levels. The comparison of the light-increasing and the light-decreasing phases allows the quantification of the hysteresis caused by high-light exposure, the magnitude and direction of which inform on the activation, and subsequent relaxation of high-light-induced photosynthetic processes. HLCs of the chlorophyll fluorescence indices rETR (relative electron transport rate of photosystem II) and Y(NPQ) (index of non-photochemical quenching) were measured on cyanobacteria, algae, and plants, with the aim of identifying main patterns of hysteresis and their diversity. A non-parametric index is proposed to quantify the magnitude and direction of hysteresis in HLCs of rETR and Y(NPQ). The results of this study show that HLCs can provide additional relevant information on the time dependence of the light response of photosynthetic samples, not obtainable from conventional LCs, useful for phenotyping photosynthetic traits, including photoacclimation state and kinetics of light activation and relaxation of electron flow and energy dissipation processes., (© 2022. Key Message: The causal gene, CaHY5 of a chemical induced green-hypocotyl mutant was identified by molecular mapping. CaHY5 regulates anthocyanin accumulation by directly binding to the promoter of genes in anthocyanin pathway. Morphological markers at seedling stage are useful indicators for F 1 hybrid seeds screening. Pepper is a worldwide vegetable with diverse uses, and F 1 hybrids are popular in the pepper industry. Hypocotyl color is a useful marker to identify F 1 hybrid seeds. However, most pepper accessions have purple hypocotyl caused by anthocyanin accumulation, while green hypocotyl pepper accessions are rare. In this study, we identified a green hypocotyl mutant (e1898) from a pepper ethylmethanesulfonate (EMS) mutant library. By combining bulked segregant RNA-seq (BSR), genome resequencing and recombinant analysis, it was found that CaHY5 is the causal gene of this mutant. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of CaHY5 resulted in the decrease of anthocyanin accumulation in pepper hypocotyls. RNA-seq data showed that many genes related to anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport decreased significantly in the mutant. Yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) assays showed that CaHY5 can bind to the promoter of CaF3H, CaF3'5'H, CaDFR, CaANS and CaGST, which are important genes in anthocyanin biosynthesis or transport. Our results indicate that CaHY5 directly regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport, thus governing anthocyanin accumulation in pepper hypocotyl. The beneficial effect of compost and compost tea on plant growth and protection is mainly associated with the microbial diversity and the presence of bacteria with plant growth-promoting effect. PGPR are considered as eco-friendly bio-fertilizers that may reduce the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Three composts (AT, A10, and A30) were previously prepared from industrial wastes (olive mill wastewater, olive pomace, coffee ground, and phosphogypsum). In the present study, we isolated three bacterial strains from the compost teas. The phylogenetic identification of these bacterial strains (B.AT, B.A10, and B.A30) showed that they correspond to Serratia liquefaciens (B.AT and B.A10) and Achromobacter spanius (B.A30) species. A further characterization of the PGPR traits of these bacteria showed that they produce siderophore, exopolysaccharides, and IAA. Their effect on potato plant growth, yields, and tuber quality was performed under field culture conditions. Results showed that these strains can be characterized as PGPR, the best effect on potato plant growth was observed with Serratia liquefaciens (B.AT), the best yield and tuber quality was observed with Serratia liquefaciens (B.A10) while bacterial treatment with Achromobacter spanius (B.A30) is a Cd-tolerant PGPR., (© 2022.
