This paper explores the understanding of gender in the scientific production on racial identity in the Brazilian geography. To achieve this goal, a survey was carried out at the Brazilian Geography Observatory, which currently has 25,437 catalogued papers from 1939 to 2019. The keywords that guided the search were: raça, racialidade, negro, negritude, etnicidade, etnia, quilombo, quilombola, indígena, comunidade tradicional, originária, índio, étnicoracial, movimento negro and Lei 10.639 (race, racial identity, black people, blackness, ethnicity, ethnic origin, quilombo, quilombola, indigenous people, traditional community, origin, indigenous person, ethnicracial, black movement, and the Law 10,639). Four hundred and fiftytwo papers were found. Gender characteristics in the authorship were explored, as well as the institutional origin and the impact factor of the publications using the H index. The results evidenced a male predominance in the authorship on racial identities, and also showed that the discussion has been mainly developed in the centerwest and southeast of the country.
