This book focuses on scientific terminology and phraseology in research papers in the domains of new technologies which remain to be highly specialized means of communicating. It approaches scientific communication both from the theoretical and practical perspective with the use of corpus linguistics methodology. The current study is a holistic and comprehensive approach to message construction starting from the macrostructure of a research paper, via terminology and phraseology, ending with the pragmatic aspects, all of which contribute to communicating research results.The book will be an indispensable aid for language researchers and translators as well as anyone interested in scientific communication, particularly in technical and empirical domains.

The Book of Proceedings features a selection of papers presented at the 54th Linguistics Colloquium: “Linguistic Encoding / Decoding in Global Contexts,” held from September 19th-22nd, 2019, at the Institute of Foreign Languages, Moscow City University (Moscow, Russia). The volume includes 23 papers covering a range of linguistic topics, including cognitive semantics, historical linguistics, stylistics, pragmatics, translation studies, and communication studies.

The papers compiled in the present volume reflect the key theme of the most recent Duo Colloquium sessions – contextuality. The psychological notion of context has been central to translation research for decades, and it has evolved along with the development of translational thought, translation types and tools. The theme of contextuality can be understood at any level, from the geopolitical to the textual, and embraced by both academic and professional considerations of translational and interpreting phenomena. It is centred on context, contexts and/or decontextualisation in translation and interpreting theory and practice from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Discussing the above-mentioned notions is the subject of the present volume.

This volume presents and discusses the prerequisites, mechanisms and results of linguistic variation and diversity. This begins with linguistic and cultural contacts and extends through historical and geographical conditions as well as communicative practices in the online and offline domain to social and socio-cultural developments, including language policy. Research into linguistic variation and diversity is carried out using contrastive, cognitive, didactic, and translational approaches with a particular focus on lexicology, semantics, and grammar.

En La Historia de la lengua, la dialectología y el concepto de cambio lingüístico en el pensamiento de Eugenio Coseriu se estudia el pensamiento del lingüista rumano desde el punto de vista histórico. El análisis tiene como punto de partida la tesis básica de Sincronía, diacronía e historia, a saber, el hecho de que el cambio lingüístico ha sido, a lo largo de la historia de la lingüística, un pseudoproblema y, en consecuencia, ha habido una serie de consecuencias en la reflexión en torno a esta ciencia. A partir de ahí se dan dos tipos de trabajos. Por un lado, los que tienen un carácter sobre todo teórico, que puede llegar a convertirse en aportaciones al conocimiento sobre la historia de la lingüística. Por otro lado, hay varios estudios sobre la repercusión de la dialectología en el desarrollo de la historia de las lenguas, específicamente el español.

The Philosophical Transactions and the letters preserved in the Royal Society's archives provide precious insights into the making of science and the workings of the Republic of Letters in the early and late modern periods. This book investigates the Royal Society's relations with Italy through a socio-historical and critical linguistic analysis of the papers concerning Italian research published in the Transactions and of the epistolary exchanges between the Society's Fellows and Italian scholars. The aim, from the linguistic perspective, is to describe the features and development of papers based on Italian research published in the journal, as well as the discursive aspects that characterise the exchanges between the two countries. Ultimately, from the historical and cultural point of view, the study will provide a picture of the development of Anglo-Italian relations in scientific context from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century.

The aim of this book is to provide a comparative analysis of intra- and inter- linguistic features, setting a benchmark for future typological studies. It contrasts cognitive and functional aspects of causative, agent-deprofiling, and resultative constructions in two typologically distant languages: English and Urdu. The detailed nature of the contrastive analysis opens doors for future research on the complexities of each construction and, by extension, of both languages. The study is framed within the field of cognitively-oriented constructionist approaches to language, specifically within the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), proposed by Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal. With its cross-linguistic dimension, it develops central aspects of this model at the argument-structure level and provides evidence of the role of high-level metaphor and metonymy in the motivating grammatical phenomena.

This volume is a collection of papers written over the course of forty years. It examines political attitudes, patterns of political behavior, and institutional framework of transition to democracy in Poland. Its contents have been shaped by and provide commentary on the often-dramatic political developments in Poland: the emergence of the massive liberation movement “Solidarity” in 1980–81; the dissent against the communist regime in the 1980s; the struggles to pave the roads toward consolidated democracy in the 1990s; and the problems with adaptation to European liberal values in the 21st century that led to democratic backsliding. In conclusion, it presents the cultural and structural background of the cleavage between the proponents of open society and its enemies.

At this point, the aim is to automate the realization of this whole process to the greatest possible extent. In this context, the important developments in the last 20 years have been focusing on business intelligence, big data, deep learning, reinforcement learning, data intelligence, decision intelligence, automated decision-making, and other concepts and the development of application tools. From this point of view, under the title of “Data-driven decisions in enterprises – implications for business education and cases,” papers collected from various universities worldwide are included in this conference proceedings.

This volume expands the discussion on the language management (LM) framework through two themes: interests and power, which are driving forces of the LM process, observable and describable at every step. It consists of thirteen contributions analyzing diverse situations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Authors focus on a range of topics, including the role of language ideologies in various types of institutions, such as higher education institutions and language cultivation centers, the struggle to maintain minority languages, the positions of the actors involved in the process of making policies concerning foreign language teaching, or the processes that learning and choosing to use foreign languages entail. All papers of this edition give an opportunity for reflection on the chances, challenges and difficulties associated with the long-term transformation of higher education and scientific activities. Therefore, the concept of “scientific excellence” has been perceived as a guiding idea in the academics'efforts. On the other hand, it seems to be an ideal that can never be achieved but towards which one ought to strive persistently. Furthermore, the pursuit of excellence is accompanied by contradictions which have been pointed out many times in the history of academia in Poland. This publishing series embodies the belief in the existence of the so-called invisible college, i.e., the research community, exemplified by young scientists starting their academic path inspired by recognized professors.

The Festschrift volume consists of 42 contributions by 55 authors from 13 countries. The papers, written in Catalan, English, French, Russian and Spanish, treat data from these and some other languages (Arabic, BCS [Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian], Czech, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, Upper Kuskokwim Athabaskan [Alaska], Shughni [Pamir]). They pertain to virtually all branches of'core'synchronic linguistics (with occasional excursions into diachrony, literary theory, philology and religious studies): semantics, lexicology / lexicography, syntax and morphology. Some are more theoretically minded while others are focused on pedagogical and / or computational applications of language models, particularly those of the Meaning-Text theory. Linguistic Landscape studies examine language(s) in public spaces. This study focuses on the interplay of language, space and sociocultural context: Yaoundé's Linguistic Landscape is examined with respect to its multilingual and multimodal nature. Next to a sociolinguistic framework, a (socio)cognitive analysis is also put centre stage.

This book presents the first large-scale investigation of the structure and functions of linguistic impoliteness and impoliteness metalanguage in contemporary British children's fiction. The study ties together findings from pragmatics, language acquisition research, literary studies, and translation studies with novel data-driven insights. The study shows that children's fiction prefers direct, unmitigated impoliteness tokens to highlight key aspects of plot and characterisation. Impoliteness metalanguage is used to clarify impoliteness events to the child. The study provides a framework for the investigation of impoliteness in translation, which gives evidence of pragmatic differences, as well as differing views of children's cognitive abilities in two linguacultures.

This book contains a selection of papers on issues of current interest in syntax and morpho-syntax. Most topics pertain to the question of the relation between word order and syntactic structure. The discussion starts with a proposal of extending the theory of relativization to reason clauses. It continues with the analysis of the realization of focus in Basque and the discussion of current views on the syntax of cleft constructions. Next, an inquiry into the rigidity of sentence left-periphery is offered in a cross-linguistic perspective. The two final contributions discuss feature-free derivations in syntax applied to a single morpho-syntactic problem, and the question of gradient acceptability of Polish sentences featuring possessive items in the context of the competition between their reflexive and pronominal forms.

Der Band enthält Analysen zur Geschichte und Kultur zweier Nachbarstaaten, ihrer Verflechtungen und Gegensätze von 1848/49 über den Ersten Weltkrieg, Faschismus und Nationalsozialismus bis in die Gegenwart. Die Beiträge verbindet die Frage, wie Italiener:innen und Deutsche Geschichte zu „machen'oder ihr zu entgehen versuchten und wie sie sie reflektierten. Sie reichen von ironischer Brechung der Nationsbildung im Roman, von Frauen und Monarchen als Akteure 1848/49, über Divenkult vor 1914, die Wahrnehmung des frühen Faschismus durch deutsche Juden und den Versuch, jüdische Reformpädagogik von 1933 trotz Staatsrassismus in Italien fortzusetzen, bis hin zu SS-Propaganda im besetzten Norditalien und dem Leben italienischer Zwangsarbeiter in Berlin. Für die Zeit nach 1945 geht es um Demokratisierungen, auch in den Geschichtswissenschaften, Italiens Prägung durch kommunistische Kultur, die viele Deutsche anzog, den Vergleich Süditalien-Ostdeutschland und die Erinnerung an Mussolini heute.

At the beginning of 2020, the Polish justice system faced an unprecedented challenge due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to reduce face-to-face contact, limit the activities of public institutions and introduce remote work forced the legislator to fundamentally restructure the model of civil proceedings. This book describes the changes to the law introduced between 2020 and 2024 in the field of civil proceedings, focusing on the COVID-19 Special Act. The research objective was to analyse the provisions introduced in the COVID-19 Special Act and to verify whether they comply with the standard of a fair trial under the Polish Constitution, the ECHR and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU. The aim of the study was also to analyse the practice of application of the discussed institutions by the courts and to assess whether they should become a permanent part of Polish law after the pandemic, and under what conditions.

La littérature contemporaine et les arts du spectacle semblent être fascinés du mal. Si l'on regarde de plus près certaines productions (littéraires, théâtrales et cinématographiques), on remarque vite l'omniprésence du mal sous toutes ses formes possibles : le mal physique (meurtres, viols, tortures et souffrances, sadisme), le mal psychique (cruauté, tortures psychiques), le mal moral (crimes et fautes), le mal métaphysique (inhérent à la nature du monde imparfait), enfin le mal lié au discours du pouvoir (corruption, mensonge, violence, atteinte à la liberté d'expression, violation des droits de l'homme, pratique de la torture, « raison d'État »). D'où vient cette véritable obsession contemporaine du mal et comment définir ce phénomène transculturel, transhistorique et transdisciplinaire? Notre monographie collective ne constitue qu'une tentative modeste de cerner les contours du phénomène en question, fascinant et repoussant à la fois.

Sportsprachen-Forschung ist für die Südosteuropaforschung bisher ein Desiderat. Der Begriff Sportsprachen umfasst zunächst die Sprachen aller Sportarten. Ferner geht es um die Sprache des Sports selbst. Zentral ist hier der Wortschatz, mittels dem Professionelle und Laien über Sport sprechen, zudem aber auch die Sprache der Fans (Zuschauer•innen), der Sprachgebrauch in den Regelwerken, in Fach- Populärliteratur, sowie in Berichterstattung und Kommentaren rund um Sport. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes widmen sich insbesondere dem Fachwortschatz in Ost- und Südosteuropa und nutzen dafür vielfältige Quellen. Neben historischen und etymologischen Fragen behandeln die Autor•innen auch Sportsprachen in den aktuellen Medien und unter sozialpolitischen Aspekten. Das Thema wird fachlich kontextualisiert durch einen Beitrag zur Fußballsprache im Allgemeinen und durch Artikel von und über den hochverdienten albanologischen Linguisten Gianni Belluscio, der mit diesem Band posthum gewürdigt wird.

The book scrutinizes the language of Polish-origin Highlanders living in CarpathianBukovina. Krasowska has personal, direct knowledge of the life, culture, customs, andbehaviors of the group. Among many interesting conclusions she draws from the analysis,she considers how the influence of different languages spoken in Bukovina affectsthe vocabulary from specific thematic spheres, for example the religious vocabulary, vocabularyconnected to logging and terrain, popular foods, clothing, farming and animalbreeding, or official (state) vocabulary. A significant part of the Highlanders'vocabularyare “carpathisms,” namely words used in different regions of the Carpathians.

The book presets Polish administrative judiciary as part of institutional environment of the economy. Polish administrative judiciary system, tasked with controlling the legality of the public administration activities, took its current form in 2004. It contain 16 first instance courts and the Supreme Administrative Court. Contrary to the ordinary judiciary in Poland, this system is managed by the judge - the President of the SAC – not the Minister of Justice. The book blends multiple approaches – from first-hand historical account of the creation and reforms of the administrative courts system, through quantitative analysis of its performance to the qualitative analysis of the court verdicts trends, including the dialogue of administrative courts with domestic Constitutional Tribunal and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Authors of the chapters include Supreme Administrative Court judges, scholars and practicing lawyers.

Nicht nur die Medien Fotografie, Karikatur, Werbegrafik, Bildband und Dokumentarfilm werden in den Blick genommen, sondern auch die jeweiligen Urhebenden sowie die Archive, Verlage, Wirtschaftsunternehmen und Ausstellungshäuser, die sie bewahren und präsentieren. Anhand von ethnologischen, geschichts- und medienwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen wird untersucht, wie Bildmedien und -institutionen aktiv Einfluss auf die gegenseitige Wahrnehmung von Deutschen, Tschechen und „Sudetendeutschen“ nehmen.

Foundational theories of meaning, and the broader metasemantic projects they contribute to, promise to answer the seemingly simple yet intractable question of what meaning consists in and where it comes from. Naturally, they build upon expressions that we already know and recognize to develop their positions. This focus on language as we know it, however, leaves aside the no less significant matter of language in terms of possible expressions – the strange and distant expanses of language beyond our everyday stock of expressions.This work sets out to explore possibilities in the context of the meaning of simple expressions. In the process, words, phrases, and sentences are thoroughly explicated as types of expressions before being leveraged to engineer unique and unusual possible words. These exotic possibilities are then confronted with two major positions on meaning in philosophy, introducing novel difficulties and suggesting the significance of this otherwise neglected perspective on language.

Throughout the history of Public Relations, many academics and professionals have been concerned about the social function of the discipline. One of the research focuses that persists, now more than ever from various points of view, is on the relevance of communication strategies in processes of social change. This focus derives from the European doctrine of Public Relations whose main reference is Lucien Matrat, focused on the social subject. Even Ferguson, addressing a perspective from management, highlights that to understand relationships it is required not only to understand the communication process and its effects, but also to understand the different actors within the communication process and their social context. One of the priorities, and at the same time emerging challenge for public relations leaders, is how to address diversity and multiculturalism in the public sphere, society and organizations from this anthropological perspective. This topic provides the possibility of a broad and interesting debate that can enrich research on the management of relationships between different social actors.

Digitale Inhalte wie Software oder E-Books prägen den modernen Alltag. Als Reaktion auf diese Entwicklung erließ die EU im Mai 2019 die Digitale-Inhalte-Richtlinie. Sie enthält Vorgaben für Verträge zwischen Unternehmer:innen und Verbraucher:innen über die Bereitstellung digitaler Inhalte. Da digitale Inhalte meist durch das Urheberrecht geschützt sind, gehen diese Verträge häufig mit der Einräumung urheberrechtlicher Nutzungsrechte mittels End User License Agreements einher. Diese sogenannten EULAs schränken den Umfang der zulässigen Nutzung oft stark ein. Die Autorin befasst sich mit der Frage, wie gängige Nutzungsbeschränkungen in EULAs durch die Digitale-Inhalte-Richtlinie und das Urheberrecht beurteilt werden, ob es zu Abweichungen in der Beurteilung kommt und welche Auswirkungen sich daraus ergeben können. Als Fundament dieser Untersuchung dient die Analyse des generellen Konfliktpotenzials zwischen Urheber- und Verbrauchervertragsrecht im digitalen Umfeld.

This Dictionary is the first etymological dictionary of English imitative (onomato-poeic, mimetic) words. Imitative words (e.g. crash, bang, achoo) are words with iconic correlation between form and meaning, iconicity being a relationship of resemblance. The dictionary provides extensive information on English words of imitative origin and uncovers patterns in their diachronic development. Each entry of the altogether 1320 dictionary entries includes data on pronunciation, part of speech, source of sound, type of imitated sound, iconic word class, date of first attestation, frequency of use, origin, etymology, degree of form-meaning correspondence (stage of de-iconization), as well as a brief account of form and meaning changes. The entries also illustrate the modern usage by typical examples of the word in a sentence (the data were extracted from contemporary dictionaries and corpora of the English language) and references to relevant etymological dictionaries which confirm their imitative status.
