Purpose: In this paper, we present age-standardized cancer incidence and mortality rates in the Faroe Islands. We also compare with the Nordic rates and show incidence rate ratios (IRR) and mortality rate ratios (MRR). Materials and methods: The Faroese cancer registry (FCR) was established in 1994, with incidence available from 1960 and mortality from 1983. The FCR is a part of the NORDCAN collaboration, where the different Nordic countries all report anonymized cancer data by standardized methods, ensuring comparability. Validation efforts revealed that 13% of cases had not been reported to the FCR from 2006 to 2019, emphasizing the need for continued validation efforts of cancer registries. After validation, we submitted the updated cancer cases to NORDCAN and now present this data, taken directly from the NORDCAN website (2019 data). Results: We found that the incidence of the summary group all cancers in the Faroe Islands increased from 1960 to 2019, while cancer mortality decreased from 1983 to 2019. Comparisons with Nordic rates showed significantly lower IRRs for cancer in all cancers, bladder and urinary tract, and skin cancer for both sexes, while IRR was lower for breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Contrary, IRR was higher for rectum and kidney cancer in women and esophagus and testicular cancer in men. There was an increased MRR for cancer in female organs, bladder and urinary tract, and kidney cancer in women, and esophagus and pancreas cancer in men. In contrast, malignant hematopoietic diseases and melanoma in women had a lower MRR. Conclusions: Cancer incidence in the Faroe Islands was lower than in the other Nordic countries. Of particular interest, the incidence of testicular cancer saw a steep increase during the last 20 years, and an investigation into possible causes for this is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: Radiotherapy for vulvar carcinoma is challenging due to relatively high risk of locoregional disease recurrence, a technically challenging target, and postoperative lymphocele, and a high risk radiation sequelae. We aim to explore, if it is possible to reduce dose to normal tissue, while maintaining CTV coverage for this patient group with online adaptive radiotherapy. Materials and methods: 20 patients with vulvar carcinoma (527 fractions) were treated with online adaptation on a Varian Ethos accelerator. Setup CBCTs were acquired daily for adaptive planning. Verification CBCTs were acquired immediately prior to dose delivery. CTV dose coverage and dose to bladder and rectum were extracted from the scheduled and adapted plans as well as from adapted plans recalculated based on verification CBCTs. In addition, analysis of the decision of the adaptive procedure was performed for 17 patients (465 fractions). Results: Mean CTV D95% and standard deviation was 98% ± 5% for the scheduled plan compared to 100.0 ± 0.3% and 100.0 ± 0.8% for the adapted plan on the setup and verification CBCT respectively. Dose to OARs varied substantially and did not show any benefit from adaption itself, however a margin reduction was implemented after the first patients treated. The adapted plan was chosen for 63.5% of the fractions and dominant reasons for not adapting were 'no significant dosimetric gain' (75 fractions, 14%) and 'Medical doctor (MD) not available for treatment' (50 fractions, 9.5%). The median adaption time was 15 min and the 25th and 75th percentile was 12 and 17 min, respectively. Introduction: Professional visual artists constitute a heterogeneous vocational group, including, but not limited to painters, photographers, textile artists, and sculptors who may face exposure to workplace hazardous substances and lifestyle factors that may contribute to the development of selected cancers. The objective of this registry-based cohort study was to assess the cancer incidence among Nordic visual artists. Materials and methods: This study is based on data from the Nordic Occupational Cancer (NOCCA) project that combines census data of 15 million people from all Nordic countries and cancer registries from 1961 to 2005. For the present study we selected a cohort of visual artists from Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analyses were conducted with the cancer incidence rates for the entire national study populations used as reference rates. Results: In male visual artists, there were statistically significant excesses in cancers of the tongue (SIR 2.91, 95% confidence interval 1.74-4.55), oral cavity (2.09, 1.26-3.27), pharynx (2.18, 1.45--3.15), testis (1.91, 1.11-3.05), renal pelvis (2.48, 1.42-4.03) and bladder (1.33, 1.14-1.55). The risk was significantly decreased for cancers of the lip (0.45, 0.18-0.93) and stomach (0.65, 0.50-0.84). In female visual artists, the only significantly increased risk was observed for breast cancer (1.29, 1.13-1.48) and the only significantly decreased risk for stomach cancer (0.43, 0.17-0.88). The incidence of lung cancer was close to the population average in both sexes. Conclusions: The non-elevated incidence of lung cancer suggests a similar prevalence of smoking between visual artists and the general population, while the elevated risk of cancers of mouth and pharynx among male visual artists is suggestive of more widespread alcohol drinking. The excess risk of urogenital cancers might be associated with exposure to solvents. NOVELTY & IMPACT The exposure of visual artists to carcinogens remains unstudied and equivocal. The current study suggests that visual artists carry an overall cancer risk that is slightly above the risk among the general population of the four Nordic countries. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adjustment disorder (AjD) are common in hematological cancer patients as they face severe stressors during their serious disease and often intensive treatment, such as stem cell transplantation (SCT). Aims of the present study were to provide frequency and risk factors for PTSD and AjD based on updated diagnostic criteria that are lacking to date. In a cross-sectional study, hematological cancer patients were assessed for stressor-related symptoms via validated self-report questionnaires based on updated criteria for PTSD (PCL-5) and AjD (ADMN-20). Frequency and symptom severity were estimated among the total sample and SCT subgroups (allogeneic, autologous, no SCT). SCT subgroups were compared using Chi-squared-tests and ANOVAs. Linear regression models investigated sociodemographic and medical factors associated with symptomatology. In total, 291 patients were included (response rate: 58%). 26 (9.3%), 66 (23.7%) and 40 (14.2%) patients met criteria for cancer-related PTSD, subthreshold PTSD and AjD, respectively. Symptom severity and frequency of criteria-based PTSD and AjD did not differ between SCT subgroups (all p > 0.05). Factors associated with elevated symptomatology were younger age (PTSD: p < 0.001; AjD: p = 0.02), physical comorbidity (PTSD: p < 0.001; AjD: p < 0.001) and active disease (PTSD: p = 0.12; AjD: p = 0.03). Based on new criteria, a considerable part of hematological cancer patients reports PTSD and AjD symptoms. Insulin resistance is a critical cause of metabolic dysfunctions. Metabolic dysfunction is common in patients with cancer and is associated with higher cancer recurrence rates and reduced overall survival. Yet, insulin resistance is rarely considered in the clinic and thus it is uncertain how frequently this condition occurs in patients with cancer. To address this knowledge gap, we performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis guided by the Preferred Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. We included studies assessing insulin resistance in patients with various cancer diagnoses, using the gold-standard hyperinsulinemic–euglycemic clamp method. Studies eligible for inclusion were as follows: (1) included cancer patients older than 18 years of age; (2) included an age-matched control group consisting of individuals without cancer or other types of neoplasms; (3) measured insulin sensitivity using the hyperinsulinemic–euglycemic clamp method. We searched the databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for articles published from database inception through March 2023 with no language restriction, supplemented by backward and forward citation searching. Bias was assessed using funnel plot. Fifteen studies satisfied the criteria. The mean insulin-stimulated rate of glucose disposal (Rd) was 7.5 mg/kg/min in control subjects (n = 154), and 4.7 mg/kg/min in patients with a cancer diagnosis (n = 187). Thus, the Rd mean difference was −2.61 mg/kg/min [95% confidence interval, −3.04; −2.19], p<.01). Heterogeneity among the included studies was insignificant (p=.24). These findings suggest that patients with a cancer diagnosis are markedly insulin resistant. As metabolic dysfunction in patients with cancer associates with increased recurrence and reduced overall survival, future studies should address if ameliorating insulin resistance in this population can improve these outcomes thereby improving patient care. The net effect of menopausal hormone therapy on the risk of death is understudied, and current evidence is conflicting. Our aim was to investigate the association between menopausal hormones and risk of all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer-specific mortality, based on the Swedish Prescribed Drug Registry and National Patient Registry. This Swedish population-based matched cohort study included all women, 40 years or older, who had received at least one prescription of systemic menopausal hormone therapy between 2005–2014 (n = 290,186), group level matched 1:3 to non-users (n = 870,165). Multivariable conditional logistic regression models estimated the relative risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality, adjusting for several clinical factors and comorbidities. Ever-use of menopausal hormones was associated with a slightly lower overall odds of all-cause (OR = 0.97, 95%CI 0.95–0.98) and cardiovascular (OR = 0.97, 95%CI 0.95–0.99) mortality, whilst 30% lower overall odds of cancer-related mortality (OR = 0.70, 95%CI 0.68–0.72) was shown. The odds of all-cause and cancer-related mortality were consistently reduced among women who began menopausal hormone therapy ≤60 years, whereas the association with cardiovascular mortality was inconsistent. In contrast, oestrogen-only therapy was associated with elevated odds of all-cause (OR = 1.14, 95%CI 1.11–1.16) and cardiovascular mortality (OR = 1.04, 95%CI 1.01–1.06) among women who began treatment at ≥70 years. Among current users, oestrogen-only therapy was associated with higher odds of all-cause (OR = 1.48, 95%CI 1.44–1.52) and cardiovascular mortality (OR = 1.24, 95%CI 1.20–1.28), whereas past use of oestrogen-only therapy suggested lower odds of mortality. Our generalisable data suggest that early menopausal hormone treatment initiation does not increase the odds of mortality. Altered miRNA expressions are assigned pathogenic properties in several cancers including mycosis fungoides and could play a role in the early onset of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine disease-specific miRNA expression in early-stage mycosis fungoides patch and plaque lesions. A quantitative real-time PCR platform of 384 human miRNAs was used to study miRNA expression in 154 diagnostic mycosis fungoides biopsies. A total of 110 miRNAs were significantly differentially expressed (>2-fold, p < 0.05) between plaque lesions and healthy controls, and 90 miRNAs (>2-fold, p < 0.05) differed between patch lesions and healthy controls. Moreover, 13 miRNAs differed in expression between patch and plaque lesions. Early-stage mycosis fungoides exhibited miRNA features that overlapped with those of psoriasis. However, 39 miRNAs, including miR-142-3p, miR-150 and miR-146b, were specific to mycosis fungoides. In conclusion, early-stage mycosis fungoides expresses a distinct miRNA profile, indicating that miRNAs could play a role in the early development of mycosis fungoides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most prevalent and distressing symptoms among cancer patients, resulting in a great cancer research challenge. Numerous systematic reviews of physical training interventions have been conducted to find the most effective approach. However, evidence remains fragmented, and in which cancer population physical training is more effective than other populations is still unclear. Thus, this study critically appraised systematic reviews and meta-analyses on physical training to reduce adults' cancer-related fatigue. A systematic review of systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42020189049), assessing the efficacy of exercise training for reducing cancer-related fatigue in adults, was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, and Pedro. The selected studies (standardized mean difference, SMD; 95%CI), was quantitatively pooled using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was tested using chi-squared (Q) and I-square statistics (I2). Of 1438 identified articles, 11 met the inclusion criteria, and ten were meta-analyzed. The results yielded a positive effect of physical training on fatigue in all cancer populations, SMD = −0.33 (−0.43, −0.23). Subgroup analysis based on tumor localization showed a slightly higher physical training effect on fatigue in adults with breast cancer, SMD = −0.36 (−0.57, −0.15), and prostate cancer SMD = −0.34 (−0.45, −.0.22). Our analysis demonstrated some potential improvement in cancer-related fatigue in adult patients undergoing physical training during and after cancer treatments, particularly in patients with breast or prostate cancer. There is increasing evidence that the inactivated influenza vaccine contains immunostimulatory properties that favor cytotoxicity and benefit survival in large population-based studies. This study aimed to determine whether an influenza vaccine was associated with risk of recurrence, overall mortality, and disease-free survival in patients undergoing curative surgery for colorectal cancer. We performed a register-based study based in Denmark in the period 2009–2015. The primary outcome was a risk of recurrence, while the secondary outcomes were overall mortality and disease-free survival. A total of 9869 patients were included, with 5146 patients receiving an influenza vaccine between one year before and six months after surgery. In a multivariate Cox regression model, there was no association with risk of recurrence (HR 0.94, 95% CI 0.85–1.05), overall mortality (HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.87–1.03), and disease-free survival (HR 1.01, 95% CI 0.94–1.09). In patients receiving the vaccine between six and twelve months before surgery, we found an association to decreased risk of recurrence (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.67–0.91) but no association with overall mortality (HR 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17) or disease-free survival (HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.88–1.07). Subgroup analysis of patients revealed contradictory results. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is an established prognostic marker in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Currently, the role of HPV in sinonasal carcinoma is being explored. This systematic review addresses the role of HPV in sinonasal cancer, establishing the occurrence of HPV-positive cancers and the influence of HPV-positivity on prognosis in sinonasal cancer as well as the utility of the putative surrogate marker of HPV (p16) in sinonasal cancer. Studies were identified with searches of Medline via PubMed and Embase via OVID (4 May 2020). Articles on original research concerning sinonasal cancer and HPV in humans written in English were included. Case reports with less than five cases were excluded. Initially, 545 articles were identified; 190 duplicate articles were removed leaving 355 articles for title/abstract screening. Title/abstract screening excluded 243 articles, leaving 112 studies assessed for eligibility. After full-text screening, 57 studies were included. All articles investigated the significance of HPV in sinonasal carcinomas. HPV was reported in approximately 30% of sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC), where it was associated with a better prognosis. In sinonasal cancer, p16 is associated with diagnostic pitfalls and a putative utility of p16 in SNSCC has yet to be established. HPV was not frequently reported in other types of sinonasal carcinomas, besides the recently described subtype, HPV-dependent Multiphenotypic Sinonasal Carcinoma. In other types of sinonasal carcinoma, HPV is not frequently found. Approximately 30% of SNSCC are HPV-positive. HPV-positivity in SNSCC is associated with improved survival. HPV occurs only rarely in other sinonasal cancers. There is currently not sufficient evidence for p16 as a surrogate marker of HPV in SNSCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infertility is a well-known sequela of cancer treatment. Despite guidelines recommending early discussions about risk of fertility impairment and fertility preservation options, not all patients of reproductive age receive such information. This study aimed to investigate young adult cancer patients' receipt of fertility-related information and use of fertility preservation, and to identify sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with receipt of information. A population-based cross-sectional survey study was conducted with 1010 young adults with cancer in Sweden (response rate 67%). The inclusion criteria were: a previous diagnosis of breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, brain tumor, lymphoma or testicular cancer between 2016 and 2017, at an age between 18 and 39 years. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. A majority of men (81%) and women (78%) reported having received information about the potential impact of cancer/treatment on their fertility. A higher percentage of men than women reported being informed about fertility preservation (84% men vs. 40% women, p <.001) and using gamete or gonadal cryopreservation (71% men vs. 15% women, p <.001). Patients with brain tumors and patients without a pretreatment desire for children were less likely to report being informed about potential impact on their fertility and about fertility preservation. In addition, being born outside Sweden was negatively associated with reported receipt of information about impact of cancer treatment on fertility. Among women, older age (>35 years), non-heterosexuality and being a parent were additional factors negatively associated with reported receipt of information about fertility preservation.
