Traffic accidents are a leading cause of premature death for citizens, with millions of injuries and fatalities occurring annually. Due to the fact that a large proportion of accidents are caused by red light running, reduction of the frequency of red light running (RLR) has been extensively researched in recent years. However, most of the previous studies have focused on reducing RLR frequency through driver education or warning sign design, with little attention paid to the relationship between RLR behavior and traffic signal control. Considering RLR is significantly affected by the number of vehicles arriving during yellow, it is possible to identify RLR behaviors in advance by analyzing data on yellow-arriving vehicles. Meanwhile, based on the strong correlation between yellow arriving and RLR frequency, it is possible to reduce RLR by traffic signal control. In this paper, we propose a quantitative model of correlation between RLR frequency and yellow light arrival based on high-resolution traffic and signal event data from Twin Cities, Minnesota. On this basis, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is implemented to find trade-offs between minimizing the RLR frequency and the traffic delay. A case study of a 6-intersection arterial road reveals that in unsaturation, saturation, and supersaturation flow, our approach can converge to a Pareto optimal front in 30–50 iterations, which shows that is possible to simultaneously reduce RLR frequency and enhance traffic efficiency safety, which is conducive to ensuring the life safety of traffic participants. The risk of nitrate contamination became a reality for Fairmont in Minnesota, when water rich in NO3-N exceeded the drinking water standard of 10 mg/L. This was unexpected because this city draws its municipal water from a chain of lakes that are fed primarily by shallow groundwater under row-crop land use. Spring soil thaw drives cold water into a subsurface pipe where almost no NO3-N reduction occurs. This paper focuses on NO3-N reduction before the water enters the lakes and no other nitrogen management practices in the watershed. A novel denitrifying bioreactor was constructed behind a sediment forebay, which then flowed into a chamber covered by a greenhouse before entering a woodchip bioreactor. In 2022 and 2023, water depth, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were measured at several locations in the bioreactor, and continuous NO3-N was measured at the entry and exit of the bioreactor. The results showed better performance at a low water depth with lower dissolved oxygen and higher water temperature. The greenhouse raised the inlet temperature in 2022 but did not in 2023. The forebay and the greenhouse may have impeded the denitrification process due to the high dissolved oxygen concentrations in the influent and the stratification of dissolved oxygen caused by algae in the bioreactor. In this study, we assess COVID-19-related mortality in Minnesota and Wisconsin with the aim of demonstrating both the temporal dynamics and the magnitude of the pandemic's influence from an actuarial risk standpoint. In the initial segment of this paper, we discuss the methodology successfully applied to describe associations in financial and engineering time series. By applying time series analysis, specifically the autoregressive integrated with moving average methods (ARIMA), to weekly mortality figures at the national or state level, we subsequently delve into a marginal distribution examination of ARIMA residuals, addressing any deviation from the standard normality assumption. Thereafter, copulas are utilized to architect joint distribution models across varied geographical domains. The objective of this research is to offer a robust statistical model that utilizes observed mortality datasets from neighboring states and nations to facilitate precise short-term mortality projections. In the subsequent section, our focus shifts to a detailed scrutiny of the statistical interdependencies manifesting between Minnesota and Wisconsin's weekly COVID-19 mortality figures, adjusted for the time series structure. Leveraging open-source data made available by the CDC and pertinent U.S. state government entities, we apply the ARIMA methodology with subsequent residual distribution modeling. To establish dependence patterns between the states, pair copulas are employed to articulate the relationships between the ARIMA residuals, drawing from fully parametric models. We explore several classes of copulas, comprising both elliptic and Archimedean families. Emphasis is placed on copula model selection. Student t-copula with the marginals modeled by non-standard t-distribution is suggested for ARIMA residuals of Minnesota and Wisconsin COVID mortality as the model of choice based on information criteria and tail cumulation. Freshwater mussels are threatened with extirpation in North America. They are a sentinel species for ecosystem function and contribute towards many ecosystem services. As mussels require clean water to survive, and since conserving ecosystem services is implicit in the federal Clean Water Act, incorporating mussel conservation into state water policies could serve multiple conservation goals. In this paper we conduct a comprehensive critical review of three topics related to freshwater mussels: their contribution to ecosystem services, their links with water quality, and threats to their survival from water pollutants and extent of protection available from regulation. In so doing, we identify gaps between the water quality requirements of mussels and the protection provided by current water regulation to help inform clean water and conservation goals in Minnesota. We find freshwater mussels to be generally sensitive to a wide variety of pollutants, and particularly to nutrients such as total nitrogen and total phosphorus and to major ions such as chloride. In addition, we find that current state water quality standards may not be sufficiently protective of mussels. We formulate a framework for determining an effective conservation strategy for mussels in Minnesota based on ecological and economic criteria to ensure adequate conservation at a reasonable cost. Wind is an abundant, yet intermittent, source of renewable energy, with speeds changing both spatially and temporally over a wide range of time scales. While wind variability is well documented on large meteorological time scales and the behavior of turbulent flow at high frequencies is well understood, there remain questions in the literature regarding the intermediate region of these domains. Understanding wind variability at the microscale, here considering a frequency range of 10−2 Hz < f < 1 Hz, is key for wind turbine control and modeling. In this paper, we quantify the variability of wind conditions for the meteorological tower at the Eolos wind research station in Minnesota using power spectral density analysis. Spectral analysis of wind samples with similar mean wind speeds was conducted to test the hypothesis that the wind spectrum's shape is independent of the mean wind speed. Historical wind speed data were compared and evaluated to identify diurnal, seasonal, and interannual trends in the spectrum of wind at frequencies above 10−3 Hz. We conclude that the shape of the wind spectrum is independent of the mean wind speed following the Kolmogorov −5/3 law for turbulent flows for incoming wind, with some variations in slope and spectrum magnitude. While no conclusive diurnal, seasonal, or interannual trends were observed, it is shown that some variations in both slope and spectrum magnitude can occur on these time scales. The dominant wavelength and hue angle can be used to quantify the color of lake water. Understanding the water color is important because the color relates to the water quality and its related public perceptions. In this paper, we compared the accuracy levels of two methods in calculating dominant wavelength and hue angle values using simulated satellite data calculated from in situ reflectance hyperspectra for 325 lakes and rivers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The methods developed by van der Woerd and Wernand in 2015 and Wang et al. in 2015 were applied to simulated sensor data from the Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and Landsat 8 satellites. Both methods performed comparably when a correction algorithm could be applied, but the correction method did not work well for the Wang method at hue angles < 75°, equivalent to levels of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM, a440) > ~2 m−1 or chlorophyll > ~10 mg m−3. The Sentinel-3 spectral bands produced the most accurate results for the van der Woerd and Wernand method, while the Landsat 8 sensor produced the most accurate values for the Wang method. The distinct differences in the shapes of the reflectance hyperspectra were related to the dominant optical water quality constituents in the water bodies, and relationships were found between the dominant wavelength and four water quality parameters, namely the Secchi depth, CDOM, chlorophyll, and Forel–Ule color index. The threat of anthropogenic eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in lakes requires the development of innovative stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the external loading of phosphorus (P). This paper presents the findings of a 5-year study of a full-scale P removal structure constructed in Minnesota, USA with spent lime drinking water treatment residual (DWTR), a by-product of water softening at a local water treatment plant. Influent and effluent water samples were collected by auto-samplers during 43 storm events during the growing season. Samples were analyzed for P constituents, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Toxicity of the effluent was assessed using Ceriodaphnia dubia. Flow-weighted removal effectiveness was calculated for each storm event. Overall, the spent lime DWTR reduced total P loading by 70.9%, dissolved reactive P by 78.5%, dissolved P by 74.7%, and TSS by 58.5%. A significant reduction in heavy metals was also observed. Toxicity tests indicated the aquatic toxicity of the effluent treated with spent lime DWTR was not different from untreated stormwater. This study provided long-term real-world data that demonstrated that a full-scale P removal structure with spent lime DWTR significantly reduced P and other pollutants in stormwater discharging to an urban lake. The means to accurately monitor wetland change over time are crucial to wetland management. This paper explores the applicability of LandTrendr, a temporal segmentation algorithm designed to identify significant interannual trends, to monitor wetlands by modeling surface water presence in Minnesota from 1984 to 2019. A time series of harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 data in the spring is developed in Google Earth Engine, and calculated to sub-pixel water fraction. The optimal parameters for modeling this time series with LandTrendr are identified by minimizing omission of known surface water locations, and the result of this optimal model of sub-pixel water fraction is evaluated against reference images and qualitatively. Accuracy of this method is high: overall accuracy is 98% and producer's and user's accuracies for inundation are 82% and 88% respectively. Maps summarizing the trendlines of multiple pixels, such as frequency of inundation over the past 35 years, also show LandTrendr as applied here can accurately model long-term trends in surface water presence across wetland types. However, the tendency of omission for more variable prairie pothole wetlands and the under-prediction of inundation for small or emergent wetlands suggests the algorithm will require careful development of the segmented time series to capture inundated conditions more accurately. Simple Summary: Biliary tract cancers, which include cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder, and ampulla of Vater cancers, are a significant health concern due to their increasing incidence and poor survival rates. Using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, this study tracks changes in incidence and survival rates among residents aged 20 and over in Olmsted County, Minnesota from 1976 to 2018. The findings illustrate a rise in overall biliary tract cancers from 6.53 cases to 10.25 cases per 100,000 person-years between 1976 and 2018 (p = 0.004). The incidence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma has significantly increased from 0.25 to 3.93 per 100,000 person-years over the four decades, with a more pronounced increase observed in males, while gallbladder cancer incidence has decreased among women. Despite improvements in median survival times from 4.2 months to 10.8 months over the four decades (p = 0.019), the overall prognosis remains very poor. This study highlights the evolving epidemiology of these cancers and the critical need for enhanced diagnostic and treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes. Biliary tract cancers, including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder, and ampulla of Vater cancers, rank second among hepatobiliary cancers, known for their poor prognoses. The United States has witnessed a notable increase in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma incidence. This study examines the incidence and survival outcomes of biliary tract cancers in Olmsted County, Minnesota from 1976 to 2018. Using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP), residents aged 20 and above were analyzed across four eras. Incidence rates were calculated and adjusted for age and sex, and temporal trends were assessed using Poisson regression. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma exhibited a significant escalation in incidence rates over time, while gallbladder cancers showed a decline among women. Median survival times for biliary tract cancers notably improved. These findings confirm the rising incidence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and suggest improving survival rates. The phenomena of global climate change and comprehensive urban expansion have precipitated significant and unprecedented transformations in landscape patterns. To enhance the assessment of these spatio−temporal changes and their driving forces at a regional level, we developed a comprehensive landscape index (CLI) to quantify these patterns and conducted a detailed analysis of the spatio−temporal variations in Minnesota over the last two decades. Our analysis of the CLI was conducted by examining both its quantitative relationships and spatial distribution patterns. The findings indicate a consistent increase in Minnesota's CLI over this period, marked by an escalation in landscape fragmentation and diversity, alongside a decline in landscape connectivity. Temporally, the CLI experienced a notable shift in 2010. Spatially, the clustering characteristics of landscape patterns have largely remained stable. Our analysis reveals that the CLI is most sensitive to total population (POP) and gross domestic product (GDP) factors, underscoring the significant impact of human activity on landscape patterns. Notably, the explanatory capacity of interactions between factors is substantially greater than that of individual factors, with the GDP and vegetation structure (VS) interaction demonstrating the greatest influence on the spatial distribution of landscape patterns. Rivers across the globe experience and respond to changes within the riparian corridor. Disturbance of the riparian corridor can affect warmwater, intermediate, and coldwater streams, which can negatively influence instream physical structure and biological communities. This study focused on assessing the influence of the riparian habitat on instream structure within the Whitewater River, a coldwater stream system within an agricultural watershed in southeastern Minnesota, USA. To understand the influence of the riparian zone on the physical instream habitat, twenty variables (riparian, n = 9; instream, n = 11) were measured at 57 sites across three forks of the Whitewater using a transect method every 10 m across a 150 m reach. We used a modified Wentworth scale approach to assess coarse and fine substrates to describe habitat conditions. Canonical correlation detected significant associations between riparian and instream variables across the river forks, and indicated that wider riparian buffers, more bank grass and shrubs, longer overhanging vegetation, limited bare soil, and more rocks on banks were significantly associated with increased instream cover, high levels of coarse substrates with reduced embeddedness, increased pool habitats, and reduced fine sediments. In contrast, excessive fine sediments, lack of riffle habitat, reduced coarse substrates, and high width to depth ratios indicative of an impaired instream habitat were associated with narrow riparian buffers and high percentages of bare soil on banks. Riparian corridors have the capacity to enhance and protect physical instream habitats and overall ecosystem health when managed properly. Wide, grassy riparian corridors with stable banks, overhanging vegetation, and limited shade from trees should protect and/or enhance the instream physical habitat, providing the structural diversity favored by aquatic communities. We recommend revising the current Best Management Practices to include monitoring for impairments in the riparia, while promoting and developing good land stewardship with private landowners which can be effective in improving river ecosystems in agricultural settings. Suspended and deposited sediments in streams can interfere with filter-feeding caddisfly larvae by reducing feeding sites and feeding efficiency, potentially lowering the densities, growth rates, and secondary production of an important trout prey. We conducted field studies at multiple stream sites with differing suspended-sediment loads, and a laboratory study was conducted under controlled conditions; together, these were designed to examine the role of suspended sediments in the population dynamics and behavior of Brachycentrus occidentalis (Trichoptera: Brachycentridae) larvae in a Minnesota, USA, trout stream. Stream sites that had elevated turbidities and elevated levels of suspended sediments also had significantly more fine bottom substrates and higher substrate embeddedness. In addition, Brachycentrus densities were reduced, growth rates were slower, secondary production was reduced, and the overall benthic macroinvertebrate taxa richness was lowest at the site with the highest suspended-sediment loading. Colder water temperatures at one site also influenced Brachycentrus production. In 24 h laboratory studies conducted in recirculating aquaria, the feeding activities of Brachycentrus larvae were reduced and their positioning altered under high turbidities (500 nephelometric turbidity units, NTU) relative to low turbidities (50 NTU or lower). High suspended-sediment loads have adversely affected filter-feeding caddisfly larvae by embedding and burying preferred coarse feeding substrates, altering their feeding positions and movements during the highest flows, and potentially impacting densities, growth rates, and secondary production. Understanding rain, ground, and surface water interactions in riparian zones is essential for hydrologic and environmental management. The novelty of this study lies in its revelation of isotopic shifts and consequent evaluation of hydrologic pathways and processes within the forested riparian zones of three distinct streams, valleys, and riparian systems in a carbonate-sandstone incipient karst landscape. We collected water samples from three southeastern Minnesota catchments: Trout Brook, Crystal Creek, and Bridge Creek. A Picarro L2130i was used to measure δ18O for oxygen, and δD for deuterium in units of ‰ (per mil). We estimated the global meteoric line for the study sites, built upon aquifer age dating, and explored aquifer transit time for the study sites using a simple seasonal amplitude model. The results showed small amplitudes for 2020 and 2021, suggesting that bedrock aquifer water was the primary source water with a mean core transit time greater than 10 years. All three catchments were different but had similar bedrock valley types and riparian sediment. The primary driving factor was the seasonal precipitation input mixing with existing water. In a normal to wetter year, the isotopic data showed larger amplitude shifts between seasons with trendlines that adjusted depending on the temperature of the new water additions. The proposed approach is valuable in revealing complex hydrologic processes and pathways and can contribute extensively to the planning and management of karst riparian systems. The origin of highly permeable flow paths in carbonate-siliciclastic rocks, such as large-aperture fractures in aquifers in the Eastern Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (EBCB), is poorly understood. The karst potential was assessed from the rock carbonate content and the degree of disintegration after leaching in HCl. Surprisingly, dissolution of calcite in EBCB usually did not lead to rock disintegration until calcite > 78%. Instead, porosity increased significantly. High-porosity rock is held together by microns-thick secondary silica cement with a foam-like structure and considerable tensile strength. Three types of conduits occur in the EBCB: (i) bedding-parallel conduits associated with calcite-rich layers, (ii) subvertical fracture swarm conduits that develop on damaged zones of fracture swarms, and (iii) conduits formed by dissolution of calcite veins by groundwater flow. These are ghost-rock karst features where calcite is leached from the rock in the first phase and the residue is washed out by conduits under steep hydraulic gradients in the second phase. Very similar features have been described in Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA. Research has shown that fractures with sharp-edged walls that give the impression of an extensional tectonics origin may actually be ghost-rock karst features in which dissolution and piping have played an important role in their enlargement. Wastewater-based epidemiology provides an approach for assessing the prevalence of COVID-19 in a sewer service area. In this study, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was measured in 44 wastewater-treatment plants of varying sizes that sampled approximately 67% of the population of Minnesota, from September 2020 through December 2022. Various linear regression models were investigated to predict the weekly case count from SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations under various transformation and normalization methods which we validated via cross-validation averaged across all treatment plants. We find that the relationship between COVID-19 incidence and SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater may be treatment plant-specific. We study storage and time-to-analysis for RNA wastewater data and find large effects of storage temperature, indicating that collection methods may have an important effect on the utility and validity of wastewater data for infectious disease monitoring. The use of strobilurin fungicides in agriculture has increased steadily during the past 25 years, and although strobilurins have minimal water solubility, they regularly appear in surface waters, at times in concentrations approaching toxic levels for aquatic life. The present study examined concentrations of strobilurin fungicides in designated trout streams draining an agricultural watershed in southeastern Minnesota, USA, where fungicides may have contributed to a recent fish kill. Water samples (n = 131) were analyzed for the presence of five different strobilurin fungicides (azoxystrobin, fluoxastrobin, picoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin). Samples were collected via grab and automated sampling during baseflow and stormflow events throughout an entire crop-growing season from sites on each of the three forks of the Whitewater River. Detection frequencies for the five strobilurins ranged from 44 to 82%. Fluoxastrobin and pyraclostrobin concentrations were above known toxic levels in 3% and 15% of total samples analyzed, respectively. The highest concentrations were detected in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-August) samples, coincident with likely strobilurin applications. Lower concentrations were present in water samples collected during the nonapplication periods in spring and fall, suggesting groundwater–stream interactions or steady leaching of fungicides from watershed soils or stream sediments. Further study is required to determine strobilurin concentrations in sediments, soils, and groundwater. Better tracking and guidance regarding strobilurin use is necessary to adequately protect aquatic life as fungicide use continues to increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work considers the incorporation of renewable ammonia manufacturing sites into existing ammonia supply chain networks while accounting for ammonia price uncertainty from existing producers. We propose a two-stage stochastic programming approach to determine the optimal investment decisions such that the ammonia demand is satisfied and the net present cost is minimized. We apply the proposed approach to a case study considering deploying in-state renewable ammonia manufacturing in Minnesota's supply chain network. We find that accounting for price uncertainty leads to supply chains with more ammonia demand met via renewable production and thus lower costs from importing ammonia from existing producers. Maize gross primary productivity (GPP) contributes the most to the global cropland GPP, making it crucial to accurately estimate maize GPP for the global carbon cycle. Previous research validated machine learning (ML) methods using remote sensing and meteorological data to estimate plant GPP, yet they disregard vegetation physiological dynamics driven by phenology. Leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area (i.e., specific leaf nitrogen (SLN)) greatly affects photosynthesis. Its maximum allowable value correlates with a phenological factor conceptualized as normalized maize phenology (NMP). This study aims to validate SLN and NMP for maize GPP estimation using four ML methods (random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neutral network (CNN), and extreme learning machine (ELM)). Inputs consist of vegetation index (NDVI), air temperature, solar radiation (SSR), NMP, and SLN. Data from four American maize flux sites (NE1, NE2, and NE3 sites in Nebraska and RO1 site in Minnesota) were gathered. Using data from three NE sites to validate the effect of SLN and MMP shows that the accuracy of four ML methods notably increased after adding SLN and MMP. Among these methods, RF and SVM achieved the best performance of Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) = 0.9703 and 0.9706, root mean square error (RMSE) = 1.5596 and 1.5509 gC·m−2·d−1, and coefficient of variance (CV) = 0.1508 and 0.1470, respectively. When evaluating the best ML models from three NE sites at the RO1 site, only RF and CNN could effectively incorporate the impact of SLN and NMP. But, in terms of unbiased estimation results, the four ML models were comprehensively enhanced by adding SLN and NMP. Due to their fixed relationship, introducing SLN or NMP alone might be more effective than introducing both simultaneously, considering the data redundancy for methods like CNN and ELM. Agricultural activities within watersheds can have negative effects on river ecosystems, but numerous conservation practices can be implemented that reduce soil erosion, increase water infiltration, slow runoff, and improve soil quality. Our study focused on analyzing overall stream health (instream and riparian physical, instream biological) at 56 stream sites within an agricultural watershed (83,000 hectares, 70% croplands, and rangelands) in southeastern Minnesota, USA, with a 30+-year history of targeted conservation practices to protect local water resources of importance for tourism and recreation. After implementation of >900 best management practices (BMPs) over the last 20 years in the study subwatersheds, only 20% of the stream sites examined exhibited good stream health, and 40% were in poor condition, based on a combination of instream and riparian factors and aquatic community integrity. Time since implementation, location, and total coverage of BMPs within the relatively large subwatersheds all may have contributed to the apparently limited effectiveness of these conservation management practices toward producing observable improvements in stream health to date. Many indicators of stream health (e.g., fine sediments, sediment embeddedness, fish biotic integrity) differed significantly among subwatersheds, but those differences could not be explained by differences in numbers or coverages of BMPs in those subwatersheds. Longitudinal stream health patterns were similar among subwatersheds (moderate health in headwaters, poor in mid-reaches, good in lower reaches), likely due, in part, to similarities in locations of spring discharges and channel instability. New rules protecting stream riparia, maintenance of existing BMPs, and future BMPs targeting remaining problem areas should lead to improving stream health in this large watershed. Background: The inhibition of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with heart failure. The underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. The present prospective study investigates for the first time the effect of empagliflozin on various soluble markers of inflammation in patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods: We included 50 inpatients with HFrEF and diabetes mellitus type 2. A total of 25 patients received a therapy with the SGLT-2-inhibitor empagliflozin in addition to standard medication; the other 25 patients did not receive empagliflozin and were considered the control group. Quality of life, functional status and soluble immunological parameters in serum were assessed at baseline and after 3 months. Results: The baseline characteristics of both groups revealed no significant differences. Patients on empagliflozin demonstrated a significant improvement in the Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (baseline 44.2 ± 20.2 vs. 24 ± 17.7; p < 0.001), in distance in the 6-min walk test (baseline 343 ± 145 m vs. 450 ± 115 m; p < 0.001) and in soluble interleukin-6 level (baseline 21.7 ± 21.8 pg/mL vs. 13.7 ± 15.8 pg/mL; p = 0.008). There was no significant change of these or other parameters in the control group (p > 0.05 each). Conclusions: The empagliflozin-induced improvement of quality of life and functional capacity in patients with HFrEF and type 2 diabetes mellitus is accompanied by a substantial reduction of interleukin-6 levels. Measuring suspended sediment in fluvial systems is critical to understanding and managing water resources. Sampling suspended sediment has been the primary means of understanding fluvial suspended sediment. Specialized samplers, sampling methods, and laboratory methods developed by select U.S. Federal Agencies are more representative of river and stream conditions than commonly used grab sampling and total suspended solids (TSS) laboratory methods but are not widely used because they are expensive, time consuming, and not required as part of water quality standards in the United States. A new suspended-sediment sampling method called a depth-integrated grab (DIG) was developed by combining certain elements from both grab and depth-integrating sampling methods and suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) laboratory methods. The goal of the DIG method was to provide more accurate results than Grab-TSS while being easier and cheaper to sample than specialized samplers and methods. Approximately 50 paired comparison samples were collected at 9 sites in Minnesota from 2018 through 2019. Results showed no significant difference between the DIG and specialized sampling methods and a significant difference between both methods and the Grab-TSS method. The DIG-SSC provided an improved alternative to the Grab-TSS method, but additional research and testing is important to evaluate if this method is appropriate in different conditions than were observed in this study. The field of wildlife conservation is comprised of a variety of players with different contexts and approaches. Zoos and aquariums, historically largely focused on public entertainment, are shifting more towards conservation-minded missions and can play a unique role in wildlife conservation by leveraging their distinct assets. The Minnesota Zoo is an AZA-accredited institution and an agency of the State of Minnesota that has been conducting wildlife conservation for over 40 years. Here, we review our current portfolio of local field projects, including initiatives targeting pollinators, native mussels, turtles, and bison, using several considerations to structure and better understand how our unique context has shaped our work. Our designation as a state agency has impacted our initiatives by necessitating a focus on local efforts and has facilitated many partnerships with other government agencies. Indeed, partnerships have been vital to our success and have shaped our programs significantly since their inception. All of the Zoo's conservation initiatives are built on a bedrock of sound science, and we continue to contribute to the field through research, utilizing the expertise of department staff. In addition, the various funding streams that support our programs have dramatically shaped our work and have created some siloing of staff within the department. However, grant funding can serve as a buffer against the impacts of economic uncertainty, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lastly, our programs have expanded and our objectives have pivoted over the years in response to changing needs and opportunities; such flexibility—and increased flexibility for our staff—is imperative to the future success of these efforts. The Minnesota Zoo's narrative is unique and helps us understand how we can continue to most effectively carry out local conservation efforts. As we work to protect habitats and save species from extinction, it is important to utilize the distinct assets that each organization can contribute in order to have the greatest collective impact. George Floyd's murder by a Minnesota police officer sparked outrage, protests, and a re-evaluation of racial inequities in America. Within criminology, we argue, that re-evaluation should include the Latino Paradox, the idea that Latino communities are an exception—a paradox—in that, while they face economic deprivation, they also possess a magical something that makes them resistant to social problems like crime. Unfortunately, this compels the more delicate question; what is the deficiency in Black communities that makes them so vulnerable to crime? However, as we argue here, the Latino Paradox forces a false comparison. Its assumptions with respect to crime are factually incorrect, it demeans Blacks by neglecting their historical context, it romanticizes the Latino experience, and it misdirects policy making. It also leads to lazy theorizing by suggesting that the Latino Paradox forces a re-evaluation of a major criminology theory, Social Disorganization. Indeed, Social Disorganization Theory can adequately explain past and present links between immigration and crime. In light of these problems, it is time to drop the Latino Paradox as an explanation for the race/ethnic differences in crime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Winter oilseed cash cover crops are gaining popularity in integrated weed management programs for suppressing weeds. A study was conducted at two field sites (Fargo, North Dakota, and Morris, Minnesota) to determine the freezing tolerance and weed-suppressing traits of winter canola/rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and winter camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] in the Upper Midwestern USA. The top 10 freezing tolerant accessions from a phenotyped population of winter canola/rapeseed were bulked and planted at both locations along with winter camelina (cv. Joelle) as a check. To phenotype our entire winter B. napus population (621 accessions) for freezing tolerance, seeds were also bulked and planted at both locations. All B. napus and camelina were no-till seeded at Fargo and Morris at two planting dates, late August (PD1) and mid-September (PD2) 2019. Data for winter survival of oilseed crops (plants m−2) and their corresponding weed suppression (plants m−2 and dry matter m−2) were collected on two sampling dates (SD) in May and June 2020. Crop and SD were significant (p < 0.05) for crop plant density at both locations, and PD in Fargo and crop x PD interaction in Morris were significant for weed dry matter. At Morris and Fargo, PD1 produced greater winter B. napus survival (28% and 5%, respectively) and PD2 produced higher camelina survival (79% and 72%, respectively). Based on coefficient of determination (r2), ~50% of weed density was explained by camelina density, whereas ≤20% was explained by B. napus density at both locations. Camelina from PD2 suppressed weed dry matter by >90% of fallow at both locations, whereas weed dry matter in B. napus was not significantly different from fallow at either PD. Genotyping of overwintering canola/rapeseed under field conditions identified nine accessions that survived at both locations, which also had excellent freezing tolerance under controlled conditions. This article explores the notion of the classroom as a sacred space, through the lenses of Indigeneity and Waldorf-inspired practices to examine the ways pedagogical practices create spaces for learning and holistic well-being. Using a series of qualitative ethnographic studies highlighting courses at higher education institutions in Arizona and Minnesota, this article examines student reflections on experiences within the courses and curricula. Student responses point to conceptions of the course "rituals" that fostered emotional and mental wellness and contrasted these to courses in the "real world" that did the opposite. An online calculator is available to determine economic optimum nitrogen rate (EONR) for maize (Zea mays L.) production in the USA Corn Belt. For Minnesota, this calculator considers nitrogen (N) fertilizer cost, maize grain price and crop history, and produces a statewide N rate based on maximum economic return to N (MRTN). However, a clear precipitation and temperature gradient, and soil heterogeneity across the state, and recent changes in fertilizer cost and maize grain price require the comparison of EONR from this calculator with results from field study. The objectives of this research were to determine the agronomic and economic benefits of basal and split application of N fertilizer on maize grain yield and yield components and compare EONR from field study with N recommendation from the online calculator. The nitrogen fertilizer rate for the field study ranged from 0 to 224 kg N ha−1, either split or all applied at planting. The results showed that there were no interaction effects of N rate by time or N rate by year on maize grain yield. Maize grain yield had a quadratic response to N rate, and agronomic maximum grain yield peaked at 205 kg N ha−1. The EONR from the field study was 168 kg N ha−1 and it remained stable under a wide range of economic analysis scenarios with net benefit reaching up to 2474 USD ha−1. The N rate from the online calculator at MRTN was 151 kg N ha−1 and this rate may cause N deficiency in maize resulting in a yield penalty compared with the field study results. The field study was performed under specific soil and climatic conditions. Therefore, extensive research under various soil types, agronomic management practices and climatic conditions is warranted to evaluate the online calculator performance and its reliability as a precision tool for N fertilizer management in maize production. It is critical to gain insight into the responses of forest soils to the changing climate. We simulated future climate conditions with growing season throughfall reduction (by 50%) and winter snow removal using a paired-plot design across a soil drainage class gradient at three upland, Populus-dominated forests in northern Minnesota, USA. In situ bulk soil respiration and concentrations of extractable soil N were measured during the summers of 2020–2021. Soil respiration and N concentrations were not affected by throughfall reduction and snow removal, which was largely attributed to the limited treatment effects on soil moisture content and soil temperature. Drainage class was only a significant factor during the spring thaw period in 2021. During this period, the poorly drained plots had lower respiration rates compared to the well-drained plots, which was associated with the drainage class effects on soil temperature. The results of the companion laboratory incubation with varying levels of soil moisture also indicated no effect of the treatment on soil respiration, but effects of drainage class and moisture content on respiration were observed. Our results indicate that the combined effects of reduced summer and winter precipitation on soil respiration and N dynamics may be limited across the range of conditions that occurred in our study. Aims: Interventional transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TMVR) is an established treatment option for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and high operative risk. Cognitive impairment is one of the most common conditions among often extensive comorbidities in these patients. The specific patterns of cognitive decline and particularly the effect of TMVR are not well described. Thus, this study aimed to investigate into the impact of TMVR on cognitive impairment, exercise capacity, and quality of life. Methods: Cognitive function (executive, naming, memory, attention, language, abstraction, and orientation) was assessed with the standardized Montreal Cognitive Assessment test (MoCA; range between 0 and 30 points) before and 3 months after TMVR in 72 consecutive patients alongside echocardiographic examination and assessment of exercise capacity (six-minute walk test) as well as quality-of-life questionnaires (Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire, MLHF-Q). Results: Patients' median age was 81 [76.0; 84.5] years, 39.7% were female with a median EuroScore II of 4.4% [2.9; 7.7]. The assessment of cognitive function showed a significant improvement of the cumulative MoCA-Test result (from 22.0 [19.0; 24.5] to 24 [22.0; 26.0]; p < 0.001) with significant changes in the subcategories executive (p < 0.001), attention (p < 0.001), abstraction (p < 0.001), and memory (p < 0.001). In addition, quality of life (from 47.5 [25.0; 69.3] to 24.0 [12.0; 40.0]; p < 0.001) and exercise capacity (from 220.0 m [160.0; 320.0] to 280.0 m [200.0; 380.0]; p = 0.003) increased significantly 3 months after the TMVR procedure. Conclusions: TMVR leads to a significant improvement of cognitive function, exercise capacity, and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure in 3 months follow up and again highlights the benefit of the evermore established TMVR procedure for patients with high operative risk. Intensive agricultural activities have altered the hydrology of many Midwestern USA landscapes. Drain tiles (subsurface corrugated and perforated flexible tubing) has changed how and when water is discharged into the streams. Stable isotopes of oxygen (oxygen-18) and hydrogen (deuterium) were used to investigate hydrologic characteristics of three intensively managed agricultural landscapes in southern Minnesota (MN) and South Dakota (SD). Monthly δD and δ18O samples were collected across a climatic gradient from March 2016 to March 2018. Local meteoric water lines were established for the comparison of precipitation and evaporation magnitude from different sources at each location. These included vadose zone, phreatic zone, deep groundwater, tile drain, and river source waters. Two end-member hydrograph separation was performed at each site on selected dates to partition the shallow groundwater tile drainage contribution to streamflow. A lumped parameter modeling approach was applied to each dataset to investigate the mean transit time of water through different zones. Local meteoric water lines demonstrated differences in isotopic signatures due to the climate gradient to show the impact of low humidity and less rainfall. The hydrograph separation results showed that, from west South Dakota to eastern Minnesota, tile drains contributed about 49%, 64%, and 50% of the watershed streamflow. Precipitation took an average of 9 months to move through different pathways to end up in groundwater and an average of 4 months to end up in tile drains. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible prion disease of the cervidae family. ELISA and IHC tests performed postmortem on the medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RPLN) or obex are considered diagnostic gold standards for prion detection. However, differences in CWD transmission, stage of infection, pathogenesis, and strain can limit performance. To overcome these uncertainties, we used Bayesian statistics to assess the accuracy of RT-QuIC, an increasingly used prion amplification assay, to diagnose CWD on tonsil (TLN), parotid (PLN) and submandibular lymph nodes (SMLN), and ELISA/IHC on RPLN of white-tailed deer (WTD) sampled from Minnesota. Dichotomous RT-QuIC and ELISA/IHC results from wild (n = 61) and captive (n = 46) WTD were analyzed with two-dependent-test, one-population models. RT-QuIC performed on TLN and SMLN of the wild WTD population had similar sensitivity (median range (MR): 92.2–95.1) to ELISA/IHC on RPLN (MR: 91.1–92.3). Slightly lower (4–7%) sensitivity estimates were obtained from farmed animal and PLN models. RT-QuIC specificity estimates were high (MR: 94.5–98.5%) and similar to ELISA/IHC estimates (MR: 95.7–97.6%) in all models. This study offers new insights on RT-QuIC and ELISA/IHC performance at the population level and under field conditions, an important step in CWD diagnosis and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many forestry models require the input of stand size class information, a variable with multiple definitions across forest inventories. This work describes a crosswalk between stand age class and stand size class for several forest type groups in Minnesota to facilitate consistency and availability of the latter information. Refinements to the crosswalk include ratio adjustments that redistribute the number of plots (or hectares) from one estimated size class to another, based on known crosswalk error rates. The results showed that 61.9% of all plots were correctly classified, and 95.5% were within one size class. Correct classifications for individual forest type/size class combinations ranged from 16.7–79.2%. Applying the crosswalk to a validation dataset produced percent errors from −46.4% to 49.4%, but with the ratio adjustment, errors dropped to −20.1% to 14.4%. These results suggest that the crosswalk and ratio adjustments provide a coarse, yet reasonable, substitute to using more complex stand size classification methodologies, particularly when forecasting future stand conditions. If periodically outbreaking forest insects are a generic source of forest decline, then why do outbreaks recur more periodically than decline episodes? Do standard field survey data and proxy data systematically underestimate the complexity in herbivore population dynamics? We examine three sources of previously un-analyzed time-series data (population, defoliation, and tree-ring radial growth) for the forest tent caterpillar, Malacosoma disstria Hübner (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) feeding on trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx. (Salicaceae), in Minnesota, in order to answer these questions. Spatial pattern analysis of defoliation data indicated not only that outbreaks are roughly periodic, with a 10–13-y cycle, but also that important deviations from periodic led to large-scale episodes of aspen decline starting in the 1950s and 1960s, near Duluth and International Falls, respectively. By using additional data from Alberta, Canada we identify critical population and defoliation thresholds where defoliation becomes aerially detectable and impactful on tree growth. The threshold where defoliation becomes aerially detectable was found to be ~50% defoliation, corresponding to a population density of ~12 egg bands per 20 cm DBH tree (or ~20 cocoons per 3 min of collection time, or ~10 male moths per pheromone trap), and which implies a radial growth reduction on the order of 40%. We found that not all moth population peaks occur above the threshold level where defoliation is aerially detectable. Asynchronous pulses of defoliation—which are difficult to detect—produce asynchronous signatures of outbreak in tree-ring data. When these pulses occur in close conjunction with regular cycling, it can lead to outbreaks of prolonged duration that result in anomalously high tree mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We used LiDAR metrics and satellite imagery to examine regeneration on forested sites disturbed via harvest or natural means over a 44-year period. We tested the effectiveness of older low-density LiDAR elevation data in producing information related to existing levels of above ground biomass (AGB). To accomplish this, we paired the elevation data with a time series of wetness and greenness indices derived from Landsat satellite imagery to model changes in AGB for sites experiencing different agents of change. Current AGB was determined from high-density LiDAR acquired in northern Minnesota, USA. We then compared high-density LiDAR-based AGB and estimates modeled using Landsat and low-density LiDAR indices for 10,068 sites. Clear differences were found in standing AGB and accumulation rates between sites disturbed by different agents of change. Biomass accumulation following disturbance appears to decrease rapidly following an initial spike as stands 1asZX respond to newly opened growing space. Harvested sites experienced a roughly six-fold increase in the rate of biomass accumulation compared to sites subjected to stand replacing fire or insect and disease, and a 20% increase in productivity when compared to sites subjected to wind mediated canopy loss. In 2018, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted the Sustainable Timber Harvest Analysis that resulted in the 10-year Stand Exam List (SEL). The SEL includes stands that will be assessed for potential management action from 2021 to 2030, but the location, number, and impact of stands actually harvested remains unknown. This study sought to use modeling to assess potential habitat changes from the SEL for five threatened, endangered, or special concern wildlife species. Three simulation scenarios captured the potential range of harvest from the SEL, and the Wildlife Habitat Indicator for Native Genera and Species model assessed associated habitat changes. The most realistic simulation scenario resulted in statistically insignificant habitat changes of less than ±6%, while two scenarios providing the upper and lower extremes of harvest resulted in statistically significant changes for one species each. Scenarios that resulted in less harvest and more mature forests benefited the five species, reflecting their habitat preferences. The tempering of habitat change values in the most realistic simulation scenario provides evidence for forest management tradeoffs between different wildlife species habitat requirements, as well as other forest resource management objectives.
