In this study, a novel antimicrobial formula that incorporates Listeria bacteriophage P100 and silver nanoparticles into an alginate matrix was successfully developed. Paper coated with the antimicrobial formula inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The effects of alginate concentration on the formation of silver nanoparticles, silver concentration on the infectivity of phages, and of low alginate concentrations on the sustained release of silver and phages were explored. The highest antimicrobial activity of the alginate-silver coating was achieved with an alginate concentration of 1%. Adding phage P100 (10 9 PFU/mL) into the alginate-silver coating led to a synergic effect that resulted in a 5-log reduction in L. monocytogenes . A bioactive paper was then developed by coating a base paper with the antimicrobial formula at different coating weights, followed by infrared drying. The higher coating weight was a crucial factor for the maintenance of phage infectivity throughout the coating and drying processes. Phages incorporated into the alginate matrix remained functional even after high-temperature infrared drying. Taken together, an optimized coating matrix is critical in improving the antimicrobial performance of bioactive paper as well as maintaining phage infectivity during the paper manufacturing process.

Herein is presented a novel and efficient portable paper-based sensing platform using paper-incorporated histidine stabilized gold nanoclusters (His-AuNCs), for the sensitive and selective detection of Fe ions from low-volume real water samples based on photoluminescence (PL) quenching. Highly photoluminescent colloidal His-AuNCs are obtained via a novel microwave-assisted method. The His-AuNCs-based sensor reveals a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.2 μM and a good selectivity towards Fe ions, in solution. Further, the fabricated portable sensing device based on paper impregnated with His-AuNCs proves to be suitable for the easy detection of hazardous Fe levels from real water samples, under UV light exposure, through evaluating the level of PL quenching on paper. Photographic images are thereafter captured with a smartphone camera and the average blue intensity ratio (I/I 0 ) of the His-AuNCs-paper spots is plotted against [Fe 2+ ] revealing a LOD of 3.2 μM. Moreover, selectivity and competitivity assays performed on paper-based sensor prove that the proposed platform presents high selectivity and accuracy for the detection of Fe ions from water samples. To validate the platform, sensing assays are performed on real water samples from local sources, spiked with 35 μM Fe ions (i.e., Fe 2+ ). The obtained recoveries prove the high sensitivity and accuracy of the proposed His-AuNCs-paper-based sensor pointing towards its applicability as an easy-to-use, fast, quantitative and qualitative sensor suitable for on-site detection of toxic levels of Fe ions in low-volume real water samples.

The detection of hydrogen peroxide and the control of its concentration are important tasks in the biological and chemical sciences. In this paper, we developed a simple and quantitative method for the non-enzymatic detection of H 2 O 2 based on the selective etching of Au@Ag nanorods with embedded Raman active molecules. The transfer of electrons between silver atoms and hydrogen peroxide enhances the oxidation reaction, and the Ag shell around the Au nanorod gradually dissolves. This leads to a change in the color of the nanoparticle colloid, a shift in LSPR, and a decrease in the SERS response from molecules embedded between the Au core and Ag shell. In our study, we compared the sensitivity of these readouts for nanoparticles with different Ag shell morphology. We found that triangle core-shell nanoparticles exhibited the highest sensitivity, with a detection limit of 10 -4 M, and the SERS detection range of 1 × 10 -4 to 2 × 10 -2 M. In addition, a colorimetric strategy was applied to fabricate a simple indicator paper sensor for fast detection of hydrogen peroxide in liquids. In this case, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was qualitatively determined by the change in the color of the nanoparticles deposited on the nitrocellulose membrane.

This work addresses a method that combines immunomagnetic separation (IMS) and paper-based nucleic acid immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive detection of Mycolicibacterium fortuitum (basonym Mycobacterium fortuitum) In particular, the preconcentration of the bacteria was achieved by using magnetic particles modified with an antibody specific towards mycobacteria. Following the IMS, the bacteria were lysed, and the genome was amplified by double-tagging PCR, using a set of primers specific for the 16S rRNA gene for Mycobacterium . During the amplification, the amplicons were labeled with biotin and digoxigenin tags. Moreover, a comparative study of paper-based immunochromatographic platforms, relying on vertical and lateral flow and on the use of streptavidin gold nanoparticles as a signal generating system, was also performed. The visual readout was achieved when the gold-modified amplicons were captured by the anti-DIG antibody in the test line. The analytical performance of both methods, nucleic acid vertical flow (NAVF) and nucleic acid lateral flow (NALF), is also discussed. Although NALF showed lower limit of detections (LODs), both NALF and NAVF combined with IMS were able to detect the required LOD in hemodialysis water, becoming two promising and useful techniques for the rapid screening of water supplies in hemodialysis centers, to prevent the exposure of immunosuppressed patients to contaminated sources.

Thermal stress and moisture absorption can cause a synergetic negative impact on kraft paper. Among various approaches for improving the dielectric properties of kraft paper, nanotechnology has had promising results. However, the hydrophilicity of most metal oxide nanoparticles renders nanomodified kraft paper more vulnerable to thermal stress and moisture, thereby inducing degradation. In nanomodified kraft paper research, the use of TiO2 nanoparticles has yielded the most promising results. The major shortfall, however, is the hydrophilicity of TiO2. This work investigated surface modifications of rutile-TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Rutile-TiO2 NPs is a nontoxic metal oxide that can withstand high temperature and is stable in chemical reactions. Two cases of surfactants were used—alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The intention was to increase heat resistance and reduce the surface free energy of the rutile-TiO2 NPs. The impacts of the surface modifiers on the rutile-TiO2 NPs were characterised using FT-IR, muffle furnace, analytical weight balance, and TGA. It was discovered that new functional groups were formed on the modified NPs examined through FT-IR spectra. This indicates new chemical bonds, introduced through the surface modification. The unmodified rutile-TiO2 NPs absorbed moisture, increasing their mass by 3.88%, compared with the modified nanoparticles, which released moisture instead. TGA analysis revealed that AKD- and ASA-modified rutile-TiO2 needed higher temperatures than the unmodified rutile-TiO2 to markedly decompose. AKD, however, gave better performance than ASA in that regard. As an example, those modified with 5% AKD sustained a 45% higher temperature than the pure TiO2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, in both cases of the surfactants, the higher the percent of surfactant content was, the more thermally stable the nanoparticles became. This work demonstrates the possibility of fabricating rutile-TiO2 NPs to give improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability for possible dielectric applications such as in kraft paper for power transformer insulation. Engineering of interior hotspots provides a paradigm shift from traditional surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), in which the detection sensitivity depends on the positioning of adsorbed molecules. In the present work, we developed an Ag-Au bimetallic nanocomposite (SGBMNC) SERS platform with interior hotspots through facile chemical syntheses. Ag nanoparticles replaced by Au via the galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) provided hotspot regions inside the SGBMNC that remarkably enhanced the plasmonic activity compared to the conventional SERS platforms without the internal hotspots. The diffusion of analytes into the proposed interior hotspots during the GRR process enabled sensitive detections within 10 s. The SERS behaviors of the SGBMNC platform were investigated using methylene blue (MB) as a Raman probe dye. A quantitative study revealed excellent detection performance, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 42 pM for MB dye and a highly linear correlation between peak intensity and concentration ( R 2 ≥ 0.91). The SGBMNC platform also enabled the detection of toxic benzyl butyl phthalate with a sufficient LOD of 0.09 ppb (i.e., 280 pM). The use of SERS for real-world bioanalytical applications represents a concrete opportunity, which, however, is being largely delayed by the inadequacy of existing substrates used to collect SERS spectra. In particular, the main bottleneck is their poor usability, as in the case of unsupported noble metal colloidal nanoparticles or because of the need for complex or highly specialized fabrication procedures, especially in view of a large-scale commercial diffusion. In this work, we introduce a graphene paper-supported plasmonic substrate for biodetection as obtained by a simple and rapid aerosol deposition patterning of silver nanowires. This substrate is compatible with the analysis of small (2 μL) analyte drops, providing stable SERS signals at sub-millimolar concentration and a detection limit down to the nanogram level in the case of hemoglobin. The presence of a graphene underlayer assures an even surface distribution of SERS hotspots with improved stability of the SERS signal, the collection of well-resolved and intense SERS spectra, and an ultra-flat and photostable SERS background in comparison with other popular disposable supports. In this paper, a novel aptamer-modified nitrogen-doped graphene microelectrode (Apt-Au-N-RGOF) was fabricated and used to specifically identify and detect dopamine (DA). During the synthetic process, gold nanoparticles were loaded onto the active sites of nitrogen-doped graphene fibers. Then, aptamers were modified on the microelectrode depending on Au-S bonds to prepare Apt-Au-N-RGOF. The prepared microelectrode can specifically identify DA, avoiding interference with other molecules and improving its selectivity. Compared with the N-RGOF microelectrode, the Apt-Au-N-RGOF microelectrode exhibited higher sensitivity, a lower detection limit (0.5 μM), and a wider linear range (1~100 μM) and could be applied in electrochemical analysis fields.

Given the widespread prevalence of viruses, there is an escalating demand for antimicrobial composites. Although the composite of dialdehyde cellulose and silver nanoparticles (DAC@Ag1) exhibits excellent antibacterial properties, its weak mechanical characteristics hinder its practical applicability. To address this limitation, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were initially ammoniated to yield N-CNF, which was subsequently incorporated into DAC@Ag1 as an enhancer, forming DAC@Ag1/N-CNF. We systematically investigated the optimal amount of N-CNF and characterized the DAC@Ag1/N-CNF using FT-IR, XPS, and XRD analyses to evaluate its additional properties. Notably, the optimal mass ratio of N-CNF to DAC@Ag1 was found to be 5:5, resulting in a substantial enhancement in mechanical properties, with a 139.8% increase in tensile elongation and a 33.1% increase in strength, reaching 10% and 125.24 MPa, respectively, compared to DAC@Ag1 alone. Furthermore, the inhibition zones against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were significantly expanded to 7.9 mm and 15.9 mm, respectively, surpassing those of DAC@Ag1 alone by 154.8% and 467.9%, indicating remarkable improvements in antimicrobial efficacy. Mechanism analysis highlighted synergistic effects from chemical covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding in the DAC@Ag1/N-CNF, enhancing the mechanical and antimicrobial properties significantly. The addition of N-CNF markedly augmented the properties of the composite film, thereby facilitating its broader application in the antimicrobial field.

Revealing the interaction mechanisms between anticancer drugs and target DNA molecules at the single-molecule level is a hot research topic in the interdisciplinary fields of biophysical chemistry and pharmaceutical engineering. When fluorescence imaging technology is employed to carry out this kind of research, a knotty problem due to fluorescent dye molecules and drug molecules acting on a DNA molecule simultaneously is encountered. In this paper, based on self-made novel solid active substrates NpAA/(ZnO-ZnCl 2 )/AuNPs, we use a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy method, inverted fluorescence microscope technology, and a molecular docking method to investigate the action of the fluorescent dye YOYO-1 and the drug DOX on calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) molecules and the influencing effects and competitive relationships of YOYO-1 on the binding properties of the ctDNA-DOX complex. The interaction sites and modes of action between the YOYO-1 and the ctDNA-DOX complex are systematically examined, and the DOX with the ctDNA-YOYO-1 are compared, and the impact of YOYO-1 on the stability of the ctDNA-DOX complex and the competitive mechanism between DOX and YOYO-1 acting with DNA molecules are elucidated. This study has helpful experimental guidance and a theoretical foundation to expound the mechanism of interaction between drugs and biomolecules at the single-molecule level.

Marine microorganisms have been demonstrated to be an important source for bioactive molecules. In this paper we report the synthesis of Ni nanoparticles (NiSNPs) used as reducing and capping agents for five bacterial strains isolated from an Antarctic marine consortium: Marinomonas sp. ef1, Rhodococcus sp. ef1, Pseudomonas sp. ef1, Brevundimonas sp. ef1, and Bacillus sp. ef1. The NiSNPs were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. The maximum absorbances in the UV-Vis spectra were in the range of 374 nm to 422 nm, corresponding to the Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Nickel. DLS revealed NiSNPs with sizes between 40 and 45 nm. All NiSNPs were polycrystalline with a face-centered cubic lattice, as revealed by XRD analyses. The NiSNPs zeta potential values were highly negative. TEM analysis showed that the NiSNPs were either spherical or rod shaped, well segregated, and with a size between 20 and 50 nm. The FTIR spectra revealed peaks of amino acid and protein binding to the NiSNPs. Finally, all the NiSNPs possess significant antimicrobial activity, which may play an important role in the management of infectious diseases affecting human health.

Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death and disability. While there are many therapeutic alternatives available for the management of CVDs, the majority of classic therapeutic strategies were found to be ineffective at stopping or significantly/additionally slowing the progression of these diseases, or they had unfavorable side effects. Numerous metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been created to overcome these limitations, demonstrating encouraging possibilities in the treatment of CVDs due to advancements in nanotechnology. Metallic nanomaterials, including gold, silver, and iron, come in various shapes, sizes, and geometries. Metallic NPs are generally smaller and have more specialized physical, chemical, and biological properties. Metal-based NPs may come in various forms, such as nanoshells, nanorods, and nanospheres, and they have been studied the most. Massive potential applications for these metal nanomaterial structures include supporting molecular imaging, serving as drug delivery systems, enhancing radiation-based anticancer therapy, supplying photothermal transforming effects for thermal therapy, and being compounds with bactericidal, fungicidal, and antiviral qualities that may be helpful for cardiovascular diseases. In this context, the present paper aims to review the applications of relevant metal and metal oxide nanoparticles in CVDs, creating an up-to-date framework that aids researchers in developing more efficient treatment strategies.

Metal, as a high-performance electrode catalyst, is a research hotspot in the construction of a high-performance microbial fuel cell (MFC). However, metal catalyst nanoparticles and their dispersed carriers are prone to aggregation, producing catalytic electrodes with inferior qualities. In this study, Pd is uniformly dispersed on the graphene framework supported by carbon black to form nanocomposite catalysts (Pd/GO-C catalysts). The effect of the palladium loading amount in the catalyst on the catalytic performance of the air cathode was further studied. The optimized metal loading afforded a reduced resistance and improved accessibility of Pd particles for the ORR. The maximum current output of the 0.250 Pd (mg/cm2) MFC was 1645 mA/m2, which is 4.2-fold higher than that of the carbon paper cathode. Overall, our findings provide a novel protocol for the preparation of high-efficient ORR catalyst for MFCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The search for improved transducers to fabricate better-performing (bio)sensors is a challenging but rewarding endeavor aiming to better diagnose and treat diseases. In this paper, we report on the decoration of a dense vertical array of ultrathin silicon nanowires (Si NWs), produced by metal-assisted chemical etching, with 20 nm gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. To optimize the production of a uniform 3D SERS active platform, we tested different Si NW surface functionalizations with various alkoxysilanes before Au decoration. Scanning electron microscopy investigations confirm that Au NPs decorate both bare and (3-glycidiloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)-modified Si NWs with a high surface coverage uniformity. The SERS response of the decorated NWs was probed using a model dye system (methylene blue; MB) at 633 and 785 nm excitation wavelengths. The GPTMS-modified NWs present the highest enhancements of 2.9 and 2.6 for the 450 cm -1 and 1625 cm -1 peaks under 785 nm excitation and of 10.8 and 5.3 for the 450 cm -1 and 1625 cm -1 peaks under 633 nm excitation. These results demonstrate the perspective role of Si NWs decorated with Au NPs as a low-cost 3D SERS platform.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, capable of wirelessly processing large amounts of information, is gaining attention with the advancement of IoT technology. RFID systems can be utilized as Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology by introducing sensing materials responsive to external environmental stimuli. To achieve effective information communication and sensing capabilities, various types of nanomaterials are being used as various components of RFID sensors. This paper provides an overview of the RFID sensor system and the nanomaterials used in their composition. Polymers that can achieve flexibility are attracting more attention as user-friendly substrates as demand for them increases in the wearable market. Additionally, advancements in inkjet printing technology, allowing cost-effective and simple production of components, introduce inks and manufacturing methods utilizing various nanomaterials such as metal nanoparticles, carbon materials, and composites. Furthermore, nanomaterials utilized as sensing materials enable the detection of various external environments with high sensitivity and a wide detection range. Consequently, RFID sensor systems that achieve wireless detection in a variety of environments are actively utilized in many applications. By analyzing the current research progress and problems faced in RFID sensor technology, this paper suggests future research directions for its development as a next-generation wireless sensor system. This paper explores the photochemical synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles, specifically gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles, using a one-component photoinitiator system. The synthesis process involves visible light irradiation at a wavelength of 419 nm and an intensity of 250 mW/cm 2 . The radical-generating capabilities of the photoinitiators were evaluated using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The main objective of this study was to investigate how the concentration of metal salts influences the size and distribution of the nanoparticles. Proposed mechanisms for the photochemical formation of nanoparticles through photoinitiated radicals were validated using cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that the concentration of AgNO 3 significantly impacted the size of silver nanoparticles, with diameters ranging from 1 to 5 nm at 1 wt% and 3 wt% concentrations, while increasing the concentration to 5 wt% led to an increase in the diameter of silver nanoparticles to 16 nm. When HAuCl 4 was used instead of AgNO 3 , it was found that the average diameters of gold nanoparticles synthesized using both photoinitiators at different concentrations ranged between 1 and 4 nm. The findings suggest that variations in HAuCl 4 concentration have minimal impact on the size of gold nanoparticles. The photoproduction of AuNPs was shown to be thermodynamically favorable, with the reduction of HAuCl 4 to Au 0 having ∆G values of approximately -3.51 and -2.96 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively. Furthermore, the photoreduction of Ag +1 to Ag 0 was demonstrated to be thermodynamically feasible, with ∆G values of approximately -3.459 and -2.91 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively, confirming the effectiveness of the new photoinitiators on the production of nanoparticles. The synthesis of nanoparticles was monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and their sizes were determined through particle size analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images.

Bendamustine (BENDA) is a bifunctional alkylating agent with alkylating and purinergic antitumor activity, which exerts its anticancer effects by direct binding to DNA, but the detailed mechanism of BENDA-DNA interaction is poorly understood. In this paper, the interaction properties of the anticancer drug BENDA with calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) were systematically investigated based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique mainly using a novel homemade AuNPs/ZnCl 2 /NpAA (NpAA: nano porous anodic alumina) solid-state substrate and combined with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and molecular docking simulation to reveal the mechanism of their interactions. We experimentally compared and studied the SERS spectra of ctDNA, BENDA, and BENDA-ctDNA complexes with different molar concentrations (1:1, 2:1, 3:1), and summarized their important characteristic peak positions, their peak position differences, and hyperchromic/hypochromic effects. The results showed that the binding modes include covalent binding and hydrogen bonding, and the binding site of BENDA to DNA molecules is mainly the N7 atom of G base. The results of this study help to understand and elucidate the mechanism of BENDA at the single-molecule level, and provide guidance for the further development of effective new drugs with low toxicity and side effects.

Cervical cancer is an important topic in the study of global health issues, ranking fourth among women's cancer cases in the world. It is one of the nine major cancers that China is focusing on preventing and treating, and it is the only cancer that can be prevented through vaccination. Systematic and effective screening for human papilloma (HPV) infection, which is closely linked to the development of cervical cancer, can reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality. In this paper, an electrochemical sensor was designed to detect HPV 16 using dual-signal amplification. An APTES-modified glassy carbon electrode was used for improved stability. Gold nanoparticles and a chain amplification reaction were combined for signal amplification. The limit of detection (LOD) of this electrochemical sensor was 1.731 × 10 -16 mol/L, and the linear response of the target detector range was from 1.0 × 10 -13 mol/L to 1.0 × 10 -5 mol/L (R 2 = 0.99232). The test of serum sample recovery showed that it has good anti-interference, and the performance of all aspects was improved to different degrees compared with the previous research from the team. The designed sensor is centered around the principles of low cost, high sensitivity and stability, which provides new ideas for the future development of cervical cancer prevention and electrochemical biosensors.

Phenanthrene (PHE), as a structurally simple, tricyclic, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), is widely present in marine environments and organisms, with serious ecological and health impacts. It is crucial to study fast and simple high-sensitivity detection methods for phenanthrene in seawater for the environment and the human body. In this paper, a immunosensor was prepared by using a multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)-chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) nanocomposite membrane loaded with phenanthrene antibody. The principle was based on the antibody-antigen reaction in the immune reaction, using the strong electron transfer ability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, coupled with chitosan oligosaccharides with an excellent film formation and biocompatibility, to amplify the detection signal. The content of the phenanthrene in seawater was studied via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using a potassium ferricyanide system as a redox probe. The antibody concentration, pH value, and probe concentration were optimized. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the response peak current of the phenanthrene was inversely proportional to the concentration of phenanthrene, in the range from 0.5 ng·mL -1 to 80 ng·mL -1 , and the detection limit was 0.30 ng·mL -1 . The immune sensor was successfully applied to the detection of phenanthrene in marine water, with a recovery rate of 96.1~101.5%, and provided a stable, sensitive, and accurate method for the real-time monitoring of marine environments.

Cancer, which presents with high incidence and mortality rates, has become a significant health threat worldwide. However, there is currently no effective solution for rapid screening and high-quality treatment of early-stage cancer patients. Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs), as a new type of compound with stable properties, convenient synthesis, high efficiency, and few adverse reactions, have become highly competitive tools for early cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, challenges such as the difference between the microenvironment of detected markers and the real-life body fluids remain in achieving widespread clinical application of MNPs. This review provides a comprehensive review of the research progress made in the field of in vitro cancer diagnosis using metal-based nanoparticles. By delving into the characteristics and advantages of these materials, this paper aims to inspire and guide researchers towards fully exploiting the potential of metal-based nanoparticles in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Ag nanomaterials are promising candidates for the discovery of next-generation antibiotics with a high antibacterial effect against multi-drug resistant strains. This paper reports a simple synthesis of novel water-soluble glutathione-capped silver nanoclusters (GSH-Ag NCs) with an enhanced antibacterial activity. According to thin layer chromatography (TLC), the synthesized GSH-Ag NCs are an individual fraction of the same composition without any impurities. According to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses, the silver core of the GSH-Ag NCs contains approximately 35 silver atoms, and the molecular weight of these nanoclusters is about 11 kDa. The fabricated silver nanoclusters have a reddish fluorescence (λex/λem = 509/645 nm), with a large Stokes shift (>130 nm), and ultra-small size (less than 2 nm) according to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. The antibacterial activity and minimal inhibitory concentrations of the silver nanoclusters towards Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus cereus and Enterobacter cloacae were evaluated using the agar well-diffusion method and resazurin metabolism assay. The antibacterial activity of chelated silver in the nanoclusters was found to be significantly higher compared to the activity of free silver ions. To explain the possible mechanisms underlying the antibacterial actions of the GSH-Ag nanoclusters, molecular docking was performed, and prospective bacterial targets were identified using AutoDock.

For the past years, fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology has received increased attention in the applications of industrial manufacturing fields, particularly for rapid prototyping, small batch production and highly customized products, owing to the merits of low-cost, user-friendliness and high design freedom. To further expand the application potential and promote the performance of the as-manufactured products, many efforts have been spent on the development of suitable materials for FDM applications. In recent years, the involvement of nanomaterials in the FDM-based polymer matrix, which has been demonstrated with great opportunities to enhance the performance and versatility of FDM printed objects, has attracted more and more research interest and the trend is expected to be more pronounced in the next few years. This paper attempts to provide a timely review regarding the current research advances in the use of nanomaterials to reinforce polymer filaments for the FDM technique. Polymer composite filaments based on nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, nanoclay, carbon fibers, graphene, metal nanoparticles and oxides are discussed in detail regarding their properties and applications. We also summarized the current research challenges and outlooked the future research trends in this field. This paper aims at providing a useful reference and guidance for skilled researchers and also beginners in related fields. Hopefully, more research advances can be stimulated in the coming years. The demand for antimicrobial materials is gradually increasing due to the threat of infections and diseases caused by microorganisms. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used because of their broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, but their synthesis methods are often environmentally harmful and AgNPs difficult to isolate, which limits their application in several fields. In this study, an aqueous solution of dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) was prepared and used as a reducing agent to synthesize AgNPs in an efficient and environmentally friendly process. The synthesized AgNPs can be easily separated from the reducing agent to expand their applications. In addition, the AgNPs were immobilized in situ on dialdehyde cellulose to form antibacterial composite films. The results showed that the prepared silver nanoparticles were mainly spherical and uniformly dispersed, with an average size of about 25 nm under optimal conditions. Moreover, the dialdehyde cellulose-nanosilver (DAC@Ag) composite films had excellent mechanical properties, positive transparency, ultraviolet-blocking properties, and effective antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Notably, the composite films exhibited excellent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties, with WVT and ORT of 136.41 g/m 2 ·24 h (30 °C, 75% RH) and <0.02 cm 3 /m 2 ·24 h·0.1 MPa (30 °C, 75% RH), respectively, better than commercial PE films. Hence, this study not only provides an environmentally friendly method for the preparation of silver nanoparticles, but also offers a simple and novel strategy for the in situ synthesis of silver-loaded antibacterial composite films.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) by forced solvolysis of Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 ·2H 2 O in alcohols with a different number of -OH groups. We study the influence of alcohol type (n-butanol, ethylene glycol and glycerin) on the size, morphology, and properties of the obtained ZnO NPs. The smallest polyhedral ZnO NPs (<30 nm) were obtained in n-butanol, while in ethylene glycol the NPs measured on average 44 nm and were rounded. Polycrystalline particles of 120 nm were obtained in glycerin only after water refluxing. In addition, here, we report the photocatalytic activity, against a dye mixture, of three model pollutants: methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB), a model closer to real situations where water is polluted with many chemicals. All samples exhibited good photocatalytic activity against the dye mixture, with degradation efficiency reaching 99.99%. The sample with smallest nanoparticles maintained a high efficiency >90%, over five catalytic cycles. Antibacterial tests were conducted against Gram-negative strains Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli , and Gram-positive strains Enterococcus faecalis , Bacillus subtilis , Staphylococcus aureus , and Bacillus cereus . The ZnO samples presented strong inhibition of planktonic growth for all tested strains, indicating that they can be used for antibacterial applications, such as water purification.

In this paper, a core-shell based on the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Au nanoparticle amplification technique for a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is proposed. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @AuNPs were used not only to amplify SPR signals, but also to rapidly separate and enrich T-2 toxin via an external magnetic field. We detected T-2 toxin using the direct competition method in order to evaluate the amplification effect of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @AuNPs. A T-2 toxin-protein conjugate (T2-OVA) immobilized on the surface of 3-mercaptopropionic acid-modified sensing film competed with T-2 toxin to combine with the T-2 toxin antibody-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @AuNPs conjugates (mAb-Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @AuNPs) as signal amplification elements. With the decrease in T-2 toxin concentration, the SPR signal gradually increased. In other words, the SPR response was inversely proportional to T-2 toxin. The results showed that there was a good linear relationship in the range of 1 ng/mL~100 ng/mL, and the limit of detection was 0.57 ng/mL. This work also provides a new possibility to improve the sensitivity of SPR biosensors in the detection of small molecules and in disease diagnosis.

In recent years, research on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has attracted considerable interest among scientists because of, among other things, their alternative application to well-known medical agents with antibacterial properties. The size of the silver nanoparticles ranges from 1 to 100 nm. In this paper, we review the progress of research on AgNPs with respect to the synthesis, applications, and toxicological safety of AgNPs, and the issue of in vivo and in vitro research on silver nanoparticles. AgNPs' synthesis methods include physical, chemical, and biological routes, as well as "green synthesis". The content of this article covers issues related to the disadvantages of physical and chemical methods, which are expensive and can also have toxicity. This review pays special attention to AgNP biosafety concerns, such as potential toxicity to cells, tissues, and organs.

Excessive protein excretion in human urine is an early and sensitive marker of diabetic nephropathy and primary and secondary renal disease. Kidney problems, particularly chronic kidney disease, remain among the few growing causes of mortality in the world. Therefore, it is important to develop an efficient, expressive, and low-cost method for protein determination. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) methods are potential candidates to achieve these criteria. In this paper, a SERS method was developed to distinguish patients with proteinuria from the healthy group. Commercial gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with diameters of 60 nm and 100 nm, and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a diameter of 100 nm were tested on the surface of four different substrates including silver and gold films, silicon, and aluminum tape. SERS spectra were acquired from 111 unique human urine samples prepared and measured for each of the seven different nanoparticle plus substrate combinations. Data analysis by the PCA-LDA algorithm and the ROC curves gave results for the diagnostic figures of merits. The best sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC were 0.91, 0.84, 0.88, and 0.94 for the set with 100 nm Au NPs on the silver substrate, respectively. Among the three metal substrates, the substrate with AuNPs and Al tape performed slightly worse than the other three substrates, and 100 nm gold nanoparticles on average produced better results than 60 nm gold nanoparticles. The 60 nm diameter AuNPs and silicon, which is about one order of magnitude more cost-effective than AuNPs and gold film, showed a relative performance close to the performance of 60 nm AuNPs and Au film (average AUC 0.88 (Si) vs. 0.89 (Au)). This is likely the first reported application of unmodified silicon in SERS substrates applied for direct detection of proteins in any biofluid, particularly in urine. These results position silicon and AuNPs@Si in particular as a perspective SERS substrate for direct urine analysis, including clinical diagnostics of proteinuria.

In this paper, the luminescent complex Eu(3-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) 3 was integrated with Fe 3 O 4 and gold (Au) nanoparticles to form a multifunctional nanocomposite, Fe 3 O 4 /Au/Eu(TTA) 3 (FOASET NC), for dual magnetic-photothermal therapy and biomedical imaging. Upon functionalization with amine-NH 2 , the FOASET NC exhibits a small size of 60-70 nm and strong, sharp emission at λ max = 614 nm, enhanced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au nanoparticles that provided an effective label for HT29 colorectal cancer cells by fluorescence microscopy imaging. In addition, a hyperthermia temperature (42-46 °C) was completely achieved by using these FOASET NCs in an aqueous solution with three heating modes for (i) Magnetic therapy (MT), (ii) Photothermal therapy (PT), and (iii) Dual magnetic-photothermal therapy (MPT). The heating efficiency was improved in the dual magnetic-photothermal heating mode.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an in-depth review of plasmonic metal nanoparticles made from rhodium, platinum, gold, or silver. We describe fundamental concepts, synthesis methods, and optical sensing applications of these nanoparticles. Plasmonic metal nanoparticles have received a lot of interest due to various applications, such as optical sensors, single-molecule detection, single-cell detection, pathogen detection, environmental contaminant monitoring, cancer diagnostics, biomedicine, and food and health safety monitoring. They provide a promising platform for highly sensitive detection of various analytes. Due to strongly localized optical fields in the hot-spot region near metal nanoparticles, they have the potential for plasmon-enhanced optical sensing applications, including metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and biomedical imaging. We explain the plasmonic enhancement through electromagnetic theory and confirm it with finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations. Moreover, we examine how the localized surface plasmon resonance effects of gold and silver nanoparticles have been utilized for the detection and biosensing of various analytes. Specifically, we discuss the syntheses and applications of rhodium and platinum nanoparticles for the UV plasmonics such as UV-MEF and UV-SERS. Finally, we provide an overview of chemical, physical, and green methods for synthesizing these nanoparticles. We hope that this paper will promote further interest in the optical sensing applications of plasmonic metal nanoparticles in the UV and visible ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel dihydroquinoline derivatives (DHP and DHP-OH) were synthesized in one pot via a tandem trimerization-cyclization of methylpropiolate. DHP and DHP-OH possess strong blue fluorescence with high quantum efficiencies over 0.70 in aqueous media. DHP-OH displays a remarkable fluorescence quenching selectively to the presence of Au3+ through the oxidation of dihydropyridine to pyridinium ion as confirmed by NMR and HRMS. DHP-OH was used to demonstrate the quantitative analysis of Au3+ in water samples with the limit of detection of 33 ppb and excellent recovery (>95%). This fluorescent probe was also applied for the determination of Au3+ residue in the gold nanoparticle solution and a paper-based sensing strip for the on-site detection of Au3+.

This article is devoted to a novel class of antimicrobial agents: nanocomposites composed of spherical silica and silver ions located at the silica's surface with the assumed distribution. Such materials are in high demand due to the increasing threat from bacterial strains that are becoming resistant to currently known antibiotics. In particular, we focus on materials that make it possible to limit the growth of bacterial colonies on a variety of tactile surfaces. In this paper, we present a method for preparing a silica-based nanocomposite containing silver ions and the analysis of their antimicrobial properties. Our research revealed that the presence of tested nanocomposite induces very high oxidative stress in the bacteria cell, damaging and modifying bacterial DNA, creating oxidized guanines, cytosines, or adenines, which causes its very rapid destruction, leading to cell death.

In this paper, we report a highly sensitive voltammetric sensor for the determination of the anti-cancer antibiotic bleomycin (BLM) based on a screen-printed carbon sensor that is electrochemically pretreated and decorated with lead nanoparticles in the sample solution (pSPCE/PbNPs). These sensor surface manipulations contribute to significant amplification of the analytical signal and improvement of its shape and repeatability. The effect of the electrochemical behavior of BLM on the pSPCE/PbNPs was examined by electrochemical strategies. CV, EIS, and XPS were used to compare the sensor surface modifications. The effects of the type and pH of the supporting electrolyte and the procedure parameters were optimized. The features of the proposed procedure include: (a) very low limits of detection and quantification (2.8 × 10 -11 and 9.3 × 10 -11 M, respectively), (b) linear ranges (1.0 × 10 -10 -2.0 × 10 -9 M and 2.0 × 10 -9 -2.0 × 10 -8 M, and (c) a high sensitivity of 0.32 µA/nM. The electrochemical sensor was successfully applied for the determination of BLM in wastewater and reference material of human urine samples.

Lead contamination in aquatic products is one of the main hazard factors. The aptasensor is a promising detection method for lead ion (Pb(II)) because of its selectivity, but it is easily affected by pH. The combination of ion-imprinted polymers(IIP) with aptamers may improve their stability in different pH conditions. This paper developed a novel electrochemical biosensor for Pb(II) detection by using aptamer-imprinted polymer as a recognition element. The glassy carbon electrode was modified with gold nanoparticles and aptamers. After the aptamer was induced by Pb(II) to form a G-quadruplex conformation, a chitosan-graphene oxide was electrodeposited and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to form an imprint layer, improving the stability of the biosensor. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the current signal change (∆I) showed a linear correlation of the content of Pb(II) in the range of 0.1-2.0 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.0796 μg/mL (S/N = 3). The biosensor also exhibited high selectivity for the determination of Pb(II) in the presence of other interfering metal ion. At the same time, the stability of the imprinted layer made the sensor applicable to the detection environment with a pH of 6.4-8.0. Moreover, the sensor was successfully applied to the detection of Pb(II) in mantis shrimp.

The aim of this paper is to provide a simple and efficient photoassisted approach to synthesize silver nanoparticles, and to elucidate the role of the key factors (synthesis parameters, such as the concentration of TSC, irradiation time, and UV intensity) that play a major role in the photochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles using TSC, both as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Concomitantly, we aim to provide an easy way to evaluate the particle size based on Mie theory. One of the key advantages of this method is that the synthesis can be "activated" whenever or wherever silver nanoparticles are needed, by premixing the reactants and irradiating the final solution with UV radiation. UV irradiance was determined by using Keitz's theory. This argument has been verified by premixing the reagents and deposited them in an enclosed space (away from sunlight) at 25 °C, then checking them for three days. Nothing happened, unless the sample was directly irradiated by UV light. Further, obtained materials were monitored for 390 days and characterized using scanning electron microscopy, UV-VIS, and transmission electron microscopy.

Assessment of the composition of meat-containing products is the task in demand due to their frequent deviations from declared recipes. The paper presents the developed test system for immunochromatographic determination of total meat content. The assay is based on the simultaneous use of monoclonal antibodies, which specifically interacts with mammalian skeletal troponin I, and polyclonal antibodies, which specifically detect bird immunoglobulin Y. To integrate the detection of both types of meat by the same test strip, the antibodies are mixed in the analytical zone of the test strip and in complex with a gold nanoparticle label. The chosen ratios of the antibodies for both mixtures provide the same contribution of different types of mammalian and bird raw materials of muscle tissues to the label binding. The test system demonstrates suitability for products containing beef, pork, rabbit, lamb, chicken, and turkey meat. The minimal detectable content of meat in samples is 0.1%. The samples for the testing are diluted 100 times, thus eliminating matrix effects, and providing high reproducibility of the color intensity for extracts of different compositions. The obtained results allow the recommendation of the developed test system for rapid on-site control of meat products.

The improvement of laboratory diagnosis is a critical step for the reduction of syphilis cases around the world. In this paper, we present the development of an impedance-based method for detecting T. pallidum antigens and antibodies as an auxiliary tool for syphilis laboratory diagnosis. We evaluate the voltammetric signal obtained after incubation in carbon or gold nanoparticle-modified carbon electrodes in the presence or absence of Poly-L-Lysine. Our results indicate that the signal obtained from the electrodes was sufficient to distinguish between infected and non-infected samples immediately (T0') or 15 min (T15') after incubation, indicating its potential use as a point-of-care method as a screening strategy.

The present paper describes an alternative approach to the traditionally used covalent immobilization methods that require cost-intensive and complicated chemistry modification of a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) capture probe. The low-cost pencil graphite electrode (PGE) modified with carbon black (CB) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was used as an electrochemical platform and the non-modified ssDNA was immobilized on a self-assembled cysteamine modified AuNPs/CB-PGE through a phosphoramidate bond between the 5'-terminal phosphate group of ssDNA and the primary amine group of cysteamine. The microRNA-21 was used as a target model in the fabrication of this electrochemical DNA biosensor and the hybridization process with the complementary probe was monitored by differential pulse voltammetry using methylene blue (MB) as an electrochemical hybridization indicator. The decreased reduction peak current of MB shows a good linear correlation with the increased concentration of microRNA-21 target sequences because the MB signal is determined by the amount of exposed guanine bases. The linear range of the fabricated DNA biosensor was from 1.0 × 10 -8 to 5.0 × 10 -7 M with a detection limit of 1.0 × 10 -9 M. These results show that the covalent immobilization of a non-modified ssDNA capture probe through a phosphoramidate-bonding strategy could serve as a cost-effective and versatile approach for the fabrication of DNA biosensors related to a wide range of applications that cover the fields of medical diagnostic and environmental monitoring. The fabricated electrochemical DNA biosensor was used to analyze microRNA-21 in a (spiked) human serum sample and it showed satisfactory and encouraging results as an electrochemical DNA biosensor platform.

Acetone is an essential indicator for determining the aging of transformer insulation. Rapid, sensitive, and accurate quantification of acetone in transformer oil is highly significant in assessing the aging of oil-paper insulation systems. In this study, silver nanowires modified with small zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs@Ag NWs) were excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates and efficiently and sensitively detected acetone in transformer oil. Stoichiometric models such as multiple linear regression (MLR) models and partial least square regressions (PLS) were investigated to quantify acetone in transformer oil and compared with commonly used univariate linear regressions (ULR). PLS combined with a preprocessing algorithm provided the best prediction model, with a correlation coefficient of 0.998251 for the calibration set, 0.997678 for the predictive set, a root mean square error in the calibration set (RMSECV = 0.12596 mg/g), and a prediction set (RMSEP = 0.11408 mg/g). For an acetone solution of 0.003 mg/g, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was the lowest among the three quantitative models. For a concentration of 7.29 mg/g, the MAPE was 1.60%. This method achieved limits of quantification and detections of 0.003 mg/g and 1 μg/g, respectively. In general, these results suggested that ZnO NPs@Ag NWs as SERS substrates coupled with PLS simply and accurately quantified trace acetone concentrations in transformer oil.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is on the rise and hinders the fight against bacterial infections, which are expected to cause millions of deaths by 2050. New antibiotics are difficult to find, so alternatives are needed. One could be metal-based drugs, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In general, chemical methods for AgNPs' production are potentially toxic, and the physical ones expensive, while green approaches are not. In this paper, we present the green synthesis of AgNPs using two Pseudomonas alloputida B003 UAM culture broths, sampled from their exponential and stationary growth phases. AgNPs were physicochemically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showing differential characteristics depending on the synthesis method used. Antibacterial activity was tested in three assays, and we compared the growth and biofilm-formation inhibition of six test bacteria: Bacillus subtilis , Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Staphylococcus aureus , and Staphylococcus epidermidis . We also monitored nanoparticles' synergic behavior through the growth inhibition of E. coli and S. aureus by three classical antibiotics: ampicillin, nalidixic acid, and streptomycin. The results indicate that very good AgNP activity was obtained with particularly low MICs for the three tested strains of P. aeruginosa . A good synergistic effect on streptomycin activity was observed for all the nanoparticles. For ampicillin, a synergic effect was detected only against S. aureus . ROS production was found to be related to the AgNPs' antibacterial activity.

Metallic nanoparticles exhibit broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The antiviral activity of nanoparticles results from the multivalent interactions of nanoparticles with viral surface components, which result from the nanometer size of the material and the presence of functional compounds adsorbed on the nanomaterial surface. A critical step in the virus infection process is docking and entry of the virus into the host cell. This stage of the infection can be influenced by functional nanomaterials that exhibit high affinity to the virus surface and hence can disrupt the infection process. The affinity of the virus to the nanomaterial surface can be tuned by the specific surface functionalization of the nanomaterial. The main purpose of this work was to determine the influence of the ligand type present on nanomaterial on the antiviral properties against herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2. We investigated the metallic nanoparticles (gold and silver) with different sizes (5 nm and 30 nm), coated either with polyphenol (tannic acid) or sulfonates (ligands with terminated sulfonate groups). The incidence of microbial infections in orthopedic prosthetic surgeries is a perennial problem that increases morbidity and mortality, representing one of the major complications of such medical interventions. The emergence of novel technologies, especially 3D printing, represents a promising avenue of development for reducing the risk of such eventualities. There are already a host of biomaterials, suitable for 3D printing, that are being tested for antimicrobial properties when they are coated with bioactive compounds, such as antibiotics, or combined with hydrogels with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, such as chitosan and metal nanoparticles, among others. The materials discussed in the context of this paper comprise beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), hydroxyapatite, lithium disilicate glass, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF), poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC), and zirconia. While the recent research results are promising, further development is required to address the increasing antibiotic resistance exhibited by several common pathogens, the potential for fungal infections, and the potential toxicity of some metal nanoparticles. Other solutions, like the incorporation of phytochemicals, should also be explored. Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of certain orthopedic implants and the potential use of AI against bacterial infections might represent viable solutions to these problems. Currently, the alteration of external factors during crude oil extraction easily disrupts the thermodynamic equilibrium of asphaltene, resulting in the continuous flocculation and deposition of asphaltene molecules in crude oil. This accumulation within the pores of reservoir rocks obstructs the pore throat, hindering the efficient extraction of oil and gas, and consequently, affecting the recovery of oil and gas resources. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the principles of asphaltene deposition inhibition and the synthesis of asphaltene inhibitors. In recent years, the development of nanotechnology has garnered significant attention due to its unique surface and volume effects. Nanoparticles possess a large specific surface area, high adsorption capacity, and excellent suspension and catalytic abilities, exhibiting unparalleled advantages compared with traditional organic asphaltene inhibitors, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and salicylic acid. At present, there are three primary types of nanoparticle inhibitors: metal oxide nanoparticles, organic nanoparticles, and inorganic nonmetal nanoparticles. This paper reviews the recent advancements and application challenges of nanoparticle asphaltene deposition inhibition technology based on the mechanism of asphaltene deposition and nano-inhibitors. For photothermal therapy of cancer, it is necessary to find Ag @TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles that can freely tune the resonance wavelength within the near-infrared biological window. In this paper, the finite element method and the size-dependent refractive index of metal nanoparticles were used to theoretically investigate the effects of the core material, core length, core aspect ratio, shell thickness, refractive index of the surrounding medium, and the particle orientation on the light absorption properties of Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid and nanorod. The calculations show that the position and intensity of the light absorption resonance peaks can be freely tuned within the first and second biological windows by changing the above-mentioned parameters. Two laser wavelengths commonly used in photothermal therapy, 808 nm (first biological window) and 1064 nm (second biological window), were selected to optimize the core length and aspect ratio of Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid and nanorod. It was found that the optimized Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid has a stronger light absorption capacity at the laser wavelengths of 808 nm and 1064 nm. This paper presents the impact of the decoration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with metallic nanoparticles to detect sulfur dioxide (SO2). Copper and platinum were employed to produce metal nanoparticles (NPs) for the chemical and physical decoration of rGO to form the nanocomposites (rGO/NPs). We optimized NP loading by varying the concentrations of metal ions and deposition times for chemical and physical decoration, respectively. The chemical decoration presents a random nanoparticle distribution on the rGO surface with a broad particle size distribution (1 to 100 nm with a majority less than 40 nm). In comparison, the physical decoration presents uniformly distributed nanoparticles with particles of a size between 1 and 20 nm, with a majority less than 10 nm. The chemically decorated structures present the best gas responses and show that lower NP loading provides better responses. The nanocomposites present responses owing to a better synergy between NPs and the rGO surface, combined with the catalytic action of the NPs on the rGO. The physical decoration allows higher NP surface coverage than the chemical one but implies a lower remaining rGO naked surface for gaseous molecule interaction. Due to the limitation that natural peroxidase enzymes can only function in relatively mild environments, nanozymes have expanded the application of enzymology in the biological field by dint of their ability to maintain catalytic oxidative activity in relatively harsh environments. At the same time, the development of new and highly efficient composite nanozymes has been a challenge due to the limitations of monometallic particles in applications and the inherently poor enzyme-mimetic activity of composite nanozymes. The inherent enzyme-mimicking activity is due to Au, Ag, and Pt, along with other transition metals. Moreover, the nanomaterials exhibit excellent enzyme-mimicking activity when composited with other materials. Therefore, this paper focuses on composite nanozymes with simulated peroxidase activity that have been prepared using noble metals such as Au, Ag, and Pt and other transition metal nanoparticles in recent years. Their simulated enzymatic activity is utilized for biomedical applications such as glucose detection, cancer cell detection and tumor treatment, and antibacterial applications. The quantification of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) in environmental samples at ultratrace concentrations can be accurately performed by sophisticated and pricey analytical methods. This paper aims to challenge the analytical potential and advantages of cheaper and equally reliable alternatives that couple the well-established extraction procedures with common spectrometric methods. We discuss several combinations of techniques that are suitable for separation/preconcentration and quantification of AuNP in complex and challenging aqueous matrices, such as tap, river, lake, brook, mineral, and sea waters, as well as wastewaters. Cloud point extraction (CPE) has been successfully combined with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), chemiluminescence (CL), and total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). The major advantage of this approach is the ability to quantify AuNP of different sizes and coatings in a sample with a volume in the order of milliliters. Small volumes of sample (5 mL), dispersive solvent (50 µL), and extraction agent (70 µL) were reported also for surfactant-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (SA-DLLME) coupled with electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS). The limits of detection (LOD) achieved using different combinations of methods as well as enrichment factors (EF) varied greatly, being 0.004-200 ng L -1 and 8-250, respectively.
