Electrical power quality is a vital aspect when designing or assessing the operation of all modern power systems and forms an important part of the ongoing energy transition to more efficient and multi-vector systems. However, the ongoing proliferation and changing functionality of power electronic devices, coupled with new grid operating paradigms, such as renewable energy sources integration, microgrids, low-voltage dc distribution networks, and the large-scale integration of electric vehicles, present unique opportunities and challenges for grid operators the world over and require new assessment methods and fresh perspectives on the role of power quality.

118. Demo Paper: Benchmarking Scalability of Cloud-Native Applications with Theodolite

Abstract

Theodolite is a framework for benchmarking the scalability of cloud-native applications. It automates deployment and monitoring of a cloud-native application for different load intensities and provisioned cloud resources and assesses whether specified service level objectives (SLOs) are fulfilled. Provided as a Kubernetes Operator, Theodolite allows defining, sharing, and archiving benchmarks and experiment configurations in declarative files. We demonstrate Theodolite’s benchmarking method and show how researchers and cloud engineers can execute existing scalability benchmarks or define new ones with Theodolite.

119. Partial discharge inception and deterioration of Nomex paper under repetitive square wave voltage

Abstract

Working under PWM voltage with fast voltage rise time and high frequency, medium frequency transformers may suffer from overvoltage and temperature rise in the winding. As a result, partial discharge may be triggered with high probability, threating the insulation reliability. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the insulation capability of medium frequency transformers with respect to partial discharge and deterioration. This paper introduces a test system based on power electronic modules that can generate repetitive pulse voltage. Then, by using this system, partial discharge inception voltage test under different temperatures and endurance lifetime test are conducted on Nomex paper, which is an insulation material usually used in medium frequency transformers. The results show the change trending of the partial discharge inception voltage of Nomex paper with temperature and indicate an accelerated aging of this material with the presence of continuous discharge.

Abstract

Novel designs of paper-based bandstop frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) are presented in this article. The characteristics of the paper-based honeycomb structure are investigated first. One folded dipole resonator with first-order bandstop response is analyzed and further printed on the sidewalls of the honeycomb structure accordingly. A second-order response with two cascade FSSs is proposed with controllable bandwidth by the coupling coefficient of the resonators with the aid of the equivalent circuit model. Two paper-based FSS samples were fabricated and measured to demonstrate the validity of the proposed design strategies. Benefiting from the merits of lightweight and strong mechanical properties, the proposed paper-based FSS is a potential candidate for application in radar systems and aircraft. 121. Effect of Aging Degree on Partial Discharge Degradation of Oil-paper Insulation.

Abstract

This study conducts thermal aging treatment to study the effect of thermal aging on the PD degradation process of the oil-paper insulation. The partial discharge inception voltages, extinction voltages, carbon mark, and microscopic morphology of samples are analyzed. The results show that thermal aging does not reduce the partial discharge inception voltages of oil-paper but can make the spark produced in the oil-paper more difficult to extinguish. At the initial stage, thermal aging has little effect on the development of partial discharge in normal direction of samples, while in later stages, the effect begins to appear; thermal aging reduces the insulation performance between layers of oil impregnated paper and accelerates the carbon trace growth rate in the horizontal direction. In this model, the first layer is most severely bombarded by electrons, and this layer is most obviously affected by the electric field in the normal direction at the contact point between the electrode and the insulating paper. The lower layer is affected by the horizontal and vertical electric fields; therefore, a large area of fiber looseness occurs on the surface of the oil impregnated paper. The degree of deterioration is proportional to the endurance time and aging time, and the damage degree of oil impregnated paper decreases with the increase of the number of layers.
