In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. The efficiency of link adaptation in wireless communications relies greatly on the accuracy of channel knowledge and transmission mode selection. In this paper, a novel deep learning based link adaptation framework is proposed for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with compressed-sensing-assisted index modulation, termed as OFDM-CSIM, communicating over millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. To achieve link adaptation, a novel multi-layer sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm is proposed for accurately and instantaneously providing the required channel state information. Meanwhile, a deep neural networks (DNN)-assisted adaptive modulation algorithm is proposed to choose the best possible transmission mode to maximize the achievable throughput. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-layer SBL algorithm enables more accurate channel estimation than the conventional techniques. The DNN-based adaptive modulator is capable of achieving a higher throughput than the learning-assisted solution based on the $k$ nearest neighbor ($k$ -NN) algorithm, and also the classic average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based solutions. Moreover, analysis shows that both the multi-layer SBL algorithm and the DNN-assisted adaptive modulator achieve better performance than their respective conventional counterparts while at a significantly lower computational complexity cost. In this paper, we aim to efficiently and accurately predict the static channel impulse response (CIR) with only the user’s position information and a set of channel instances obtained within a certain wireless communication environment. Such a problem is by no means trivial since it needs to reconstruct the high-dimensional information (here the CIR everywhere) from the extremely low-dimensional data (here the location coordinates), which often results in overfitting and large prediction error. To this end, we resort to a novel physics-inspired generative approach. Specifically, we first use a forward deep neural network to infer the positions of all possible images of the source reflected by the surrounding scatterers within that environment, and then use the well-known Gaussian Radial Basis Function network (GRBF) to approximate the amplitudes of all possible propagation paths. We further incorporate the most recently developed sinusoidal representation network (SIREN) into the proposed network to implicitly represent the highly dynamic phases of all possible paths, which usually cannot be well predicted by the conventional neural networks with non-periodic activators. The resultant framework of Cosine-Gaussian Radial Basis Function network (C-GRBFnet) is also extended to the MIMO channel case. Key performance measures including prediction accuracy, convergence speed, network scale and robustness to channel estimation error are comprehensively evaluated and compared with existing popular networks, which show that our proposed network is much more efficient in representing, learning and predicting wireless channels in a given communication environment. In this paper, we propose a federated online training framework for deep neural network (DNN)-based channel estimation (CE) in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. The proposed DNN consists of two stages, where Stage-I explores the partial common sparsity structure among the users, while Stage-II estimates the channel state information (CSI) with reduced pilot overhead leveraging the common support information provided by Stage-I. To realize online training, we first propose three axioms for a legitimate online loss function, based on which we develop the federated online training algorithm with convergence analysis. The proposed two-tier DNN is trained online at the base station (BS) based on real-time pilot measurements distributively fed back from the users without the need of true channel labels, and the estimates for the CSI at the transmitter (CSIT) can be simultaneously generated in real-time. Meanwhile, the weights of Stage-II can be broadcasted to the users for real-time estimation of the CSI at the receiver (CSIR) at each user. Simulation shows that the proposed solution achieves higher CE performance than traditional compressive sensing (CS)-based algorithms while enjoying much faster computation. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning-based joint transceiver design algorithm for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which consists of deep neural network (DNN)-aided pilot training, channel feedback, and hybrid analog-digital (HAD) precoding. Specifically, we develop a DNN architecture that maps the received pilots into feedback bits at the receiver, and then further maps the feedback bits into the hybrid precoder at the transmitter. To reduce the signaling overhead and channel state information (CSI) mismatch caused by the transmission delay, a two-timescale DNN composed of a long-term DNN and a short-term DNN is developed. The analog precoders are designed by the long-term DNN based on the CSI statistics and updated once in a frame consisting of a number of time slots. In contrast, the digital precoders are optimized by the short-term DNN at each time slot based on the estimated low-dimensional equivalent CSI matrices. A two-timescale training method is also developed for the proposed DNN with a binary layer. We then analyze the generalization ability and signaling overhead for the proposed DNN based algorithm. Simulation results show that our proposed technique significantly outperforms conventional schemes in terms of bit-error rate performance with reduced signaling overhead and shorter pilot sequences. In massive machine-type communications (mMTC), the conflict between millions of potential access devices and limited channel freedom leads to a sharp decrease in spectrum efficiency. The nature of sporadic activity in mMTC provides a solution to enhance spectrum efficiency by employing compressive sensing (CS) to perform multiuser detection (MUD). However, CS-MUD suffers from high computation complexity and fails to meet the strict latency requirement in some critical applications. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) based framework for grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA), where we utilize the information distilled from the initial data recovery phase to further enhance channel estimation, which in turn improves data recovery performance. Besides, we design an interpretable and structured Model-driven Prior Information Aided Network (M-PIAN) and provide theoretical analysis that demonstrates the proposed M-PIAN can converge faster and support more users. Wireless communications systems are impacted by multi-path fading and Doppler shift in dynamic environments, where the channel becomes doubly-dispersive and its estimation becomes an arduous task. Only a few pilots are used for channel estimation in conventional approaches to preserve high data rate transmission. Consequently, such estimators experience a significant performance degradation in high mobility scenarios. Recently, deep learning has been employed for doubly-dispersive channel estimation due to its low-complexity, robustness, and good generalization ability. Against this backdrop, the current paper presents a comprehensive survey on channel estimation techniques based on deep learning by deeply investigating different methods. The study also provides extensive experimental simulations followed by a computational complexity analysis. After considering different parameters such as modulation order, mobility, frame length, and deep learning architecture, the performance of the studied estimators is evaluated in several mobility scenarios. In addition, the source codes are made available online in order to make the results reproducible.
