Biodegradable and eco-friendly composite adsorbent was synthesized from modified jute fiber and gelatin and evaluated its efficacy in removing cadmium (Cd2+), lead (Pb2+), and chromium (Cr3+) ions from an aqueous solution. The prepared sample was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analyses, which revealed that gelatin successfully intercalated into the microcrystalline cellulose matrix. In batch adsorption studies, the effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ions concentration, and temperature on the removal of heavy metal ions were investigated. The adsorption capacity of the composite varied with changing parameters, and the maximum removal efficiency obtained for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+ was 95%, 88%, and 70%, respectively, at pH 6 with 60 ppm of each metal ions concentration and an adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g L−1. Different functional groups in composite adsorbent facilitated heavy metal ions adsorption. Five error analysis methods were used to evaluate the fit the goodness of the data. The equilibrium adsorption and kinetic data were well-fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order, respectively. Moreover, the thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption was spontaneous, chemisorption, and endothermic. Our work offers a sustainable and biodegradable composite synthesized from modified jute fiber and gelatin for multimetal ions removal from an aqueous, which is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional nonbiodegradable adsorbents with potential environmental risks. Most galvanic process industries treat their effluents by chemical precipitation methods. Such a method produces an amount of galvanic sludge that is often disposed of inappropriately to the environment, causing major environmental damage. These rejects present high concentrations of toxic metallic ions, such as copper (Cu(II)), lead (Pb(II)), nickel (Ni(II)), and cadmium (Cd(II)). Several alternatives have been proposed to contribute in a cheaper and efficient way to treat these effluents. This study aimed to describe the results obtained in the removal of the concentrations of Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions, present in an aqueous solution, by the use of a hybrid system combining the adsorption and electroflotation processes simultaneously. The adsorbent materials used were two Brazilian soil clays classified as sodium clay (SC) and ferric clay (FC). For the electroflotation process, aluminum, iron, and stainless-steel electrodes were used. The obtained data showed good efficiency in the removal of the four metallic ion concentrations. The best results presented a reduction in the concentration of Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions of 50.11%, 36.71%, 21.59%, and 23.43%, respectively, when it was used the hybrid system formed by the ferrous clay as adsorbent and the aluminum electrode for the electroflotation process. Removal of heavy metal ions such as cadmium, lead, chromium, and iron from industrial wastewater is one of the most critical environmental problems. In this research, natural and low-cost adsorbents like the tangerine peel, bovine gut, tea waste, and sunflower seed hull were used for adsorption of heavy metals, such as chromium and iron, from contaminated solutions. The effects of environmental factors such as contact time, pH, the amount of adsorbent dose, and the initial concentration of metal ions in synthetic solution were investigated to obtain optimal conditions for the adsorption of heavy metal ions. For separation of chromium metal ion from aqueous solution, tea waste, tangerine peel, bovine gut, and sunflower seeds hull showed adsorption capacity of 85%, 51%, 46%, and 34%, respectively, while for the adsorption of iron (III), the adsorption capacities of tea waste, bovine gut, tangerine peel, and sunflower seeds hull were 96%, 96%, and 87%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms were in decent correlation with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics of iron and chromium has a proper validation with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The BET and FTIR analyses were also reported to investigate the adsorption properties. This study suggests these adsorbents as low-cost and economical materials for the adsorption of chromium and iron ions with a high adsorption rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is the valorization of the Moroccan clays (QC-MC and QC-MT) from the Middle Atlas region as adsorbents for the treatment of water contaminated by cadmium Cd (II) ions. The physicochemical properties of natural clays are characterized by ICP-MS, XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques. The adsorption process is investigated as a function of adsorbent mass, solution pH, contact time, temperature, and initial Cd (II) ion concentration. The kinetic investigation shows that the adsorption equilibrium of Cd (II) ions by both natural clays is reached after 30 min for QC-MT and 45 min for QC-MC and fits well to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isotherm study is best fitted by a Freundlich model, with the maximum adsorption capacity determined by the linear form of the Freundlich isotherm being 4.23 mg/g for QC-MC and 5.85 mg/g for QC-MT at 25°C. The cadmium adsorption process was thermodynamically spontaneous and exothermic. The regeneration process showed that these natural clays had excellent recycling capacity. Characterization of the Moroccan natural clays before and after the adsorption process through FTIR, SEM, XRD, and EDX techniques confirmed the Cd (II) ion adsorption on the surfaces of both natural clay adsorbents. Overall, the high adsorption capacity of both natural clays for Cd (II) ions removal compared to other adsorbents motioned in the literature indicated that these two natural adsorbents are excellent candidates for heavy metal removal from aqueous environments.
