Key metals important for the green energy transition concentrate during magmatic-hydrothermal processes. In porphyry deposits, epithermal mineralization can overprint earlier higher-temperature systems. It is not well understood whether mineralization occurs in a single evolving system or forms during pulsed, episodic overprinting events. The timing and duration of fluid flow therefore remain key data gaps in deposit models, but they are essential factors for understanding metal (re)mobilization and concentration processes. Carbonates are common gangue minerals that precipitate during fluid flow and can be dated using the U-Pb method, thereby directly dating hydrothermal processes. Here, 41 new U-Pb dates from a fault-controlled porphyry-epithermal system in Yukon, Canada, reveal a >50 m.y. record of carbonate precipitation between ca. 77 and 19 Ma. Results support a model of pulsed, episodic fluid flow, rather than a single evolving system, where epithermal carbonate precipitation at ca. 74–67 Ma was both coeval with and significantly postdated Cretaceous porphyry-related magmatism. Overprinting events at ca. 62–56 Ma, ca. 51–47 Ma, and younger than 40 Ma were not responsible for primary metal deposition but may have contributed to metal enrichment. Carbonate dates coincide with periods of brecciation and fault slip. Fault movement therefore enabled episodic overprinting by epithermal mineralization, mobilizing and (re)concentrating metals. This comprehensive reconstruction of a long-lived magmatic-hydrothermal system tracks the transition from porphyry to epithermal environments, demonstrating the power of carbonate U-Pb dating for critical minerals research. Dating the onset of ancient (>1 Ma) karstification is a challenge. One approach is to date the earliest calcite cements in speleothems. We show the benefits of in situ U-Pb dating directly on thin sections from ancient (ca. 30 Ma) thin (<1 mm) speleothems in the karstified Lower Oligocene lacustrine-palustrine carbonates of the Paris Basin (France), which cannot be dated using other methods. We dated 32 calcite rafts (a type of speleothem), one geopetal cement, and 10 calcite cements precipitated along the karstic walls. The ages of the calcite rafts and cements at 29 ± 1 Ma (Lower Oligocene) fall within the age range of the host deposits (≈29 Ma) previously deduced from palaeontological evidence. We demonstrate that cementation of the carbonate host rock, its dissolution, and the speleothem precipitation occurred within 2 m.y. after deposition. Ostracods and intraclasts trapped within Rupelian calcite rafts clearly indicate that the karst developed deep underground shortly before a phase of lacustrine-palustrine sedimentation at the surface. This very early dissolution episode is attributed to the uplift of the Paris Basin as a result of the far-field intraplate deformation induced by the alpine orogenesis. This study shows that in situ U-Pb geochronology on ancient calcite rafts is a promising technique for the indirect dating of karstification and, more broadly, for dating geodynamic events and diagenetic evolution of sedimentary basins. The chemical and isotopic characteristics of a solidified pluton represent the integration of magmatic and sub-solidus processes operating across a range of spatial and temporal scales during pluton construction, crystallization, and cooling. Disentangling these processes and understanding where chemical and isotopic signatures were acquired requires the combination of multiple tools tracing processes at different time and length scales. We combine whole-rock oxygen and Sr-Nd isotopes, zircon oxygen isotopes and trace elements, and mineral compositions with published high-precision U-Pb zircon geochronology to evaluate differentiation within the bimodal Guadalupe Igneous Complex, Sierra Nevada, California (USA). The complex was constructed in ~300 k.y. between 149 and 150 Ma. Felsic magmas crystallized as centimeter- to meter-sized segregations in gabbros in the lower part of the complex and as granites and granophyres structurally above the gabbros. A central mingling zone separates the mafic and felsic units. Pluton-wide δ18O(whole-rock), δ18O(zircon), and Sr-Nd isotopic ranges are too large to be explained by in situ, closed-system differentiation, instead requiring open-system behavior at all scales. Low δ18O(whole-rock) and δ18O(zircon) values indicate assimilation of hydrothermally altered marine host rocks during ascent and/or emplacement. In situ differentiation processes operated on a smaller scale (meters to tens of meters) for at least ~200 k.y. via (1) percolation and segregation of chemically and isotopically diverse silicic interstitial melt from a heterogeneous gabbro mush; (2) crystal accumulation; and (3) sub-solidus, high-temperature, hydrothermal alteration at the shallow roof of the complex to modify the chemical and isotopic characteristics. Whole-rock and mineral chemistry in combination with geochronology allows deciphering open-system differentiation processes at the outcrop to pluton scale from magmatic to sub-solidus temperatures over time scales of hundreds of thousands to millions of years. The Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash contain some of the highest topography in the Andes and provide insight into tectonomagmatic processes associated with the onset of flat-slab subduction. These adjacent ranges shared a similar history of deformation and exhumation prior to the late Miocene, when synconvergent extension began in the Cordillera Blanca. Magmatism in the Cordillera Huayhuash has been inferred as coeval with magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca. Yet, extension, which has been correlated with magmatic heat flow, is limited to the Cordillera Blanca. New zircon U-Pb dates and trace and rare earth element concentrations from the Cordillera Blanca batholith and the Huayllapa pluton in the Cordillera Huayhuash and reassessment of existing zircon data help to characterize regional magmatic processes prior to the establishment of flat-slab subduction. Two compositionally distinct samples of the Huayllapa pluton yielded mean ages of 24.8 ± 0.4 Ma and 25.4 ± 0.8 Ma. In contrast, the Cordillera Blanca batholith has a protracted crystallization history postdating that of the Cordillera Huayhuash by up to 20 m.y. Miocene magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca began at 19 Ma and ended with injection of large volumes of geochemically distinct, mantle-derived magma from 10 to 5 Ma. We suggest that 6–5 Ma magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca promoted elevated heat flow and reduced shear strength, which facilitated extensional shearing along the western slopes of the range, whereas colder amagmatic crust in the Cordillera Huayhuash inhibited southward propagation of faulting. Our data demonstrate that the linkages between magmatism and elevated heat flow identified in the Cordillera Blanca are important driving processes in initiating extension in cordilleran-style orogenies. Miocene breakup of Svalbard from Greenland formed a deep oceanic gateway that enabled circulation between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, significantly changing the global climate. However, the timing of events remains unclear. An excellent opportunity to constrain this timing is found onshore western Svalbard, where the Sarsbukta fault forms the eastern margin of the Eocene–Oligocene Forlandsundet basin. Here, we present new results from U-Pb dating of calcite precipitated in fault-related veins to constrain the timing of Sarsbukta fault deformation and the evolution of the basin. Our oldest calcite age is Permo-Triassic, suggesting long-lived deformation along the fault. A cluster of ages between 41 and 33 Ma overlaps with fossil-based depositional ages from parts of the Forlandsundet basin. These data indicate that onshore transtension partly pre-dated the well-established Chron 13 (magnetic polarity time scale; 35.5–33.7 Ma) reorganization of spreading ridges in the North Atlantic. Our youngest age of 13 Ma indicates that faulting persisted long after the preserved basin fill was deposited. If seafloor spreading marked the end of extension of continental crust, Molloy Ridge spreading during Chron 5 (19.6–9.8 Ma) may have initiated after 13 Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arc-arc amalgamation occurs during the evolution of composite orogens at convergent plate margins and plays a critical role in controlling accretionary patterns and processes. The eastern Junggar terrane in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt underwent a long-lived subduction-accretion process in the Paleozoic, but whether and how the Yemaquan and Dananhu-Harlik arcs were amalgamated remain debatable. A systematic U-Pb-Hf-O isotopic study was conducted on zircons from Silurian granitic rocks in the Yemaquan arc. The U-Pb dating results suggest that these rocks were emplaced at 433-422 Ma and inherited abundant 536-435 Ma zircons representing a predominant magmatic episode in the Yemaquan arc. Their positive εHf(t) values and young Hf model ages indicate that the Yemaquan arc is dominated by juvenile basement with significant crustal growth during the Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic. The variations in zircon Eu/Eu*, εHf(t), and δ18O values reveal that the Yemaquan arc experienced remarkable crustal thickening and remobilization at ca. 450 Ma, similar to the northern Dananhu-Harlik arc, and this was followed by extension that initiated at ca. 420 Ma. These features support the amalgamation of these two arcs occurring ca. 450-420 Ma. Integrated with regional data, we correlated this amalgamation event in the eastern Junggar terrane with the orogenic event in the Chinese Altai terrane, and we propose a middle Paleozoic tectonic evolution model in the eastern Junggar-Altai area from arc assembly to dispersal in association with a transition in accretionary mode. Direct dating of vertebrate fossils is difficult due to complex postburial diagenetic processes and the often low and heterogeneous concentration of radioisotopes (e.g., U) in fossilized bone material. Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to dating vertebrate fossils via laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb dating of early diagenetic calcite cements precipitated within bone cavities of a Jurassic sauropod from the Sichuan Basin, South China. Early diagenetic calcite yielded a U-Pb age of 165.3 ± 3.6/5.6 Ma, in agreement with a maximum depositional age of 165.8 ± 1.0 Ma from detrital zircon ages of the surrounding rocks, suggesting that diagenesis occurred shortly after the death of the sauropod. This new age demonstrates that the best-known Jurassic large sauropod faunas in South China are much older than those in North America and Africa, suggesting the geographical isolation of South China. Authigenic apatite U-Pb dating on the fibrolamellar bones from the same sauropod gave a distinctly younger age, indicating more complex U-Pb system behavior, possibly due to U uptake by residual organic matter and recrystallization of apatite after early diagenesis. Our findings demonstrate that U-Pb dating of calcite cements within bone cavities has significant potential for constraining the burial age of vertebrate fossils, which could aid in constructing a more robust temporal framework for the radiation and evolution of vertebrates. Arc magmas are produced from the mantle wedge, with possible addition of fluids and melts derived from serpentinites and sediments in the subducting slab. Identification of various sources and their relevant contributions to such magmas is challenging; in particular, at continental arcs where crustal assimilation may overprint initial geochemical signatures. This study presents oxygen isotopic compositions of zoned olivine grains from post-caldera basalts and boron contents and isotopes of these basalts and glassy melt inclusions hosted in quartz and clinopyroxene of silicic tuffs in the Toba volcanic system, Indonesia. High-magnesian (≥87 mol% Fo [forsterite]) cores of olivine in the basalts have δ18O values ranging from 5.12‰ to 6.14‰, indicating that the mantle source underneath Toba is variably enriched in 18O. Olivine with <87 mol% Fo has highly variable (4.8-7.2‰), but overall increased, δ18O values, interpreted to reflect assimilation of high δ18O crustal materials during fractional crystallization. Mass balance calculations constrain the overall volume of crustal assimilation for the basalts as ≤13%. The processes responsible for the 18O-enriched basaltic melts are further constrained by boron data that indicate the addition of <0.1 wt% fluids to the mantle, >40% of the fluids being derived from serpentinites and others from altered oceanic crust and sediments. This amount of fluids can increase δ18O of the magma by only ∼0.02‰. Approximately 6-9% sediment-derived melt hybridization in the mantle wedge is further needed to yield basaltic melts with δ18O values in equilibrium with those of the high-Fo olivine cores. The cogenetic silicic tuffs, on the other hand, seem to record a higher proportion of fluid addition dominated by sediment-derived fluids to the mantle source, in addition to crustal assimilation. Our reconnaissance study therefore demonstrates the application of combined B and O isotopes to differentiate between melts and fluids derived from serpentinites and sediments in the subducted slab-an application that can be applied to arc magmas worldwide. A suite of subduction-related early Triassic igneous rocks crops out in the Pingxiang area of the DianQiong suture (DQS) in southwest China; this suite represents an important geological record of subduction and closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. In this study, we report geochronological, geochemical, and NdHf isotope data for newly discovered rhyolites and biotite granites in the Pingxiang area. We use these data to constrain their emplacement ages, origins, and geodynamic implications. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the rhyolites and biotite granites were emplaced at 251–250 Ma and 249 Ma (early Triassic), respectively. The rhyolites and biotite granites have elevated FeOT/(FeOT + MgO) (0.78–0.89) and 10,000 × Ga/Al (2.83–4.11) ratios, with geochemical affinities to A2-type granites. These rocks are enriched in some large-ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Th, and Ba) and depleted in high-field-strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti), indicating their formation in a subduction-related arc. The rhyolites and biotite granites have negative whole-rock εNd(t) (−11.5 to −9.7) and zircon εHf(t) (−14.5 to −6.2) values, suggesting that these magmas were derived from an ancient crust-dominated source. Geochemical and Nd isotope data reveal that the peraluminous A2-type rhyolites and biotite granites were derived by partial melting of felsic crustal rocks under low-pressure and high-temperature conditions. By integrating all the available data with the regional tectonic evolution of the southwestern Youjiang Basin and adjacent regions, we attribute the generation of the peraluminous A2-type rhyolites and biotite granites to the extensional setting that existed during oceanic subduction, which was induced by roll-back of the Paleo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere at 251–249 Ma. The evolution of strain in nascent continental plate boundaries commonly involves distributed deformation and transitions between different styles of deformation as the plate boundary matures. Distributed NW-striking faults, many with km-scale right-lateral separation, are prevalent near Blythe, California, and have been variably interpreted to have accommodated either Middle Miocene NE-SW extension as normal faults or Late Miocene to Pliocene dextral shear as strike-slip faults. However, with poor timing and kinematic constraints, it is unclear how these faults relate to known domains of Neogene deformation and the evolution of the Pacific–North America plate boundary. We present kinematic data (n = 642 fault planes, n = 512 slickenlines) that demonstrate that these faults dominantly dip steeply northeast; ~96% of measured faults record normal, dextral, or oblique dextral-normal kinematics that likely reflect a gradational transition between normal and dextral oblique kinematic regimes. We constrain fault timing with 11.7 Ma and 7.0 Ma 40Ar/39Ar dates of rocks cut by faults, and laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb dating of calcite mineralized during oblique dextral faulting that demonstrates fault slip at ca. 10–7 Ma and perhaps as late as ca. 4 Ma. This Late Miocene dextral oblique faulting is best compatible with a documented regional transition from Early to Middle Miocene NE-directed extension during detachment fault slip to subsequent NW-directed dextral shear. We estimate 11–38 km of cumulative dextral slip occurred across a 50-km-wide zone from the Palen to Riverside mountains, including up to 20 km of newly documented dextral shear that may partly alleviate the regional discrepancy of cumulative dextral shear along this part of the Late Miocene Pacific–North America plate boundary. Palaeomagnetic studies in the Malani Igneous Suite (ca. 770-750 Ma) of the Marwar Crustal Block, NW India, provide essential constraints on palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Rodinia Supercontinent. The Malani Igneous Suite is intrusive into megacrystic granite and granite-gneissic enclaves of the Marwar Crustal Block. A crustal-scale NE-SW ductile transpressional shear zone with a southeasterly dip known as the Phulad Shear Zone (820-810 Ma) separates this Marwar Crustal Block from the rocks farther east. The pre-shearing tectonic evolution of the Marwar Crustal Block is poorly understood. Three phases of ductile deformations (D1, D2, and D3, with associated fabrics S1, S2, and S3) were identified in the Marwar Crustal Block. The D1 deformation is restricted to enclave gneisses. The megacrystic granite was emplaced syn-tectonically during D2 deformation. The S2 magmatic foliation (NNW-SSE) in the megacrystic granite is oblique to the Phulad Shear Zone. The D3 deformation in the megacrystic granite is synchronous with the Phulad Shear Zone mylonites. Another porphyritic granite (Phulad granite, ca. 820 Ma) emplaced syn-tectonically during D3 deformation along and across the Phulad Shear Zone. U-Pb zircon dates in the Marwar Crustal Block document ca. 890 Ma and ca. 860 Ma magmatic dates. U-Pb-Th monazite dates in the Marwar Crustal Block show a strong peak at ca. 820 Ma. By integrating critical field relations, deformational patterns, and geochronology, we argue that the Marwar Crustal Block shows distinct geological evolution prior to its accretion with the remaining parts of India. We propose that the accretion of the Marwar Crustal Block must be younger than ca. 860 Ma and culminated during ca. 820-810 Ma to form the Greater India landmass along the Phulad Shear Zone. The Jurassic Chon Aike Silicic Large Igneous Province (Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula) is dominated by voluminous, crust-derived magmas (235,000 km³) that erupted as predominately explosive silicic material over ~40 m.y. In this study, we combine petrological descriptions and bulk-rock major- and trace-element compositions with quartz oxygen-isotope measurements from multiple silicic units (primarily ignimbrites and some rhyolitic flows) from two of the five silicic formations in Patagonia. We have identified that quartz oxygen-isotope values are high (>9°-12°). Quartz phenocrysts analyzed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) are also homogeneous at the microscale with no measurable change in isotope value with respect to internal and often complex zoning textures. The ubiquity of widespread high d18O rhyolites and their trace-element compositions support their origin from melting of a metasedimentary source with a similarly high d18O value. Mass balance calculations require that an average of >75% melt derived from partial melting of the dominant basement lithology is needed to explain the isotopic and chemical composition of the rhyolites. The ideal P-T environment was identified by thermodynamic models for fluid-absent melting of graywackes at 900 °C and 5 kbar. Regional-scale crustal melting occurred during a widespread, high heat-flux environment within an extensional setting during the breakup of the Gondwanan supercontinent. The overlap of a unique tectonic and igneous environment, combined with a fertile crust dominated by graywacke and pelitic compositions in southern Patagonia, generated large volumes of some of the highest d18O silicic magmas documented in the geologic record. The Variscan orogen in southern Ireland and Britain is characterized by an intensely deformed, E-W-trending fold-and-thrust belt. Farther north in Ireland, the Carboniferous North Dublin Basin exhibits tight chevron folds and kinematically linked en echelon vein sets, along with bedding-parallel veins with slickenfibers. This deformation is assumed to be Variscan in age, despite lying 150 km north of the supposed Variscan "front." The laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb dating of these calcite veins undertaken for this study showed that relict Variscan U-Pb ages are very poorly preserved. Instead, late Eocene ages were obtained from many calcite veins, including fold hinge breccias and bedding-parallel slickenfiber veins associated with N-S shortening (flex-ural slip). Also, U-Pb ages from one bedding-parallel vein showed protracted flexural slip over --5 m.y. during late Eocene times. Detection of the growth domains within this vein was facilitated by the imaging approach to LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating adopted in this study, which can identify age-homogeneous domains by integrating spatial U-Pb isotopic information with maps of petrogenetically diagnostic major and trace elements. The late Eocene fold reactivation phase was hitherto undetected on the Irish mainland, but regional Cenozoic N-directed shortening has been documented in Mesozoic-Cenozoic sequences of the southern Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, southern England, and the Paris Basin. We attribute late Eocene fold reactivation to far-field, N-directed shortening associated with the Alpine/Pyrenean orogenies. It is likely that many Variscan or Caledonian folds, particularly in southern onshore Ireland, were reactivated during Eocene-Oligocene shortening, which has not been recognized to date because of the lack of post-Variscan markers (e.g., dikes, Mesozoic-Cenozoic cover sequences). The ~5 km³, 4.54–4.09 Ma Caspana ignimbrite of the Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex (APVC) of the Central Andes records the eruption of an andesite and two distinct rhyolitic magmas. It provides a unique opportunity to investigate the production of silicic magmas in a continental arc flare-up, where small volumes of magma rarely survive homogenization into the regional magmatic system that is dominated by supereruptions of monotonous dacitic ignimbrites. The fall deposit and thin flow unit that record the first stage of the eruption (Phase 1) tapped a crystal-poor peraluminous rhyolite. The petrological and geochemical characteristics of Phase 1 are best explained by partial melting of or reheating and melt extraction from a granodioritic intrusion. Phase 2 of the eruption records the emplacement of a more extensive flow unit with a crystal-poor, fayalite-bearing rhyolite and a porphyritic to glomeroporphyritic andesite containing abundant plagioclase-orthopyroxene-Fe-Ti oxide (norite) glomerocrysts. The isotopic composition of Phase 2 is significantly more “crustal” than Phase 1, indicating a separate petrogenetic path. The mineral assemblage of the noritic glomerocrysts and the observed trend between andesite and Phase 2 rhyolite are reproduced by rhyolite-MELTS–based models. Pressure-temperature-water (P-T-H2O) estimates indicate that the main (Phase 2) reservoir resided between 400 and 200 MPa, with the andesite recording the deeper pressures and a temperature range of 920–1060°C. Rhyolite phase equilibria predict an estimated temperature of ~775 °C and ~5 wt% H2O. Pressures derived from phase equilibria indicate that the rhyolite was extracted directly from the noritic cumulate at ~340 MPa and stored at slightly shallower pressures (200–300 MPa) prior to eruption. The rhyolite-MELTS models reveal that latent-heat buffering during the extraction and storage process results in a shallow liquidus during the extensive crystallization that produced a noritic cumulate in equilibrium with a rhyodacitic residual liquid. Spikes in latent heat facilitated the segregation of the residual liquid, creating the pre-eruptive compositional gap of ~16 wt% SiO2 between the andesite and the Phase 2 rhyolite. Unlike typical Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex (APVC) magmas, low ƒO2 conditions in the andesite promoted co-crystallization of orthopyroxene and ilmenite in lieu of clinopyroxene and magnetite. This resulted in relatively high Fe concentrations in the rhyodacite and Phase 2 rhyolite. Combined with the co-crystallization of plagioclase, this low oxidation state forced high Fe2+/Mg and Fe/Ca in the Phase 2 rhyolite, which promoted fayalite stability. The dominance of low Fe3+/FeTot and Fe-Ti oxide equilibria indicates low ƒO2 (ΔFMQ 0 − ΔFMQ − 1) conditions in the rhyolite were inherited from the andesite. We propose that the serendipitous location on the periphery of the regional thermal anomaly of the Altiplano-Puna magma body (APMB) permitted the small-volume magma reservoir that fed the Caspana ignimbrite eruption to retain its heterogeneous character. This resulted in the record of rhyolitic liquids with disparate origins that evaded assimilation into the large dacite supereruption-feeding APMB. A late Carboniferous to early Permian carbonate and evaporite succession from the Finnmark Platform (southern Barents Sea) contains nodules of anhydrite partially to fully replaced by calcite spar and native sulfur genetically linked to hydrocarbon migration and/or oxidation, analogous to processes observed in salt diapir caprocks in the Gulf of Mexico. In situ U-Pb dating of this calcite spar therefore has the potential to directly date hydrocarbon migration and provide further insight into the geochemical and temperature conditions during this event when coupled with traditional stable and clumped isotope ratios (δ13C, δ18O, and Δ47). Results indicate calcite formed ca. 50-15 Ma, postdating host-rock deposition by 250-285 m.y. Strongly negative δ13C values in the calcite spar (mean = -15‰) are consistent with a major contribution of carbon from hydrocarbons, and Δ47 paleothermometry indicates a mean precipitation temperature of 46 ± 11 °C. Newly formed oceanic crust is altered by seawater and carbonated at low temperatures over poorly defined periods of time. We applied in situ U-Pb dating to investigate 28 carbonate veins from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 801C, which is situated in the oldest Jurassic-age oceanic crust preserved in the western Pacific Ocean. Our results indicate that Pacific Ocean crust began accreting at 192 ± 6 Ma, which is ~25 m.y. earlier than previously recognized. Carbonation peaked at 171 ± 5 Ma and continued at a low rate for more than ~65 m.y. after accretion. Jurassic carbonation rates varied over ~10 m.y. timescales but encompassed a range similar to that observed today. These data suggest that carbonation rates are relatively insensitive to changes in atmospheric CO2, but confirm the longevity of seafloor alteration as a critical control in global volatile cycling. The Cordillera of Canada and Alaska is a type example of an accretionary orogen, but the origin of some terranes remains contentious (e.g., Stikinia of British Columbia and Yukon, Canada). Presented herein are igneous and detrital zircon U/Pb-Hf and trace-element data, as well as the first radiolarian ages from the Asitka Group, the basement to eastern Stikinia. The data are used to evaluate the role of juvenile and ancient crust in the evolution of Stikinia and the tectonic environment of magmatism. Two rhyolites are dated by U-Pb zircon at 288.64 ± 0.21 Ma and 293.89 ± 0.31 Ma, with εHf(t) = +10. Red chert contains radiolarians that are correlated with P. scalprata m. rhombothoracata + Ruzhencevispongus uralicus assemblages (Artinskian-Kungurian). Detrital zircon U/Pb-Hf from a rare Asitka Group sandstone have a mode at ca. 320 Ma and εHf(t) +10 to +16; the detrital zircon suite includes five Paleoproterozoic zircons (~5% of the population). Detrital zircons from a stratigraphically overlying Hazelton Group (Telkwa Formation) volcanic sandstone indicate deposition at ca. 196 Ma with zircon εHf(t) that are on a crustal evolution line anchored from the Asitka Group. Zircon trace-element data indicate that the Carboniferous detrital zircons formed in an ocean arc environment. The Proterozoic detrital zircons were derived from a peripheral landmass, but there is no zircon εHf(t) evidence that such a landmass played any role in the magmatic evolution of eastern Stikinia. The data support that eastern Stikinia formed on Paleozoic ocean floor during the Carboniferous to early Permian. Consistent with previous fossil modeling, zircon statistical comparisons demonstrate that Stikinia and Wrangellia were related terranes during the Carboniferous to Permian, and they evolved separately from Yukon-Tanana terrane and cratonic North America. Carbonate U-Pb dating of samples from rift-bounding faults of intracontinental basins in the Borborema province, northeastern Brazil, indicate recurrent tectonic activity during Pangea breakup lasting for >150 m.y. from the Late Triassic to the Paleocene, reactivating inherited strike-slip Neoproterozoic--Cambrian shear zones. Triassic ages indicate that brittle deformation started some 80 m.y. before previously known, most likely related to rifting along the incipient Central Atlantic. The subsequent Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic caused renewed fault activity during rifting and basin development. Furthermore, recurrent Cenozoic tectonic activity along the rift-bounding faults is indicated, suggesting that structural inheritance of the Neoproterozoic--Cambrian continental-scale Borborema shear zone system has been responsible for accommodation of recurrent tectonic stress from Mesozoic rifting to the present day. The early Paleoproterozoic was a time of unprecedented change in Earth's climate and surface environment. The key to resolving some of the controversies surrounding the timing and causes of these changes lies with supracrustal sequences, such as the 2.45-2.22 Ga Turee Creek Group in the southern Pilbara craton, northwestern Australia. The group preserves a predominantly siliciclastic sequence; however, its precise age, tectonic setting, and postdepositional history are disputed. Although it is interpreted to have been deposited in a foreland basin setting shortly after 2.45 Ga, the oldest well-recognized deformational event, marked by northward folding and thrusting, is the 2.20-2.15 Ga Ophthalmia orogeny. Evidence for a pre-Ophthalmia fabric-forming tectonic event north of the Archean Sylvania Inlier, southeast Pilbara craton, which is marked by tight to isoclinal folding, has been largely overlooked. In this area, we report in situ U-Pb geochronology of authigenic monazite and xenotime in shale with a well-developed tectonic cleavage from the ca. 2.63 Ga Jeerinah Formation. Monazite porphyroblasts, which are locally wrapped by strain fringes aligned in a tectonic cleavage, yielded weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb ages at 2370 ± 11 Ma and 2312 ± 8 Ma, whereas xenotime, which overprints a crenulation cleavage, gave a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2291 ± 11 Ma, constraining fabric development to between 2.31 Ga and 2.29 Ga. Our results confirm the existence of a pre-Ophthalmia deformational event in the southeastern Pilbara craton, herein referred to as the Sylvania orogeny, which is part of an ~300 m.y. interval (2.45-2.15 Ga) of northward-directed compression ("Hamersley orogenic cycle"). This orogenic cycle is marked by east-west and northwest-southeast folding, cleavage development, veining, hydrothermal gold mineralization, and isotopic resetting across the southern Pilbara craton. Our results indicate that the syn--Great Oxidation Event Turee Creek Group was deposited in one or more foreland basins after 2.45 Ga. Our results provide a new tectonostratigraphic and geodynamic framework for understanding the timing and origin of geochemical records in a key succession deposited during an interval of global environmental change. Mid-ocean ridge and ocean-island basalts provide vital but incomplete insights into mantle chemistry. For example, high-anorthite plagioclase is generally too refractory and incompatibleelement depleted to have crystallized from the melts that carry it to the surface. Moreover, erupted basalts rarely preserve the extreme isotopic and incompatible-element depletions found in some primitive melt inclusions and residual abyssal peridotites. By integrating experimental observations with analyses of natural crystals and glasses, we infer that high-anorthite plagioclase grows from high-degree melts of refractory but otherwise unexotic mantle sources with depleted incompatible-element compositions. The widespread occurrence of high-anorthite plagioclase in oceanic basalts and the oceanic crust hence indicates that refractory melts pervade the uppermost mantle and lower crust. We thus suggest that refractory melts play much a greater role in crustal accretion than typically recognized and that refractory and feasibly depleted peridotite is more prevalent in the upper mantle than previously thought. Tracing secondary oil migration pathways is critical for understanding petroleum system evolution histories. Traditional tools (e.g., molecular indicators and numerical modeling) utilized for evaluating oil migration processes either lead to ambiguous interpretations or only provide qualitative estimates. We quantitatively constrain secondary oil migration processes under an absolute time frame by integrating oil-inclusion fluorescence and in situ calcite U-Pb dating on calcite veins and cements hosting primary oil inclusions. Fluorescence spectra of oil inclusions and U-Pb ages were obtained on samples from ultra-deep Ordovician reservoirs along two major faults in the Halahatang oilfield, Tarim Basin (northwestern China). Absolute U-Pb ages suggest two main oil charge events during 475-433 Ma and 294-262 Ma, respectively, and revealed a northward-decreasing trend for oil maturity during single charge events. Vertical migration of oil from in situ source rock through active (or reactivated) faults is believed to be the key process inducing the spatial maturity variation in charged oils and considered as the main mechanism of secondary migration, with brecciated fault zones and dilatant fractures along faults acting as major vertical oil-migration pathways. The timing and processes of ductile deformation and metasomatism can be documented us- ing apatite petrochronology. We integrated microstructural, U-Pb, and geochemical analyses of apatite grains from an exhumed mylonitic shear zone in the St. Barthélémy Massif, Pyrenees, France, to understand how deformation and metasomatism are recorded by U-Pb dates and geochemical patterns. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses documents crystal plastic deformation characterized by low-angle boundaries (<5°) associated with dislocation creep and evidence of multiple slip systems. Laser ablation--inductively coupled plasma--mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb maps indicate that dates in deformed grains reflect, and are governed by, low-angle dislocation boundaries. Apatite rare earth element (REE) and U-Pb behavior is decoupled in high-grade gneiss samples, suggesting REEs record higher-temperature processes than U-Pb isotopic systems. Apatite from (ultra)mylonitic portions of the shear zone showed evidence of metasomatism, and the youngest dates constrain the age of metasomatism. Collectively, these results demonstrate that crystal plastic microstructures and fluid interactions can markedly change apatite isotopic signatures, making single-grain apatite petrochronology a powerful tool for dating and characterizing the latest major deformation and/or fluid events, which are often not captured by higher-temperature chronometers. Tandem in situ and isotope dilution U-Pb analysis of zircons from pyroclastic volcanic rocks and both glacial and non-glacial sedimentary strata of the Pocatello Formation (Idaho, northwestern USA) provides new age constraints on Cryogenian glaciation in the North American Cordillera. Two dacitic tuffs sampled within glacigenic strata of the lower diamictite interval of the Scout Mountain Member yield high-precision chemical abrasion isotope dilution U-Pb zircon eruption and depositional ages of 696.43 ± 0.21 and 695.17 ± 0.20 Ma. When supplemented by a new high-precision detrital zircon maximum depositional age of ≤670 Ma for shoreface and offshore sandstones unconformably overlying the lower diamictite, these data are consistent with correlation of the lower diamictite to the early Cryogenian (ca. 717-660 Ma) Sturtian glaciation. These 670-675 Ma zircons persist in beds above the upper diamictite and cap dolostone units, up to and including a purported "reworked fallout tuff," which we instead conclude provides only a maximum depositional age of ≤673 Ma from epiclastic volcanic detritus. Rare detrital zircons as young as 658 Ma provide a maximum depositional age for the upper diamictite and overlying cap dolostone units. This new geochronological framework supports litho- and chemostratigraphic correlations of the lower and upper diamictite intervals of the Scout Mountain Member of the Pocatello Formation with the Sturtian (716-660 Ma) and Marinoan (≤650-635 Ma) low- latitude glaciations, respectively. A Paleozoic arc that formed by southward subduction of the Rheic oceanic plate beneath northern Gondwana has long been inferred, but its history and geochemical signatures remain poorly understood. New U-Pb ages, juvenile εHf signatures, and trace-element composition data of young zircons from tuffs at two southern Laurentia sites indicate their derivation from a continental arc that was active from ca. 328 to ca. 317 Ma and permit correlation of sedimentary sequences 800 km apart in southern Laurentia. These include the Stanley tuffs in the Ouachita Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Arkansas and the newly discovered Barnett tuff in the subsurface of the Midland Basin in west Texas (USA). The Barnett tuff has a zircon chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry U-Pb date of 327.8 ± 0.8 Ma, similar to the oldest Stanley tuff in the Ouachita Mountains. Zircon Hf isotope depleted mantle model ages further suggest that the source was a continental arc on basement with both Grenville and Pan-African affinities, pointing to northern Gondwana or peri-Gondwana terranes. The new data link the tuffs to granitoids (326 Ma) of the Maya block in southern Mexico, which was part of northern Gondwana. Correlation of the Stanley-Barnett tuffs across southern Laurentia suggests the likely presence of Mississippian tuffs over a broad region in southern Laurentia, and their usefulness for constraining absolute ages of basin fills and characterizing the Gondwanan arc. The propagating margins of igneous sills (and other sheet intrusions) may divide into laterally and/or vertically separated sections, which later inflate and coalesce. These components elongate parallel to and thus record the magma flow direction, and they can form either due to fracture segmentation (i.e., "segments") or brittle and/or non-brittle deformation of the host rock (i.e., "magma fingers"). Seismic reflection data can image entire sills or sill-complexes in 3-D, and their resolution is often sufficient to allow us to identify these distinct elongate components and thereby map magma flow patterns over entire intrusion networks. However, seismic resolution is limited, so we typically cannot discern the centimeter-to meter-scale host rock deformation structures that would allow the origin of these components to be interpreted. Here, we introduce a new term that defines the components (i.e., "elements") of sheet-like igneous intrusions without linking their description to emplacement mechanisms. Using 3-D seismic reflection data from offshore NW Australia, we quantify the 3-D geometry of these elements and their connectors within two sills and discuss how their shape may relate to emplacement processes. Based on seismic attribute analyses and our measurements of their 3-D geometry, we conclude that the mapped elements likely formed through non-elastic-brittle and/or non-brittle deformation ahead of the advancing sill tip, which implies they are magma fingers. We show that thickness varies across sills, and across distinct elements, which we infer to represent flow localization and subsequent thickening of restricted areas. The quantification of element geometries is useful for comparisons between different subsurface and field-based data sets that span a range of host rock types and tectonic settings. The origins of many supergiant ore deposits remain unresolved because the factors responsible for such extreme metal enrichments are not understood. One factor of critical importance is the timing of mineralization. However, timing information is commonly confounded by the difficulty of dating ore minerals. The world's largest uranium resource at Olympic Dam, South Australia, is exceptional because the high abundance of U allows U-Pb dating of ore minerals. The Olympic Dam U(-Cu-Au-Ag) ore deposit is hosted in ca. 1.59 Ga rocks, and the consensus has been that the supergiant deposit formed at the same time. We argue that, in fact, two stages of mineralization were involved. Paired in situ U-Pb and trace element analyses of texturally distinct uraninite populations show that the supergiant size and highest-U-grade zones are the result of U addition at 0.7-0.5 Ga, at least one billion years after initial formation. This conclusion is supported by a remarkable clustering of thousands of radiogenic 207Pb/206Pb model ages of Cu sulfide grains at this time. Upgrading of the original ca. 1.59 Ga U deposit to its present size at 0.7-0.5 Ga may have resulted from perturbation of regional fluid flow triggered by global climatic (deglaciation) and tectonic (breakup of Rodinia) events. Previous U-Pb dating of fossils has had only limited success because of low uranium content and abundance of common Pb as well as element mobility during late diagenesis. We report the first accurate U-Pb dating of fossilized soft tissue from a Pliocene phosphatized bivalve mold using laser ablation-inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). The fossilized soft tissue yields a diagenetic U-Pb age of 3.16 ± 0.08 Ma, which is consistent with its late Pliocene stratigraphy and similar to the oldest U-Pb age measured on accompanying shark teeth. Phosphate extraclasts give a distinctly older age of 5.1 ± 1.7 Ma, indicating that they are likely detrital and may have furnished P, promoting phosphatization of the mold. The U-Pb ages reported here along with stratigraphic constraints suggest that diagenesis occurred shortly after the death of the bivalve and that the U-Pb system in the bivalve mold remained closed until the present. Shark teeth collected from the same horizon show variable resetting due to late diagenesis. Data were acquired as line scans in order to exploit the maximum Pb/U variation and were regressed as counts, rather than ratios, in three-dimensional space using a Bayesian statistical method.
