Herein, we describe the development of a paper-based device to detect nucleic acids of pathogens of interest in complex samples using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) by producing a colorimetric response visible to the human eye. To demonstrate the utility of this device in emerging public health emergencies, we developed and optimized our device to detect SARS-CoV-2 in human saliva without preprocessing. The resulting device was capable of detecting the virus within 60 min and had an analytical sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 100% with a limit of detection of 200 genomic copies/μL of patient saliva using image analysis. The device consists of a configurable number of reaction zones constructed of Grade 222 chromatography paper separated by 20 mil polystyrene spacers attached to a Melinex® backing via an ARclean® double-sided adhesive. The resulting device is easily configurable to detect multiple targets and has the potential to detect a variety of pathogens simply by changing the LAMP primer sets.

This chapter mainly focuses on the recent developments made in rapid detection of cancer cells using novel paper-based analytical devices (PADs). Due to their simplicity, portability and biocompatibility, PADs have gained great attention in recent years for rapid detection of biomarkers. Since cancer has become an increasing worldwide concern, there stands an imminent requirement for minimally invasive detection and monitoring techniques. The progress made in paper-based detection of cancer biomarkers has proven to hold great potential for the development of point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices for early detection of tumor cells. In this chapter, after an introduction on paper diagnosis, we will provide a brief explanation on the fabrication methods used for PADs. Then recently developed sensors based on colorimetric, fluorescence, chemiluminescence (CL), electrochemical, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques will be elaborated. In the end, current limitations and problems hindering the commercialization of paper-based sensors will be pointed out.

This chapter presents and discusses the most usual methodologies for colorimetric detection on paper-based analytical devices (PADs). State of the art associated with pioneering, popularity, physical aspect, surface modifications, instrumental and instrumental-free colorimetric measurements are carefully presented. Moreover, a side-by-side comparison among the most usual colorimetric detection modes on PADs was performed using a well-known complexometric reaction model. The pros and cons were discussed to show their advantages for chemical analysis.

This chapter describes the concept of paper space. Covered are the primary reasons for using paper space, how to get in/out of paper space, and how to set up title blocks (layouts), viewports and their properties, viewport scale assignments, controlling what is visible in viewports, setting up text and dim styles in viewports, and the annotative concept.

Paper-based microfluidic devices have undergone rapid development and offered a promising low-cost platform for disease diagnostics in poor-resource areas. Recently, paper-hybrid microfluidic devices have attracted much attention and been applied in various low-cost point-of-care testings, due to multiple merits derived from both paper and other substrates. This chapter summarizes the recent progress of low-cost paper and paper-hybrid microfluidic devices for rapid diagnostics of human diseases. The commonly used fabrication techniques are first introduced, and the applications of numerous paper and paper-hybrid microfluidic devices are then elaborated with an emphasis on rapid disease diagnostics in terms of the nature of biomolecules in three major categories, namely, protein-, gene-, and cell-based diagnostics. Both advantages and disadvantages of using these devices are discussed, followed by the perspectives for broad applications in low-cost diagnostics.

Background: Prognostic models combine several prognostic factors to provide an estimate of the likelihood (or risk) of future events in individual patients, conditional on their prognostic factor values. A fundamental part of evaluating prognostic models is undertaking studies to determine whether their predictive performance, such as calibration and discrimination, is reproduced across settings. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of studies evaluating prognostic models’ performance are a necessary step for selection of models for clinical practice and for testing the underlying assumption that their use will improve outcomes, including patient's reassurance and optimal future planning. Methods: In this paper, we highlight key concepts in evaluating the certainty of evidence regarding the calibration of prognostic models. Results and Conclusion: Four concepts are key to evaluating the certainty of evidence on prognostic models’ performance regarding calibration. The first concept is that the inference regarding calibration may take one of two forms: deciding whether one is rating certainty that a model's performance is satisfactory or, instead, unsatisfactory, in either case defining the threshold for satisfactory (or unsatisfactory) model performance. Second, inconsistency is the critical GRADE domain to deciding whether we are rating certainty in the model performance being satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Third, depending on whether one is rating certainty in satisfactory or unsatisfactory performance, different patterns of inconsistency of results across studies will inform ratings of certainty of evidence. Fourth, exploring the distribution of point estimates of observed to expected ratio across individual studies, and its determinants, will bear on the need for and direction of future research. © 2021

Over the past few years, what might not unreasonably be described as a true revolution has taken place in the field of machine vision, radically altering the way many things had previously been done and offering new and exciting opportunities for those able to quickly embrace and master the new techniques. Rapid developments in machine learning, largely enabled by faster GPU-equipped computing hardware, has facilitated an explosion of machine vision applications into hitherto extremely challenging or, in many cases, previously impossible to automate industrial tasks. Together with developments towards an internet of things and the availability of big data, these form key components of what many consider to be the fourth industrial revolution. This transformation has dramatically improved the efficacy of some existing machine vision activities, such as in manufacturing (e.g. inspection for quality control and quality assurance), security (e.g. facial biometrics) and in medicine (e.g. detecting cancers), while in other cases has opened up completely new areas of use, such as in agriculture and construction (as well as in the existing domains of manufacturing and medicine). Here we will explore the history and nature of this change, what underlies it, what enables it, and the impact it has had - the latter by reviewing several recent indicative applications described in the research literature. We will also consider the continuing role that traditional or classical machine vision might still play. Finally, the key future challenges and developing opportunities in machine vision will also be discussed.

The One Health concept that human, animal, plant, environmental, and ecosystem health are linked provides a framework for examining and addressing complex health challenges. This framework can be represented as a multi-dimensional matrix that can be used as a tool to identify upstream drivers of disease potential in a concise, systematic, and comprehensive way. The matrix can involve up to four dimensions depending on users' needs. This paper describes and illustrates how the matrix tool might be used to facilitate systems thinking, enabling the development of effective and equitable public policies. The multidimensional One Health matrix tool will be used to examine, as an example, global human and animal fecal wastes. The fecal wastes are analyzed at the microbial and population levels over a timeframe of years. Political, social, and economic factors are part of the matrix and will be examined as well. The One Health matrix tool illustrates how foodborne illnesses, food insecurity, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change are inter-related. Understanding these inter-relationships is essential to develop the public policies needed to achieve many of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

VIKOR is one of the well known Multiple Criteria Decision Aid methods, used frequently and considered to produce robust results. However, it seems that it is not immune to the rank reversal phenomenon. The latter is a well studied phenomenon that occurs sometimes in many such methods and is the cause of often severe criticism. This short paper provides such an example (and a counter-example) in the case of a fuzzy version of VIKOR.

Public transport has been identified as high risk as the corona-virus carrying droplets generated by the infected passengers could be distributed to other passengers. Therefore, predicting the patterns of droplet spreading in public transport environment is of primary importance. This paper puts forward a novel computational and artificial intelligence (AI) framework for fast prediction of the spread of droplets produced by a sneezing passenger in a bus. The formation of droplets of salvia is numerically modelled using a volume of fluid methodology applied to the mouth and lips of an infected person during the sneezing process. This is followed by a large eddy simulation of the resultant two phase flow in the vicinity of the person while the effects of droplet evaporation and ventilation in the bus are considered. The results are subsequently fed to an AI tool that employs deep learning to predict the distribution of droplets in the entire volume of the bus. This combined framework is two orders of magnitude faster than the pure computational approach. It is shown that the droplets with diameters less than 250 micrometers are most responsible for the transmission of the virus, as they can travel the entire length of the bus., Graphical Abstract ga1

The interest in and use of high-power ultrasound in food processing have been known for several years, especially to disrupt cells and disperse aggregated materials, for enzyme inactivation, and the induction of oxidation reactions, among others. In the General Assembly of the OIV in Geneva in 2019, the Resolution OENO 616-2019 was approved. In this resolution, the use of high-power ultrasound to stimulate the extraction of grape compounds during prefermentation maceration, after destemming and crushing, was accepted as an enological practice. The application of this technology opens a whole new scenario for improving and/or accelerating some winemaking processes. This technology has been especially used in red wine winemaking processes, but in this chapter, the different possibilities it presents for white wine elaboration will be covered and discussed.

Background: Operating schools safely under pandemic conditions is a widespread policy goal. We analyse the effectiveness of classroom cohorting, i.e., the decomposition of classrooms into smaller isolated units, in inhibiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in European secondary schools and compare different cohorting strategies. Methods: Using real-world network data on 12,291 adolescents collected in classrooms in England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden in 2010/2011, we apply agent-based simulations to compare the effect of forming cohorts randomly to network-based cohorting. Network-based cohorting attempts to allocate out-of-school contacts to the same cohort to prevent cross-cohort infection more effectively. We consider explicitly minimizing out-of-school cross-cohort contacts, approximating this information-heavy optimization strategy by chained nominations of contacts, and dividing classrooms by gender. We also compare the effect of instructing cohorts in-person every second week to daily but separate in-person instruction of both cohorts. Findings: We find that cohorting reduces the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in classrooms. Relative to random cohorting, network-based strategies further reduce infections and quarantines when transmission dynamics are strong. In particular, network-based cohorting inhibits superspreading in classrooms. Cohorting that explicitly minimizes cross-cohort contacts is most effective, but approximation based on chained nominations and classroom division by gender also outperform random cohorting. Every-second-week instruction in-person contains outbreaks more effectively than daily in-person instruction of both cohorts. Interpretation: Cohorting of school classes can curb SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks in the school context. Factoring in out-of-school contacts can achieve a more effective separation of cohorts. Network-based cohorting reduces the risk of outbreaks in schools and can prevent superspreading events. Funding: None.

Clinical studies with time to event endpoints typically report the median follow-up (i.e., censoring) time for the subjects in the trial, alongside the median time to event. The reason for this is to provide information about the opportunity for subjects in the study to experience the event of interest (Betensky, 2015 [1]). The median follow-up time is often calculated from the Kaplan-Meier estimate for time to censoring. In most clinical studies, the censoring time is a composite measure, defined as the minimum of time to drop-out from the study and time to administrative end of study. The time to drop-out component may or may not be observed; it is observed only if drop-out occurs before the event and the end of the study. However, the time to end of study is observed for each subject, as it is the time from entry to the study to the calendar date that is administratively set as the end of the study. It is known even for subjects who have the event prior to the end of the study. This decomposition of the censoring time into a time that is itself potentially censored and a time that is fully observed raises the interesting question of whether estimation of the censoring distribution could be improved through a decoupling of these times. We demonstrate in simulations that consideration of censoring in this way yields reduced variability under some circumstances and should be used in practice. We illustrate these concepts through application to a meningioma study.

Within the past few decades, the application of light scattering techniques to a broad range of scientific disciplines has increased significantly, especially in the field of analytical chemistry. The resulting interest in and use of light scattering methods suggests the need for an easily understood introduction and review of material for those new to the method as well as for current users in need of a refresher. In many respects, the theory and its applications may appear so overwhelming for many studying the field for the first time, that they rarely can spend the time just needed to understand the basic measurements and their interpretations. A variety of applications in analytical chemistry especially have resulted in a greater understanding of many of the macromolecular processes themselves from molar mass distributions, to the macromolecular interactions responsible for aggregation processes, to determinations of structure and function. Background Hereditary hearing loss (HHL) is the most common sensory deficit, which highly afflicts humans. With gene sequencing technology development, more variants will be identified and support genetic diagnoses, which is difficult for human experts to diagnose. This study aims to develop a machine learning-based genetic diagnosis model of HHL-related variants of GJB2, SLC26A4 and MT-RNR1. Methods This case-control study included 1898 subjects, among which 1354 were HHL patients and 544 were carriers. Risk assessment models were established based on variants at 144 sites in three genes related to HHL by building six machine learning (ML) models. We compared the ML models with the genetic risk score (GRS) and expert interpretation (EI) to verify the clinical performance. Findings Among the six ML models, the support vector machine (SVM) showed the best performance. For the prediction of HHL-related gene sites in subjects with variants, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) of the SVM model was 0.803 (0.680–0.814) in the 10-fold stratified cross-validation and 0.751 (0.635–0.779) in external validation. The predicted results were better than both EI and GRS. Furthermore, 11 sites were identified as the smallest feature set that can be accurately predicted. Interpretation The developed SVM model has great potential to be an efficient and effective tool for HHL prediction when high throughput sequencing data are available. To manage the risk of insurance companies, a reinsurance transaction is among the myriad risk management mechanisms the top ranked choice. In this paper, we study the design of optimal reinsurance contracts within a risk measure minimization framework and subject to the Vajda condition. The Vajda condition requires the reinsurer to take an increasing proportion of the loss when it increases and therefore imposes constraints on the indemnity function. The distortion-risk-measure-based objective function is very generic, and allows for, for example, an objective to minimize the risk-adjusted value of the insurer’s liability, and for heterogeneous beliefs regarding the loss distribution by the insurer and reinsurer. Under a mild condition, we propose a backward-forward optimization method that is based on a marginal indemnity function formulation. To show the applicability and simplicity of our strategy, we provide three concrete examples with the Value-at-Risk: one with the risk-adjusted value of the insurer’s liability, one with an objective function that follows from imposing Pareto optimality, and one with heterogeneous beliefs. We conclude this paper with an empirical application with Danish fire insurance losses and the Value-at-Risk and the Tail Value-at-Risk.

In order to improve the effect of intelligent sports prediction and analysis, this paper analyzes the traditional high-speed model and proposes a reliable sports action recognition algorithm on this basis. With this algorithm as the core algorithm, sports action recognition can be performed. The paper mainly constructs a standard database structure, inputs a reliable standardized movement model into the database structure, and compares the identified sports movement model with the standard movement model to judge the accuracy of the sports movement. Moreover, this paper uses statistical analysis to study sports training and sports competitions, and obtains prediction results through multi-factor analysis and comparison. In addition, this paper uses statistical methods to process experimental data to draw graphs and tables that can visually observe the results of sports predictive analysis. From the experimental analysis, it can be seen that the algorithm model constructed in this paper has a significant effect.

For multi-attribute decision-making problems with interval numbers whose attribute weights are completely unknown, it is difficult to compare the value of interval numbers. So this paper proposes a method based on TOPSIS and the weighted parameter to deal with it. Firstly, this paper transforms the interval number matrix into two exact number matrices which reduces sorting complexity. Secondly, a parameter is given when determining the weights with entropy weight in order to reflect all the information of the interval numbers. Then TOPSIS is used to determine the order of each scheme. In addition, the average value of the ranking number is used to reflect the actual situation better. Finally, the analysis of the car purchase case shows the proposed method is feasible and practical. And the comparative analysis with the other method based on practical application dataset demonstrates the proposed method is stable and effective.

Differential evolution (DE) is a popular evolutionary algorithm inspired by Darwin’s theory of evolution and has been studied extensively to solve different areas of optimisation and engineering applications since its introduction by Storn in 1997. This study aims to review the massive progress of DE in the research community by analysing the 192 articles published on this subject from 1997 to 2021, particularly studies in the past five years. The methodology used to search for relevant DE papers and an overview of the original DE are firstly explained. Recent advances in the modifications proposed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the original DE are reviewed by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of each published work, followed by the potential applications of these DE variants in solving different real-world engineering problems. In contrast to most existing DE review papers, additional analyses are performed in this survey by investigating the impacts of various parameter settings on given DE variants to identify their optimal values required for solving certain problem classes. The qualities of modifications incorporated into selected DE variants are also evaluated by measuring the performance gains achieved in terms of search accuracy and/or efficiency against the original DE. The additional surveys conducted in this study are anticipated to provide more insightful perspectives for both beginners and experts of DE research, enabling their better understanding about current research trends and new motivations to outline appropriate strategic planning for future development works.

In recent years, as the penetration rate of renewable energy has become higher and higher, the amount of power electronic equipment access has increased, and the power system has shown obvious “double high” characteristics, this puts forward higher requirements for the safe and stable operation of the power system. Based on the current background and research, this paper starts with the concept of resilient grid and studies the influence of the learning ability of resilient grid on the power system. First of all, this article analyzes the driving factors of learning ability from two perspectives of scientific and technological progress and policy orientation. Among them, scientific and technological progress includes internal driving and external driving, and policy orientation includes macro-level and micro-level; Secondly, this paper studies the influence of various factors on the restoration of the distribution network and the power market, and proves it through calculation examples; Finally, this paper summarizes and looks forward to the significance and role of learning driving factors in the construction of new power systems.

The paper deals with the performance checking of an optimally designed LCL-filter connected along the grid-side converter (GSC) in a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion system (WECS) in attenuating harmonics. A repetitive approach is required for designing the parameters of the LCL-filter. The reasons being the explicitness of design parameters and design requirements of the proposed filter like IEEE-519 Std. for harmonic current attenuation, maximum voltage difference allowed in between two sides of the filter to limit switching losses, and limit of reactive power compensation. The proposed filter is compared with the conventional LCL-filter. Based on the proposed method, a minimal inductance and optimal capacitance-based filter is obtained in this paper which is validated using a 2.2 kW DFIG based WECS. Comparative stability analysis of DFIG system with and without proposed filter is performed using small signal stability analysis. The system under study is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and OPAL-RT 4510, simultaneously. Simulation results validates the effective use of proposed filter design method into DFIG system in terms of harmonic attenuation, total harmonic distortion and reactive power compensation.

With the continuous use of various new radar systems and complex radar systems, the electromagnetic environment is extremely deteriorated. The traditional emitter recognition methods have been difficult to meet the requirements of recognition performance in the rapidly changing battlefield environment. To solve this problem, a radar electronic signal recognition algorithm based on wavelet transform and deep learning is proposed in this paper. Starting from the radar reconnaissance system, the causes of signal preprocessing are analyzed, and the methods of signal denoising, signal normalization, signal intra pulse modulation recognition, multipath signal detection and suppression are deeply studied. In particular, the denoising algorithm based on threshold wavelet transform is proposed, which significantly improves the reliability of the algorithm. Aiming at the individual feature extraction of emitter signal, the extraction methods of emitter signal time domain feature, frequency domain feature, fuzzy function slice feature and cyclic spectrum feature based on wavelet transform are studied and analyzed, which provides stable and reliable classification features for emitter signal recognition. According to the characteristics of radar emitter signal, an optimized convolution neural network is designed, and the feature fusion processing is carried out at the decision-making level, which greatly improves the recognition effect and enhances the robustness of the recognition system. Experiments on radar data show that the fusion recognition rate is higher than any single feature and has strong robustness. In addition, compared with the traditional SVM and elm networks, the CNN network proposed in this paper can extract detailed features more effectively and improve the recognition rate of electronic radar.

In order to build a smart campus teaching system with good teaching efficiency, this paper improves the traditional ZigBee algorithm and builds a smart campus teaching system based on ZigBee wireless sensors. Moreover, this paper improves the estimation algorithm of students' specific location and direction on campus, and analyzes the network structure of the smart teaching system based on the actual needs of smart teaching, and builds a three-tier teaching structure system. In addition, on the basis of demand analysis, this paper sets the system function modules, analyzes the data processing effect of the network nodes of this smart campus through experimental research, and evaluates the system teaching effect. Finally, this paper uses simulation technology to analyze 100 sets of data to evaluate the data processing effect of ZigBee network. Through the experimental research results, we can see that the smart campus teaching system constructed in this paper has good results.

This paper focuses on voltage source inverters used in new energy user power supply and energy storage power supply systems. If it is equipped with linear load, the power quality of output voltage can be easily guaranteed. If it is equipped with a nonlinear load, the system is affected by output impedance, and the output voltage is easy to be distorted. In this paper, the mechanism of output voltage distortion of inverter with a nonlinear load is studied. It is concluded that the distortion is caused by the voltage drop of nonlinear load current in the output impedance of the inverter. We proposed an embedded repetitive control compensator to improve the output voltage quality. In addition, we give out the Bode diagram parameters select method. The simulation results show that the proposed control strategy is feasible and effective.

The DC transformer based on the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) structure has the advantages of robust scalability, low output voltage harmonic content, easy realization of back-to-back connection, and high power transmission efficiency. It is widely used in DC distribution networks. However, traditional control methods hardly provide inertia for the DC distribution network, thereby reducing the stability of the distribution network when new energy output fluctuations, DC distribution network failures, or other disturbances occur. Aiming at the problem that the DC bus voltage is easily affected by power fluctuations, the paper proposes a virtual inertia control method applied to the DC transformer with MMC structure. Similar to the introduction of virtual synchronous generators in the AC distribution network to enhance the system inertia, the paper designs a control strategy for dynamically adjusting the virtual inertia with a virtual capacitor added, which is based on the traditional two-phase shift control. The paper also presents the calculation method of the virtual capacitance. When the power in the DC microgrid fluctuates significantly, the strategy can effectively enhance the inertia of the DC distribution network and suppress the voltage fluctuation of the DC bus. The paper finally establishes a DC distribution network model with distributed power sources in the PLECS simulation software, and verifies the effectiveness of the control strategy compared with the traditional strategy.

Distributed Power Flow Controller (DPFC) is a power flow control device based on power electronics technology, which can achieve balanced and optimized power flow distribution, limit overload of power flow section and suppress power oscillations through coordinated control of multiple subunits. This paper analyzes the protection measures of DPFC when the AC line fault occurs, and puts forward the control and protection strategy of DPFC, which makes DPFC have fault crossing ability and improves the reliability of DPFC. The rationality and engineering applicability of the strategy of DPFC proposed in this paper are verified by analyzing the instantaneous fault of AC line during the actual operation of Huzhou DPFC project.

This paper presents the PLC-Based system for controlling the SCR power module which is AC–DC converter proposes to linearity output voltage with trigger signal. The technique converted the trigger signal by arccosine function and analog module in the PLC. Converted signal from PLC system is fed to SCR power module instant the traditional signal. Proposed of this paper describes the PLC hardware configuration, compute/math and trigonometric functions with Studio 5000 software. In addition, the interfacing, parameters configuration, and monitoring are considered for testing. The technique with PLC-based, devices configuration and experimental results have been presented will be useful for electric power supply in the industry with more and more demand to apply the PLC system to develop the traditional industry to semi or automatic control in the industry.

With the continuous deepening of power market reforms, studying the interaction of multi-stakeholder in multi-microgrid (MMG) energy trading is of great significance to improve the economic performance of the distribution network. In order to analyze the economic optimization method of multiple stakeholders in the distributed energy system, this paper proposes a multi-stakeholder benefit optimization method based on Stackelberg game theory (SGT), and establishes a local market energy transaction model. The model is composed of external distribution network, leader-intermediary agent (IA) and follower-microgrids (MGs), and uses the master–slave game method to solve the optimization strategy. Under this mode, the profit of each stakeholder in MMG increased by 2.64%, 4.24%, 1.38% respectively. The case results show that based on the method in this paper, multi-stakeholder in MMG can improve economic performance and can increase the level of energy autonomy of MMG.

With the development of science and technology, the power source of the automobile industry has gradually changed from non-renewable energy sources such as petroleum to electric energy, a clean and renewable energy source. By the end of 2020, scientists have found that the global demand for batteries has greatly increased. The demand for power batteries has reached 50% of all battery demand, occupying half of the market. In addition, scientists also boldly predict that by 2025, China's consumption of batteries in the automobile industry will reach more than 100,000 tons per year. Faced with so much battery consumption, how to dispose of and recycle LiFePO4 used batteries has become the key to restricting the development of the industry. Failure to dispose of used batteries will not only hinder the development of the industry, but also cause serious pollution to the environment. The application of sensors today has been extended to various fields, and the emergence of satellite navigation and positioning technology is one of the driving forces to promote its development. However, the sensor cannot be directly applied to various environments. When in a complex environment, the obstruction of various objects in the environment will seriously affect the stability of the sensor. In order to ensure the normal operation of the sensor, positioning technology began to be applied to the sensor. The industrial production process of solid-phase regeneration and electrochemical performance of waste lithium iron phosphate materials discussed in this article is based on this perspective, through the use of computer vision positioning to reduce the impact of environmental factors on the accuracy of the sensor, thereby improving the quality of the battery. In order to match the image point of the waste lithium iron phosphate material with the space point, this paper creatively uses the image point and the point in the corresponding space field. In addition, the author also studied the camera's rear rendezvous method and proposed a new rear rendezvous method. In addition, in order to strengthen the detection of waste lithium iron phosphate materials, this paper strengthened the construction of the sensor hardware system and software system, and completed the upgrade of the waste lithium iron phosphate material detection system.

In this paper, a new approach to time series classification is proposed. It transforms the scalar time series into a two-dimensional space of amplitude (time series values) and a change of amplitude (increment). Subsequently, it uses this representation to plot the data. One figure is produced for each time series. In consequence, the time series classification problem is converted into the visual pattern recognition problem. This transformation allows applying a wide range of algorithms for standard pattern recognition – in this domain, there are more options to choose from than in the domain of time series classification. In this paper, we demonstrated the high effectiveness of the new method in a series of experiments on publicly available time series. We compare our results with several state-of-the-art approaches dedicated to time series classification. The new method is robust and stable. It works for time series of differing lengths and is easy to extend and alter. Even with a baseline variant presented in an empirical study in this paper, it achieves a satisfying classification accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed conversion of raw time series into images that are subjected to feature extraction opens the possibility to apply standard clustering algorithms.

A faulty situation occurred in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based systems can affect its functionality. It is challenging to guarantee the reliability of service utilization in a distributed, concurrent and dynamic composition of web services. This paper aims to present a fault detection approach of SOA using dependency analysis. Data and control dependencies are identified and a fault diagnosis approach based on these dependencies is proposed in this paper. The presented approach extends discrete state space techniques to simulate the concurrent and distributed behavior through Colored Petri Nets (CPNs) for the SOA-based systems in case of the faulty situation. Concrete translation from SOA based system to a CPN model is presented. Model-based technique is used and some heuristics are presented for dependency analysis and fault detection purpose. The experimental performance analysis shows the feasibility of our proposed approach.

International audience; This paper is a contribution to fasten integration of battery pack innovation in commercial Electric Vehicles (EV) through massive digitalization: a seamless process detailed for battery design, battery safety, and battery management. Selected results of studies carried out on the EV value chain from design to recycling steps are presented, highlighting the importance of seamless integration and holistic state of mind when designing EV. Association between experimental and numerical approaches for efficient innovative EV production is crucial to achieve easy commercialisation. Successful forecasting of aging and thermal runaway evolution from single cell failure at module level using such methods illustrates their great potential. Hardware key counterparts under development are also introduced and give an idea of future architecture of EV battery packs and overall improvement of EV energy efficiency. Finally, a flexible and easily modifiable solution for battery electric vehicle (BEV) that allows rapid and cost-effective integration of future innovation is presented. This paper globally illustrates key breakthroughs gained in the context of the collaborative research project named ‘DEMOBASE’, for DEsign and MOdelling for improved BAttery Safety and Efficiency successfully submitted for funding by the European Commission in response to a 2017 call dedicated to ‘Green Vehicles’ under the EU Horizon 2020 work programme “Smart, green and integrated transport”.

Ever since the first introduction of Artificial Intelligence into the field of hydrology, it has further generated immense interest in researching aspects for further improvements to hydrology. This can be seen in the rising number of related works published. This culminated further with the combination of pioneering optimization techniques. Who would have thought that the birds and the bees can offer advances in the mathematical sciences and so have the ants too? The ingenuity of humans is spelled out in the algorithms that mimic many natural activities, like pack hunting by the wolves! This review paper serves to broadcast more of the intriguing interest in newfound procedures in optimal forecasting. Reservoirs are the main and most efficient water storage facilities for managing uneven water distribution. However, due to the major global climate changes which affect rainfall trend and weather, it has been a necessity to find an alternative solution for effective conventional water balance. A multifunctional reservoir operation appears to require the operator to make wise decisions to achieve an optimal reservoir operation. One of the most important aspects of all this is the forecasting of streamflows. For this, Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be the best alternative solution; as in the past three decades, there has been a drastic increase in building and developing AI models for forecasting and modelling unstable patterns in various hydrological fields. Nevertheless, AI models are also required to be optimized in tandem to achieve the best result, leading thus to the desirous forming of hybrid models between a standalone AI model and optimization techniques. This comprehensive study categorizes machine learning into three main categories, together with the optimization techniques, and will next explore the various AI model used for different hydrology fields along with the most common optimization techniques. Summarization of findings under every section is provided. Some advantages and disadvantages found through literature reviews are summarized for ease of reference. Finally, future recommendations and overall conclusions drawn from the results of researchers are included. This current review focuses on papers from high-impact factor publications based on 10 years starting from (2009 to 2020).

In data mining, outlier detection is applied in different domains. It has very large applications such as energy consumption analysis, forecasting hurricanes in meteorological data, fraud and intrusion detection, event detection and system monitoring in sensor networks, etc. Most of existing outlier detection techniques depend on the properties of a particular type of data and can not deal with a large volume of data well, which mean that there is a necessity for improved methodologies and techniques to be applied to a large amount of data with different types in other application areas. In this paper, a parallel outlier detection technique is developed to detect the outliers in the sequential data. Although there are many types of outliers, this paper concentrates on the contextual anomalies. The proposed technique uses a graph approach to detect the outliers. It is very flexible, fast, and no labeled data is needed comparing to many previous approaches. The experimental results show the detected contextual outliers in the sequential data, as well as the efficient scaling up to handle the massive data by increasing the number of processors. The results prove that the parallelism of the proposed technique is very valuable.

Color medical images hold noteworthy impact in clinical conclusion and treatment. Medical image segmentation reduces the uncertainty by providing detailed information about the shape, size, or location characteristics. However, traditional methods suffer from low accuracy, high complexity, and are less robust. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes an efficient metaheuristic algorithm, exchange market algorithm (EMA) for multilevel thresholding (MLT) of distinct medical images. Optimal threshold is effectively obtained through the most promising objective functions such as Kapur, Otsu and minimum cross entropy (MCE) aided with EMA. The EMA involves exchange of shares among the investors in stable and unstable market situations to achieve profit. Exploration and exploitation are achieved by second and third groups of stable and unstable modes of EMA. Moreover, the execution time is reduced by the highly competent shareholders retaining their top rank without any changes in their shares. The efficacy of the proposed paper is evaluated on three distinct medical images at 4, 5, 6 and 7th threshold levels and compared with the recent algorithms such as Krill herd (KHA), Teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) and Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). Quantitative and qualitative validation by metrics such as computational time, Peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), Structural similarity index (SSIM) and Wilcoxon rank sum test affirm that the EMA is superior to other algorithms. On the other hand, Otsu based EMA method is found to be more accurate and robust for improved clinical decision making and diagnosis.

In sample surveys, when we need information regarding rare sensitive issues which people often do not prefer to share with others. In such situations this is also awkward for interviewers to ask the direct questions related to confidential and private matters of interviewees. An approach towards the open queries about sensitive issues generally results in the high non-response rates or misleading answers. The aim of this paper is to develop an effective randomized response model to overcome with these types of challenges arising due to sensitive nature of characteristic under study. In this paper we have proposed three-stage randomized response model for estimating mean number of individuals who possessed rare sensitive attribute which makes use of Poisson distribution. The properties of the proposed estimation procedures have been deeply examined when the parameter of a rare unrelated attribute is known as well as unknown. Privacy protection of respondents is also an equally important matter of concern. So measure of privacy protection for the proposed randomized response model has also been examined. Empirical studies are performed to support the theoretical results, which show the dominance of the proposed estimators over well-known contemporary estimators. From the findings of this study we may conclude that proposed randomized response model is rewarding in terms of percent relative efficiencies and privacy protection and may be recommended to survey practitioners for real life applications.

Nowadays, different types of dispatchable and non-dispatchable distributed energy resource (DER) units, combined heat and power (CHP) plants as well as heat only units are integrated into a micro-grid (MG) platform. These facilities can help MG operators to satisfy the required electricity and heat demands of controllable and non-controllable loads even with no power exchange between the external main grid and the MG. This paper introduces a network constrained optimal operation model based on an integrated active-reactive and heat powers scheduling in MG for both grid-connected and isolated modes. The DERs like fuel cell (FC) units, diesel generators (DGs) and micro turbines (MTs) are motivated to take part in providing reactive power to the MG based on a reactive power payment function. Meanwhile, the dependency of produced heat and active power by CHP units through feasible operating region as well as the dependency of produced active and reactive powers by DER units through capability curves are taken into account in the optimal economic dispatch of the MGs. The main goal of this paper is to find the optimal economic dispatch of active and reactive powers as well as heat energy for DER and CHP based micro-grids in which network constraints such as AC power flow limitations are taken into consideration. The proposed model is examined on a 33-bus test MG for grid-connected and isolated modes and the simulation results are presented to investigate and analyze the different features of the proposed method.

The number of civilian, commercial and military applications are dependant on accurate knowledge of bathymetry of coastal regions. Conventionally, hydrographic surveying methods are used for bathymetric surveys carried by ship-based acoustic systems, but needs high-cost resources. Space technology has provided a cost-effective alternate means for charting near shore and inaccessible waters. The optical satellite data have capabilities to offer alternate solution in near-shore region, which has been researched for past 50 years, using evolving algorithms to estimate Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB). However, there is no agreement on use of terms like approach, model, method and techniques, which have been used varyingly and interchangeably as per context of SDB research. This paper suggests a classification scheme for SDB algorithms which is also applicable to other Marine Remote Sensing studies. In this paper, based on literature available on SDB for the past five decades, an insight on SDB classification has been offered grounded in research philosophy. The SDB approaches, models, methods and techniques have been elaborated with chronological development, along with SDB studies based on them, their accuracy and errors in SDB retrieval. We have suggested a matrix of prerequisite satellite data, in-situ data resolution, methods and algorithms of SDB based on level of accuracy needs to be achieved, which will guide future researchers to select one as per their context of research.

Oil price forecasting is one of the most challenging issues since it is noisy, non-stationary, and chaotic. In this paper, we design a Bayesian Nonlinear Quantile method consisting of a Threshold Improved model and an Adaptive MCMC model to improve predicting performance. Specifically, the threshold improve model is introduced to solve the problems caused by the completely asymmetric distribution, and the Adaptive MCMC model is used to get the optimal threshold. Besides, the two-stage framework is applied to improve traditional methods' performance, including the Indirect GARCH model and Asymmetric Slope model. The experimental results show that our approach provides a promising alternative to oil price prediction, and the framework also improve the performance of the traditional methods. The contribution of this paper is to improve the accuracy of the oil price forecasting model, and the framework applies to other energy prices as well.

In today’s world, Solar Photovoltaic energy sources have accredited robustness and reliability in the context of generation, transmission, and distribution of power for the end-users and utility customers. The accurate parameters analysis of Solar PV modules is necessary for the proper assessment, simulation, and optimization of power from Solar PV systems. The main goal of this paper is to apply a suitable approach to identify unspecified parameters of the PV module and at the same time to minimize (%) relative error and computation time to get better-optimized parameters for modeling of PV module. This paper presents a hybrid of a mathematical and iterative approach to analyze the appropriate parameters of the Solar PV model. Here, Root finding algorithms have been applied to extract the optimal unknown parameters of the PV modules by MATLAB programming. These algorithms are demonstrated on three distinct types of PV modules (Thin film, Monocrystalline, and Multicrystalline type) at standard test conditions and nominal operating conditions. These algorithms provide high precision and consume minimal time with ease of implementation. Extraction of parameters and simulation of the model is performed for validation based on datasheets of distinct types of PV modules using MATLAB/ SIMULINK software. The extracted precise parameters give rise to output characteristics of PV modules under variable environmental and electrical conditions. Relative error analysis has been evaluated to distinguish between different techniques applied for parameter extraction of PV modules. The relative error (%) of the proposed techniques for parameters extraction of PV modules varies from −0.5% to ＋0.5%, which shows the supercilious characteristic of the proposed techniques. Future exploration headings concerning the optimization of power from the Solar PV system are suggested.

Smart Grid 2.0 is envisaged to automate the operations of the intelligent electricity grid. Blockchain and smart contracts are integrated to facilitate the transformation from DSO-centric operations to consumer-oriented, distributed electricity grid management. The envisaged smart grids, integrated with blockchain would provoke challenges, which would hinder the maximum utilization of Distribute Energy Resources (DERs). This comprehensive review aims at analyzing the applicability of blockchain technology in Smart Grid 2.0, which would facilitate a seamless decentralization process. Further, the paper elaborates the blockchain-based applications of future smart grid operations and the role of blockchain in each scenario. The paper further provides a concise analysis on the blockchain integration challenges, thereby ensure secure and scalable, decentralized operations of future, autonomous electricity networks.

Due to globalization and industrial development, the need of power is increasing day by day. In addition, due to the high demand for clean energy sources, the use of renewable systems has expanded in recent years. Wind systems can take advantage of the copious and free energy provided by the wind, which is a significant benefit. However, changing incident energy from renewables generate harmonics, which may result in poor system performance. The power quality has therefore become an important issue for both the power suppliers and consumers. Power electronic devices and nonlinear loads have been used frequently in industries hence introducing harmonic distortions in the industrial power distribution network. Harmonics have adverse effects on the power quality like degradation of power generation efficiency, higher operational costs, overheating of equipment, saturation of transformer, electromagnetic interference etc. In order to solve these problems, the implementation of suitable filtration techniques and the evaluation of efficiency with harmonic reduction are crucial. Since, utilities are always aiming to improve the power quality with minimum filtering units, this paper compares the performance of two available filter implementation plan, namely the shunt active power filter (SAPF) and the single tuned filter (STF) in a renewable penetrated industrial distribution network. Based on the outcome of the comparison, a genetic algorithm (GA) based approach is proposed in this paper to determine the optimum size and position of the minimum required filtering units that improves the network’s existing harmonic scenarios. Simulation results to validate the proposed methodology are presented. According to the results, the proposed method of incorporating filtering units significantly outperformed in lowering total harmonic distortion (THD) in an industrial power distribution network with a higher renewable penetration.
