Navigation aids can help people conduct daily wayfinding activities. However, because of cognitive limitations that can emerge with age, it is not clear how different navigation aids impact wayfinding behaviors and spatial memory in older adults. In Experiment 1, 66 older adults and 65 younger adults participated. They were asked to make turn decisions when the navigation aid was a map, a map plus self-updating (Global Positioning System [GPS]), or a text. After the wayfinding task, they completed two spatial memory tasks recalling scenes and drawing the routes. Results showed that younger adults outperformed older adults on most outcome measures. The text and the GPS conditions benefited older adults' wayfinding behaviors more than the map condition, as indicated by route decision accuracies and reaction times. However, the map condition was associated with better route memory than the text condition. Experiment 2 aimed to replicate the results using more complex environments. Sixty-three older adults and 66 younger adults participated. The advantage of the text over the map conditions was again found in wayfinding behaviors for older adults. However, no difference was found between the map and the text conditions in route memory. No difference was found between the GPS and the map conditions in any outcome measures. Overall, our results showed the relative strengths and weaknesses of different navigation aids and the interactive effects between the type of navigation aid, age, outcome measure, and environmental complexity. Semantic similarity between stimuli can lead to false memories and can also potentially cause retroactive interference (RI) for veridical memories. Here, participants first learned spatial locations for "critical" words that reliably produce false memories in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. Next, participants centrally viewed words that were semantically associated with half of the critical words. Finally, participants retrieved the spatial locations for the critical words. We found that spatial memory was worse for critical words whose semantic associates were shown versus not shown, suggesting that semantic relatedness caused RI. This effect occurred in three experiments when the interfering information was presented shortly before the spatial test but not when there was a 1-hour delay before the test, nor when the order of the spatial learning and associate learning phases were reversed. These findings suggest that RI can occur solely via semantic associates when all relevant responses and no distracting responses were available at retrieval. We consider these findings to be an example of cue overload, whereby cues can be overloaded indirectly via semantic associates, and to support the importance of both semantic similarity and temporal context in RI. Cholinergic neurotransmission within the hippocampus has long been suggested to play a pivotal role in memory processing, based partly on the assumption that the well-established amnestic effects of systemic cholinergic receptor blockade are mediated by the hippocampus. However, experimental evidence suggests that this may not be the case; a growing number of studies employing selective lesion or pharmacological approaches to disrupt cholinergic transmission within the hippocampus have failed to find robust deficits in either learning or memory, primarily in rodent models. Here, we evaluated the contribution of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR)- and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR)-mediated neurotransmission in the hippocampus of rhesus macaques for performance in a hippocampal-dependent spatial memory task, the Hamilton Search Task. We infused the nAChR antagonist, mecamylamine, or the mAChR antagonist, scopolamine, and evaluated performance on a within-subject basis. Neither treatment impaired performance under any task conditions. These data demonstrate that the hippocampus is not the critical site for the mnemonic actions of cholinergic neurotransmission, at least in the context of spatial memory. Spatial memory is important for supporting the successful completion of everyday activities and is a particularly vulnerable domain in late life. Grouping items together in memory, or chunking, can improve spatial memory performance. In memory for desktop scale spaces and well-learned large-scale environments, error patterns suggest that information is chunked in memory. However, the chunking mechanisms involved in learning new large-scale, navigable environments are poorly understood. In five experiments, two of which included young and older adult samples, participants watched movies depicting routes through building-sized environments while attempting to remember the locations of cued objects. We tested memory for the cued objects with virtual pointing, distance estimation, and map drawing tasks after participants viewed each route. Patterns of error failed to show consistent evidence of chunking in spatial memory across all experiments. One possibility is that chunking in spatial memory relies on visual perceptual grouping mechanisms that are not in play during encoding of large-scale spaces encountered through extended route experiences that do not afford concurrent viewing of target locations. It is a prevailing theoretical claim that path integration is the primary means of developing global spatial representations. However, this claim is at odds with reported difficulty to develop global spatial representations of a multiscale environment using path integration. The current study tested a new hypothesis that locally similar but globally misaligned rooms interfere with path integration. In an immersive virtual environment, participants learned objects' locations in one room and then physically walked, while being blindfolded, to a neighboring room for testing. These rooms were rectangular but globally misaligned. Adopting different actual perspectives in the testing room, the participants judged relative directions (JRDs) from the imagined perspectives in the learning room. The imagined and actual perspectives were aligned or misaligned according to either local room structures or global cardinal directions. Prior to JRDs, participants did not conduct other tasks (Experiment 1) or judged relative global headings of the two rooms to activate global representations while seeing the testing room (Experiment 2) or in darkness (Experiment 3). Participants performed better at locally aligned than misaligned imagined perspectives in all experiments. Better performances for globally aligned imagined perspectives appeared only in Experiment 3. These results suggest that structurally similar but misaligned rooms interfered with updating global heading by path integration, and this interference occurred during but not after the activation of global representations. These findings help to settle the inconsistency between the theoretical claims and empirical evidence of the importance of path integration in developing global spatial memories. This study investigated to what extent people can develop global spatial representations of a multiroom environment through one-shot physical walking between rooms. In Experiment 1, the participants learned objects' locations in one room of an immersive virtual environment. They were blindfolded and led to walk to a testing position either within the same room (within-boundary) or in an adjacent novel room (across-boundary). They conducted judgments of relative direction (JRD) based on the remembered locations of objects. The participants' actual perspectives and imagined perspectives of JRD trials were manipulated to be aligned or misaligned (i.e., faced the same or opposite cardinal directions). The results showed better JRD performances for the aligned perspectives than the misaligned perspectives in the across-boundary condition; this global sensorimotor alignment effect was comparable with the effect in the within-boundary condition. Experiments 2-6 further examined global sensorimotor alignment effects after across-boundary walking. Experiments 2-3 manipulated factors related to encoding global relations (i.e., explicit instructions to attend to walking and keep track of spatial relations, and visual cues for navigational affordance to another space). Experiments 4-6 manipulated factors related to retrieving global relations in JRD (i.e., learning orientation as one imagined perspective, learning position and orientation as the imagined viewpoint, and the number of imagined perspectives). The results showed robust global sensorimotor alignment effects in all experiments, indicating that the participants updated actual headings relative to remembered objects in the other room. We investigated the role of working memory in symbolic and spatial algebra and related tasks across five experiments. Each experiment combined a processing task (expression evaluation, arithmetic, coordinate plane, geometry, or mental rotation) with verbal and spatial memory loads in a dual-task design. Spatial memory was compromised in the presence of more difficult processing tasks, and verbal memory was only compromised in the presence of algebraic tasks. The latter was related to the demands of retaining quantities associated with variables in verbal memory. We suggest that both verbal and spatial working memory retention engage domain-general attention, but that their maintenance mechanisms differ. Verbal memory has attention-based and rehearsal-based mechanisms, and thus sustaining verbal information over a short period is less attention-demanding than holding spatial information. We suggest that effects of a memory load on processing (e.g., x = 6) depend on whether use of maintenance strategies are possible for the specific memory load while carrying out processing. In all, our results indicate that algebraic tasks use domain-general attention and include verbal processing of algebraic variables (i.e., information conveyed in x, y). Selenium is an essential trace element that is delivered to the brain by the selenium transport protein selenoprotein P (SEPP1), primarily by binding to its receptor low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 8 (LRP8), also known as apolipoprotein E receptor 2 (ApoER2), at the blood-brain barrier. Selenium transport is required for several important brain functions, with transgenic deletion of either Sepp1 or Lrp8 resulting in severe neurological dysfunction and death in mice fed a selenium-deficient diet. Previous studies have reported that although feeding a standard chow diet can prevent these severe deficits, some motor coordination and cognitive dysfunction remain. Importantly, no single study has directly compared the motor and cognitive performance of the Sepp1 and Lrp8 knockout (KO) lines. Here, we report the results of a comprehensive parallel analysis of the motor and spatial learning and memory function of Sepp1 and Lrp8 knockout mice fed a standard mouse chow diet. Our results revealed that Sepp1 knockout mice raised on a selenium-replete diet displayed motor and cognitive function that was indistinguishable from their wild-type littermates. In contrast, we found that although Lrp8 -knockout mice fed a selenium-replete diet had normal motor function, their spatial learning and memory showed subtle deficits. We also found that the deficit in baseline adult hippocampal neurogenesis exhibited by Lrp8 -deficit mice could not be rescued by dietary selenium supplementation. Objective: This study investigates how spatial working memory skills, and the processing and retrieval of distal auditory spatial information are influenced by visual experience., Method: We developed an experimental paradigm using an acoustic simulation. The performance of congenitally blind and sighted participants ( n = 9 per group) was compared when recalling sequences of spatialised auditory items in the same or reverse order of presentation. Two experimental conditions based on stimuli features were tested: non-semantic and semantic., Results: Blind participants had a shorter memory span in the backward than the forward order of presentation. In contrast, sighted participants did not, revealing that blindness affects spatial information processing with greater executive source involvement. Furthermore, we found that blind subjects performed worse overall than the sighted group and that the semantic information significantly improved the performance, regardless of the experimental group and the sequences' order of presentation., Conclusions: Lack of early visual experience affects the ability to encode the surrounding space. Congenital blindness influences the processing and retrieval of spatial auditory items, suggesting that visual experience plays a pivotal role in calibrating spatial memory abilities using the remaining sensory modalities. Short assessments of spatial working memory (SWM) in dogs are becoming popular evaluations of canine aging and individual differences. In a typical SWM task, an experimenter hides a reward inside of a bucket at a specific stimulus position while the dog watches. Then, following a varying delay interval, the dog is released to choose a bucket. The longest delay at which the dog can successfully choose the bucket containing the reward is considered to reflect the dog's SWM duration. Although past studies were informative, the tasks often lacked a valid measure of SWM due to dogs' ability to use nonmnemonic strategies, such as body orientation or sustained attention, to successfully solve these tasks without relying on working memory mechanisms. Therefore, we designed the first study to assess the internal validity of these tasks by directly comparing dogs' performance on two experimental conditions. We found that dogs performed worse in a control condition in which nonmnemonic strategies were eliminated compared with a typical SWM task condition. In addition, our results indicate a strong relationship between the percentage of delay time that a dog spends orienting its head or body to the correct bucket and performance in a typical SWM task. These findings were the first to show a difference in SWM performance when dogs' use of nonmnemonic strategies was controlled and stress the importance of considering the internal validity of these tasks if used to examine SWM in future work. Improving cognitive health for older adults requires understanding the neurobiology of age-related cognitive decline and the mechanisms underlying preserved cognition in old age. During spatial learning tasks, aged humans and rodents shift navigation preferences in favor of a stimulus-response learning strategy. This has been hypothesized to result from competitive interactions of the caudate nucleus/dorsal striatum (DS) memory system with the hippocampus (HPC)-dependent spatial/allocentric memory system. In support of this hypothesis, a recent study reported that inactivation of the DS in aged rodents rescued HPC-dependent spatial learning on a T-maze (Gardner, Gold, & Korol, 2020). Currently, it is unclear whether a shift from HPC-dependent to DS-dependent behavior also contributes to age-related cognitive decline outside of spatial learning and memory. To test the hypothesis that inactivation of the DS can restore age-related cognitive function outside of spatial behavior, the present study bilaterally inactivated the DS of young ( n = 8) and aged ( n = 7) rats during visuospatial paired associates learning (PAL). This study found that inactivation of the DS did not alter PAL performance in young or aged rats, but did alter a positive control, DS-dependent spatial navigation task. This observation suggests that elevated DS activity does not play a role in the decline of HPC-dependent PAL performance in aged male rats. Given the persistent tendencies of aged rodents toward DS-dependent learning, it will be worthwhile to explore further the coordination dynamics between the HPC and DS that may contribute to age-related cognitive decline. While our perceptual experience seems to unfold continuously over time, episodic memory preserves distinct events for storage and recollection. Previous work shows that stability in encoding context serves to temporally bind individual items into sequential composite events. This phenomenon has been almost exclusively studied using visual and spatial memory paradigms. Here we adapt these paradigms to test the role of speaker regularity for event segmentation of complex auditory information. The results of our auditory paradigm replicate the findings in other sensory modalities-finding greater within-event temporal memory for items within speaker-bound events and greater source memory for items at speaker or event transitions. The task we use significantly extends the ecological validity of past paradigms by allowing participants to encode the stimuli without any suggestions on the part of the experimenter. This unique property of our design reveals that, while memory performance is strongly dependent on self-reported mnemonic strategy, behavioral effects associated with event segmentation are robust to changes in mnemonic strategy. Finally, we consider the effect of serial position on segmentation effects during encoding and present a modeling approach to estimate the independent contribution of event segmentation. These findings provide several lines of evidence suggesting that contextual stability in perceptual features drives segmentation during word listening and supports a modality-independent role for mechanisms involved in event segmentation. People's expectations help them make judgments about the world. In the area of spatial memory, the interaction of existing knowledge with incoming information is best illustrated in the category effect, a bias in positioning a target toward the prototypical location of its region (Huttenlocher et al., 1991). According to Bayesian principles, these biased judgments are weighted averages of a target's metric code (incoming data) and spatial categorical code (prior expectation). While previous research in the category effect generally focused on presence and reliability of different sources of information, we examined a scenario in which prior expectation is violated. Specifically, we investigated the role of prior expectations in location memory when these conflict with visual perception. We found that people favored their previous knowledge about where a target ought to be over the visual data on the actual target location. Hence, our work contributes to the literature by demonstrating the dominance of prior expectations over incongruent visual cues, and the data extend the context effect to spatial memory. The ability to remember sequences of events is fundamental to episodic memory. While rodent studies have examined sex and estrous cycle in episodic-like spatial memory tasks, little is known about these biological variables in memory for sequences of events that depend on representations of temporal context. We investigated the role of sex and estrous cycle in rats during training and testing stages of a cross-species validated sequence memory task (Jayachandran et al., 2019). Rats were trained on a two four-odor sequence memory task delivered on opposite ends of a linear track. Training occurred in six successive stages starting with learning to poke in a nose-port for ≥ 1.2 s; eventually demonstrating sequence memory by holding their nose in the port ≥ 1 s for in-sequence odors and < 1 s for out-of-sequence odors. Performance was analyzed across sex and estrous cycle (proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus), the latter being determined by cellular composition of a daily vaginal lavage. We found no evidence of sex differences in asymptotic sequence memory performance, similar to humans performing an analogous task (Reeders et al., 2021). Likewise, no differences in sequence memory performance were found across the estrous cycle. Some caveats are that males acquired out-of-sequence trials faster during training with a 3-odor sequence, but this apparent advantage did not carry over to the 4-odor sequence. Additionally, males had shorter poke times overall which seem consistent with a decreased overall response inhibition because they occurred regardless of sequence demands. Valued-based decision-making has been studied for decades in myriad topics such as consumer spending and gambling, but very rarely in spatial navigation despite the link between the two being highly relevant to survival. Furthermore, how people integrate episodic memories, and what factors are related to the extent of memory integration in value-based decision-making, remain largely unknown. In the current study, participants learned locations of various objects in a virtual environment and then decided whether to reach goal objects from familiar starting locations or unpredictable ones, with different penalties associated with each option. We developed computational models to test whether, when given an object to find, participants' starting location decisions reflected their past performance specific to that goal (Target-specific model) or integrated memory from performance with all goals in the environment (Target-common model). Because participants' wayfinding performance improved throughout the experiment, we were able to examine what factors related to the generalization of past experience. We found that most participants' decisions were better fit by the Target-common model, and for the people whose decisions were better fit by the Target-common model this integrative tendency may be tied to their concurrently greater performance variability with individual targets. Moreover, greater success on our task was predicted by an interaction between the ability to estimate probabilities relevant to decision-making and self-report general task ability. Collectively, our results show how related navigational episodic memories can be reflected in decision-making, and uncover individual differences contributing to such processes. Theories of memory consolidation suggest that initially rich, vivid memories become more gist-like over time. However, it is unclear whether gist-like representations reflect a loss of detail through degradation or the blending of experiences into statistical averages, and whether the strength of these representations increases, decreases, or remains stable over time. We report three behavioral experiments that address these questions by examining distributional learning during spatial navigation. In Experiment 1, human subjects navigated a virtual maze to find hidden objects with locations varying according to spatial distributions. After 15 minutes, 1 day, 7 days, or 28 days, we tested their navigation performance and explicit memory. In Experiment 2, we created spatial distributions with no object at their mean locations, thereby disentangling learned object exemplars from statistical averages. In Experiment 3, we created only a single, bimodal distribution to avoid possible confusion between distributions and administered tests after 15 minutes or 28 days. Across all experiments, and for both navigation and explicit tests, representations of the spatial distributions were present soon after exposure, but then receded over time. These findings suggest gist-like representations do not improve over time, helping to clarify the temporal dynamics of consolidation in human learning and memory. The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is an optimization problem in which the goal is to find the shortest possible route that passes through each of a set of points in space. The TSP is of interest not only in the fields of mathematics, computer science, and engineering, but also in cognitive and behavioral research to study problem-solving and spatial navigation. Humans are able to complete even complex TSPs with a high degree of efficiency, and distance minimization in TSP analogs has been observed in a variety of nonhuman species as well. Tasks based on the TSP also have the potential for translational research on cognitive and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The current experiment was designed to examine the effects of target number on TSP performance in rats. After pretraining, rats were tested once on each of several target configurations, and their travel routes were recorded. We examined the routes for general efficiency, as well as evidence for strategy use including the nearest neighbor (NN) strategy and crossing avoidance. Our results indicate that latency and route length increase in proportion to the number of targets. Rats also showed a strong tendency to avoid path crossing, and to select NN targets, which strengthened with increasing target numbers. Taken together, our results indicate that travel efficiency decreases linearly in relation to the target number rather than the number of possible routes, which grows factorially with a target number. Recipients of this award may not have held a doctoral degree for more than nine years. For her outstanding contributions to the understanding of the mind’s origins with the aim of elucidating the unique aspects of human cognition and the evolutionary processes that generate complex thought. Alexandra Rosati’s approach is unparalleled due to the range of species she compares, and her innovation of novel experimental measures to study animal cognition. Her work has shown that species with different natural histories vary systematically in their cognitive capacities, including decision-making, spatial memory, and social cognition. Preschoolers' repeating patterning knowledge is predictive of their concurrent and later math and numeracy knowledge, but strong experimental evidence is needed to determine if these relations are causal. The purpose of the current study was to examine the causal effects of repeating patterning and numeracy tutoring on repeating patterning, numeracy, and general mathematics knowledge in the year before kindergarten (i.e., pre-K). Children in pre-K (N = 211) were randomly assigned to receive five sessions of researcher-delivered tutoring (a) on repeating patterns and numeracy or (b) on numeracy (and literacy as an active control), or received no tutoring and business as usual classroom instruction (control). Children who received tutoring in repeating patterning and numeracy improved in their repeating patterning knowledge the most. However, children's general math and numeracy knowledge improved similarly across conditions, and a specific aspect of numeracy emphasized during the tutoring did not improve. Children's repeating patterning knowledge is malleable, but this initial attempt to demonstrate causal links between repeating patterning and math knowledge was not successful. Results parallel mixed success in research training other skills, such as working memory or spatial skills, for improving mathematics knowledge. Findings are discussed in terms of the relations between patterning, numeracy, and general math knowledge in preschoolers. Educational Impact and Implications Statement: We know that preschool children with better repeating patterning knowledge (i.e., understanding predictable sequences with a part that repeats, like objects arranged ABABAB) also tend to do better on math and numeracy tasks. How can we improve preschool children's patterning knowledge, and does teaching preschoolers patterning along with numbers improve their math knowledge? Our five tutoring sessions improved children's patterning knowledge, but did not improve their math knowledge. The patterning instruction was designed to improve children's knowledge of and ability to duplicate, extend, and abstract (i.e., duplication with different materials) repeating patterns, and identify the unit of repeat in those patterns. Although it was not designed to be used for classroom instruction, key features of our tutoring protocol can be incorporated into preschool teachers' patterning instruction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social isolation can have long-term effects on brain development and behavior and increases the risk of developing clinical conditions, including anxiety disorders. One modulator of the stress response is gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter synthesized by glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). This study examined sex differences in behavior and GAD expression following prolonged social isolation beginning in adolescence in Long Evans rats. Males and females were equally divided into group-housed (GH) and socially isolated conditions on Postnatal Day 28 ( n = 8 per group). Beginning 5 weeks later, tests were conducted for anxietylike behaviors (open-field test and elevated plus maze), social interactions (sociability test), and spatial memory (novel object location). Sex differences in behavior were observed, with GH females showing fewer anxietylike behaviors in the open-field test and elevated plus maze and spending more time with objects (sociability task) compared to GH males. Isolation had no effect on males but increased anxiety and reduced neophilic measures in females, removing sex differences. On the sociability task, all groups spent more time with novel rats compared to objects, suggesting social interest was retained after isolation. In the hippocampus, isolation reduced GAD in both sexes, and sex differences were seen (F > M). However, no group differences in behavior were observed in the hippocampal-dependent novel object location task. Our findings suggest that prolonged social isolation beginning in adolescence is anxiogenic for female Long Evans rats. Furthermore, sex and housing impact hippocampal GABA-ergic activity, which may have important implications in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Behavioral flexibility is an indispensable cognitive ability that allows the adjustment of behavioral responses to different situations, while resilience refers to the capability to deal effectively with stress. On one hand, standard laboratory housing provides impoverished cognitive, sensory, and physical stimulation compared to the conditions found in nature. Conversely, enriched and naturalistic housing conditions offer a broadening in the behavioral repertoire that can be depicted by the animals in their home cages, in addition to enabling a better management of possible stressors. Here, we investigated the effects of environmental enrichment and naturalistic housing compared to the standard laboratory housing on different behavioral tasks, including Morris water maze, open field, object location, and fear conditioning. This allowed us to evaluate how different housing conditions modulate behavioral flexibility and resilience to stress, in addition to spatial memory, in adult male rats.
