Prevention efforts are critical to avoid the negative consequences of substance use in adolescents. This study aimed to examine national trends and sociodemographic differences in adolescents' participation in school-based substance use prevention (SUP) education, community-based SUP programs, as well as family conversations about substance use. Publicly available data for adolescents aged 12–17 from the annual cross-sectional surveys of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2011–2019 were analyzed. Across the survey years, up to 74.9%, 12.2%, and 58.1% of adolescents reported having participated in school-based SUP education, community-based SUP programs, and family conversations about the danger of substance use in the past-year, respectively. From 2011 to 2019, statistically significant decreases were observed in adolescents' participation in school-based SUP education (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96, 0.98, p < 0.001) and community-based SUP programs (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97, 0.99, p < 0.001). Meanwhile, no significant changes were observed in adolescents' participation in family conversations about the dangers of substance use. Overall, lower levels of participation in school-based and community-based SUP programs were found in adolescents aged 16–17. Adolescents living in rural areas showed lower levels of participation in school-based SUP programs and family conversations about SUP. Racial/ethnic minority adolescents overall were less likely to participate in conversations with parents about SUP than Whites. Further development and implementation of developmentally appropriate, gender-specific, culturally sensitive, and contextually informed SUP programs at school, community, and family levels are needed. • A decreasing number of US adolescents participated in school-and community-based substance use prevention programs from 2011 to 2019. • No significant changes were found in adolescent involvement in family conversations about substance use over time. • Older adolescents aged 16 to 17 tended to have lower levels of participation in both school-based and community-based substance use prevention programs. • Adolescents of racial/ethnic minority groups were less likely to participate in family conversations about substance use than Whites. • Epilepsy remains one of the least understood diseases and patients with epilepsy suffer negative attitudes and stigma. • Educational programs are the most effective methods to improve knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy. • A community-based epilepsy awareness program increased knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy. Little interventional studies were conducted to improve knowledge, improve attitude, and eliminate stigma against patients with epilepsy. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a community-based epilepsy awareness program (CBEAP) on knowledge, attitude, and stigma against patients with epilepsy among the Palestinian general public. This interventional study used a pre-post design. Knowledge and attitudes were assessed using a reliable and internally consistent questionnaire before and 1 month after receiving a CBEAP. Knowledge was assessed using a 16-item and attitudes were assessed using 13 items. A total of 150 participants completed the questionnaire before the CBEAP. Of those, 136 (90.7 %) completed the CBEAP, and 129 (86.0 %) completed the questionnaire 1 month after receiving the CBEAP. The CBEAP significantly (p-value < 0.05) increased knowledge about the nature of epilepsy and seizures, triggers and treatment options, and patients with epilepsy. Similarly, the CBEAP significantly (p-value < 0.001) improved the attitudes of the participants toward epilepsy or having epilepsy, patients with epilepsy, relationships with patients with epilepsy, and working or staying with patients with epilepsy. Greater changes in knowledge and attitude scores were predicted by younger age and having a close friend or family member with epilepsy. The CBEAP developed and implemented in this interventional study significantly increased the knowledge of the participants about epilepsy and improved their attitudes toward epilepsy and patients with epilepsy. • A knowledge-based education program for patients with epilepsy improved knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy. • Improvements in knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy were maintained after six months of our education. • The improvement in attitudes toward epilepsy was maintained after six months in the non-depressed group but not in the depressed group. To investigate the effects of an original education program on patients with epilepsy (PWE). The effects on knowledge about epilepsy, attitude to epilepsy, depression scales, and quality of life were investigated. Thirty-five PWE participated in a lecture-style educational program using an original knowledge-oriented textbook. All patients were administered a total of four rating scales: the Knowledge about Epilepsy Scale (KES), the Attitude toward Epilepsy Scale (AES), and the Japanese version of the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31-P), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The KES and AES of patients (pKES and pAES) were compared to those of medical students (St) and residents (Rd). After education, pKES improved and showed significant differences among pre-and post-education and six months later. Before education, pKES was inferior to St and Rd. However, after education, pKES changed and became superior to St and Rd. Six months later, the advantage was lost, but not significantly. PAES also improved after education, with significant differences before, after, and six months later after education. PAES was statistically inferior to St and Rd before education, but the difference disappeared after education, and the effect persisted after six months. The non-depressed (BDI < 20) and depressed groups (BDI ≧ 20) improved in the KES after education. About the AES, the non-depressive group has a statistical tendency, but not the depressive group. At six months, the depressed group's AES is significantly lower than the non-depressed group. While correct knowledge about epilepsy can improve attitudes and perceptions of epilepsy in PWE, special measures are needed for PWE with depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preventing frailty is crucial in aging societies. We examined the effectiveness of a community-based frailty-prevention program for delaying the onset of functional disability among community-dwelling older adults. From 2014 to 2019, 48 community-based frailty prevention classes (FPC, 60 min/session, once a week), comprising resistance exercise and nutritional or psychosocial programs, were established in Yabu City, Japan. We conducted a baseline survey in 2012 and followed up with participants for up to 6.8 years (4.8 years from establishing the first FPC). We analyzed data from 3350 older people. The primary and secondary outcomes were the onset of functional disability and cause-specific functional disability (including dementia and cardiovascular and orthopedic diseases), respectively. In addition to crude Cox proportional hazard regression, inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and propensity score matching (PSM; 918 nonparticipants and 459 participants) were used to adjust for confounders. Participants were more likely to be female and have a healthy lifestyle than nonparticipants. During the follow-up, 690 individuals developed a functional disability. The hazard ratio of incident functional disability in the participants was significantly lower than that in nonparticipants in the IPTW (hazard ratio 0.53, 95% confidential interval 0.38–0.75) and PSM (0.52, 0.37–0.71) analyses. In age-stratified analysis, significant associations were observed only in the ≥75-year-old subgroup. In a cause-specific analysis, participation significantly and consistently reduced incident functional disability caused by dementia (IPTW 0.47, 0.25–0.86; PSM 0.45, 0.25–0.83). The current COVID-19 pandemic and the likelihood of future viral pandemics demonstrate a need for strategic prevention campaigns that integrate biomedical, structural, and behavioral interventions within larger scale comprehensive public health initiatives. In Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention, community-based efforts have resulted in reductions in transmission rates, increases in testing, increases in biomedical prevention uptake, and increased engagement in secondary and tertiary prevention efforts. In this paper, we review three community-based strategies (health communication, accessible screening, and accessible prevention resources) that have demonstrated effectiveness in HIV prevention and offer recommendations for utilizing these strategies in the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, health communication strategies have positively influenced HIV testing behavior, sex communication, and condom use among HIV negative individuals and treatment initiation, treatment adherence, and retention in care among people living with HIV. In addition, studies have shown that improving accessibility of HIV screening and prevention resources in community venues such as schools, pharmacies, mobile-testing sites, churches, hair salons, and bars is useful for increasing the uptake of HIV testing, especially among disproportionately affected populations and those deemed hard to reach. Despite differences in modes of transmission, it is plausible that a synergistic multilevel response with emphasis on community-based efforts could lead to similar outcomes for the current COVID-19 pandemic and future viral pandemics. Community-based prevention strategies offer an opportunity to integrate, and bolster disconnected and siloed initiatives that achieve limited impacts independently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) remains a global public health concern with multiple outbreaks over the last five years. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the current state of knowledge on awareness, education, and community mobilization programs on EVD prevention. A comprehensive search strategy was executed in October 2021 across eight databases (APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, Global Health, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science). According to the PRISMA flow diagram, out of the 4815 studies generated by the search, 33 were retained for extraction and were included in this scoping review. Findings revealed that cultural practices that increased the risk of Ebola transmission remain very prevalent, even educational and awareness campaigns. Levels of Ebola-related knowledge by community members varied widely. A large proportion of the Ebola-affected populations were not aware of modes of transmission and half were unaware of signs and symptoms. Interventions with deep community mobilization, collaboration and engagement were effective in changing cultural practices, and reducing rates of infection. Interventions in the health sector helped increase willingness to practice preventive methods and the maintenance of social distancing and patient handwashing. A majority of the population members received their information about EVD from the community and mass media (in most instances, through broadcasting stations). Community interventions with a collaborative approach are effective to prevent EVD. It is needed to build trust between communities and health care, but also to use local resources and cultural factors combined with the use of technologies of information to prevent EVD.
