Plasma wakefields can, therefore, strongly accelerate charged particles and offer the opportunity to reach higher particle energies with smaller and hence more widely available accelerator facilities. However, the luminosity and brilliance demands of high-energy physics and photon science require particle bunches to be accelerated at repetition rates of thousands or even millions per second, which are orders of magnitude higher than demonstrated with plasma-wakefield technology. Here we investigate the upper limit on repetition rates of beam-driven plasma accelerators by measuring the time it takes for the plasma to recover to its initial state after perturbation by a wakefield. The many-nanosecond-level recovery time measured establishes the in-principle attainability of megahertz rates of acceleration in plasmas. The experimental signatures of the perturbation are well described by simulations of a temporally evolving parabolic ion channel, transferring energy from the collapsing wake to the surrounding media. This result establishes that plasma-wakefield modules could be developed as feasible high-repetition-rate energy boosters at current and future particle-physics and photon-science facilities., Published by Nature Publ. Plasma accelerators driven by intense laser or particle beams provide gigavolt-per-meter accelerating fields, promising to drastically shrink particle accelerators for high-energy physics and photon science. Applications such as linear colliders and free-electron lasers (FELs) require high energy and energy efficiency, but also high stability and beam quality. The latter includes low energy spread, which can be achieved by precise beam loading of the plasma wakefield using longitudinally shaped bunches, resulting in efficient and uniform acceleration. However, the plasma wavelength, which sets the scale for the region of very large accelerating fields to be 100 {\mu}m or smaller, requires bunches to be synchronized and shaped with extreme temporal precision, typically on the femtosecond scale. Here, a self-correction mechanism is introduced, greatly reducing the susceptibility to jitter. Using multiple accelerating stages, each with a small bunch compression between them, almost any initial bunch, regardless of current profile or injection phase, will self-correct into the current profile that flattens the wakefield, damping the relative energy spread and any energy offsets. Electron beams to be accelerated in beam-driven plasma wakes are commonly formed by a photocathode and externally injected into the wakefield of a preceding bunch. Alternatively, using the plasma itself as a cathode offers the possibility of generating ultrashort, low-emittance beams by trapping and accelerating electrons from the ambient plasma background. Here, we present a beam-driven plasma cathode realized via laser-triggered density-downramp injection, showing stable beam formation over more than a thousand consecutive events with an injection probability of 95%. The plasma cathode is highly tunable, resulting in the injection of electron bunches of tens of pC of charge, energies of up to 79 MeV, and relative energy spreads as low as a few percent. The stability of the injected beams was sufficiently high to experimentally determine their normalized emittance of 9.3 μm rms with a multishot method.

The concept has been established over the last four years in a unique collaboration of 41 laboratories within a Horizon 2020 design study funded by the European Union. EuPRAXIA is the first European project that develops a dedicated particle accelerator research infrastructure based on novel plasma acceleration concepts and laser technology. It focuses on the development of electron accelerators and underlying technologies, their user communities, and the exploitation of existing accelerator infrastructures in Europe. EuPRAXIA has involved, amongst others, the international laser community and industry to build links and bridges with accelerator science — through realising synergies, identifying disruptive ideas, innovating, and fostering knowledge exchange. The Eu-PRAXIA project aims at the construction of an innovative electron accelerator using laser- and electron-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration that offers a significant reduction in size and possible savings in cost over current state-of-the-art radiofrequency-based accelerators. The foreseen electron energy range of one to five gigaelectronvolts (GeV) and its performance goals will enable versatile applications in various domains, e.g. as a compact free-electron laser (FEL), compact sources for medical imaging and positron generation, table-top test beams for particle detectors, as well as deeply penetrating X-ray and gamma-ray sources for material testing. EuPRAXIA is designed to be the required stepping stone to possible future plasma-based facilities, such as linear colliders at the high-energy physics (HEP) energy frontier. Consistent with a high-confidence approach, the project includes measures to retire risk by establishing scaled technology demonstrators. Such applications require particle beams with a well-controlled energy spectrum, which necessitates detailed tailoring of the plasma wakefield. Precise measurements of the effective wakefield structure are therefore essential for optimising the acceleration process. Here we propose and demonstrate such a measurement technique that enables femtosecond-level (15 fs) sampling of longitudinal electric fields of order gigavolts-per-meter (0.8 GV m⁻¹). This method—based on energy collimation of the incoming bunch—made it possible to investigate the effect of beam and plasma parameters on the beam-loaded longitudinally integrated plasma wakefield, showing good agreement with particle-in-cell simulations. The plasma wake provides strong focusing fields, which typically require beta functions on the mm-scale, comparable to those found in the final focusing of a linear collider. Such beams can be time consuming to experimentally produce and diagnose. We present a simple, fast, and noninvasive method to measure Twiss parameters in a linac using two beam position monitors only, relying on the similarity of the beam phase space and the jitter phase space. Providing beams with high energy, charge, and quality simultaneously, not only within the plasma but also at the user doorstep itself, is the main concern. Despite its tremendous efficiency in particle acceleration, the wakefield displays a complex 3D profile which, associated to the beam-loading field induced by the accelerated beam itself, makes the acceleration of high charge to high energy often incompatible with high beam quality. Beam extraction from the plasma without quality degradation for a transfer either to the next plasma stage or to the user application is another difficulty to consider. This article presents the substantial studies carried out and the different innovative methods employed for tackling all these different issues. Efforts focused on achieving the challenging beam parameters targeted by the EuPRAXIA accelerator facility project. The lessons learned at the end of these in-depth simulations and optimizations are highlighted. The sensitivity to different error sources is also estimated to point out the critical components of such an accelerator. One of the main challenges in these accelerators is to control beam-plasma instabilities with rapid growth rates which are induced by the strong transverse components of the wakefields. The hosing instability, a growing transverse oscillation of the beam centroid caused by coherent coupling between bunch slice centroids and transverse wakefields, was predicted to set severe limits on the possible acceleration distance in PWFAs. Several methods have been proposed to damp or even suppress the hosing of the beam, prevent beam-breakup and thus allow stable operation. To realize a plasma-based linear collider, acceleration of a positron bunch with high-efficiency is required, while maintaining both a low emittance and a subpercent-level energy spread. Recently, a plasma-based positron acceleration scheme was proposed in which a wake suitable for the acceleration and transport of positrons is produced in a plasma column by means of an electron drive beam [Diederichs et al., Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 22, 081301 (2019)]. In this article, we present a study of beam loading for a positron beam in this type of wake. The Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment (AWAKE) aims at studying plasma wakefield generation and electron acceleration driven by proton bunches. It is a proof-of-principle R&D experiment at CERN and the world's first proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment. The AWAKE experiment will be installed in the former CNGS facility and uses the 400 GeV/c proton beam bunches from the SPS. The first experiments will focus on the self-modulation instability of the long (rms ~12 cm) proton bunch in the plasma. These experiments are planned for the end of 2016. Later, in 2017/2018, low energy (~15 MeV) electrons will be externally injected to sample the wakefields and be accelerated beyond 1 GeV. The main goals of the experiment will be summarized. The AWAKE Collaboration has been formed in order to demonstrate proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration for the first time. This acceleration technique could lead to future colliders of high energy but of a much reduced length when compared to proposed linear accelerators. The CERN SPS proton beam in the CNGS facility will be injected into a 10 m plasma cell where the long proton bunches will be modulated into significantly shorter micro bunches. These micro-bunches will then initiate a strong wakefield in the plasma with peak fields above 1 GV/m that will be harnessed to accelerate a bunch of electrons from about 20 MeV to the GeV scale within a few meters. The experimental program is based on detailed numerical simulations of beam and plasma interactions. The main accelerator components, the experimental area and infrastructure required as well as the plasma cell and the diagnostic equipment are discussed in detail. First protons to the experiment are expected at the end of 2016 and this will be followed by an initial three-four years experimental program. Based on current CERN infrastructure, an electron-proton collider is proposed at a centre-of-mass energy of about 9 TeV. A 7 TeV LHC bunch is used as the proton driver to create a plasma wakefield which then accelerates electrons to 3 TeV, these then colliding with the other 7 TeV LHC proton beam. The basic parameters of the collider are presented, which although of very high energy, has integrated luminosities of the order of 1 pb$^{-1}$/year. For such a collider, with a centre-of-mass energy 30 times greater than HERA, parton momentum fractions, $x$, down to about $10^{-8}$ are accessible for $Q^2$ of 1 GeV$^2$ and could lead to effects of saturation or some other breakdown of DGLAP being observed. The total photon-proton cross section can be measured up to very high energies and also at different energies as the possibility of varying the electron beam energy is assumed; this could have synergy with cosmic-ray physics. Other physics which can be pursued at such a collider are contact interaction searches, such as quark and electron substructure, and measurements of the proton structure as well as other more conventional measurements of QCD at high energies and in a new kinematic regime. The events at very low $x$ will lead to electrons and the hadronic final state produced at very low angles and so a novel spectrometer device will be needed to measure these.
