1. Swampland conjectures for an almost topological gravity theory

Abstract

We analyze AdS and dS swampland conjectures in a three-dimensional higher spin theory with self-interacting matter, which contains conformal gravity and is almost topological. A theory of a similar type was proposed as the effective theory in the high energy phase of non-critical M-theory in 3D. With some details differing from the usual string theory story, it is found that the resulting effective theory, namely topologically massive gravity, fits well into the web of the proposed swampland conjectures. Supporting a recent proposal, in particular we find that this 3D theory gives rise to a quantum break time that scales like tQ∼H−1.

Abstract

Quantum gravity seeks to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity, the two pillars of modern physics, into a single consistent framework. One of the biggest achievements of quantum gravity is the discovery of the holographic principle (or holography). Holography suggests that the gravitational degrees of freedom in a region of space can be described by a quantum field theory on the boundary of that region. This thesis aims to study holography in the context of a three-dimensional gravity model, namely, topologically massive gravity (TMG) with a negative cosmological constant. It is a model of gravity with a topological term— gravitational Chern-Simons term—added to Einstein-Hilbert action. This term allows for the presence of a massive graviton in the theory.In this thesis, we develop holographic dictionary between warped black holes (WBHs) and warped conformal field theories (WCFTs). WBHs are three-dimensional rotating black holes that appear as solutions of TMG. WCFTs are two-dimensional non-relativistic field theories that share many similarities with two-dimensional CFTs. In addition to conventional holography, we develop WBH/WCFT correspondence in the near-extremal regime. This allows us to make contact with the holography for generic near-extremal black holes. Near-extremal black holes are black holes which have a very small Hawking temperature. We define and study their holographic counterparts—near-extremal WCFTs. We find strong support for WBH/WCFT correspondence. Abstract

Partially massless theory in three dimensions is revisited and its relationship with the self-dual massive gravity is considered. The only mode of the partially massless theory is shown explicitly through an action for a scalar field on (A)dS background. This fact can be generalized to higher dimensions. This degree of freedom is altered when a triadic Chern-Simons is introduced, giving rise to the self-dual massive gravity on (A)dS background. Abstract

Consistency of Einstein's gravitational field equation imposes a 'conservation condition' on the -tensor that is satisfied by (i) matter stress tensors, as a consequence of the matter equations of motion and (ii) identically by certain other tensors, such as the metric tensor. However, there is a third way, overlooked until now because it implies a 'nongeometrical' action: one not constructed from the metric and its derivatives alone. The new possibility is exemplified by the 3D 'minimal massive gravity' model, which resolves the 'bulk versus boundary' unitarity problem of topologically massive gravity with Anti-de Sitter asymptotics. Although all known examples of the third way are in three spacetime dimensions, the idea is general and could, in principle, apply to higher dimensional theories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
