International audience; The potential contributions of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) to soil organic C and mineral N supply depend on their C and N mineralization, which can be assessed in laboratory incubations. Such incubations are essential to calibrate decomposition models, because not all EOMs can be tested in the field. However, EOM incubations are resource-intensive. Therefore, easily measurable EOM characteristics that can be useful to predict EOM behaviour are needed. We quantified C and N mineralization during the incubation of 663 EOMs from five groups (animal manures, composts, sewage sludges, digestates and others). This represents one of the largest and diversified set of EOM incubations. The C and N mineralization varied widely between and within EOM subgroups. We simulated C and N mineralization with a simple generic decomposition model. Three calibration methods were compared. Individual EOM calibration of the model yielded good model performances, while the use of a unique parameter set per EOM subgroup decreased the model performance, and the use of two EOM characteristics to estimate model parameters gave an intermediate model performance (average RMSE-C values of 32, 99 and 65 mg C g(-1) added C and average RMSE-N values of 50, 126 and 110 mg N g(-1) added N, respectively). Because of the EOM variability, individual EOM calibration based on incubation remains the recommended method for predicting most accurately the C and N mineralization of EOMs. However, the two alternative calibration methods are sufficient for the simulation of EOMs without incubation data to obtain reasonable model performances.

A market survey has shown that consumers are interested in the organic label and alternatives to plastic pot. This paper assesses impacts of container, organic substrate and frequency of organic liquid fertilization on the quality and production cost of three herb species (basil, parsley and chives) through two trials. Ce document évalue les impacts du contenant, du substrat organique et de la fréquence de fertilisation organique liquide sur la qualité et le coût de production de trois espèces de fines herbes (le basilic, le persil et la ciboulette) à travers deux expérimentations. Ce document met aussi un avant les modalités les plus cohérentes (d’un point de vue agronomique, économique et commercial) pour l’entreprise.

International audience; The sensitivity of C and N mineralization in soil to water potential is mostly described in simulation models as a linear function independent of the pedoclimatic conditions. We hypothesized that water sensitivity could be sitespecific and dependent of climate or soil properties. In this study, we characterized the responses of C and N mineralization to water stress in ten soils representing a range of French arable cropping systems and evaluated whether the responses differ between soils and pedoclimatic contexts. C and N mineralization kinetics were quantified in laboratory incubations at four soil water potentials (pF) ranging from pF = 2.0 (~field capacity) to 4.2 (~permanent wilting point). The C and N mineralization rates, calculated by curve fitting, were linearly correlated with pF or relative water content (RWC). The slope of the linear regression, representing the sensitivity to water potential, differed significantly between sites, ranging from 0.12 to 0.35 pF-1 for C mineralization and 0.20 to 0.44 pF-1 for N mineralization. The sensitivity of C or N mineralization rate to pF or RWC could be well predicted by a couple of two soil properties: either microbial quotient (ratio of microbial biomass-C to total organic C) and soil pH or soil organic C:N ratio and soil pH. The sensitivity of soil to water stress was more accurately predicted by these site-specific variables than a model common to all pedoclimatic conditions. These results open the possibility of improving soil and soil-crop models for a more accurate prediction of water stress on C and N mineralization particularly in the context of climate change.

Increasing soil organic matter (SOM) is of primary importance for maintaining soil fertility and mitigating climate change. Leaving crop residues on top of soil is not always an efficient means of increasing SOM because (i) of the high mineralization of the crop residues, (ii) crop residues may increase the mineralization of existing SOM (priming effect) and (iii) wetting-drying cycles may increase mineralization of SOM and crop residues. Little research has been carried out into these mechanisms under Sudano-Sahelian conditions where the rainfall is mostly irregular with wetting-drying cycles during the transition between the wet and the dry season. To evaluate the effect of wetting-drying cycles on the mineralization of SOM and crop residues and the priming effect, an agricultural soil from the North Region of Cameroon with or without (controls) 13 C-labeled rice straw amendment as crop residues was either subjected to five wetting-drying cycles or maintained at constant water potential after a single rewetting event. Soil samples were incubated for 70 days at 28 °C and the CO 2 and 13 CO 2 emissions and mineral N were monitored. Adding straw (+ 833 μg C g − 1 soil) increased the cumulative CO 2 emissions from the soil (+ 921 μg C-CO 2 g − 1 soil). A positive priming effect was observed (+ 92 μg C-CO 2 g − 1 soil). Only the first wetting cycle created a mineralization flush of the SOM and the straw. This flush did not recur probably because of a lack of labile SOM. However an extra addition of straw after 28 days increased CO 2 emissions but did not result in further mineralization flushes after re-wetting while SOM mineralization was not limited by N availability. We conclude that SOM depletion under Sudano-Sahelian conditions was not explained by SOM mineralization enhancement due to multiple rewetting events or to priming effect following crop residues addition. Indeed, SOM depletion could rather be explained by a high level of mineralization of both, SOM and crop residues, when the soil reached its water retention capacity.

International audience; Process-based crop and grassland models estimating carbon (C) and nitrogen(N) dynamics are widely used to investigate best management practices in agricul-ture. They integrate several processes in a complex structure, but studies wheremodules corresponding to specific processes extracted from the whole model struc-ture are assessed independently are uncommon. With the support of documentedaerobic incubation trials in manure-amended soils, a sensitivity analysis was per-formed on the C–N cycling processes of four modules (MOD1–4), correspondingto the models APSIM, EPIC, FASSET and STICS. The results showed that theparameter‘substrate use efficiency’had the most effect on the predicted values ofnet CO2emissions and net N mineralization, together with the C/N ratio of the soilmicrobial biomass. They explained 74–75% on average of both output variances,whereas parameters determining manure C and N partitioning and first-orderdecomposition constants of manure pools explained, on average, an additional17–19%. Efforts should be focused on calibrating these parameters for more accu-rate simulations. The greater sensitivity of both outputs to parameters related tomanure pools in more complex modules (MOD2–4) facilitates their adaptation tospecific contexts, whereas MOD1 probably requires that parameters related to soilpools are also adapted to specific applications. Parameter interactions were limited,becoming noticeable only in situations of N-limited soil organic matter decomposi-tion. Models MOD1 and MOD3 allowed the C/N ratio of the soil microbial bio-mass to vary temporarily; therefore, they were less sensitive to mineral Navailability and more easily adapted to a wide range of situations. This study pro-vides essential information to support the development of state-of-the-art biogeo-chemical models.

"Ce que Nous Savons Sur" n°4; Nous présentons dans ce rapport les résultats des études conduites à l'INRA en Guadeloupe sur la dynamique de l'azote (N) disponible pour les cultures (biodisponible) dans les sols acides de Basse-Terre. Nous nous attachons d'abord à décrire les processus qui amènent à rendre disponible l'N contenu dans la matière organique du sol (minéralisation, ammonification, nitrification) et ensuite ceux qui induisent sa perte définitive (lessivage, volatilisation, dénitrification) ou temporaire (immobilisation). Nous faisons un focus particulier sur l'impact de l'acidité du sol sur cette dynamique ainsi que sur les fonctions du sol qui permettent de réduire les pertes d'N disponible (inhibition de la nitrification, adsorption des nitrates), et assurer l'efficacité des apports azotés et l'absorption de la plante. Dans la plupart des cas, l'N biodisponible est retrouvé sous la forme d'ammonium, plus adsorbé par les argiles et moins lessivable que les nitrates. Cette caractéristique, particulière aux sols acides, est la conséquence de l'impact de l'acidité sur l'inhibition partielle de la nitrification, c'est-à-dire de la transformation de l'ammonium en nitrates. Cette fonction inhibitrice, favorable à la conservation de l'N biodisponible, est dépendante du pH et donc peut être négativement affectée par une mauvaise gestion du chaulage (p.ex. excès). La décomposition des résidus en post-récolte produit une disparition temporaire de l'N biodisponible (immobilisation), dont l'importance et la durée dépendent de la quantité et la qualité de la paille. Ce phénomène doit être considéré pour définir la date de plantation ou de semis afin d'éviter "la faim d'azote". Suite à cette immobilisation, l'N contenu dans les résidus est libéré et peut contribuer significativement à la nutrition de la culture suivante. Ce plus d'N doit être inclus dans les calculs des doses d'engrais afin d'éviter la sur-fertilisation des cultures. Le lessivage des nitrates est la principale cause des pertes de l'N biodisponible sous climat tropical humide, mais il est limité par la capacité d'adsorption des nitrates des argiles présents dans les sols acides. Encore une fois, l'excès de chaulage peut réduire cette capacité et ainsi accroître le lessivage et les pertes d'N. Une plus grande efficacité des apports azotés peut être obtenue en utilisant des engrais de type ammoniacal et en évitant de les appliquer au pied de la plante. Dans le cas des amendements organiques, leur non enfouissement réduit le risque de lessivage, mais cette pratique dépend des normes réglementaires et, pour certains amendements, des désagréments causés par l'application superficielle. Le mélange des espèces ayant des profils racinaires différents peut aussi contribuer à améliorer l'efficacité d'utilisation de l'N biodisponible, en jouant sur la complémentarité de l'absorption d'N dans le profil du sol : plus superficielle pour l'ammonium, plus profond pour les nitrates lessivés. La volatilisation et la dénitrification ne devraient pas être des contraintes fortes dans les sols acides de Guadeloupe : l'acidité ne favorise pas la volatilisation, le bon drainage des sols ne favorise pas l'apparition des sites dénitrifiants. En conclusion, une bonne gestion de l'N biodisponible, provenant de la matière organique du sol ou apporté par les engrais et amendements, doit s'appuyer sur la valorisation des propriétés des sols acides qui favorisent la rétention de l’N, tout en évitant les pratiques qui pourraient l’affecter négativement.

Changes in the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) compartments that result from the addition of organic material (OM) to the soil are predicted by the transformation of added OM (TAO) model with three parameters: very labile (P′L) and stable (PS) fractions of the OM and the rate of remineralization (kremin) of nitrogen immobilized by microorganisms. We propose relations between P′L, PS, kremin and various chemical groups in the OM identified by their 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The aromatic content increased the predicted PS in accordance with published results. The O-aromatic content also increased PS, but much less so than the aromatic content. The carboxyl content decreased PS and increased P′L as in the TAO model based on infrared spectrometry. The carbonyl content decreased P′L, whereas di-O-alkyl increased P′L. The chemical composition of the population of decomposer organisms did not appear to be homeostatic, but was related rather to the composition of the substrate: kremin was positively correlated with the carboxyl and di-O-alkyl content and negatively correlated with the alkyl content. Solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy gave better predictions of the transformations that resulted from adding OM than biochemical fractionation and near infrared reflectance spectrometry (NIRS). It is fast and non-destructive and provides new insights into the processes that control decomposition for research into waste recycling, agro-ecology and climate change.

Nitrogen transfer between litter components is often presented as a key mechanism responsible for the synergistic effect of litter mixtures on decomposition rates. The litter cover is a heterogeneous environment stemming from the input of chemically distinct materials and the transfer of nutrients in this patchy environment is likely to fulfil the specific needs of microbial communities in each micro environment. Our study aimed to gain insight into the factors controlling N dynamics within and between leaves" and woody components in the litter cover. We used N-15 labelling to discriminate endogenous and exogenous N and to measure N transfers between three types of litter components, viz. leaves and twigs (L +T), bark and branches, in 162 litter bags for more than 2 years in two Congolese Eucalyptus forests with contrasting N status (low-N vs high-N litter). Large quantities of N were released from N-rich L + Tat the end of the study while early release of leachable N was only observed for the high-N L + T. Exogenous N was only incorporated in N-poor litter components (bark and branches) and a net increase in N compared to the initial quantities only occurred in the low-N bark. The bi-directional N transfers observed between litter components were most likely microbially-mediated rather than driven by abiotic leaching. Nitrogen transfers were controlled by the N status of both source and sink litter components, contrary to the diffusion theory based on concentration gradient. For a given source, more N was transferred to N-rich than to N-poor sink components. Our results suggested that the microbial community might control both the quantity of N available to be transferred to other microsites and the quantity that is actually transferred, presumably because the potential for N immobilization may be limited in N-poor litter components. Interactions among micro-environments can favor chemical convergence from distinct litter components to humified organic matter along the decay continuum.

Sustainable wood production requires appropriate management of commercial forest plantations. Establishment of industrial eucalypt plantations on poor sandy soils leads to a high loss of nutrients including nitrogen (N) after wood harvesting. An ecological intensification of eucalypt plantations was tested with the replacement of half of the Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis by Acacia mangium in the eucalypt monoculture to sustain soil fertility through enhancement of the N biological cycle. A randomised block design was set up on ferralitic arenosol in the Congolese coastal plains to assess differences in soil N mineralisation, N fluxes in litterfall, and N stocks in forest floor litter and soil between pure acacia (100A), pure eucalypt (100E) and mixed-species treatments (50A50E). Soil N mineralisation was enhanced under acacia, reaching on average 0.17 and 0.15 mg kg−1 soil d−1 in 100A and 50A50E, respectively, compared with 0.09 mg kg−1 soil d−1 in 100E. Higher amounts of N returning to the soil through harvest residues and litterfall were observed under acacia than under eucalypt. However, N stock in mineral soil was not increased in 100A and exhibited a limited increase only in the top soil layer of 50A50E. Our results suggest a much faster N turnover under acacia than under eucalypt. Although A. mangium is an exotic N2-fixing tree in central Africa, it appears to be well adapted to the climatic and edaphic conditions of the Congo, showing an efficient growth strategy. National audience; Les cycles des nutriments, en particulier de l’azote et du phosphore, sont sous la dépendance des populations microbiennes du sol vivant dans l’environnement des racines, défini comme la « rhizosphère ». La symbiose mycorhizienne, établie entre les racines et les champignons mycorhiziens du sol, contribue de façon importante à l’amélioration de la nutrition minérale des plantes (N et surtout P), en augmentant la mobilisation et le prélèvement des éléments minéraux par les hyphes qui se développent hors des racines, puis en transférant ces éléments minéraux à la plante-hôte. Cependant, par rapport à la symbiose mycorhizienne, les populations bactériennes de la rhizosphère jouent un rôle très important dans la minéralisation des composés organiques, conduisant à la production d’éléments minéraux (N et P) qui sont à la base de la nutrition minérale des cultures. Mais ces populations bactériennes peuvent aussi immobiliser les éléments minéraux produits, rentrant ainsi en compétition avec les cultures. Dans ce contexte, le rôle de la prédation des bactéries du sol par la microfaune devrait être mieux pris en compte pour une meilleure compréhension du cycle des nutriments dans le sol. L’exposé s’appuiera sur (i) les résultats d’une méta-analyse de la littérature et (ii) des exemples relatifs à la minéralisation de l’azote et du phosphore organique pour illustrer l’importance des relations trophiques qui peuvent conditionner très fortement le recyclage de certains composés organiques qui, autrement, restent inaccessibles aux plantes.

Le sol est un compartiment majeur de stockage du carbone (C) organique de l'écosystème terrestre. Il joue un rôle important dans la régulation du climat. Toute variation des flux de carbone entre l'atmosphère et l'écosystème terrestre pourrait avoir un impact important sur l'augmentation de CO2 dans l'atmosphère, mais aussi sur la diminution des teneurs en matière organique du sol et donc sur la fertilité des sols. Au Nord Cameroun, les sols sont exposés à de longues périodes sèches (5 à 6 mois par an) qui alternent avec une saison humide. La période de transition entre ces deux saisons, peut durer de mi-avril à fin juin et est caractérisée par des pluies très irrégulières. Ces cycles d'humectation-dessiccation pourraient selon la littérature accentuer la minéralisation du carbone organique du sol et le cycle des éléments nutritifs. L'objectif de cette étude est de quantifier l'impact des cycles humectation-dessiccation sur la minéralisation du carbone dans un contexte soudano-sahélien. Pour faire des mesures représentatives sur le terrain, il est nécessaire d'étudier la variation sur 24 heures de la respiration du sol après humectation suite à une période sèche. Cette mise au point méthodologique a montré que la respiration du sol présente une courbe quadratique au cours de la journée, devenant presque linéaire au cours de la nuit. La température et l'humidité du sol ont permis d'expliquer au moins 73% des variations sur 24 heures. Ces observations ont été utilisées pour proposer une méthode pour estimer la respiration moyenne diurne et nocturne après humectation des sols. La méthode proposée dans cette étude a l'avantage d'être basée sur un nombre réduit de mesures et est par conséquent plus facile à mettre en oeuvre pour suivre la respiration du sol sur 24 heures après les premières pluies. Une première étude expérimentale de terrain a permis de montrer que la ré-humectation des sols et le mode de gestion des pailles ont augmenté la minéralisation du carbone de ces sols. En revanche, la fréquence des cycles humectation-dessiccation des sols sur une période de 50 jours n'a pas augmenté la minéralisation cumulée du carbone des sols. Au Nord Cameroun, la minéralisation rapide des pailles rend difficile l'augmentation des stocks de carbone du sol par conservation des pailles des cultures précédentes à la surface du sol. Dans une seconde expérimentation de laboratoire, en conditions contrôlées, les cycles humectation-dessiccation n'ont pas augmenté la minéralisation du carbone organique du sol et de l'azote (N) par rapport aux sols maintenus humides. Cependant, les émissions de CO2 ont augmenté avec l'addition de paille enrichie en carbone-13. Cette addition de la paille marquée a augmenté la minéralisation de la matière organique du sol (priming effect). La minéralisation de la paille a diminué avec les cycles humectation-dessiccation et la quantité de paille restante était de 102 μg Cg-1 sol sur les sols ré-humectés contre 48 μg Cg-1 sol sur les sols maintenus humides. L'absence de cette réponse de la minéralisation du carbone et d'azote du sol aux cycles humectation-dessiccation pourrait être liée à une baisse de l'activité microbienne durant les périodes de dessèchement et l'absence d'une augmentation soutenue des taux de minéralisation du carbone avec les cycles ultérieurs d'humectation-dessiccation.
