Generalizations that cast Arnold Bennett as a writer concerned with everyday life have meant the details, nuances, and complexities of his works are overlooked. This article examines one particular facet of the everyday in Bennett's work—his attention to unassuming, day-to-day life over incidents of nominal historical importance in The Old Wives' Tale ; it also draws upon similar preoccupations in Clayhanger and his nonfiction. Bennett said that the "secret life of cities is a matter for endless brooding" and his characters are surrounded by myriad, unknown daily existences, an illimitable totality that precludes a singular, historical account. The argument here does not offer a reading of Bennett's sense of historical progress but argues that The Old Wives' Tale implicates a critical reassessment of the interplay of history and the everyday. Pore network models (PNM) of Berea and Fontainebleau sandstones were constructed using nonlinear programming (NLP) and optimization methods. The constructed PNMs are considered as a digital representation of the rock samples which were based on matching the macroscopic properties of the porous media and used to conduct fluid transport simulations including single and two-phase flow. The PNMs consisted of cubic networks of randomly distributed pores and throats sizes and with various connectivity levels. The networks were optimized such that the upper and lower bounds of the pore sizes are determined using the capillary tube bundle model and the Nelder–Mead method instead of guessing them, which reduces the optimization computational time significantly. An open-source PNM framework was employed to conduct transport and percolation simulations such as invasion percolation and Darcian flow. The PNM model was subsequently used to compute the macroscopic properties; porosity, absolute permeability, specific surface area, breakthrough capillary pressure, and primary drainage curve. The pore networks were optimized to allow for the simulation results of the macroscopic properties to be in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements. This study demonstrates that non-linear programming and optimization methods provide a promising method for pore network modeling when computed tomography imaging may not be readily available. Based on a close reading of Pierre Milan’s and René Boyvin’s engraving of the Nymph of Fontainebleau (c.1545–54), this article addresses the paragone debate underlying the multimedia productions that characterized French Renaissance aesthetics. Despite being a central work of French sixteenth-century art, the engraving has been discussed mostly as a record of a lost painting by Rosso Fiorentino. However, a comparison to closely related works, together with an attentive consideration of the enigmatic relationship between its three components—image, inscriptions, frame—reveals that it is a sophisticated representation with multiple levels of meaning that have not been previously considered, and which are fundamentally concerned with self-reflexive issues of artistic production. The apparent contradictions between the image and the text of the engraving raise art-theoretical questions about fictive illusionistic representation and the status of print as a medium. This article contextualizes these theoretical issues within the historical reception of the paragone in Renaissance France, while examining the ways in which the very nature of sixteenth-century prints—by way of their historical connection to drawing—highlight the diversity between media and provide a particular lens for approaching the questions underlying the comparison between the arts.
