Background: The evaluation of evidence, which frequently takes the form of scientific evidence, necessitates the input of experts in relevant fields. The results are presented as expert opinions or expert evaluations, which are generally accepted as a reliable representation of the facts. A further issue that remains unresolved though is the process of evaluating the expertise and knowledge of an expert in the first instance. In general, earned certificates, grades and other objective criteria are typically regarded as representative documentation to substantiate an expert status. However, there is a possibility that these may not always be sufficiently representative. Objectives: The goal of the present study was to provide evidence that the neural processing of law-relevant and law-irrelevant terms varies significantly between participants who have received training in the field of law (experts) and those who have not (novices). Methods: To this end, changes in brain activity were recorded via electroencephalography (EEG) during visual presentations of terms belonging to five different categories (fake right, democracy, filler word, basic right and rule of law). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were subsequently averaged for each category and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The results clearly demonstrate that participants trained in law processed fake rights and filler words in a similar manner. Furthermore, both of these conditions elicited different levels of brain activity compared to all law-relevant terms. This was not the case in participants who had not received legal training. The brains of untrained participants processed all five term categories in a strikingly similar manner. In light of prior knowledge regarding language processing, the primary focus was on two distinct electrode locations: one in the left posterior region, and the other in the left frontal region. In both locations, the most prominent differences in brain activity elicited by the aforementioned term categories in law-trained participants occurred approximately 450 milliseconds after stimulus onset. The results were further corroborated by a repeated-measures ANOVA and subsequent t-tests, which also demonstrated the absence of this effect in law-untrained participants. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide empirical evidence that brain activity measurements, in particular ERPs, can be used to distinguish between experts trained in a specific field of expertise and novices in that field. Such findings have the potential to facilitate objective assessments of expertise, enabling comparisons between experts and novices that extend beyond traditional criteria such as qualifications and experience. A tactile event-related potential (ERP)-based brain–computer interface (BCI) system is an alternative for enhancing the control and communication abilities of quadriplegic patients with visual or auditory impairments. Hence, in this study, we proposed a tactile stimulus pattern using a vibrotactile stimulator for a multicommand BCI system. Additionally, we observed a tactile ERP response to the target from random vibrotactile stimuli placed in the left and right wrist and elbow positions to create commands. An experiment was conducted to explore the location of the proposed vibrotactile stimulus and to verify the multicommand tactile ERP-based BCI system. Using the proposed features and conventional classification methods, we examined the classification efficiency of the four commands created from the selected EEG channels. The results show that the proposed vibrotactile stimulation with 15 stimulus trials produced a prominent ERP response in the Pz channels. The average classification accuracy ranged from 61.9% to 79.8% over 15 stimulus trials, requiring 36 s per command in offline processing. The P300 response in the parietal area yielded the highest average classification accuracy. The proposed method can guide the development of a brain–computer interface system for physically disabled people with visual or auditory impairments to control assistive and rehabilitative devices. We investigated objective brain vital signs derived from event-related potentials (ERPs) for mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes and matched controls (N = 24). Brain vital sign scans were acquired from 9 MMA athletes and 15 age-and sex-matched controls. Our analysis specifically compared differences in brain vital signs between MMA athletes and controls at baseline. We predicted that MMA athletes would show significant differences relative to controls due to their ongoing exposure to repetitive head impacts. Participants were scanned to extract three well-established ERPs: N100 for auditory sensation; P300 for basic attention; and N400 for cognitive processing. Scans were verified using automated reports, with N100, P300, and N400 amplitudes and latencies manually identified by a blinded reviewer. Brain vital signs were compared across groups with a Kruskal-Wallis H-test for independent samples, with FDR correction for multiple comparisons. We identified significant differences between MMA athletes and controls. Specifically, there were significant N400 amplitude reductions, indicating that exposure to repetitive head impacts in MMA may be associated with changes in brain function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Error monitoring is essential for detecting errors and may facilitate behavioral adjustments that can reduce or prevent future errors. At times, error monitoring must occur while individuals are engaged in other, cognitively demanding tasks that might consume processing resources necessary for error monitoring. Here, we set out to determine whether concurrent working memory (WM) load interferes with error monitoring, as measured using event‐related potentials, the error‐related negativity (Ne/ERN), and error positivity (Pe). Fifty‐four participants (n = 33 female) completed an arrowhead flanker task, with trials presented under low (2 letter) or high (6 letter) WM load. Participants were required to hold letter strings in memory and to recall these letters at the end of a set of flanker trials. Results showed that WM load reduced the Pe but did not affect the Ne/ERN. Therefore, WM load appeared to attenuate later, more elaborated stages of error processing, though initial error detection was unaffected. Additionally, high WM load slowed reaction times overall, but did not lead to a significant increase in errors. As such, slower responses may have helped participants maintain comparable accuracy for low‐load versus high‐load trials. Individuals with this condition are unable to differentiate between colors due to the absence or impairment of one or more color photoreceptors in their retinas. This disorder can be diagnosed through multiple approaches. This review paper provides a comprehensive summary of studies on applying Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) technology for diagnosing CVD. Abstract tDCS modulates the activity of the neuronal networks to induce the desired behavioural changes. Two factors determine its effectiveness- (1) whether the network being stimulated is relevant to the task, and (2) if there is a scope for improvement in behavioral performance. To explore this, both dorsal (sub-lexical) and ventral (lexical) reading networks were stimulated (20 min, 2 mA) in 25 healthy young volunteers. Participants performed two reading tasks with different levels of lexical involvement: word fragment completion tasks (WCT) and word association tasks (WAT), while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded simultaneously. The study used a within-subject design over three sessions, comparing various electrode montages targeting the dorsal pathway's left inferior parietal lobule or the ventral reading pathway's left middle temporal lobule, as well as sham stimulation. The impact of tDCS sessions (dorsal, ventral, & sham) and task type (WCT & WAT) on priming effects (primed vs. unprimed) of behavioral performance (accuracy and reaction times), and ERP parameters (N400 amplitudes and latencies) were statistically analyzed.It was found that tDCS modulated the performance of WAT only (a task with a lower priming effect). The failure to modulate WCT (larger priming effect) indicated that tDCS was effective for conditions with room for improvement compared to a task where performance has reached the ceiling. Ventral stimulation enhanced accuracy in the WAT condition and shortened the N400 latency of the priming effect. In contrast, dorsal stimulation delayed the priming effect reaction time in the WAT condition and enhanced the N400 amplitude. To conclude, enhancement in performance due to tDCS occurs when the network (ventral) being stimulated aligns with the cognitive demands of the task and there is a scope for improvement.

Provided the significant overlap in features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), there is a critical need to identify transdiagnostic markers that could meaningfully stratify subgroups. The objective of this study was to compare the visual evoked potential (VEP) between 30 autistic children, 17 autistic children with co-occurring ADHD presentation (ASD + ADHD), and 21 neurotypical children (NTC). Electroencephalography was recorded while children passively viewed a pattern-reversal stimulus. Mean amplitude of the P1 event-related potential was extracted from a midline occipital channel and compared between groups. P1 mean amplitude was reduced in the ASD + ADHD group compared to the ASD and NTC groups, indicating a distinct pattern of brain activity in autistic children with co-occurring ADHD features. The neural circuits of reward processing and interval timing (including the perception and production of temporal intervals) are functionally intertwined, suggesting that it might be possible for momentary reward processing to influence subsequent timing behavior. Previous animal and human studies have mainly focused on the effect of reward on interval perception, whereas its impact on interval production is less clear. In this study, we examined whether feedback, as an example of performance‐contingent reward, biases interval production. We recorded EEG from 20 participants while they engaged in a continuous drumming task with different realistic tempos (1728 trials per participant). Participants received color‐coded feedback after each beat about whether they were correct (on time) or incorrect (early or late). Regression‐based EEG analysis was used to unmix the rapid occurrence of a feedback response called the reward positivity (RewP), which is traditionally observed in more slow‐paced tasks. Using linear mixed modeling, we found that RewP amplitude predicted timing behavior for the upcoming beat. This performance‐biasing effect of the RewP was interpreted as reflecting the impact of fluctuations in reward‐related anterior cingulate cortex activity on timing, and the necessity of continuous paradigms to make such observations was highlighted. This study demonstrated that the reward positivity, an EEG signal associated with reward processing, could be observed in a continuous, naturalistic timing paradigm. This study used event-related potential (ERP) and retrieval practice effect paradigm to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying the retrieval practice effect in a third language (L3) vocabulary learning. Thirty-five Chinese (First Language, L1)-English (Second Language, L2) bilinguals without prior knowledge of French (L3) studied 120 French (L3)–English (L2) word pairs and then practiced the word pairs through retrieval practice or repeated studying. On a final recognition test 30 minutes later, the participants were asked to perform old/new recognition judgments while recording electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Behavioural results found that retrieval practice led to a higher accuracy rate and faster response time in the final test than repeated studying. ERP results found that retrieval practice elicited less negative N400 waveforms than repeated studying at the frontal site and less negative N400 waveforms than new condition at the central-parietal sites. By contrast, retrieval practice only elicited more positive LPC waveforms than new condition at the parietal site. In sum, the present results provide first neural evidence that retrieval practice facilitates L3 (French) vocabulary learning. These findings suggest that retrieval practice might involve more semantic information processing in L3 vocabulary learning, which supports the elaborative retrieval hypothesis of the retrieval practice effect. The functional activities of the brain during any task like imaginary, motor, or cognitive are different in pattern as well as their area of activation in the brain is also different. This variation in pattern is also found in the brain's electrical variations that can be measured from the scalp of the brain using an electroencephalogram (EEG). This work exclusively studied a group of subjects' EEG data (available at: https://archive.physionet.org/physiobank/database/eegmat/) to unravel the activation pattern of the human brain during a mental arithmetic task. Since any cognitive task creates variations in EEG signal pattern, the relative changes in the signal power also occur which is also known as event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS). In this work, ERD/ERS have calculated the band-wise power spectral density (PSD) using Welch's method from the EEG signals. Besides, the coherence analysis was also performed to verify the results of ERD/ERS analysis from several randomly chosen subjects' EEG data. Here, subjects performing mental arithmetic tasks were grouped based on their performances: good (subtraction solved > 10 on average) and bad (subtraction solved ≤ 10 on average) to conduct group-specific ERD/ERS analysis regarding their performance in cognitive tasks. It was found that when the brain is on count condition, the variations found in the band power of theta and beta. The amounts of ERS in the left hemisphere are increased. When the task complexity increases, it contributes to an increase in relative ERD/ERS amounts and durations. The left and right hemispheres were asymmetrically distributed by both the pre-stimulus stages of the corresponding band power and relative ERD/ERS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the first year of life, infants start to learn the lexicon of their native language. Word learning includes the establishment of longer-term representations for the phonological form and the meaning of the word in the brain, as well as the link between them. However, it is not known how the brain processes word forms immediately after they have been learned. We familiarized 12-monthold infants (N = 52) with two pseudowords and studied their neural signatures. Specifically, we determined whether a newly learned word form elicits neural signatures similar to those observed when a known word is recognized (i.e., when a well-established word representation is activated, eliciting enhanced mismatch responses) or whether the processing of a newly learned word form shows the suppression of the neural response along with the principles of predictive coding of a learned rule (i.e., the order of the syllables of the new word form). The pattern of results obtained in the current study suggests that recognized word forms elicit a mismatch response of negative polarity, similar to newly learned and previously known words with an established representation in long-term memory. In contrast, prediction errors caused by acoustic novelty or deviation from the expected order in a sequence of (pseudo)words elicit responses of positive polarity. Pro-environmental behavior requires individuals to pay the cost to improve or protect the environment. The arousal: cost-reward model holds that emergency and cost jointly determine prosocial behaviors, and empirical evidence showed that emergency and cost were determinants of prosocial behaviors. However, the effects of emergency situations and costs on the pro-environmental behaviors and the underlying neurophysiological mechanism remain unclear. Using the event-related potential techniques, this study explored neural responses to the effects of emergency and cost on the pro-environmental behavior. Participants were asked to accept or reject pro-environmental options that involve different costs in emergency and non-emergency situations. The behavioral results showed that the pro-environmental behavior decreased as cost increase in non-emergency situations, whereas the high-cost pro-environmental behavior was significantly reduced, and low-cost and moderate-cost pro-environmental behaviors were not significant in emergency situations. The event-related potential results showed that the wave with a 300ms latency and late positive potential amplitudes of low cost were significantly higher than those of moderate and high costs in non-emergency situations, whereas there was not significant difference at the wave with a 300ms latency and late positive potential amplitudes of three costs in emergency situations. This suggests that emergency situations can induce more emotional arousal and increase low-cost and moderate-cost pro-environmental behaviors, but such empathic arousal cannot affect the high-cost pro-environmental behavior. Packaging design is pivotal in motivating consumer decisions, as a key communication tool from creation to purchase. Currently, the interpretation and evaluation of packaging's impact are shifting toward non-traditional methods. This pilot study evaluated the packaging perception of York Ham and Turkey Breast products. The event-related potential (ERP) technique, the methodology priming words (positive and negative), and target images (original and modified packaging) were applied. A total of 23 participants were sampled using a 32-channels scalp elastic electrode cap and viewed 200 trials of word–image matching. Participants responded whether the images and adjectives matched or not, using the two groups of images. The results demonstrate an N400 effect in the parietal area. This region was observed to show evidence of cognitive processing related to congruency or incongruency, by contrasting the priming and target of this study. The evaluation positioned the York Ham packaging as the best rated. The findings show a relevant contribution to ERPs and research related to the food packaging perception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is currently a suitable gaze-independent paradigm for controlling visual brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) based on event-related potentials (ERPs), especially for users with limited eye movement control. However, unlike gaze-dependent paradigms, gaze-independent ones have received less attention concerning the specific choice of visual stimuli that are used. In gaze-dependent BCIs, images of faces—particularly those tinted red—have been shown to be effective stimuli. This study aims to evaluate whether the colour of faces used as visual stimuli influences ERP-BCI performance under RSVP. Fifteen participants tested four conditions that varied only in the visual stimulus used: grey letters (GL), red famous faces with letters (RFF), green famous faces with letters (GFF), and blue famous faces with letters (BFF). The results indicated significant accuracy differences only between the GL and GFF conditions, unlike prior gaze-dependent studies. Additionally, GL achieved higher comfort ratings compared with other face-related conditions. This study highlights that the choice of stimulus type impacts both performance and user comfort, suggesting implications for future ERP-BCI designs for users requiring gaze-independent systems. Background and Aims: Glioma growth in eloquent language areas induces adaptive activation changes in the language network. The present study aimed to (1) investigate the pre- to postoperative evolution of neural phoneme perception processes in glioma patients and (2) assess if event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting phoneme perception can provide added value to the diagnostic approach in individuals undergoing awake surgery. Methods and Procedures: In five persons undergoing an awake craniotomy for the resection of a glioma, pre- and postoperative behavioural language assessment (Aachen Aphasia Test, Comprehensive Aphasia Test and Boston Naming Test) and electrophysiological investigation of phoneme perception was performed. For the latter, ERPs were obtained through the administration of an inattentive (Mismatch Negativity; MMN) and attentive (P300) oddball paradigm containing a phonemic articulation place contrast during EEG recording. Outcomes and Results: Aberrant phoneme categorization processing was evidenced in all five participants preoperatively based on the MMN and P300 amplitude and latency. Moreover, mild behavioural impairments were found in four participants at this time. Postoperatively, three out of five participants reached behavioural ceiling effects, while four individuals displayed normalization of electrophysiological measures. Conclusions: While neural processing of phoneme contrasts was preoperatively affected by glioma-induced disturbances, a high potential for postsurgical plasticity was shown. As four participants presented with a high grade glioma, tumour grade might partially account for this pattern. Addition of electrophysiological tests to the language assessment could provide benefits in both the preand postoperative clinical diagnostic approach in glioma patients. Savoring is a positive emotion up‐regulation technique that can increase electrocortical and self‐reported valence and arousal to positive and neutral pictures, with effects persisting to increase response to the same stimuli when encountered later. Outside of the lab, emotion regulation techniques that persist to affect not just encounters with the same stimuli but also encounters with similar, but previously unencountered stimuli should save individuals time and effort. Here, we used event‐related potentials and picture ratings to test whether savoring would generalize to similar, but previously unseen positive pictures. To this end, 89 participants (56 female; M age = 18.96 years, SD = 1.87) were asked to savor positive pictures from one category (e.g., happy people) and to view positive pictures from another category (e.g., cute animals), as well as to view neutral pictures (e.g., plants). In a subsequent passive picture viewing task, participants viewed novel pictures from all three categories (i.e., happy people, cute animals, plants). In the first task, savoring was effective for pictures of animals throughout picture presentation, but only for pictures of people during the later part of picture presentation. In the second task, savoring generalized to novel pictures of animals, though this was only evident in the early portion of picture processing (and for self‐reported ratings). Therefore, savoring holds promise as a useful technique for increasing positive emotion in everyday life, though more work is needed to understand whether effects may vary depending on different types of picture content. We tested whether savoring, a technique for increasing positive emotion, would generalize to novel, similar stimuli, thereby saving individuals time and effort. Participants performed a savor and view task, before viewing similar pictures in a passive view task. Results showed that pictures resembling those that had previously been savored elicited increased late positive potentials and more emotional ratings than pictures resembling those that had been viewed. This study employs event-related potential (ERP) to examine the impact of empathic concern on prosocial decision-making with costs in both gain and loss contexts. In this experiment, participants can choose between two types of lottery tickets and pay lottery money to help the target person gain more money or lose less money. The behavioral results showed that regardless of the context of the decision (financial loss or gain), participants tended to help individuals who had induced high empathic concern. ERP results show that compared to the low-empathic-concern condition, the high-empathic-concern condition induced greater P3 amplitude in the gain context. However, this change in P3 amplitude caused by empathic concern did not occur in the context of loss. These findings indicate that empathic concern has different psychological mechanisms that moderate prosocial behavior in gain and loss contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Video game addiction (VGA) is associated with cognitive problems, particularly deficits in inhibitory control. The present study aimed to investigate behavioural responses and event‐related potential associated with specific response inhibition using the cued Go/NoGo task to examine the effects of VGA on brain activity related to response inhibition. Twenty‐five individuals addicted to video games (action video games) and 25 matched healthy controls participated in the study. The results showed that the VGA group had significantly more commission error in the NoGo trials and faster reaction time in the Go trials compared with the control group. The event‐related potential analyses revealed significant reductions in amplitudes of N2 cue and N2 NoGo in the VGA group. While there was no significant difference between the N2 amplitudes of the Go and NoGo trials in the VGA group, the control group had a larger N2 amplitude in the NoGo trials. These results indicate that VGA subjects have difficulties in the early stages of response inhibition, as well as some level of impairment in proactive cognitive control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trust and distrust are constructs that have provoked and undergone lots of discussion in the fields of sociology and psychology. However, to our knowledge, there is little agreement about how these constructs should be treated in the future. The present study tries to help in this discussion by re-analyzing prior neurophysiological data highlighting differences between trust and distrust by connecting these data with two distinct personality dimensions. Thus, the objective was to analyze the connection between neurophysiological trust/distrust processing and distinct HEXACO personality dimensions. Differences were found in the event-related potentials (ERPs) calculated for visual presentations of political institution words and brand names, which were evaluated with respect to trust and distrust by button presses. Two time points (330 ms and 780 ms) showed brain activity differences between trust and distrust related to the two word categories at frontal electrode locations. For this study, these findings were taken and connected to HEXACO-60 personality inventory results collected from prior participants. Statistical analysis revealed a significant interaction between the ERPs and two HEXACO personality dimensions concerning trusted brands at the later time point (780 ms) at the right frontal electrode location F8. This result is taken as neurophysiological evidence that parameter values of the personality traits honesty–humility and agreeableness have an influence on brain functions related to trusted brands. The birth and following growth of social media platforms has influenced a lot. In addition to beneficial features, it has long-been noticed that heavy consumption of social media can have negative effects beyond a simple lack of time for other things. Of particular interest is the idea that consuming short videos lasting only fractions of a minute and watched one after another can lead to deficits in concentration and attention. Completing the existing literature that already reports evidence for attention deficits related to heavy social media use, the present study aims to contribute to this acute topic by adding neurophysiological data to it. In particular, this study made use of a well-known experimental paradigm, which is able to detect attention-related changes on a neurophysiological level. The so-called oddball paradigm was applied and the hypothesis that heavy social media users mainly consuming short videos show a reduced P300 event-related potential (ERP) component was tested, which has been found to reflect attention-related brain functions. For this, we invited twenty-nine participants and designed a visual oddball experiment including a white circle on black background as the low-frequency target stimulus and a white triangle on black background as the high-frequency non-target stimulus. On the basis of their self-reported short-video-based social media usage habits, all participants were grouped into heavy (more than 4 h daily usage) and regular (below 3 h daily usage) users, and finally data from 14 heavy and 15 regular users were further analyzed. It was found that only regular users show a clear P300 ERP component, while this particular brain potential amplitude reflecting attentional processes was significantly reduced in heavy users. During the first year of life, infants start to learn the lexicon of their native language. Word learning includes the establishment of longer-term representations for the phonological form and the meaning of the word in the brain, as well as the link between them. However, it is not known how the brain processes word forms immediately after they have been learned. We familiarized 12-month-old infants (N = 52) with two pseudowords and studied their neural signatures. Specifically, we determined whether a newly learned word form elicits neural signatures similar to those observed when a known word is recognized (i.e., when a well-established word representation is activated, eliciting enhanced mismatch responses) or whether the processing of a newly learned word form shows the suppression of the neural response along with the principles of predictive coding of a learned rule (i.e., the order of the syllables of the new word form). The pattern of results obtained in the current study suggests that recognized word forms elicit a mismatch response of negative polarity, similar to newly learned and previously known words with an established representation in long-term memory. In contrast, prediction errors caused by acoustic novelty or deviation from the expected order in a sequence of (pseudo)words elicit responses of positive polarity. This suggests that electric brain activity is not fully explained by the predictive coding framework.

Brain responses to discrete stimuli are modulated when multiple stimuli are presented in sequence. These alterations are especially pronounced when the time course of an evoked response overlaps with responses to subsequent stimuli, such as in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm used to control a brain–computer interface (BCI). The present study explored whether the measurement or classification of select brain responses during RSVP would improve through application of an established technique for dealing with overlapping stimulus presentations, known as irregular or “jittered” stimulus onset interval (SOI). EEG data were collected from 24 healthy adult participants across multiple rounds of RSVP calibration and copy phrase tasks with varying degrees of SOI jitter. Analyses measured three separate brain signals sensitive to attention: N200, P300, and occipitoparietal alpha attenuation. Presentation jitter visibly reduced intrusion of the SSVEP, but in general, it did not positively or negatively affect attention effects, classification, or system performance. Though it remains unclear whether stimulus overlap is detrimental to BCI performance overall, the present study demonstrates that single-trial classification approaches may be resilient to rhythmic intrusions like SSVEP that appear in the averaged EEG.

Background: The evaluation of evidence, which frequently takes the form of scientific evidence, necessitates the input of experts in relevant fields. The results are presented as expert opinions or expert evaluations, which are generally accepted as a reliable representation of the facts. A further issue that remains unresolved though is the process of evaluating the expertise and knowledge of an expert in the first instance. In general, earned certificates, grades and other objective criteria are typically regarded as representative documentation to substantiate an expert status. However, there is a possibility that these may not always be sufficiently representative. Objectives: The goal of the present study was to provide evidence that the neural processing of law-relevant and law-irrelevant terms varies significantly between participants who have received training in the field of law (experts) and those who have not (novices). Methods: To this end, changes in brain activity were recorded via electroencephalography (EEG) during visual presentations of terms belonging to five different categories (fake right, democracy, filler word, basic right and rule of law). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were subsequently averaged for each category and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The results clearly demonstrate that participants trained in law processed fake rights and filler words in a similar manner. Furthermore, both of these conditions elicited different levels of brain activity compared to all law-relevant terms. This was not the case in participants who had not received legal training. The brains of untrained participants processed all five term categories in a strikingly similar manner. In light of prior knowledge regarding language processing, the primary focus was on two distinct electrode locations: one in the left posterior region, and the other in the left frontal region. In both locations, the most prominent differences in brain activity elicited by the aforementioned term categories in law-trained participants occurred approximately 450 milliseconds after stimulus onset. The results were further corroborated by a repeated-measures ANOVA and subsequent t-tests, which also demonstrated the absence of this effect in law-untrained participants. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide empirical evidence that brain activity measurements, in particular ERPs, can be used to distinguish between experts trained in a specific field of expertise and novices in that field. Such findings have the potential to facilitate objective assessments of expertise, enabling comparisons between experts and novices that extend beyond traditional criteria such as qualifications and experience. Instead, individuals can be evaluated based on their cognitive processes, as observed through brain activity.

A tactile event-related potential (ERP)-based brain–computer interface (BCI) system is an alternative for enhancing the control and communication abilities of quadriplegic patients with visual or auditory impairments. Hence, in this study, we proposed a tactile stimulus pattern using a vibrotactile stimulator for a multicommand BCI system. Additionally, we observed a tactile ERP response to the target from random vibrotactile stimuli placed in the left and right wrist and elbow positions to create commands. An experiment was conducted to explore the location of the proposed vibrotactile stimulus and to verify the multicommand tactile ERP-based BCI system. Using the proposed features and conventional classification methods, we examined the classification efficiency of the four commands created from the selected EEG channels. The results show that the proposed vibrotactile stimulation with 15 stimulus trials produced a prominent ERP response in the Pz channels. The average classification accuracy ranged from 61.9% to 79.8% over 15 stimulus trials, requiring 36 s per command in offline processing. The P300 response in the parietal area yielded the highest average classification accuracy. The proposed method can guide the development of a brain–computer interface system for physically disabled people with visual or auditory impairments to control assistive and rehabilitative devices.

Implicit emotion regulation provides an effective means of controlling emotions triggered by a single face without conscious awareness and effort. Crowd emotion has been proposed to be perceived as more intense than it actually is, but it is still unclear how to regulate it implicitly. In this study, participants viewed sets of faces of varying emotionality (e.g. happy to angry) and estimated the mean emotion of each set after being primed with an expressive suppression goal, a cognitive reappraisal goal, or a neutral goal. Faster discrimination for happy than angry crowds was observed. After induction of the expressive suppression goal instead of the cognitive reappraisal goal, augmented N170 and early posterior negativity (EPN) amplitudes, as well as attenuated late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes, were observed in response to happy crowds compared to the neutral goal. Differential processing of angry crowds was not observed after the induction of both regulatory goals compared to the neutral goal. Our findings thus reveal the happy-superiority effect and that implicit induction of expressive suppression improves happy crowd emotion recognition, promotes selective coding, and successfully downregulates the neural response to happy crowds. From the perspective of the user's psychological load, this study examined the cognitive mechanism by which privacy interpretation information affects the willingness to accept targeted advertising. Our findings provide a reference for enterprises seeking to develop and improve privacy interpretation information and reduce advertising avoidance behaviour. Based on information processing theory and cognitive load theory, this study experimentally collected volunteers' electroencephalography (EEG) data, interpreted the EEG results as representing emotions and cognitive load, and analysed the impact of the normativeness and intelligibility of privacy interpretation information on the willingness to accept targeted advertising. Intelligibility significantly affected this willingness. In the case of acceptable transparency, users were more inclined to avoid targeted advertising under low interpretability. Low interpretability caused them to expend more cognitive effort, which induced a larger N2 amplitude. In the case of unacceptable transparency, the opposite conclusion was drawn. In addition, privacy information with high interpretability was more likely to arouse users' emotions and induce a greater amplitude of late positive potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies of emotion regulation to‐date have mostly focused on negative emotion down‐regulation, leaving positive emotion up‐regulation poorly understood, particularly regarding factors that may modulate its success. While reappraisal and savoring have been shown to be effective at increasing electrocortical and subjective response to pictures in controlled laboratory settings, it remains unclear whether individuals can effectively enact these techniques to willfully increase positive emotions in everyday life when faced with other concurrent distractions/demands. Here, we used the late positive potential (LPP), an electrocortical measure that is larger for emotional compared to neutral stimuli, to assess the effect of working memory (WM) load on individuals' ability to reappraise or savor positive pictures. Seventy‐six participants were randomly assigned to use either reappraisal or savoring to up‐regulate positive emotion to pictures. Following training, participants engaged in a positive emotion up‐regulation task interspersed with high and low WM load trials, while EEG was recorded. Frequentist and Bayesian statistics showed that although high WM load seemed to consume resources and reduced picture processing overall, it did not interfere with the enhancement of the LPP via positive emotion up‐regulation. Nonetheless, WM performance (especially on high‐load trials) was worse when participants were engaged in positive emotion up‐regulation. Therefore, while both techniques appear to be effective under concurrent WM load, positive emotion up‐regulation may interfere with other ongoing tasks. The extent to which an emotion regulation technique can withstand concurrent cognitive load could have implications for its everyday utility. Here, we show that savoring and reappraisal effectively increase the late positive potential, despite high concurrent working memory load. The aim of this study was to describe the spectral features of pre-stimulus event-related potential (ERP) components elicited in visual tasks such as the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), prefrontal negativity (pN) and visual negativity (vN). ERPs are considered time-locked and phase-locked (evoked) activity, but we have also analyzed the non-phase but time-locked (induced) activity in the same interval by applying the temporal spectral evolution (TSE) method. Participants (N = 26) were tested in a passive task, a simple response task (SRT) and a discriminative response task (DRT), where EEG activity was recorded with 64 scalp electrodes. We analyzed the time-frequency modulations (phase and non-phase) prior to the onset of the stimuli in the sub-delta, delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. The results showed that all the pre-stimulus ERP components were mainly regulated by evoked activity in the sub-delta band. On the other hand, induced activity seems to be linked to evoked responses but with a different psychophysiological role. We concluded that other preparatory cognitive mechanisms associated with ERPs can also be detected by the TSE method. This finding may suggest underlying mechanisms in non-phase activity and requires the addition of non-phase activity analysis to the traditional analysis (phase and evoked activity). Color vision deficiency (CVD) is one of the most common disorders related to visual impairment. Individuals with this condition are unable to differentiate between colors due to the absence or impairment of one or more color photoreceptors in their retinas. This disorder can be diagnosed through multiple approaches. This review paper provides a comprehensive summary of studies on applying Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) technology for diagnosing CVD. The main purpose of this review is to help researchers understand how BCI can be further developed and utilized for diagnosing CVD in the future.

Packaging design is pivotal in motivating consumer decisions, as a key communication tool from creation to purchase. Currently, the interpretation and evaluation of packaging’s impact are shifting toward non-traditional methods. This pilot study evaluated the packaging perception of York Ham and Turkey Breast products. The event-related potential (ERP) technique, the methodology priming words (positive and negative), and target images (original and modified packaging) were applied. A total of 23 participants were sampled using a 32-channels scalp elastic electrode cap and viewed 200 trials of word–image matching. Participants responded whether the images and adjectives matched or not, using the two groups of images. The results demonstrate an N400 effect in the parietal area. This region was observed to show evidence of cognitive processing related to congruency or incongruency, by contrasting the priming and target of this study. The evaluation positioned the York Ham packaging as the best rated. The findings show a relevant contribution to ERPs and research related to the food packaging perception.

Thus, the current study employs high vs low peer donation amount (HPDA vs LPDA) information to explore its effect on “how-much-to-donate” decisions and the corresponding neural and psychological reactions at the same time.Participants and Methods: Student samples from a Chinese university and behavioral experiments with the event-related potential (ERP) method were used in this study.Results: The behavioral results are consistent with previous research in which HPDA was positively associated with higher donation levels. ERP results show the mechanisms behind decision-making can be summarized into a cognitive approach represented by cost-benefit analysis and an affective approach represented by reward perception. More surprisingly, in contrast to the behavioral results, LPDA elicits higher level of reward perception than HPDA.Conclusion: The results indicate that although HPDA leads to higher levels of donation, donors do not show higher levels of reward anticipation at the neurological level, indicating the increment of donation may come at the cost of donors. Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) allow communication between the brain and the external world. This type of technology has been extensively studied. However, BCI instruments with high signal quality are typically heavy and large. Thus, recording electroencephalography (EEG) signals is an inconvenient task. In recent years, system-on-chip (SoC) approaches have been integrated into BCI research, and sensors for wireless portable devices have been developed; however, there is still considerable work to be done. As neuroscience research has advanced, EEG signal analyses have come to require more accurate data. Due to the limited bandwidth of Bluetooth wireless transmission technology, EEG measurement systems with more than 16 channels must be used to reduce the sampling rate and prevent data loss. Therefore, the goal of this study was to develop a multichannel, high-resolution (24-bit), high-sampling-rate EEG BCI device that transmits signals via Wi-Fi. We believe that this system can be used in neuroscience research. The EEG acquisition system proposed in this work is based on a Cortex-M4 microcontroller with a Wi-Fi subsystem, providing a multichannel design and improved signal quality. This system is compatible with wet sensors, Ag/AgCl electrodes, and dry sensors. A LabVIEW-based user interface receives EEG data via Wi-Fi transmission and saves the raw data for offline analysis. In previous cognitive experiments, event tags have been communicated using Recommended Standard 232 (RS-232). The developed system was validated through event-related potential (ERP) and steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) experiments. Our experimental results demonstrate that this system is suitable for recording EEG measurements and has potential in practical applications. The advantages of the developed system include its high sampling rate and high amplification. To investigate event-related activity in human brain dynamics as measured with EEG, triggers must be incorporated to indicate the onset of events in the experimental protocol. Such triggers allow for the extraction of ERP, i.e., systematic electrophysiological responses to internal or external stimuli that must be extracted from the ongoing oscillatory activity by averaging several trials containing similar events. Due to the technical setup with separate hardware sending and recording triggers, the recorded data commonly involves latency differences between the transmitted and received triggers. The computation of these latencies is critical for shifting the epochs with respect to the triggers sent. Otherwise, timing differences can lead to a misinterpretation of the resulting ERPs. This study presents a methodical approach for the CLET using a photodiode on a non-immersive VR (i.e., LED screen) and an immersive VR (i.e., HMD). Two sets of algorithms are proposed to analyze the photodiode data. The experiment designed for this study involved the synchronization of EEG, EMG, PPG, photodiode sensors, and ten 3D MoCap cameras with a VR presentation platform (Unity). The average latency computed for LED screen data for a set of white and black stimuli was 121.98 ± 8.71 ms and 121.66 ± 8.80 ms, respectively. In contrast, the average latency computed for HMD data for the white and black stimuli sets was 82.80 ± 7.63 ms and 69.82 ± 5.52 ms. Background: The G2019S-LRRK2 gene mutation is a common cause of hereditary Parkinson's disease (PD), associated with a higher frequency of the postural instability gait difficulty (PIGD) motor phenotype yet with preserved cognition. This study investigated neurophysiological changes during motor and cognitive tasks in PD patients with and without the G2019S-LRRK2 mutation. Methods: 33 iPD patients and 22 LRRK2-PD patients performed the visual Go/NoGo task (VGNG) during sitting (single-task) and walking (dual-task) while wearing a 64-channel EEG cap. Event-related potentials (ERP) from Fz and Pz, specifically N200 and P300, were extracted and analyzed to quantify brain activity patterns. Results: The LRRK2-PD group performed better in the VGNG than the iPD group (group*task; p = 0.05). During Go, the iPD group showed reduced N2 amplitude and prolonged N2 latency during walking, whereas the LRRK2-PD group showed only shorter latency (group*task p = 0.027). During NoGo, opposite patterns emerged; the iPD group showed reduced N2 and increased P3 amplitudes during walking while the LRRK2-PD group demonstrated increased N2 and reduced P3 (N2: group*task, p = 0.010, P3: group*task, p = 0.012). Conclusions: The LRRK2-PD group showed efficient early cognitive processes, reflected by N2, resulting in greater neural synchronization and prominent ERPs. These processes are possibly the underlying mechanisms for the observed better cognitive performance as compared to the iPD group. As such, future applications of intelligent medical sensing should be capable of capturing these electrophysiological patterns in order to enhance motor–cognitive functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cognitive dysfunction has frequently been found in patients with migraine. The so-called contingent negative variation (CNV) and EEG power spectral densities may be the best choices to explore the underlining pathophysiology, such as cortical inhibition and habituation. Methods: Thirty migraine patients without aura and healthy controls matched for sex, age, and education were recruited separately for CNV recording. The amplitudes, latencies, and squares of different CNV components, such as oCNV, iCNV, tCNV, and PINV, were selected and analyzed. Behavioral data, such as manual reaction time (RT), were analyzed. We used the Person correlation coefficient R to analyze different ERP components in relation to clinical characteristics. A multiple regression analysis was conducted for the migraine group. Spectral analysis of EEG data from all channels using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Results: The migraine group had longer A-latency, C-latency, and iCNV-latency than the control group. The migraine group had higher iCNV-amplitude, oCNV-amplitude, and tCNV-amplitude than the control group, especially those located in the occipital area. The iCNV-square, oCNV-square, tCNV-square, or PINV-square in the migraine group was significantly larger than the control group. Different correlations were found between clinical characteristics and ERP components. The delta or theta activity in the migraine group was statistically lower than in the control group. Discussion: Our study has revealed that migraine attacks may influence responsivity, pre-activation, habituation, and cortical inhibition not only on the behavioral level but also on the electrophysiological level. Abnormal changes in cortical habituation and inhibition can be interpreted as CNV components. Additionally, analyses have revealed correlations between CNV components and various factors, including age, the clinical course of the condition, attack frequency, pain intensity, and duration. Background: The perception of basic emotional sounds, such as crying and laughter is associated with effective interpersonal communication. Difficulties with the perception and analysis of sounds that complicate understanding emotions at an early development age may contribute to communication deficits. Methods: This study focused on auditory nonverbal emotional perception including emotional vocalizations with opposite valences (crying and laughter) and neutral sound (phoneme "P?"). We conducted event-related potential analysis and compared peak alpha frequencies (PAFs) for different conditions in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children aged 4 to 6 years old (N = 25 for each group). Results: Children with ASD had a higher amplitude of P100 and lower amplitude of N200 for all types of sounds and higher P270 in response to neutral phoneme. During the perception of emotional sounds, children with ASD demonstrated a single P270 electroencephalography (EEG) component instead of a P200-P300 complex specific to TD children. However, the most significant differences were associated with a response to emotional valences of stimuli. The EEG differences between crying and laughter were expressed as a lower amplitude of N400 and higher PAF for crying compared to laughter and were found only in TD children. Background: As an integral ingredient of human sociality, prosocial behavior requires learning what acts can benefit or harm others. However, it remains unknown how individuals adjust prosocial learning to avoid punishment or to pursue reward. Given that arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a neuropeptide that has been involved in modulating various social behaviors in mammals, it could be a crucial neurochemical facilitator that supports prosocial learning. Methods: In 50 placebo controls and 54 participants with AVP administration, we examined the modulation of AVP on the prosocial learning characterized by reward and punishment framework, as well as its underlying neurocomputational mechanisms combining computational modeling, event-related potentials and oscillations. Results: We found a self-bias that individuals learn to avoid punishment asymmetrically more severely than reward-seeking. Importantly, AVP increased behavioral performances and learning rates when making decisions to avoid losses for others and to obtain gains for self. These behavioral effects were underpinned by larger responses of stimulus-preceding negativity (SPN) to anticipation, as well as higher punishment-related feedback-related negativity (FRN) for prosocial learning and reward-related P300 for proself benefits, while FRN and P300 neural processes were integrated into theta (4–7 Hz) oscillation at the outcome evaluation stage. Conclusions: These results suggest that AVP context-dependently up-regulates altruism for concerning others' losses and reward-seeking for self-oriented benefits. Our findings provide insight into the selectively modulatory roles of AVP in prosocial behaviors depending on learning contexts between proself reward-seeking and prosocial punishment-avoidance. The language comprehension system preferentially assumes that agents come first during incremental processing. While this might reflect a biologically fixed bias, shared with other domains and other species, the evidence is limited to languages that place agents first, and so the bias could also be learned from usage frequency. Here, we probe the bias with electroencephalography (EEG) in Äiwoo, a language that by default places patients first, but where sentence‐initial nouns are still locally ambiguous between patient or agent roles. Comprehenders transiently interpreted nonhuman nouns as patients, eliciting a negativity when disambiguation was toward the less common agent‐initial order. By contrast and against frequencies, human nouns were transiently interpreted as agents, eliciting an N400‐like negativity when the disambiguation was toward patient‐initial order. Consistent with the notion of a fixed property, the agent bias is robust against usage frequency for human referents. Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is currently a suitable gaze-independent paradigm for controlling visual brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) based on event-related potentials (ERPs), especially for users with limited eye movement control. However, unlike gaze-dependent paradigms, gaze-independent ones have received less attention concerning the specific choice of visual stimuli that are used. In gaze-dependent BCIs, images of faces—particularly those tinted red—have been shown to be effective stimuli. This study aims to evaluate whether the colour of faces used as visual stimuli influences ERP-BCI performance under RSVP. Fifteen participants tested four conditions that varied only in the visual stimulus used: grey letters (GL), red famous faces with letters (RFF), green famous faces with letters (GFF), and blue famous faces with letters (BFF). The results indicated significant accuracy differences only between the GL and GFF conditions, unlike prior gaze-dependent studies. Additionally, GL achieved higher comfort ratings compared with other face-related conditions. This study highlights that the choice of stimulus type impacts both performance and user comfort, suggesting implications for future ERP-BCI designs for users requiring gaze-independent systems.
