Abstract

El objetivo principal de este trabajo ha sido realizar un estudio descriptivo en base al análisis de la incidencia de hospitalización por herpes zóster en Navarra durante el periodo de 2010 a 2015. Para ello, se ha analizado información registrada en el Conjunto Mínimo Básico de Datos (CMBD) en la que se incluían datos sobre edad, centros hospitalarios, sexo, duración de la estancia hospitalaria, diagnóstico principal y secundario, complicaciones, tipo de ingreso y motivo de alta. 382 hospitalizaciones fueron identificadas durante este periodo, el 51,6 % de ellas en hombres. La incidencia de hospitalización fue de 9,9 casos por cada 100.000 habitantes, la cual aumentaba considerablemente conforme aumentaba la edad. El herpes zóster afectó fundamentalmente a la población mayor de 60 años. En el 30,1 % de los casos se registró alguna complicación. La estancia media de hospitalización fue 16,8 días y el porcentaje de mortalidad 6,3 %. The main objective of this study was to conduct a descriptive study based on the analysis of the incidence of herpes zoster hospitalization in Navarre during the period from 2010 to 2015. For this purpose, we have analyzed information recorded in the Conjunto Mínimo Básico de Datos (CMBD), which included data on age, hospital centers, sex, duration of hospital stay, main and secondary diagnosis, complications, type of admission and reason for discharge. 382 hospitalizations were identified during this period, 51.6% of them in men. The incidence of hospitalization was 9.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which increased considerably as the age increased. Herpes zoster primarily affected the population older than 60 years. In 30.1% of cases, there was a complication. The mean hospital stay was 16.8 days and the mortality rate was 6.3%. Abstract

The work of Santiago Ramón y Cajal is difficult to understand without knowing the personalities of Justo, his father, and his brother Pedro. His father practically forced the two brothers to study medicine. Thanks to that, Santiago was able to combine his artistic talent with histology and wonderfully describe cerebral architecture. Pedro was a faithful brother and above all a friend of Santiago, and they worked together for years. Pedro was able to demonstrate the theories of his brother in nonmammalian amniotes, concluding that the basic elements of the nervous system are common to these animals and he provided images that served Santiago to formulate the theory of dynamic polarization. Pedro, who decided to remain in the shadow of his brother, was a very complete doctor, pathologist and gynecologist, who made interesting contributions in all these fields and above all was a great humanist who left an important personal and scientific legacy. 14. Cajal's Interactions with Sherrington and the Croonian Lecture.

Abstract

Sherrington was a major proponent of the neuron doctrine and he was inspired by Santiago Ramón y Cajal's theory of dynamic polarization of nerve cells (Ley de la polarización dinámica de la célula nerviosa). Sherrington coined the term "synapse" to name the Cajal description of interneuronal contact and he gave the term, for functional nerve endings, as "Boutons terminaux," still used today. These two giants of neuroscience met only once, but they had a life-long friendship. It was Sherrington who wrote Cajal's Obituary for the Royal Society. We review here some of the scientific exchanges between Cajal and Sherrington, with particular attention to 1894, when the two neuroscientist met in London during Cajal's visit to deliver the Croonian Lecture to the Royal Society. We shall examine not only the scientific exchanges but also their friendship, which was immediate and strong.
