International audience; What are the standards for the reporting methods and results of fMRI studies, and how have they evolved over the years? To answer this question we reviewed 160 papers published between 2004 and 2019. Reporting styles for methods and results of fMRI studies can differ greatly between published studies. However, adequate reporting is essential for the comprehension, replication and reuse of the study (for instance in a meta-analysis). To aid authors in reporting the methods and results of their task-based fMRI study the COBIDAS report was published in 2016, which provides researchers with clear guidelines on how to report the design, acquisition, preprocessing, statistical analysis and results (including data sharing) of fMRI studies (Nichols et al. in Best Practices in Data Analysis and Sharing in Neuroimaging using fMRI, 2016). In the past reviews have been published that evaluate how fMRI methods are reported based on the 2008 guidelines, but they did not focus on how task based fMRI results are reported. This review updates reporting practices of fMRI methods, and adds an extra focus on how fMRI results are reported. We discuss reporting practices about the design stage, specific participant characteristics, scanner characteristics, data processing methods, data analysis methods and reported results.

The digital ‘Burgundian Epigraphic Corpus’ is the result of a collaboration between two teams, the Corpus of Inscriptions of Medieval France (CIFM) and the Corpus of Medieval Burgundian Texts (CBMA), as part of the Cosme2 (Consortium Sources Médiévales—linked to TGIR Huma-Num from CNRS—France), dedicated to digital approaches to historical corpora. This article explains how a complex set of documents mixing Latin, Greek, and Old French texts, accompanied by rich metadata, has been processed in order to allow new surveys by humanists. It shows how the corpus is constantly reinvested and how its exploitation, thanks to digital methods, generates new data and metadata that can be reinjected into the corpus and in turn operated, creating a kind of virtuous circle. Three retro-developments are briefly discussed here: (1) semantic web, connectivity, and named entities; (2) geographic information system (GIS) and automated extraction of new metadata; (3) lemmatization and automatic language detection.

For a long time, the water column at the impact point of a naval gun firing at the sea has mainly depended on manual detection methods for locating, which has problems such as low accuracy, subjectivity and inefficiency. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a water column detection method based on an improved you-only-look-once version 4 (YOLOv4) algorithm. Firstly, the method detects the sea antenna through the Hoffman line detection method to constrain the sensitive area in the current detection image so as to improve the accuracy of water column detection; secondly, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) + K-means clustering algorithm is used to obtain a better prior bounding box, which is input into the YOLOv4 network to improve the positioning accuracy of the water column; finally, the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is added in the PANet structure to improve the detection accuracy of the water column. The experimental results show that the above algorithm can effectively improve the detection accuracy and positioning accuracy of the water column at the impact point.

Biomaterials used in biomedical implants, diagnostic devices, and in-situ sensors, all face the issue of biofouling. Surface modification of biomaterial surfaces with antifouling polymers can prevent non-specific adsorption of proteins and other bio-foulants onto these surfaces. Although there are many antifouling polymers to chose from, getting the polymers onto different materials is challenging as the surface modification process is dependent on the substrate’s surface chemistry. This limits the kinds of materials that are able to be modified, especially in devices made with several materials that must be modified as a single unit. Therefore, the goal of this research is to develop an effective antifouling surface modification that is compatible with different types and classes of biomaterials. A three-step modification approach was taken to form dense antifouling polymer brushes. The surfaces were first activated using oxygen plasma to increase the density of surface hydroxyl groups. Next, a silane coupling agent with an Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) initiator was attached to the activated surfaces. Finally, an antifouling zwitterionic monomer was polymerized on the surface using an aqueous controlled living radical polymerization technique, Surface Initiated - Activators Regenerated by Electron Transfer – Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP). Two zwitterionic antifouling polymers, poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (pCBMA), and poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (pSBMA) were investigated. Clinically- and environmentally-relevant materials were studied and include poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), titanium, silicon, and 3D printed stainless steel. Water contact angle (WCA) analysis showed that surfaces modified with zwitterionic polymers became more hydrophilic. WCA analysis may not be suitable for evaluating non-modified 3D printed surfaces due to their poor surface finish, and this material requires further surface topography characterization. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and ellipsometry showed that the zwitterionic polymer layers did not necessarily have to be thick to produce their hydrophilic effect. AFM also revealed that each step of the surface modification process produced different roughness effects on all of the different surfaces. The zwitterionic layer with the smoother surface tended to better resist bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption. Radiolabelled BSA experiments showed reduced fouling on all 2D samples but to different degrees. The pCBMA modification was not successful in preventing BSA fouling on 3D printed 316L stainless steel. Full or partial BSA fouling may be due to the hydrolytic instability of the silane coupling agent, used to form covalent bonds between the antifouling polymers and the different surfaces, although further investigation is required to validate this hypothesis. Improving the long-term stability of silanes or research with other multi-surface compatible coupling agents that have better long-term stability in aqueous solutions should be pursued. Eating is an essential act of our everyday life, and it involves complicated cognitive appraisal and gustatory evaluation. This study meta-analyzed the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies about food labels on brand, nature and nutrition. Web of Science Core Collection (WoS), Scopus, and PubMed were queried to identify human fMRI studies written in English and published in peer-reviewed journals and used taste or food related labels. Studies were excluded if they reported no results from taste/food related stimuli versus control, no task-based fMRI results, or no results from whole-brain analysis. Nineteen studies entered the analysis. Results for the meta-analysis on food nutrition revealed that the precuneus on the right hemisphere was significantly activated, a brain region related to internal mentation of self-consciousness and nutritional evaluation. Results for the overall analysis on all 19 studies, the analysis on food brand, and the analysis on food nature revealed no significant brain regions. Food nutrition labels were generally processed by brain regions related to internal mentation of self-consciousness and nutritional evaluation. However, the neural correlates of labels of food brand and food nature were inconsistent across studies. Chinese firms participate in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMA) in a constantly increasing rate. As China, the leading developing economy of the world keeps developing, the dynamics of value creation through CBMA change. This study examines the short-term performance of 41 CBMA deals by Chinese firms from 2012 to 2015. Results from the event study analysis show that, on average, Chinese companies should participate in CBMA. The first result of this study indicates that Chinese acquirer companies gain significant cumula-tive average abnormal returns (CAARs) from CBMA. The second result of this study is that Chinese acquirer companies gain bigger CAARs from CBMA when the acquiring firm and the target firm operate in different industries. These findings, along with the existing literature about Chinese CBMA, indi-cate that examination of Chinese CBMA performance requires several factors to be taken into account in order to determine which firms and which industries are in the best position to create value.
